New Zealand Adventure Tours

We challenge you to find a country that packs more untouched, dramatic and diverse scenery into a smaller space than New Zealand. The light here is different somehow, making the fiords, glaciers, rainforest, volcanoes, beech forests and rugged coastlines crisper, brighter and a bit more intense than you’d ever expect.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by some of the best scenery on the planet with few signs of civilisation and no one else around. As an independent nation that lies across the Tasman Sea from Australia, New Zealand is home to only four and a half million people. About a third of them reside in Auckland city and the rest are spread out around two main islands, which together are about half the size of California, leaving vast tracts nearly uninhabited. It’s no wonder a lot of visitors find it hard to leave!

Kiwis are warm, resourceful and as friendly as they come. They’ll charm you with their accent, wave as you pass by on a country road and often stop for a chat. With no snakes, land predators like big cats or bears, or any other nasty critters to bite you on the trail, New Zealand is a haven for hikers. We have, however, got plenty of lambs frolicking in the paddocks, Tui birds calling in the forests and fur seals lazing in the sun on the rocky shores.

With a very extensive network of hiking and biking trails and almost 1000 backcountry huts. the options for exploring our wilderness can be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve spent years ‘tramping’ (the Kiwi term for hiking) in the mountains, biking the trails and paddling the calm waters to hand pick the best. Some spots, such as the Milford Track. are deservedly world renowned, while other amazing locations are virtually undiscovered. Off the trail, our towns are charming and unique and since Kiwis love their creature comforts, you’ll never be too far from a beautifully made cup of coffee. Sweet as!

Why Travel with Active Adventures New Zealand?

We’ve been doing this a while and we are New Zealand’s most experienced and trusted adventure tour operator.

You can be rest assured that when you book a New Zealand vacation package with us, you’re going to experience the real NZ. We’re passionate about sharing our backyard with you!

Don’t take our word for it, read some of our New Zealand trip reviews. Our emphasis is on exceeding your expectations and we never rest on our laurels. Ever.

Responsible travel, Responsible tourism, Eco tourism, Adventure holidays – Imaginative Traveller

    #responsible travel
    #

    Responsible Travel

    Our Policy

Responsible tourism is at the heart of Imaginative Traveller. For 20 years we have taken customers to places around the world in social and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring everyone involved respects and maintains the natural and often delicate balance of the destination.

As travellers ourselves we are well aware of the impact that tourism can have and whilst economic gain from tourism is often fundamental to a country, it should never be at the expense of its culture or the environment. It is our aim to provide journeys that have minimal negative and maximum positive impact on the places we visit. We do not believe that, as visitors, we should impose our own cultures on others; rather that we should experience foreign cultures and appreciate them for what they are.

We believe giving something back is essential. We therefore work with our customers and the people we visit to ensure the benefits go directly to contribute to local cultures and environmental conservation. This is not only good the communities we visit but it also gives our travellers more enriched adventures.

    What we do

    Supporting and involving local people

    • We recruit and involve local people wherever possible.
    • We support and prefer to work directly with local businesses, services and individuals.
    • Our supplies and equipment are purchased locally wherever possible.
    • We aim to work and treat the traveller, local communities and businesses in a fair and just manner.
    • We aim to work with partners who operate their own local initiatives.
    • Small, family-run establishments make up a high percentage of the accommodation we use.
    • Where it is practical but not intrusive we stay as guests of local families.

    Support ClimateCare

To help fund by donating to ClimateCare projects or to find out more about ClimateCare’s low carbon technology projects visit their website at www.climatecare.org

    The Rainforest Alliance

Imaginative Traveller has recently signed a contract with the Rainforest Alliance to work on responsible tourism practices with our Latin America suppliers.

The Rainforest Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation that works to conserve the environment and promote sustainable and ethical practices in a number of different industries across the World. One of the industries they are working in is tourism throughout Latin America.

They provide training and technical assistance to help local operators and hotels implement best practices and encourage them to seek certification from one of the organisations part of the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas.

We have signed up to work with them to encourage and motivate our local suppliers. Some of our local operators are already working with the Rainforest Alliance and in this instance our contract with them is simply reinforcing our commitment to responsible travel and demonstrating that it is of the utmost importance to us. For those operators who have not yet agreed to work with them; they will be contacted and encouraged to work on sustainable tourism practices. The aim is that at least 50% of our local partners will sign up but preferably more! The Rainforest Alliance will then also work through them with local hotels/lodges, effectively greening through the supply chain .

We are very pleased to work with the Rainforest Alliance and further demonstrate our longstanding commitment to sustainable tourism. We hope that this will allow us to do even more in Latin America and help responsible travel become an even more accepted and practiced means of holidaying.

If you would like to know more about Rainforest Alliance please visit their website www.rainforest-alliance.org

    The Travel Foundation

The Travel Foundation are an independent UK charity working to promote

sustainable tourism throughout the travel industry. They aim to encourage

understanding of responsible travel and also work on their own community

    and environmental initiatives worldwide.

Imaginative Traveller is demonstrating our support for the charity by working with them on a number of their worldwide projects. We are currently enlisting the help of our local suppliers and ground handlers in East Africa, Morocco and Sri Lanka to support some of the many initiatives the charity has in place. You will find details of the projects within our tour trip notes.

If you would like to know more about The Travel Foundation or would like to make a donation in support of their work please visit their website www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk

FAQs about overseas and domestic adventure tours – Classic Journeys #best

    #single travel groups
    #

    Find my Classic Journey

Solo vacations in the best of companies

Classic Journeys welcomes solo travel on all of our tours. In fact, on average about a third of our guests travel on their own. If your goal is to experience the life and culture of the places you visit, you re already one of us and you ll find yourself in the congenial company of others who look at the world like you do.

Let s get that single supplement out of the way.

Admit it. Once you find the perfect trip, you ve learned that you can t get emotionally involved until you check out the single supplement. Then here s the best news! To encourage solo travel, tours from Classic Journeys have the lowest single supplements you re likely to find anywhere. While some companies boost prices up to 50% for single travelers, we keep it to just 15% on average. We only pass along the extra cost hotels charge us, instead of marking it up to make extra profit from you.

For starters, you already have a friend on tour. Our local guides are with you full time to watch out for everyone s needs and interests. At the fine restaurants we select, you won t find yourself at a table for one. And, as often as possible, the accommodations we arrange for you are doubles for single use so that you can have as much elbow room as everyone else. Of course, at your request, we ll invite another solo traveler on the tour to share accommodations with you.

Join us for a one-of-a-kind tour.

If you re planning a solo vacation of your own (but don t see yourself on a singles vacation ), give us a call. We ll be happy to give you one-to-one answers about the tour you re considering.

New and renewing ATTA members must agree to strive towards the same values as set forth in ATTA’s Values Statement. These Values were created to ensure members of the ATTA community put effort towards nurturing, protecting and professionalizing the sustainable development of the adventure travel industry.

    Dear ATTA Members,

It is with much anticipation that we share the following exciting news with you. Over the past nine years the ATTA network has grown from around 100 members to nearly 900 today. Over the years there has been much discussion about what it takes to be a member. The ATTA started as primarily a business network — a place to meet potential business partners and to learn. What has happened in the past near-decade has been remarkable as the association became more of a tribe, with many shared values and a seemingly overarching desire by all to do well by doing good. The ATTA has always held this as the ultimate success goal: to be an association of successful organizations who do not succeed by abusing everything and everyone around them but instead to be an environment of responsibility, of care-taking, of stewardship. With this in mind, we ve determined that as we face more growth in the coming years and more awareness in the larger tourism industry, it is critical that we lay out what we believe are the key values of our organization as a whole. Let me be clear, we are not telling anyone what they must do — we are not the holders of moral high ground — but we have come to the conclusion that stated values are acted-upon values. We also know that no organization has reached perfection (when you do, please write) and that we are all on a course toward doing better.

With that, we release the ATTA Values Statement, created by the team, informed by the UNWTO, refined by the advisory board and finalized into its current form. We have always desired to change the world for good and this is one way we will take a step to try and achieve it. Exodus

    Other Partners

Walking Trekking Holidays – Exodus offer over 150 of the worlds greatest walks and treks from around the globe. Some trips are wholly trekking-focused whilst others may simply contain a significant portion of walking days within the itinerary. All trips are graded and we cater for a wide range of abilities: you can stroll from the comfort of your hotel along the Amalfi Coast, challenge yourself on the Inca Trail or attempt a high-altitude ascent on Kilimanjaro. It is essential that you carefully read the brochure text and accompanying Trip Notes as good fitness and stamina are required for some of the more demanding itineraries.

Cycling Holidays – One world, two wheels. Our cycling holidays come in all shapes and sizes; from gently cycling in the Dordogne region of France, tackling the High Atlas in Morocco on a fully-supported mountain bike expedition, exploring the length of Vietnam or getting under the skin of the unique culture and cuisine of South East Asia. All trips are graded, with the percentage of on and off-road riding, and vehicle support indicated in the trip profile. As with an Exodus walking holiday, you need to ensure that you are confident in your own fitness to join some of these departures.

Culture – The names of many of the world s greatest cultural sites are well known to most – Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, the cities of Roma or Prague. But other sites are equally inspiring, if a little less well known and in some cases a little less accessible. The Terracotta Warriors in Xi an, China, the great monasteries of Lhasa, Tibet, and the amazing Roman ruins of Leptis Magna in Libya are some of the finest sites on earth. There are too many to name, but from the great museums of Florence, to the hidden city of Petra and the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat, Exodus will show you a different side to many of the world s greatest cultural attractions.

Wildlife Safari Holidays – The majority of our wildlife holidays are African safaris, although there are many variations on the theme; walking safaris, special safari skills courses and classic camping safaris all feature. In Asia enjoy the fantastic spectacle of tiger watching in India, elephant back safaris in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, and the orang-utans and wildlife of Borneo. The whales and penguins of Antarctica and Polar bears in the Arctic are fabulous. In the Americas we ll see the sloths and river dolphins of Peru s Tambopata Reserve, and view the numerous endemic species of the enchanted Galapagos Islands by boat. There is so much to see and experience. Trips in this category may be wholly wildlife focused, or contain an element of wildlife viewing within a less specific itinerary.

Wilderness – The worlds greatest wildernesses areas are accessible with Exodus. The deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents can be visited by the adventurous traveller. In these destinations, as with all the places we visit, we take great care not to damage the fragile ecosystems, as, by their nature, they are not designed for human habitation. We can take you to the Sahara, Atacama, Namib and Gobi deserts, the jungles of South and Central America, as well as Northern India and Central Africa, or the great mountain ranges of The Andes, Alps, Atlas, Himalaya and Rockies. Perhaps the most remote places we visit are the Tibetan plateau, the Antarctic and the Outback of Australia.

Polar Expeditions – At the ends of the earth and far from the madding crowd, the Polar Regions are perhaps the last pristine wildernesses left on the planet. They re harsh, merciless environments of savage, eye-watering beauty. How times have changed for the Polar adventurer? These days we can explore the frozen continents in relative comfort and safety and return to our homes within 2 weeks, unlike Ernest Shackleton and his crew who took 2 years to escape it s icy clutches after their ship was crushed in 1915. Of course, in keeping with our philosophy, it is essential that we protect these environments and in partnership with the ships operators apply the most stringent rules of minimum impact travel.

Premium Adventures – A large selection of great Exodus adventures with a little extra style and comfort, in locations around Europe, Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas.

Solo Holidays – For those clients who wish to travel with a group of other solo travellers, on certain trips we have set aside departure dates that are recommended for clients booking individually.

Solo departures are aimed at taking away that concern that you may be the only solo traveller when you arrive overseas.

Relaxed Itinerary – While at Exodus we enjoy our fair share of adventure and excitement, we also know that gentler pursuits and a healthy dose of laid-back discovery can be just as appealing. Our Relaxed Itinerary departures, including trips from last years Leisurely Collection brochure, allow just that. You can now enjoy an adventure in your preferred destination or seek out intriguing and off-the-beaten-path trips at a more relaxed pace. Go on – discover the world in a little extra comfort!

Multi Activity Holidays – These trips fall into two categories, they are either designed to include the major highlights of the countries or regions we visit, involving a mix of activities en route, or are solely activity based itineraries providing numerous opportunities for thrill seekers to try out new and exciting sports. Activities may range from the ordinary (for example walking or cycling, canoeing or white water rafting) to the damn right extra-ordinary (including caving, rock climbing, camel riding or canyoning)! As specialist skills are required for some of these trips, but certainly not all, you should read the brochure text and accompanying trip notes carefully.

Cruise (Expedition Voyages, Galapagos, River Nile) Holidays – These holidays can feature expedition voyages onboard ice class vessels to the Polar regions, travelling down the River Nile on a river boat, sailing in the Arctic (Greenland) on a Schooner, or around the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) in a yacht to name a few. They have excellent facilities and great wildlife viewing opportunities and always in small groups, as opposed to the Cruise Liners that roam the great oceans.

1-All swans in England are the property of the queen or king.

2-The 13th century tower of St. Peter s Church in Zurich, Switzerland has the largest clock face in Europe. The record-breaking clock face 28 1/2 feet in diameter and the minute hand alone is almost 12 feet long.

4-80 to 90 percent of Europe was once covered in forest, but this has been reduced to 3 percent in Western Europe. Some rainforests in parts of the Caucasus and Oak forests in the Mediterranean regions still remain untouched- an unbelievable fact, considering the rapid deforestation that Europe has seen over the years.

Ever.

What Are The Best Adventure Travel Companies and Tours

Adventure Travel For The Audacious Spirit Travel ing  is food for the wandering soul, and those with an audacious spirit, and while there are many adventure travel and tour operator companies around, choosing the best one is going to depend very much on what you want to do, and where you want to go. However, there are various well established and reputable companies around, and below we mention some of them, and the kinds of tours and trips on offer. Some points to keep in mind when choosing a tour, are that these will normally be group tours, although some companies also offer itineraries for the solo traveler. Also, adventure trips will often be categorized by difficulty and comfort levels, so this may be something else to consider when making a choice. All in all, it can be very pleasant to travel in a group, and have some of the burdensome tasks taken over by someone else  such as carrying the baggage and arranging for nightly accommodation so that you can concentrate on enjoying the trip. Contrarily, some might consider that these tasks including navigating to your next destination are part of what makes it an adventure . The idea of traveling for adventure is not exactly new. Ever since regular tourist spots have been destinations for travelers, there have been those who have made it a point to avoid them, and take their own path. As the concept of this kind travel became more popular, more free spirits became enamored  with the idea of travel ing the road less taken.

3 Top Adventure Travel Companies To Consider

Gadventures.com This well known company offers trips to most parts of the world, including polar regions. There website divides tours up into the usual destinations , but also into Travel Styles as opposed to the usual Activities . These styles of travel include 1. Classic This is somewhere between a group tour and independent backpacking. 2. Comfort This includes some extra frills like dining in nice restaurants. 3.  Active Which includes hiking, biking, and multisport. 4. Yolo for young budget conscious travelers. 5. Marine , which covers various varieties of  boat travel from nature-oriented adventures, to sailing trips. 6. Family trips which include a combination of adventure and education. 7. Local Living , where you stay in one place for the main part of your trip such as a family home or converted farmhouse plus some scheduled activities which you can go to or not. 8. Rail , for those who enjoy traveling by train, they have scenic rail trips where you sleep on the train and can save on hotel costs. Although Gadventures doesn t have the traditional activity selector, they have a great search page ( www.gadventures.com/search ) which lets you search for your trip by various criteria like activity , travel style , destination , budget , and duration , making it a lot easier to find your ideal trip.

Rei Another top travel company, Rei is also a huge outdoor store, selling travel related products online. Their trips can be as short as a weekend up to several weeks in length. Latest News from Adventure Life

Visiting Antarctica is not only a possibility these days, but it is becoming a highly desirable destination for adventurous travelers. This upcoming season, it is predicted that 37,000 tourists will make the journey to the Great White Continent. The accessibility and popularity of Antarctica tours brings up the question, “Is this responsible travel?” This concern is discussed in a recent BBC News Magazine article, and the conclusion is that carefully managed tourism is not only acceptable, but it is useful to the conservation of Antarctica. The author states, “Without a native population of its own, Antarctica needs advocates and tourism creates a global constituency of people ready to support and indeed fund its preservation.” Of course, strict regulations of the Antarctic Treaty enforced by IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators), International Maritime Organisation, and other groups are necessary for this ideal scenario to remain true. Following last year’s announcement to build a tram to the ruins of Choquequirao, the government of Peru has announced plans for a second tram to the ancient Chachapoyas fortress of Kuelap. To see these remote ruins in their current, barely visited state before the trams are built, book Adventure Life’s Chachapoyas Discovery trip or the Choquequirao Trek. It is anticipated that by the end of 2015, the first aerial tramway in Peru will be built to the remote Inca ruins of Choquequirao. What, to-date, has been a several day trek on sometimes steep terrain would now be accessed in a matter of minutes from the comfort of a cable car. This historic sister-city to Machu Picchu that currently gets just a handful of hikers each week could see 3,000 visitors per day. Now, another remote ruins site in Peru is slated to get a cable car.  A Peruvian Times article explained that a [. ]

Adventure Life has made the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America for the third time. The Inc. 5000 list for 2014 ranked Adventure Life as #4 for “Top Montana Companies,” as well as recognized the 59% growth of the company since 2010. Only a tiny fraction of companies in the United States have demonstrated such remarkably consistent growth, particularly in the challenging economic environment of recent years. Annually, Inc. 5000 recognizes companies that continue to overcome trials and succeed despite them. This achievement makes Adventure Life a rarefied company. “We are absolutely honored to receive this recognition from Inc. 5000,” said general manager Jonathan Brunger. “Our company feels like this is an accolade that reflects our product and service, and we feel fortunate to be a part of a successful, growing company.” To explore the world with Adventure Life, visit http://www.adventure-life.com or call 800-344-6118.

Travel + Leisure realizes the challenges of seeking trip advice from professionals with the exact expertise needed for a particular destination. Therefore, this A-List is compiled annually to give travelers a guide for finding the ideal adviser. Welcome to Costa Rica Travel

Costa Rica is a beautiful exotic country located in Central America. Costa Rica is well known for its ecotourism, and the rainforests are perfect for backpackers. Once you seen enough, (or if you are not into backpacking in the rainforests) traveling through the tourist spots and the country is just as exciting and interesting.

Ecotourism travel is about adventure in the wilderness and learning about the local cultures. It is the destinations of travel where the attraction is nature and the cultural heritage of the region.

Ecotourism travel is very beneficial to both the traveler and ecological environments. An ecotourist learns about awesome natural environments, and helps to support conservation efforts.

Costa Rica is a popular country for ecotourism travel. Every year about half-and-million people travel to Costa Rica. Also about 27% of Costa Rica is nature reserves, national parks, and protected rainforests.

Now even though I have done several things within my travel at Costa Rica, this website is about my account of a backpacking travel into cloud forest that I have experienced for 5 days. This website was created with what I have documented while backpacking, and basic advice and information I have included.

Costa Rica Travel. Quick description of Costa Rica

In the ecotourism tours you can see many mountains, waterfalls, rivers, beaches, and plenty of exotic animal and plant life. Costa Rica is a habitat for over 1059 different types of animals and 10,000 different types of plant life. There is also about 3000 different species of butterflies. Overall Costa Rica contains about five percent of the world’s animal and plant species

The native people in Costa Rica are called Ticos and are usually very friendly. It is really one of the best places to go for an tropical vacation. It’s a spanish speaking country’s though, so make sure to brush up on your spanish before you go!

Even if you’re not an experienced backpacker, you can enjoy Cloud Forest by utilizing the services of tour guides or using the suspension bridges in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve to enjoy the natural beauty without disturbing the ecosystem. To combine your enjoyment of Cloud Forest – or any part of Costa Rica – with some comfort on your vacation, take advantage of timeshare rental throughout the country. Many owners looking to sell timeshares decide to rent their units while searching for appropriate buyers, meaning you can get great deals on spacious accommodations and save hundreds off the cost of hotels.

FAQs about overseas and domestic adventure tours – Classic Journeys #find

    South Africa Tours & Trips

It’s called the Rainbow Nation – not just cos the sun’s shinin’ down here, but cos of all the awesome African and European cultures.

Travel to South Africa to see the place that shaped one of the world’s most respected men – Nelson Mandela.

On a Geckos tour of South Africa you’ll get close to formidable predators on game drives in Kruger National Park, be a part of the café set in Cape Town, chill out in multicultural Durban, take in gasp-worthy views at Blyde River Canyon and swim, surf and cycle the Wild Coast.

From the bushveld dominated by the animal kingdom to villages owned by small but strong communities, and complex cities that humanity has claimed solely for itself, South Africa is a complicated equation best worked through with patience and a smile.

A land of extremes, dedicate some time to getting to know South Africa, and you’ll be paid back with travel memories that will keep you grinning for years to come. People will wonder why you’re smiling weirdly to yourself and you’ll have South Africa to thank for it.

Just don’t do it in job interviews.

How This Private Aviation Startup Found Its Niche in the Luxury Market

    August 27, 2010

It all started with a passion and a curiosity for Italy. In search of her Italian roots and gorgeous roads to ride, Lauren Hefferon s year-long Rotary scholarship to Italy evolved into a three-year cultural immersion, which included hanging out at Mario Conti s bike shop in Florence (and learning the local dialect), racing for his team and exploring every road of Tuscany with her new network of Italian cycling friends.

That s how Hefferon started Ciclismo Classico. a cycling tour company that brings in $3.5 million a year.

I found a niche that I knew very well, and knew that I wanted to be in business for myself, so I made the leap, Hefferon said.

Adventure tourism may not be incredibly lucrative, but the industry provides an inviting environment for entrepreneurs. Passion is key to cultivating a successful adventure tourism business; Hefferon is overflowing with it.

Adventure travel engages our bodies, mind and spirit all at the same time, Hefferon said. It fills you up, makes you whole again.

The adventure travel industry has been on the rise, according to a 2010 survey by the Adventure Travel Trade Association. a global network of more than 550 adventure tourism companies. Of the 300 companies that responded to the ATTA survey, 70 percent were looking to grow this year.

Overall, the adventure tourism industry is expected to reach $52 billion in 2010 in terms of outbound travel from North and South America and Europe, according to the ATTA. While most adventure travel businesses are small operations that bring in less than $1 million each year, about 20 percent of respondents to the ATTA survey have revenue of $1 million to $5 million a year. Frontiers Travel. established in 1969, boasts $30 million per year.

However, because of an operating margin between 9 percent and 11 percent, adventure tourism is not an industry that will bring in large sums of money, Frontiers co-owner Mollie Fitzgerald says. Instead, she emphasizes the psychic income side of running a travel business, which includes a love of travel.

The opportunity to travel, the things that you learn about, the experiences I ve had certainly outweigh the financial side of the business, Fitzgerald says.

An analysis of the last decade could be enough to scare off many entrepreneurs before they jump into the travel industry. Fitzgerald, who joined Frontiers full time in 1985, listed some of the most recent deterrents to travel: the Gulf War, 9/11, SARS, foot-and-mouth disease in Europe and acts of terrorism. But she has observed cycles in the industry during the 40 years Frontiers has been in business.

I think travel has become an essential ingredient in people s lives, and (the travel industry) does bounce back. It always does, Fitzgerald says. We ve seen enough peaks and valleys over the years that I m confident in saying that.

As the economy stabilizes, adventure travel is indeed swelling. Some companies anticipate as much as a 35 percent increase in bookings this year over 2009, according to a report from the Adventure Collection. a group of 10 adventure travel businesses.

As the number of travelers grows, the number of destinations has the potential to increase, as well. Xola Consulting Inc. established in 2004, works with governments to develop their countries as adventure travel destinations, which stimulates economic growth in those areas. Christina Heyniger, president of Xola, worked with the ATTA and The George Washington University to produce the Adventure Tourism Development Index. The index provides information about a country s potential to succeed as an adventure tourism destination by analyzing 10 Pillars, which include safety and security, tourism infrastructure, cultural resources, adventure activity resources and health.

Hefferon took the importance of location to heart when she founded Ciclismo Classico in 1988. She was the first to specialize in cycling tours of Italy, and Ciclismo Classico still offers many tours to places no other tour company goes. Hefferon led eight women on Ciclismo Classico s first tour, called Tuscany and the Enchanting Island of Elba. At that time, many tours were taking travelers to Tuscany, so Hefferon included Elba to add an exotic element to her tour.

Adventure tourism thrives on specialization. In the early 1970s, Mike and Susie Fitzgerald, who founded Frontiers, decided to concentrate on a few unique locales. They were among the first to offer salmon fishing in Iceland and photographic safaris to southern Africa. Frontiers also differentiates itself from other travel companies through its network of destination experts within the company. For instance, one team takes care of all the Atlantic salmon fishing, while another team focuses on saltwater fishing.

No one is protective; no one s earning commission or afraid to share their clients with their colleagues, says Mollie Fitzgerald, Mike and Susie s daughter.

Building a strong clientele within Frontiers led to requests for non-sporting trips, such as wine-tasting in Italy after a fishing trip in Iceland. Eventually, Frontiers hired a person to focus on luxury trips, and the company established a division called Elegant Journeys in 1983. Diversification, in terms of both destinations and services, gave Frontiers the opportunity to flourish.

We ve been a lot of places–I would say probably more than most travel agencies–collectively, Fitzgerald says. It s that collective body of experience that I think gives us a good advantage.

Another important way to grow an adventure travel business is through online marketing, social networking and search engine optimization. Hefferon has developed a strong social networking presence for Ciclismo Classico, allowing the company to connect with more than 4,000 people on Facebook. To garner even more Facebook fans, Ciclismo Classico will randomly select one person for a free trip once the page reaches 5,000 fans, and Heffron also has a personal blog .

Other successful adventure travel companies, like Adventure Life. have high-traffic blogs and 20,000-plus Facebook fans. Adventure Life specializes in small group adventures to Latin America. A few years ago, Xola s Heyniger heard about a man offering trail-running trips through his website, AdventureRunningCo.com. The company s name in itself increased its presence on search engines such as Google.

It s one of my favorite examples of why you need niche marketing, Heyniger said. They re making it because they re building up a database of people who love to run and who think this would be an awesome trip.

Starting an adventure travel business means a tour operator is going to face unanticipated challenges, which presents an irony of sorts. Consultant Heyniger has noticed that many adventure travel entrepreneurs are looking to escape from government and policy, but they end up getting pulled back in. Heyniger illustrates the situation this way: A man starts a rafting business in Idaho, then discovers that the Salmon River is being polluted by unregulated dumping. He begins lobbying for better regulation while still trying to build his business and client base. Choosing an area where policies can be influenced can determine whether a business expands or dies; some countries are not as open as others to modifying regulations.

Another essential element of adventure tourism is the impact locals have on travel experiences. Guides for Ciclismo Classico are locals who have tremendous passion, Hefferon says. For 30 years, Frontiers has been working with the same driver, a one-man operation, in the United Kingdom.

Those are the kinds of people that can really make experiences come alive for a client, Fitzgerald says.

And when experiences come alive for clients, adventure travel businesses will thrive.

Costa Rica Travel – My Costa Rica Adventure Travel #travel #tour

    How Adventure Travel Works

    Up Next

Imagine yourself paddling a kayak through the dense belly of the Amazon rainforest. Can you picture walking side by side with the mighty elephants of Africa. Maybe a bike trek along the Great Wall of China or a cattle drive through Patagonia is more your speed. How does traveling into outer space sound? If any of these wild trips sound like a great way to spend your holiday, then adventure travel may be for you.

One of the fastest-growing trends in the travel business is adventure tourism. Defining exactly what it means is a little tricky. For some, adventure could mean leisurely biking and hiking tours. For others, it might entail BASE jumping into an underground cave in Mexico. The main facets of adventure tourism usually include traveling to a distant location, interacting with different cultures and undertaking a physical activity of some kind.

Adventure travel is typically grouped into two categories — hard and soft adventures. Hard adventures involve some kind of extreme and often dangerous sporting activity. Paragliding, rock climbing, surfing. spelunking and scuba diving in remote and exotic locations are some examples of a hard adventure. Soft adventures are leisurely, often educational and don’t involve hazardous and strenuous adventures. Culinary and wine tours, bird watching. architectural tours and religious pilgrimages are activities that are likely to be found on a soft adventure.

The father of adventure travel is Leo Le Bon. co-founder of Mountain Tours, the world’s first adventure travel company. In 1967, Le Bon and eight travel mates made the first commercial expedition to the Annapurna region of Nepal and founded their travel company after returning stateside. Now retired from Mountain Tours, Le Bon still consults for various travel entities through his aptly named firm, Wanderlust Consulting. The industry has grown by leaps and bounds since Leo went to Nepal, with thousands of companies offering adventure vacations to every corner of the globe.

In this article, we’ll look at who might be likely to go on an adventure tour and how you could benefit from taking one yourself. We’ll also look at some of the more interesting adventure vacations that are on the market today.

    Vietnam: Adventure Travel in Vietnam

It seems that every article you read about Vietnam is saying the same thing – now is the time to do it. Believe them, they know what they are talking about these journalists – the entire country is buzzing with optimism and if you want to experience the pleasure of travelling through a country whilst it is at its peak, then your search is over.

Many visitors are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country’s natural setting; the stunning hills, mountains and valleys to be explored in the north; the Mekong Delta in the south and the many hundreds of miles of deserted beaches that lie in-between. The majority of adventure tour itineraries allow you to travel the length of the country ensuring you get to enjoy all the amazing beaches, the patchwork of rice paddies to be seen mile after mile in all directions, and to enjoy the abundance of fresh seafood that plays such an important part in the popularity of Vietnamese cuisine – you think it tastes good back home, just wait until you taste the real thing!

Throughout Vietnam there are a multitude of outdoor adventure activities to get involved in. You can cycle the length of the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail, the name given to the many supply routes and trails used by the Viet Cong to deliver arms and supplies to the their troops fighting in the south.

There is rock climbing, kayaking and some outstanding trekking to be enjoyed in the central highlands and in the north of the country around well known locations such as the former colonial hill station of Dalat in the highlands and the outpost of Sapa in the countries far north. Participating in an adventure tour will allow you access to all these activities, give you the opportunity visit and stay in hill tribe villages whilst also including some of the must see attractions and cities to be found throughout the country.

Hanoi is the finest city in Asia right now; it’s THE place to spend a few days. The place is simply bubbling over as the country starts to realize its commercial and tourist potential. Further south there is the former Imperial capital of Hue and the quaint town of Hoi An, both are worth a few days of any traveller’s time.

Vietnam is almost all coastline so, as you’d expect, there are one or two nice beaches to be enjoyed, the better of which are generally further south at destinations such as Phan Thiet, Mui Ne and Nha Trang.  In the north there is the rather special Halong Bay, with over 2000 limestone karsts thrusting out of the turquoise waters – a great location to enjoy some kayaking and to explore some caving.

In the far south of the country there is Ho Chi Minh City, often known as Saigon. Here you will find much evidence of the American occupation during the 60’s and 70’s. Further south still you enter the Mekong Delta and it’s many waterways, here you can explore the point where the mighty Mekong River, originating in China, finally reaches its destination after weaving its way through seven countries.

    #adventure travel company

    About O.A.R.S.

    Our Company: O.A.R.S.

According to George Wendt, O.A.R.S. Founder and President, “My first trip in the Grand Canyon introduced me to a world that I didn’t know existed.”

That adventure trip for George, as one of the first 1200 people to raft the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. fostered a dream of his to share such wild places, as well as preserve and protect them, for future generations. The dream later came to fruition, taking him from his life as a middle school math teacher and onto the world’s waterways—sharing those experiences, directly and indirectly, with nearly a half-million people to date.

After his first Grand Canyon experience, George spent summers taking friends to various rivers in California and the Desert Southwest. Those friends invited other friends. It wasn’t long before strangers began contacting him with requests to join his expeditions. Those trips featured equal parts accessibility, fun rapids, stunning scenery, side canyons to explore and companions with an inquisitive nature. It became clear it was to be his calling to deliver people to the wilderness and to share with them the excitement experienced there.

George’s dream of ‘officially’ taking people down river first came to fruition in 1969. With his friend Ed Gooch, George established Gooch-Wendt Expeditions, running professional trips on the Colorado River. Shortly thereafter, the company was selected as the first exclusively oar-powered rafting operator in Grand Canyon National Park, and was appropriately renamed O.A.R.S. (Outdoor Adventure River Specialists).

In 1972, George and his wife Pam took over full operation of O.A.R.S. and chose to establish the company and their family in the small northern California community of Angels Camp in Calaveras County just miles away from the free-flowing Stanislaus River. Through the early 1980s this stunning Sierra Nevada river became the lifeblood of the newly-formed organization. At the time, O.A.R.S. consistently had passengers for two-day trips, seven days a week on what was then a family-friendly Class III river. However, as the business grew, the spectacular Stanislaus River canyon was lost to a dam. Rather than close the doors in Angels Camp and relocate, the loss of this great run was an impetus to look elsewhere and expand trip offerings.

From early on, O.A.R.S. offered trips on other rivers in various regions throughout the U.S. West, including the Tuolumne. Merced. American and the Klamath rivers in California, the Rogue River in southern Oregon, the Salmon River in Idaho and the Colorado, Green and Yampa rivers in Utah and Colorado. Today, we offer more than 75 unique itineraries, including first-class rafting, sea kayaking and multi-sport trips, throughout Alaska. Arizona. California. Colorado. Idaho. Oregon. Utah. and Wyoming. as well as throughout western Canada. Fiji and Latin America.

In 2006, George’s passion for running rivers, and his unquenchable drive to share the rivers of the world with other adventurers earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Adventure Travel Trade Association for his pioneering efforts in the realms of whitewater rafting, ecotourism, and adventure travel.

Remaining true to George’s original dream, our company is professionally committed to the cultural and environmental well-being of the places we visit and operate. We follow expertly designed on-the-ground practices and seek to create inspirational experiences for guests and students. Our company supports a variety of institutions that further these ideals, including: the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, American Whitewater, Friends of the River, Environmental Defense Fund, Waterkeeper Alliance, the Grand Canyon Trust, Hells Canyon Preservation Council, Idaho Rivers United, Alaska Wilderness League, the International Galapagos Tour Operators Association, the Outdoor Foundation, the International Ecotourism Society and Sustainable Travel International.

In the four decades since O.A.R.S.’ inception, our company has contributed, along with our guests, more than $3 million toward the protection and preservation of the places and communities we visit. Our California headquarters and other operations warehouses run on solar power, and we utilize alternative energy sources such as bio-diesel along with fuel-efficient vehicles and support vessels whenever possible to reduce our carbon footprint.

We are routinely recognized and rewarded throughout the industry for our integrity and ingenuity. National Geographic Adventure magazine recognized our company as “The Best River Sea Outfitter on Earth” multiple times based on education, sustainability, quality of service, spirit of adventure and references. More than 60% of passengers return for additional trips or are referred by past guests each year. National Geographic. Outside. Men’s Journal. Sunset and assorted other magazines routinely recognize O.A.R.S. as serving up some of the “Best Trips on the Planet,” as well as providing the best and friendliest guides and superior customer service.

Although O.A.R.S. has grown to become the most successful and respected rafting and sea kayaking outfitter in North America, our ongoing mission has remained the same: to help people of all ages enjoy the best outdoor experience of their lives.

Let’s Visit Oktoberfest and have Fun

It is still not too late to plan for the largest festival in the planet? the only disadvantage is, it will be difficult for you to find cheap accommodations in Munich area and its surroundings. Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival with over 6 million visitors, both locals and from around the globe.

I believed most of the reasons why so many people are going there is to experience the fun and entertainment during the duration of the celebration. More that, since it is a beer festival, tasting and drinking beers that are only brewed by the best breweries in Munich is also one of the reasons why many guests and tourists are flocking this event every year.

Of course, you must not miss the live bands in every beer tent. There are live musicians playing great musical instruments. If you understand what is bit depth. I know you will have fun listening to the live bands there. This is one thing I love everytime I visit a German festival.

If you are in Bavaria especially in Munich area, never miss the fun visiting the world’s largest festival. I guess, I am a lucky traveler visiting Oktoberfest many times. Cheers and be safe!

    Gordon’s Travel Guide

The Leader In Promoting Adventure & Active Travel Companies

    Adventure Travel Company

Since 1997, Gordon’s Travel Guide has been creating marketplaces for adventure travel companies around the globe – bringing together adventure travel, active vacation providers and leisure vacations with active travelers through adventure travel books and their award winning adventure travel and active vacations web site.

    Adventure Travel Book

In 1994, Timothy Gordon set out to catalog the most exciting tour operators in the world by compiling all the information people need to take an action-packed adventure or active vacation into a 512-page adventure travel book – Gordon’s Guide to Adventure Vacations. As sales of the Gordon’s Guide adventure travel books took off at leading bookstores (including Barnes & Noble, Borders, B. Dalton and more), the Gordon’s Guide name became known as an authority on adventure travel for travel consumers and trade professionals alike. Book reviewers from coast to coast donned the book “the bible of adventure vacations.” It was then that Timothy and his team were ready to take their concept to the Internet – where they now offer dynamic services for consumers of adventure travel and the tour operators that service them.

    Adventure Travel Web Site

Since its launch, GordonsGuide.com has put a solid stake in the ground as a premier adventure travel web site and has been awarded “Best of the Web” in the Adventure Travel category by Forbes Magazine from 2000 through 2011.

The core of the site is focused on adventure travel and active vacations – it’s a supermall of adventure and active vacations with over 80 travel categories featuring thousands of vacations from hundreds of adventure and active travel companies.

The company is lead by Timothy Gordon, a veteran of the adventure travel industry. Before becoming a travel publisher, Gordon spent over 22 years in recreational/hospitality management with a focus on the adventure travel sector. Over the course of his 22 years in the business he worked as a river operations manager for eight seasons, a packer and outfitter for Yosemite National Park, a snowmobile guide, a cross-country ski guide and he worked for six years in the Guest Ranch industry as a wrangler, guest services manager and general ranch manager.

Gordon is also a level 5 certified ski instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors Association and is certified in scuba diving and advanced cliff-side and mountain rescue by the California Fire Marshal. His diverse experiences working within the adventure travel industry allow him to bring a wealth of knowledge to his publishing groups that few others have to offer. He has walked the walk of many of his vacation provider clients and brings that insight to Gordon’s Travel Guide.

The goal at Gordon’s Travel Guide is to make it quick and easy for active travelers and trade professionals worldwide to research, plan and experience adventure travel and active vacations by providing high quality, informative information through multiple and integrated media. Gordon’s Travel Guide is a leader dedicated to promoting adventure travel and active vacations, and the companies providing these services.
