The 4 Best International Travel Insurance Companies

Latest Update November 11, 2015

In addition to their more traditional plans, HTH Travel Insurance offers two special medical-only plans for long-term international travelers. These plans cover any emergency medical treatments you need while you’re traveling abroad since standard health insurance providers don’t normally cover this. If you feel like you need more comprehensive coverage, though, it’s better to opt for one of their trip protection plans, which covers trip cancellation, interruption, and delays as well as baggage protection. The benefits of choosing HTH Travel Insurance don’t end there, however. Their 24/7 worldwide travel services include interpretation assistance and help with emergency cash transfers, among other things. While not crucial to an international travel insurance policy, these services can give you a little extra peace of mind.

The Best Prepaid Travel Cards

What’s the best way to carry money when traveling abroad? There are more options than ever before, and yet it’s hard to find a payment method that offers maximum convenience and security essential features for most travelers.

Most people simply bring their credit cards or debit cards with them. Plastic is more secure than cash, and there’s no need to worry about bringing enough funds.

However, there are drawbacks to using credit cards overseas as well. For example, Americans traveling in countries with the new chip-and-PIN standards for credit cards are increasingly finding that their credit cards are no longer universally accepted .

At the same time, travelers cheques, like those traditionally issued by American Express, are slowly becoming outdated. According to industry experts, not only are travelers checks more cumbersome to deal with, they are also becoming less accepted overseas.

If you prefer leaving your credit cards at home, consider bringing a prepaid travel card instead. Prepaid travel cards can be used anywhere credit or debit cards are accepted, including at ATMs. The money loaded on the card is converted to the local currency with each purchase, using the dominant exchange rate of that day.

Users have the option to reload the card as many times as needed, no matter where they are. In addition, some prepaid travel cards, like the Travelex, feature chip-and-PIN security technology, meaning that the card will be approved in places where American credit cards might not be approved.

Prepaid travel cards do have downsides, including costly fees and, in some cases, poor conversion rates. And if you have extra money at the end of your trip, some cards may require you to pay a fee to get your money back.

“Most prepaid travel cards are not as good a deal as regular credit or debit cards,” says Ed Perkins, a contributing editor at SmarterTravel.com. “However, people still like them because they limit your losses; you can’t lose anything more than what you have on the card.”

It used to be that any prepaid credit card could be used overseas. However, international drug traffickers were quick to catch on to the fact that they were a great way to transport drug money from the U.S. so that loophole has been closed.

These days, when planning a trip abroad, it’s important to specifically get a prepaid travel card, not just a regular prepaid card. Here is a list of the most common prepaid travel cards and their key features.

The Visa TravelMoney card

Pros: Security features are this card’s strong points. If the card is lost or stolen, the Visa TravelMoney card offers emergency card replacement and cash that is generally delivered within one business day. The card also comes with zero liability protection from fraudulent use, as well as reimbursement for lost luggage. It can also be easily reloaded online or over the phone.

Cons: Downsides include high fees and a 7 percent currency conversion rate. In addition, the card is not chip-and-PIN compatible.

Where to get it: The Visa TravelMoney card is available at many chain drugstores and supermarkets, as well as at big box stores. At the time of publication, it was not available online.

Travelex/MasterCard Cash Passport

Pros: The biggest draw of the Travelex/MasterCard card is that it can be loaded with different currencies of your choosing, including U.S. dollars, Euros or English pounds. Another key advantage of the Travelex MasterCard is that this prepaid card is fully equipped with chip-and-PIN technology, so you won’t have to worry about whether the card will be accepted overseas.

The Cash Passport also has several of the same security features as the Visa model, including zero liability and 24-hour security support. In addition, the card enables cardholders to get their dollars back without an exchange penalty.

Cons: The main drawback is the card s poor conversion rates, which are higher than for credit cards and other prepaid travel cards. However, many travelers will find that this is a price worth paying for the added features, particularly the chip-and-PIN compatibility.

Where to get it: The Travelex card is available in local retail stores and online .

Pass from American Express

Pros: It’s kid-friendly. The American Express Pass card is aimed at parents of teenagers or young adults for use both domestically and overseas. For parents sending their youngster out to explore the world, the card has several attractive features.

“Many people use prepaid travel cards for their kids,” says Perkins. “They can put $500 on the card and not have to worry about losing more money. There’s enough to worry about when your kids are traveling as it is, so many appreciate the extra peace of mind.”

Parents have the ability to add money, check the balance, view the transaction history and set up alerts. The card is a great way to make sure your kids has the money he or she needs and keep an eye on what your kid is spending money on.

Like other American Express cards, Pass comes with purchase protection and GlobalAssist, which will direct cardholders to English-speaking medical and legal professionals, as well as to people who can help with lost passports.

Cons: Like the Visa TravelMoney card, the Pass card does not feature chip-and-PIN technology a definite drawback. According to an American Express spokesperson, American Express currently has no plans to add chip-and-PIN features to the card.

Where to get it: The Pass prepaid travel card can be ordered online at the American Express website.

The Best Day of the Week to Book Airline Flights

Travel experts bring the art of booking cheap airline tickets directly into your home. (Photo: BananaStock/BananaStock/Getty Images )

Although airlines are crafty with their fluctuating ticket prices, travel websites are working to sort out the airline algorithms and help consumers learn to book at the best times to score a good fare. Travel experts Jessica Labrencis, Peter Greenberg and Rick Seaney all agree: Booking airline tickets early in the week yields the best fares and allows you to spend more of your hard-earned travel dollars where they belong — at your destination.

Early in the Week

Most airlines lower prices or instigate sales on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a study by FareCompare.com and information from Travelocity and Expedia. Therefore, booking early in the week usually yields better ticket prices than travel bookings made over the weekend. Although travel experts disagree on precisely the moment to book your seats, this early-in-the-week mantra is consistent across the board. Keep track of fare sales with email updates from travel or airline websites and book immediately when you see the sales.

Evidence for Wednesday

Greenberg narrows the search even further. He claims that Wednesday is, overall, the best day to buy a ticket. Greenberg says it plays out this way: Airlines usually instigate price jumps on Friday and wait to see if other airlines will match the higher fare over the weekend. If not, the fares will drop again on Monday, and other airlines might try to start a “fare war” to keep lowering prices on Tuesday. By Wednesday, competing airlines will have had a chance to match the price drop. But sales are often pulled by Thursday to make room for weekend price-gouging. Greenberg’s analysis of this cycle brings him to the conclusion that Wednesdays are always the best day to buy.

Evidence for Tuesday night

Expedia’s vice president, John Morrey, does not disagree with Greenberg’s findings, but he also says he does not think consumers need to wait until Wednesday to book. He reasons that because airlines match their competitors’ rates by Tuesday evening, the largest stock of cheap tickets are available late on Tuesday night. Thus, he says the late hours of Tuesday are the best time to book.

Tax Topics – Topic 511 Business Travel Expenses #flight #tickets #booking

#business travel

Topic 511 – Business Travel Expenses

Travel expenses are the ordinary and necessary expenses of traveling away from home for your business, profession or job. Generally, employees deduct these expenses by using Form 2106 (PDF), Employee Business Expenses . or Form 2106-EZ (PDF), Unreimbursed Employee Business Expenses . and Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions . You cannot deduct expenses that are lavish or extravagant or that are for personal purposes.

You are traveling away from home if your duties require you to be away from the general area of your tax home for a period substantially longer than an ordinary day’s work, and you need to get sleep or rest to meet the demands of your work while away.

Generally, your tax home is the entire city or general area where your main place of business or work is located, regardless of where you maintain your family home. For example, you live with your family in Chicago but work in Milwaukee where you stay in a hotel and eat in restaurants. You return to Chicago every weekend. You may not deduct any of your travel, meals or lodging in Milwaukee because that is your tax home. Your travel on weekends to your family home in Chicago is not for your work, so these expenses are also not deductible. If you regularly work in more than one place, your tax home is the general area where your main place of business or work is located.

In determining your main place of business, take into account the length of time you normally need to spend at each location for business purposes, the degree of business activity in each area, and the relative significance of the financial return from each area. However, the most important consideration is the length of time you spend at each location.

You can deduct travel expenses paid or incurred in connection with a temporary work assignment away from home. However, you cannot deduct travel expenses paid in connection with an indefinite work assignment. Any work assignment in excess of one year is considered indefinite. Also, you may not deduct travel expenses at a work location if you realistically expect that you will work there for more than one year, whether or not you actually work there that long. If you realistically expect to work at a temporary location for one year or less, and the expectation changes so that at some point you realistically expect to work there for more than one year, travel expenses become nondeductible when your expectation changes.

You may deduct travel expenses, including meals and lodging you incurred in looking for a new job in your present trade or business. You may not deduct these expenses if you had them while looking for work in a new trade or business or while looking for work for the first time. If you are unemployed and there is a substantial break between the time of your past work and your looking for new work, you may not deduct these expenses, even if the new work is in the same trade or business as your previous work. Refer to Publication 529. Miscellaneous Deductions .

Travel expenses for conventions are deductible if you can show that your attendance benefits your trade or business. Special rules apply to conventions held outside the North American area.

Deductible travel expenses while away from home include, but are not limited to the costs of:

  1. Travel by airplane, train, bus or car between your home and your business destination. (If you are provided with a ticket or you are riding free as a result of a frequent traveler or similar program, your cost is zero.)
  2. Using your car while at your business destination. You can deduct actual expenses or the standard mileage rate, as well as business-related tolls and parking fees. If you rent a car, you can deduct only the business-use portion for the expenses.
  3. Fares for taxis or other types of transportation between the airport or train station and your hotel, the hotel and the work location, and from one customer to another, or from one place of business to another.
  4. Meals and lodging.
  5. Tips you pay for services related to any of these expenses.
  6. Dry cleaning and laundry.
  7. Business calls while on your business trip (This includes business communications by fax machine or other communication devices).
  8. Other similar ordinary and necessary expenses related to your business travel (These expenses might include transportation to and from a business meal, public stenographer’s fees, computer rental fees, and operating and maintaining a house trailer).
  9. Shipping of baggage, and sample or display material between your regular and temporary work locations.

Instead of keeping records of your meal expenses and deducting the actual cost, you can generally use a standard meal allowance, which varies depending on where you travel. The deduction for business meals is generally limited to 50% of the unreimbursed cost.

If you are an employee, your allowable travel expenses are figured on Form 2106 or Form 2106-EZ. Your allowable unreimbursed expenses are carried from Form 2106 or Form 2106-EZ to Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), and are subject to a limit based on 2% of adjusted gross income. Refer to Topic 508 for information on the 2% limit. If you do not itemize your deductions, you cannot deduct these expenses. If you are self-employed, you can deduct travel expenses on Form 1040, Schedule C (PDF), Profit or Loss From Business . or Form 1040, Schedule C-EZ (PDF), Net Profit From Business . or if you are a farmer, on Form 1040, Schedule F (PDF), Profit or Loss From Farming .

If you are a member of the National Guard or military reserve, you may be able to claim a deduction for unreimbursed travel expenses paid in connection with the performance of services as a reservist that reduces your adjusted gross income rather than an itemized deduction on Form 1040, Schedule A This travel must be overnight and more than 100 miles from your home. Expenses must be ordinary and necessary. This deduction is limited to the regular federal per diem rate (for lodging, meals and incidental expenses) and the standard mileage rate (for car expenses) plus any parking fees, ferry fees and tolls. Claim these expenses on Form 2106 or Form 2106-EZ and carry them to the appropriate line on Form 1040. Expenses in excess of the limit can be claimed only as an itemized deduction on Form 1040, Schedule A.

Good records are essential. Refer to Topic 305 for information on recordkeeping. For more information on these and other travel expenses, refer to Publication 463. Travel, Entertainment, Gift, and Car Expenses .

The 7 cheapest ways to travel – Travel – Travel Tips

#cheapest way to travel
#

This tough economy doesn t mean you have to shelve your wanderlust

Although a trip may seem like an extra expense that should be shelved in today’s economic climate, most devoted travelers are not inclined to relinquish their cherished pastime. Instead, those of us who aren’t ready to hang up our packable travel hat are desperately seeking less expensive ways to get away.

Don’t miss these Travel stories

With teams using more than 100 unique apparatuses to launch globular projectiles a half-mile or more, the 27th annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin event is our pick as November’s Weird Festival of the Month.

If you want to stick to your budget and satisfy your wanderlust, try rethinking your travel style. Just because one type of trip is less expensive than what you’re used to, it doesn’t mean you’re getting a sub-par experience — you’re just getting a different experience. Go out on a limb and try some cheaper ways to take a trip, like cruising, couch surfing or taking a day trip. You’ll save money by choosing a less expensive vacation, and the best part is you may even discover a new favorite way to travel.

Go couch surfing

No, this is not an activity that mixes water sports with furniture. Couch surfing is an unconventional way to find cheap or even free accommodations in a destination by arranging to sleep on a local’s couch (or sometimes in a spare bedroom, but we think “spare bedroom surfing” sounds less catchy).

One of the most popular couch surfing networks is CouchSurfing.com, where citizens of the world meet and arrange couch stays with other travelers. Sleeping in the home of a stranger naturally raises issues of safety, but a good host will provide plenty of references. In addition, CouchSurfing.com has developed a number of safeguards for its users. For example, the site has a verification process for hosts; in order for a host to confirm that he or she is an actual resident of his or her community, the host must enter a special code online after receiving the code on a postcard in the mail.

While couch surfing is generally a safe way to travel, nothing is foolproof. A sense of adventure is a prerequisite for any successful couch surfing experience. If you don’t feel comfortable sleeping in the home of a stranger, don’t do it!

Travel in the low season

With spring approaching, travel providers are serving up a variety of shoulder-season deals for popular destinations like Europe and Alaska. While shoulder-season deals offer great prices to destinations just as the weather turns favorable, those brave enough to take the less-traveled path of low-season trips can expect to put up with less desirable weather for deliciously low prices. In many destinations (like Ireland and Greece), some attractions, restaurants and even hotels close during the low tourist season — but that doesn’t mean that you can’t plan a great low-season vacation.

Plan ahead to make the most of your low-season getaway. Buy a good guidebook and call each place you want to visit ahead of time to make sure that it will be open. Dress appropriately, especially if you will be dealing with frigid temperatures. And focus on the positive!

Sydney Accommodation

Get down to business

As an alpha world city and Australia s commercial hub, there s no shortage of places to do business in Sydney. Most of the city s business hotels are clustered around main thoroughfare George Street in the heart of the Central Business District, though there are plenty of high-quality hotels on the fringe of the city centre in Darling Harbour and Circular Quay as well.

Countless taxis are on hand to convey passengers to all corners of the city, however it can be just as efficient to hop on a City Circle train or ferry to get around town. All the major hotel chains are represented in the heart of the city including Sofitel, Sheraton and Sebel making Sydney an ideal destination for business travellers.

Fly-in, fly-out

Sydney s busy Kingsford Smith Airport is located in Mascot, around nine kilometres from the city centre. Many of the city s major airport hotels lie just off Airport Drive, including hotels from the Holiday Inn and Hotel Ibis chains. Other nearby airport hotels include a well-appointed Mercure Hotel and the Airport Sydney International Inn Hotel.

It takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the city centre on Sydney s Airport Link train and given Sydney s unpredictable inner-city traffic, it s perhaps the most reliable means of travelling to and from the city particularly on short stopover stays.

Experience the entertainment capital

Sydney might be renowned for the quality of its beaches, however there are plenty of other entertainment options on offer once the sun sets on the city’s scenic coastline. The Star Sydney Casino and Hotel enjoys a prominent Pyrmont location, making it a mainstay of Sydney accommodation and one of the city’s most popular entertainment venues.

Fox Studios Australia is located just a short distance from the city centre in Moore Park, and its Entertainment Quarter welcomes hundreds of visitors each day. Boasting the historic Hordern Pavilion and smaller Hi-Fi bar as popular music venues, the ‘EQ’ enjoys the added convenience of being located next to the bustling Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium precinct.

Giving the gift of flight with airline gift cards

Terms and conditions vary, so do your homework first

By Allie Johnson

Airline gift cards can be an easy way to give the gift of travel in a neat little package. Anyone considering giving one of these cards as a gift, though, should check the terms and conditions ahead of time, be careful when choosing the airline and make sure the recipient will use it (see Airline gift card comparison chart ).

You have to make sure the card you get is convenient for the recipient, says travel expert Marybeth Bond, who offers travel tips on her website. But the nice thing is that a gift card offers flexibility — you can use it to buy a ticket to anywhere.

Though retail gift cards have been around for well over a decade, airline gift cards took a bit longer to catch on. Many domestic airlines have now done away with gift certificates and offer only plastic or virtual gift cards. In most cases, buyers of airline gift cards don’t have to worry about the major snags associated with some retail gift cards: Most airline cards do not expire or diminish in value if the card goes unused, even for years.

There are still catches and restrictions to watch out for, though, and even questions about whether a gift card still will be good if an airline goes bankrupt or merges. So, here’s a guide to the ins and outs of using airline gift cards.

The best way to buy

Walk into a major discount store, grocery store or warehouse club, and you might see airline gift cards hanging near the checkout. However, it’s best to resist the urge to make an impulse purchase, experts say. The best place to buy them is on the airline’s website, says gift card expert Kwame Kuadey, CEO of the gift-card swapping site GiftCardRescue.com. If you buy them in a store, they only come in very small denominations, and $50 or $100 is really just a down payment on a ticket.

Purchasing multiple cards would be an option — though maybe an awkward one, since the recipient would have to keep track of all that plastic — but most airlines put restrictions on the number of cards that can be used for the purchase of a single ticket. One question to ask the airline is whether you can redeem multiple cards when booking a single ticket, Kuadey says.

Buying the card on an airline’s website also offers added security. Websites that specialize in selling gift cards hawk airline gift cards at a discount — so do individuals on Craigslist and eBay — but just about all airlines’ terms and conditions warn that cards purchased anywhere but through the airline or an authorized retailer might not be valid.

4 things to consider when buying an airline gift card or gift certificate

Before airline gift cards became available, gift certificates provided a way to buy air travel for someone else. Some airlines still don’t offer gift cards, but do offer paper or electronic gift certificates. Here are some things to consider when trying to decide between a gift card and a gift certificate:

  1. As with gift cards, the maximum dollar amount of a gift certificate varies from airline to airline.
  2. Most gift certificates, like most cards, are transferable to another person. However, if there’s any chance the recipient might not use the certificate, it’s a good idea to double check.
  3. As with gift cards, places where gift certificates can be redeemed vary. Gift cards typically cannot be redeemed through a travel agent, but some gift certificates can.
  4. It is becoming more common for airlines to not offer a paper gift certificate option and instead send the certificate by email, so there’s no physical gift for the recipient to open.

After purchasing a gift card on an airline’s website, the buyer typically has several shipping options for the card — usually standard, two-day or overnight shipping for a charge of between $3 and $15. Or, some airlines offer the free option of giving a virtual card — an email sent to the recipient with a card number and PIN number.

Watch out for pitfalls

Travel experts say the biggest mistake the giver of an airline gift card can make is choosing the wrong airline. To avoid that, pick an airline the recipient flies frequently or one that has a nearby hub or offers a large number of flights in and out of the major airport closest to the recipient’s home, Bond recommends. If you have a specific trip in mind, check the routes ahead of time, Bond says.

BestFares.com CEO Tom Parsons, a budget travel expert who has been in the travel business for about 30 years, says being locked into one airline can still cause problems. For one, another airline might be offering a bargain flight to the cardholder’s chosen destination. Also, the airline might charge extra fees that the gift card recipient will have to pay out of pocket. There might be a baggage fee, a kid-flies-solo fee, change fees, a charge for a blanket and $3 for a soda pop, Parsons says. So, checking the airline’s baggage and other fees before your purchase is a good idea.

Consumer advocates say another risk of airline gift cards is that some airlines state in their terms and conditions that they will not freeze funds on and replace a lost or stolen card. Beware. If your card is lost or stolen, you could either be in for a big hassle — or out of luck, says Jack Gillis, director of public affairs with the Consumer Federation of America. Gift card expert Kuadey agrees: These are high-value gifts, so you want to make sure the card is replaceable.

If you’re giving an airline gift card — especially to someone who might not use it right away — a possible future airline bankruptcy also could be an issue. If an airline goes bankrupt, it’s hard to predict whether it will be easy for you to get your money, Gillis says. So, before you buy, think about, ‘How solvent is that airline?’

In tough economic times, an airline gift card can provide the luxury of travel for someone who might not otherwise be able to afford it. But an airline gift card isn’t for everyone. For example, it might not be right to give to someone who is on too tight a budget to pay for a hotel or restaurant meals. You might have a $300 gift card, but if you don’t have the other money for a trip, the card might just sit around, Kuadey says.

Instead, experts recommend giving an airline gift card to someone who is travel-savvy or who is planning a specific trip but hasn’t yet purchased tickets. It can also work for a friend or relative who has always wanted to go to a particular place but needs a nudge to actually take the big step and plan something. It wouldn’t be as good a gift for people who don’t have the habit of traveling, Bond says.

Giving an airline gift card did work well for writer and designer Tamela Terry, who chipped in with her sister on a $200 American Airlines card for their mother’s birthday. Terry’s mother used the gift to fly from Texas to Maryland for a family party. It was easy peasy — completely painless, Terry says. There was a downside, though. Terry and her sister chose to have the card number and PIN sent via email to avoid a shipping fee, so the presentation was not impressive. Terry says: It was pretty underwhelming.

Even opening a plastic gift card can seem impersonal, but experts say you can get around that with creative presentation. Gift expert Leah Ingram, author of Gifts Anytime: How to Find the Perfect Present for Any Occasion, who offers tips on her website GiftsandEtiquette.com, suggests perusing online auction sites for an unusual flight-related item, such as a vintage airline bag, and adding little extras that could come in handy on a trip — chewing gum, hand sanitizer, a map, travel-sized toiletries — along with the gift card.

Get anything you can think of that screams airport or airplane and put it in a kitschy bag or even buy a cute new carry-on bag, Ingram says. You can really make it fun.

Sydney Travel Guide

Credit.

Courtesy of Marriott International

Sydney perennially occupies the upper ranks of T+L readers’ favorite cities. And why not? Impressively cosmopolitan, almost embarrassingly handsome—but as breezy and casual as any sunsoaked harbor town—Australia’s largest city could win any visitor over on looks and climate alone. But you’ll also find a surfeit of cultural riches, from first-rate museums to colorful ethnic enclaves (and, of course, that famous opera house). Add innovative restaurants, verdant parks, and glittering beaches, and Sydney feels worlds away from the hardscrabble British penal colony of two centuries ago.

On one of the world’s prettiest harbors, Sydney—Australia’s largest city and the capital of New South Wales—is laid-back and cosmopolitan. It’s best known for the striking Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, but also for its access to nature at Bondi Beach and more. Read on for our Sydney travel guide.

Things Not to Miss in Sydney

You can’t visit Sydney without exploring the Sydney Opera House. Watch one of the world-class operas or book an hour-long guided tour to learn more about its architectural history. If you’re willing to rise early, you can take a two-hour tour backstage tour. Other stops on your Sydney travel itinerary include:

• The Parramatta

• Royal Botanical Gardens

• Museum of Contemporary Art

• Coogee Beach

When to Visit Sydney

Summer lasts from December to February, and winter from June to August. The most rainfall is in the summer. Winter can become chilly, but is usually cool and very dry. Autumn, which lasts from March until May, is probably the time where the weather is at its most comfortable. The spring (September to November) is the best time to travel to Sydney because it offers the warmth of summer, but not as much rainfall, and the sun shines brightly for most of the day.

DON’T MISS

Cocktails at the Icebergs Club, overlooking the surf and sun-baked crowds of Bondi Beach .

A beer (or three, or four) in one of the city’s salty, lively old pubs—especially around the waterfront Rocks district.

Tasmania

Tasmania is Australia ‘s only island state. It has the smallest land area of any state and the smallest population, with roughly 500,000 inhabitants. It is separated from the Australian mainland by a body of water called the Bass Strait that has isolated it for thousands of years.

Understand Edit

Geography Edit

Tasmania is the smallest of Australia’s six states, with an area of 68,401km² (26,410 square miles). It is comparable in size to Ireland or the US state of West Virginia. Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait, from New Zealand by the Tasman Sea, and otherwise surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is located right in the pathway of the notorious “Roaring Forties” winds that encircle the globe.

Most of Tasmania’s population is concentrated around the south east and north coasts. The Midlands (the area between Hobart and Launcestion) is primarily used for agriculture. The Huon Valley and the area between Launceston and Burnie is used for both agriculture and horticulture. The Central Highlands, the West Coast and the South West are all mountainous forested areas, a majority of which are protected inside national parks.

Tasmania is the most mountainous state of Australia, its tallest mountain is Mount Ossa at 1,617m (5,305 ft). Much of Tasmania is still densely forested, with the Southwest National Park and neighbouring areas holding some of the last temperate rain forests in the Southern Hemisphere.

Climate Edit

Tasmania has a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons.

  • Summer December – February. Average maximum temperature is 21°C, average low 12°C.
  • Autumn March – May. Very changeable weather.
  • Winter June – August. Average maximum temperature is 12°C, average low 5°C. Most high lying areas receiving considerable snowfall.
  • Spring September – November. Snowfall is common through to October.

The West Coast and the South West recieve a significantly higher amount of rainfall than anywhere else in the state. The number of rainy days per year in Tasmania is much greater than anywhere else in Australian. The saying “four seasons in a day” is very true here.

Daylight

  • Summer: approximately 15 hours of daylight. (05:30-20:50)
  • Winter: approximately 9 hours of daylight. (07:40-16:40)

History Edit

The first reported sighting of Tasmania by a European was on 24 November 1642 by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. Captain James Cook landed at Adventure Bay in 1777. Matthew Flinders and George Bass first proved Tasmania to be an island in 1798–99.

The first European settling of Tasmania was by the British at Risdon Cove on the eastern bank of the Derwent estuary in 1804. Penal settlements were established at Sullivans Cove (Hobart), Maria Island, Sarah Island, and Port Arthur. The colony changed its name from “Van Diemen’s Land” to “Tasmania” in 1856. The Colony of Tasmania existed from 1856 until 1901, when it federated together with the five other Australian colonies to form the Commonwealth of Australia.

Economy Edit

Tasmania’s main industries are mining (including copper, zinc, tin, and iron), forestry, agriculture, fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, dairy, seafood, beer and wine), and tourism.

Holidays Edit

National Public Holidays

  • 1 January: New Years’ Day
  • 26 January: Australia Day, marking the anniversary of the First Fleet’s landing in Sydney Cove in 1788.
  • Easter weekend (“Good Friday”, “Easter Saturday”, “Easter Sunday” and “Easter Monday”): a four day long weekend in March or April set according to the Western Christian dates.
  • 25 April: ANZAC Day (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps), honouring military veterans
  • Second Monday in June: Queen’s birthday holiday.
  • 25 December: Christmas Day
  • 26 December: Boxing Day

Regional Public Holidays

  • Wednesday not earlier than fifth and not later than eleventh day of January: Devonport Cup
  • Last Wednesday of February: Launceston Cup
  • Second Monday of February: Royal Regatta Day (Southern Tasmania only)
  • First Tuesday of March: King Island Show
  • Second Monday of March: 8 Hour Day (Labour Day elsewhere in Australia)
  • The Friday nearest the last day of November: AGFEST (Circular Head only)
  • The Friday before the first Saturday of October: Burnie Show
  • Thursday before the second Saturday of October: Royal Launceston Show
  • The Friday before the third Saturday of October: Flinders Island Show
  • The Friday before the third Saturday of October: Royal Hobart Show
  • First Monday of November: Recreation Day (Northern Tasmania only)
  • The Friday nearest the last day of November: Devonport Show

When a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday (and Tuesday if necessary) are usually declared holidays in lieu, although both the celebrations and the retail closures will occur on the day itself. Most tourist attractions are closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. Supermarkets and other stores may open for limited hours on some public holidays and on holidays in lieu, but are almost always closed on Christmas Day (25 Dec), Good Friday, Easter Sunday and ANZAC Day morning.

Time Zone Edit

Tasmania is 10 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and 18 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (PST). Daylight Saving is observed from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April the following year.

AEST – Australian Eastern Standard Time UTC+10

AEDT – Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time UTC+11

Tasmanian Devil Edit

Since 1996 devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) has drastically reduced the devil population and now threatens the survival of the species, which in 2008 was declared to be endangered. The disease is a transmissible cancer, which means that it is contagious and passed from one animal to another. Individual devils die within months of infection. Programs are currently being undertaken by the Tasmanian Government to reduce the impact of the disease, including an initiative to build up a colonies of healthy devils in captivity, isolated from the disease. As of 2008 there is an estimated 10,000–15,000 remaining in the wild.

Swift s Satire in Gulliver s Travels #travel #direct

Jonathan Swift

Critical Essays Swift’s Satire in Gulliver’s Travels

Gulliver’s Travels was unique in its day; it was not written to woo or entertain. It was an indictment, and it was most popular among those who were indicted that is, politicians, scientists, philosophers, and Englishmen in general. Swift was roasting people, and they were eager for the banquet.

Swift himself admitted to wanting to “vex” the world with his satire, and it is certainly in his tone, more than anything else, that one most feels his intentions. Besides the coarse language and bawdy scenes, probably the most important element that Dr. Bowdler deleted from the original Gulliver’s Travels was this satiric tone. The tone of the original varies from mild wit to outright derision, but always present is a certain strata of ridicule. Dr. Bowdler gelded it of its satire and transformed it into a children’s book.

After that literary operation, the original version was largely lost to the common reader. The Travels that proper Victorians bought for the family library was Bowdler’s version, not Swift’s. What irony that Bowdler would have laundered the Travels in order to get a version that he believed to be best for public consumption because, originally, the book was bought so avidly by the public that booksellers were raising the price of the volume, sure of making a few extra shillings on this bestseller. And not only did the educated buy and read the book so also did the largely uneducated.

However, lest one think that Swift’s satire is merely the weapon of exaggeration, it is important to note that exaggeration is only one facet of his satiric method. Swift uses mock seriousness and understatement; he parodies and burlesques; he presents a virtue and then turns it into a vice. He takes pot-shots at all sorts of sacred cows. Besides science, Swift debunks the whole sentimental attitude surrounding children. At birth, for instance, Lilliputian children were “wisely” taken from their parents and given to the State to rear. In an earlier satire (A Modest Proposal ), he had proposed that the very poor in Ireland sell their children to the English as gourmet food.

Swift is also a name-caller. Mankind, as he has a Brobdingnagian remark, is “the most pernicious race of little odious vermin that Nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth.” Swift also inserted subtly hidden puns into some of his name-calling techniques. The island of Laputa, the island of pseudo-science, is literally (in Spanish) the land of “the whore.” Science, which learned people of his generation were venerating as a goddess, Swift labeled a whore, and devoted a whole hook to illustrating the ridiculous behavior of her converts.

In addition, Swift mocks blind devotion. Gulliver, leaving the Houyhnhnms, says that he “took a second leave of my master, but as I was going to prostrate myself to kiss his hoof, he did me the honor to raise it gently to my mouth.” Swift was indeed so thorough a satirist that many of his early readers misread the section on the Houyhnhnms. They were so enamored of reason that they did not realize that Swift was metamorphosing a virtue into a vice. In Book IV, Gulliver has come to idealize the horses. They embody pure reason, but they are not human. Literally, of course, we know they are not, but figuratively they seem an ideal for humans until Swift exposes them as dull, unfeeling creatures, thoroughly unhuman. They take no pleasure in sex, nor do they ever overflow with either joy or melancholy. They are bloodless.

Gulliver’s Travels was the work of a writer who had been using satire as his medium for over a quarter of a century. His life was one of continual disappointment, and satire was his complaint and his defense against his enemies and against humankind. People, he believed, were generally ridiculous and petty, greedy and proud; they were blind to the “ideal of the mean.” This ideal of the mean was present in one of Swift’s first major satires, The Battle of the Books (1697). There, Swift took the side of the Ancients, but he showed their views to be ultimately as distorted as those of their adversaries, the Moderns. In Gulliver’s last adventure, Swift again pointed to the ideal of the mean by positioning Gulliver between symbols of sterile reason and symbols of gross sensuality. To Swift, Man is a mixture of sense and nonsense; he had accomplished much but had fallen far short of what he could have been and what he could have done.

Swift was certainly not one of the optimists typical of his century. He did not believe that the Age of Science was the triumph that a great majority of his countrymen believed it to be. Science and reason needed limits, and they needed a good measure of humanism. They did not require absolute devotion.

Swift was a highly moral man and was shocked by his contemporaries’ easy conversion to reason as the be-all and end-all of philosophy. To be so gullible amounted to non-reason in Swift’s thinking. He therefore offered up the impractical scientists of Laputa and the impersonal, but absolutely reasonable, Houyhnhnms as embodiments of science and reason carried to ridiculous limits. Swift, in fact, created the whole of Gulliver’s Travels in order to give the public a new moral lens. Through this lens, Swift hoped to “vex” his readers by offering them new insights into the game of politics and into the social follies of humans.

Contents

Switzerland (German: Schweiz. French: Suisse. Italian: Svizzera. Romansch: Svizra. Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica ) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It has borders with France to the west, Italy to the south, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east and Germany to the north.

The climate is temperate, but varies with altitude. Switzerland has cold, cloudy, rainy/snowy winters and cool to warm, cloudy, humid summers with occasional showers.

Switzerland is known for its mountains (Alps in south, Jura in northwest) but it also has a central plateau of rolling hills, plains, and large lakes. The highest point is Dufourspitze at 4,634m while Lake Maggiore is only 195m above sea level.

Understand [ edit ]

Switzerland’s independence and neutrality have long been honoured by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland’s role in many UN and international organizations has strengthened Switzerland’s ties with its neighbours. However, the country did not officially become a UN member until 2002. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality.

Switzerland showcases three of Europe’s most distinct cultures. To the northeast is the clean and correct, 8-to-5-working, stiffer Swiss-German-speaking Switzerland; to the southwest you find the wine drinking and laissez-faire style known from the French; in the southeast, south of the Alps, the sun warms cappuccino-sippers loitering in Italian-style piazzas; and in the centre: classic Swiss alphorns and mountain landscapes. Binding it all together is a distinct Swiss mentality.

Switzerland can be a glorious whirlwind trip whether you’ve packed your hiking boots, snowboard, or just a good book and a pair of sunglasses.

Economy [ edit ]

Switzerland is a peaceful, prosperous, and stable modern market economy with low unemployment, a highly skilled labour force, and a per capita GDP larger than that of the big Western European economies. The Swiss in recent years have brought their economic practices largely into conformity with the EU’s to enhance their international competitiveness. Switzerland remains a safe haven for investors, because it has maintained a degree of bank secrecy and has kept up the franc’s long-term external value. Reflecting the anaemic economic conditions of Europe, GDP growth dropped in 2001 to about 0.8%, to 0.2% in 2002, and to -0.3% in 2003, with a small rise to 1.8% in 2004-05. Even so, unemployment has remained at less than half the EU average.

Regions [ edit ]

Politically, Switzerland is divided into cantons. but the traveller may find the following regions more useful:

Sweet reaches the end of the road

Sweet Feb 3

Thank you all for your patience and support through this difficult process.

I write this with a heavy heart. Due to poor sales and our inability to raise enough capital to continue operations, Sweet has no choice but to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. All operations cease immediately.

A bankruptcy trustee will be assigned to the case and will administer the liquidation of Sweet and any and all refunds to customers. You will receive a notice in the mail regarding your rights and will be able to contact the trustee directly, if you have any questions.

As most of you know, Sweet was much more than a business to us and you much more than customers. It has been a painful road to get to this point. Sadly, I ve exhausted all possible avenues to continue with Sweet.

This is a profound loss for all of us and the community. It is my hope that you will continue to use our Facebook group to connect and support one another. Nothing can take away the love, friendship and kindness you ve spread throughout the world by rescuing animals, helping women and children, cleaning up beaches, planting trees and gardens and so much more.

Thank you for sharing your lives with us. It s been an absolute honor to serve you.

Switzerland Train Travel: Learn About Trains in Switzerland – Rail Europe

#swiss travel

Switzerland

Scenic train routes criss-cross Europe’s touristic pacesetter

When thinking green, think Switzerland. It s arguably one of the world s most environmentally-conscious countries, and that no doubt explains why train travel there is so eco-friendly. Most trains use ultra-clean hydroelectricity, and some even generate energy-saving electricity when traveling downhill. Every Swiss town is connected to the train system. And, the system also coordinates with an extensive bus network so you can easily journey to the most out-of-the-way finds. Trains can take you from Zurich airport to the top of the Jungfraujoch and its stunning views to the German Black Forest and the French Vosges.

The most popular Swiss routes include, of course, the famous scenic trains: the GoldenPass. the Wilhelm Tell Express, the Bernina Express or Glacier Express smoothly snake in Swiss alpine fields, cross mountain streams on spectacular bridges, all while train travelers enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the snowy Swiss Alps. Choose a Grand Train Tour of Switzerland or Grand Train Tour of Switzerland Hotel Package to make the most of your Swiss journey.

These high-altitude rides are must-views, but one of our favorites is the 30-plus mile Centovalli Express, linking Domodossola, Italy to the Swiss Ticino region. The arrival in Locarno and Lago Maggiore, from the mountain, tops off this fascinating, sensory experience, which includes the clanging of cow bells, the faint smell of wood, and the soothing sounds of mountain streams.

Swiss Travel Passes are most definitely the way to go, unless you just want a quick Swiss Transfer Ticket from the airport to another city to hit the slopes, naturally. Passes not only provide access to the SBB railway mainline network, but also dozens of local, private companies that operate mountain trains, cable cars, and buses. An added bonus: free entrance to most Swiss museums.

For more information on Switzerland contact the Switzerland Tourist Board .

Be sure to see Chapel Bridge, the oldest wooden bridge in Switzerland.

Visit the Catholic and Protestant church of Interlaken.

When getting ready to take a vacation I always check out all of my options beginning with a search of cheap airline tickets. Searching cheap airline tickets brings up hundreds of websites for you to choose from.

There are always the major ones you see advertised on t.v. all the time such as Expedia and Travelocity. But there are also a lot of other sites that you do not see advertised. I would set aside some time to really explore the world of cheap tickets. I always try to find websites that compare prices between all the airlines. Not only will this save me time but money in the long run. Usually if you are willing to make stops and switch planes at least once or twice you will save on the cost as well. But then you leave open the option of the airline losing your luggage or delaying it in between your arrival.

When looking at an airline now you need to ask these questions: Do they charge for extra bags? Are meals or snacks included if it is going to be a long flight or is there an extra fee for this as well? What about in flight movies? Wifi? With the economy struggling and airlines trying to save money they are finding new ways everyday to nickle and dime the consumer. I would suggest bringing a drink or snack with you in your carry on if they allow. Or make sure that you eat something before you leave for your flight. Also bring a small travel pillow or something to wrap yourself in so that you won\’t have to pay extra for the comfort of a pillow or blanket.

I say if they can find ways to charge for every comfort we should find ways to make ourselves comfortable. I know that the things from my own home will make me more comfortable than anything the airline can provide anyway. There are pro\’s and con\’s to every airline. Taking the time to investigate them all can save you the most money now and give you more for the vacation.

Gr ezi and Welcome to Switzerland

An Insider’s Guide!

Switzerland may be small but we are blessed with diversity. Most think of mountain tops wrapped in eternal snow, but we’ve got a little of everything:

  • The Swiss Riviera with its palm lined avenues between Montreux and Geneva;
  • Italian “dolce vita” in the sunny Ticino with its Mediterranean climate;
  • Pristine alpine meadows full of wildflowers in the spring and bell-carrying four legged guests in the summer;
  • Delightful cities and medieval towns;
  • Numerous refreshing mineral baths and health resorts;
  • The Engadin with its special light that brings contrasts alive and attracts artists for centuries;
  • Remote valleys with picturesque villages where life hasn’t changed much over decades;
  • A unique and a diverse architectural heritage;
  • And, well, OK, our ski slopes are hard to beat!

Being a land of contrast, the scenery is visually sensual just about everywhere. Age old traditions are kept alive, languages and habits differ from region to region, even village to village. And, there’s no country better organized for taking hikes. Hands down:-)

Super Travels Pte Ltd? Super NOT FUN!

Perth, Australia

02 July 2012, 12:05

I want to warn everyone about a horrible experience I had with Super Travels Pte Ltd.

I have travelled many times with different tour agents in Singapore. It s usually a travel companion deal, 2 of you book into the tour together and share a hotel room etc. For all flight legs, I have always been on the same flight as my fellow tour members, or in the very least, with my travel companion.

But on a recent tour with Super Travels, I was put on a flight of my own. I don t even know why, neither flight was fully booked. And isn t it reasonable to assume that you will be on the same flight as your fellow tour members, or at least your travel companion, especially if as a group you have all been flying together during the tour and the tour leader leads you as a group through the airport to the gate?

What s worse, nobody from Super Travels even bothered to tell me I was not going to be travelling with my travel companion or the other tour members! I was in a foreign country, foreign airport, gates were about to close and I had just realised I was on a separate flight, the gate of which was on the other side of the airport. Imagine how panicked I was! It was a lack of professionalism and care at worst, a lack of common courtesy at best!

At least it happened to me, being an adult capable of speaking fluent English and travelling on my own. What happens if this had happened to a child or something who could not speak English?

When I complained to the company, they seemed to be saying it was your own fault on one hand, but on the other hand offering their sincerest apologies and a $200 voucher. I asked them to instead donate the money to charity. I get a patronising response clearly written by their legal department how they had no legal obligation to donate money to a charity and then because they were still sincere, they would extend their goodwill by continuing to offer me the voucher.

Talk about poor customer service! They say they are sincere, but aren t willing to demonstrate it by donating money to people who need the money more than I need another holiday, even though they are clearly running a profitable business. And they then attempt to capitalise on their error by using the lure of the voucher to convince me to spend more money with their company. Why on earth would I pay $3000+ for a service I am dissatisfied with simply to redeem a mere $200 voucher?

Sighz the business world is ruthless and people just don t seem to have heart anymore!

Great Airline Ticket Deals #travel #search

Great Airline Ticket Deals to Los Angeles

Flight Booking

Airfare is usually the most expensive part of travel or vacation. Therefore, booking the right flight is of extreme importance for hassle free and pleasant travel experience. Online booking engines, like the one on VacationSpirit, allow you unprecedented level of control over every aspect of your flight trip. Just type the travel dates and destinations in the boxes above, and you will be presented with great many options for your flight. Which one should you choose? Things like price, airline, flight time, number of connections, all come into play. Of course, each thing is of different importance to each person, but most people value the low price of the travel above all. That’s why the results in our booking engine are sorted by price. Automatically selecting the cheapest airline tickets, however, isn’t the best idea. Pay attention to the airline and the number of connections! Airlines are not the same, if you have had a repeatedly good experience with some airline, you might want to pay a little extra for it or maybe avoid a budget airline and pay a little more for a major airline, which usually tend to have better service. Number of connections is also extremely important. Usually, you are better of paying extra for a non-stop flight, than going through a hassle of additional takeoff and landing, in addition to the waiting time, and increased travel time. It all depends on the price difference. Keep in mind, that in rare cases, you might need a transit visa, even if you merely have a connection there. Now, going back to airline ticket price, if you’re flexible with your dates of travel, you can save a lot of money (especially on international flights) simply by running several searches. Here are a few tips:

  1. Start your search broad: Do not indicate specific time of travel or specific airline. Just try several different combinations of departure and arrival dates and see prices on which dates are the lowest. Then you can get more specific.
  • Enter a city for flight origin and destination: Entering an airport code (like JFK) will result in flights being displayed only from that airport, while a city will produce results from all nearby airports, making sure you will see the cheapest possible airfares.
  • Book your airline tickets early: There is a myth that it is cheaper to by airline tickets closer to the travel date. It is just that a myth. The earlier you book your flight, the more likely you are to get a low price on your airline ticket. If you have definite travel plans purchase airline tickets as much as 7-8 months in advance to ensure lowest price. A note of caution: although purchasing travel insurance is advisable when purchasing any kind of airline tickets, it is all the more important when you purchase tickets months in advance. It is harder to foresee obstacles to your travel when you book that far ahead.
  • Avoid Holidays: If your travel is not holiday-related try to avoid holidays. The low-cost airline tickets are bought of faster for hot days (like Christmas, New Year, beginning and end of school and college holidays). That makes it less likely for you to get a lower airfare. For national flights, three day weekends should be also avoided.
  • Don’t put off: Once you found a great price, do not put off purchasing the airline ticket for long. You will find that days and even hours later the fare you liked might no longer be available. If you see an airfare that you think is cheap, book it as soon as possible.
  • Visas (no, not the credit cards)

So let’s say you found a perfect airfare and want to book it. Wait. If it is an international flight, make sure whether you have all the documents and visas required for your travel or vacation. If you think that the country you are going to might not grant you visa, it is better to receive a visa before booking your airline tickets. Otherwise, just make sure that you have enough time and all the documents necessary to get all visas you need before your flight’s departure date. Usually, it takes at least 2 weeks to get a visa, and may take up to several months. So make sure you research it. Another thing to pay attention to is the expiration date on your passport. Normally, you would not be granted a visa, or admitted into a country, if your passport expires less than 3 months from your travel date. In some cases it is six months. Finally, there are many individual requirements that various countries have. Make sure you research them by going to the websites of their consulates. Visa problems are the most troublesome during travel and are very easy to prevent.

    Pack Your Bags

If you take a lot of things with you on your trip or vacation, – packing your bags properly is very important. There are two types of luggage: carry-on and check-in. As the names imply, carry-on will stay with you on the airplane, while check-in is submitted to the airline for the flight. Each airline has its own limit of the weight of each type of luggage per passenger. It is better to put things that you might need during the flight as well as expensive things into your carry-on luggage. Everything else is better to put into the check-in luggage so that you don’t have a lot of things to haul during boarding the airplane, exiting it, and flight transfers. Keep in mind that anything that can be construed as a possible weapon (for example, scissors, box-cutters, matches, sharp objects, etc) should not be put in the carry-on luggage. It will be taken away before the flight during the security check, and you may even get a fine. If you are in doubt about any items in your luggage, ask the airport security or airline representative while you still have a chance to take it from your carry-on and put it in your luggage. The bags that you check-in are being thrown quite a lot. It is a good idea to put a lot of padding around fragile items that might break during flight.

    Time Traveler

    Instructions

    1. Click on Captain Ein or Major Stein to set their starting ages.
    2. Click on the spaceship to set its speed.
    3. Click one of the twinkling stars to choose a destination and start the journey.
    4. When the spaceship lands, compare Captain Ein’s and Major Stein’s ages.

    Suggested experiments

    What happens if:

you change the speed of the spaceship?

you send the spaceship at the same speed to two stars one that is close by, and one that is far away?

Also, can you find ways to set the ages, speed, and destination so that Captain Ein and Major Stein are almost the same age when Captain Ein returns from her journey?

    Why does time change?

Ever feel like time moves very quickly and sometimes very slowly? Like how the hours fly by when you’re hanging out with a close friend, or how seconds drag on endlessly when you’re stuck in traffic on a hot day? But you can’t actually speed time up or slow it down it always flows at the same rate, right?

Albert Einstein didn’t think so. His idea was that, theoretically, the closer we come to traveling at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second), the more time would appear to slow down for us from the perspective of someone who, in relation to us, was not moving. He called the slowing of time due to motion time dilation.

Imagine you’re standing on Earth holding a clock. Your friend is in a rocket zooming past you at nearly 186,000 miles per second. Your friend is also holding a clock. If you could see your friend’s clock, you’d notice that it seems to be moving a lot more slowly than yours. Your friend, on the other hand, thinks the clock in the rocket is moving just fine, while your clock on the ground seems to be moving very fast. Sound confusing? Well, remember, it took Einstein years to figure this out, and he was pretty smart (see Genius Among Geniuses ).

    The twin paradox

Einstein came up with an example to show the effects of time dilation that he called the “twin paradox.” It’s a lot like the Time Traveler game you just played. Let’s try it out with a pair of pretend twins, Al and Bert, both of whom are 10 years old in their highly futuristic universe.

Al’s parents decide to send him to summer camp in the Alpha-3 star system, which is 25 light-years away (a light-year is the distance light travels in a year). Bert doesn’t want to go and stays home on Earth. So Al sets out on his own. Wanting him to get there as quickly as possible, his parents pay extra and send him at 99.99 percent the speed of light.

The trip to the star and back takes 50 years. What happens when Al returns? His twin brother is now 60 years old, but Al is only 10 and a half. How can this be? Al was away for 50 years but only aged by half a year. Has Al just discovered the fountain of youth?

Not at all. Al’s trip into space lasted only a half year for him, but on Earth 50 years passed. Does this mean that Al can live forever? Nope. He may have aged by only half a year in the time it took 50 years to pass on Earth, but he also only lived half a year. And since time can slow down but never goes backwards, there’s no way he could grow younger.

    The ultimate speed limit

Einstein’s idea about time slowing down sounds fine in theory, but how can you be sure he’s right? One way would be to hop in a rocket and travel near the speed of light. Yet everything we know about physics says we can’t do that.

Why? Did you notice in the Time Traveler game that the rocket could travel very fast, but could never reach 100 percent the speed of light? Well, there’s a good reason for this.

According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, objects gain mass as they accelerate to greater and greater speeds. Now, to get an object to move faster, you need to give it some sort of push. An object that has more mass needs a bigger push than an object with less mass. If an object reached the speed of light, it would have an infinite amount of mass and need an infinite amount of push, or acceleration, to keep it moving. No rocket engine, no matter how powerful, could do this. In fact, as far as we know, nothing can exceed the speed of light.

    An historic flight

There are other ways, however, to put his ideas to the test. How do we know Einstein had it right? One experiment in the 1970s provided some pretty strong evidence:

Atomic clocks are extremely accurate clocks that can measure tiny amounts of time billionths of a second. In 1971, scientists used these clocks to test Einstein’s ideas. One atomic clock was set up on the ground, while another was sent around the world on a jet traveling at 600 mph. At the start, both clocks showed exactly the same time.

What happened when the clock flown around the world returned to the spot where the other clock was? As Einstein had predicted in a general way, the clocks no longer showed the same time the clock on the jet was behind by a few billionths of a second. Why such a small difference? Well, 600 mph is fast but still just the tiniest fraction of the speed of light. To see any significant differences in time, you’d have to be traveling many millions of miles an hour faster.

Note: This feature originally appeared, in slightly different form, on NOVA’s “Einstein Revealed” Web site, which has been subsumed into the “Einstein’s Big Idea” Web site. The “Time Traveler” Shockwave game was designed by . Productions (Really Wow).

    Barcelona981

Barcelona . the old Roman Barcino, is Spain`s second city, always on the biting edge of fashion, architecture, food, style, music and good times. Walk its narrow streets and wonderful plazas, or along the Ramblas, stretching from Plaza de Cataluсa to the Harbor, encompassing the magic of the city: stalls full of books, birds and flowers. The city`s most powerful monuments open a window onto its history: the intricately carved edifices that comprise the medieval Gothic Quarter; the curvilinear modernism (Catalan Art Nouveau) that inspired Gaudн’s Sagrada Familia; and the seminal surrealist works of Picasso and Mirу, found in museums that peg Barcelona as a crucial incubator for 20th-century art. The recent restoration of the port area began with the development of a harbor for the Olympic Games of 1992. New modern squares, designed by leading artists such as Mirу and Barcelу have created a new style alongside Gaudi’s modernist buildings. Now the city is ready to show every visitor how it has been transformed into one of the most moderns and active cities in Europe.

If you want your epidermis to look wholesome and glowing, exfoliate often. By removing the top layers of your skin – you can remove the dead epidermis tissues from your skin.  This will help make your skin appear younger and have less wrinkles.

Here are a some tips on how to scrub your skin.  First, remove the dry skin prior to taking a bath.

You can use a loofah, exfoliation gloves or even a body exfoliation brush to accomplish this.

After that, apply a exfoliation cleanser to your loofah or exfoliation brush or even gloves. Then clean your body with it.  You should use delicate, circular motions to do so.

After that, use a grainy cleaning agents to clean your skin, rather than regular bar of soap.

We recommend that you use a exfoliation cleansers that contain ingredients like oatmeal, terrain almonds and sea sodium (salt).  These grainy ingredients will help to exfoliate your skin.

If you like you can also make your own exfoliate cleanser.  Its not hard to do and can save you a lot of money.  Simply, mix seashore salt, extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice together.  Then mix in some soil almonds along with powdered whole milk.

Then use a clean cloth for slight exfoliation. Additionally, rub hard spots, like heels, having a pumice stone or even stick. From then on, apply ointment containing alpha dog or try out hydroxyl acids when you exfoliate. This can continue your exfoliating procedure because the fatty acids further abrade and take dead skin cells. And finally, be sure to employ body skin lotions at least once each day. Regular exfoliation is extremely blow drying to the epidermis and will carry out more harm than good unless of course the skin will be rehydrated liberally with ointments. You can search for more details about How to scrub your skin for me and it depends upon you which strategy you will follow.

We have all heard about the usefulness of getting a foot massage.  Foot massage spa are popping up all over the United States.  The benefits of a foot massage started in China.  Where certain points in your foot connect to specific regions in your body and by apply pressure on those pressure points, you can relieve specific symptoms associated to areas within your body.

In the United States, there are two types of foot massage.  Reflexology which was described above and the second version is for relaxation purposes only.  Using basic techniques, your foot is gently massage with oils .  Through gentle, gliding strokes, the entire foot is able to relax.

But if you are looking for the type of holistic foot massage that was perfected in China, you will need to go travel to China to get that type of expert treatment.  You might be able to find an adequate substitution traveling to any China town district in your area and trying a foot massage there.  At least it will give you a general idea if it is something that you want to purpose further.

Besides it’s a lot cheaper to test it out first before you send a lot of money traveling to China.

One of the finest things to do is to take a trip and go to a spa.  We all know that traveling can be a pain in the ass.  Whether it’s for business or recreation.  Traveling can be unpleasant.  What better way to take the edge off by visiting a spa.  Airports, like Hong Kong, have the right idea.  They have spas, inside the airport so that international travelers who are waiting on their connecting flights can go to the spa, take a shower and get a massage, facial, and almost anything else that you can think off – time permitting.  I wish those amenities were available in the United States.

Inside our concept of spa travel is to go on a trip and stay at a hotel that has a great spa.  In fact, most people go to a resort or a vacation destination purely for the spa.  Not a bad idea.  I prefer looking for a hotel for what it has to offer in terms of location, rooms, price, and conveniences.  The spa is secondary.  Besides, when I get to my hotel, I like to ask for recommendations from the locals.  I figure they would know better than any article that I can read about off the Internet.

Southhall Travel – Wrong booking and worst costumer service, Review 351701

Wrong booking and worst costumer service

    Hi,

I was looking for tickets to travel to India, As my mother in law was getting operated for Brain tumor. Then I came across the website of cheap Tickets/southall Travels, but as the deal was available on phone only called them. I was put to an agent and he said he has one good deal for me if I am bit flexible. I was very happy to hear that and he said he will book me for that flight if I quickly respond to his email saying I am happy with Itinerary. I trusted him and didn t even bother to open the Pdf file and send him confirmation as said by him.

Then after 2 days I got my invoice in post and I was shocked to see that he has booked the tickets for wrong date. So I picked up the phone and called him but he was not there. Then I spoke to other agents and manager everyone but they said they cant do anything for me.

So I called Jet Airways directly but they denied to help me saying you have bought tickets through agent so we cant help. I tried and tried and eventually gave up because no one was ready to help even after I was ready to pay the difference in the fine. Instead they wanted me to pay 250 pounds per Ticket.

The story doesn t ends there. Then I write email to agent to make rest of the payment not wanting to be in other mess and giving them opportunity to say that you didn t make full payment etc etc. But he doesn t bother s to respond. Ultimately I had to call them trace someone down to sort my payment.

This is most lousy service and response from both airlines and travel agent. Instead of helping costumer and trying to make there life easy they mess it up.

I can prove that when I shared my experience with my friends I was quite surprise to know that there were many more people who had been in some or other mess because of same travel agent and there response was pathetic.

    Foot baths Edit

Although most services are ordered a la carte, if you opt for a package treatment you’ll most likely begin with a foot bath delivered by your attendant. This usually involves having your feet washed and scrubbed in a basin of warm water with flowers. A pumice stone may be applied to your feet as well as some scented oils and/or soaps. Foot baths, accompanied with a foot massage, are also popular treatments for those wanting some personal care (especially after a long day of sight seeing) but aren’t interested in the full body experience.

    Scrubs Edit

A body scrub is an exfoliating spa treatment. A therapist rubs a coarse mixture over the body to remove dead skin cells and stimulate circulation. The mixture is rinsed off leaving the skin soft and smooth. A variety of materials are used as the exfoliant – salt, sugar, apricot shells, polyethylene beads, jojoba beads, pumice, ground loofah, sand, crushed grape seed and more. This material is suspended in a liquid that can contain essential oils, oils such as sweet almond, sunflower, and coconut, herbs, and/or vitamin A, C, E. Scrubs are also known as Salt Glow, Sugar Scrub, Full Body Exfoliation. The beauty of body scrubs is that they are one of the spa treatments that you can do yourself at home with great results.

    Wraps Edit

Wraps can be enjoyed on their own or as part of a package, in which it will usually follow the scrub. During a wrap treatment, your attendant will cover you in a warm sticky covering that has the consistency of jam or jelly and comes in lovely smelling mixtures, such as papaya and aloe or more earthy concoctions such as seaweed or volcanic mud. Either way, you’ll covered from your neck down in your selection and then you’ll be wrapped up in a cocoon made from a variety of natural materials, banana leaves are common. For the next 15 – 30 minutes, you’ll be left in isolation and your skin will soak up the ingredients while you drift in and out of a light sleep.

    Facials Edit

A facial treatment can also be enjoyed on its own or as part of a spa package. When part of a package, it typically follows a wrap or scrub — after most of your body has been scrubbed and you are relaxed, you’ll be stretched out on a table and all of your attendents attention will be focused on your face, neck and head. Usually a facial involves the deep cleansing of the skin on your face and may also include a neck and/or scalp massage. A facial treatment may use scented cleansers and may last between 15 minutes and one hour.

    Massages Edit
