Synthetic Cannabinoids

1-800-222-1222
For Media: 703-894-1865

With names like Spice, K2, No More Mr. Nice Guy, and hundreds of others, the drugs often called “synthetic marijuana” are – in reality – very different from marijuana. They contain powerful chemicals called cannabimimetics and can cause dangerous health effects. The drugs are made specifically to be abused. Like many other illegal drugs, synthetic marijuana is not tested for safety, and users don’t really know exactly what chemicals they are putting into their bodies.

These synthetic drugs can be extremely dangerous and addictive. Health effects from the drug can be life-threatening and can include:

  • Severe agitation and anxiety.
  • Fast, racing heartbeat and higher blood pressure.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Muscle spasms, seizures, and tremors.
  • Intense hallucinations and psychotic episodes.
  • Suicidal and other harmful thoughts and/or actions.

Poison center experts – as well as many federal, state, and local government officials – have called synthetic drug use a risk to the public’s health and a hazard to public safety.

The harmful effects from these products were first reported in the U.S. in 2009. Since then, the drugs have spread throughout the country. Poison centers received 2,668 calls about exposures to these drugs in 2013, 3,682 exposures in 2014, and 7,794 exposures in 2015.

What should you do if someone has used synthetic cannabinoids?

Call your local poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Fifty-five poison centers around the country have experts waiting to answer your call. These experts can help you decide whether someone can be treated at home, or whether he or she must go to a hospital.

Dial 9-1-1 immediately if someone:

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) (2014), within the past two years there has been an increased pattern of drug abuse in St. Louis, Missouri related to synthetic drugs, herbal preparations, and synthetic cannabinoids (Israel, 2014). Poison center experts, otherwise known as Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs), closely monitor this information and upload data to NPDS as calls come into the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. Similar to St. Louis, poison centers saw a surge in synthetic cannabinoid exposures (n=268) in November 2016. According to KOMU-TV, the NBC-affiliated television station for mid-Missouri many of the exposed individuals were a part of the homeless population.

Although research on poison data pertaining to synthetic cannabinoid exposures has evolved within the past years, it is important to note that the real time surveillance and tracking of these exposures highlights the importance and need for poison center surveillance. In order for public health professionals to treat conditions which contribute to health disparities, they must first be involved in the impacted communities. Fortunately, the American Association of Poison Control Centers supports the nation’s 55 poison centers which are located in states and territories in an effort to protect the public’s health while preventing and treating poison exposures.

For more information, call your local poison center at 1-800-222-1222 . Poison centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year for poisoning emergencies and for informational calls.

How Much Birth Control Would Cost Under The AHCA #birth #control,

#

Here’s How Much Your Birth Control May Cost Under AHCA

Like Us On Facebook

The American Health Care Act. the GOP health care plan that aims to repeal and replace Obamacare, has narrowly passed in the House, and currently awaits a vote in the Senate.

The controversial bill has been met with considerable pushback, as it would ultimately leave 24 million Americans without health insurance by 2026, according to an analysis from the Congressional Budget Office.

Should the legislation pass, women are poised to face especially complex challenges when it comes to accessing birth control, which has been covered by Obamacare thanks to the “birth control benefit .”

The Affordable Care Act requires insurance plans to cover all Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved methods of birth control for women without having to pay any out-of-pocket costs.

Under the AHCA, however, women would no longer be able to reap any of those benefits.

While Republicans may view a woman’s access to birth control as a “nitty-gritty detail ” in crafting health care legislation, any woman of child-bearing age can assure you the issue is far from trivial.

Let’s talk about how much each contraceptive method actually costs when you pay out-of-pocket.

While the prices vary depending on the circumstances, for most brands, a pack of birth control pills (which typically provides a month’s worth of contraception) can cost as much as $50 .

However, it’s important to remember that only 17 percent of women who use a form of birth control are taking the pill.

The intrauterine device, or IUD, is another commonly used method, though it demands a much steeper price out-of-pocket.

Popular IUD brands like Mirena and Kyleena can cost anywhere between $500 and over $800 .

Similarly, a birth control implant can set you back $800 without insurance .

Unfortunately, the prices aren’t much kinder on your wallet as you make your way through the rest of the viable birth control options. Without insurance, you could pay up to $250 for the Depo-Provera shot. and $80 a month for the Nuvaring .

Mind you, these costs don’t even factor in the doctors’ visits to obtain these prescriptions, nor the follow-up visits, all of which do not come free without insurance.

So, what about Planned Parenthood?

Fortunately, clinics like Planned Parenthood provide amazing resources to women seeking forms of contraception but lack the health insurance to pay for it.

Not so fortunately, the latest version of AHCA plans to nix federal funding of the organization and bar patients from using any Medicaid dollars to access treatment at Planned Parenthood clinics.

To put this in perspective, in 2015, approximately 43 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget. or around $500 million, came from federal grants and reimbursements, according to NPR.

Moreover, 60 percent of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding comes from Medicaid and Title X reimbursements for preventative and primary care, which includes not only birth control, but cancer screenings. as well.

Even if the AHCA manages to garner enough votes in the Senate, this does not mean Planned Parenthood will vanish overnight.

But they will lose a huge chunk of their funds, and we as patients could see an extremely alarming drop in the quality of their services.

Plus, according to the Government Accountability Office, approximately 390,000 women could lose access to preventative care. and as many as 650,000 women would receive reduced preventative care.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, discussed the potential impact of the GOP health care plan in the following statement:

This is the worst bill for women’s health in a generation. This disastrous legislation once again makes being a woman a pre-existing condition; ‘defunds’ Planned Parenthood; guts maternity coverage; strips 24 million of their health insurance; lets insurance companies charge people with pre-existing conditions exorbitant rates; forces new moms back to work shortly after giving birth; and reduces access to contraception.

In short, this bill makes it harder to prevent unintended pregnancy, harder to have a healthy pregnancy, and harder to raise a family. Alarm bells should be ringing in every house across America.

Richards urges the Senate to “ listen to the American people and reject the worst bill for women’s health in a generation.”

While it’s up to your health care provider whether or not to cover birth control, and some states, like New York. have made a plan to continue making coverage mandatory, the Trump administration has made it painfully clear that women’s health is at the bottom of their priority list.

Northern Virginia Dental Hygienists Association #dental #hygienist, #american #dental #hygienists’ #association,

#

So at first I was going to just use this quote:

Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression By saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.

But anyone who knows me knows I am not so silent.

Many of you have seen me for years at meetings, but may not know me. I am a native Californian, a mother of two amazing children, an adventurist, nature lover, volunteer, and best of all a hygienist that gets to be your President.

This year holds promise for our association, however without each one of our members we are nothing. It has been a sad turn of events, watching the decline in memberships, and attendance of our meetings. We have so many strong, intelligent, caring, and positive hygienists in our component. It is my hope to create new excitement in our CEs with Wine, dine and Learn CEs, and hope to see more of you attend. With the creation of so many privately profiting CEs that are being offered, the association is struggling. There are many interesting courses being offered outside of the association and it is our goal to have similar CEs available to you. Many don’t know that the money from our local NVDHA CE courses goes directly to our association and no one is profiting from them, we are 100% volunteer driven and the money from these courses allows us to contribute and donate to our local Northern Virginia Dental Clinics in Loudon and Fairfax, the VDHA foundation, and ADHA Institute for oral health. We need each and everyone of you to please help our component continue in this mission.

I am so proud to get to be a part of such a passionate group of hygienists, and hope we can all continue on this journey to help others and keep our association going strong.

The best partnerships aren’t dependent on a mere common goal but on a shared path of equality, desire, and no small amount of passion.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Earwax and Care #american #academy #of #cosmetic #surgery

#

Good intentions to keep ears clean may weaken the ability to hear. The ear is a delicate and intricate body part, including the skin of the ear canal and the eardrum. Therefore, special care should be given to this part of the body. Start by discontinuing the habit of inserting cotton-tipped applicators or other objects into the ear canals.

Why does the body produce earwax?

Cerumen or earwax is healthy in normal amounts and serves as a self-cleaning agent with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties. The absence of earwax may result in dry, itchy ears. Self-cleaning means there is a slow and orderly movement of earwax and dead skin cells from the eardrum to the ear opening. Old earwax is constantly being transported, assisted by chewing and jaw motion, from the ear canal to the ear opening where, most of the time, it dries, flakes, and falls out.

Earwax is not formed in the deep part of the ear canal near the eardrum. It is only formed in the outer one-third of the ear canal. So, when a patient has wax blockage against the eardrum, it is often because he has been probing the ear with such things as cotton-tipped applicators, bobby pins, or twisted napkin corners. These objects only push the wax in deeper.

When should the ears be cleaned?

Under ideal circumstances, the ear canals should never have to be cleaned. However, that isn’t always the case. The ears should be cleaned when enough earwax accumulates to cause symptoms or to prevent a needed assessment of the ear by your doctor. This condition is call cerumen impaction, and may cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Earache, fullness in the ear, or a sensation the ear is plugged
  • Partial hearing loss, which may be progressive
  • Tinnitus, ringing, or noises in the ear
  • Itching, odor, or discharge
  • Coughing
What is the recommended method of ear cleaning?

To clean the ears, wash the external ear with a cloth, but do not insert anything into the ear canal.

Most cases of ear wax blockage respond to home treatments used to soften wax. Patients can try placing a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial drops in the ear. Detergent drops such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (available in most pharmacies) may also aid in the removal of wax.

Irrigation or ear syringing is commonly used for cleaning and can be performed by a physician or at home using a commercially available irrigation kit. Common solutions used for syringing include water and saline, which should be warmed to body temperature to prevent dizziness. Ear syringing is most effective when water, saline, or wax dissolving drops are put in the ear canal 15 to 30 minutes before treatment. Caution is advised to avoid having your ears irrigated if you have diabetes, a hole in the eardrum (perforation), tube in the eardrum, skin problems such as eczema in the ear canal or a weakened immune system.

Manual removal of earwax is also effective. This is most often performed by an otolaryngologist using suction or special miniature instruments, and a microscope to magnify the ear canal. Manual removal is preferred if your ear canal is narrow, the eardrum has a perforation or tube, other methods have failed, or if you have skin problems affecting the ear canal, diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Why shouldn’t cotton swabs be used to clean earwax?

Wax blockage is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. This is often caused by attempts to clean the ear with cotton swabs. Most cleaning attempts merely push the wax deeper into the ear canal, causing a blockage.

The outer ear is the funnel-like part of the ear that can be seen on the side of the head, plus the ear canal (the hole which leads down to the eardrum). The ear canal is shaped somewhat like an hourglass narrowing part way down. The skin of the outer part of the canal has special glands that produce earwax. This wax is supposed to trap dust and dirt particles to keep them from reaching the eardrum. Usually the wax accumulates a bit, dries out, and then comes out of the ear, carrying dirt and dust with it. Or it may slowly migrate to the outside where it can be wiped off.

Are ear candles an option for removing wax build up?

No, ear candles are not a safe option of wax removal as they may result in serious injury. Since users are instructed to insert the 10- to 15-inch-long, cone-shaped, hollow candles, typically made of wax-impregnated cloth, into the ear canal and light the exposed end, some of the most common injuries are burns, obstruction of the ear canal with wax of the candle, or perforation of the membrane that separates the ear canal and the middle ear.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) became concerned about the safety issues with ear candles after receiving reports of patient injury caused by the ear candling procedure. There are no controlled studies or other scientific evidence that support the safety and effectiveness of these devices for any of the purported claims or intended uses as contained in the labeling.

Based on the growing concern associated with the manufacture, marketing, and use of ear candles, the FDA has undertaken several successful regulatory actions, including product seizures and injunctions, since 1996. These actions were based, in part, upon violations of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that pose an imminent danger to health.

When should a doctor be consulted?

If the home treatments discussed in this leaflet are not satisfactory or if wax has accumulated so much that it blocks the ear canal (and hearing), a physician may prescribe eardrops designed to soften wax, or she may wash or vacuum it out. Occasionally, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) may need to remove the wax under microscopic visualization.

If there is a possibility of a perforation in the eardrum, consult a physician prior to trying any over-the-counter remedies. Putting eardrops or other products in the ear with the presence of an eardrum perforation may cause pain or an infection. Certainly, washing water through such a hole could start an infection.

What can I do to prevent excessive earwax?

There are no proven ways to prevent cerumen impaction, but not inserting cotton-tipped swabs or other objects in the ear canal is strongly advised. If you are prone to repeated wax impaction or use hearing aids, consider seeing your doctor every 6 to 12 months for a checkup and routine preventive cleaning.

What It s Like To Vacation in Cuba – American Travel

#travel cuba
#

The complete guide to making vacationing in Cuba a reality.

Do I Have to Go on an Educational Tour?

Technically, yes. “American travelers to Cuba need to be on some kind of tour, which can consist of as few as two people,” says Diane Mullahy, a Cuba specialist with Travel Leaders. “But a program can be customized geared to their desires, whether they are foodies, history buffs, art lovers, photographers, etc.”

Will my vacation be on a coach bus with 25 other people?

iStock

Can I fly there from the US?

Yes. It is now possible to fly to Cuba from the United States. That said, these are still charter flights that cannot just be booked online like a regular vacation. “You have to book these through a travel service provider or through someone who sells Cuba,” says Lee. “Also, these flights are not leaving dailyfrom all locations yet, except Miami which has multiple daily flights. That is changing fast as more routes are added from more US cities.” In addition to flights from Miami, JFK has opened up charter flights and Atlanta and Chicago are looking to come onboard, as well.

The Fall 2015 Edition of American Roads Magazine

Public Disclosure– Please Read

I recently learned of a law requiring web sites to let their readers know if any of the are sponsored or compensated. We also are to let readers know if any of our links are ads. Most are not. They are just a way to direct you to more information about the article where the link is placed. The hotel link on this page is a paid link, however it is one I feel is very helpful in booking a hotel. I think readers are smart enough to know an ad when they see one but to obey the letter of the law, I am putting this statement here to make sure everyone understands. American Roads may contain affiliate links. Further, as their bios show, most of the feature writers are professional travel writers. As such we are frequently invited on press trips, also called fam trips. On these trips most of our lodging, dining, admissions fees and often plane fare are covered by the city or firm hosting the trip. It is an opportunity to visit places we might not otherwise be able to visit. However, no one tells us what to write about those places. All opinions are 100% those of the author of that feature column.

Welcome to the Fall issue of American Roads. It’s a fully packed issue as usual with lots of fun places brought to you by some of the best travel writers around. This will be the last of the Civil War Trails articles as this is the last issue of 2015, the end of the Sesquicentennial. When I visit interesting places that relate to the War between the States, I will bring them to you in the Historic Trails feature or other appropriate column. Without getting into politics, I just want to say, I hope no one will let the events of those years be forgotten. It involved all of our ancestors that lived in this country at that time. No matter which side they aided and supported, they were probably doing so with a good heart. One of my favorite sayings is Those who forget their history will be forced to relive it.

As everyone knows if they live on this planet, this is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina followed within a month by Hurricane Rita. My Byroads article is a tribute to the great state of Louisiana in memory of those horrific events. I had a visit planed to New Orleans when Katrina struck. I did an article about my personal memories of the city in the next issue of American Roads. For any of you who want to revisit that article it is found here .

This issue we have a great guest writer, Kathy Barnett, managing editor of the Weekender Magazines. She takes you on a trip in time back to the days of the Wild West and the cattle drives so be sure to check out our Guest Column .

You will always find interesting lodging here at American Roads. Remember when planning a vacation or business trip, it’s always a good idea to research the available lodging. The last thing you want is an unpleasant surprise when you arrive at your destination. My favorite way to check with a reliable service that gives me ratings, reviews, lots of photos and the ability to book through whichever booking agency is currently offering the lowest price. All through the same website. You can do the same. Click here for the best way to find a hotel worldwide.

All of my books are still available at my personal site,

Welcome

Utah Social Security Disability Benefits Lawyer

At the Salt Lake City law firm of Ward Harper, Attorney at Law, we help people throughout of Utah, including Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, Orem, Logan, Vernal and Price, to establish their right to benefits under disability benefits programs run by the Social Security Administration. Contact our office for a free evaluation of your case.

The Social Security disability claims process can present many hurdles for people trying to establish their eligibility for benefits. I represent individuals throughout the claims process. At the third stage of the process, I represent claimants in hearings before administrative law judges to prove their disabilities and right to collect payment. I usually win by the administrative hearing stage. But if not, I appeal. I have taken cases all the way to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Success in SSDI and SSI Appeals

I have won 99% of my cases since January 2001. Through September 2010, this amounted to 940 wins and 8 losses. I have won 1665 cases since 1994. Attorney Ward Harper will personally represent you before a judge and make the decisions in your case, not an associate or paralegal.

No Legal Fees Unless We Obtain Benefits for You

I charge no attorney’s fee while we are working on your case. Our standard fee is 25 percent of past-due benefits when we collect them on your behalf, up to a maximum of $6,000, if we win before appealing to federal court, as we usually do. Future benefits are all yours. You therefore pay nothing up front to benefit from our experience and skill.

Ward Harper has focused on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cases for his entire career as a lawyer (since 1988) and advocate for Utah Legal Services since 1984. With more than 26 years of experience and a proven record of success in Social Security benefits litigation, he can help you collect the benefits you need. Contact his office in Salt Lake City for a free evaluation of your claim .

Every legal matter is different. The outcome of each legal case depends upon many factors, including the facts of the case. An attorney’s success in past legal matters should not be relied upon to predict a successful outcome in your own case.

Time Travel Simulation Resolves “Grandfather Paradox” – Scientific American #travel #maps

Time Travel Simulation Resolves “Grandfather Paradox”

Entering a closed timelike curve tomorrow means you could end up at today.

Credit: Dmitry Schidlovsky

On June 28, 2009, the world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking threw a party at the University of Cambridge, complete with balloons, hors d’oeuvres and iced champagne. Everyone was invited but no one showed up. Hawking had expected as much, because he only sent out invitations after his party had concluded. It was, he said, a welcome reception for future time travelers, a tongue-in-cheek experiment to reinforce his 1992 conjecture that travel into the past is effectively impossible.

But Hawking may be on the wrong side of history. Recent experiments offer tentative support for time travel’s feasibility at least from a mathematical perspective. The study cuts to the core of our understanding of the universe, and the resolution of the possibility of time travel, far from being a topic worthy only of science fiction, would have profound implications for fundamental physics as well as for practical applications such as quantum cryptography and computing.

Closed timelike curves

The source of time travel speculation lies in the fact that our best physical theories seem to contain no prohibitions on traveling backward through time. The feat should be possible based on Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as the warping of spacetime by energy and matter. An extremely powerful gravitational field, such as that produced by a spinning black hole, could in principle profoundly warp the fabric of existence so that spacetime bends back on itself. This would create a closed timelike curve, or CTC, a loop that could be traversed to travel back in time.

Hawking and many other physicists find CTCs abhorrent, because any macroscopic object traveling through one would inevitably create paradoxes where cause and effect break down. In a model proposed by the theorist David Deutsch in 1991, however, the paradoxes created by CTCs could be avoided at the quantum scale because of the behavior of fundamental particles, which follow only the fuzzy rules of probability rather than strict determinism. It’s intriguing that you’ve got general relativity predicting these paradoxes, but then you consider them in quantum mechanical terms and the paradoxes go away, says University of Queensland physicist Tim Ralph. It makes you wonder whether this is important in terms of formulating a theory that unifies general relativity with quantum mechanics.

Experimenting with a curve

Recently Ralph and his PhD student Martin Ringbauer led a team that experimentally simulated Deutsch’s model of CTCs for the very first time, testing and confirming many aspects of the two-decades-old theory. Their findings are published in Nature Communications. Much of their simulation revolved around investigating how Deutsch’s model deals with the grandfather paradox, a hypothetical scenario in which someone uses a CTC to travel back through time to murder her own grandfather, thus preventing her own later birth. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

Deutsch’s quantum solution to the grandfather paradox works something like this:

Instead of a human being traversing a CTC to kill her ancestor, imagine that a fundamental particle goes back in time to flip a switch on the particle-generating machine that created it. If the particle flips the switch, the machine emits a particle the particle back into the CTC; if the switch isn’t flipped, the machine emits nothing. In this scenario there is no a priori deterministic certainty to the particle’s emission, only a distribution of probabilities. Deutsch’s insight was to postulate self-consistency in the quantum realm, to insist that any particle entering one end of a CTC must emerge at the other end with identical properties. Therefore, a particle emitted by the machine with a probability of one half would enter the CTC and come out the other end to flip the switch with a probability of one half, imbuing itself at birth with a probability of one half of going back to flip the switch. If the particle were a person, she would be born with a one-half probability of killing her grandfather, giving her grandfather a one-half probability of escaping death at her hands good enough in probabilistic terms to close the causative loop and escape the paradox. Strange though it may be, this solution is in keeping with the known laws of quantum mechanics.

In their new simulation Ralph, Ringbauer and their colleagues studied Deutsch’s model using interactions between pairs of polarized photons within a quantum system that they argue is mathematically equivalent to a single photon traversing a CTC. We encode their polarization so that the second one acts as kind of a past incarnation of the first, Ringbauer says. So instead of sending a person through a time loop, they created a stunt double of the person and ran him through a time-loop simulator to see if the doppelganger emerging from a CTC exactly resembled the original person as he was in that moment in the past.

By measuring the polarization states of the second photon after its interaction with the first, across multiple trials the team successfully demonstrated Deutsch’s self-consistency in action. The state we got at our output, the second photon at the simulated exit of the CTC, was the same as that of our input, the first encoded photon at the CTC entrance, Ralph says. Of course, we’re not really sending anything back in time but [the simulation] allows us to study weird evolutions normally not allowed in quantum mechanics.

Those weird evolutions enabled by a CTC, Ringbauer notes, would have remarkable practical applications, such as breaking quantum-based cryptography through the cloning of the quantum states of fundamental particles. If you can clone quantum states, he says, you can violate the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which comes in handy in quantum cryptography because the principle forbids simultaneously accurate measurements of certain kinds of paired variables, such as position and momentum. But if you clone that system, you can measure one quantity in the first and the other quantity in the second, allowing you to decrypt an encoded message.

In the presence of CTCs, quantum mechanics allows one to perform very powerful information-processing tasks, much more than we believe classical or even normal quantum computers could do, says Todd Brun, a physicist at the University of Southern California who was not involved with the team’s experiment. If the Deutsch model is correct, then this experiment faithfully simulates what could be done with an actual CTC. But this experiment cannot test the Deutsch model itself; that could only be done with access to an actual CTC.

Alternative reasoning

Deutsch’s model isn t the only one around, however. In 2009 Seth Lloyd, a theorist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, proposed an alternative. less radical model of CTCs that resolves the grandfather paradox using quantum teleportation and a technique called post-selection, rather than Deutsch’s quantum self-consistency. With Canadian collaborators, Lloyd went on to perform successful laboratory simulations of his model in 2011. Deutsch’s theory has a weird effect of destroying correlations, Lloyd says. That is, a time traveler who emerges from a Deutschian CTC enters a universe that has nothing to do with the one she exited in the future. By contrast, post-selected CTCs preserve correlations, so that the time traveler returns to the same universe that she remembers in the past.

This property of Lloyd’s model would make CTCs much less powerful for information processing, although still far superior to what computers could achieve in typical regions of spacetime. The classes of problems our CTCs could help solve are roughly equivalent to finding needles in haystacks, Lloyd says. But a computer in a Deutschian CTC could solve why haystacks exist in the first place.

Lloyd, though, readily admits the speculative nature of CTCs. I have no idea which model is really right. Probably both of them are wrong, he says. Of course, he adds, the other possibility is that Hawking is correct, that CTCs simply don’t and cannot exist. Time-travel party planners should save the champagne for themselves their hoped-for future guests seem unlikely to arrive.

What Is Criminal Justice? Inside the System #the #american #criminal #justice

What Is Criminal Justice?

Updated March 18, 2017

The terms criminology and criminal justice are often used interchangeably even though they re not the same thing. If you ask 10 college students who plan to work as police officers what they were studying, chances are that half of them will tell you criminology and the other half will say criminal justice. The fields are definitely related, but you should be able to distinguish between the two if you re looking into this type of career.

What Is the Difference Between Criminal Justice and Criminology?

Criminology is the study of crime and its causes, costs, and consequences. Criminal justice is the system in which crimes and criminals are detected, detained, tried and punished. People who study criminal justice actually learn about all the different components and inner workings of the system.

What Are the Components of the Criminal Justice System?

Three main components make up the criminal justice system: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. They work together to prevent and punish deviant behavior.

  • Law Enforcement: This function is perhaps the most visible. Police officers are typically the first contact a criminal has with the criminal justice system. Police patrol communities to help prevent crimes, to investigate incidences of crime, and to arrest people suspected of committing crimes. Criminals enter the courts system after they ve been arrested.
  • Courts System: The courts system consists of attorneys, judges, and juries, as well as ancillary staff. The guilt or innocence of a suspect is determined in court. The suspect, now a defendant, is offered the opportunity to defend himself in court as evidence is presented. He is then either released or is found to have committed the alleged crime. If he s found guilty, the suspect receives a sentence or punishment based on criteria set by the judge and by statute. The defendant is turned over to the corrections system after sentencing.
  • Corrections System: The corrections system incorporates all forms of sentencing and punishment. It includes incarceration and probation. A convicted criminal is the responsibility of the corrections system until his full sentence is served or commuted.

The History of Crime and Punishment

The criminal justice system has its roots in the Roman Republic and medieval England, which is one of the reasons why Latin remains the basis of the language of the courts. Concepts such as restitution and execution are carried over from ancient times, although other ancient punishments such as mutilation, flogging and branding have largely been done away with in industrialized countries as our sensibilities and understanding of crime have changed.

Incarceration and the prison system only became widely used in the 1800s. When society deemed it necessary to separate a criminal from the population before that time, he was usually exiled and often threatened with death if he returned home.

Modern Policing

Another relatively new development in criminal justice is the modern police force. Once viewed as the duty and responsibility of every male citizen, maintaining safe and secure communities has now become a function of the government.

The criminal justice system continues to evolve through the work of criminologists and law enforcement professionals as we search for ways to better serve victims, witnesses, society and even suspects and convicted criminals. The study of criminal justice helps us learn better ways to solve a crime and protect citizens.

Explore Careers in Criminal Justice

Criminal justice offers a tremendous number of career options. Those interested in working in the field can find plenty of jobs in the courts, corrections or law enforcement systems.

Philosophy Religion

Questions?

Philosophy explores the nature of the world, the basis of human values, and foundations of reason. Philosophy also offers the challenge of interpreting the work of thinkers who have created our intellectual traditions. Students approach these issues through study of both historical literature and contemporary developments.

The study of Western and Eastern religious traditions introduces students to a major influence on all civilizations. Journalists, diplomats, and government specialists benefit from a serious consideration of the inner workings of the religious ethos of civilizations. Daily events remind us that there is no more motivating factor in the culture of nations than ardently held religious belief. A thorough understanding of the modern world requires familiarity with its religious heritage. American University’s Washington, DC setting is advantageous for the study of religion, with national offices and centers for many religions. The Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area also offers a variety of courses in philosophy and religion that are available to American University students.

Why Study Philosophy or Religion?

Students often want to know the practical value of studying philosophy or religion. In other words, how will it help you in the future? What jobs are available for philosophy and religious studies majors? What if you want to continue on to graduate school, but don’t want to teach philosophy or religion?

The study of philosophy or religion helps students develop valuable skills leading to work in any number of fields. Studying philosophy or religion provides excellent preparation for graduate study in many disciplines and areas of study.

Check out a short piece from NPR on the need for philosophers engaged in public debate here .

Career opportunities

Students graduating with majors in philosophy or religion have chosen careers in law, medicine, social work, the ministry, computer science, environmental protection, human rights, journalism, communication, government, business, education, race relations, and applied ethics.

New studies have also shown that degrees in the Humanities, especially Philosophy, have great returns on investment .

Graduate school

Students have pursued graduate study in philosophy, religious studies, theology, history, psychology, linguistics, anthropology, medicine, law, economics, public health, literature, and education.

Intellectual development and skills

Philosophy and religion courses are ideal for students who want to develop and improve writing and analytical skills. Students of philosophy or religion become more aware of themselves and the world around them. By raising questions that explore the basic principles of existence and ultimate human concerns, the study of philosophy or religion helps students develop many skills such as the ability to

  • reason clearly
  • extract what is essential from large amounts of information
  • understand and analyze complicated texts
  • develop a well-structured argument
  • express ideas in a clear and persuasive manner
  • solve problems

Why Study Philosophy in DC?

Our location in the heart of DC provides:

  • Easy access to Smithsonian Institutions, museums, national monuments, and the Library of Congress
  • A wealth of varied and diverse internship and service opportunities with the federal government and non-profit organizations
  • Opportunities to see and participate in political life and history as it happens

Why Choose AU?

At American University, our graduate and undergraduate programs prepare students to enter into the field of professional philosophy or many fields of postgraduate education. Besides teaching the classics of historical and contemporary philosophical thought and important philosophical developments, many classes are devoted to the application of philosophy to issues concerning biomedicine, environmental protection, human rights, the media, business, and race relations. Alumni of our BA program pursue graduate work not only in philosophy but also in other fields such as history, psychology, linguistics, computer science, anthropology, and literature. Many positions in science and industry require the analytical skills gained through the study of philosophy. In addition, the Philosophy program emphasizes clear thinking, accurate writing, and problem solving as well as the application to today’s practical problems. These skills are excellent preparation for further study toward law, medicine, social work, the ministry, and other professional careers.

What Is Philosophy?

The best way to find an answer to this question is to take one or two philosophy courses (as part of your general education requirements). However, for those of you looking for an instant answer, philosophy is the study of ideas, whether moral, legal, religious, or aesthetic. Philosophers explore the nature of the real world, the basis of human values, and the foundations of reason. Students at American University approach these issues by studying texts from different periods as well as from different regions. For example, students study both historical literature and contemporary developments in Western and Asian philosophy as well as other traditions such as the Latin American and African.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 4WD – Review – Car and Driver

#

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 4WD

“It’s a bit like driving a shipping container,” said our U.K.-based passenger. He didn’t mean it as a compliment. If you’d never driven a Chevy Tahoe. you, too, might be shocked by its gargantuan size and 5756 pounds. Shipping containers are spacious and useful, though, and so is the new Tahoe.

Much of this SUV’s appeal stems from its politically incorrect size. It’s a Big Mac in a world going vegan. Big on this scale means you don’t have to bother organizing your dog kennels, antique firearms, and stuffed elephants; just throw everything in back, it’ll all fit. Don’t like who’s riding shotgun? No worries. A console as big as a coffee table keeps the driver and front passenger from violating any restraining orders. And there’s even more than an inch-and-a-half additional front-seat headroom versus the previous model, too, so leave on that Stetson, Tex.

All that bigness is born of the Tahoe’s full-size pickup origins. Chevy introduced a redesigned Silverado last year. and the Tahoe inherits the many structural enhancements that Chevy bestowed upon its reborn pickup. New body and boxed-frame designs improve structural rigidity, and a higher percentage of high-strength steel helps keep the weight in check.

So ritzy is the Tahoe’s new interior, particularly in LTZ guise, that Chevrolet claims that your baby sitter will demand a raise.

Despite these claims, quivers still ripple through the structure. Bolted to the frame is an independent front suspension, while a live rear axle with coil springs benefits from the Silverado’s slightly wider track. Unlike the Silverado, though, the Tahoe offers constantly adjusting magnetorheological shocks. Now in its third generation, Magnetic Ride Control is standard on and exclusive to the top-level LTZ trim. These dampers help round off bumps and keep the body from bobbing excessively. But on choppy freeways and with 20-inch wheels, the Tahoe jitters as if it’s had one too many shots of espresso.

Electrically assisted steering, chosen for its simplicity and fuel-economy benefit, is also new. Light steering helps make the Tahoe wieldier than its prodigious shadow might suggest, and the 39-foot turning circle shows it to be more maneuverable than you’d expect. But don’t get the idea that the Tahoe is in any way city friendly, unless, of course, it’s wearing police- or fire-department livery.

Another Silverado hand-me-down is the 5.3-liter V-8. Now equipped with direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation, and featuring an aluminum block, this small-block V-8 makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It channels this output through a six-speed automatic with manual override and a towing mode that holds gears longer, downshifts sooner, and could be labeled “sport” if it were in something sportier than the Tahoe.

Acceleration to 60 mph takes 7.1 seconds, and the quarter passes in 15.6 at 91 mph. That’s plenty of poke to easily merge onto a freeway. Tahoe buyers who like to haul will probably gloss over our acceleration figures, wanting to know the Tahoe’s towing capacities. Four-wheel-drive versions can hitch up to 8400 pounds; two-wheel drive, 8600 pounds. What those looking to tow shouldn’t ignore are the Tahoe’s strong, fade-free brakes. Stops from 70 mph took 176 feet, a number that would be respectable for a family sedan. Fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg city and 22 highway for a four-wheel-drive edition like the one here; we recorded 15 mpg over 329 miles of driving.

For the first time in the Tahoe’s history, the front doors aren’t shared with the Silverado. This allowed designers to create a distinctive look for the ute, with abundant right angles in the greenhouse bestowing a sharp, expensive look. Running from the front fender to the taillights is a bone-line crease that adds visual crispness and length. This latest Tahoe appears more elegant than its predecessor, which is important because our Tahoe LTZ’s price sailed right past $70,000.

Opening those front doors reveals a redesigned interior. A tall center console borrows some of the Silverado’s switchgear and easy-to-read analog instruments, but the Tahoe earns its own design. A 4.2-inch digital display between the gauges can show speed, trip-computer, or infotainment data, and it can be used to adjust settings. A vinyl-wrapped instrument panel looks rich, but the wood trim is bogus. If you want real wood, you’ll have to shop at the GMC store. At a steady 70 mph, we measured a luxury-car-like 68 decibels of noise, though a bit of wind rush can be heard rustling past the A-pillars, which punctures the illusion of blissful isolation from the outside world.

American Airlines apologizes after man alleges fat discrimination

SANTA ANA, Calif. — An Orange County man said he is outraged by the way he was treated on an American Airlines flight because he is overweight.

Chris Shelley claimed he was kicked off the plane because he weighs a few more pounds, reports CBS Los Angeles.

“The worst part was being treated as if I was some sort of criminal. Not only a criminal, but a fat criminal,” Shelley said.

The Huntington Beach engineer, who said he flies more than 100,000 miles a year, cannot help but wonder “if this is customer service, American Airlines shouldn’t be in business,” he said.

Shelley said his nightmare began after he boarded an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Orange County on Friday, when an elderly petite woman sat in the aisle seat next to him.

“She was clearly not particularly happy, got up and left and went towards the front of the aircraft,” Shelley said.

The retired Marine did not think anything of it until “a young gentleman in a vest with an American Airlines emblem on it turns to me and says: ‘Sir! You need to take your things and deplane immediately. Come with me.’ I was in shock,” Shelley said.

He said the employee told him the woman seated next to him complained he was too big for his seat. “They told me anyone over two inches in the seat cannot sit on the aircraft.”

Shelley said he was shocked when the airline did not offer a solution.

“They never once asked me or anyone else if we could switch seats. It was just simply – get off the plane!” He said after begging the employee to ask the woman, who complained about him, to just switch seats. She agreed. He was able re-board the plane.

American Airlines sent him two apology emails. A spokesperson said the company has launched an investigation.

How Long-Term Care Insurers Deny Benefits – Next Avenue #american #council

#

How Long-Term Care Insurers Deny Benefits

Here’s a heartbreaking scenario: Your parents or another loved one bought a long-term care insurance policy years ago and have paid its steep premiums ever since, but now that they need the benefits, the insurer refuses to pay them.

Sadly, this happens all too often, as I learned last week at the Aging in America 2014 conference of the American Society on Aging in San Diego.

“This is a big problem,” said Alan Kassan, a lawyer with Kantor Kantor in Northridge, Calif. whose firm represents long-term care policyholders on a contingency basis in their battles to get claims paid. “You pay for the insurance and when it’s time to collect the benefits, you get the bad news.”

Red Tape and Payment Difficulties

Corinne Chandler, a fellow lawyer at the firm, added: “We also handle life, disability and health insurance claims, but there’s no other area of the law where I’ve seen more red tape and difficulty getting claims paid.”

Kassan and Chandler said there are a number of ways you and your parents can get recalcitrant insurers to pay benefits, though. I’ll go through them in a moment.

I don’t want to leave the impression that all long-term care insurers are stingy about claims. They’re not.

Last year, 273,000 Americans received $7.5 billion in long-term care insurance benefit payments, according to the Association for Long Term Care Insurance (ALTCI). Benefit payments rose 13 percent from 2012, according to ALTCI’s director, Jesse Slome.

But with the average annual cost of an assisted living facility at $41,400, a private room in a nursing home running $83,950 and a licensed home-health care aide charging around $19 an hour — according to the Genworth 2013 Cost of Care Survey — all long-term care insurance policyholders should receive the benefits they’re due.

How Long-Term Care Policies Have Changed

You should know that long-term care policies from the 1990s were often written much differently than today’s version. That’s one reason why people with older contracts — precisely the ones now trying to get benefits paid — sometimes run into trouble.

Back then, regulation of the long-term care industry was lax and many policies were “poorly written,” said Chandler. Assisted living facilities were fairly new, so policies generally didn’t specifically cover them.

Instead, the contracts provided nursing home coverage or home health care coverage. And even the definition of “home” was vague.

Now that assisted living facilities have grown in popularity, they’re usually included in current long-term care policies.

“The policies written in the last 10 years or so typically provide comprehensive coverage,” said Chandler.

The key to getting long-term care benefits paid on most recent policies is that the insured is unable to perform two or more activities of daily living (ADLs) — eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring to or from a bed or chair and continence.

Here are four ways Kassan and Chandler have seen insurers deny or delay benefits and how to avoid or handle them:

Ineligible Care Provider

If the insured person is in a nursing home or an assisted living facility, that operator must prove to the long-term care insurer that it’s an “eligible care provider.”

In some cases, the policy requires that the facility have a specific license and the appropriate personnel and care.

“If you’re considering placing a loved one in a facility, find out in advance if it meets the criteria of that person’s policy,” said Chandler. “You don’t want to move someone in and then have to move them out because the insurance doesn’t pay for that facility. That’s something we see happen all the time.”

Some insurers will insist that a facility meets their current criteria even though that criteria wasn’t specified in the policy. In this case, challenge the decision. “If the policy wasn’t written that way, they can’t interpret it to deny you coverage,” said Chandler.

No Prior Hospitalization

This is sometimes known as “the gatekeeper provision” and often appears in older long-term care policies. This wording requires that a policyholder had hospitalization confinement, a nursing home stay or both before claims would be paid.

But most states have outlawed these provisions for many years.

No Benefits for Personal Care

Some insurers may say they won’t pay benefits for “personal” care such as light housekeeping or errands a caregiver must run for the policyholder. “But you can often get these benefits paid even if the insurer says otherwise, as long as the insured meets the policy’s ADL requirements,” said Kassan.

Most policies also exclude care provided by family members, but you should scrutinize the policy’s wording on this. “Last week, I had case where the policy excluded care from the insured’s spouse, siblings or those related by marriage,” said Chandler. “But the person providing care was the policyholder’s granddaughter, so that care should be paid for.”

Failure to Pay Claims Due to Cognitive Impairment

Sometimes, benefits are denied because the policyholder has forgotten to pay the premiums due to his or her cognitive impairment. But “in most states, you have up to five months before a policy can lapse because premiums weren’t paid,” said Chandler. “If you can get a physician’s statement during that time demonstrating your parent is cognitively impaired, the insurer will reinstate the policy.”

7 Tips for Getting Benefits Paid

Kassan and Chandler also had seven tips for anyone planning to file a claim for a long-term care policy:

1. Have your parent sign a statement authorizing you to act on his or her behalf in policy disputes. “It doesn’t need to be a power of attorney — just a statement that’s signed,” said Chandler. It may be too late for you to do this if your parent is suffering from dementia, of course.

2. Never submit a claim without first reading the policy closely. “Otherwise, you may wind up characterizing a claim in a way that prejudices your ability to get benefits paid,” said Kassan. “If you read the policy first, you’ll be able to characterize the claim properly.”

If you don’t have, or can’t find, the policy, ask the insurer to send one. Ideally, it will.

3. When filing a claim, don’t feel confined to include only the information the claim form asks for. “Don’t be constrained by the boxes on the form,” said Kassan.

Feel free to submit as much as evidence as you need to substantiate your claim, such as information from your parent’s physician or caregiver. “It’s a good idea to submit a physician’s ‘certification of necessity of treatment’ or ‘plan of care,’” said Kassan. “Sometimes that’s required, but it’s good to include even if it isn’t.”

4. If you’re having trouble getting the insurer to pay a claim, put it in writing and send the letter to the company. Don’t try to resolve a problem over the phone.

“A letter doesn’t leave room for ambiguity the way a phone call does,” said Kassan. “If the insurer makes an unreasonable demand, like saying you need a power of attorney to represent your parent, send a letter saying ‘You instructed us that we need power of attorney. Please provide the authority for that.’ With this kind of paper trail, there’s no doubt what was said.”

5. If you plan to hire a home health aide from an agency, make certain the aide will keep what are known as “daily care notes.” Insurers often demand these before approving home-care claims, said Chandler.

6. Be with your parent when the insurer sends someone out to do an assessment to determine whether to pay benefits. Otherwise, your parent might be too proud to tell the interviewer what he is unable to do — such as dressing, feeding or bathing himself — which could lead to claims being denied.

If you’re there, you can set the record straight. “You might say: ‘Mom, you do need help getting into the shower,’” said Chandler. Then have your parent prove it during the assessment.

7. Tell your parent’s insurer that you want to be a third party designee and receive a copy of any lapse notices. This way, if your mom or dad doesn’t make the premium payment, you’ll know and can remedy the situation.

Kentucky Set to Face American in First Round of NCAA Tournament

UKNOW University of Kentucky News

LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the 11th-consecutive season, the No. 24 Kentucky Wildcats will compete in the NCAA tournament, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for the first round with a match against American University, the 2015 Patriot League champions. The winner will face either Ohio State or Robert Morris in the second round for the right to advance to the Lexington Region Dec. 11-12.

Kentucky and American will face off at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday. The Wildcats and Eagles have only faced one another once in the past, in which Kentucky fell in five sets in 2004. Ticket information and additional details regarding live stats, video and audio will be announced later this week.

“We’ve got a really competitive group here,” 11th-year head coach Craig Skinner said. “I feel like we’ve really ironed out some things the past few weeks in practice and we’ve got some momentum. They know it’s a long season and heading into the post season I think that they’re refreshed and ready to go.”

The Wildcats will travel to host Ohio State, an at-large bid from the BIG Ten and the No. 12 overall seed in the tournament. UK has an all-time record against the Buckeyes of 5-7, with the last meeting ending in a four-set loss in the second round of the 2014 NCAA tournament.

UK has never played Robert Morris, the winners of the Northeast Conference, in volleyball.

With the appearance, Kentucky reaches the NCAA tournament for the 17th time in program history. UK has advanced to the field of 64 in all 11 seasons under the direction of Skinner. UK joins Colorado State, Florida, Hawai’i, Nebraska, Penn State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas and Washington as the only other programs to advance to the tournament in each of the past 11 seasons.

The tournament berth provides a special opportunity, as Kentucky’s Memorial Coliseum will play host to the NCAA Regionals Dec. 11-12. UK is one of four sites selected for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchups with one team advancing to the Final Four in Omaha, Neb. from the Lexington Region. This marks the third time in five seasons Memorial Coliseum will host this premier volleyball event.

The trip to the tournament adds on to the list of recent successes by the Wildcat program. The team has won at least 17 matches in each of the past 11 seasons, with the team reaching the 20-win mark in eight of the past nine years.

The Wildcats finish the regular season leading the conference in blocks per set and ranking second in opponent hitting percentage while ranking No. 19 in the nation in blocks per set. Additionally, sophomore middle Kaz Brown ranks No. 2 in the nation in blocks per set and third nationally in total blocks.

UK boasts four players who earned All-Southeastern conference recognition this season in senior Morgan Bergren, Brown and classmate Ashley Dusek and freshman Brooke Morgan. Dusek headlined the group, earning SEC Libero of the Year and being named to the All-SEC team. Brown and Bergren both were named to the All-SEC team, while Morgan made the SEC All-Freshman team. With the distinctions, Kentucky has now won five of the last six Libero of the Year awards and has placed at least one person on the All-Freshmen team in 11-straight seasons.

Flying for dollars: American Airlines changing AAdvantage loyalty program

Share via Facebook Share via Twitter Share via LinkedIn Share via Email

American Airlines is revamping its AAdvantage loyalty program in the second half of 2016, shifting how passengers earn award miles to dollars spent rather than distance flown.

Award redemption rates will be adjusted with some award levels increasing, while others decrease, airline representatives said in a conference call Tuesday.

Additionally, Fort-Worth-based American (Nasdaq: AAL) will offer the best elite-level mile multipliers in the industry and simplify the elite qualification process, Suzanne Rubin, president of AAdvantage, said on the conference call.

“We have studied the marketplace, and we’ve put forward changes that we feel better construct the program,” Rubin said.

American Airlines has spent the last two years focusing on integration after its merger with US Airways, Rubin said. Now, the airline is laying the foundation for the future of the AAdvantage program to ensure it’s rewarding its most loyal customers, she said.

In the second half of 2016, when traveling on flights marketed by American, members will begin earning award miles based on the price of the ticket purchased and that member’s status level.

AAdvantage members will receive five miles for every U.S. dollar spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed fees. Gold members will receive seven miles, Platinum members will receive eight and Executive Platinum members will receive 11 miles per dollar spent.

Until the new structure takes effect, members will still earn award miles based on the distance flown.

American is extending its bonus miles promotion that allows members to earn even more on first- or business-class tickets they purchase. Click here for more information.

In March 2016, some award redemption levels will be reduced by as much as 40 percent for AAdvantage members, including some destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Award redemption levels on other routes, such as some flights to Europe and Asia, will increase due to changes to market pricing and demand, Rubin said.

“Some award levels will go up,” she said, “and some will go down.”

American Airlines Completes Electronic Flight Bag Implementation

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — American Airlines has completed the successful rollout of its industry-leading Electronic Flight Bag program with the discontinuation of paper revisions to terminal charts, making it the first major commercial airline to fully utilize tablets in all cockpits during all phases of flight. In April, American completed testing on its Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft and has secured FAA approval to use the Apple iPad on all of its current fleet types Boeing 777, 767, 757, 737 and MD-80.

An Electronic Flight Bag, which replaces more than 35 pounds of paper-based reference material and manuals that pilots often carried in their carry-on kitbag, offers numerous benefits for American and its pilots.

“Our Electronic Flight Bag program has a significant positive environmental and cost-savings impact,” said David Campbell, American’s Vice President Safety and Operations Performance. “In fact, removing the kitbag from all of our planes saves a minimum of 400,000 gallons and $1.2 million of fuel annually based on current fuel prices. Additionally, each of the more than 8,000 iPads we have deployed to date replaces more than 3,000 pages of paper previously carried by every active pilot and instructor. Altogether, 24 million pages of paper documents have been eliminated.”

All American pilots now enjoy the benefits associated with replacing their heavy kitbags one of the airline’s biggest sources of pilot injuries with a 1.35-pound iPad. The digital format also requires less time to update each of the six or more paper manuals found in each pilot’s kitbag, as manual paper revisions take hours to complete every month, compared to the minutes it takes for electronic updates.

“Our focus on technological improvement throughout our operation has never been stronger as we continue to build the new American,” said Patrick O’Keeffe, American’s Vice President Airline Operations Technology. “As the first major commercial airline to successfully complete the Electronic Flight Bag transition across its fleet, we are proud to count this among our other successful programs that provide the tools our people need to perform their duties safely and efficiently.”

As part of the Electronic Flight Bag program, American’s pilots use mobile software and data from Jeppesen, a unit of Boeing Digital Aviation. The FAA-approved Jeppesen Mobile Terminal Chart application is allowed for gate-to-gate use throughout all phases of flight and, with the exception of a few select documents, replaces paper operating manuals with up-to-date electronic information that is easier to access.

We congratulate American Airlines on the success of its Electronic Flight Bag program,” said Jeppesen President Thomas Wede. “Working closely together on this program over several years, we take pride in American’s achievements as it continues to eliminate paper-based materials in the flight deck, reducing pilot workload and increasing operational efficiency in a competitive business environment.”

American and the Allied Pilots Association (APA) began working on the feasibility of using a tablet device as an Electronic Flight Bag in June 2010, and American was the first commercial airline to receive FAA approval to use a tablet during all phases of flight in December 2011 on its Boeing 777 fleet. American has worked closely with its pilots throughout all phases of development that led to the program’s full integration.

Beginning July 10, American Eagle Airlines pilots will have the option to use Apple iPads to access reference material and manuals, making American Eagle one of the first regional carriers to adopt Electronic Flight Bags.

American Airlines

On April 15, 1926, Charles Lindbergh, Robertson Aircraft Corporation s chief pilot flew a bag of mail in a DH-4 biplane from Chicago to St. Louis. This flight is regarded as the first regularly scheduled flight of what was to become American Airlines. A big fleet flies passengers to over 250 destinations throughout the Americas. With almost 80 years experience around 94 million customers are flown to their destinations each year. American Airlines is a founding member of the oneworld Alliance, which brings together some of the best and biggest names in the airline business, enabling them to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on its own.

Why Fly with American Airlines

How to Check In

Online Check-In is available. You can check in online using your name and booking reference, you can request to have your boarding pass sent directly to your mobile phone, eliminating the need for paper. If you are travelling with infants you will only be able to check in at the airport check-in desks. You can check in online between 2 to 24 hours prior to the departure of your international flight When flying within the U.S. online check-in is available anytime between 1 and 24 hours prior to departure. Self-Service check-in machines at the airport offer a quick and convenient way to check in, select a seat, check bags, print a boarding pass and obtain an electronic receipt. International flights must check in at least 60 minutes before departure while travelling within the U.S. you must check in for your flight at least 30 minutes before departure.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

As with all airlines, there are restrictions when it comes to how much baggage you are allowed to check-in or take on board the flight. Always check with the airline before you travel. For up to date information on baggage allowance and charges, go to the American Airlines website.

How to Travel to Cuba If You Are an American

By Robert Curley. Caribbean Travel Expert

Islands have always been a part of my life: I was born on Long Island, and moved from there to Rhode Island — my current home, centered on the richness of Narragansett Bay — as a young adult. But I never had a true appreciation of island life until I visited the Caribbean. For me, that s the best part of being a travel writer — learning about local culture and history, meeting the real people that give a place its vitality and character.

Speaking of vital characters, the others in my personal story include my wife, Christine, son, Christopher, and daughter, Shannon. I m proud to say that we re a family of readers, writers, and explorers, and I look forward to sharing some of our past and future journeys with you. Read more

All Americans can now travel legally to Cuba — with some limitations.

You ll need to travel with a Cuba travel organization that has an official license from the U.S. State Department, like Insight Cuba  and Central Holidays .

And, while your tour may include stops at museums, historic sites, or even the Bay of Pigs or a local Communist Party block meeting, purely recreational activities — like visiting the beach or scuba diving — are prohibited from tour itineraries, which are limited to experiences that brings American and Cuban people together.

Schedules are typically packed with activities in order to comply with the State Department’s mandate and federal law, so it remains to be seen whether in practice travelers are able to slip away in their limited free time to visit Cuba s attractions on their own, take a dip in the Caribbean, or sample the local mojitos .

Insight Cuba, for example, is offering several options for Cuba travel, including a long weekend in Havana and seven-night trips that see more of the country. Tour prices include all lodging, activities, in-country transportation and meals, but not the cost of the necessary charter flight from Miami to Havana.

Other Ways to Travel to Cuba

Until and if the remaining aspects of the Cuba travel restrictions are lifted by the U.S. government, tours like these will be the only legal way for most Americans to visit the Caribbean island nation.

Of course, these restrictions don t apply to travelers from elsewhere in the world, and Cuba is among the most popular Caribbean destinations for travelers from Canada and Europe. A number of international hotel companies, such as Riu. Iberostar. and Melia. have built large resorts in Cuban destinations like Varadero that meet the expectations of savvy global travelers. More than 2 million tourists now visit Cuba annually.

Some Americans do travel illegally to Cuba. The Cuban government welcomes Americans to visit with a passport, but while Cuban customs and immigration officials once would agree not to stamp the passports of Americans entering the country, that is no longer the case. The most common way that Americans circumvent the Cuba travel ban is to fly to a third country that has regularly scheduled flights to Cuba, such as Canada. Mexico (Cancun is nearby and a popular Cuba gateway), or the Bahamas (Nassau). You can get a Cuban tourist card at airports in these countries, good for up to 30 days visiting Cuba.

Several companies located in Canada and elsewhere operate specifically to help Americans who want to travel independently to Cuba to book hotels and make other travel arrangements. Examples include USA Cuba Travel and CubaLinda .

Keep in mind, however:

  • If you are caught traveling illegally to Cuba (such as by a Customs agent spotting a Cuba entry or exit stamp in your passport), you could face hefty fines and an uncomfortable experience clearing U.S. customs.
  • Credit and debit cards issued by U.S. banks will not work in Cuba. That requires U.S. visitors to carry cash or travelers’ checks with them, which can be risky. Once in Cuba, dollars must be exchanged for special convertible Cuban pesos, a parallel currency to normal pesos that will make your visit extra expensive.
  • Cuba is ruled by an authoritarian, sometimes paranoid government. Many of the rights you are used to as a U.S. citizen don’t exist in Cuba.

Note: The U.S. Embassy in Havana reopened in August 2015, as full diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States have been restored. The embassy can help travelers to Cuba with:

  • applications for new U.S. passports or replacing stolen U.S. passports
  • renewing expired U.S. passports
  • registering U.S. citizens living in, traveling to, or born in Cuba
  • assisting U.S. citizens with voter registration and voting
  • providing federal income tax forms
  • providing services to notarize documents to be used in the United States
  • providing limited assistance to U.S. citizen prisoners in Cuba
  • assisting in the shipment of remains of deceased U.S. citizens to the United States
  • assisting with money wires to U.S. citizens in cases of emergency
  • helping coordinate medical evacuations

American Airlines: Focus On Margins Not Competitive Pricing – American Airlines

American Airlines: Focus On Margins Not Competitive Pricing

Summary

American Airlines continues to producing record profits off strong pretax margins.

The analyst community is overly focused on competitive pricing in select routes and not the complete income statement impact.

The legacy airline with the largest capital return remains the most attractive airline to own.

Despite record quarterly profits and substantial stock buybacks, American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL ) hasn’t seen any stock gains this year. Analysts are highly worried about the competitive pricing environment despite the ability of the airline to produce nearly $2 billion in Q3 profits alone.

In addition, the company finished integration of the reservation system setting the airline up for synergy benefits in 2016 that my previous research recommended as a buy signal for the stock. At $43, American Airlines trades at roughly 6.4x forward earnings leaving one struggling with why the long thesis is so difficult for the market.

Focus On Margins

The earnings call was ripe with analysts gnashing teeth on walk-up ticket prices and the willingness of the airline to compete with ultra-low-cost-carriers like Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ:SAVE ). The odd part of the story is the unwillingness of the market to focus on what ultimately counts: pretax margins.

This exchange on the earnings call particularly highlights the mindset of analysts that doesn’t jive with the bottom line performance:

Yeah. Love to do that. So okay, it’s clear that you guys have concluded that ULCCs are a long-term threat in your market and they need to be dealt with and fine. That’s your decision to make. But how do we know that you guys aren’t totally blowing up yourself in the process of defending them, causing long-term damage on the pricing side while you’re doing what you think you need to do to match them on fares.

. we’re pretty happy with our results so far, in markets where we’ve matched ultra-low-cost carriers, our RASM performance has been the same as it has been in the rest of our domestic system. So we’ve performed just as well. What we’ve done is we’re running much higher load factors, particularly on formerly off-peak flights. We’ve done a really good job so far of directing that traffic to formerly off-peak flights running higher load factors, running lower yields.

But our RASM performance even in the short-term has been equivalent to the RASM performance we’ve had in the rest of the system. And there probably are opportunities to fine-tune it, but that’s normal course of business stuff that we do, and it’s not going to be a meaningful change in terms of the number of seats.

The management team successfully brought the airline out of bankruptcy, completed the merger with U.S. Airways, and integrated the reservation systems without any major mishaps. The market though isn’t willing to reward this management group by only focusing on metrics such as ticket prices for walk-up customers in competitive non-stop routes.

The end result is a stock trading at the lowest PE ratio of the legacy carriers off ultra-low earnings expectations for next year. The airline forecast pretax margins of 12 to 14% for Q4 that American Airlines recently rehashed after releasing the October traffic report .

As a comparison, Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL ) forecast margins of 16 to 18%. American still needs to generate more synergies from the merger including the integrated pricing and efficient use of airplanes that will take at least 18 months to fully implement. These synergies will close this gap.

At the same time, investors needs to understand that the impact from Love Field and the additional competition with Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV ) is a bigger direct impact to American than the other legacy airlines.

Capital Returns

One of the biggest signs that the airline industry is different this time around is the capital returns to shareholders. All of the legacy airlines are either paying dividends or repurchasing shares or both.

In the case of American Airlines, the company is aggressively repurchasing shares. In fact, the airline has easily spent a larger percentage of the market value on capital returns than the other legacy airlines.

AAL Net Common Payout Yield (NYSE:TTM ) data by YCharts

During Q3, American Airlines repurchased $1.63 billion of stock at an average price of $40.56. The airlines has returned an incredible $2.7 billion to shareholders the first nine of this year alone. Keep in mind that the stock is only valued at roughly $27.4 billion.

The prime example of value is that Delta is only returning roughly 7% of the market cap to shareholders via dividends and stock buybacks. United Airlines (NYSE:UAL ) that completed the merger with Continental years prior to the American Airlines merger is returning less than 4% to shareholders.

With the general perception that the airline sector is extremely cheap, American is the only legacy airline that spent the last year proving that to shareholders. Either the other airlines don’t see the value or the company doesn’t have the money.

Takeaway

The key takeaway is to let analysts focus on pricing competition in a few markets while American Airlines focuses on the long-term value of the stock. The airline continues generating massive profits and substantial margins that feed the capital return programs. The recommendation remains to continue buying alongside the airline with the massive stock buyback program.

American Airlines Center Ticket Information

The American Airlines Center is a multi-purpose arena in downtown Dallas that was opened in 2001. It is owned by the City of Dallas, and is the premier spot for live events in the Metroplex. The AAC can hold up to 19,200 seated falls for basketball and 21,000 fans for concerts.

The building replaced the tired old Reunion Arena that the teams had used since the 1980s with a state-of-the-art facility that features high-tech sound and P.A. systems, high definition video boards, more than 18,000 seats and an extensive cooling system that can keep ice frozen in the hot Texas climate. The arena sits in a developing area of town called Victory, which was once populated by rail yards and power plants – the American Airlines Center is just one of many new construction projects that has sparked the renewal of urban areas surrounding downtown Dallas. The arena is just one of many new projects going up in the Victory development that will change the landscape of downtown Dallas.
