Road Condition Terminology

The following terms will be used to relate to winter road conditions, to maintain consistency, and keep the traveling public well informed. The NDDOT will utilize these terms to inform the public about road conditions that warrant increased awareness.

TRAVEL ALERT

Motorists can still travel but may encounter areas of challenging winter weather driving conditions on roadways. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination and be alert to conditions that may make travel difficult, change rapidly, or cause travel delays. A TRAVEL ALERT has the potential to change to a NO TRAVEL ADVISED if conditions deteriorate.

Motorists should not travel due to hazardous conditions which may make it unsafe to travel. Snow plows may be pulled from the roads during severe conditions. Motorists should take NO TRAVEL ADVISED seriously as those motorists who choose to travel at their own risk may become stranded and emergency responders may not be able to reach them safely. A NO TRAVEL ADVISED has the potential to change to a ROAD CLOSED OR BLOCKED if conditions deteriorate.

ROADS CLOSED OR BLOCKED

Motorists are not allowed to travel on a closed road due to life threatening conditions. The road may be impassible or blocked. Motorists who drive past a road closure device may be fined up to $250.

Definitions

Projects covered include state-owned and private projects in the Infrastructure, Electric Power, Oil & Gas (excluding upstream), Water and Waste, and Mining sectors.

a) Start date

b) Estimate for completion

c) Initial investment estimate

For state-owned projects, initial information about the start date and estimates for completion and investment are taken from original signed contracts, along with addendums and annexes.

If original contracts cannot be obtained, information is taken from public documents, presentations, news articles from BNamericas archives, and external sources.

In cases where contracts are subject to approval by legislators, the start date is the date of the law or legislative approval.

In the case of private projects, information is taken from public sources, such as stock exchange filings, annual reports, company presentations, third party research and press releases.

In judging the timing of investment decisions for private projects, great care was taken to differentiate between large projects receiving environmental approval and proceeding directly to construction, and smaller projects where the investment decision hinges on securing financing.

Best care is taken to ensure that recorded data is correct at the time of entry and that each entry is backed with a relevant source.

The greatest care possible was taken to ensure consistency of information in order make a like-for-like comparison in project costs. Insofar as the figures rely on disclosure by the organization or company responsible, the figures can be considered to be conservative in nature.

No attempt was made to adjust figures for inflation during the course of research or for consideration of the time value of money.

Validation

In the case of state-owned projects, validation is carried out where possible with either a member of the consortium, EPC contractor, a relevant state agency or advisors to either party.

Currency

Projects costs are measured in US dollars. Where project costs are measured in a local currency, amounts are converted to US dollars at the date of the relevant announcement, signature or report.

4. ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS

To obtain information on specific entry requirements, contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) to be visited. Violations of entry and exit requirements may result in serious penalties.

The following information on entry and exit requirements has been obtained from the Mexican authorities. However, these requirements are subject to change at any time. It is the traveller’s responsibility to check with the Embassy of the United Mexican States or its consulates for up-to-date information.

Canadian citizens, including those with dual citizenship, are required to present a valid passport in order to enter and exit Mexico. Canadians without a valid passport will be refused entry and returned to Canada.

Canadians with a criminal record might be refused entry and returned to Canada on the next available flight. Canadians in this situation should contact the Embassy of Mexico in Ottawa prior to making travel arrangements.

Permanent residents and landed immigrants of Canada should check for specific entry requirements with Mexico’s immigration authorities (Instituto Nacional de Migración, or INAMI).

Persons seeking to enter Mexico for purposes other than tourism are required to have a proper visa. Foreigners involved in unauthorized activities will be expelled. Special and diplomatic passport holders require a visa to visit Mexico. Consult the Embassy of Mexico in Canada or its consulates for more information.

I booked a ticket online through Redbus to Bangalore for travel from Hyderabad on Wednesday 22 nd April 2015 by New Dhanunjaya Travels.( booking done from icici bank net banking )

I receive a phone call from New Dhanunjaya travels at around 7pm that the bus is cancelled and as such requested me to travel by a different bus organised by them. When asked for the operators name and the seat number they did not disclose the operator s name .however the seat alloted to me was 42. I declined this offer and demanded the refund towards cancellation on part of Dhanunjaya Travels. I was informd that since this was booked through Redbus I would automatically get my refund.

So far I have not received my refund from Redbus .secondly I had to pay a higher price for booking my ticket in the late hours on the same day.

Redbus to ensure refund of my fare and also take care of hosting such irresponsible operators on their site causing lot of inconvenience to the travelling public

With an aim of Food Processing Policy 2015-2020, the AP intends to be the most preferred destination for Food Processing Industry and to capitalize on the rich and diverse food production base of Andhra Pradesh to provide fillip to the sector, Chief Secretary said.

It was proposed to organize the event in December 2016 at Vijayawada. Y.S. Prasad, CEO AP Food Processing Society, K. Dhanunjaya Reddy, Director, Agriculture Department and others attended.

How to Book a Flight with Google Flights #sunset #travel

All About Google Flights

In 2011, Google purchased ITA. the company that powers airline comparison shopping for sites like Travel ocity, Priceline, and Expedia. Their intent was to incorporate flight searches into Google, and that s exactly what they did. They ve also eliminated one of my biggest beefs with flight pricing: the incredibly long delay when you hit search. It s still far from perfect. You can t yet double up and find your hotel and rental car at the same time, for example, but I still use Google to double check that my search on a different engine is providing me with all the results and the best prices.

Getting to Google Flights

You can start by just typing a search into Google, like flights from MCI to NYC in October. The context will be enough to pull up the flights search in the left options menu in your Google search. If that fails, you can always just go directly to www.google.com/flights.

Beginning Your Search

Google Flights starts with a map of the US, because that s currently the only place you can comparison shop for tickets. International tickets are off the menu for now.

First you ll need to enter a departure point and destination. If you re logged into Google, your departure point may already be set based either on your default Google Maps location or your laptop s current location. It may also have been set by by your earlier search, which is one handy reason to start with the Google search. As soon as you ve got those points set, you ll see your proposed flight points on the map. It certainly makes it easy to verify that you did pick the right Springfield .

Next, you ll enter a date of departure and return in the box below the map.

As soon as you ve done that, you ll either see flights or a message that flights between those two points are not supported.

Filtering Results

Usually you ve got a price in mind when you search for tickets, or maybe you have a flight duration, arrival time, or specific rewards network in mind. Google can handle a lot of these requests.

First you ll notice right below the Depart and Return boxes, there are Depart and Duration boxes. You can use these individually to filter results instantly. You can also use the funky looking graphic box to the right of the Depart and Duration boxes to adjust both items at once. Once you click on that, you ll see a graphic slider with dots. You can see all the results that fit within your parameters as dots, and you can adjust the sliders until you know you ve found a good balance between convenience and availability.

Search Options

What if you don t care how long the flight is as long as it s nonstop? Google can handle that. Rather than using the graphic slider, check out the options on the left. You can limit results to nonstop flights, one stop or less, or two stops or less.

While we re at it, you can restrict your search to specific airlines, so you can stick with the company you know gives you mileage upgrades or free checked luggage. (It s still up to you to track which company that is.) You can also specify where you want to connect. That might be useful if you know you re going to wait for a three hour connection in an airport with free Wi-Fi.

Finally, you can also specify an outbound and inbound time. Click on the link marked specific time and use the slider to specify your travel window. I use this when I want to return from a conference without spending an extra night at the hotel.

Unknown Prices

Some airlines won t share their prices with ITA. Mainly it s Southwest. You have to book directly. However, Google will still show you when they re flying that day, so you can check the price with their website and then compare it to the prices you ve seen with the other airlines.

Booking Your Flight

Once you ve chosen your flight, you can click on the price, and it will turn into a button that says Book. Clicking the button takes you directly to the airline s website where you can book the flight. This even works when the flight is actually on two different airlines. You still only need to book the flight on one airline, and it will know exactly the details you need. If you re booking on Southwest or another unknown price airline, you won t get a Book button. How to book the cheapest airline flight

How airlines price their tickets is a source of many myths and urban legends. These include tips about the best day of the week to buy a ticket, last-minute discounts offered by the airlines, and the conspiracy theories suggesting that the carriers use cookies to increase prices for their passengers. None of these is entirely true.

Studies have suggested that prices can be higher or lower on a given day of the week – yet, there is no clear consensus on which day that is. Offered prices can in fact drop at any time before the flight, yet they are much more likely to increase than decrease over the last several weeks before departure. Further, the airlines prefer to wait for the last-minute business traveler who’s likely to pay full fare rather than sell the seat prematurely to a price-conscious traveler. And no, the airlines do not use cookies to manipulate fare quotes – adjusting their inventory for specific customers appears to be beyond their technical capabilities.

What is true about pricing in the airline industry is that carriers use complex, sophisticated pricing systems. The airline’s per passenger cost is the lowest when the flight is full, so carriers have incentive to sell as many seats as possible. This is a race against time for an airline, and, of course, no company wants to discount its product more than it has to. Hence, the airlines face two somewhat contradictory goals: to maximise revenue by flying full planes and to sell as many full-fare seats as possible. This is known in the industry as yield or revenue management.

Airlines and their bucket lists

Here is how yield management works. For each flight or route (if we are talking about multi-segment itineraries), the airline has a set of available price levels – from the most expensive fully refundable fare to the cheapest, deeply discounted nonrefundable price. The industry jargon for these prices is “buckets.” Seats can be interpreted as balls that are allocated among these buckets.

Initial allocation of seats among the price buckets is determined by historical data indicating how well a certain flight sells. For example, fewer deeply discounted seats will be offered on a flight on Thanksgiving week than on the same flight during the third week of February. As the seats on a flight sell, yield managers monitor and adjust the seat allocation. If, for instance, the sales are slower than expected, some of the seats might be moved to lower-priced buckets — this shows up as a price drop. As noted above, such price drops can occur at any time before the flight. However, the general trend of price quotes is upward, starting from about two to three weeks before the flight departure date.

Of course, an average traveller wants to know when he or she should buy the tickets for the next trip. Another important question is where to buy this ticket. Airlines distribute their inventory on their own Web sites and on several computer distribution systems, meaning that prices can sometimes differ depending on where one looks for them. We are not entirely sure what precipitates this phenomenon – likely explanations include differences in contracts between the airlines and the distribution systems/travel agents, implying that different travel agents may not have access to the airline’s entire inventory of available prices.

The airlines’ yield managers start looking at flight bookings about two months before the departure date. This implies that it generally does not pay to book more than two months in advance: Studies show that initially the airlines leave the cheapest price buckets empty, and yield managers may move some seats into those buckets if a couple of months before the departure date the flight is emptier than expected. From two months to about two to three weeks before the flight date, the fare quotes remain mostly flat, with a slight upward trend. However, and perhaps paradoxically, there is a good chance of a price drop during this period. We tend to monitor prices for several days – sometimes up to a week – hoping for a lower quote. It does not always pay off, but sometimes we do manage to save a considerable amount of money.

Two to three weeks before the flight date, the price quotes start increasing. This is the time when business travellers start booking. While price drops are still possible, a chance of a price increase is much higher if you wait to book within this time period. This is also the time when one can find significant differences between price quotes, depending on where one looks and what contract they have with the airlines.

Thus, if we book a trip earlier than three weeks before the flight date, we tend not to delay the purchase. At the same time, we check quotes from multiple travel agents, or go directly to a site that allows for a quick comparison of prices (such as kayak.com or skyscanner.net). Or check the airline itself.

As for answering the original question we posed, here are some simple tips. First, if you have to travel during a peak period, such as Thanksgiving week, it is generally best not to delay buying that ticket. Otherwise, it might pay to monitor the offered prices for some time before committing. The best strategy for booking within the last couple of weeks before the flight, however, is not to delay the purchase, but to try getting quotes from several agents, which is easy to do in the Internet age.

Today, Microsoft announced the launch of the Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse a full-size mouse that folds flat for portability. The Arc Touch Mouse, which measures less than 15 millimeters at its widest point, easily slides into a briefcase, purse or pocket, making it the perfect travel companion for computing on the go.

I first saw the Arc Touch Mouse at a Microsoft event back in June and received a review unit this morning. It’s a great little product and one that I definitely plan to take with me when working out of the office. While not as comfortable as my regular mouse, it is far more usable than most other travel mice I’ve tried.

Folding the Arc Touch Mouse flat requires a simple push. It turns off automatically when flattened and turns on again when popped up. A tiny magnetic snap-in Nano transceiver stores conveniently on the bottom of the mouse.

The Arc Touch Mouse features a touch scroll strip , instead of a standard scroll wheel. The scroll strip uses a capacitive sensor pad to sense the movement of your finger and has three virtual tap buttons for paging up, paging down and a user programmable middle click area.

The strip also uses haptics to provide vibrations that simulate the bumps you would feel while using a traditional scroll wheel. I liked the effect, finding it gave a very natural feeling, similar to that of a physical scroll wheel. However, the vibration also creates a clicking noise, which I could see annoying your seatmate on a flight or the person at the next table in Starbucks. Thankfully, it can easily be turned off, when necessary, through Microsoft’s IntelliPoint software.

The Arc Touch has standard left/right buttons, but no side buttons.

Microsoft claims that the two AAA batteries give the Arc Touch Mouse more than six months of battery life, and a battery life indicator lets you know when the power is running low.

Mauritius (French: L’île Maurice. Mauritian Creole: Moris ) is a small, multi-cultural island in the Indian Ocean. east of Madagascar. NorthEast of Reunion and southeast of the Seychelles. Mauritius also controls Rodrigues Island and the remote, sparsely populated Agalega and Cargados Garayos (Saint Brandon) islands.

The island of Mauritius was first discovered by Arab sailors, at some time in the 9th century, the exact date is unknown. At that time the island was uninhabited and covered in a dense forest. The Arab sailors were not interested in settling on the island which they named Dina Arobi or Dinarobin. Diogo Fernandes Pereira, a Portuguese sailor found the island in 1505 and decided to give it the name of Cerne. However, the Portuguese did not settle permanently on the island either.

The first to colonise the island were the Dutch. They took possession of the island in 1598. The Dutch settlers landed on a bay in the south-eastern part of the island which was named Warwyck Haven after the commander VanWarwyck, the bay is now known as Grand Port. Mauritius also got its name during this period; the island was named after the Prince of Holland Mauritz de Nassau.

In 1710, the Dutch abandoned the island, leaving behind macaques, the java deer, sugar cane, fugitive slaves and, also, an irreversible damage to the endemic and indigenous flora and fauna of the island – the Dodo was, by then, extinct due to extensive hunting, the bird being very easy to capture, while the once abundant black ebony tree population was almost completely depleted due to over-exploitation for its timber.

The French settled on the island in 1713, also landing at the bay in the south-east. They renamed the bay Port Bourbon and renamed the island Ile de France. They settled on the north-western side of the island and established their main harbour there, Port Louis, the present-day capital of Mauritius. During the French settlement there was a lot of development in the country. Mahé de Labourdonnais. whose statue can be seen across from the harbour in Port Louis, is known as the founder of the capital city and the island prospered under his governance (1735-1746).

In August 1810, the British tried to take over the island but lost after a fierce battle against the French in the famous Battle of Grand Port. However, the British came back in December 1810 and successfully defeated the French. From then on, the island was renamed Mauritius and remained under British rule until it attained independence.

In 1835, slavery was officially abolished and, as most of the African slaves chose to abandon the agricultural fields and move to small coastal villages, indentured labourers (coolies) were brought in from India (Tamilnadu Bihar) to work in the growing sugar-cane industry.

On 12 Mar 1968 Mauritius became an independent nation within the Commonwealth led by Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, also known as the “Father of the Nation”, led the island to independence and did a lot to develop the country.

A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, Mauritius has attracted considerable foreign investment and has one of Africa’s highest per capita incomes. Recent poor weather and declining sugar prices have slowed economic growth leading to some protests over standards of living in the Creole community.

Planning Basics

1 year + away prior to estimated departure

  • Decide why you are taking this trip. Coming up with your why will help shape your trip.
  • Choose the pillars. or must-sees for your trip. These will help shape your itinerary.
  • Come up with a preliminary budget
    • Research your pillar countries and per day costs of traveling there

    • Evaluate all your possessions
      • Make a list of what you will keep
      • Make a list of what you can get rid of (add these to the RTW Planning Spreadsheet)

    • Start selling some of your unnecessary possessions to add to your travel fund
    • Devise a plan for storing the things you will keep for after your trip

6 months 1 year prior to estimated departure

  • Find your departure date
    • Evaluate your current bank balances
    • Look at recurring monthly bills you ll have to pay while on the road
    • Come up with an amount you want to have for your coming home fund
    • Add all these figures into your RTW Planning Spreadsheet to figure out how soon you can leave
      • Figure out the total amount you need to save, divide that by your monthly savings potential, and you have how many months until your departure date
    • Set your departure date
  • Getting rid of housing
    • If you rent, look at your rental agreement and give the appropriate notice that you are moving out
    • If you own, decide on renting vs. selling
      • If selling, talk to a real estate agent and get a plan in place for when you will put your house on the market
      • If renting to someone else, look into all options
      • Ask family, friends, and friends of friends if they may be interested in renting
      • If you don t know anyone interested, have a timeline in place to take out ads in the local newspaper and on sites like Craigslist and Airbnb.
      • If renting, find a family member or close friend in your hometown to be your go-to person for any issues that may arise
  • Start the immunization process
    • Research which shots are required for the countries you will visit
    • Research which shots are recommended for the countries you will visit
    • Research costs of these shots where you live
    • Make a decision on which ones you will get
    • Schedule your first round of shots (remember that some shots are done in a series, with the first shot 6 months before the second)
  • Decide what to do about your job/career
    • If you want to return to your current job, look into sabbatical policies
    • Talk with your boss/HR about the possibility of a sabbatical or leave of absence
    • If you don t want to return to your job, start planning now for what you will do after your return
  • Passport :  If you don’t have one, order it. If you do, make sure it s valid for the length of your trip and has enough pages for stamps for each country you will visit

Blame game over Bella Bond’s death in full swing ahead of the coming trial

BOSTON – He persistently searched for drugs, hitting up his dealer over 306 times in August and September 2015, until his arrest for the murder of Bella Bond.

She has a history of neglecting children before she even met him.

Those are the arguments that Rachelle Bond, the mother of Bella Bond, and Michael Patrick McCarthy, the 35-year-old Quincy man she once lived with in Dorchester, are tossing at each other in court documents.

The body of Bella Bond washed up on Deer Island in Winthrop in June 2015. For months she was known as “Baby Doe,” before a tipster pointed police to Bond and McCarthy. Bond later claimed McCarthy pummeled the child and stuffed her body in a refrigerator before throwing the body into the sea.

Bond was charged as an accessory after the fact. while McCarthy was charged with the child’s murder. They are being tried separately: Bond’s trial is set for December 2016, while McCarthy’s trial hasn’t been scheduled yet.

But a review of legal filings in Suffolk Superior Court shows the case devolving into a “he said, she said” affair as Bond and McCarthy, through their attorneys, blame each other for the youngster’s death and seek each other’s medical and psychiatric records.

Jonathan Shapiro, McCarthy’s attorney, in a filing earlier this summer, said Bond is the only person linking McCarthy to Bella Bond’s death.

“His defense at trial will be that Bond was solely responsible for Bella’s death, and that she falsely implicated him to escape blame,” Shapiro wrote, seeking records from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) that will show “a pattern of abuse and neglect.”

McCarthy believed – as did Dorchester neighbors — Bond had lost Bella to DCF because two previous children were taken away, Shapiro wrote.

“The facts of the two DCF investigations into Bond’s treatment of Bella, in addition to information about the two prior terminations of Bond’s parental rights, will show Bond’s history of mistreating her children prior to McCarthy’s involvement in her life,” he added. The pair met in Feb. 2015, according to Shapiro.

But Bond’s attorney Janice Bassil, in her own filing, said the records contain “no accusations concerning physical abuse.”

“The history of these cases is complicated and cannot be boiled down to a single reason or event that resulted in her loss of custody. At no time was she accused of physically hurting her children,” she wrote.

“McCarthy’s attempt to blame the entire death and disposal of the child’s body on Rachelle Bond is disingenuous at best,” she added.

As for her defense, Rachelle Bond “anticipates that she may present a defense based on Michael McCarthy’s behavior towards her, compounded by her own mental health issues, including a long standing history of post traumatic stress disorder,” Bassil wrote.

Bond’s statements to police aren’t the only link between McCarthy and Bella’s death, Bassil added, since the weights used to bring down the body when it was allegedly tossed into the water came from a shop owned by Michael McCarthy’s father in Quincy, and matched other weights located inside the business.

The location where Bond says Bella was thrown into the sea is only accessible by car, her attorney said. “Only Michael McCarthy had an automobile.”

Bond has claimed she didn’t previously bring up Bella’s death because McCarthy threatened her and kept her sedated with heroin.

Shapiro, McCarthy’s attorney, wrote that Bond freely came and went from the Dorchester apartment during the summer of 2015. “Bond never indicated she needed help,” he wrote in a court filing.

He continued: “At a McCarthy family reunion in Nashua, NH, that Bond and McCarthy attended in July 2015, Bond was relaxed and acted normally, and even went swimming in the pool.”

McCarthy also maintained a regular schedule, going by himself to a methadone clinic and attending Mass at Sacred Heart Parish in North Quincy with his father every Sunday that summer, according to Shapiro’s filing.

Bond even asked McCarthy to get drugs for her in June 2015, he added.

But Bassil, Bond’s attorney, said McCarthy wasn’t just going to the clinic and the church.

“His text messages and telephone records. reveal a constant search for drugs and contact with his drug dealer over 306 times in August 2015 until his arrest in mid-September, consistent with Rachelle Bond’s statement concerning his sedation of her with heroin,” Bassil wrote.

Shapiro said both McCarthy’s brother and father have admitted that he was addicted to heroin for at least 10 years.

McCarthy’s methadone treatment and other records “would neither bolster Bond’s credibility nor aid in her defense,” he wrote.

The next court date for both Bond and McCarthy is Sept. 27 in Suffolk Superior Court.

Kimchi: South Korea’s efforts to boost its national dish

Korea’s sour and spicy national dish, kimchi, has begun popping up in supermarkets and on restaurant menus in Europe and the US. Even America’s First Lady Michelle Obama has shared her recipe. And the government is hoping it will spearhead a drive to promote Korean food overseas.

Standing in her well-equipped kimchi laboratory, her coral lipstick bright against her white lab coat, Kim Soon-ja directs a team of research assistants in their latest project. Giant flasks of pink and yellow kimchi stock tower over the work-table, as they test salt levels in a petri-dish of spicy gloop.

Mrs Kim is South Korea’s kimchi Grand Master, and a secret weapon in expanding the appeal of the country’s national dish.

“I started to experiment with kimchi recipes when I was a child,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”

Few Koreans could. Kimchi, traditionally made with cabbage, is seen as synonymous with national culture, credited with fighting off infections, the respiratory illness SARS and even cancer.

The annual Korean ritual of making it has recently been listed as by the UN cultural organisation Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Quite a lot for a humble dish of fermented vegetables.

“Kimchi is symbolic of Korea,” said Dr Park Chae-lin of the World Kimchi Institute in Gwangju. “One can see it on every meal table throughout the day.”

“And because [Koreans have] been exposed to it from such a young age, there’s a feeling of nostalgia for it when they get older: the flavour of their mother’s kimchi. It’s part of the identity of Koreans.”

So why is Mrs Kim tinkering around with a national icon?

The answer lies many thousands of miles away – in the factories of China and the restaurants of the West.

Kimchi has already started to appear on upscale London menus. New pop-up snack stalls are offering kimchi-topped burgers or Korean-flavoured tacos to the city’s cosmopolitan lunchtime crowd.

This new visibility is partly the result of South Korea’s growing cultural prominence, and partly the fruit of a long-running government campaign to promote Korean food overseas.

“Ever since Korea hosted the Olympics in 1988,” says Dr Park, “there was a strong drive to introduce kimchi to the world, as a food that represented Korea.”

“But there was also a hesitation back then; a lack of confidence about whether people would really like it, or would be put off by the garlic smell.”

Kimchi is traditionally made by adding a paste of chilli, garlic and fish sauce to salted cabbage, and allowing it to ferment – sometimes for several months, or even years. It has a distinctive sharp-sour smell and a robust, spicy flavour, which varies between each batch, and each family recipe.

Korea may be more confident now, but the old recipes, says Mrs Kim, are still considered too spicy and too “aromatic” for modern global tastes.

“Foreigners don’t like it too spicy. Even Korean children don’t like it too strong these days.”

“These pink and yellow liquids are my new patented kimchi mixtures,” she said. “They’re less spicy, less salty and they have no smell at all.”

This year, the government is due to invest almost $9m (£5.5m) in R D into Korean traditional foods, with kimchi at the forefront of that campaign.

There is another $34 million (£21m) available for improving manufacturing facilities. But then there are strong reasons, aside from cultural diplomacy, why the government might be keen to promote its national icon overseas.

China competition

For all South Korea’s pride in kimchi, its trade statistics reveal a different story: that South Korea is a net importer of its national dish.

In 2012, the country imported almost eight times the amount of kimchi it exported, with most of those imports coming from China.

Kimchi produced there is cheaper, but few Koreans know they’re eating it, because Chinese-made kimchi doesn’t appear on supermarket shelves here: sales staff say that customers would not buy it.

Instead, it ends up in the catering industry, where it’s hidden from view.

Worried by China’s growing role as a kimchi producer, the South Korean government is planning to tighten rules on restaurants this year, insisting they list the origin of their ingredients prominently for customers to see.

“We need to raise awareness of the true value of Korean national kimchi” said Lee Yong-jik, deputy director at the Ministry of Agriculture’s kimchi department.

Many Koreans, like him, insist that national geography is crucial to kimchi’s alleged anti-bacterial properties.

“The ingredients are really important,” Mrs Kim explained in her kimchi lab, “not to mention the water, the temperature and also the humidity.”

“It’s Korea where those elements exist, so the kimchi made in Korea is full of very healthy enzymes. In China, the ingredients are different, and the environment is different as well, so you don’t get the same enzymes. Korean kimchi and Chinese kimchi are two totally different things.”

Perhaps the ultimate irony in all this is that, as government investment and global interest in their national dish grows, Koreans themselves are eating less of it.

“Domestic consumption has dropped dramatically,” says Dr Park of the World Kimchi Institute.

“People rarely have all three meals at home these days, they’re trying to eat less salty foods, and there’s more choice available. Western foods are becoming much more common, even at home, and people don’t tend to eat kimchi with spaghetti.”

The government has noticed the trend too – and wants to reverse it.

“We’re trying to educate people,” said Mr Lee of the Agriculture Ministry. “To get them accustomed to Korean food, starting from childhood; hold training courses, and make it fun for families.”

With increasing competition from overseas producers, and declining consumption at home, kimchi, as one prominent politician put it, “is going through an ordeal as harsh as a Korean winter”.

But its place on Western menus also offers South Korea the chance to reinvent its iconic, home-spun dish. Mrs Kim’s formula for foreigners may end up working quite well at home.

Onion Strings

Onion Strings are buttermilk soaked and lightly seasoned fried onions. Perfect for topping burgers, a snack or green bean casserole.

Onion strings are also known as French fried onions or onion straws. They are very thinly sliced sweet onion bathed in buttermilk to remove the sting and then tossed in a seasoned flour mix and flash fried. If you are an onion ring lover, then you are also an onion string lover.

Onion strings are hugely verstile. While I like to just munch on mine like a snack, hubby loves his on a Cowboy Burger. You can also put them on Hot Dogs, toss onion strings into a salad. use them on a green bean casserole or even serve them as a side dish for breakfast. lunch or dinner. Even use them as an accent on top of deviled eggs. in stuffing or on top of any dish that needs a little pizzazz.

The hands-on time to make onion strings is fairly minimal, although there is about an hour of passive time to let them soak up all the delicious buttermilk goodness. You can even make them ahead of time and store them in an airtight container at room temperture. While I don t suggest microwaving them, reheating is super easy in the oven. Just heat on 350 degrees for 5 minutes or low broil for 2-3 minutes. How will you eat your onion strings ?

Starting thinly, thinly (did I say thin?) cutting your onion into rings. Remember, these are onion strings, not onion rings, so they need to be super thin. Make sure you are using a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer. Separate onion rings and place into a shallow dish.

Cover onions with buttermilk, tossing until all covered. Set aside at room temperture, tossing every 10-15 minutes to ensure they are all marinating evenly.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, ground black pepper and celery salt.

Fill a large, heavy bottom pan with 2 inches of vegetable oil. Heat to 375 degrees.

Working in batches, use a slotted spoon or your fingers to remove onions from buttermilk, tapping to remove any excess liquid. Drop into flour mixture, turn to coat and then carefully place in hot oil.

Fry for 3-4 minutes, or until lightly brown. Remove to a paper towel lined baking sheet or plate to drain.

Continue with remaining onions.

Best Free Intrusion Prevention and Detection Utility for Home Use (HIPS)

Introduction

Gone are the days when a virus was a virus and everything else was, well, different! Now known collectively as “Malware” these threats are constantly evolving and pose a serious challenge to security software. Signature based scanners give the most reliable detection results but these are limited by the frequency of their database updates. To compliment signature recognition software, HIPS programs were developed which look for behavior on your PC which is “characteristic of malware activity”. The user is then presented with an alert to either allow or block the event. Some programs automate this process which can occasionally lead to problems. See my article HIPS Explained which deals with this and other issues in more detail.

Evaluating the performance of HIPS programs is far from easy and any so called “test results” should be viewed with a degree of caution. It is straightforward enough to feed malware files to a selection of signature scanners and then count what they find to arrive at a score. AV Comparatives provides an admirable service here and the results are always consistent and reliable. There is no such definition line possible for testing HIPS software and my feeling is that some of the vendors may possibly use this to their own advantage (“hype”).

My objective in reviewing this software is to help users make an informed choice about the suitability of the products for their own requirements. In addition to information obtained from the various producers, I have used two methods to collect the necessary data and tried to present my analysis in a factual and entertaining manner. Part of my review is based on personal usage of the software concerned and I will be updating information about my component set-up on this page. I have also used third party data collected from sources I know to be reliable such as other forums where I have known some of the posters for several years. In reality no one can ever duplicate the system you use and the software reviewed may react quite differently between one PC and another. Ultimately, the best way to judge the suitability of these programs for yourself is to try them.

The value of HIPS as a standalone program has degraded over time. At one point there were many to choose from including what was IMO the best, EQSecure. Online Armor started life as a HIPS before a firewall was added and the Privatefirewall HIPS component, DSA, (Dynamic Security Agent) was also available as a separate program. Now most HIPS are integrated into a firewall and highly automated in an attempt to prevent users from making a wrong decision and crippling their system. ZoneAlarm Free firewall is a good example of a lightweight integrated HIPS that does “enough” but without being too intrusive. http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firew. Many antivirus programs now also include similar components to protect against unauthorized registry changes for instance. The HIPS component in Privatefirewall was always highly regarded. What Does the Small Intestine Do?

Your small intestine is a bundled up, continuous tube located in your abdomen that receives food from the stomach at the duodenum, digests and absorbs food in the jejunum, and deposits food into the large intestine at the ileocecal valve. Stretched out, the small intestine of the average adult measures 5 meters in length and about 3 centimeters in diameter. Although, it is much longer than the large intestine, it has a much narrower diameter, thus accounting for its name. The majority of food digestion and nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine.

The small intestine receives partially digested food from your stomach. At the point when food reaches the duodenum of the small intestine, it has been mixed with stomach acid and manually broken up by the contraction of the stomach walls. The smaller the pieces of food, the better able your body is to absorb the nutrients because many small pieces of food have much greater surface area than fewer large pieces of food. This surface area allows for greater exposure to the microvilli of the small intestine to absorb the maximum possible number of nutrients. Let s examine how the body deals with carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the small intestine. Microvilli are small, finger like appendages attached to the larger villi that line the walls of your small intestine. Combined, the microvilli and villi increase the surface area inside your small intestine to 500 meters squared, whereas, if the intestinal walls were smooth with no ridges, the surface area would only be 1/2 a meter squared. Think of your microvilli as little nutrient vacuums inside your small intestine.

Lipid molecules (lipid means fat) must be broken down into very small globules in order to be taken up by the microvilli in your small intestine. Pancreatic lipase ( lip refers to fat and ase means the breaking down of ) is made in the pancreas and secreted through the pancreatic duct into the duodenum, the first portion of the small intestine after the stomach. Lipase is aided by bile from the gallbladder. Bile orients the fatty acids so that their hydrophobic ( water fearing ) heads point towards each other in the center, away from the watery intestinal walls, to allow the pancreatic lipase to break down triglycerides (fancy name for fat molecule) into glycerol and free fatty acids which can be absorbed by the microvilli.

Starchy and sugary foods consist mostly of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are long strings of sugar molecules. Pancreatic amylase breaks down starch molecules into oligosaccharides. Then, sucrase, lactase and maltase (remember ase means the breaking down of and sucrose, lactose and maltose are different types of sugar molecules), break down the smaller components into molecules that can be absorbed and used in the body. It is interesting to note that lactase is absent in many adults; thus rendering them lactose intolerant . Lactose is the sugar in milk. Without lactase, our intestines are unable to digest milk products, resulting in a gaseous, upset, sick feeling, with diarrhea, and flatulence.

Protein digestion begins in the stomach with chemical and mechanical breakdown into smaller protein pieces and polypeptide chains. A protein is a long peptide chain (poly means many ). Polypeptides are long chains of amino acids. Amino acids are absorbed by the microvilli of the small intestine. The pancreas secretes trypsin and chymotrypsin into the duodenum of the small intestine to break down proteins into amino acids.

How Does Absorption Happen?

Within the microvilli of the small intestine are networks of capillaries and lymph vessels called lacteals. Capillaries are the smallest components of your blood vessels, the site at which your blood exchanges nutrients, oxygen and waste products with your body s tissues. Simply put, nutrients diffuse into your blood vessels through chemical and electrical gradients: in a very short, very oversimplified summary, substances will move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration and the cells in our tissues facilitate this by changing their chemical concentrations and electrical charges. Fat molecules are taken up by lacteals; little balloons of lymph tissue that merge with other lacteals to form lymphatic vessels responsible for circulating lymph fluid. Lacteals make it into our bloodstream for distribution to our tissues via the subclavian vein (sub = under and clavian = clavicle). Fats in the bloodstream are called chylomicrons.

Not all digested matter from our food makes it to the bloodstream. Whatever is left after our small intestine sucks out all of the nutrients passes onto our large intestine. Here, water and salt are reclaimed for the body, the waste is concentrated and comes out our anus as stool. What I find really interesting is that between the mouth and the anus is one, long continuous, open ended tube. What goes in, must come out. At risk of being too gross, I will mention that the color of your stool can be indicative of a number of illnesses of the pancreas, the liver, the gallbladder and more; since the color of stool is dependent both upon what we eat and what we use to digest food. for example, grey or whitish stool can indicate a problem with your liver or gallbladder. What can your poo tell you?

There is no road tax in Canada.

In Canada as in the UK all cars must have a valid insurance policy with a minimum of third party cover. There are several differences between the Canadian car insurance system and the UK though, most notably that there must be a minimum amount of liability cover. In Quebec that minimum amount stands at $50,000 although for the rest of the country it is $200,000. Newfoundland and Labrador is the only territory or province of Canada that doesn’t require drivers to cover their own medical insurance costs and loss of income though injuries sustained in a road accident.

The Canadian car insurance can be bought at three levels. The minimum level is the third party cover which is the legal requirement on all motor vehicles. This type of insurance will pay for any damage sustained to the third parties car, property or person if the accident is the fault of the insured driver. The Collision policy will cover damage to the insured drivers own car if the accident is their own fault and the Comprehensive cover pays out in cases of vandalism and theft as well as covering for collision and third party liability.

Car insurance in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan is provided by companies run by the government; there is however private firms that will provide additional car insurance cover over the statutory coverage. All other provinces and territories have their own private insurance companies. Some areas such as in Quebec have a system of administrators who are run by the government who process the claims made relating to personal injury or death caused by a road accident, while private companies deal solely with the damage to property and vehicles.

It is possible to insure a foreign vehicle in Canada, so any expat moving to the country who wishes to take their own car with them can do so easily. The safety standards for Canadian road vehicles are extremely high and any cars being imported must meet the strict criteria. The car must also be officially registered once in the country. These rules do not apply if only visiting the country for a short period, such as for tourism. The vehicle cannot however be sold in Canada and cannot stay in the country longer than the owners tourist visa or work permit allows.

US car insurance usually has the option to cover tourist travel in Canada, but if you are travelling from the US you must first make sure your policy covers you for the minimum liability cover Canadian law requires as the minimum in the US is far lower.

Car insurance in Canada is well known for being costly. If you need to obtain a Canadian car insurance policy then there are several things that are required. A Canadian driving licence is a must have item. Those with a foreign licence will rarely be given insurance in Canada. With your driving licence you must also provide proof of your name and address and your driving record. As in the UK you also need to provide details of the vehicle to be insured such as make and model, registration number and current mileage. Your new car insurance company will also ask for information regarding your current insurer and also past insurers. Your current or previous insurer should also provide you with a letter that officially states your no claims bonus, which you can then use for discounted insurance premiums as in the UK. The no claims bonuses that come from foreign drivers may be rejected by the Canadian car insurance companies as they are not legally obliged to accept them.

Once you have an insurance policy in place the company will send over a certificate to you and also a card to carry with you at all times. The police can stop you at any time and ask you to produce your insurance details. You must always have it with you.

Making a claim on your car insurance policy is done in a similar way to a claim in the UK. Some companies insist on claims being made within 7 days of any accident, but the rest of the process remains the same. Some car insurance companies in Canada have their own preferred car repair shops and therefore you must wait for the go ahead from the insurance company before undertaking any repairs yourself. If making a claim against another driver’s insurance you must contact them personally within 7 days of the accident.

The Lakeside Technology Center (350 East Cermak) is a 1.1 million square foot multi-tenant data center hub owned by Digital Realty Trust. Originally developed by the R.R. Donnelley Co. to house the printing presses for the Yellow Book and Sears Catalog, 350 East Cermak was converted to telecom use in 1999, and today it is one of the world’s largest carrier hotels and the nerve center for Chicago’s commodity markets, housing data centers for financial firms attracted by the wealth of peering and connectivity providers among the 70 tenants.

The industrial strength infrastructure includes four fiber vaults and three electric power feeds, which provide the building with more than 100 megawatts of power. 350 East Cermak is currently the second-largest power customer for Commonwealth Edison, trailing only Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Grid power is supported by more than 50 generators throughout the building, which are fueled by multiple 30,000 gallon tanks of diesel fuel.

One of the most distinctive features of the facility is its cooling system, which is supported by an 8.5 million gallon tank of a refrigerated brine-like liquid (seen at left in the top photo). The huge tank serves as thermal energy storage for the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), including the nearby McCormick Place Exposition Center and Hyatt Regency Hotel as well as 350 East Cermak. Thermal energy storage can reduce costs by running chillers during off-peak hours when power rates are lower.

This hallway provides a glimpse of the Gothic architecture that provides a sense of atmosphere not seen at most data center buildings.

The building may have its exterior flourishes, but underneath it s industrial-strength ifnrastructure. This view of one of the four main risers provides a sense of the power and fiber infrastructure.

It began to emerge in the 17th century, but many of the foundational principles by which modern hospice services operate were pioneered in the 1950s by Dame Cicely Saunders. when she opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in 1967. St. Christopher’s Hospice in London emphasized the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for the dying, the regular use of opioids to control physical pain and careful attention to social, spiritual and psychological suffering in patients and families.

Within the United States. the term is largely defined by the practices of the Medicare system and other health insurance providers, which make hospice care available, either in an inpatient facility or at the patient’s home, to patients with a terminal prognosis who are medically certified at hospice onset to have less than six months to live.

Hospice care also involves assistance for patients’ families to help them cope with what is happening and provide care and support to keep the patient at home.

In 1969, Elisabeth wrote On Death and Dying. coining the 5 stages of death: Shock/Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.

    Home Dashboards Using Executive Dashboards for Hospital Management

    Those of us who have done dashboard projects in multiple industries know that the first step is to understand that vertical s particular workflows, business rules and measures of performance. Finding out what KPIs to display on the enterprise dashboard for a particular type of business is no easy task unless you have first hand knowledge of that industry. Most consultants called in to implement a business dashboard don t really know the industry first hand and must rely on the client s subject matter experts. That is fine, but the dashboard vendor or consultant must do as much preparation in studying the client s business as much as possible in advance. Yes, your particular expertise may be in dashboarding as a horizontal service, but as nice as your dashboard looks and works, it will not succeed if it doesn t measure the right things.

    For anyone involved in healthcare-related performance dashboards, here is a great primer on the workflows for a hospital. This is from a vendor named statcom and, while it is a sales and marketing tool, it does offer plenty of value-add and education for us dashboarders. It is offered as an interactive flash hospital workflow and patient flow simulator. I ve grabbed a couple of screenshots of the demo as well as the different executive dashboards involved:

    After launching the demo, there is a nice interactive menu as you can see. By the way, here is the link to the hospital workflow simulator. Even this menu listing is of value to someone new in this space, as it breaks down the functions and groups within a healthcare facility: Hospital executives, Emergency Department, Patient and Family Communications, Bed Management, Hospital Support Services, Procedure Centers, Perioperative Services, Physicians and Nurses, Diagnostic Services, Case Management, Clinical Support Services.

    Here are some dashboards that track key performance indicators in a hospital:

    This first one is an executive dashboard for upper management. They call it a Business Activity Monitoring Dashboard. KPIs include: LOS (length of stay) statistics, Projected Occupancy, Average Bed Turns, Accuracy of Discharge Predictions, Emergency Department Disposition to Bed Placement in Unit, and the unfortunately-named Average Dead Bed Time (ouch. ).

    The Emergency Department Dashboard shows real time performance metrics such as Cycle times from door to discharge, milestone measurements of door to disposition, triage to disposition and triage to MD assessment, Diagnostic turnarounds and patient statistics such as the number of patients that are Emergency Department Boarders, Leaving against Medical Advice and (unfortunately) Expired.

    The hospital case management dashboard show key stats such as:

    • Occupancy predictions by day of week (based upon estimated day of discharge)
    • Average time of day that patients are discharged by unit (running 7-day average)
    • Time from case management referral to completion
    • Case Management order status

    Bed management is of course a major focus in hospitals and we have seen several bed managment dashboards before on the Dashboard Spy. This one, according to statcom, provides bed managers a real-time view of bed availability and discharge status including:

    • Occupied and available beds across the system and by unit
    • Number of critical and telemetry beds available
    • Number of observation patients
    • Length of stay (LOS) and discharge statistics from time a discharge order is written until the patient actually leaves the room
    • Key hospital support service performance relative to bed turns, such as Environmental Services: stat turnaround, clean next bed turnaround, last bed on the Unit turnaround, and routine turnaround
