10 Reasons Adventure Travel is Good For You, adventure travel.#Adventure #travel

10 Reasons Why Adventure Travel Is Good for You

One of my favorite scientific findings: Take a hike, get a bigger brain. ©Candice Gaukel Andrews

For the past several years, I have been writing about adventure topics for the Good Nature Travel blog, on everything from the merits of bumpy roads to tracking devices on narwhals. From my own thoughts on adventure to the latest scientific research, we’ve covered a lot of ground together.

Looking over all of these articles since my first appeared here on February 9, 2010, I realize that one theme keeps showing up: adventure travel is simply good for you. So I’ve compiled a Top 10 list of the reasons why.

While there are several physical health benefits to adventure travel (see nos. 1, 2 and 3, below), the advantages for your mental wellness are just as impressive (nos. 4, 5 and 6). Too, adventure travel can enlighten your soul (nos. 7 and 8 ) and even help save the world (nos. 9 and 10).

Can you think of anything else that can do all that?

Ten Reasons Why Adventure Travel Is Good for You

One wilderness just doesn’t seem to be enough; your soul quickly calls for more. ©Candice Gaukel Andrews

1) When you get dirty, you improve your physical health. Scientists have recently reported that our modern obsession with cleanliness might be leading to a rise in allergies, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Getting dirty could just be the best path to developing a strong immune system. Going on adventures means getting dirty—and healthier.

2) Outdoor activities can prevent (or treat) a wide range of health problems. Doctors around the country are now handing out “park prescriptions” for conditions ranging from heart disease to obesity to attention deficit disorder. Adventure travel takes park prescriptions to the next level.

3) There are no age limits on adventure. Anyone can make nature a playground. Adventure travel is an activity you can stick with for life.

4) Take a hike, get a bigger brain. Research indicates that hiking or walking grows brains. Typically, your hippocampus gets smaller once you hit your mid 50s, leading to memory loss. But a group of middle-aged adults that took three, 40-minute walks a week for a year grew their hippocampi, on average, by 2 percent, which could improve their retention for years. Hiking adventures will keep you mentally sharp.

5) Going on adventures raises your tolerance for uncertainty. Placing yourself in situations where things don t always go as planned—such as on an adventure trip—helps you learn to cope with the uncertainties in life. And there is no shortage of those.

6) Adventure travel lets you safely “try on” alternate lives. One of the best things about embarking on an adventure is that you can shed your familiar skin for a while and pretend to be anything you want to be—before you take a drastic and permanent step. Who would you be if you lived there?

7) Going on adventures fosters reflectiveness, a mental skill often in short supply today. Adventures give us pleasant memories, which we often bring back to the forefront of our minds for reminiscing. This means that our journeys “marinate” awhile, an especially valuable exercise these days when we’re all so perpetually busy that most of what we do passes by in a flash and is gone forever—without having any real meaning attached to it. But reliving our adventures again and again allows us the time—and capability—to learn something from them.

Adventure travelers need to become environmental activists. ©Candice Gaukel Andrews

8 ) Adventure travel feeds your dreams and builds your confidence. The editor of National Geographic Traveler Magazine once suggested that the “Cycle of Travel” went like this: 1) dream, 2) plan, 3) go, 4) share. But no matter how many steps it takes to get there, the one thing that’s certain about traveling to spectacular nature spots is that it soon becomes addictive. Experiencing one wilderness just doesn’t seem to be enough; your soul quickly calls for more. And each time you go, you find yourself changing. Adventures build your confidence; and with each successive one, you challenge yourself just a little bit more. I would add a fifth step to the Travel Cycle: dream bigger.

9) Adventure experiences remedy a societal ill: loss of adventurous children and the extinguishing of wanderlust. Today, the United States is facing what some have described as an epidemic: the loss of the adventurous childhood. The Outdoor Foundation reports that youth participation in outside activities has declined for three straight years. And when parents overschedule kids and insist on being involved in every one of their activities—when they become “helicopter parents”—they kill a child’s desire to explore. The spark for wanderlust goes out, permanently.

10) Adventure travelers may be more important than ever for saving the world. Some scientists warn that in nine years’ time (or less), global warming will become impossible to reverse, triggering accelerated climate change. If they’re right, a group of individuals within the general public is going to have to come forward and upgrade their environmental efforts, if the world is to survive. That select group of people just may turn out to be adventure travelers: those who typically venture beyond the envelope in the outdoors.

As Mark Twain once wrote, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Here’s to your adventures, in whatever corner of the world you find them,

The Rise of Women – s-Only Adventure Travel, Travel Leisure, adventure

Why Women Are Booking More Adventure Travel Than Ever

Outfitters both emerging and established are catering to female adventurers looking for excitement, wellness, and social engagement — without the guys around.

It was New Year’s Day 2012, and Allison Fleece was feeling unmoored. On a whim, she e-mailed a group of her most intrepid friends. “This time next year,” she wrote, “I want to be standing on the roof of Africa.” The following winter, she was on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, exhausted and giddy, with nine women beside her. She turned to Danielle Thornton, a climbing buddy who would soon become her best friend. “This is what all travel should be like,” she said.

The next year, Fleece and Thornton headed back to Kilimanjaro — this time leading a group of 29 women from 11 countries on the first trip of WHOA Travel, their fledgling adventure-tour company for women. In their previous lives, Fleece, now 31, had been an education advisor and Thornton, 34, a creative director at an ad agency. But a few months after their Kilimanjaro expedition, they’d quit their jobs, Googled how to form an LLC, and launched a travel business. WHOA stands for Women High on Adventure or Women Hooked on Awesomeness, depending on whom you ask.

It’s one of the latest additions to the growing list of women-only adventure companies — outfitters that cater to a generation of female travelers who prefer surf weekends and mountain-climbing expeditions to the spa weekends of old. The idea goes back to the late 1970s, when women who’d come of age in the era of second-wave feminism began starting scrappy adventure programs, outdoorsy relatives of the feminist music festivals and conferences that were then sprouting up around the country. By the late 90s, upscale operators had joined the fray, courting luxury travelers — often widowed or divorced retirees who had the time and money to travel but didn’t want to be the loner in a group of couples. More recently, with a certain demographic of women rebranding feminism as less a political calling than a lifestyle choice — one focused on personal empowerment and self-care — female-centric travel companies are retooling and expanding once again.

“We were around back when women-only travel was kind of a joke,” says Jennifer Haddow, who seven years ago took over Wild Women Expeditions, a Canada-based company founded in 1991. “People didn’t really see why it was valuable.” Now veteran outfitters like Haddow are diversifying their offerings to take advantage of a growing market. Wild Women has added horseback riding in Mongolia and cycling, trekking, and rafting in Thailand to its original roster of kayaking and canoeing trips in Ontario and British Columbia. Adventure Women, a 35-year-old Massachusetts company that changed hands last year, has begun catering to younger clients with its “adventurettes” — bespoke getaways, like long weekends of riding, river floating, fine dining, and massages in Montana, for women who don’t want a traditional bachelorette party — in addition to its bucket-list journeys to places like Ireland and Nepal.

Some lifestyle companies outside the travel industry see all-female trips as a way to extend their brands. REI’s recently expanded Outessa program brings women to different U.S. mountains for long weekends of yoga, hiking, and bonding. The sporting-goods giant has also ramped up its backpacking- and camping-centric REI Women’s Adventures, which offer rugged outdoor experiences in locations ranging from Africa to America’s national parks. For the crystals-and-Coachella crowd, the bohemian apparel brand Free People operates FP Escapes. Its wellness-focused itineraries, including superfood cooking classes in the Andes and yoga workshops in Yelapa, Mexico, come with cleanses, meditation rituals, new-moon ceremonies, and Instagram-ready accommodations like tepees and tree houses.

For some upstart outfitters, personal growth is as central to the mission as having fun. Damesly, founded last year, emphasizes professional networking and skill building, combining volcano hikes in Iceland and surfing lessons in Hawaii with workshops on topics like video editing. Fit & Fly Girl’s health-focused retreats come with daily workout classes and nutritious meals. Explorer Chick has several offerings for beginners to develop wilderness survival skills and learn backpacking basics.

Overseas Travel Advice, Safety Information for International Travel, overseas adventure travel.#Overseas

Overseas Travel

Overseas adventure travel

Overseas Travel Checklist

  • Know about your destination
  • Up to date safety information
  • Organized travel arrangements
  • Visas and valid passport
  • Know where embassies are
  • Have travel insurance
  • Copies all of documents
  • Spare cash or credit card
  • Pack well and lightly
  • Sense of adventure!

Overseas travel will expand your horizons, introduce new adventures and be a highlight of your life experience. Travelling abroad requires a little more planning than domestic travel because you have to take various issues into consideration. Whether it s your first time abroad or you re a travel veteran it s important to plan and prepare for a safe, successful overseas trip. Whether you are going to visit someone or having your partner visit you, make sure you know all the rules and legal requirements of your destination country before the trip is planned.

Where Are You Going?

Hit up your local library, reputable internet sites and travel veterans for information about where you’re heading. Arming yourself with cultural, geographical and weather information will make your trip safer and more enjoyable. Not only will you pack the right gear, see all the important sites and have a better time you’ll be better prepared for anything that comes your way. Lonely Planet is a handy site.

What’s Happening There?

While you have your head excitedly stuck in travel guides and tourist brochures your dream destination could be suffering local violence, terror attacks or natural disasters.

From time to time, certain countries become unsafe for travel whether it be for political reasons, health warning or terrorism threats. Most governments issue safety warnings to keep citizens well aware of the dangers of traveling to some high risk areas.

How Are You Getting There?

Every country has different entry requirements depending on your nation of citizenship. The one thing you’ll need for sure is a valid passport with at least 6 months before expiry. A lot of countries require a visa for entry, some of which require pre-trip preparation. Check the following sites, travel agents, your government and the embassy of your destination country to make sure you meet entry requirements.

Will They Let You In?

Every country has different entry requirements depending on your nation of citizenship. The one thing you ll need for sure is a valid passport with at least 6 months before expiry. A lot of countries require a visa for entry, some of which require pre-trip preparation. Check the following sites, travel agents, your government and the embassy of your destination country to make sure you meet entry requirements.

Do You Have A Valid Passport?

A valid passport is essential for travelling abroad because it is required to enter and leave a country. Check the rules for the country you are visiting because some countries require your passport to be valid for the duration of your visit as well as for three to six months after your entry into their country.

Take a look at the links below to find more country-specific information about passports.

Do You Have The Right Visa?

Before you head out of the country to visit your sweetheart or invite them to visit you, check to see you have all the right travel documentation. Having a passport isn t enough because sometimes the destination country may require you to have a visa before allowing you to enter the country. You can obtain a visa from the consulate of the destination in your country and since you will be visiting, you will need a tourist visa.

For more information, take a look at some of these websites:

Who Knows You’re Going?

Leave copies of your itinerary, passport, visas, insurance policies, plane tickets and accommodation with friends and family members. Stay in constant touch with home while you’re away through email and phone calls. Not only is this a safe and sensible move, you’ll be able to share all the cool details of your trip and have backups in case you lose any information.

Are You Carrying Enough Money?

When travelling, carrying large amounts of cash with you is never advisable. Instead carry traveler’s checks and/or credit and debit cards. If you are carrying plastic money (cards), make sure your card can be used at ATM locations internationally. There may be a fee for this but usually cards with the MasterCard, Visa, Cirrus or Maestro logos on them are accepted worldwide.

What Are The Health Requirements?

Some countries pose more health risks than others and therefore the health and vaccination requirements vary in each country. Find out the relevant rules and get all the necessary vaccination before you head out for your visit. Apart from your vaccination, you might also want to get travel health insurance, just in case you fall sick while you are on holiday. Some of these websites have useful health information for travelers:

What If Something Goes Wrong?

There is always the possibility of something going wrong while you’re overseas. The most important bit of advice is to keep your guard up and be well aware of things that could possibly go wrong. If you’re well prepared there is very little that could turn into a disaster. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that will cover all the activities that you’re likely to do (check skiing, golf, diving, etc) as well as all your possessions. Know where your country’s embassies are in your destination country and keep important phone numbers and addresses, such as emergency services and embassies, with you at all times. Importantly, don’t freak out about the little stuff. A stolen camera or mild case of tummy sickness shouldn’t spoil your trip.

What Do You Need To Take?

Take appropriate clothing, footwear and other gear for your trip. If you’re mountain climbing leave the stilettos at home but you’ll be equally uncomfortable wearing hiking boots in a nice Parisian restaurant. Know what the weather will be like, know what you’ll be doing and pack well but lightly.

Gap Year Adventure Travel, Go Overseas, overseas adventure travel.#Overseas #adventure #travel

Gap Year Adventure Travel

With gap year adventure travel programs, participants have the chance to explore new corners of the globe on foot, by bike, or surfboard, gain technical skills, and challenge themselves emotionally and physically. Not all programs are the same either, and will sometimes pair other interests, such as volunteering or environmental education, to assure that your gap year isn’t just about catching the sickest wave, but also gaining a deeper understanding of the places you visit.

It’s hard not to travel to South Africa with adventure in mind — it’s home of The Big 5, some of the world’s best national parks and nature reserves, coastlines great for surfing and diving with Great White Sharks, and countless hikes, treks, and rock climbing routes. For adventure travelers, South Africa’s greatest appeal is the range of activity. Another plus? Affordable cost of living and programs that don’t have language requirements.

New Zealand has long been a popular gap year destination and for an adventure travel gap year, this outdoorsy nation really packs in a lot for its size. In New Zealand, gap year participants can learn about its unique natural features while hiking, biking, or kayaking or work on their outdoor leadership skills through a more structured, technically-focused program like Horizons Unlimited. Prefer an independent gap year? New Zealand’s great for that too.

Although India gets points for its low cost, welcoming vibe, and wide variety of volunteer projects, it is equally appealing for adventure travel. It is, after all, one of the five countries that the iconic Himalayan mountain range crosses through. You won’t be summiting Matterhorn, but gap year programs in India will lead participants on shorter treks through the range, on whitewater rafting and/or kayaking trips, or camel treks through the desert of Rajasthan.

Want a trek that takes you to one of the world’s most well known historical destinations? Then follow Peru’s famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. If this isn’t enough, Peru also has rain forests and surf-able coastline to explore, volunteer opportunities and Spanish immersion to diversify your experience with. Also, did I mention it’s inexpensive?

Patagonia (Argentina/Chile)

An adventure travel gap year in Patagonia offers some of the continent’s most unusual and incredible landscapes, but also a wide variety of adventure travel activities. Combine that with affordability and a chance to learn Spanish or participate in a volunteer project or course in ecological conservation, and you’ve got yourself a well-rounded gap year destination.

Also popular? Tanzania, USA, Nepal, and Thailand.

Single vs. Multiple Destination

Since longer adventure travel gap years tend to focus more on the skills and experiences you are getting than a specific region or language, you won’t always be staying in one place throughout the program. IWLS’s year long adventure travel program, for example, will help students develop skills in outdoor leadership and guiding from as far north as Alaska, to as far south as Patagonia.

In short, single destinations are best for short term gap years or programs that combine adventure travel with a course or volunteer project. Multiple destinations are better if you are taking a longer gap year or want to put a single skill to the test in different locations (surfing the same beach for a year can get old).

Long term vs. Short term

A gap year doesn’t have to be a year. Finding programs for several weeks to a semester are also possible. If you choose a longer gap year, the upfront cost will be more expensive, but you will save money in the end. You can accumulate more college credits, and are able to do more and see more.

Short-term gap years are best for those who don’t have as much freedom to take a whole year off from work/school or can’t afford a full year. For some technical certification programs, long term isn’t necessary — you only need a few weeks to complete the course.

Types of Activities

Just to give you some idea, here are a few of the activities that adventure travel gap years focus on:

  • Scuba diving
  • Surfing
  • Skiing
  • Bungee jumping
  • White water rafting
  • Hiking/Trekking
  • Ice climbing
  • Rock climbing
  • Kayaking
  • First aid certification
  • CPR certification
Combining Adventure Travel with Volunteer Work, an Internship, or Language Study

You will frequently find gap year programs that also give participants an opportunity to volunteer, study the local language, or engage in an internship during the program. This can be, but isn’t always, a smart move. Combing your adventure travel with another course, job, or project will give you a more varied experience and rounded insight on the destinations you visit, but if you’re goals are more focused on building your job qualifications and technical skills, having variation could be distracting.

Before you start your search, decide what your goals are and what you want your program to be focused on. Do you want to spend a few weeks giving back to a local community or learning Spanish between scuba and ice climbing expeditions? Or would you prefer to focus on outdoor leadership skills and getting your Wilderness First Responder certification? Know yourself, then decide.

Getting Your Family on Board

Especially with a gap year program that has students participating in adventurous activities more often than receiving lectures in a classroom, your family will be concerned for your safety. Ease their concerns by giving them as much information as possible about safety credentials of instructors (how experienced are they? Do they have first aid or Wilderness First Responder certification?) and your program’s plan of action in case of an emergency. Research the country/countries you will be visiting as well to find out what safety concerns you should be aware of (travel.state.gov is a good place to start). Also be sure to emphasize the benefits of your gap year and a plan for financing it!

When To Take an Adventure Travel Gap Year

Timing for your gap year totally depends on what activities you want to do, where you want to go, and whether or not you are flexible in when you can take a gap year. For example, if you want to get certified in rock/ice climbing leadership, you have the option of heading north to Alaska/Yukon in December – February, or south to Argentina/Chile in June-August. However if you are not as flexible in timing (for example, you don’t want to take a year off from college, but have summer/winter vacations to play around with), you will still be able to do a gap year in adventure travel, but you may have to be flexible with the type of activity or destination you choose.

Tips on Funding

Believe it or not, scholarships, fellowships, and grants for adventure travel gap years do exist. Start your search with your program provider, but don’t stop there. If you are getting college credit, you qualify for some study abroad scholarships — apply to those too. You should always apply to multiple scholarships/fellowships/grants.

For some destinations, such as Australia or New Zealand, you could alternatively cut the costs of your gap year by applying for a working holiday visa and getting a part-time job or paid internship during your time abroad.

College Credit

IWLS, Carpe Diem, and numerous other programs offer college credit for their trips. If this is a deciding factor for you, make sure your college will accept the credit (often as a transfer credit) before you sign up. If you are organizing your trip independently or through a program provider that doesn’t have a partnership with a university to give college credit, ask an advisor at your university to see if you can count your gap year as an independent study course.

Alaska Adventure Travel Tours

Adventure travel companies

Are you looking for Alaska adventure? Alaska Tour Travel is here to help you find the Alaska adventure that is perfect for you. How about a sea kayak trip near Kenai Fjords National Park or mountain biking some of the most scenic single track you will ever see? Climb a mountain or land on a glacier by helicopter and go for a glacier trek. Hop in a raft and enjoy some thrilling class IV whitewater, along with some great scenery and Alaska wildlife. Get out and enjoy endless Alaska hiking opportunities across the state. Want a true Alaska adventure and to get away from the crowds? Escape to a world class remote wilderness lodge – Alaska has dozens to choose from, including some deep in Denali National Park. When looking at Alaska adventure travel options, the list is long but here are a few of our favorites.

Alaska Rafting Adventures

Across Alaska there are dozens of rafting companies ready to get you out on the water. From scenic float trips to serious whitewater rafting, from a couple hours to a couple of weeks, Alaska has a raft adventure perfect for you. Choose a paddle raft or let your guide do all the work. Our favorite Alaska rafting trips are on the Nenana River near Denali National Park, and we have a number of different Denali Park raft trips to choose from. Go to Denali Park rafting.

Alaska Bear Viewing Adventures

If you are looking for bears, Alaska is the place for you. Of course a bus tour into Denali National Park is a great start to see bears in their natural habitat. In recent years, fly-in Alaska bear viewing trips have become increasingly popular. These flights generally depart from Anchorage and fly to southwest Alaska destinations near Lake Clark National Park or Katmai National Park. Go to Alaska bear viewing.

Alaska Helicopter Adventures

A helicopter will get you to Alaska’s backcountry fast! Popular trips are available in cities like Juneau, Seward, the Talkeetna area, and our favorite – Denali National Park. Enjoy a scenic flight, search for wildlife and land on a massive glacier for a short walk around. Or leave the helicopter behind for a wilderness hike on a heli hiking adventure. Go to Alaska helicopter tours.

Alaska Kayaking Adventures

Kenai Fjords National Park, Prince William Sound, Glacier Bay National Park – it is no wonder that Alaska can be a sea kayaker’s dream come true. Rentals as well as guided trips are available, from a few hours to a few weeks. Save some time to visit Seward and kayak the nearby waters of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. Even if you are a just learning there are plenty of trips for you, including day trips to Fox Island and half-day kayak adventures from Lowell Point. Go to Alaska kayaking.

Alaska Fishing Adventures

Fish on! Whether you are looking for a monster halibut or world class salmon fishing we have just the trip for you. Head to the Kenai Peninsula for great ocean fishing choices in Seward or Homer, or try your luck for salmon on the famous Kenai River. River trips from Talkeetna and fly-in trips from Anchorage continue to be popular. Go to Alaska fishing.

Alaska Wilderness Lodges

Want to get away from the crowds? Plan on a stay at one or more of Alaska’s numerous wilderness lodges. Stay deep in the heart of Denali National Park at the Kantishna Roadhouse, just a stones throw from Mt. Denali. These lodges are generally all inclusive with meals and most activities included. Go to Denali Park backcountry lodges.
