College of Education and Human Development – UTSA – University of

Purpose of Program

This program is designed for students who want to work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Common roles and functions of the School Psychologist include psychological assessment, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, research, and program evaluation. School Psychologists work with students, their families, and school staff in order to help students be as successful as possible in school. The program is designed to provide students the academic and practical training necessary to become licensed as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, which is a nationally-recognized professional certification granted by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Program Options

The National Association of School Psychologists and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists both require master’s and specialist-level programs in School Psychology to include at least 60 hours of coursework, including practicum and internship. These entities also provide very specific courses and domains of competence that must be reflected in the curriculum. The degree requirements and curriculum reflect these standards, which will facilitate the professional accreditation of the program and the licensure of our graduates. The requirements also are consistent with those of other School Psychology programs within the state.

The Master of Arts in School Psychology is a 66-hour program, and typically requires three to four years to complete. The program includes coursework and field-based experiences related to psychological assessment, intervention, learning, child development, psychopathology, research, statistics, and professional issues. Students also complete a full-time internship in a school setting. Due to the clinical nature of this program and number of hours required, the degree does not have a Thesis option.

Career Opportunities

School Psychology has been identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as a specialization that is likely to have faster than average employment growth. In addition, Texas has been identified as a state that will encounter one of the most serious shortages of School Psychologists in the near future. Thus, the job prospects for School Psychologists are very favorable. Minority and bilingual school psychologists are especially needed given the increasing diversity of public schools.

Job Outlook/Earnings

How much will you make? Will there be jobs when you graduate? How much will you owe after graduation?

  • Grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework for the baccalaureate degree, as well as in all graduate-level coursework taken (if applicable). How Much Birth Control Would Cost Under The AHCA #birth #control,

Here’s How Much Your Birth Control May Cost Under AHCA

Like Us On Facebook

The American Health Care Act. the GOP health care plan that aims to repeal and replace Obamacare, has narrowly passed in the House, and currently awaits a vote in the Senate.

The controversial bill has been met with considerable pushback, as it would ultimately leave 24 million Americans without health insurance by 2026, according to an analysis from the Congressional Budget Office.

Should the legislation pass, women are poised to face especially complex challenges when it comes to accessing birth control, which has been covered by Obamacare thanks to the “birth control benefit .”

The Affordable Care Act requires insurance plans to cover all Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved methods of birth control for women without having to pay any out-of-pocket costs.

Under the AHCA, however, women would no longer be able to reap any of those benefits.

While Republicans may view a woman’s access to birth control as a “nitty-gritty detail ” in crafting health care legislation, any woman of child-bearing age can assure you the issue is far from trivial.

Let’s talk about how much each contraceptive method actually costs when you pay out-of-pocket.

While the prices vary depending on the circumstances, for most brands, a pack of birth control pills (which typically provides a month’s worth of contraception) can cost as much as $50 .

However, it’s important to remember that only 17 percent of women who use a form of birth control are taking the pill.

The intrauterine device, or IUD, is another commonly used method, though it demands a much steeper price out-of-pocket.

Popular IUD brands like Mirena and Kyleena can cost anywhere between $500 and over $800 .

Similarly, a birth control implant can set you back $800 without insurance .

Unfortunately, the prices aren’t much kinder on your wallet as you make your way through the rest of the viable birth control options. Without insurance, you could pay up to $250 for the Depo-Provera shot. and $80 a month for the Nuvaring .

Mind you, these costs don’t even factor in the doctors’ visits to obtain these prescriptions, nor the follow-up visits, all of which do not come free without insurance.

So, what about Planned Parenthood?

Fortunately, clinics like Planned Parenthood provide amazing resources to women seeking forms of contraception but lack the health insurance to pay for it.

Not so fortunately, the latest version of AHCA plans to nix federal funding of the organization and bar patients from using any Medicaid dollars to access treatment at Planned Parenthood clinics.

To put this in perspective, in 2015, approximately 43 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget. or around $500 million, came from federal grants and reimbursements, according to NPR.

Moreover, 60 percent of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding comes from Medicaid and Title X reimbursements for preventative and primary care, which includes not only birth control, but cancer screenings. as well.

Even if the AHCA manages to garner enough votes in the Senate, this does not mean Planned Parenthood will vanish overnight.

But they will lose a huge chunk of their funds, and we as patients could see an extremely alarming drop in the quality of their services.

Plus, according to the Government Accountability Office, approximately 390,000 women could lose access to preventative care. and as many as 650,000 women would receive reduced preventative care.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, discussed the potential impact of the GOP health care plan in the following statement:

This is the worst bill for women’s health in a generation. This disastrous legislation once again makes being a woman a pre-existing condition; ‘defunds’ Planned Parenthood; guts maternity coverage; strips 24 million of their health insurance; lets insurance companies charge people with pre-existing conditions exorbitant rates; forces new moms back to work shortly after giving birth; and reduces access to contraception.

In short, this bill makes it harder to prevent unintended pregnancy, harder to have a healthy pregnancy, and harder to raise a family. Alarm bells should be ringing in every house across America.

Richards urges the Senate to “ listen to the American people and reject the worst bill for women’s health in a generation.”

While it’s up to your health care provider whether or not to cover birth control, and some states, like New York. have made a plan to continue making coverage mandatory, the Trump administration has made it painfully clear that women’s health is at the bottom of their priority list.

  • Democrats seek suspension of Jared Kushner s security clearance, pending Russia

Yahoo!-ABC News Network | 2017 ABC News Internet Ventures. All rights reserved.

Democrats seek suspension of Jared Kushner’s security clearance, pending Russia probe

WATCH Jared Kushner meets with Netanyahu on first day of Middle East trip

House Democrats are raising concerns about the security clearance held by President Trump ’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. saying suspicions about his contacts with Russian officials should be enough to suspend his access to sensitive information.

“When there are credible allegations that employees may be unfit to continue accessing classified information, security clearances are supposed to be suspended while the allegations are investigated,” wrote Rep. Elijah Cummings. the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, in a letter to White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. “Mr. Kushner reportedly failed to disclose contacts with dozens of foreign officials on his security clearance application.”

Aides to Kushner did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the letter from Cummings and the other Democrats on the Oversight Committee, which was accompanied by a demand for Kushner’s security clearance application and for “all documents and communications referring or relating to Mr. Kushner’s contacts or communications with Russian government officials or business representatives.” Cummings’ letter is the latest in a drumbeat of efforts by Democrats in Congress. More than 40 members wrote with similar concerns in May.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment.

As a senior adviser to Trump and as someone tasked with helping orchestrate Middle East peace talks, Kushner likely has access to highly sensitive intelligence. According to the letter, his top-secret clearance is temporary, pending a routine screening by the FBI.

The FBI has not identified Kushner as a target of its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, recently taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller. Sources familiar with a parallel probe by the Senate Intelligence Committee, however, have confirmed to ABC News that Kushner’s previously undisclosed meetings with Russian officials have drawn the attention of its investigators. Senate investigators have requested documents from Kushner and are negotiating with him to arrange an interview. Through his attorney, Kushner has indicated his desire to cooperate with that probe.

The challenge to Kushner’s security clearance comes as the White House is facing questions about its decision to continue to allow retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn to access to the nation’s most carefully guarded secrets when he served as Trump’s national security adviser, even after Department of Justice officials warned that Flynn may have been susceptible to blackmail by Russian diplomats. The New York Times reported Wednesday that, for three weeks before he was fired, Flynn sat in on the most sensitive intelligence briefings in the White House.

He has denied anything improper occurred during his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. and sources close to Flynn have told ABC News they consider it ludicrous that anyone could have concluded he was vulnerable to blackmail.

Cummings, however, takes issue with the administration’s decision to continue allowing Flynn access to sensitive information after Justice Department lawyers notified the White House of their concerns.

“Concerns about Gen. Flynn’s false statements — as well as his concealment of communications with the Russian ambassador — raised obvious security concerns that should have resulted in an immediate suspension of his clearance while an investigation of the allegations proceeded,” Cummings wrote.

Kushner’s lawyer Jamie Gorelick. a deputy attorney general under Bill Clinton, said that on Jan. 18, Kushner filed an extensive security questionnaire known as the SF86, with an offer the next day to the FBI to provide omitted details of his Russian contacts during his background check interview by agents in person, The New York Times reported.

The SF86 requires applicants for security clearances to disclose — under criminal penalty for significant omissions — minute details of their life, including specific dates and purposes of foreign travel and any “close and/or continuing contact” with foreign nationals or receipt of foreign payments in the previous seven years.

The fact that Kushner received an interim security clearance despite failing to disclose all his contacts with the Russian ambassador and a Kremlin-owned bank is very unusual, according to one legal expert.

“It’s highly out of the ordinary for how it’s supposed to be done,” said Bradley Moss, a national security lawyer who handles cases involving intelligence community workers’ clearance problems.

Investigators conducting government background checks for those applying for top-secret clearances understand that people make mistakes on their SF86 disclosures and sometimes have to submit supplemental information, but Moss said he has never heard of an interim clearance being given to anyone who failed to disclose contacts with a foreign government.

“If Kushner’s clearance is still being adjudicated and there is this red flag of his failure to properly report numerous contacts with foreign government officials on his SF86, that would be major matter of concern, in terms of him being in charge of this mission to the Middle East,” Moss said.

Cummings and other House Democrats have no power to force the administration to rescind Kushner’s clearance. Trump has final word on who gets a security clearance when it comes to his staff, as the chief executive, by law, is the ultimate authority.

    (For new patients only)

    (For Adults and Children)

Center for Adult, Teenagers Children Psychiatry, Medication Management Counseling

Approximately 15 million adult Americans have depression.

Parents of children with a history of ADHD report almost 3 times as many peer problems as those without a history of ADHD (21.1% vs. 7.3%).Parents report that children with a history of ADHD are almost 10 times as likely to have difficulties that interfere with friendships (20.6% vs. 2.0%).*

The average age of ADHD diagnosis was 7 years of age, but children reported by their parents as having more severe ADHD were diagnosed earlier.*

Data from international samples suggest that young people with high levels of attentional difficulties are at greater risk of involvement in a motor vehicle crash, drinking and driving, and traffic violations.*

Adults do not simply outgrow ADHD. Untreated ADHD can have a negative impact on interpersonal relationships, educational and career goals.

More than 1 out of 20 Americans 12 years of age and older reported current depression in 2005–2006.*

Most adults with mental health symptoms (78%) and without mental health symptoms (89%) agreed that treatment can help persons with mental illness lead normal lives.*

Evidence has shown that mental disorders, especially depressive disorders, are strongly related to the occurrence, successful treatment, and course of many chronic diseases including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and obesity and many risk behaviors for chronic disease; such as, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive drinking, and insufficient sleep.*

Mental Health Disorders are often misdiagnosed or not taken seriously enough. Misdiagnosis can result in costly and ineffective treatment which further worsens the outcome. Seeking expert advice early on is important.

*Content source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Nearly 8% of persons aged ≥12 years (6% of males and 10% of females) report current depression. Females have higher rates of depression than males in every age group. Males aged 40–59 years have higher rates of depression (7%) than males aged ≥60 years (5%). Females aged 40–59 years have higher rates of depression (12%) than females aged 12–17 years (8%) and females aged ≥60 years (7%). Psychiatric Evaluations, Therapy, Psychotherapy, Medication Management

Each visit you are evaluated and treated on time and personally (face to face) by a highly qualified and experienced M.D.(Medical Doctor) Psychiatrist for the entire session unlike some practices where you are seen by a nurse practitioner most of the times.

    Understanding your Care is important:

    Choosing the right doctor –

Mental Health Disorders are often misdiagnosed or not taken seriously enough. Misdiagnosis can result in costly and ineffective treatment which further worsens the outcome. It is important that you start treatment with the right doctor and understand your care.

A Psychiatrist is a Medical doctor first.

A therapist or Psychologist may call themselves Doctors but they are not medical doctors since they did not attend medical school. They usually have a Ph.D which is an academic degree and not a medical degree. Therefore they cannot prescribe medications.

A PCP or family doctor is not an expert in mental health since they are not trained in mental health issues as a Psychiatrist is. The psychiatrist attended medical school earning a Medical Degree and then going on to complete a rigorous four year residency in Mental Health typically at a large Hospital’s Psychiatry Department where they receive hands on training working with mental health patients both in an in patient and out patient setting.

A Child Psychiatrist goes through further additional specialized training working with children, teenagers and families in an accredited facility. The child and adolescent psychiatrist uses the knowledge of biological, psychological, and social factors in working with patients. Initially, a comprehensive diagnostic examination is performed to evaluate the current problem with attention to its physical, genetic, developmental, emotional, cognitive, educational, family, peer, and social components. The child and adolescent psychiatrist arrives at a diagnosis and diagnostic formulation which are shared with the patient and family. The child and adolescent psychiatrist then designs a treatment plan which considers all the components and discusses these recommendations with the child or adolescent and family. (Source ACCP)

Articles, Blogs, and Books About Software Development and Computer Programming, including

Note to site visitors: this website is a time machine, left pretty much in the exact state it was in at the end of 2006, when site editor and publisher Daniel Read retired from working on it. Please enjoy the 100% free, ad-free content, most of which is still relevant, as developer.* was always dedicated to the “timeless” aspects of technology and software work. Regretfully, as of this writing, the “Community” side of the site, which featured blogs and article comments, has not be restored after a database corruption occurred in the Drupal MySQL database. (If any Drupal experts out there would not mind helping me get it back online, I would accept the help.) Most if not all of the blog/comment content should still be available in the Wayback Machine. Thank you to everyone who supported or contributed to this site in it’s 2000’s heyday. This one of the first sites of its kind. (We even had a theme song !) Please check out the “About” page for more information about how the site was put together from a technical standpoint. –All the best, Dan. (If anyone would like to get in touch, please find me on LinkedIn.)

Finding commonality among classes makes for effective object-oriented programming. Often, programmers express that commonality using an inheritance hierarchy, since that is one of the first concepts taught in object-oriented programming. We’re going to go to the other extreme in this chapter to explore the difference between using inheritance and using interfaces. An excerpt from Interface Oriented Design.

The key to maintaining a good employment outlook in IT, it seems, is to move out of programming and up into more business-oriented IT positions such as systems analyst, business analyst, project manager, or systems architect. However, a computer programmer can’t just decide to become a systems analyst or project manager overnight.

At a breakfast seminar here June 6 on “Factors for IT Project Success and Failure,” Prof. June Verner of NICTA provided a fascinating mix of surprises and predictables related to her subject topic. The findings came from NICTA’s study of 400 projects in the U.S. Australia, and Chile, using questionnaires and interviews to discuss success and failure factors with practitioners.

When we’re testing any software, we are faced with the tradeoff of cost and benefit of testing. With complex software, the costs of testing can grow faster than the benefits of testing. If we apply techniques like the ones in this article, we can dramatically reduce the cost of testing our software. This is what we mean when we say test smarter, not harder.

Once we realize that we are committed to a future full of testing, it is worth exploring what testing really means. I would assert that there are several flavors of testing, and that all too often when we speak of testing we consider far too few of those flavors. An excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0.

A new installment in the developer.* Systems and Software series, exploring the connections between general systems thinking, cybernetics, and software development. Author Don Gray applies systems thinking principles–including “balancing loops,” symptomatic and systemic solutions, and “shifting the burden”–to a recurring situation with one of his clients.

So what does it mean to be a professional programmer? What does it mean to be a professional anything. Some definitions simply say to be a professional is “to make money from a skill,” but true professionals also have a set of qualities often described as “professionalism.” In my opinion, these qualities are.

In this article I will begin with a discussion of home-grown vs. off-the-shelf persistence solutions, including areas to consider when deciding between the two, and advice for choosing the best off-the-shelf solution to meet your needs. I will also share suggestions and advice from my own experiences with O/R mapping and persistence APIs, with a focus on “best practices.”

These essays by Jack W. Reeves offer three perspectives on a single theme, namely that programming is fundamentally a design activity and that the only final and true representation of “the design” is the source code itself.

I’m well acquainted with such people because I display all their qualities. What we share is an honest dedication to our work–so much dedication that we abuse our own bodies, if necessary, to get the work done.

How important are software design skills to a programmer? The traditional view is that programmers merely implement the designs of other people.

What do you think? Are there fundamental lessons here that software designers and companies should be heeding? Are there some products or manufacturers that got this *right*, who have not experienced difficulties with the great 2007 DST transition? If so, what can we learn from their example?

Recently I had occasion to write a moderately complex component that used “automation” (using the old fashioned COM term) to communicate with the Microsoft Office Excel application installed on the same computer. In this post I share several tips and tricks that may help you in your Excel automation adventures.

ome people have asked us, “You’ve started a book publishing company? Huh? Why would you do that? I thought all the publishers are going out of business.” These articles do a great job of describing why we think there is a future for new publishers to succeed by embracing the change happening right now.

Editor Dan Read belatedly reminisces about the recent passage of the five year anniversary of developer.*, considers where we are today, and speculates on the future.

Edward Yourdon has asked us to comment on Death March projects today. Here is my (somewhat revised) reply sent to him by email because the commenting feature on his blog is not working.

    By Edward G. Nilges

The fallacy of which I am thinking is the attack on knowledge claims by a “skepticism” wielded ignorantly as a rhetorical club. It is characteristically used in business environment by managers on workers.

    By Edward G. Nilges

The latest installments from chrishmorris’s project series.

For some reason they left IsNumeric() and IsDate() functions out of .NET. I end up needing these is almost every non-trivial project. In this post I share C# and VB.NET versions of the functions I use.

I’ve found the BackgroundWorker to be very handy, but a little tricky to start using at first. There are some subtleties I had to overcome that are not covered in the documentation, especially in the area of exception handling.

    How Do I
    Use EstroGel?

    Managing Estrogen Levels After Menopause

Today s women are smart, well informed, and deserve to be the best they can be. And if the symptoms of menopause are negatively affecting your life, you have the choice to address them. Fortunately, there are many treatment options for you and your healthcare provider to consider from lifestyle changes to hormone therapy (HT), including EstroGel 0.06% (estradiol gel).

    • EstroGel is an FDA-approved, bioidentical estrogen therapy (ET) gel, which means the estrogen in EstroGel is similar to the estrogen your body produces naturally. 1,2
    • EstroGel is the only non-patch transdermal estrogen therapy that provides relief of both moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause and moderate to severe vaginal dryness, itching, and burning after menopause. 1
    • EstroGel delivers a consistent, effective dose which helps a woman manage some of her menopausal symptoms more easily, day in and day out.
    • Maybe that is why EstroGel is the #1 prescribed estrogen product in Europe and the #1 prescribed transdermal estrogen product in Canada. 3

Talk with your healthcare provider today about estrogen therapy and if a prescription for EstroGel is right for you.

EstroGel 0.06% is approved by the FDA for use after menopause to reduce moderate to severe hot flashes and to treat moderate to severe menopausal changes in and around the vagina. If you use EstroGel only to treat your menopausal changes in and around your vagina, talk with your healthcare provider about whether a topical vaginal product would be better for you.

    External Promotional Message

    • Do not use estrogen-alone to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes or dementia (decline in brain function).
    • Using estrogen-alone may increase your chances of getting strokes and blood clots.
    • Using estrogen-alone may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older.
    • Do not use estrogens with progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attack, strokes or dementia.
    • Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, or blood clots.
    • Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older.
    • You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with EstroGel.

Do not start using EstroGel if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, currently have or have had certain cancers, had a stroke or heart attack, currently have or have had blood clots, currently have or have had liver problems, have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder, are allergic to EstroGel or any of its ingredients, or think you may be pregnant.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding, have any other medical conditions, are going to have surgery or will be on bed rest, are breastfeeding, and about all the medicines you take.

Serious but less common side effects include heart attack, stroke, blood clots, dementia, breast cancer, cancer of the lining of the uterus (womb), cancer of the ovary, high blood pressure, high blood glucose, gallbladder disease, liver problems, changes in your thyroid hormone levels, and enlargement of benign tumors ( fibroids ).

Irish Girl Names – Irish meanings and origins for baby girls

Irish Girl Names – Meanings and origins of Irish names for girls

DESCRIPTION: eithne means “kernel of a nut or seed” but it may also be related to Aidan meaning “little fire.” There are at least nine St. Eithnes. One 6th century St. Eithne was the mother of St. Columba. Before the birth of her son an angel appeared to her displaying a beautifully colored cloak covered with wonderful flowers. When she reached for the cloak it rose into the air, and spreading out, floated over land and sea until it seemed to rest upon the hills of a distant land. This vision foretold that her little son was to travel over the seas and there win great distinction and honour.

    Eimear. Emer

    PRONOUCE: “ee + mer”

DESCRIPTION: Eimear possessed the “Six Gifts of Womanhood” – “beauty, a gentle voice, sweet words, wisdom, needlework and chastity!” She was bethrothed to the warrior Cuchulainn (read the legend) when they were children and they loved each other very deeply. But Cuchulainn had “a wandering eye” and Eimear endured this, realizing “everything new is fair,” but when he made love to Fand, wife of the sea god Manannan, Eimear confronted the lovers. After seeing the strength of Fand’s love she offered to withdraw. Touched by this display of unselfishness, Fand left Cuchulainn and returned to the sea. When Cuchulainn died Eimear spoke movingly and lovingly at his graveside.

DESCRIPTION: ean means “bird” and suggests “birdlike” or “freedom of spirit.” St. Enda was a sixth-century monk associated with the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. The name is used for boys and girls.

    PRONOUCE: “e + tane”

DESCRIPTION: From et meaning “jealousy.” Etain surpassed all other women of her time in beauty and gentleness and thus was an object of jealousy herself. When the fairy king Midir fell in love with her his wife, Fuamnach, transformed Etain into a scarlet fly that was blown over the ocean for seven years. When she was finally able to return to Ireland she fell into a glass of wine which was drunk by a woman who longed for a child. In this way Etain was reborn and she later married a High King of Ireland.

    PRONOUCE: “fee + ina”

DESCRIPTION: Fionn Mac Cool’s (read the legend) warrior band were known as the Fianna (read the legend). In early Ireland women had equal rights and while the warriors were usually men there is a strong tradition of Celtic women fighting alongside the men, dating as far back as Roman times.

    Fidelma. Fedelma

PRONOUCE: “fid + el + ma”

DESCRIPTION: Meaning “beauty” or “constant.” The name goes back to ancient times and has been held by six saints. One Fidelma, a daughter of the High King Conchobhar Mac Nessa, was known as Fidelma Nichrothach “Fidelma The Nine-Times-Beautiful,” and a warrior of note herself.

    PRONOUCE: “fee + ona”

DESCRIPTION: fionn meaning “fair, white, beautiful” it is the feminine form of Fionn. Of Scottish origin it is quite a popular name in Ireland.

    PRONOUCE: “finn + ula”

DESCRIPTION: The name comes from fionn + ghuala “fair shouldered.” The chieftan King Lir and his wife Aobh had a daughter Fionnoula and three sons Aedh, Conn and Fiachra. When Aodh died Lir’s new wife Aoife was so jealous of her husband’s love for his children that she cast a spell on them and turned them into swans and condemned them to spend 300 years on Lake Daravarragh, 300 years on the Sea of Moyle and 300 years on Innis Glora. However, if they heard a Christian bell in Ireland they would become people again. One morning they were awakened by the sound of a Mass bell. St. Patrick had arrived. The children were brought to him and he baptised them and they have lived on in Irish mythology as the “Children of Lir” (read the legend).

DESCRIPTION: Often refers to a person who is a native Irish speaker or a person who is from Ireland. Medieval legend holds that Gael was the name of the hero from whom the Irish race took its name.

    Gormlaith. Gormla, Gormley

    PRONOUCE: “gorm + lee”

DESCRIPTION: Anglicized as Barbara. May come from gorm “illustrious” or “splendid” and flaith “queen, princess.” Lady Gormlaith, a legendary beauty, was queen of the Danes in Ireland as wife of Olaf, The Viking leader of Dublin; later she was wife of Malachy II, king of Ulster and finally married Brian Boru (read the legend), king of Munster and later king of all Ireland. Her three sons, Sitric, Murdach and Donough continued to rule Ireland after The Battle of Clontarf where Brian Boru died in 1014.

    Grainne. Grania

    PRONOUCE: “graw + nya”

DESCRIPTION: From gran “grain, corn.” Grainne in ancient Ireland was the patron of the harvest. In later legends Grainne was the name of the beautiful daughter of a High King of Ireland, Cormac Mac Art. She had been promised in marriage to the king Fionn Mac Cool (read the legend). When Grainne saw him at the wedding banquet she realised Fionn was too old for her and put a “geis,” a love spell on Fionn’s nephew, Diarmuid. They ran away together but Fionn’s pursuit prevented them from spending two consecutive nights in the same place. Megalithic sites throughout Ireland are still traditionally referred to as “the bed of Grainne and Diarmuid” (read the legend).

PRONOUCE: “graw + nya + wail”

DESCRIPTION: Described as “one of the most remarkable women in Irish history” Granuaile or Grainne Ni Mhaille (ang. as Grace O’Malley) was a renowned sea captain who led a band of 200 sea-raiders from the coast of Galway in the sixteenth century. Twice widowed, twice imprisoned, fighting her enemies both Irish and English for her rights, condemned for piracy, and finally pardoned in London by Queen Elizabeth herself, her fame was celebrated in verse and song and in James Joyce’s “Finnegan’s Wake.” She is often seen as a poetic symbol for Ireland.

    Ide. Ida

    PRONOUCE: “ee + da”

DESCRIPTION: Meaning “thirst” as in “thirst for goodness or knowledge.” St. Ide and St. Brigid are considered the most influential woman saints of early Irish Christianity. Associated with education, Ide founded a monastery in Killeedy in County Limerick where a holy well is dedicated to her. In an earlier legend she was the foster-mother of the infant Jesus.

    PRONOUCE: “i + o + na”

DESCRIPTION: St. Colmcille founded his monastery on Iona, the island between Ireland and Scotland in 563 AD and thus the name is associated with “blessed.”

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

    Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

    LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

    Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

    LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

    Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

    Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

    WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

    Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

How to Find Cheap Flights to London #lastminute #travel

    #find a cheap flight

    Things You’ll Need

Book online, and be specific. While numerous online travel sites, such as Expedia, Hotwire and Travelocity, feature deals on flights to a number of locales (including London), features a section devoted exclusively to booking cheap/discounted flights to London. The site offers a list of airports from which people can fly, as well as numerous times, dates, flight types and prices. A function also exists by which travelers can book hotel and car, in addition to booking their flight.

Hire a travel agent. This can be done in person, through local outlets like a newspaper or the Yellow Pages, as well as through online sites like Tripology. The latter site provides users with travel agents who offer a customizable trip itinerary, including flight packages to locales like London. For those with limited travel booking experience, particularly to an international location like London, travel agents offer a potentially best-case scenario in terms of securing a cheap/discounted flight to the United Kingdom.

Book through British Airways. Booking directly through the most popular airline in the United Kingdom is of great benefit to travelers, as the airline features plenty of flights to London. By booking well in advance–when airlines are looking to sell as many tickets as possible in the hopes of selling out a flight, or at the last minute–when airlines are desperate to sell those last few remaining seats, gives discount ticket seekers the opportunity to score a great deal.

Affordable Options for Your Business Property Insurance

Learn some of the variables that help determine your property insurance rate.

Your business has a lot of physical assets. Your building and its contents. Any outdoor fixtures like signs or fences. Stuff that can be damaged – which means you need to protect it. That’s why commercial property insurance (also referred to as business property insurance) is one of the smartest investments you can make in your business.

While unexpected accidents or events can happen anytime – storms, fires or other major setbacks – with business property insurance, you’ve got support and financial assistance to help you recover quickly.

    How commercial property coverage works

Commercial property insurance coverage varies, but they’re generally classified by the type of event leading to a loss, and by what things are insured.

Basic property insurance usually covers losses caused by fires or explosions, theft, vandalism and damage from vehicles or airplanes. Additional coverage referred to as “endorsements” can be added to provide additional protection for things such as earthquakes and broken glass.

The key items insured in business property insurance include your building, office equipment, inventory and outdoor items on the premises.

    Taking inventory

Before you meet with an agent, you should take an inventory of your business. This helps you determine what property you want to insure, what its replacement value would be and if it’s worth insuring.

The property you might insure could include:

    • The building that houses your business. (If you lease or rent your space and are obligated to insure the building you occupy, there’s coverage for you too)
    • All office equipment, including computers, phone systems and furniture, whether they’re owned or leased
    • Accounting records and important company documents
    • Manufacturing or processing equipment
    • Inventory kept in stock
    • Fence and landscaping
    • Signs and satellite dishes

How do you want things covered?

Commercial property insurance plans pay for losses based on the replacement cost of the item or its actual cash value.

    • Replacement cost (RC) is the amount necessary to repair, replace or rebuild property on the same premises, with comparable materials and quality, without deducting any amount for depreciation.
    • Actual cash value (ACV) is the cost to replace it with new property of similar style and quality, minus depreciation.

Typically, premiums for policies covering property insured on an ACV basis are lower because the limits only include the depreciated value. This amount might not be enough if you elect to insure the property on a RC basis. Your insurance agent can work with you to make sure you have your property adequately insured.

Product, coverage, discounts, insurance terms, definitions, and other descriptions are intended for informational purposes only and do not in any way replace or modify the definitions and information contained in your individual insurance contracts, policies, and/or declaration pages from Nationwide-affiliated underwriting companies, which are controlling. Such products, coverages, terms, and discounts may vary by state and exclusions may apply.

    Alcoholism addiction #alcohlolism, #alcohol #abuse, #alcohol #addiction, #alcohol #dependence, #alcohol #problems,

Substance Abuse and Addiction – Topic Overview

    Is this topic for you?

This topic is about alcohol abuse and dependence in adults. For information about alcohol problems in teens or children, see the topic Teen Alcohol and Drug Abuse .

What are alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence?

Alcohol abuse means having unhealthy or dangerous drinking habits, such as drinking every day or drinking too much at a time. Alcohol abuse can harm your relationships. cause you to miss work, and lead to legal problems such as driving while drunk (intoxicated). When you abuse alcohol, you continue to drink even though you know your drinking is causing problems.

If you continue to abuse alcohol, it can lead to alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence is also called alcoholism. You are physically or mentally addicted to alcohol. You have a strong need, or craving, to drink. You feel like you must drink just to get by.

You might be dependent on alcohol if you have three or more of the following problems in a year:

    • You cannot quit drinking or control how much you drink.
    • You need to drink more to get the same effect.
    • You have withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. These include feeling sick to your stomach. sweating. shakiness, and anxiety .
    • You spend a lot of time drinking and recovering from drinking, or you have given up other activities so you can drink.
    • You have tried to quit drinking or to cut back the amount you drink but haven’t been able to.
    • You continue to drink even though it harms your relationships and causes physical problems.

Alcoholism is a long-term (chronic) disease. It’s not a weakness or a lack of willpower. Like many other diseases, it has a course that can be predicted, has known symptoms, and is influenced by your genes and your life situation.

How much drinking is too much?

Alcohol is part of many people’s lives and may have a place in cultural and family traditions. It can sometimes be hard to know when you begin to drink too much.

You are at risk of drinking too much and should talk to your doctor if you are: 1

    • A woman who has more than 3 drinks at one time or more than 7 drinks a week. A standard drink is 1 can of beer, 1 glass of wine, or 1 mixed drink.
    • A man who has more than 4 drinks at one time or more than 14 drinks a week.

Interactive Tool: Do You Have a Drinking Problem?

What are some signs of alcohol abuse or dependence?

Certain behaviors may mean that you’re having trouble with alcohol. These include:

    • Drinking in the morning, often being drunk for long periods of time, or drinking alone.
    • Changing what you drink, such as switching from beer to wine because you think it will help you drink less or keep you from getting drunk.
    • Feeling guilty after drinking.
    • Making excuses for your drinking or doing things to hide your drinking, such as buying alcohol at different stores.
    • Not remembering what you did while you were drinking (blackouts).
    • Worrying that you won’t get enough alcohol for an evening or weekend.

    How are alcohol problems diagnosed?

Alcohol problems may be diagnosed at a routine doctor visit or when you see your doctor for another problem. If a partner or friend thinks you have an alcohol problem, he or she may urge you to see your doctor.

Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and past health, and he or she will do a physical exam and sometimes a mental health assessment. The mental health assessment checks to see whether you may have a mental health problem, such as depression .

Your doctor also may ask questions or do tests to look for health problems linked to alcohol, such as cirrhosis .

    How are they treated?

Treatment depends on how bad your alcohol problem is. Some people are able to cut back to a moderate level of drinking with help from a counselor. People who are addicted to alcohol may need medical treatment and may need to stay in a hospital or treatment center.

Your doctor may decide you need detoxification. or detox, before you start treatment. You need detox when you are physically addicted to alcohol. When you go through detox, you may need medicine to help with withdrawal symptoms.

After detox, you focus on staying alcohol-free, or sober. Most people receive some type of therapy, such as group counseling. You also may need medicine to help you stay sober.

When you are sober, you’ve taken the first step toward recovery. To gain full recovery, you need to take steps to improve other areas of your life, such as learning to deal with work and family. This makes it easier to stay sober.

You will likely need support to stay sober and in recovery. This can include counseling and support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. Recovery is a long-term process, not something you can achieve in a few weeks.

Treatment doesn’t focus on alcohol use alone. It addresses other parts of your life, like your relationships. work, medical problems, and living situation. Treatment and recovery support you in making positive changes so you can live without alcohol.

What can you do if you or another person has a problem with alcohol?

If you feel you have an alcohol problem, get help. Even if you are successful in other areas of your life, visit a doctor or go to a self-help group. The earlier you get help, the easier it will be to cut back or quit.

Helping someone with an alcohol problem is hard. If you’re covering for the person, you need to stop. For example, don’t make excuses for the person when he or she misses work.

You may be able to help by talking to the person about what his or her drinking does to you and others. Talk to the person in private, when the person is not using drugs or alcohol and when you are both calm. If the person agrees to get help, call for an appointment right away. Don’t wait.

They offer great deals on insurance; they provide free online quotes for members and non-members alike. To do this, visit the USAA website and click on “Products and Services,” then “Insurance” and choose “Auto Insurance” from the drop-down menu. You can find the “Get a Quote” feature on this page.

    Step 2: Contact the AFI
The AFI, or Armed Forces Insurance, is another major source of auto insurance for military personnel. The “Quote and Compare” feature, which you can find on the front page of their website will give you instant military car insurance quotes which you may use to compare.

    Step 3: Contact Other Providers
Although the USAA is the number one source of military car insurance, other providers may offer military car insurance discounts as well.
Free Online Quotations search engine goes through a complete database of military car insurance companies. Let FIQ’s search engine check the rates of other providers, helping you find cheap military auto insurance is our number one goal. When searching, specify that you are or were a member of the military, contact the insurance providers by phone to inquire about available military car insurance discounts.

    Step 4: Compare Rates
After our search, you should have a fairly substantial list of military auto insurance quotes. All things being equal, it should be simple to pick out the best deal for you: just look for the lowest rates.

    Step 5: Get Insured
Once FIQ’s military insurance quotes have found you the best policy, contact them through their website or phone. A company representative will be able assist you through the process of getting military car insurance to cover your vehicle. In order to expedite the process, make sure you have any relevant information already on hand, like your driver’s license, car’s VIN, and social security number.

If you are deployed and need storage for your vehicle, ask you insurance company about their policies. Auto insurance for military personnel should have considerations for deployed personnel. You may need auto insurance during your deployment. It would be a good idea to speak to your military auto insurance agent about the procedures for storing your vehicle and driving in a foreign country.

FIQ specializes in helping you how to get military auto insurance and the best rates possible. Besides the standard questions, there are certain things that you should share when you shop around for military discount car insurance:

    • Your driving record.
    • Your vehicle’s safety record.
    • How often you use the car (especially if you do not drive your car to work).
    • Home ownership.
    • Smoking status.
    • Where you keep the car.

A number of insurance companies offer cheap military car insurance. Discounts apply to young drivers and those who are veterans too, and often to those who are spouses or adult children of those in a branch of the services.

Discounts are available for military personnel because they and their families are considered a special case scenario. Because of deployment and frequent moving around, military personnel and their families would be penalized and charged higher rates if they had no special provisions.

In the past, when deployed overseas, military personnel often chose to discontinue their coverage. This became an unwelcomed gap to car insurance companies, and they lost their military car insurance discount as a result. Now, companies usually give a waiver to a member of the armed forces, letting them maintain their discount.

    Emergency Deployment Discount

The department of defense considers some areas of the world to be extremely dangerous. If you are being deployed in that area, and have your vehicle stored in an approved storage facility, you are eligible for the emergency deployment discount.

Check with your insurer to see if they offer this discount. Some insurers offer other military discounts to members of professional military associations, such as the AFSA, AUSA, etc. Again, check with the insurance company to learn the exact details.

    Comparison Shopping:

FIQ’s search engine will find you the cheapest military car insurance quotes. When searching for Military car insurance companies, start with a company you have insured with in the past. Be sure to tell them of your active duty, retired or reserve status, and inquire about all the possible discounts for which you may be eligible. After receiving the first quote, don’t stop there. With FIQ, the work is done for you. We will check with several competitors. We are the experts on where to get military car insurance quotes.

Thankfully, there are a few companies that specialize in military auto insurance discounts and all of them have extensive experience in this field.

USAA, the United Services Automobile Association, specializes in services for the military, including cheap military car insurance. If you remain accident-free for 5 years, your premium won’t rise if you have one just accident.

They’re very alert to military needs, and can arrange premium payments according to your pay schedule.

USAA is one of the leading companies for working with military personnel in the US, and very flexible to needs and changing situations, including deployment to danger pay zones.

GEICO is one of best companies for dealing with military personnel. The company offers a 15 percent discount to everyone on active duty, as well as to retired military personnel and active or retired National Guard members. This can lead to great savings.

GEICO also offers cheap auto insurance for the military sent into danger pay areas. These emergency deployment discounts apply to anyone deployed to these zones, and are in effect as long as your vehicle is stored under one of the company-approved storage protection plans.

They have a dedicated Military Assistance Team, made up of former service personnel. Whatever branch of the service you were in, even the National Guard, you qualify for the discounted military car insurance. There are payment plans available, and a 24-hour helpline for those who need it.

    Armed Forces Insurance

Working with Progressive, Armed Forces Insurance offers insurance in 10 states, and also offers cheap car insurance for the military in another 28 states. They have most of the country covered.

Armed Forces Insurance is a member-owned and non-profit organization, setting it apart from other insurance companies. Members have access to the company 24 hours a day via the Web, which helps if you are stationed remotely. You do need to have the paperwork to prove you are serving, or were honorably discharged, and then you may qualify for a discount. Membership of AFI can include spouses, children, and also widows.

When deployed, military car insurance is probably the last thing a member of the military wants to think about. You have yourself and your family to consider first and foremost, but unfortunately, these matters must be dealt with. Many insurance companies offer discounts for military personnel, but make sure you will not be penalized for discontinuing coverage while you are deployed. There are many respectable insurance companies who appreciate what you do for your country. Let FIQ ease this difficult time by finding you the cheapest military car insurance quotes on the internet.

    Jordan Holidays

    Handy Information

    Population – 6.3 million

    Currency – Jordanian dinar

    Capital – Amman

    Time Difference – GMT + 2 hours

Average flight time from London – 5 hours

    Language – Arabic

    Religion – Islam

    Telephone – International Dial – 00 1 876

    When To Go

Jordan boasts a wonderful Mediterranean climate, offering great conditions for a visiting throughout the year. However, it can be argued that the best times to visit Jordan are between March and May or September and November, when temperatures are not at their highest but there is still minimal rainfall and fantastic conditions for whatever you may choose to do during your stay in Jordan.

The summer months of July and August can see high temperatures well into the 30s, particularly in the drier areas such as the Jordan Valley and Wadi Rum. Festivals are frequently staged at this time, a very popular time for tourists to visit. Furthermore, many of Jordan’s main tourist attractions only operate around the summer months.

Winter on the other hand can be very cold, with Amman occasionally seeing snow. The deserts are particularly cold, especially at night time. if you do visit Jordan during winter it is advisable to bring plenty of warm layers.

The month of Ramadan is a tricky time for visitors as you shouldn’t eat, drink or smoke in public during the day, although visiting during Eid al-Fitr, the large celebration at the end of Ramadan, is recommended as a great time to visit.

    What To See

Above all else Jordan is famed for its historical attractions. Petra is a stunning city, one of the wonders of the world, carved into the rock face more than 2000 years ago. Visiting Petra is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

However, Petra is not the only historical attraction in Jordan. Visitors can explore the ruins of ancient Roman cities, Crusader castles and desert citadels. People can also venture to the mountain top from which Moses viewed the Promised Land.

On top of the traditional attractions of Jordan, visitors can also enjoy a fantastic array of activities including water sports and diving in the Red Sea’s crystal clear waters at Aqaba.

Adventure tourism is also growing increasingly popular in Jordan. Visitors can retrace the steps of Emperor Hadrian in four wheel drive vehicles from north to south, or go on fantastic camel and donkey treks through Jordan’s eastern deserts and central highlands just as Lawrence of Arabia did hundreds of years ago. The wild red desert of Wadi Rum can also be explored by the adventurous among us.

For other places with the same name, see Jordan (disambiguation) .

Jordan (الأردنّ al-Urdunn ) is a country in the Middle East that is almost land-locked save for a small 28km outlet on the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba and a frontage on the Dead Sea ). It’s bordered by Israel and the West Bank (Palestinian Territories ) to the west, by Syria to the north, by Iraq to the east and by Saudi Arabia to the south.

    Understand Edit

For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King Hussein (1953-99). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers of the US, USSR and UK, various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel. King Abdullah II – the eldest son of King Hussein and Princess Muna – assumed the throne following his father’s death in February 1999. Since then, he has consolidated his power and established his domestic priorities, including an aggressive economic reform program. Jordan acceded to the World Trade Organization in January 2000, and signed free trade agreements with the United States in 2000, and with the European Free Trade Association in 2001. There is no hostility between Muslims and Christians, and Jordan is one of the friendliest, most modern and liberal nations in the region yet, at the same time, it has maintained an authentic feel of being in the heart of the Middle East.

Jordanian culture is fairly homogeneous, but you will probably notice a fairly distinct social difference between the Bedouin areas, particularly in the South and urban West Ammanites, for example.

    Kaveri River

Kaveri River , Kaveri also spelled Cauvery. Kaveri River Vanniar sacred river of southern India. It rises on Brahmagiri Hill of the Western Ghats in southwestern Karnataka state, flows in a southeasterly direction for 475 miles (765 km) through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. and descends the Eastern Ghats in a series of great falls.

Before emptying into the Bay of Bengal south of Cuddalore. Tamil Nadu. the river breaks into a large number of distributaries forming a wide delta called the “garden of southern India.” Known to devout Hindus as Daksina Ganga (“Ganges of the South”), the Kaveri River is celebrated for its scenery and sanctity in Tamil literature, and its entire course is considered holy ground. The river is also important for its irrigation canal projects.

Its uppermost course is tortuous, with a rocky bed and high banks under luxuriant vegetation. After passing through a narrow gorge and tumbling about 60 to 80 feet (18 to 24 metres) in the rapids of Chunchankatte, the river widens about 900 to 1,200 feet (275 to 365 metres) across the Karnataka Plateau. There its flow is interrupted by a number of anicuts or weirs. At the Krishnaraja Sagara, the Kaveri is joined by two tributaries, the Hemavati and Lakshmantirtha, and dammed for irrigation, forming a 12-square-mile (31-square-km) reservoir.

In Karnataka the river bifurcates twice, forming the sacred islands of Srirangapatnam and Sivasamudram, 50 miles (80 km) apart. Around Sivasamudram are the scenic Sivasamudram Falls, comprising two series of rapids, Bhar Chukki and Gagana Chukki, plunging a total of 320 feet (100 metres) and reaching a width of 1,000 feet (300 metres) in the rainy season. The falls supply hydroelectric power to Mysuru (Mysore), Bengaluru (Bangalore), and the Kolar Gold Fields. more than 100 miles (160 km) away.

Upon entering Tamil Nadu, the Kaveri continues through a series of twisted wild gorges until it reaches Hogenakal Falls and flows through a straight, narrow gorge near Salem. There the Mettur Dam, 5,300 feet (1,620 metres) long and 176 feet (54 metres) high, impounds a lake (Stanley Reservoir) of 60 square miles (155 square km). The Mettur Project, completed in 1934, created an important agricultural and industrial area by improving irrigation and providing hydropower.

After sweeping past a historic rock at Tiruchchirappalli. the Kaveri breaks at Srirangam Island. a major pilgrimage centre. There, in eastern Tamil Nadu state, its braided and extensively irrigated deltaic region of about 4,000 square miles (10,360 square km) begins. A dam called the Grand Anicut was built in the 2nd century at the point where the river divides. A second dam (1836–38) across the Kollidam (Coleroon) River. the Kaveri’s northern and larger channel, saved the old system from silting and extended irrigation. The open roadsteads of Nagappattinam and Karikal are on the seaward side of the delta. The Kaveri’s main tributaries are the Kabani (Kabbani), Amaravati, Noyil, and Bhavani rivers.

    Can you retire on 1 #retire #young

Can you retire on 1.5 million?

If you ve reached this page asking yourself if you can retire on 1.5 Million Dollars, and you happen to live in the US, or, realistically, any country of the world, let me answer this question right away: the answer is yes, most likely.

Many people reach this site asking themselves if they have enough money to retire. The truth is, the answer depends a lot on your own situation, and your spending habits. However, there s some significant data that indicates that 1.5 million is more than enough to retire.

Retire on 1.5 million, a definite possibility, according to data

Not so long ago, I wrote an article entitled If you have more than a million dollars, you can probably retire already . That article was based on a survey on popular financial blog Mr Money Mustache . At the time, the survey had received 160 answers. Today, with approximately 100 more answers (256 total answers at the time of this writing), I can confirm that 1 million dollars + a house is in general enough for the majority of people to retire.

1.5 million is, at this point, almost a guarantee you re ready to pull the plug: at the time of this writing, more than 60% of the respondents had 1.5 Million dollars or less when they decided to retire early.

The vast majority of the respondents live in the US, a country that I believe is more expensive than many other places in the world. Bottom line is, if you have enough money to retire in the US, you probably have enough money to retire everywhere else in the world as well.

How to retire early on 1.5 million

There s no magic trick involved in retiring early. You just need to understand how much you spend every year and multiply that number by 25 (that s the famous 4% rule ) to understand how big your investment money needs to be. 1.5 million dollars lets you live on $60 000 a year (and that number will be adjusted with inflation). That s more than the median US income. If your number is bigger than 1.5 million, depending on your situation there are lots of things you can do to reduce your yearly expenses. without impacting your lifestyle.

If you don t have 1.5 million yet, you can of course ask yourself how to reach that number. In all cases, the key to early retirement is a combination of reducing your expenses and making more money.

    • The first thing you have to do is discuss your plans with your significant other. and get them on board
    • Secondly, you should track your expenses, have a budget, understand where you spend your money each month. Many financial bloggers recommend the free tools from personal capital to track all your accounts.
    • Start cutting on the big money tickets, strive to save a larger share of your take-home money every month (some details here )
    • Put the money you save in indexed funds or ETFs. Worry-free (long term) investments with an average of 7% return is where you want to go. Despite popular belief, the stock market (+bonds) is where this happens. Follow the boggleheads philosophy. Track your portfolio performance with a centralized tool. Some people do it on a google spreadsheet, here again others recommend the free services from personal capital .
    • (optional but a great accelerator) look for ways to generate side income

I can remember when the common thought was that if you could only get to a million in net worth, you are rich! Of course, inflation took a toll on that number. Maybe 1.5 million is the new number.

What is interesting with the survey is that 40% had 1.5 million or more when they decided to retire. It demonstrates that our “enoughness” is a sliding scale. As I am typing this, I am in the 40% group, but not retired….almost there!

    StockBeard August 19, 2015 at 10:58 pm

I m a little bit jealous Bryan! I d totally retire today if I had 1.5 million, and I don t even own a house. If I owned a house, I computed that I could retire with 1.2M

People have retired on half that it s definitely doable if your lifestyle and expenses are in check. My wife and I, for example, plan on retiring next year with around $800,000 in net worth, and we are doing so by living cheaply. We ve come to realize that we just don t want or need a lot of stuff. Spending $60k a year would be a HUGE increase over what we re planning on spending if you remove the mortgage, we re spending around $35k a year now and we won t have a mortgage once we retire.

I honestly don t know what we d spend it all on if we had $1.5m.

    StockBeard August 20, 2015 at 7:50 pm

Steve, I m amazed at how much I seem to align with you. I ll probably be a couple years behind, but in general I think my expenses are close to what you guys have. The difference in my case ( and it adds up quickly) is that we don t have a house yet (and given the housing prices in Japan where we plan to move back ultimately we re talking of a 35 years mortgage in general), and we have 2 kids.

My wife and I, the 2 of us, used to live on $35K a year, 7 years ago. So $800 000 would be just about right. Kids mean a bigger house and additional costs (I m worried about education costs, we made a few bad choices related to that some insurance/fund that I ll have to live with)

Great post. I think it is definitely possible to retire with 1.5mil. I plan to leave my professional job at the age of 31 early next year to pursue the jewelry making full time. Though it may cut down on how much we will have for retirement, we are looking for a slower pace lifestyle. Mrs. Budgets wants to retire after she pays off her student loans which is 9-10 years from now. We are hoping we will have +1mil in retirement by then though we don t plan to retire in the US. We will probably spend most of early retirement in Mexico and stay with family when we are in the US. We shall see!

    StockBeard August 27, 2015 at 4:16 pm

Congrats, 1 million by 31 is extremely good in my opinion! And +1 for geographic arbitrage, being able to choose where you live based on costs and personal preference is a great advantage you have over the majority of people. I myself plan to move back to Japan (my wife is from there), where life can be cheaper than in the US.

Clarification..that was actually +1mil by the time my WIFE retires which would be in 9-10 years from now. Haha..I wish it were the case that I be nearing 1mil at this age. Almost the weekend..Have a good one!

That s actually my target number. I live in the NYC area so it is expensive but mainly housing. Many early FI ers seem to pay off their mortgage before taking the plunge I m not sure if I can pull that off. Renting seems a little unpredictable too as rents rise yearly and sometimes it jumps significantly. We rented for 5 years before purchasing a co-op.

I suppose if you managed to stumble upon $1.5M at a young age (maybe your 20 s) then it might not be enough to allow you to retire. But, yes, that amount of money can last a long time if managed wisely.

    Jordan – Lonely Planet #travel #safe

    #jordan travel

    Introducing Jordan

A safe haven in a region of conflict, Jordan has delighted visitors for centuries with its world heritage sites, friendly towns and inspiring desert landscapes.

    Ancient Allure

Jordan has a tradition of welcoming visitors: camel caravans plied the legendary King’s Highway transporting frankincense in exchange for spices and Nabataean tradesmen, Roman legionnaires, Muslim armies and zealous Crusaders all passed through the land, leaving behind impressive monuments. These monuments, including Roman amphitheatres, crusader castles and Christian mosaics, have fascinated subsequent travellers in search of antiquity and the origins of faith. The tradition of hospitality to visitors remains to this day.

    Desert Landscapes

Take a ride through Wadi Rum at sunset and it’s easy to see why T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was so drawn to this land of weathered sandstone and reddened dunes. But Jordan’s desert landscapes are not confined to the southeast: they encompass a salt sea at the lowest point on earth, canyons flowing with seasonal water, oases of palm trees and explosions of springtime flowers scattered across arid hills. Minimal planning and only a modest budget is required for an adventure.

    Why I Love Jordan

    By Jenny Walker, Writer

From the first ‘ahlan wa sahlan’ said in welcome, I knew that Jordan was to become a lifelong friend. After going in search of T E Lawrence as a student, I have returned many times to the low-slung tents of the Howeitat, sipped tea with rug-makers and walked in the wake of shepherds. Beautiful though it is, and blessed with a disproportionate number of wonders, Jordan inspires this loyalty primarily because of its spirit of generous optimism – opening its arms to strangers and sharing its meagre wealth with neighbours in need.

    One of the World’s Wonders

Petra, the ancient Nabataean city locked in the heart of Jordan’s sandstone escarpments, is the jewel in the crown of the country’s many antiquities. Ever since Burckhardt brought news of the pink-hued necropolis back to Europe in the 19th century, the walk through the Siq to the Treasury (Petra’s defining monument) has impressed even the most jaded of visitors. It is worth allowing at least two days to make the most of a visit, particularly as the sites are far flung, best seen in early morning and late afternoon, and require a fair amount of walking.

A Taste of the Middle East

It takes tolerance to host endless waves of incomers and Jordan has displayed that virtue amply, absorbing in recent times thousands of refugees from Palestine. Iraq and most recently Syria. Despite contending with this and with ever-growing numbers of tourists who are often insensitive to conservative Jordanian values, rural life in particular has managed to keep continuity with the traditions of the past. While Jordan faces the challenges of modernisation and growing urbanisation, it remains one of the safest countries in which to gain an impression of the Middle East.

In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 – triggering America’s entry into World War II – and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. To be updated

Western travellers have been exploring the Middle East for well over a century, but Jordan is a relative newcomer to tourism, welcoming only a fraction of the numbers who visit neighbouring Egypt and Israel. Its popular image abroad encompasses not much more than camels and deserts, yet this is a country of mountains, beaches, castles and ancient churches, with an urbane people and a rich culture. It is safe, comfortable and welcoming – and by far the region’s most rewarding destination.

Jordan is about 85 percent desert. but this one plain word covers a multitude of scenes, from the dramatic red sands and towering cliffs of the far south to the vast stony plains of volcanic basalt in the east. The northern hills, rich with olive trees, teeter over the rift of the Jordan Valley. which in turn runs down to the Dead Sea. the lowest point on earth. The centre of the country is carpeted with tranquil fields of wheat, cut through by expansive canyons and bordered by arid, craggy mountains. At Jordan’s southernmost tip, beaches fringe the warm waters of the Red Sea. which harbours some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world.

Jordan is part of the land bridge linking Europe, Africa and Asia, and has seen countless armies come and go. Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Christian Crusaders and more have left evidence of their conquests, and there are literally thousands of archeological sites from all periods in every corner of the country. In addition, Israel and Palestine, Jordan’s neighbours to the west, have no monopoly on biblical history. it was in Jordan that Lot sought refuge from the fire and brimstone of the Lord; Moses, Aaron and John the Baptist all died in Jordan; and Jesus was almost certainly baptized here. Even the Prophet Muhammad passed through.

And yet the country is far from being stuck in the past. Amman is a thoroughly modern Arab capital, and poverty is the exception rather than the rule. The government, under head of state King Abdullah II. manages to be simultaneously pro-Western, pro-Arab, founded on a bedrock of Muslim authority and committed to peace with Israel. Women are better integrated into positions of power in government and business than almost anywhere else in the Middle East. Jordanians are also exceptionally highly educated: just over 2.5 percent of the total population is enrolled at university, a proportion comparable to the UK. Traditions of hospitality are ingrained, and taking up some of the many invitations you’ll get to tea or a meal will expose you to an outlook among local people that is often as cosmopolitan and world-aware as anything at home. Domestic extremism is virtually non-existent.

Most people take great pride in their ancestry, whether they’re present or former desert-dwellers (bedouin ) or from a settled farming tradition (fellahin ). Across the desert areas, people still live and work on their tribal lands, whether together in villages or apart in individual family units. Many town-dwellers, including substantial numbers of Ammanis, also claim tribal identity. Belonging to a tribe (an honour conferred by birth) means respecting the authority of a communal leader, or sheikh, and living in a culture of shared history, values and principles that often crosses national boundaries. Notions of honour and mutual defence are strong. Tribes also wield a great deal of institutional power: most members of Jordan’s lower house of parliament are elected for their tribal, rather than political, affiliation. The king, as sheikh of sheikhs. commands heartfelt loyalty among many people and respect among most of the rest.

National identity is a thorny issue in Jordan, which has taken in huge numbers of Palestinian refugees since the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948. Many people from tribes resident east of the River Jordan before 1948 resent this overbalancing of the country’s demography, as well as the fact that Palestinians, having developed an urbanized, entrepreneurial culture, dominate private-sector business. For their part, Jordanians of Palestinian origin – by some estimates comprising more than sixty percent of the population – often resent the “East Bank ” Jordanians’ grip on power in government and the public sector. All are Jordanian citizens, but citizenship tends to mean less to many of Palestinian origin than their national identity, and less to many East Bankers than their tribal affiliation. Recent influxes of refugees from Iraq and Syria, plus large numbers of long-stay guest workers from Egypt, muddy the issue still further. “Where are you from?” – a simple enough question in many countries – is in Jordan the cue for a life story.

This is the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of doing business with.  After being a long time customer of both Jetsetter and Giltgroup, they have now lost all of my respect and business.

I purchased a hotel reservation from Jetsetter a few days ago, and when I received confirmation, I realized that I had accidentally entered in the wrong date (or their system screwed it up. can t be sure).  I called them right back to fix the problem (this is less than 24 hours after the purchase).  When I speak with them, I am informed that my purchase is not refundable and that they can t change the dates.  Of course I am very upset by this information and request to speak with a manager.  Not surprisingly, the manager is busy and can t take my call, but would be happy to call me back later.  At this point, I am very stressed, as we had already booked our flight, and need to get our vacation figured out immediately.  I let them know this, and they assure me I will get a call back that day.  Stupidly, I believed them.

The next day when I had still not received a call back, I called them again.  They gave me the same information as before, and said that the manager was busy again.  All the while the people I spoke with at this company were rude and disrespectful to me.  I let them know that if I don t get the situation resolved immediately, I will cancel the charges.  This got their attention, and they let me know that they would see what they can do.  A few hours later, I get an email letting me know that I can change the dates of my trip, but can t get a refund of the extra day that I had accidentally booked.

This is still not good enough for me, and I am in the process of canceling the charges with my credit card company.  Apparently, Jetsetter has never learned that the customer is always right.  All they had to do was make a small change to my trip, and everything would have been fine.  Now I have lost many hours of my valuable time in dealing with this, and they have lost a customer.  Hopefully the Yelp community will be reading this as well, and also not patronize this horrible company.

    Northern Virginia Dental Hygienists Association #dental #hygienist, #american #dental #hygienists’ #association,

So at first I was going to just use this quote:

Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression By saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.

But anyone who knows me knows I am not so silent.

Many of you have seen me for years at meetings, but may not know me. I am a native Californian, a mother of two amazing children, an adventurist, nature lover, volunteer, and best of all a hygienist that gets to be your President.

This year holds promise for our association, however without each one of our members we are nothing. It has been a sad turn of events, watching the decline in memberships, and attendance of our meetings. We have so many strong, intelligent, caring, and positive hygienists in our component. It is my hope to create new excitement in our CEs with Wine, dine and Learn CEs, and hope to see more of you attend. With the creation of so many privately profiting CEs that are being offered, the association is struggling. There are many interesting courses being offered outside of the association and it is our goal to have similar CEs available to you. Many don’t know that the money from our local NVDHA CE courses goes directly to our association and no one is profiting from them, we are 100% volunteer driven and the money from these courses allows us to contribute and donate to our local Northern Virginia Dental Clinics in Loudon and Fairfax, the VDHA foundation, and ADHA Institute for oral health. We need each and everyone of you to please help our component continue in this mission.

I am so proud to get to be a part of such a passionate group of hygienists, and hope we can all continue on this journey to help others and keep our association going strong.

The best partnerships aren’t dependent on a mere common goal but on a shared path of equality, desire, and no small amount of passion.

    With Sincere Gratitude,

Kent State University president responds to Michigan Republican s abhorrent tweet:

Kent State University president responds to Michigan Republican’s ‘abhorrent’ tweet: Ohio Politics Roundup

Updated on February 6, 2017 at 10:05 AM Posted on February 6, 2017 at 6:20 AM

Kent State leader outlines college’s rebranding effort Agency to help craft new, bolder image

Kent State University President Beverly Warren responded to a tweet from an obscure Michigan County GOP official over the weekend. (Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer)

The Internet has a way of bringing people together in ways you’d never expect. Over the weekend, Kent State University President Beverly Warren had occasion to forcefully respond to what she deemed “abhorrent” statements from an obscure Michigan Republican Party official. Read more in today’s Ohio Politics Roundup, brought to you today by Andrew J. Tobias.

The backstory: On Thursday, Marquette County Republican Party secretary Dan Adamini fired off a couple social media posts, according to MLive’s Benjamin Raven :

One of them, posted to Twitter: “Violent protesters who shut down free speech? Time for another Kent State perhaps. One bullet stops a lot of thuggery.”

The posts attracted media and social media attention after they caught the attention of the Michigan Democratic Party. As a quick reminder, four KSU students were killed and nine wounded on May 4, 1970 after an Ohio National Guard unit opened fire on an anti-Vietnam War protest.

Where’s Marquette County? It’s in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Lake Superior. It has 67,000 people, and is home to Northern Michigan University and the Superior Dome. allegedly the world’s largest wooden dome.

Kent State responds: “ This is an abhorrent and painful use of our tragedy and has no place in healing the divide in America. We will respond,” Warren wrote on Twitter on Saturday morning .

This is an abhorrent and painful use of our tragedy and has no place in healing the divide in America. We will respond

In a subsequent statement, the university said Adamini’s post “is in poor taste and trivializes a loss of life that still pains the Kent State community today.”

Adamini responds: After deleting the posts, he posted on Twitter: “Taking a lot of heat for a very poorly worded tweet yesterday. Sorry folks, the intent was to try to stop the violence, not encourage more.”

Cleveland Clinic doctor still in limbo: “A Sudanese Cleveland Clinic doctor is still not able to return to the U.S. even though a federal appeals court has continued a temporary restraining order against the Trump administration’s travel ban,” writes’s Jane Morice.

That’s because Dr. Suha Abushamma, a 26-year-old internal medicine resident at the Clinic who is a Sudanese citizen, surrendered her work visa while she was detained at a New York City airport while trying to return from Saudi Arabia.

Abushamma has sued, saying she was coerced into signing the forms.

For your radar: Abushamma’s case could end up being the center of a broad challenge to Trump’s immigration order, writes the New York Times’ Adam Alan Feuer .

Have you Herd? Ohio Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown have recommended a new U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio,’s Eric Heisig writes .

The man of the hour is Justin Herdman, a 41 year-old partner at the Jones Day law firm, U.S. Air Force judge’s advocate, and former assistant U.S. attorney.

Herdman would replace current U.S. Attorney Carole Rendon, who was appointed by President Barack Obama.

The upshot? “One could set the stage for a potential end to Richard Cordray’s job as the top consumer-finance cop. Although that outcome is not certain, the White House did not rule it or any other changes out.”

Cordray, a former Ohio attorney general, is on the A-list of potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates in 2018. He is barred from engaging in politics while holding his role as director of the U.S. Consumer Protection Financial Bureau. However, if Trump were to successfully can him, Cordray would be free to return to the Ohio political scene (and as’s Henry J. Gomez previously has written, he would have a potentially potent campaign story to tell .)

Immigration protests: Hundreds of people marched through downtown Cleveland on Friday in opposition to Trump’s executive order,’s Courntey Astolfi writes

“The protest began at 4 p.m. in Ohio City’s Market Square and made its way across the Detroit-Superior Bridge. Marchers stopped at the Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse before reaching their final destination of Cleveland City Hall, where organizers spoke out against Trump’s immigration order and called for Cleveland to become a sanctuary city.”

Hope this helps: Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s budget includes a consolation prize for public transit agencies that stand to lose a significant amount of funding as a result of a change in how the state will tax managed care organizations administering Medicaid plans,’s Jackie Borchardt writes .

One agency, Greater Cleveland RTA will get $20 million to help cope, part of an overall $207 million state package for transit agencies affected by the change.

Kirt Conrad, president of the Ohio Public Transit Association, said the one-time aid is helpful but transit authorities were facing budget crunches before the tax was eliminated.

DeVos might have little impact on Ohio education policy: “ Despite all the furor over Betsy DeVos. Trump’s nominee to be U.S. secretary of education, she might make less of a difference for Ohio schools than you think,” writes The Plain Dealer’s Patrick O’Donnell .

That’s because Ohio already embraces charter schools, for which DeVos is a major advocate.

O’Donnell quotes State Rep. Andrew Brenner, a top Ohio Republican on education issues: “”I can see her pushing even more power back to the states,” Brenner said.”

Husted works the rubber-chicken circuit: Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted spoke to the Canton Rotary Club on Friday. The Canton Repository’s Robert Wang has all the juicy details.

Predictably, Husted would not rule out that he’s running for governor in 2018.

“The election for governor is well over 18 months away. But I am very interested in serving the people of Ohio. And I will announce those plans sometime in the future,” Husted said.
