Swahili being the most popular language besides English and all the different tribal dialects, one might like to get more details about this language. It is always appreciated if there is a little effort and interest to interact with the locals in their own language.

General Kenya Facts

Location: Kenya lies across the equator on the East coast of Africa. It borders Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan to the North, Uganda to the West, Tanzania to the South and the Indian Ocean to the East.

Area : Covers an area of 225,000 sq miles (582,646 sq km). Approx the size of Texas State, USA

Administrative Divisions: 8 Provinces including the Nairobi area. Provinces are: Central, Coast, Eastern, North, Rift Valley, Western and North Eastern. These provinces are divided into administrative areas known as Districts.

Climate: Pleasant and favorable with plenty of sunshine all year round. Rainfall is sometimes heavy around April to May while some areas are more cloudy though without much rain around July/August.

Population : Estimated at 41,070,934 million (July 2011 est.)

Religion : 40% Protestant, 30% Roman Catholic, 6% Muslim, 23% other religious believes.

Capital City: Nairobi – population approximately 3,4 million (2009)

Major Towns : Mombasa – 966,000 million (2009) Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret.

National Language : Kiswahili. Other 42 ethnic languages are also spoken in Kenya.

Official Language : English

Independence Day : December 12, 1963 (Jamhuri Day) – Independence from British colonial rule.

Kenyatta Day* – 20 October

Update from Oct 2010: After the new constitution, Kenyatta day was replaced by Hero’s (Mashujaa) Day in an effort to honor & celebrate all men and women who fought for Kenya’s freedom.

Any holiday falling on a Sunday becomes a public holiday the following Monday.

Politics and Government : Democratic Government with Political Pluralism. The President is the Head of State and Government. The Constitution is the supreme law of the State. It establishes and determines the composition, powers and duties of the main organs of government namely the executive, the legislature and the judiciary.
