2015 Travel, Hospitality & Leisure Industry Outlook

Interview with Guy Langford

Where do you see the opportunities for growth in your sector?

US THL companies performed very well in 2014 and they are expecting continued robust growth in 2015. US visitor exports—the measure of money spent by international tourists—are expected to increase four percent to $200 billion in 2015, thanks to improvement in the global economic environment and increasing income levels in emerging markets.¹

THL companies based in the US will continue to seek out international growth opportunities, especially in the faster growing regions of Asia and Latin America. But for THL players, international expansion does not necessarily imply the kinds of “brick-and-mortar” organic capital investment that is common in other industries. Rather, THL players are increasingly using an “asset-light” strategy in which they expand their brand footprint globally without taking on huge capital investment and by exploring joint ventures with local partners. Hotel chains are using this approach in seeking entrée into newer markets through licensing agreements with local operators. Similarly, restaurants are using the asset-light franchise model that works so well for them domestically as they explore opportunities in foreign markets. At the same time, restaurants are collaborating with local companies in these foreign markets to assist with everything from site selection to designing menus and complying with local business standards.

Organic service expansion remains an important part of airline global growth strategy. Yet, airlines too employ an asset-light partnership approach in expanding service globally. Alliances such as OneWorld, for example, allow passengers on US airlines to book travel through the domestic carriers but fly on a foreign carrier. Such models let US carriers expand service into foreign markets without incurring the route expansion costs of actually servicing them.

Of particular note, US sports teams and leagues are finding fans internationally—boosted by technology drivers, mobile and social—leading to increasingly global brands. That trend will continue, especially in the brand-conscious leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA). Indeed, the success of the NFL games in London—now at three games per season—has prompted discussion to expand into other markets throughout the UK and Continental Europe.

Budget Travel Vacation Ideas: 10 Best Budget Destinations for 2015 #portugal

#cheap travel destinations
#

Where to Go in 2015!

Research suggests that 40 percent of American don’t take all their vacation days. We’re here to change all that! We’ve rounded up 10 brag-worthy places that are affordable and having their moment in 2015—the year we hope you’ll take ALL your vacation days. Not sure which of these 10 amazing destinations is right for you? Take our QUIZ to find out!

1. Northern Italy

Best for: Big-city culture and natural beauty

Why 2015. If you’ve always wanted to go to Italy, this is the year to do it. Expo Milano (expo2015.org ), a World’s Fair event expected to bring in more than 20 million visitors, starts May 1 and runs through Oct. 31. The theme is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life and so far more than 130 countries are participating in this global effort to promote a healthier lifestyle and sustainability worldwide.

What to do. There’s so much more to Milan than shopping. Stroll the easy-to-navigate streets of Milan’s historic city center and visit the Duomo, one of Italy’s most spectacular churches—the view from the top is well worth the $15 price of admission. Craving the countryside? Don’t miss Lake Como, a beautiful natural haven home to George Clooney and hundreds of tiny picturesque towns like Gravedona, Bellagio, Brunate, and Como that are begging to be explored. For a little adventure along the Italian Riviera, try Portofino, a beautiful seaside resort town just a two-hour drive from Milan—you can also get there by taking the train from Milan to Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, or Genoa and connecting to Portofino by boat, bus, or taxi.

Where to stay. Hotels in Milan can be expensive, especially when conventions are going on. For a unique, authentic Italian experience, try staying in a local neighborhood rather than a pricey chain hotel—Airbnb has a number of options all over town starting at just $75 a night for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center. In Como, stay at Hotel Barchetta Excelsior for great views of the lake, the perfect spot to serve as your base for exploring the rest of the area by boat or funicular (hotelbarchetta.it . from $159). Stay at B B Tre Mari Portofino for beautiful views of the Piazzetta and the Ligurian Sea below (bebtremariportofino.it . from $122).

2. BALI

Best for: Dreamy beaches and romance

Why 2015. If you’ve considered this Pacific paradise off-limits financially, this may be your year. Hotel prices on the Island of the Gods—the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia—are down 12 percent, according to the Hotel Price Index.

What to do. Take your pick: Relax on a distinctive black-sand beach (the color comes from iron, titanium, and other minerals deposited by Bali’s once-active volcanoes), get in the water for world-class surfing and diving (if you’re so inclined), explore the island’s jungle interior with its volcanoes and 10,000 temples (including the popular hillside temple Pura Luhur Batukau), or just hang by a hotel pool in one of the friendliest, gentlest environments on earth. When you’re ready for the Balinese version of a bustling metropolis, Ubud will delight you with its stunning royal palace and traditional market. (And you shouldn’t miss a chance to hear the island’s unique gamelan music, played primarily on traditional percussion instruments.) Whether you plant yourself on a beach or in the heart of Ubud, remember that you’ve come to Bali to be soothed into a state of perfect relaxation by the natural beauty and unique music and cultural traditions of this perfect island.

Where to stay. The Indigo Tree, in Ubud, is a short distance from the major sites but feels like a comfy cocoon, with coconut trees, a pool whose turquoise hue rivals the ocean’s, and lovely views of the island’s jungles and rice terraces. Want home-cooked meals served poolside? Just ask (indigotreebali.com . from $70).

3. NASHVILLE

Best for: Music and hip neighborhoods

Why 2015. The buzz about Nashville has reached a fever pitch for 2015. No longer a sleepy country music mausoleum, the newly hip city has reported 48 straight months of growth. Go now, and you’ll be visiting the town at the height of its renaissance—but before everyone else is in on the secret.

Travel Insured International Review 2015 #laos #travel

Travel Insured International Trip Protector Lite Review

Specifications

Travel insurance from Travel Insured International extends medical benefits that are less generous compared to insurance plans many holiday insurance firms offer.

This is, no doubt, because Travel Insured International s International Trip Protector Lite plan has one the lowest premiums of the policies available. This is a good family holiday insurance plan because it also insures one child under 18 years old per insured adult. This results in a cheap travel insurance policy that means lower costs to insure the whole family.

The company will compensate you, up to a certain amount, for your non-reimbursable expenses if a trip is canceled or interrupted for many reasons. Some examples of covered events include an accident while en route to departure; death or hospitalization of the traveler s host; sickness, accidental injury or death of the traveler or traveling companion, or a business partner or family member of the traveler or traveling companion; or bad weather that shuts down common carrier services for at least 24 consecutive hours.

In case your trip is delayed for 12 or more hours because of a covered event, this worldwide travel insurance policy will reimburse you for any prepaid, unused and nonrefundable portion of your expenses. This covers such things as extra transportation costs from the point where you were delayed to a point where you can join the trip for which you have paid. It also covers additional reasonable expenses for the meals and lodgings forced by the delay up to $100 per day.

If you compare travel insurance plans, Travel Insured International does not provide coverage if you miss a connection, unlike the best travel insurance plans.

If a common carrier loses your baggage, you can be paid a benefit of up to $750 (with a $50 deductible). If your baggage is delayed for 24 hours, you can be compensated for $200.

Some other useful international travel insurance benefits include help getting lost passports or visas back, and assistance getting prescription drugs and replacement eyeglasses. The cost of the prescription drugs is included under the policy s medical coverage, but the eyeglasses are not.

The company provides online access so you can report claims. Toll-free assistance by telephone provides referral services any time such as medical advice, translation services and numerous similar services. You can pay an additional premium to upgrade to the medical expense benefit and the emergency evacuation benefits.

130 World cities ranked cheapest to most expensive: Backpacker Index for 2015

We have all heard that some parts of the world are cheap to visit while others are expensive but most people have a hard time quantifying any more precisely. That s why Price of Travel launched our Backpacker Index numbers for cities all over the world in late 2010. Now totally updated in its 5th year, below you ll find all major destinations around the world ranked by price for backpackers.

More specific information can be found by clicking on the regional articles just below, or by clicking on the individual city names in the main list.

There were some major changes on the list this year, mainly due to large swings in currency in much of the world. Compared to the US Dollar, all European currencies weakened, as did the Canadian Dollar, while most Asian currencies hovered around the same level all year. Once again, Asia dominates the cheap part of the list with the first 7 spots, while Europe dominates the expensive part at the bottom.

Detailed information available by region

What the prices below mean

There is a longer explanation of the Backpacker Index on each of the regional pages, but the short version is that we found the price for a group of things for each destination, and then translated that into US dollars in late January 2015. While this data is meant for backpackers and budget travelers, the proportions will be nearly identical, so the list should also be useful to those with more money to spend.

For each city this daily total includes:

  • A dorm bed at a good and cheap hostel
  • 3 budget meals
  • 2 public transportation rides
  • 1 paid cultural attraction
  • 3 cheap beers (as an entertainment fund )

Backpacker Index: 130 global destinations for 2015

Travelzoo Picks Best Travel Deal Destinations for 2015

Nov 03, 2014 | Updated Jan 03, 2015

Travelzoo A global Internet media company and trusted publisher of travel, entertainment and local deals

Travelzoo Deal Experts have combed the world over looking for destinations where U.S. travelers will get the biggest bang for their buck in 2015. We present the Wow Deal Destinations for 2015 . Brazil, Puerto Rico, Texas Hill Country, Cruising Asia and Dubai — based on travel trends, national events and our “deal expert” hunch.

Where will you vacation in 2015?

Travelzoo Picks 2015 Travel Deal Destinations

1. Brazil. Visit this South America hot spot during its “gap year” — between 2014’s FIFA World Cup and the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics. More than 111,000 soccer-loving Americans visited Brazil this past summer. To accommodate the influx of sporting tourism, the country plans to open more than 400 new hotels by 2016. The airlines aren’t far behind either, with carriers such as American Airlines adding new nonstop routes to its schedule. Wholesalers are quickly upping inventory as well with vacation deals saving up to $1000.

2. Puerto Rico. No U.S. passport required: enough said, right? Also, it’s never been easier to get to Puerto Rico as major airlines (JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines) launched new and/or increased services this past year. Combine that with the fact this Caribbean island is looking to add more than 5,000 hotel rooms by 2017, and you’ve set yourself up to grab deals that are up to 50% off.

3. Texas Hill Country. Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the deals. From San Antonio to Austin and the surrounding Hill Country, we found hotel deals aplenty, from $129 per night at 4-star resorts. With nearly a half-dozen new hotels opening in 2015, there’s plenty of places for every budget from boutique properties to sprawling, luxury resorts. Texas Hill Country is easy to navigate, just a three- to four-hour drive for Dallas and Houston residents. Flights are a breeze with two airports, Austin and San Antonio, serviced by low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

4. Cruising Asia. Cruise lines are expanding their fleets in Asia with new ship introductions and itinerary plans. Royal Caribbean International plans to move their newest ship, Quantum of the Seas, to the Shanghai port; this large ocean liner allows for 4,190 more passengers to experience Asia by sea. Oceania Cruises alone has announced 12 new destinations for the upcoming 2015-’16 schedule focusing on longer, destination-intensive sailings to the likes of Jeju, South Korea, and Boracay Island, Philippines. As the itineraries multiply, so do the deals. Choose from large ocean liners or small, luxury ships with roundtrip air included.

5. Duba i: With 71 million annual passengers stepping foot in Dubai’s two airports, the city has positioned itself as a major player in global tourism. Travelers who visit now can take advantage of a building boom and early-bird deals ahead of the World Expo in 2020. A destination unto itself, Dubai is also a simple addition to international travel plans with direct flights from major cities including London and Bangkok. To ease the potential complexities of booking a trip we’ve secured vacation packages starting at $1999.

— Blaire Constantinou is a producer at Travelzoo based in Los Angeles. Travelzoo has 250 deal experts from around the world who rigorously research, evaluate and test thousands of deals to find those with true value.

Three years later, the web has evolved and new talent has emerged. After considering hundreds of sites (the internet: it likes to travel), we’re proud to announce the 24 Best Travel Blogs and Websites of 2015 .

This year, we’re honing in on personal journeys and very specific lenses people use when traveling. You’ll find a blog that distills the world into 12-hour itineraries, a website that catalogs the world’s best reading nooks, an online compendium of weekend jaunts from NYC, and a guide to traveling in search of the best oysters. Happy exploring.

When Where To Go in 2015?

2015 is upon us, so now s the time to start thinking about planning your next holiday! Exciting times ahead, but the hard part is deciding where to go and when!

We’ve put together a short round-up of some of our top destinations and recommendations of when and where to travel. Plus we have a fantastic New Year sale now on, so there s no excuse not to start planning now!

January – Dubai

Situated in the Arabian Desert, Dubai has very little rainfall and offers heat and sunshine pretty much year round. December through to February are a little cooler so offer fantastic conditions for getting out and about sightseeing, or playing golf.

The Maldives boasts a tropical climate with plentiful sunshine year round. However the dry season runs from January through to March/April, so February is the perfect month to bask in the sunshine on the many white sandy beaches.

March – Mexico, Cancun

There is no bad time to visit the Mexican Rivera Maya. The stunning coast line and lively atmosphere are forever popular with holiday makers. Look out in the summer months though, from June through to October there is high humidity and the highest likelihood of hurricanes.

April – Thailand, Koh Samui

Situated in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is its third largest island, surrounded by dive sites and fantastic beaches. The best time to visit is December through to June to avoid the rainy season and potential torrential storms.

May – South Africa

South Africa is a vast country with many attractions, whether you’re interested in game viewing on a safari or visiting the wine lands of Stellenbosch. The best time to visit Kruger National Park is May to September where the animals congregate at watering holes, and the wine lands can be visited any time.

Stay at:

California offers everything you could wish for, from sandy beaches to exploring national parks to visiting the bright lights of Hollywood. One of the best ways to see it all is on a fly drive, along the coastal highway from San Fran to LA, with lots in between:

July – Canada

Canada is home to magnificent national parks, spectacular landscapes of snow-topped mountains and glaciers, and dramatic coast lines. You can’t do it all at once, but July is a great time to visit. Try Ontario with dramatic Niagara Falls, Toronto and Ottowa.

August – Orlando

A popular time to visit during the summer months with families, but with good reason as the schools are out for summer and Disney World is in full swing with tons to offer families. Stay in a villa and hire a car to see more of this spectacular region.

The fantastic sub tropical climate of Mauritius means it’s always a great time to visit. However September through to December is one of the best times, with temperatures just hovering below 30 degrees. It’s also a time that sees many of the country’s ceremonies and festivals.

October – Barbados

Visitors flock to Barbados year round, due to its tropical climes and endless white sandy beaches. Barbados boasts almost year round sunshine, while its east Caribbean location on the Atlantic Ocean ensures clean air and a fresh breeze. A haven of white, sandy beaches and clear, turquoise seas, world-class golf courses and rich colonial history, holidays in Barbados cater for a full range of tastes.

November West Coast of Malaysia

Kuala Lumper, Panang and Pangkor situated on the West coast of Malaysia are perfect in the winter months, while the east coast is being battered by the intense rainy season. Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant city that features colonial architecture and lively markets, while Pangkor and Penang offer sensational tropical beach escapes.

The dry season in Cuba runs during the winter from November through to April, a very popular time for visitors with less rainfall and less humidity. Temperatures during this time average around 26°C. There is so much to see in Cuba it will leave you wanting more, with a mix of stunning architecture, lush gardens and sandy beaches.

The Real Scoop on Pet Air Travel in 2015 #118 #travel

#airline travel
#

Since 2005, the airlines have been required to report monthly on incidents involving pets while under their care for travel. Incidents include injury, loss, and deaths of animals. According to this data there were 29 deaths of animals and 26 injuries to animals while flying in 2012. However, with well over 500,000 dogs traveling per year by air, these numbers do not seem significantly higher than the general death rate in the animal population. If you would like more information on the reports see DogFriendly.com’s link.

If you do need to take your pet on a commercial airliner, there are some tips that may help. Airports have recently been required to provide pet relief areas for service dogs as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They allow pet dogs to use these areas as well. Some airports, such as Atlanta, Reno and JFK’s American Airlines terminal have full scale dog parks at the airport. Other airports have a small dirt area. A few airports such as Seattle and Salt Lake City have a dog relief area after passing through security. Most airports would require that you be outside security to access the pet relief area. DogFriendly.com has information on the pet relief areas at a number of airports at this link.

If your dog has to go in the cargo hold, it may be helpful that they are not alone on the flight. Dogs, being pack animals, feel comfort in having others with them. If you have more than one dog traveling, that would give comfort to each. In addition, some airlines carry many more dogs than others. In the United States, it appears that United, American, Delta and Alaska Airlines carry the most dogs. So on these airlines you are more likely to have other dogs on the flight and have people skilled in handling the dogs. There is much debate on whether tranquilizing dogs helps or hurts, so you and your vet will need to make that decision. It is important to note that in the U.S. service dogs or guide dogs are normally allowed to travel with their owner in the cabin, regardless of the size or breed of dog. Canines traveling for search and rescue operations or law enforcement are also usually allowed in the cabin but policies vary with each airline company. Dogs used for these purposes must be accompanied by their owner and usually do not need to be in a kennel, but must be harnessed (and sometimes muzzled). This is not necessarily the policy for International flights. One thing that has become much easier in the last ten years is the ability to take your dog between countries. It used to be that many places, notably the United Kingdom, Hawaii and Australia required lengthy quarantines to bring your dog in due to fear of rabies. While Australia does still require quarantine, most other countries, including the United Kingdom and Hawaii no longer require quarantine if the proper steps are taken. General requirements are micro chipping, up to date rabies shots, and maybe a rabies blood test, but this requirement is becoming rarer. And quite a bit of paperwork. But once you’ve set up your dog for International travel, then you can travel with your dog to much of the world. If you are planning to take your dog overseas, it is important to plan early, make sure your pet’s microchip is in before their rabies shot and that the vet records the microchip number with all of their rabies shots. For more information on these steps, see DogFriendly.com’s section on International Border Requirements for Pets.

Are there other options available to dog owners? Well, yes and no. One alternative can be expensive and one involves a longer travel time. First, lets start with the most ideal, but also the more expensive option. Some airline charter companies allow your dog of any size or breed to travel in the cabin with you. They just require that your dog be restrained by a leash or car seat harness during take off and landing. Other than that, dogs are allowed to ride in the cabin with you, right next to you. The majority of chartered planes are typically smaller planes like prop planes or Lear jets. So why isn’t everyone flying with their pooch this way? The issue is cost. Who would pay for this? One operator says “Wealthy, VIP’s and corporate execs” pay for charters. The cost can be thousands of dollars. A flight from San Francisco, California to Phoenix, Arizona for four people and two dogs could be $6-8 thousand one way. A flight from Nashville, Tennessee to Miami, Florida could be $8-10 thousand one way. However, if you have a flexible schedule and can give advanced notice or be scheduled on an empty leg flight, prices could be cut in half. Some air charter brokers are Magellan Jets. Eljet and Air Charter Network.

The other alternative is to drive or have your pooch driven. Driving does take much longer than flying, especially across country. While your pooch can easily go with you, driving long distances are out of the question for some people that do not want to spend days on the road. So instead of driving your pooch yourself, have someone else drive him or her. There is a number of companies that will transport your pet across the country and other companies that will transport your car with your pets. The dogs will be in kennels and away from you for quite some time. Dog owners are not allowed on the shuttles, but you can fly and they will drive your pooch for you. And of course, they will make the appropriate potty and exercise breaks along the way, give your dog food, water, and even treats and toys. Each animal is in his or her own individual carrier or cage while on the road. Every shuttle bus has two or three drivers on board and they drive 24 hours per day, with the exception of pit stops of course. The rates are pretty affordable and can offer a reasonable alternative when you need to transport your pooch within the continental United States.

If you are heading between the United States and England then there is one other option to commercial airlines or charters. The fabulous Queen Mary II Cruise Ship makes the crossing a number of times a year between New York and Southampton. While dogs are not allowed in the cabins on the ship, there is a kennel onboard. You may visit the dog there, walk the dog, and spend some time with the dog each day. The crossing usually takes about 5 – 6 days each way.

Our hope is that, one day, dogs of all sizes and breeds will be welcome in the cabin next to us on all commercial airliners. We would like to see a policy on airlines where you can at least buy the entire row of three seats for you and your dog if necessary so no one else would need to sit next to your dog. Maybe airlines could require that people with pets that don’t fit in kennels under the seats carry muzzles in case it proves necessary for any reason such as excessive barking or aggression. Most people who travel with pets would much rather have the pets with them in the cabin. Flying is often stressful enough without the additional worries about your pet being unattended. Dogs are allowed on trains in Europe and they co-exist with the other passengers. Why not on airplanes as well?

The Best Travel Credit Card of 2015: Chase Sapphire Preferred #airline

#best travel credit card
#

But apart from the Ultimate Rewards program, how did we come to the conclusion that the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card provides the best overall value for everyday finances as well as travel redemption? We asked and answered the following questions:

1. How many redemption options are available with the points?

The Sapphire Preferred has two different types of redemption options available. The first and best value can be achieved by using any of Chase’s transfer partners. There are 11 airline, hotel and rail travel partners for which points can be transferred at a ratio of 1:1. When a transfer is complete, the points immediately appear in the destination partner account no waiting required.

  • Airline transfer partners: British Airways, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic
  • Hotel transfer partners: Hyatt, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Marriott and Ritz Carlton
  • Amtrak is also a transfer partner, allowing redemptions on any of their routes across the country

An alternative use of the points is to book travel directly through Chase’s portal. Redeemed points can be cashed in at a rate of 1.25 cents per point, so 10,000 points would equate to $125 in travel.

2. Are the points transferrable to my spouse, significant other or family?

Points earned with the Sapphire Preferred, known as Ultimate Rewards, can be transferred freely to a spouse or significant other’s account for free. This ability to combine points across accounts adds significant value to the program as there is never a need to worry about errant points.

3. How many points are awarded as a sign-up bonus?

There is a $4,000 minimum spending requirement to be met within the first three months of the card opening, and then 50,000 bonus points are awarded to the user. Add another authorized user to the account (and ensure they make a purchase within that same three-month period) and you’ll be awarded an additional 5,000 points!

4. How many points are earned for everyday spend?

The Sapphire Preferred card earns one point per dollar on everyday spending.

Switzerland holidays

Exceptional scenery, outdoor activity and chocolate box villages harmonise with snow-capped peaks, ice glaciers and cultural cities.

Central Switzerland

Holiday highlights

Clean, safe, efficient and beautiful, this is a country like no other. The Swiss watch is renowned for its sharp time keeping, the Swiss chocolate is known to melt-in-the-mouth and the Swiss water of the thermal springs is so pure it can help heal the joints and the respiratory system. But then what else would you expect from a country that speaks four languages?

From boating to a rock in the middle of the spectacular Rhine Falls to ascending Europe’s highest railway station for bewitching Alpine views or marvelling at neoteric architecture that challenges the peripheries of design, landlocked Switzerland is multifarious in its offerings of things you can see and do.

Geneva is the ideal destination for food lovers; housing nearly 40 Michelin starred restaurants. The cerulean blue of the Lake is surrounded by snowy mountain summits and gentle hillsides striped with vineyards. Explore Lausanne’s designer boutiques or roll your dice in the famous casino of Montreux. If it’s modern art you love, head to Vevey and see Jean-Pierre Vaug’s fork sculpture which literally pierces Lake Geneva. For a scenic tour, jump on a Mouette (water taxi) around the Lake and at night, visit the atmospheric Old Town for a touch of elegant, local flavour.

Travel in style on the Glacier Express visiting the glamorous Alpine resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. With its glass domed roof and panoramic windows this is the most spectacular train journey in Switzerland. If train travel isn’t for you, how about taking a helicopter flight from Zermatt to the top of the Matterhorn. one of the most captivating mountains in the world? For picture-perfect postcard Swiss scenery, enjoy the cogwheel to the Jungfrau Plateau, the highest station in Europe. The mountain giants of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau will tower over you and from the famous observatory platform you can take in views of Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Welcome to Bernese Oberland and its sugar-white mountains – possibly the most scenic Alpine region in Switzerland. In Interlaken. ancient unhurried ice is still etching and shaping its way through the peaks, meaning that here you can experience everything from ice climbing, glacier trekking, and hiking to paragliding, handgliding and canyoning. Sail and windsurf on Lake Thun and take in the magic of the mesmerising Blue Ice Grotto in Grindelwald.

If you are looking for something more lively, immerse yourself in the city of Zürich. where the Limmat River emerges from the Zurichsee and runs through the city. The Old Town of Altstadt is a pedestrian zone in the day-time and packed with medieval churches, including St. Peter’s, boasting Europe’s largest clock face. Zürich itself is abundant in vibrant nightlife, a large art and cultural scene including Marc Chagall’s magnificent stained glass windows at the Fraumünster Church, designer shopping at Bahnhofstrasse and an array of great restaurants. It makes a fascinating urban contrast to the Alpine scenery you will have already witnessed and is the perfect beginning or end of a trip to this beguiling country.

Frommer – s – Best Places to Go in 2015 #travel

#best places to travel

In June 2014, UNESCO World Heritage put the Selous Game Reserve on the list of World Heritage sites that are most endangered. Why would a reserve ever be considered at risk? Because at more than 19,000 square miles, the area is impossible to seal against poachers. Elephant and rhinoceros populations have plummeted 90 percent—90 percent! —since 1982. A third of Selous’ elephants, or 25,000 animals, were killed between 2009 and 2013 alone.

The slaughter has been so unsustainable, it is now predicted that elephants will be close to extinction in Sub-Saharan Africa within 10 years, and by 2018, rhino deaths will surpass rhino births, making extinction a mathematical certainty. This qualifies Selous as the most depressing “get there now” Top Destinations designee we’ve ever named.

“Send him to Belize “. That was the euphemistic advice given to lead character Walter White in the final season of TV’s Breaking Bad by his lawyer Saul, who felt that Walt should bump off his cop brother-in-law. Immediately after the episode aired, the Belize Tourism Board issued an invitation to the cast for all-expense paid vacations.

Since Belize has far more Mayan sites, its a better choice for the traveler who wants to mix culture and history in with their green time. Over the course of a week, you might find yourself scaling ancient Mayan pyramids or swimming into caves once used by the Mayans for ceremonies. In the Actun Tunichil Muknal  cave in the Cayo region, centruies-old pots and the skulls of victims of ritual sacrifices have been calcified to the floor. (So it turns out an ancient Walter White actually did send someone to Belize.) Prime dving and snorkeling spots also give his tiny country a thriving beach culture—the opening image for this year’s slideshow was taken in Belize.

For the adventure traveler, there are few countries as satisfying or as suprisingly beautiful as Belize, so visit it before the rest of the world realizes what it’s missing.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, U.S.A.

It’s no secret that Yellowstone is one of the most awe-inspiring places to visit in the United States. But in 2015 and 2016, vacationing here will be a more comfortable, contemporary experience. That’s because the Park’s hospitality facilities are undergoing a major overhaul to the tune of $134 million in renovations and new builds. The historic Lake Yellowstone Hotel (designed by Robert Reamer, the man behind the Old Faithful Inn) has been restored to its Colonial Revival grandeur. Meanswhile, ecologically sound, Western-chic lodges are being erected where the dingy, 1960’s era Canyon Lodges and cabins used to be. The modular units are being fabricated in Boise and trucked in by summer, so construction noise and disruption should be minimal.

And finally, now there’s a new reason to go in winter, too. Revised regulations allow one group per day to snowmobile into the park without hiring a guide, which lowers touring costs dramatically.

Booking.com Review

By providing robust tools that greatly simplify user experience, customer favorite Booking.com offers easy access to one of the widest selections of both traditional hotels and harder-to-find lodging options.

The Good

One of the best in customer satisfaction

According to an independent study by J.D. Power and Associates in 2012, Booking.com scored the best in terms of overall customer satisfaction. They received above-average ratings in all categories — the only company in the study to do so — and customers particularly appreciated Booking.com’s clean website layout and intuitive booking process. The wide variety of travel accommodations available and the detailed information about each property also left a good impression on those who visited the website. These may seem like relatively insignificant details, but they make a big difference in your overall experience.

Deals on all types of accommodations

In addition to hotels, Booking.com offers deals on a number of other places to stay, including resorts, vacation rentals, and hostels. Some of these lodging options can be found on a few other travel sites, but certain types of accommodations like bed and breakfasts and homestays are a little harder to come by on most major travel booking websites. If you’re interested in one of these alternative travel accommodations, definitely explore what Booking.com has to offer because you won’t be able to find a selection like this elsewhere.

Thematic search functionality

Booking.com enables you to search for travel accommodations by theme, some of which are based on locations or amenities like beach and spa hotels, while others are tailored to specific groups of travelers like family and business hotels. If you fit into one of these categories, this is a good place to start your search. Additional search criteria, including specific dates and hotel ratings, can be added to speed up the process of finding the perfect place to stay.

Account available on any device

Your Booking.com account is accessible from your computer, tablet, and smartphone, which facilitates the booking process considerably. For example, say you’re in the middle of looking at hotels online when you have to run out the door. Sign in to your account on your mobile app and click on recent searches. Since everything is synced, you can quickly return to what you were looking at without having to re-enter your search criteria. Credit card information is also stored across all devices so you can make a reservation quickly.

Powerful mobile capabilities

Booking.com’s app has garnered some of the highest reviews of any mobile app in the industry, earning over a 4.5 out of 5 stars from customers. Available on Android, Apple, and Windows phones, the app gives you access to all of the same search tools found on the company’s website. If you’re looking for a last-minute hotel, Booking.com’s mobile app shows you what’s available in your area with just a few clicks. Once you’ve made your reservation, the app even provides a map from where you are to the location using the GPS in your phone. Signing into your account from the app makes the booking process move even faster and all of your searches and payment information are automatically synced with your phone for future use.

Secret deals for members

Booking.com’s newsletters contain Secret Deals, which are half-price hotels and other travel accommodations available for a short time. These emails can be customized by selecting your favorite travel destinations. Booking.com keeps an eye out for any deals that apply and alerts you right away, so you can finally book that dream vacation at a price that fits within your budget. These newsletters are free to subscribe to and you can unsubscribe at any time, but they’re definitely worth a look if you want insider information on the best hotel deals available.

Compare Reviews for Travel Insurance

Anything can happen while you re on vacation, so it s important to be prepared before your bags are even packed. Check out these common travel insurance scenarios to see if you could benefit from travel insurance on your next trip.

Planning the perfect vacation is a task that takes months, and many people sink thousands of dollars into a trip. A sudden emergency, bad weather or lost luggage can turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance offers peace of mind when planning a vacation. It may cover cancellations, flight delays, property damage, lost luggage, health emergencies and much more.

What features matter most?

Protection from Cancellation, Delay or Interruption

Sometimes, situations beyond your control impact your travel plans. Weather, family tragedies, illness, work and other issues can cause you to cancel, postpone or interrupt your trip.

  • Weather or worker delays. Some travel insurance policies offer reimbursement for trips interrupted by worker strikes or the weather.
  • Sickness, injury or death. An illness, injury or death of your or a loved one might require a trip cancellation, but with the right coverage it won t cost the policyholder financially.
  • Work-related interruptions. If work interferes with your ability to travel, you can cancel and get your money back with the right coverage. The same is true if you become unemployed, making a trip an unwise expenditure.
  • Medical and dental coverage

    Transportation coverage

    Customer service

    Property loss or damage

    Extensions on demand

What are different types of travel insurance?

    One-time only

    Annual plan

    Long-term plan

    Group plans

Like many products, buying several policies at once may offer a group discount. Typically, these are sold to groups of 10 or more.

Best Places to Travel in 2015

By Travel + Leisure Staff December 10, 2014

“Fez is multilayered, multifaceted,” says resident Tara Stevens. “Every time I go out the front door, I discover something. This is a city on the cusp of change—and it’s exciting to be a part of that.”

Stevens, a British food writer, and American Stephen Di Renza are behind Fez’s stylish Restaurant No. 7, which hosts a rotating series of guest chefs. They’re part of a group of expats restoring riads and encouraging experimentation—along with enterprising locals like Anis Sefrioui, who recently unveiled Hotel Sahrai, with 50 contemporary rooms overlooking an infinity pool and a light-filled spa with elaborate latticework.

The world is getting smaller, but the chances of having an extraordinary new experience are only increasing. We’ve identified 50 standout destinations, based on industry news and trends, with input from contributing writers, A-List travel agents, and our new local experts. These are the places changing the travel map, whether it’s an emerging arts hub in Germany or a quiet stretch of sand in the Caribbean.

So where else can 2015 take you? The panda capital of Chengdu, China, is appealing to a broader range of travelers with a new 72-hour no-visa policy and a packed lineup of hotel openings: Six Senses, Fairmont, and Swire’s Temple House. In Japan, meanwhile, the dollar has hit new highs—good timing for powder buffs who can also now use Vail’s Epic Pass at Hokkaido’s Niseko United resort.

And you may be surprised by what’s brewing close to home. We selected a dozen destinations in the U.S. including Houston, for its ambitious food scene, and Miami, where the spotlight has turned to the Mid-Beach neighborhood. The latest art-centric 21c Museum Hotel will open its doors in Durham, NC, a once-sleepy college town that now thrums with fair-trade coffee shops, micro-distilleries, and some of the best barbecue around.

What inspires a trip varies from person to person, of course. But as a head start, we’ve mapped out 12 months’ worth of places with the kind of “it” factor that Fez’s Tara Stevens describes.

Read on for our picks, and join the conversation with hashtag #bestplaces2015.

Top 5 destinations for incentive travel in 2015

    by AYMTM

Planning an incentive trip? Here are our top 5 destinations  for 2015.

Based on enquiries we have received, the places we have visited recently and where we are taking clients to in the coming months, we have compiled our top 5 en vogue destinations for incentive travel in 2015, including our tips for where to stay, where to eat and what to do while you are there.

There are trends in just about everything, from baby names to what people are searching for on the internet this week. Incentive travel  is no different. These trends come from the most visited incentive destinations, new destinations emerging, or a previously popular destination becoming a bit of a has-been!

    1. Cape Town

Cape Town consistently rates as one of the perennial favourites for savvy incentive buyers. It has the favourable rand, new hotels, fantastic restaurants and all the classic ingredients, such as an epic coastline and awesome scenery, to make it our top selling long haul destination. Night flights and minimal time change make it perfect for avoiding jet lag. British Airways offer daily non-stop flights from London Heathrow.

    Stay: One Only Resorts

For luxury and style in Cape Town, our favourite hotel is the One Only Resort. Two restaurants, run by acclaimed chefs -Michelin-starred chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa and local celebrity chef Reuben Riffel are connected by a bar and lounge, all with incredible views of Table Mountain.

The hotel is central to just about everything, making it easy to experience the wildlife safaris and wine country excursions that Cape Town has to offer, along with Robben Island and so much more. After all those excursions, you’ll probably want a bit of calm, so we recommend you try the hotel spa, situated on its very own private island and offering every treatment you could possible want, and a few you may not have thought of!

    Eat: The Test Kitchen

For a top dining experience (the best in South Africa, let alone Cape Town!) The Test Kitchen is definitely the place to go. Chef and owner, Luke Dale-Roberts, has been called ‘a truly fantastic chef’ by Heston Blumenthal, which we think is quite a good recommendation!

British chef Luke trained in Europe and has launched restaurants all around Asia. These influences are very apparent on his delectable menu, and the high quality wine list complements perfectly!

If your last supper was eaten at The Test Kitchen, you’d die happy!

    Do: Beach BBQ

There are so many wonderful things to do in Cape Town, but one party we took to Cape Town was very happy with the beach BBQ we organised near the spectacular Cape Point, where surprise kayaks turned up to transport guests to speedboats for a riveting speed ride around the ‘tip of Africa’.

Combine Cape Town with a safari!

You want the best flight deal? Google it

Google’s “Flights” search tool makes finding the best airfare deal significantly easier.

The prices that Google ( GOOGL. Tech30 ) shows will appear in gray and green (green for lowest).

When you click on the day you want to travel, Google will list the flights for that date in order of cost, grouping together all the times when you can fly at the lowest price.

If you’re curious about what time of the year flights between two cities are the lowest, Google Flights can show you a bar chart that will give you a glimpse of the best prices throughout the year.

Google Flights is the best tool to find the cheapest airfare.

Maybe you know when you want to fly, but you’re not sure where to go? Google Flights has an interactive map that will show you prices for destinations around the world.

You can also search for generic terms, such as “flights to Europe” or “flights to Mexico.” Google Flights also has an “I’m feeling lucky” button that will suggest popular destinations and other locations based on your search history.

Google said it found that 54% of people don’t know where they want to travel when they decide to plan their vacations.

What Google doesn’t show is whether prices will drop in the near future. Microsoft Bing and Kayak provide services that predict when prices are expected to rise or fall.

But Google said those tools aren’t typically very helpful.

“Though it’s sometimes hard to pull the trigger because you’re afraid the price will drop tomorrow (or next Tuesday, maybe?), our experience shows it’s usually best to book right away,” said Eric Zimmerman, Google Flights product manager, in a blog post.

In 2011, Google purchased a company called ITA. which provides flight information to websites, such as Expedia ( EXPE ). Kayak, Hipmunk and Priceline ( PCLN. Tech30 ). The data Google controls includes flight times, availability and prices.

Competitors Kayak and Expedia initially opposed the deal before the Department of Justice forced Google to promise that it would continue to promote competition.

23 Cheapest European cities and airports to fly into in 2015

23 Cheapest European cities and airports to fly into in 2015

So many of us starting in the US or Canada will be visiting multiple cities when we tour Europe that we have the luxury of flying into several different destinations. But with the airline business changing so rapidly, how do we know which are the cheapest cities to fly into?

Not too many years ago the cheapest flights into Europe were almost always into the largest and busiest airports, which are in London, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam, but times have changed. Now those are all among the most expensive airports to fly into within Europe, so savvy travelers on multi-stop trips are better off starting elsewhere.

    How the test was done

For each city tested I found the cheapest fare starting from the 4 largest cities in the US (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston) plus Atlanta (by popular demand in 2014) along with Canada s largest city (Toronto) in early May, and the cheapest fare in mid July. Then I averaged the two fares and then averaged the fares into all 6 cities into on Index number.

Needless to say, the rankings starting in individual cities can vary from the combined list, but generally they aren t far apart. A bit surprisingly, only a handful of the cheapest flights were non-stops, so almost everyone will be changing planes exactly once in each direction over the Atlantic.

How to use the list below

Especially since many of the cheapest cities below are remote, the obvious strategy is to keep going down the list until you come across one of the cities you intend on visiting. Hopefully you can then find a cheap flight and use that as a hub to explore other cities by rail or low-cost airlines.

Overall, the differences in fares from the top to the bottom of this list are not great enough to justify flying into one and then booking another separate round-trip to your final destination on a low-cost airline, though in some cases it might work out cheaper.

10Best: Places to find a travel bargain in 2015

Like real estate, finding an affordable travel destination is all about location. “All things being equal, there are some countries where you’re going to get a lot more for your money,” says Tim Leffel . author of The World’s Cheapest Destinations. (Booklocker.com. $15.95). Quite often, bargains are fueled by political and economic events, and short-lived. Leffel shares some destinations likely to yield deals in 2015 with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.

    Tanzania

Ebola fears have sent African tourism plummeting, although the affected areas are closer to Europe and Brazil than many parts of Africa. “Safaris are on sale. Some operators have seen business drop by 50% or 70% and they are willing to offer discounts,” Leffel says. “It’s silly to avoid the continent because of what’s happening in one corner.” tanzaniatouristboard.com

    Argentina

Inflation and financial challenges once again make this South American country a bargain for travelers, who can easily access a gray-market exchange rate that’s official enough to be published in newspapers. “Across the country, if you pay in hard currency, you’ll get a much better deal,” Leffel says. 212-603-0443; turismo.gov.ar

    Mexico

Leffel, who has lived in Mexico for a year and a half, knows firsthand the cost savings to be found south of the border. “It is perpetually a good deal, especially if you go to the interior. But right now the exchange rate is very, very good.” While beach resort areas are generally more costly, there may be bargains to be found in Los Cabos, which suffered hurricane damage in September. 800-446-3942; visitmexico.com

    Ecuador

While the Galapagos Islands aren’t necessarily a bargain, the rest of this South American country has recently begun attracting more visitors, who are delighted to discover refurbished colonial churches and Amazon basin ecotours. “The roads are a lot better. The train lines are open again. There’s money pouring into infrastructure. It has always been a deal, but most people didn’t know that,” Leffel says. ecuador.travel

    Portugal

This Mediterranean country, long a bargain destination, continues to offer value. “It has been compounded by the fiscal crisis, which has been hanging on longer in the south than parts of northern Europe,” Leffel says. “Prices really have not gone up for four or five years. Restaurant meals, a bottle of wine, hotel rooms are the same price they have been for ages.” visitportugal.com

    Hungary

This central European gem has gotten a lot more attention in recent years as it has been discovered by Danube river cruise passengers, who consistently rate it as one of their favorite stops. And since the country doesn’t use the euro, savings are noticeable. “The word has gotten out that Budapest is one of the great cities in Europe for tourists. You can find fantastic hotel deals, especially outside of the summer. It’s one of the best deals in Europe,” Leffel says. gotohungary.com

    Nepal

This Himalayan kingdom has long been considered one of the world’s cheapest countries for lovers of outdoor adventures like trekking, hiking and rafting. “It’s a perpetual bargain and it’s much easier to get your head around than India because it’s smaller,” Leffel says. “It’s not getting massively overdeveloped or overcrowded.” welcomenepal.com

    Vietnam

The world’s top hotel values are probably found in Vietnam, Leffel says. “Whether you’re a backpacker or staying the best hotel in the city, you’re getting great value for your money.” The country has also been improving its roads and trains. Another plus: “They have some of the cheapest beer in the world.” vietnamtourism.com

    Indonesia

While this Asian giant is on the rise with infrastructure improvements and an improving quality of life for residents, it remains a bargain. Even the island paradise of Bali can be affordable, if you stay away from international hotel chains. “The dollar’s really strong there now and there are lots of places to go. It’s a really big country,” Leffel says. indonesia.travel

    Canada

Although it’s hardly dirt cheap, prices north of the border have gotten more reasonable with the Canada’s currency recently dropping to a five-year-low against the U.S. dollar. “For a while people didn’t want to go to Montreal and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, because it was too expensive,” Leffel says. But now that the exchange rate is breaking in favor of Americans, “you won’t face sticker shock.” canada.travel

    Travel Insurance Reviews

    The Best Travel Insurance

You never think you need travel insurance until an unexpected event occurs. It doesn’t have to be costly, but sometimes it’s worth the few extra dollars to be safe. After researching the top companies, Travelex Insurance Services lands on top for their broad coverage options and custom packages.

How we chose the best travel insurance

We compiled a list of 23 travel insurance companies and selected 11 of the best companies to review based on 53 of the most important features.

What travel insurance features matter and why

The best companies stand out by covering pre-existing medical conditions as well as work-related reasons. This is an important category to consider when selecting an insurance company because it gives customers a good sense of whether or not the insurance offers the coverage they are looking for.

Support explains the different ways customers can contact the insurance provider if they have questions or concerns. In most cases, this means by phone or by email.
