From hotel deals to vacation rentals and more, how to surf the web for top holiday bargains

How many websites attempt to help you make the right choice among travel products? The answer is: tens of thousands. But as I prepare for my own vacation trips, or respond to inquiries from friends, relatives or readers, I find myself returning again and again to just 10 of that mammoth array. They are set forth below:

I have deliberately excluded websites prepared by me or with which I am associated – like Frommers.com, my own daily blog or my daughter’s daily blog. My favourites include:

1 For finding hotel rooms in the U.S. Getaroom.com. Though only a fraction of the size of its larger rivals (it accesses hotels in more than 200 cities, but concentrates on bargains in the 57 most heavily visited ones), GetARoom claims to supply unique room rates, and actually encourages you to phone them for even better unpublished rates.

2 For finding hotel rooms in Europe: Venere.com. From its headquarters in Rome, Venere accesses more than 50,000 hotels all over the world, but does best – and offers special bargain rates – in European cities, for which you should primarily use it.

3 For finding low-cost overnights in private homes worldwide: Airbnb.com. After only three years in existence, this San Francisco outfit is handling tens of thousands of bookings in private apartments and homes all over the world. Usually, the owner remains in residence while you occupy a guest bed or room.

4 For snaring a free overnight in the home or apartment of gracious, generous people worldwide: Couchsurfing.org. It reveals an awesome number of people who will put you up as a free guest. A runner-up in this field: GlobalFreeLoaders.com.

5 For vacation homes or rental apartments: VRBO.com. Its initials standing for “vacation rental by owner,” it eliminates the middleman, puts you in direct touch with the landlord, but therefore requires that you carefully check references. If you do, you’ll often obtain remarkable values for your next vacation stay.

6 For unbeatable airfares both here and overseas: Momondo.com. This Danish-based “aggregator” of flights, operated by a handful of people aided by what apparently is a remarkable computer program, has frequently provided me with airfare bargains that no other website revealed.

7 For sharp discounts on your next cruise: Vacationstogo.com. Though more than a dozen cruise brokers compete for your business (CruisesOnly.com, iCruise.com, OnlineVacationCenter.com, CruiseCompete.com, TravelThemesAndDreams.com and many more), this one presents its offerings in such clear, understandable fashion as to win my vote.

8 For discounted prices on your next auto rental: Autoslash.com. In addition to revealing low rates, it also draws your attention to special coupon offers that can reduce your costs even more. It’s in heavy competition with the longer-established BreezeNet.com, which also should be consulted.

9 For lower-cost shore excursions on your next cruise: Shoretrips.com. In addition to offering lower rates in nearly every major port at which the big cruise ships stop, it also places you in

12-passenger vans instead of the 45-passenger motorcoaches used by the cruise lines themselves.

PowerShell Script To Create A Converged Fabric For Clustered Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Host

Posted on May 31, 2012 by AFinn in Hyper-V // 12 Comments

Note: This post was originally written using the Windows Server 8 (aka 2012) Beta. The PowerShell cmdlets have changed in the Release Candidate and this code has been corrected to suit it.

After the posts of the last few weeks, I thought I’d share a script that I am using to build a converged fabric hosts in the lab. Some notes:

  1. You have installed Windows Server 2012 on the machine.
  2. You are either on the console or using something like iLO/DRAC to get KVM access.
  3. All NICs on the host will be used for the converged fabric. You can tweak this.
  4. This will not create a virtual NIC in the management OS (parent partition or host OS).
  5. You will make a different copy of the script for each host in the cluster to change the IPs.
  6. You could strip out all but the Host-Parent NIC to create converged fabric for standalone host with 2 or 4 * 1 GbE NICs

And finally …. MSFT has not published best practices yet. This is still a beta release. Please verify that you are following best practices before you use this script.

OK…. here we go. Watch out for the line breaks if you copy paste:

write-host Creating virtual switch with QoS enabled
New-VMSwitch ConvergedNetSwitch -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdapterName ConvergedNetTeam -AllowManagementOS 0

write-host Setting default QoS policy
Set-VMSwitch ConvergedNetSwitch -DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight 10

write-host Creating virtual NICs for the management OS
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Parent -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Parent -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Cluster -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-Cluster -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-LiveMigration -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-LiveMigration -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI1 -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI1 -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10

#Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI2 -SwitchName ConvergedNetSwitch
#Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name Host-iSCSI2 -MinimumBandwidthWeight 15

write-host Waiting 30 seconds for virtual devices to initialise
Start-Sleep -s 30

write-host Configuring IPv4 addresses for the management OS virtual NICs
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Parent) -IPAddress 192.168.1.51 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.1.1
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Parent) -ServerAddresses 192.168.1.40

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-Cluster) -IPAddress 172.16.1.1 -PrefixLength 24

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-LiveMigration) -IPAddress 172.16.2.1 -PrefixLength 24

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-iSCSI1) -IPAddress 10.0.1.55 -PrefixLength 24

#New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias vEthernet (Host-iSCSI2) -IPAddress 10.0.1.56 -PrefixLength 24

That will set up the following architecture:

QoS is set up as follows:

  • The default (unspecified links) is 10% minimum
  • Parent: 10%
  • Cluster: 10%
  • Live Migration: 20%

My lab has a single VLAN network. In production, you should have VLANs and trunk the physical switch ports. Then (I believe), you’ll need to add a line for each virtual NIC in the management OS (host) to specify the right VLAN (I ve not tested this line yet on the RC release of WS2012 watch out for teh VMNetowrkAdaptername parameter):

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVLAN –ManagementOS –VMNetworkAdapterName vEthernet (Host-Parent) –Trunk –AllowedVLANList 101

Now you have all the cluster connections you need, with NIC teaming, using maybe 2 * 10 GbE, 4 * 1 GbE, or maybe even 4 * 10 GbE if you’re lucky.

Please follow and like us:

This works in Windows 8, I assume Server 2012 as well:

add-vmnetworkadapter -managementOS -name Storage -SwitchName New Virtual Switch
get-vmnetworkadapter -managementos -name Storage | set-vmnetworkadaptervlan -access -vlanid 213

Trunk commands do require the NativeVlanID and AllowedVlanIDList as well.

If i have two 10G Broadcom NICs on my server, can I team the two NICs using WS2012 native NIC teaming and create virtual switches to use for Management, Cluster, VM traffic and also for ISCSI traffic.
ISCSI only for VM in-guest clustering.
Can I create ISCSI virtual NICs on teamed physical NICs. Do Microsoft best practices allow this?

I ve discussed this plenty on my blog. There s a search option on the top right.

Tried to deploy described scenario in my lab and some time later VMM 2012 SP1 crashed all those dreams in one click I suppose ConvergedFabric scenario are not supported one by VMM only I ve done is Allow host access using VLAN: 0 checkbox cleared (Host properties – Virtual Switches – ConvergetNetSwitch). Then VMM killed all vNICs created in PoSh and left host on it s own without connections.

VMM network deployment is incompatible with any networking you deploy directly on a host. It will overwrite it, and likely break VM connectivity. You have to choose one or the other.

is this for outgoing traffic only or does this work for incoming too?
if so do you have to configure switches to get most out of this?

Outgoing. You can tag packets for the switches to apply QoS too.

Just wondering what switch independent teaming would be used in this scenario, seeing as VMs (usually Hyper-V Port) would also be connected?

I ve a team of two physical nics with three virtual nics presented to the OS. The associated physical switch ports are trunked. I ve tried a couple of variations of the set-vmnetworkadaptervlan cmdlet, but unable to communicate with the virtual nics. On each host, I can ping the relevant IP addresses for each virtual nic, but cannot ping beyond the host. Any suggestions welcome.

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –ManagementOS –VMNetworkAdapterName Management –Access –VlanId 151

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVLAN -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName Management -Trunk -NativeVlanId 151 -AllowedVlanIdList 151

New York s DWI Guide #nys #dwi, #nyc #dui, #dwai #drugs,

#

What is the difference between the terms DWI, DWAI, DWI, OUI, etc.

These terms are all acronyms that refer to the crime commonly known as drunk driving. Different states have different names for the crime. For example, in Oregon, the term driving under the influence of an intoxicant or DUII is used; Massachusetts and Maine call the charge operating under the influence or OUI; Florida, Connecticut and numerous other states use the term driving under the influence or DUI.

Like many states, New York State law uses the terms driving while intoxicated(DWI) and aggravated driving while intoxicated (Aggravated DWI). New York also has a separate charge known as driving while ability impaired or DWAI. [Colorado is the only other state that uses the term DWAI.] More on those terms below.

I just got arrested for a State of New York DWI / DWAI charge. What happens now?

ISSUE ONE: The New York Implied Consent Proceeding: Your New York drivers license (or your right to drive in New York if you re not a New York licensed driver) was most likely revoked for a year or more if you refused a chemical (breath) test. You also face a $500 civil penalty. Read your paperwork carefully. It may be in your interest to challenge this revocation at a DMV hearing. Speak to your New York DWI hearing for more information.

ISSUE TWO: The New York Aggravated DWI / DWI / DWAI Case: Separate from the implied consent license revocation proceeding is the charge for DWAI, DWI, or Aggravated DWI. You were probably charged with one of the following offenses:

Driving while ability impaired (DWAI). Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while your ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by the consumption of alcohol. This offense is most commonly seen when a driver s BAC is between 0.05 and 0.07 percent.

Driving while intoxicated; per se (Per Se DWI). Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while you have 0.08 percent or more by weight of alcohol in your blood as shown by chemical analysis of your blood, breath, urine or saliva.

Aggravated driving while intoxicated; per se (Aggravated DWI). Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while you have 0.18 percent or more by weight of alcohol in your blood as shown by chemical analysis of your blood, breath, urine or saliva.

Aggravated driving while intoxicated; child in car (Aggravated DWI). Under New York law it is unlawful to driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age in your vehicle.

Driving while intoxicated (DWI). Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while in an intoxicated condition.

Driving while ability impaired by drugs. Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while your ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by the use of a drug.

Driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs or of alcohol and any drug or drugs. Under New York law, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while your ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by the combined influence of drugs or of alcohol and any drug or drugs.

Important: The implied consent proceeding and the criminal DWI / DWAI case are completely separate from one another.

Will my New York drivers license be revoked / suspended?

RELATED TO ISSUE ONE ABOVE: Your New York drivers license (or your right to drive in New York state if you do not have a valid New York license) may be revoked under implied consent law for refusing a chemical test. New York s implied consent law does not suspend or revoke a driver s license if they fail a breath or blood test (though many other states do so).

RELATED TO ISSUE TWO ABOVE: If you are convicted of the DWI or Aggravated DWI charge. you will also lose your license (or your right to drive in New York if you don t have a valid New York license) for a six months or more.

A DWAI conviction will also result in a suspension or revocation of your license.

Keep in mind that these conviction-based revocations are separate and distinct from the implied consent revocation. Talk to your NY DWI lawyer for possible suspension and revocation lengths for your situation.

Also keep in mind that your license can be suspended or revoked for a variety of reasons unrelated to a DWI / DWAI arrest e.g. excessive tickets, a hit and run conviction, etc.

What happens if I get caught driving while my license is suspended / revoked?

Aggravated unlicensed operation (AUO) of a motor vehicle should be avoided as it is a new crime. Most commonly, you ll face the charge of aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree. This charge is common after an alcohol related suspension / revocation. Penalties include fines and possible jail time.

If you re on probation for a DWI / DWAI when you are arrested for unlicensed operation, you also face a probation violation hearing.

If you re driving while intoxicated and driving after a revocation, you may face a charge of AUO in the first degree. This is a felony charge.

I really need to drive. Will I be able to get a NY restricted / occupational / conditional permit / conditional / hardship license?

If you’re serving a revocation, for a first DWI / DWAI conviction and you participate in the Drinking Driver Program (DDP), you may be able to obtain a conditional license. If you receive a New York conditional license, it is valid to drive only:

  • to and from work;
  • on the job (if driving is part of your job);
  • to and from a class at an accredited school, college, or university;
  • to transport your child to and from child care or school if necessary to maintain your employment;
  • to and from Drinking Driver Program classes and required evaluation or treatment;
  • to and from a state or county motor vehicle office for business related to your conditional license;
  • to and from court required probation activities;
  • to and from medical treatment for you or a family member;
  • during an additional three hour period each week .

The State of New York does not issue conditional licenses to drive commercial motor vehicles.

What is the New York State Drinking Driver Program (DDP)?

The Drinking Driver Program (DDP) is a government program designed to reduce recidivism among persons convicted of DWI. During the introductory phase of the program, participants discuss the social, medical, legal, and driver safety problems caused by alcohol and other drug abuse. The program includes classroom education, screening, and sometimes evaluation and treatment.

A DDP participant must attend seven weekly classroom sessions. Each session lasts two to three hours. If you satisfactorily complete the classroom sessions, your involvement in the DDP ends unless the program refers you for a formal evaluation and subsequent treatment. This referral may result from:

  • the results of a written self assessment;
  • two or more alcohol or drug-related driving convictions within the past 10 years;
  • an arrest for an alcohol or drug-related driving offense while enrolled in the DDP;
  • attending class under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • a request by the student for help with a substance abuse problem, or an admission that the student is currently in treatment;

If you are referred for evaluation, you may choose a treatment provider from a list supplied by the DDP. [Note: If you are not satisfied with the results of the evaluation, you may contact the DDP director and request a second evaluation. However, you must accept the findings of the second evaluation.]

After the evaluation, you may be required to complete a substance abuse treatment program. If you fail to complete required evaluation and treatment, you will be dropped from the DDP and your conditional license will be revoked.

You will receive a Notice of Completion when you have completed all the requirements of the DDP. A copy of your completion notice will be sent to the NYS DMV. Depending on your license status and driving record, your license will be restored or you will be eligible to apply for a new drivers license.

Is a DWI offense in New York a misdemeanor or felony offense?

In New York state, a DWI is usually a misdemeanor crime. However, if you have a prior DWI offense in the past 5 – 10 years, the offense may be a felony crime. Also, getting a DWI with a child under 15 years of age in the car results in a felony offense under Leandra s law. Refer to the table below for more information.

DWAI offenses are generally infractions or misdemeanor offenses so long as the offense involves alcohol (and not drugs).

What type of penalties might I face if I am convicted of a New York DWAI / DWI offense?

Upon conviction of a New York DWI / DWAI offense, a defendant can receive a variety of penalties including substance abuse screening / treatment / education. A range of penalties is set forth below:

NEW YORK STATE DWI AND DWAI PENALTY CHART

Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012

Group Policies are computer or user settings that can be defined to control or secure the Windows server and client infrastructure. Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012 before actually configuring and applying policy settings is very important. It is easy to understand GPO in Windows Server 2012. There are some new features of GP O in Windows Server 2012 .

Understanding GPO in Windows Server 2012

Two main components of GPO are, GPO Object and GPO Policy Settings.

GPO Object. GPO Object is an active directory object that has various group policy settings. These policy settings can be user settings or computer settings and can be applied to user or computers. GPO objects are stored in GPO container. The GPO object is stored in active directory database and each object has its own unique GUID (Globally Unique Identifier).

GPO Policy Settings. GPO policy settings are the real settings within GPO object that defines particular action. GPO policy settings comes from GPO templates which are stored in SYSVOL folder of each domain controller. For example, Prohibit Access to Control Panel is a GPO policy setting that will simply disable access to control panel. Most of the GPO settings can be enabled, disabled or not configured. The example is shown below,

When you create a group policy, the GPO object is created and stored in GPO container in active directory and at the same time, GPO template is created and stored in SYSVOL folder. After creating a group policy, it can be linked to Sites, Domains and OUs. Group policy is process in the order of LSDOU.

  1. Local Group Policy
  2. Sites
  3. Domains
  4. Organizational OUs

There are certain things that you should remember while creating and applying GPO settings. As stated earlier there are computer settings and user settings of each GPO object. Computer settings are applied at startup of the client machine. User settings are applied at use logon. Policies refresh can be initiated manually by using, C:\ gpupdate /force command or C:\ Invoke-Gpupdate powerShell cmdlet.

In fresh domain controller there are two default group policy settings configured. They are:

  1. Default Domain Policy. This policy is linked to the entire domain and has policies like password policies, account lockout policies and kerberos protocol policies. It is recommended that not to edit this policy. If you want to link new group policy then create new GPO and link to the domain.
  2. Default Domain Controller Policy. This policy setting is applied to domain controllers and is linked to domain controllers OU. This policy affects domain controllers only.

Best overseas city

Tokyo retains its title for the third year running, despite the fact that it faced one of the biggest challenges in its history, persuading tourists to return in the wake of last year’s devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit the north-east of the country. The policy of the city’s hoteliers to cut rates and run promotions appears to have paid dividends in winning back the confidence of visitors. Elsewhere, Seville enters the top 10.

Best European country

Iceland wins the crown this year, no doubt attracting visitors intrigued by all the footage of a landscape evolving and forming before our very eyes following the eruption of the Eyjafjallaj kull volcano in 2010, whose ash cloud forced the closure of European airspace. Perennial favourites Austria and Germany come a close second and third, but it’s heartening to see Greece enter the top 10 again following its economic travails.

Favourite long-haul country

We’re delighted to see that Japan has won this category for the second year. Japan saw a 28% fall in the number of visitors arriving in the country in 2011 compared with a year earlier, as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. But despite gloomy predications, by January 2012 the numbers were just 4% below those for the previous year, an extraordinary recovery in large part thanks to the tireless efforts of the Japan Tourism Agency to promote the country abroad and to welcome back tourists with the Japan: Thank You campaign. Cambodia, with its magnificent Khmer temples at Angkor Wat, takes the runners-up spot.

Best travel agent

In an age when the traditional travel agent is sometimes dismissed as unnecessary, Journeys la Carte is a shining example of what a brilliant service the good ones provide. The Uttoxeter-based agent retains its crown this year, sharing it with Worldwide Escapes. Both companies scored a perfect 100% rating.

Best online booking service

Best small tour operator

Joint winners Original Travel and McKinlay Kidd both scored a perfect 100%. When Original Travel launched in 2003 it was initially focusing on big short break, action-packed weekends for the time-poor. Since then it has acquired Tim Best Travel (in 2009) and Simoon Travel (in 2012) and created an innovative worldwide long-haul portfolio offering bespoke trips for honeymooners, families and adventurers. McKinlay Kidd are praised for their brilliant programme of enticing holidays that take in the best of Scotland from its wildlife to its whisky. They continue to grow, adding new experiences that make us want to drop what we’re doing and hotfoot it up to Scotland – their new Jaguar E-type tour of Skye a case in point.

Best large short break operator

Self-hosted Web Service on Windows Server 2012

When it comes to hosting web services, Microsoft Windows Server platform can do the job with or without an actual web server. In Windows Server, web server would be IIS. If IIS is installed, web service can be hosted as a website, be configured using .config files, and generally speaking all TCP/IP or SSL configuration would be done at the IIS level. This may be more convenient for people who are used to IIS or who have to have IIS up for other reasons, however in some cases you may prefer to avoid IIS and keep your attack surface to the minimum.

Self-hosting means no IIS to install and it relies on http.sys, something that is present on all Windows Server machines as part of the TCP/IP stack. Self-hosted services can be managed through netsh command line interface.

Discussion of pros and cons of self-hosted web services is outside the scope of this article but a good place to start reading up on that is on Stack Overflow .

Self-Hosted Web Service Installation

Self-hosted web service relies on something else other than IIS to open a socket and listen for inbound connections. This can be done by deploying your application as a Windows service. NET Framework has a handy utility called InstallUtil.exe. located in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ folder (.NET Framework 4.0, Windows Server 2012).

The command above installs a Visual Studio console application as a Windows service. Right after running this command, you can launch services.msc and check for presense of this new Windows service.

For console application to install as a Windows service, you need to add Installer class to your project, which will tell InstallUtil.exe how to deploy the service:

On line 10, the name of the Windows service is set to the WindowsServiceName string value from the application config file.

Configure URL Binding and SSL Certificate

For Windows service to bind successfully to a network socket, you need to configure URL access control list using netsh.exe CLI:

Since in this example we are using SSL (port 443, https) we also need to assign a valid certificate to the same binding:

Now this last command is a little tricky. How do you find out certificate_hash and app_guid of your certificate and application?

Certificate hash can be obtained directly by inspecting X.509 certificate using Certificates MMC snap-in, or via certutil -store command. Find the certificate you want to use, copy its cert hash value (deleting all spaces) and you are set.

Getting App ID is a tad more complicated. Best way to do this is by calling it from the code using the following method:

Call this method somewhere in the opening lines of your web services application and either Debug.Print the output to the console, or write it into event log, or simply break-point it and check it out in the immediate window. App ID does not change but getting it isn t very convenient.

Verify Configuration

That s all there is to setting up self-hosted web services on the Windows Server 2012 platform. Make sure that your Windows Firewall, if enabled, is configured to allow port 80/443 (as applicable).

At this point, start Windows service that was installed using InstallUtil.exe .

To confirm that your socket was opened successfully:

To confirm configuraion of URL ACL:

To confirm SSL certificate binding:

Closing Thoughts

Ultimately, it is up to you to configure the type of network binding (http or https) and the service URL (https://www.flexecom.com:443 ) of your web service. There are several ways to do this, the preferred way for self-hosted web services is to set these parameters directly using .NET code within your assembly. Whatever settings you configure, they need to match the netsh configuration (specifically URLACL), otherwise your service will fail to open the socket. SSL certificate is required for HTTPS bindings. More on how to do this in another post.

Binding Multiple Web Services to the Same Socket

Is possible! All you have to do is modify the URL of the web service in your code and make sure that netsh command gets executed to add all web service URLs to the http ACL. You can have many web services running off the same base URL (https://www.flexecom.com:443 ) as long as what follows after / is unique. This allows you to setup a production web service as well as a dev/qa web service using the same single-name SSL certificate, the same public IP address, and the same server.

Did you like this article? Share it with your friends!

If you get SSL Certificate add failed, Error: 87 message, or The parameter is incorrect message when you run the netsh http add sslcert command, try the following:

1. Stop the services that are running, which bind to the socket that uses this certificate
2. Go into netsh CLI (command line interface)
netsh [Enter]
http [Enter]
add sslcert hostnameport=www.flexecom.com:443 certhash= appid= certstorename=MY

This assumes that the certificate is imported into the Local Machine store of course.

Another note if your app code is searching for the certificate by a subject name, and if the subject name of a newly installed certificate matches a subject name of another certificate in the store (such as in the case of renewing an existing certificate), the code may fail to open a network binding with a new certificate if it finds more than one match based on the same subject name. It really depends on the app code. Obviously, solution is to delete the old certificate.

Hottest Travel Destinations of 2012

1 of 15

There’s always someplace new on the horizon. From southern China to Arkansas, here are the must-see travel destinations of 2012.

Imagine lazing in a hammock on a remote beach in Panama, where boldface names like Angelina Jolie and Michael Jordan have been spotted. It’s a trip within reach—rustic-but-stylish hotels start at $99—and a country that’s remaking itself for 2012.

Discovering new destinations might seem next to impossible, but one of the wonders of travel is that there’s always someplace new on the horizon. And even when you think you know a place, there’s a hidden side ripe for exploration. To uncover 2012’s most exciting destinations, T+L crisscrossed the globe, bringing back everything from Toronto’s new hot spots to secluded resorts in northern Mozambique.

Some of our picks reflect travelers’ increasing thirst for adventure and desire to immerse themselves in local ways. “Our clients are interested in remote, off-the-beaten-path destinations that still retain their traditional culture,” says Scott Wiseman, president of Abercrombie Kent USA.

Take Xishuangbanna, at the foot of the Himalayas in China’s southern Yunnan province. Though often overlooked in favor of Lijiang and Tibet, it’s home to an ethnically diverse population that still follows age-old customs—making it the place to get a cultural fix without the crowds. And a luxurious new Anantara resort means roughing it is not required.

Looking for something even more remote? It’s hard to top Corumbau in Brazil’s southern Bahia. The original inhabitants named it “far from everything” for good reason: a sojourn requires a bone-rattling, four-hour drive from the nearest airport. The rewards—deserted beaches, super-fresh seafood—make up for the journey.

For each destination, we’ve provided a breakdown of the kind of traveler it’s well suited to, the best time to go, and how to get there. Not all the destinations for 2012 are exotic and far-flung. Cutting-edge architecture and youthful creative energy are driving a renaissance in Guimarães, one of Portugal’s oldest cities.

Culture is also making over places such as Bentonville, AR, which Walmart heiress Alice Walton has graced with a free world-class museum of American art on 120 wooded acres.

Whether you’re a jet-setting sybarite, a design buff, or a thrill-seeking flashpacker, the places we’ve collected here will inspire you to make 2012 a year of new discoveries. —Jennifer Chen
