Mysterious carving 2: The Astronaut.

Salamanca has two cathedrals, the old and the new. The Old Cathedral was built in the 12 th century in the Romanesque style and it is dedicated to Saint Mary of the See. It is closed to the public and only opened during very special occasions. You can get a glimpse of it when visiting the New Cathedral’s permanent exhibition: Ieronimus.

The New Cathedral is not exactly “new”. It was built between the 16 th and 18 th centuries in the Gothic and Baroque styles, commissioned by Ferdinand V of Castile of Spain, the Catholic King.

Cone travel

For some time there were numerous debates online about the fact that one of the carvings is decidedly an astronaut. There were no astronauts back in the 18 th century, so what the…

The Astronaut is hidden in the carvings of the lateral entrance of the cathedral. Can you find it here?

Cone travel

Lateral door, New Cathedral.

How about a close up so that you can find it easier?

Cone travel

Cute, huh? But how and why did it get there? Let’s move on to the next mystery carving.

Mysterious carving 3: The Ice-Cream Eating Gargoyle.

That’s right, to make it even more mysterious, there’s a gargoyle clearly eating an ice-cream cone and kind of laughing at you, very close to the astronaut.

Here’s that picture again, can you spot it?

Cone travel

Find the gargoyle on Salamanca s New Cathedral side door! Click to enlarge.

How about a close up?

Cone travel

Salamanca Cathedral, Ice-Cream Eating Gargoyle.

Neat, huh? It turns out both the astronaut and the gargoyle are details added by the craftsmen in charge of doing some restoration work on the Cathedral in 1992. It seems it’s a regular practice of these workers to “sign” their works with some interesting details. Jerónimo García, chief restorer chose the astronaut as a symbol of the 20 th century and it s said that the gargoyle represents the students.

Can you spot the astronaut and the gargoyle now?

Cone travel

There they are! Click to enlarge.

Salamanca has a lot to offer and I’ll make sure I speak more about it in future posts. The “hidden” carving are some of those neat and intriguing factoids to amuse tourists that you sometimes find in your travels.

Salamanca can be explored on foot

When planning a trip to Salamanca, remember that downtown is gorgeous and not too big. You can walk from one place to another easily.

The University of Salamanca is quite near the Cathedral, as it shows in the map below.

From Plaza Mayor (the main square in Salamanca, as it’s the Spanish tradition, point A on the map marks one of the entrances to the Plaza) walking to the University of Salamanca (point B on the map) is a short five minute stroll.

Find the statue of Fray Luis de León and in front of it, the façade. Look for the frog and then walk two more minutes to find the Cathedral (point C on the map), though walk a little bit more towards Colegio de Anaya, to find the lateral door where the astronaut and the gargoyle are.

Have you been to Salamanca before? Did you find the frog? Did it bring you luck?

Did you know about the astronaut before, or did you miss it on your last visit?

Tell us about your experience in the comments field!

And if you enjoyed this post, click on the buttons below to share it! I’d very much appreciate it!

Sharing is caring!

[ ] On Sunday morning Natalia had to leave us, so Em and I dropped her off at the bus station and headed to lunch. We ended up finding Shwarma Queen, which to some might not sound that great, but once again, coming from Úbeda, we were in heaven! We just about swallowed our lunch whole and then headed to do a bit more sightseeing before we would need to go home the next morning. Our first stop for Sunday was the facade of the University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1134. It is the oldest founded university in Spain and the third oldest European university in continuous operations. Our real reason for visiting the facade of the university was to find the frog. What frog you ask? Well, I ll tell you. There is a frog perched on the top of a skull carved into the already extremely ornate facade of the university. It is said that the students must find the frog or they will not be able to graduate and these days tourists visit to find the frog for good luck. For more information on some of the mysterious carvings of Salamanca, take a look at this site. [ ]

Moses Cone Memorial Park, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, cone travel.#Cone

Moses Cone Memorial Park

Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, near Blowing Rock, North Carolina on the Blue Ridge Parkway, preserves the country estate of Moses Cone, a prosperous textile entrepreneur, conservationist, and philanthropist of the Gilded Age. Its centerpiece is Flat Top Manor, a gleaming white 20-room, 13,000 square foot mansion built in 1901 in the grand Colonial Revival style.

The Manor is now the home of the Parkway Craft Center, one of five shops of the Southern Highland Craft Guild which features handmade crafts by hundreds of regional artists. Throughout the season, local artists demonstrate crafts such as quilting, embroidery, weaving, pottery, glass-blowing, and woodcarving on the front porch of the Manor.

Twenty-five miles of carriage trails wind through the fields and forests of the 3,500-acre estate. The trails are available to horse drawn carriages, horseback riding, and hiking. The Craftsman’s Trail is a 20-minute loop walk around the Manor which the Cones are said to have walked together every morning. The estate also contains a family cemetery and a carriage and apple barn.

Moses Cone’s interest in nature and conservation led him to plant extensive white pine forests and hemlock hedges (at the advice of friend and noted conservationist Gifford Pinchot), build several lakes stocked with bass and trout, and plant a 10,000-tree apple orchard.

Best Travel Pillow Reviews 2017: Memory Foam, Inflatable, Neck Support, inflatable

The Best Travel Pillow Reviews 2017 Memory Foam, Inflatable Neck, or Buckwheat

Posted by Raymond Walsh – January 26, 2017 | Category: Loot

Inflatable travel pillow Inflatable travel pillow

Hunting for the best travel pillow in 2017 was not something I’d thought would keep me up at night, but here I am, lurking in airport shops, scouring the internet, reading endless travel pillow reviews. All the while comparing weight and size and price, and weighing the merits of memory foam vs. inflatable vs. microbeads vs. buckwheat (yes, apparently buckwheat travel pillows are a thing) and whatever else manufacturers can stuff into them.

And aesthetics. Let’s not forget aesthetics. No one wants to look like a dork sleeping on an airplane in front of 300 strangers — because we all know how judge-y strangers on a plane can be. I think I spent less time researching which car to buy than I did researching travel neck pillows.

    Inflatable travel pillow

You see, I used to be one of those folks that rolled my eyes at people who would roll up to the airport with a travel pillow. Since I’m a window seat devotee, rolling up a sweater or hoodie and sticking it between my head and the airplane cabin was good enough for me. And on long-haul flights they actually GIVE you a pillow. Bonus. Who needs to bring their own travel pillow, I thought. I didn’t see what the fuss was about.

But about 8 years ago I was in a car accident, and ever since then my neck is a lot more crotchety — if I sleep on it the wrong way, or twist it out of place, it’s chiropractor and massage and headaches for days. They say to never mock a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes (that s how the saying goes right?) Well, all those years of my eye-rolling “judginess” at travel neck pillows came back to haunt me.

So you see, I’m now a fan of a solid travel neck support pillow to ensure I’m not going to have endless neck pain at the end of a long-haul flight. Even doctors recommend a travel pillow to help you sleep better on a plane.

The thing is, there are SO MANY travel pillows on the market today. There are ones that claim to be the best travel pillow for neck pain, and the best travel pillow for sleeping. They can be U-shaped or traditional or orthopedic or even sometimes like something out of science fiction. And of course there’s the standard blow-up travel pillow (AKA the Poor Man’s Sleep Aid.)

    Table of Contents

A few years ago I was sent the J-Pillow Travel Pillow (which is reviewed below) and kinda fell in love with it. Well almost, it had two disadvantages, but I’ll get into that later. I left my beloved J-Pillow behind by accident in an apartment rental in Portugal, so when I got to Australia I figured I’d better start looking for a replacement. The local supermarket had some cheap microbead travel pillows on sale for only 5 bucks, and I figured, well, for 5 bucks you can’t go wrong.

Well it appears that you can.

I snagged the pillow trying to cut the price tag off, and microbeads flowed free and fast. A Niagara Falls of microbeads all over the living room floor. So that’s why I won’t be recommending microbead travel pillows anytime soon. But I m always on the hunt for that elusive best neck pillow.

Which brings me back to my current predicament. What exactly is the best travel pillow?

Choosing the Best Travel Pillow for You

The question shouldn’t be “What is the best travel pillow?” but rather “What is the best travel pillow for YOU?” Our bodies are designed differently, so what might be the best airplane pillow for me might be something completely different for you.

I have neck pain if I sit still for too long, so I need a travel pillow with good neck support. You may need something a little softer with more cushioning.

Something else to consider is the size of the travel pillow. Do you want to carry it around with you when you reach your destination? Inflatable travel pillows take up a lot less space, but may not offer the support you need. Memory foam travel pillows mould into the shape of your head and neck, but tend to be a lot more bulky. If space is a concern, this is definitely a consideration.

4 Easy Ways to Find Velocity (with Pictures), velocity travel.#Velocity #travel

    How to Calculate Velocity

Velocity is an object’s speed in a particular direction. Mathematically, velocity is often described as the change in position over the change in time. This fundamental concept shows up in many basic physics problems. Which formula you use depends on what you know about the object, so read carefully to make sure you’ve chosen the right one.

    Quick Formulas Edit

    • Average velocity = v a v = x f − x i t f − t i <\displaystyle v_=<\frac -x_>-t_>>>
      • x f = <\displaystyle x_=> final position x i = <\displaystyle x_=> initial position
      • t f = <\displaystyle t_=> final time t i = <\displaystyle t_=> initial time
    • Average velocity if acceleration is constant = v a v = v i + v f 2 <\displaystyle v_=<\frac +v_><2>>>
      • v i = <\displaystyle v_=> initial velocity v f = <\displaystyle v_=> final velocity
    • Average velocity if acceleration is zero and constant = v a v = x t <\displaystyle v_=<\frac >>
    • Final velocity = v f = v i + a t <\displaystyle v_=v_+at>
      • a = acceleration t = time

4 Ways to Find Initial Velocity, velocity travel.#Velocity #travel

    How to Find Initial Velocity

Velocity is a function of time and defined by both a magnitude and a direction. [1] Often in physics problems, you will need to calculate the initial velocity (speed and direction) at which an object in question began to travel. There are multiple equations that can be used to determine initial velocity. Using the information given in a problem, you can determine the proper equation to use and easily answer your question.

Medical Travel Insurance – Over 5, 000 Medical Conditions Covered, medical

    Medical Travel Insurance from Insurancewith

It can be difficult to travel abroad with a medical condition and dependent on your health, you’ll likely need to consider transport, accommodation and in particular the region or climate you’ll be travelling to. With that said, why make securing insurance for your holiday more difficult than it needs to be?

Insurancewith was first created after founder, Fiona Macrae, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. After treatment, Fiona was astonished at how difficult it was to find travel insurance for a holiday she desperately needed. Fiona knew there was an opportunity to help people get sensibly priced cover – whether they had a form of cancer or any another medical condition.

As such, with Insurancewith you can take advantage of the following benefits:

    • Award winning travel insurance
    • Hundreds of medical conditions covered
    • Bespoke medical screening
    • 24/7 emergency medical helpline
    • Discounts for couples, families and single parent families
    • Kids go FREE on our family policies
    • 14 day cooling off period
    • And much more

Other insurance companies may pigeon-hole patients into a set bracket, depending on the medical condition. However, at Insurancewith we take each customer on a case-by-case basis. This means we’re able to offer fair and affordable premiums for everyone looking for travel insurance with a medical condition.

We regularly help patients with all manner of conditions, from potentially terminal illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, to the more manageable conditions including diabetes and asthma.

If you’re looking to arrange travel insurance with a medical condition, speak to Insurancewith today. We’d love to help you arrange the perfect cover, so get a quote online and find out how much you will save.

“Thank you so much for your tremendous service”

    “Our trip was problem free”

    Medical Travel Insurance FAQs

You know travel insurance is a necessity to enjoy your holiday stress and hassle-free, but do you know all the facts? Take a look at some of our frequently asked questions, and don’t forget to get in touch if you have any other pressing issues or concerns.

Why do you need travel insurance?

It’s wise to arrange travel insurance whether you have a medical condition or not. This gives you the peace of mind that if something goes wrong, you won’t have to fork out thousands of pounds to cover excessive medical costs.

And it’s not just the medical expenses themselves which are covered. For instance, the cost of flights home and the cancellation of your hotel reservations are also taken into account. These prices can quickly escalate, so make sure you’re fully insured to avoid problems later down the line.

What is a medical screening and why do I need one?

Medical screenings are carried out by our team of trained professionals, to ensure you receive a personalised quote based on our own assessment. This can help you save quite a bit of money on the policy. You can fill out our online form, or carry out the screening over the phone if this would be easier.

Can I buy travel insurance online?

Yes, you can. You don’t have to call us if you don’t want to, and can complete the online form from the comfort of your own home. Simply answer the questions honestly and to the best of your knowledge – you can always speak to your GP or medical practice if necessary to get a little extra information.

Will I be covered for any pre-existing medical conditions?

At Insurancewith we try to accommodate to every medical condition and provide a personal quote based on your situation. In fact, our policies are created by people who have experienced the same conditions that we cover.

Of course, sometimes it’s a little more difficult to arrange cover, but we’ll do our best and work with you to ensure a policy that’s fair and accurately reflects your condition.

I already have travel insurance, but have since been diagnosed with a medical condition. What now?

If you decide to cancel the trip after being diagnosed with a new medical condition, you’ll need to provide evidence from your doctor stating you’re not fit to travel. You should then be covered under the cancellation clause of your contract.

However, if you decide to go ahead with the trip as planned, things do get a little more complicated. You should remember, we will not be able to pay any claims when anyone has travelled:

    • Against the advice of a doctor
    • If they know they’ll need treatment while on the holiday
    • If their condition is terminal (unless it has been declared to us and we have accepted)
    • If they are awaiting test results from the hospital

If you travel under any of the circumstances above, your insurance may become void if you need to make a claim.

Can I have a policy if I have a terminal condition?

Yes, Insurancewith will consider offering cover for any terminal condition. You will need to go through the online quote process or give us a call to allow us to assess your individual situation in order for us to provide you with a policy.

What happens if I cancel my trip due to bad health?

As we briefly mentioned above, if you can provide evidence from your doctor that you’re unfit to take a trip (and provided you are cancelling either because of an existing condition that you have told us about, or the onset of something that was sudden and unforeseen), you shouldn’t suffer financially. If you have proof, you’ll be covered for the cancellation and should receive most of the money back.

    Why choose Insurancewith?

At Insurancewith, many of our policies are created by people with medical conditions they’ve found notoriously difficult to get cover for. As such, we’ve tried to address the issues they found when attempting to take out travel insurance.

We understand that travelling can be more stressful and overwhelming than usual for those with a medical condition. However, by planning ahead you can minimise the chance of things not going to plan.

    • Consider your needs and requirements for every stage of the holiday – from before you go, to your journey, accommodation, medication, transport and journey home. You can then organise extra help and assistance if necessary.
    • Always discuss any travel plans with your GP or consultant before you book, as they can advise you on treatment plans, emergencies and any vaccinations you might need.
    • If you’re currently receiving treatment or have started taking a new medication before you leave, it’s worth speaking to your GP for clarification.
    • Make sure you research the local medical facilities. Even though some countries may be visually beautiful, their medical facilities could leave a lot to be desired. Ensure there’s a hospital nearby and it’s able to deal with your condition should a serious emergency arise.

For more information on arranging travel insurance with a medical condition, get your quote today from the Insurancewith team. You can call us today on 0203 829 3875.

However, at Insurancewith we treat you as a individual and ask relevant questions to get an accurate assessment of your unique situation.

Everybody is looking for cheap flights when they travel. Here are a few tips to help you find those great travel deals!

      • Book as far in advance as possible. There will be more seats and flights available at the lowest prices. As flights fill up, these low-cost seats are no longer available. You’ll get a great deal, and you won’t need to settle for connecting flights at inconvenient times to find cheap flights!
      • If you are not able to book in advance, being flexible will help you find the cheapest flights. Travel in the middle of the week (generally Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) if possible. Not only will you find the cheapest airfares on mid-week travel, but airports are often less busy. Be prepared to take a connecting flight with a change of planes to get a lower airfare.
      • Take advantage of the services of FlyForLess.ca. With just a single search, we’ll automatically compare airline seat sales, wholesale consolidator airfares, charter flights, and special web fares, and show them side-by-side to help you quickly find your cheap flights.

How to Travel by Train from Los Angeles to San Francisco:

How to Travel by Train from Los Angeles to San Francisco

California has researched a plan to create a high speed “bullet” train from Los Angeles (LA) to San Francisco by the year 2030. This route would ideally get a train passenger from 1 end of California to the other in only 2 hours and 40 minutes. For now, however, a train ride from LA to San Francisco is a leisurely experience on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight, providing a scenic trip along the Pacific coast of the United States. The route is the only train that travels nearly the whole length of the west coast, 1,377 miles (2,216 km), from Seattle to Los Angeles and back. The name was taken from 2 former Southern Pacific train names, the Coast Daylight and the Starlight. Now, it departs daily. This article will tell you how to travel by train from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Strategies for Finding the Lowest Airfare to Hawaii – Go Visit

Strategies for Finding the Lowest Airfare to Hawaii

How to get the cheapest airfare

How to get the cheapest airfare

One of the most predictably unpredictable expenses of traveling to Hawaii is the cost of airfare. It s also one of the more expensive factors in your Hawaii vacation budget.

Fares fluctuate so often that it’s difficult to know when to purchase tickets. Finding the absolute lowest airfare is a mix of luck, knowledge and skill. In the absence of an exact science, we have make use of the available tools and make some calculated guesses. Here are some strategies to help you make a sound decision on when to purchase your flights to Hawaii.

    Use Flight Search Engine Alerts

To make the best decision on when to buy flights to Hawaii, you need to make an informed decision. The best way to start getting helpful information is to sign up for the free email alerts from flight search engines. What s a flight search engine? Flight search engines monitor fares for all the major airlines.

The sooner you start to watch fares the better, but ideally start at least around five or six months before your desired trip. (If you ve already passed that mark, start where you are. It s not too late.) You ll quickly start to learn low fares from high fares.

My favorite fare email alert system that I reference almost daily is Airfarewatchdog.com. I have found numerous fare sales for my route to Hawaii via Airfarewatchdog.com s fare emails.

For a quick and easy search to determine the lowest available fare for your routes, I like using the Flexible Dates tab at CheapAir.com. (Note that if you purchase your flights via CheapAir.com and the fares drop, you may be entitled to credit up to $100 towards a future flight purchase. It s a little bit of fare reduction insurance, so to speak. We ve actually used that feature and did get credit. You are responsible for monitoring drops. This feature is subject to change, but here s a link to the policy that s active as of February 2016.

If you have the option, get the updates daily. Yeah, it’s going to stuff your inbox, but fares can fluctuate daily, so it’s best to be in the know on a daily basis, especially if you are anxious to book.

When you are setting up your alerts, if you are headed to the Big Island, Kauai, and/or Maui, I recommend that you also check airfare to Oahu. Hawaii’s major airline hub is in Oahu’s Honolulu Airport (HNL), so that majority of flights from the mainland go in and out of Honolulu. (Maui s OGG is emerging as Hawaii s secondary hub.) On top of that, the vast majority of inter-island flights connect or originate in Honolulu. Let’s say you are going to Kauai, it’s possible that you could save some money by flying into Honolulu first and getting an inter-island flight from there. So, consider all your options by pricing out each scenario. (See my guide to inter-island travel in Hawaii.)

If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can get better deals. Use the flight search engine s flexible search feature to find the cheapest days to travel. You can really save some big bucks by being flexible.

Another way to be flexible is to consider flying from alternate airports. For example, Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is my preferred airport. If I found a fare that’s low enough, I’d be willing to drive to Charlotte (CLT) or Greensboro (GSO) for the savings. So, set alerts up for nearby airports.

Fly to Hawaii when demand is down making flights (and accommodations) cheaper

The best time to visit Hawaii is when the crowds are down and so are the prices. With the exception of holidays, April, May, September and October are the best months to travel to Hawaii. See our post on the best time to go to Hawaii for see other low demand times.

If you are trying to get the lowest airfare to Hawaii, don t plan your vacation around a holiday. That s when demand is high and the airlines don t discount. If you must go over a holiday, experts recommend flying on the holiday itself to get the cheapest fare.

Weekend travel to and from Hawaii is in highest demand and therefore more expensive. If you can travel weekday to weekday, you tend to get lower fares and the flight may not be as full.

    Best Time to Buy

A study by CheapAir.com indicates that the average prime booking window is between 21 and 112 days of your departure. They ve created a customizable booking window predictor for your particular route.

In this ABC News article , one of the top airfare gurus, Rick Seaney, says,

“Typically, airlines start actively managing their cheapest seats about four months before departure….Don t buy too early; tickets purchased before this four month window will generally be priced at a midtier level. An exception: shopping for busy holiday times (Thanksgiving, Christmas); due to current price hikes and ever-increasing fuel surcharges, you may want to purchase these tickets earlier than usual, to lock in the price.”

Hopper is a free app that monitors and predicts airfare for your particular route. It s supposed to tell you when you should buy your tickets. You can learn more here.

If you are having a difficult time deciding on when to purchase your airline tickets, one trick we use is to go directly to the airline s website and view available seats for the specific flights and dates we want. If the plane looks full, it s unlikely that fares will be discounted. If there are lots of available seats, there s a descent chance that fares may be coming down.

When you come across a deal, snag it. Aim to make that purchase as quickly as possible as it could be gone the next day or even the next hour. I’ve experienced “purchase paralysis” and lost deals. I still remember a brief fare war a couple of years ago. I could have flown from Charlotte to Honolulu for around $250 round-trip, but I took too long trying to decide what to do, that I lost the chance to get that super low rate.

    Beware of Sneaky Snake Advertising

When you see exceptionally low airfare, be sure to read the fine print before you get excited. Airlines will try to hook you in with a fly to Hawaii for $379. At first, that sounds great, but what they don’t tell you is that the fare is one-way based on round-trip travel and taxes and fees are an additional charge. So the flights to Hawaii that you thought were $379 are going to end up costing over $800 – not exactly the deal you were expecting from the glitzy ad.

All flights to Hawaii are not created equal, so know what you’re getting when you book. Andy and I will often choose a slightly more expensive fare because it offers less stops, shorter overall travel time, and a bigger plane. We fly from RDU and most of the cheapest fares have us going through Dallas to Los Angeles to Hawaii. We much prefer to cut out the Los Angeles stop, fly in the larger planes, and save time. So, spend a little time educating yourself on the shortest routes and aircraft sizes to suit your preference. SeatGuru.com can be a useful resource when choosing planes and seats.

If you ve checked airfare, then checked again later at the same website and the price has suddenly jumped up, clear the cookies from your computer and check again.

I wish you the best of luck in finding the lowest cost airfare to Hawaii!
