What – s the Difference Between Accredited – Non-Accredited Degree Programs?

#

What’s the Difference Between Accredited & Non-Accredited Degree Programs?

Bob’s College of Engineer Knowledge may lure you in with promises of chips and salsa in the study lounge, but will it get you a job at NASA? Probably not. NASA wants people who have graduated from an accredited engineering program because these programs had to prove their worth. Keep reading to learn the difference between accredited and non-accredited degree programs.

What Is Program Accreditation?

To become accredited, a program has to prove that it meets or exceeds the industry standard. For most fields, there are one or several organizations of seasoned professionals who create these quality measurements. For example, if you did want to study engineering, you’d want a program that was accredited by ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). This board examines not only the program curriculum, but also the quality of learning you’ll receive in your course of study.

Important Facts About Accredited Degree Programs

Associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees available

Varies, depending upon intended institution of enrollment; associate and bachelor degree programs typically require a high school diploma, or equivalent

Types of Accreditation

Regional (traditional universities) and national (usually career and technical schools)

Management analyst, teacher, web developer, art director, engineer, surveyor, database administrator, technical writer, compliance officer

Downfalls of Non-Accredited Programs

Non-accredited programs might not help you meet your advanced education or career goals. Some graduate programs won’t allow you to apply unless you have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited program, so if you choose a non-accredited program for undergraduate studies, you’ll have to start all over. Depending on your career choice and geographic area, you might need to prove that you graduated from an accredited program to apply for a license to work in your profession. The same is true for some certification programs.

How to Find Accredited Programs

You have a couple options when looking for program accreditation. You can find a school that interests you and search their website for accreditation info, but this may require patience. Some schools place all of their accreditation on a general page, while others list them under individual departments.

Another route is to locate the professional organizations that accredit programs you’re interested in and see which schools have programs accredited by them. Many of these organizations also list programs that have applied and are being considered for accreditation, as well as those that have had their accreditation revoked or suspended. If you need to attend an accredited program, make sure the program you’re interested in is accredited, not just the institution – although you may wish to check whether the institution is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency as well.

When Non-accredited Programs Can Help

If you are determined to get your bachelor’s degree in an esoteric field like architectural gingerbread appreciation, you probably won’t find a professional standards organization to accredit a program. Schools generally can’t apply for program accreditation until at least one student has acquired a degree, so if you want to attend a school that’s otherwise reputable and is beginning a new program, you can actually help them with the process. If you already have a career or don’t need the degree for immediate career purposes, a non-accredited program can still be a personal educational experience.

    Accredited life experience degrees

    (Master’s)

  • Educational Leadership & Administration

    Accredited life experience degrees

My friend claims he earned his college degree—a life experience degree—by “testing out of” courses and putting together a portfolio of his work and military training over the last two decades. Do real accredited universities ever offer life experience degrees? Aren’t all universities that offer these types of degrees a scam?

Yes! But be careful. Input “life or work experience degrees from accredited universities” into any search engine and you’ll be swamped with hundreds of websites that promise to review your resume and convert your experience credentials and training into a college diploma.

    Real Accredited Universities or Scams?

Many of these websites are indeed scams, and the diplomas they promise are, in fact, fake. Most of these universities are “accredited,” BUT by fake agencies.

    University Credit Through “Competency Exams”

Capella University was approved by The U.S. Department of Education to offer an innovative “FlexPath” direct-assessment program in August 2013 making Capella one of the first schools to offer competency-based bachelor’s and master’s degree programs that utilize an approved direct-assessment learning model.

Connecticut-based Charter Oak State College is another online university that offers a wealth of opportunity for adult students who want to accelerate their education using challenge exams, military training and specialized business training programs.

Life Experience Master’s / MBA Degree

You didn’t say what kind of degree your friend earned. Most credit-for-experience programs apply only to undergraduate degrees—associate’s or bachelor’s. It is extremely rare for accredited online master’s degree programs in the U.S. to award ANY credits for experience.

    MBA – Business Intelligence

    MBA – General Business Administration

MBA – Global Operations and Supply Chain Management

    MBA – Health Care Management

    MBA – Human Resource Management

    MBA – Project Management

MS – General Information Systems & Technology Management

    MS – Project Management

Vicky Phillips was cited in 2009 by US News & World Report as “for 20 years the leading consumer advocate for online college students.” In 1989 she designed America’s first online counseling center for distance learners on AOL. In 1998 she authored the first print guide to online graduate degrees, Best Distance Learning Graduate Schools put out by the Princeton Review. Students interested in graduate school should know that jobs that require a graduate degree in art are mostly in the museum and education fields.

A student with an online masters degree in art can become an art instructor in higher education, an art historian or a curator in a museum. To become an art professor or museum director, students should pursue an advanced degree.

Some careers graduates can choose from include:

    • Art Directors: Art directors work with creative departments and clients to develop the visual style of films, magazines, newspapers and products. The median annual wage for this profession is approximately $80,600. By 2020, this field is expected to grow by 9 percent as less directors are needed for print publications and more are needed for digital media and graphic design firms.
    • Museum Curators: Museum curators acquire, store, trade and display large collections of art and historic artifacts. The median annual salary is roughly $42,300. Over the next ten years, this field will grow by 25 percent since museum attendance is expected to grow and more curators will be needed to coordinate renovation and restoration projects.
    • Post-secondary Art Teachers: Postsecondary art teachers teach a variety of artistic disciplines – including drama, music and graphic design – to college students. The median annual salary for this profession is approximately $62,300. Over the next decade, this field is expected to grow between 10 and 19 percent, as postsecondary enrollment is expected to increase and more aspiring artists turn to a formal education to further train in their craft.

Find The Best Nursing Schools in Florida For Your Education Needs!

Accredited Nursing schools in Florida are the best place to start a successful career in the Florida health care field. While many college graduates fail to find jobs after school, the majority of students who attend quality Florida nursing schools have no problems finding work immediately out of college. The need for nurses is especially evident in Florida, which has a growing and aging population.

It doesn t matter if you are a high school senior or someone who s looking to get into nursing later in life, the route to becoming a nurse is pretty straightforward. The first thing you need is a high school diploma or GED. Depending on which type of Florida nursing program you are looking to attend, you might also need to take the ACT s or SAT s before entering the institution. Tips for getting into a Nursing School in Florida

As of today, Florida is going though an unusual conundrum in terms of filling the void in available nurses. While the demand for all health professionals is quite high, top nursing schools in Florida regularly turn away almost half of those who apply since space for students is limited. With such limited space in many Florida nursing schools it s important to do the right things to be accepted into your school or program of choice. These things include; having a high SAT or ACT score, having a high GPA in high school or your first two years of college, and taking appropriate courses like science, English and biology. Some nursing schools in Florida may have particular requirements, so it’s in the students’ best interest to find them out early so they can be the best prepared.

How much do Nursing Schools in Florida cost?

Once a student has been accepted into a Florida nursing program, the next step in the process is to cover the costs of attending that particular institution. While the costs do vary from one school to the next, generally speaking the annual cost of tuition ranges from $6,000 to $10,000. This assumes that the student is located in-state and is not caring for a family.

Of course there are ways to help offset the costs of tuition, most notably by work, loans, or scholarships and grants. For those interested in becoming a nurse, they should check out all options in financing that will best suite their needs. Qualifying for scholarships is probably the best method as the money does not have to be paid back and the student can focus on completing the courses without worrying about handling an outside job.

Florida Nursing School Alternatives Online Education

For those who may be stuck at home, another way to earn a nursing degree is by taking online courses. More and more universities offer their courses online and many nationally accredited online schools exist. There are obvious benefits to completing an online degree, but its best if the student takes courses from a university within the state of Florida if possible. The major benefit of getting your degree from within the state is that students can take advantage of the placement program, which gives them an inside advantage in getting a desirable position right out of school.

In conclusion, the combination of job placement programs and the high need for nurses over the next decade makes choosing a career as a Florida nurse a smart and lucrative decision. Attending one of the many accredited nursing schools in Florida can give job seekers a marked advantage when searching for in-state nursing positions.

There are approximately 70-80 students taking HIM classes or prerequisite courses to gain admission to the program.

    Clinical Requirement Onsite:

    Cheap Accredited Online Colleges

If you would like to complete your degree or learn the skills necessary to change careers, but you do not have time to attend a traditional college or university, you may be considering online learning. If so, you are in good company: according to a survey by the Sloan Consortium, more than 3.9 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2007 term. You have a wide array of options for obtaining an online degree from an accredited college or university, some more affordable than others.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. If you do not attend an accredited institution, employers may not accept your degree, it may be difficult to transfer to another institution and you cannot receive federal student aid.

The tuition rates cited are current as of June 2010, and do not include fees, which vary significantly among schools and programs. For comparison, the College Board reports the following average full-time (12 credit hours per term) undergraduate tuition and fees rates: $7,020 for in-state students at public four-year colleges ($18,548 for out-of-state students), $14,174 at for-profit colleges and $26,273 at private not-for-profit four-year colleges.

Founded in 1997 by a group of 19 governors, WGU features a nontraditional program and fee structure. A student pays tuition of $2,890 to $4,250 (depending on the program) for a six-month term, and may complete as much coursework as he is able to within that term. WGU offers bachelor s and master s degrees, with an emphasis on business, education and health professions. The university says its principal mission is providing competency-based degrees and other credentials that are credible to both academic institutions and employers. http://www.wgu.edu/

APU and its partner school, American Military University, offer associate, bachelor s, and master s degrees as well as certificates in more than 70 programs. The Sloan Consortium awarded the Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education to APU in 2009, And its tuition rates are inexpensive: undergraduate students pay only $250 per credit hour, and graduate students pay $300 per credit hour.

The New York State Board of Regents founded Excelsior College in 1971. Excelsior specializes in degree completion programs, and students can obtain an associate, bachelor s, or master s degree or a certificate. Students can earn credit in many ways: completing coursework, challenging a course through credit by exam, experiential learning, a portfolio assessment and military training. Of Excelsior s more than 33,000 students, about one-fourth are active duty or reserve military. Students at Excelsior pay $335 per credit hour (undergraduate students) to $455 per credit hour (graduate students). https://www.excelsior.edu/

One of the pioneers in distance education, UMUC has received numerous awards and recognition over the years from the Sloan Consortium, the International Council for Open and Distance Education, the National Security Agency, the Department of Homeland Security and the Maryland Distance Learning Association. Besides taking coursework, students can also earn credit for a portfolio of learning experiences or for credit by exam. UMUC offers bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees, and certificate programs. UMUC is most affordable for state residents and members of the military.

Undergraduate tuition rates range from $237 per credit hour (Maryland residents and military) to $499 per credit hour (nonresidents). Graduate and teacher certification students pay from $445 per credit hour (Maryland residents and military) to $659 per hour (nonresidents).
