How to Form a Michigan Nonprofit Corporation

Setting up an llc in michigan Setting up an llc in michigan

Most nonprofits are 501(c)(3) organizations, which means they are formed for religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes and are eligible for federal and state tax exemptions. To create a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, first you need to form a Michigan nonprofit corporation. Then you apply for tax-exempt status from the IRS. Here are the details.

Form Your Michigan Nonprofit Corporation

First, you must form a nonprofit corporation under Michigan state law.

1. Choose who will be on the initial board of directors.

In Michigan, your nonprofit corporation must have at least three directors. You can have one or more directors on the board who are 16 or 17 years old, as long as this is stated in your articles and that number doesn t exceed 50% of the number of directors required for a quorum. The initial board of directors will play a key role in determining the purpose and goals for the organization.

2. Choose a name for your Michigan nonprofit corporation.

The name of your nonprofit corporation cannot be the same as, or confusingly similar to, the name of another corporate name on file with the state. To see if your proposed name is available, you can search Michigan’s name database available on the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs ( LARA ) website.

3. Prepare and file your nonprofit articles of incorporation.

You will need to create and file nonprofit articles of incorporation with the state. There is a fillinable articles form available on the LARA website. You should complete the form following the instructions provided. The articles of incorporation must include the following basic information about your nonprofit:

  • its name
  • its purpose (a general statement for all lawful activities is not sufficient)
  • whether it is organized on a stock or nonstock basis
  • whether it is a membership or directorship organization
  • the street and mailing address of the corporation s registered office
  • the name and address of the initial resident agent
  • the names and addresses of all the incorporators, and
  • its duration.

The articles form on the LARA website does not include language required by the IRS to obtain tax-exempt status. To receive 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the IRS, you’ll need to have additional specific language in your articles, including:

  • a statement of purpose that meets IRS requirements
  • statements that your nonprofit will not engage in prohibited political or legislative activity, and
  • a dissolution of assets provision dedicating your assets to another 501(c)(3) organization upon dissolution.

Be sure to include the IRS-required language in your articles. For more information on IRS requirements for tax exemption, see IRS Publication 557, Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization, available on the IRS website.

4. Prepare bylaws for your Michigan nonprofit corporation.

You’ll need to prepare bylaws that comply with Michigan law and contain the rules and procedures your corporation will follow for holding meetings, electing officers and directors, and taking care of other corporate formalities required in Michigan. Your bylaws do not need to be filed with the Michigan Bureau of Commercial Services — they are your internal operating manual.

5. Hold a meeting of your board.

Your first board meeting is usually referred to as the organizational meeting of the board. The board should take such actions as:

  • electing directors (if not named in your articles)
  • approving the bylaws
  • appointing officers
  • setting an accounting period and tax year, and
  • approving initial transactions of the corporation, such as the opening of a corporate bank account.

Be sure to keep minutes of your meeting that properly document your board s actions.

6. Set up a corporate records binder.

You should set up a corporate records binder for your nonprofit to hold important document such as articles of incorporation, bylaws, and minutes of meetings. For more information, as well as minutes forms, consent forms, and other resolutions, see Nonprofit Meetings, Minutes Records, by Anthony Mancuso (Nolo).

Obtain Your Federal and State Tax Exemptions

Now that you have created your nonprofit corporation, you can obtain your federal and Michigan state tax exemptions. Here are the steps you must take to obtain your tax-exempt status:

1. File your Form 1023 federal tax exemption application.

To obtain federal tax-exempt status from the IRS, you will need to complete and file IRS Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This long and detailed form asks for lots of information about your organization, including its history, finances, organizational structure, governance policies, operations, activities, and more. For line-by-line instructions on how to complete the Form 1023, see How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation, by Anthony Mancuso (Nolo).

Smaller nonprofits may be eligible to file Form 1023-EZ, Streamlined Application for Recognition of Exemption under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This is a much simpler, shorter form that is filed online. Only smaller nonprofits–those with projected annual gross receipts of less than $50,000 and total assets of less than $250,000–are eligible to use the streamlined 1023-EZ application.

See the IRS website for more information on the Form 1023 and Form 1023-EZ filing requirements.

2. Obtain your Michigan state tax exemptions.

Once you have your federal tax exemption, you are automatically exempt from Michigan state income tax. In addition, there is no longer an application process for tax exemption from Michigan sales and use tax. See the Michigan Department of Treasury for more information on state tax exemptions for nonprofits.

3. Other state reporting and registration requirements.

Depending on your activities and the size of your organization, you may need to register with the Michigan Attorney General before doing any fundraising activities. Check with Michigan’s Attorney General website for registration rules.

How to Prepare – Paint Metal Outside Doors, Home Guides, SF

How to Prepare Paint Metal Outside Doors

Painting an exterior door

Paint the hinge side of the door with exterior paint as well as the door.

A painted exterior door that contrasts with the house s color creates a welcoming appearance for your home s entryway. As you select the color for the door, choose a high-quality exterior latex or oil paint. You are going to paint the outer portion of the door itself, as well as the edges that are visible from the outside when the door is open. Most door warranties require that the top and bottom edges of the door have a coat of paint as well to avoid voiding the warranty.

Remove the door from its hinges. Put the pointed tip of a center punch under the door hinge. Tap the punch with a hammer to force the door pin up through the hinge. Grasp the door pin with a pair of pliers and pull it on out. Repeat with the other hinges.

Lay the door on a flat work surface or a pair of sawhorses.

Remove the door handle and locks from the door or mask them with painter’s tape. Apply painter’s tape to any other areas of the door that you are not painting, such as window openings.

Wipe the entire exterior portion of the door with mineral spirits, dipping in a clean rag to remove debris from the door. Allow the mineral spirits to dry to the point where you can no longer smell them.

Roughen the surface of the base coat of paint with 220-grit sandpaper. Use a light touch as you sand; you do not want to remove the base coat.

Mix a few drops of dish detergent in a gallon bucket of warm water. Wipe the entire surface of the door with the soapy mixture. Rinse it with clean water. Allow the door to dry.

Apply a coat of primer to the door with a short-nap roller. Use a paintbrush to cut in around trim features and along the edges of the door. Allow the primer to dry. The temperature and humidity affect drying time. Follow guidelines on the can of primer.

Give the metal door a coat of paint in the color you selected. If the door has a simulated wood grain, paint with the grain. Use the short-nap roller to apply the paint. If there are ridges, smooth them out with a paintbrush. Paint the recessed panels first. Next, paint the vertical centerpiece, which is the mullion. Follow that by painting the horizontal pieces, or the rails. Finish with the outside edges. Allow the exterior paint time to dry, following the paint manufacturer’s guidelines.

Paint a second coat on the door in the same order as the previous step. Allow it to dry as well.

Remove the painter’s tape. Hang the door back on its hinges.

What Can I Do with an Associate – s Degree in

#

What Can I Do with an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education?

Completing an associate’s degree program in elementary education may prepare graduates for a job as an elementary school aide, or it may just be a precursor to earning more education in the field. Read on to find out what options are available to graduates of an associate’s degree program in elementary education. Schools offering Elementary Education degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What is an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education?

Most elementary school teachers are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree, as a 4-year degree is needed to gain teacher certification in most states. For this reason, an associate’s degree in elementary education alone cannot provide individuals with the academic credentials necessary to work as educators in public and private schools. However, many community colleges still offer 2-year, associate’s degree programs in elementary education. While these programs alone cannot prepare students to become teachers, they can prepare them for other opportunities.

While enrolled in an associate’s degree in elementary education, students should learn the basics of primary education. They may examine a variety of topics, including educational techniques and classroom technology. Graduates of such a degree program may enter the educational workforce as teaching aides or assistants or pursue higher education in a related field. Below are a couple of employment and educational options available to those with an associate’s degree in elementary education.

Important Facts About Teacher Assistants

Become an Elementary School Aide

Elementary school aides, sometimes referred to as teacher aides or assistants, are responsible for assisting teachers with a wide range of classroom tasks. These tasks allow teachers to focus their energy on planning and implementing lessons. Aides may help move students between school locations, supervise students and prepare materials for classroom lessons. In some cases, aides may assist in the grading of projects and homework. Although many aides only hold high school diplomas, some states require aides to hold degrees from accredited 2-year college programs.

Earn Further Education in the Field

Many graduates of associate’s degree programs in elementary education can choose to continue their studies at a 4-year university. Credits earned in such a program may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree program in the field. Bachelor’s degree programs build upon the knowledge gained in associate’s degree programs and help prepare students to pass a teaching certification exam. Teachers may continue their education by earning a master’s degree in elementary education or in a more specific field. In general, a higher education level translates into higher pay.

Pensioners face risks selling annuities, says FCA – BBC News #selling

Pensioners face risks selling annuities, says FCA

Significant risks face those who decide to sell a retirement income – such as running out of money in old age, the City watchdog has said.

A market for people to sell their annuity will be launched in April 2017, meaning pensioners can exchange their set retirement income for a lump sum.

The government estimates that 300,000 people will cash in their products.

Now the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has outlined the dangers that could result from selling up.

Concerns include individuals struggling to calculate what a good value for their annuity might be, vulnerability to scams, and people with debts being put under pressure to sell their annuity to settle the bill.

Tax bill

An estimated five million people in the UK have an annuity – a retirement income bought with pension savings.

As an extension to the pension reforms allowing people to cash in their pension pot before retirement, people who have already bought an income for life with their pension pots will be able to reverse that deal.

Currently, it is possible to sell an annuity, but a tax charge of between 55% and 70% makes it an impractical option for most people.

From April 2017, individuals who receive a lump sum from selling their annuity will only pay tax at their highest marginal income tax rate.

The Treasury is expecting a tax windfall of £960m over the first two years of the scheme, owing to the tax collection of an estimated £3,200 per annuity seller.

Protection

The FCA has now warned that “there is a significant risk of poor outcomes” for consumers selling their annuities.

Christopher Woolard, director of strategy and competition at the FCA, said: “We recognise that some consumers may be particularly vulnerable.

“We have set out proposed rules and guidance that will help ensure that consumers have an appropriate degree of protection should they decide to sell their annuity income.”

Those proposals include:

  • A requirement for sellers to seek financial advice for annuities over a certain value
  • An extension to the government-backed, free Pensions Advisory Service
  • Sellers to be given specific warnings of the risks early in the selling process
  • Consent to be gained by a broker from anyone else who would benefit from the annuity, such as a spouse, before it is sold
  • Brokers and advisers to set out their charges upfront to customers
  • A 14-day cancellation period and access to the Financial Ombudsman if sellers are unhappy

Tom McPhail, head of retirement policy at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “This is a complex market to create from scratch; however, we know that many annuity holders will be interested in trading in their income for a lump sum.

“The FCA has come up with a good package of measures to try and protect investors, while also giving them the freedom to manage their own money.”

Others are more sceptical.

“There are a number of missing pieces to make this brand new market work efficiently,” said Steven Cameron, pensions director at Aegon.

“There is no central point for consumers to offer up their annuity to a range of buyers, with consumers instead being encouraged to approach each buyer separately to get the best deal.

“Each potential buyer may demand their own medical evidence which will be timely and costly.”

The Association of British Insurers said there was a number of issues to work through in “limited” time before April 2017.

HVAC Salary #how #to #become #an #hvac #tech

HVAC Salary

HVAC salary is influenced by several factors. The most significant is location, because factors such as variations in regional climate and need for air purification directly influence demand for HVAC techs to service heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Economic factors also vary widely by location, with urban areas tending to pay higher salaries and wages than rural areas.

Experience and specialization also impact HVAC salary on an individual level. HVAC technicians who work in newer technologies, such as solar energy and water heating, have less competition and may charge higher rates.

Another factor influencing HVAC salary is the scope of work contracted to the technician. Although most HVAC technicians are able to perform both installations and maintenance, those specializing in maintenance usually receive more steady work. This is because HVAC installation usually depends on the amount of construction being completed at any given time, while existing HVAC systems require maintenance year-round.

How Much do HVAC Technicians Make?

These are some general HVAC salary figures on a national level:

Maximizing HVAC Technician Salary Potential

There are several things an HVAC tech can do to earn the highest possible salary. By manipulating the factors that influence HVAC salary, technicians can ensure they are earning the highest pay they are entitled to.

Relocating Since location is the largest factor that influences HVAC technician salaries, techs can increase their pay by relocating to a state or city that pays higher rates for the same level of expertise. However, since living costs are generally higher in these areas as well, it is smarter to work in higher-paying areas while living in a lower-cost area within commuting distance. For example, HVAC professionals who service Manhattan but live in less expensive areas of New York benefit the most from Manhattan s higher salary rates.

Becoming Certified Attaining one of the available HVAC certifications is a good way for less experienced technicians to work their way up the chain by establishing themselves as experts in one or more areas of HVAC. Certifications make technicians more attractive to employers, allowing them to earn higher pay than uncertified HVAC techs.

Getting More Education Higher levels of education also make HVAC technicians more attractive to employers, with degree-holding technicians being more likely to gain more responsibility and higher salaries.

Learn the skills you need to succeed as an HVAC Technician at home, at your own pace.

Become fluent in the mechanical and electrical processes of most common types of HVAC equipment.

Hoi An Town Beach Guide Accommodation, Hotels Resorts #travel #planning

Hoi An

Hoi an is a charming little riverside town famed for its beautiful old buildings, its narrow, quiet streets and its history as a merchant trading post. As the citizens of the town grew richer from trading with China, Japan and the rest of Southeast Asia, they spent their money on building attractive houses and pagodas.

It is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam, and rightfully so. The architecture in the town is beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed and the food fantastic. There is a long beach not far from the town and plenty of shops and tailors within the town that encourage travellers to stay for a while.

Despite the high numbers of tourists Hoi An manages to retain its charm – perhaps many of them stay hidden away inside the many hotels and resorts that fill the town. The main evidence is the number of shops and tailors lining the central streets, but even this doesn’t detract too much from the atmosphere.

In fact, many people come to Hoi An specifically for the tailors – reknowned throughout Viet Nam for their skill and value for money, they can produce just about any garment to order, be it a suit from $50, a copy of your favourite piece of clothing or a reproduction of a dress from a photo in a magazine.

The tailors are great value but it does pay to look around – examine the quality of the samples in their shop, and try visiting stores a little further away from the main tourist streets.

There are also a number of workshops in Hoi An for people who would like to learn to cook Vietnamese food, or perhaps to make their own silk lantern in the Hoi An style, which you can take home as gifts for friends and families.

Most of all though you can find a lot of pleasure in strolling around the quiet streets (as motorbikes and cars are banned from many of them), sitting quietly by the river, visiting museums and merchants houses and generally taking life at a slower pace than you might elsewhere in the country.

A great website about Hoi An is hoian.co.uk – The No Bull Travel Guide for Hoi An.

How Does an Online Travel Agency Work?

Other People Are Reading

Popularity of Online Travel Agencies Growing

Travel and tourism are among the biggest industries worldwide, and more than 80 percent of the travel sold in the United States is now purchased online. With more consumers using the Internet to plan their vacation getaways, online travel agencies have been growing in popularity, helping to increase business in the travel industry overall. Aside from booking travel packages, many travelers go online in search of travel reviews before making a final decision about their choices. Reports show that more travelers who have traditionally booked trips offline are checking out vacation destinations, as well as travel and hotel rates, online.

Working With a Known Travel Agency

The travel industry is a busy industry; therefore, many online travel agencies are working with established host agencies, which can provide marketing materials, along with experience in knowing what travelers are looking for. Being part of an affiliate program can help to increase an agency’s bookings and sales. Like other businesses putting up websites, going online allows travel agencies to reach a wider market of travel consumers.

Advantages to Consumers and Travel Agencies Both

Online travel agencies use automated processes to reduce costs and increase profitability, in addition to improving efficiency. While there are a variety of software tools available to assist businesses in saving time and selling more travel, online travel agencies offer several advantages to consumers. Would-be travelers have access to airlines, cruise lines, railways, hotels, tours and car rental companies all from a single source, allowing them to check out current travel discounts from the comfort of their own homes. Consumers can also benefit from special offers and promotions often offered online.

Consumers Need to Know What They Are Buying

Booking travel online can save consumers money, but you need to do your homework first. Before purchasing a travel package online, a consumer should be sure to read all the fine print. A dream vacation might not turn out to be what you are expecting. That’s why you need to know exactly what expenses are included in a package before buying. Frequently, hotel stays and some attractions are the only items included. Even so, the package may still be a good deal, but travelers need to know up front what other expenses will be involved. Consumers should always read reviews about any online travel agencies, from which they are considering purchasing. In many cases, comments made by other people who have purchased travel packages from the company can be read online. Consumers can also find out how a certain company has been rated by others.

Pet owners traveling domestically or internationally with their dogs have several options available when selecting an airline ticket for their pet. Select airlines allow dogs to fly in the passenger cabins or as checked luggage for a fee, though the animal must meet the airline’s restrictions. In most cases, the cost for a dog’s ticket varies based on the airline, flight length and size of the animal.

In-Cabin Dogs

Small dogs, typically those able to fit comfortably in a pet carrier stored under an aircraft seat, are able to travel in the passenger cabin on several airlines. The fee for in-cabin pets varies by airline. As of publication United, Delta and American Airlines charge $125 for flights in the United States and most international flights in North America; Spirit Airlines charges $100 for domestic flights; Southwest requires payment of $75 for each in-cabin pet; and AirTran’s pet fee is $69. Most airlines require advance reservations for pet travel, and in some cases taxes and fees are added to the cost of the dog’s in-cabin ticket.

Free Sample College Admission Essays #how #to #get #an #mba #for

#

On the surface I think I am like most young and modern American women: I take school seriously, I have dreams and goals for the future that I am determined to make happen, and I don’t expect anyone to do the hard work for me. I come from what is an increasingly normal background: my parents are divorced and I live with my mom and sisters and only occasionally see my dad since he now lives on the other side of the country, but I still feel very lucky to have a supportive, if spread out, family behind me. What makes me different from the rest of the crowd though is how I choose to fill my time away from school.

Sometimes a task can seem monumental when you try to visualize the entire thing, but if you break it down into smaller goals suddenly it can become manageable. When I first started to consider going to college so that I could make a better life for myself and my daughter, I thought it was going to be almost impossible. I was working in a convenience store trying to make ends meet as a single mother, but I just knew that there was something more out there for me.

My father always used to say to me: if you want people to respect you, first you must respect yourself . At this juncture in my life I see going back to school to earn a degree in nursing as a symbol of respecting myself and the goals I have set for myself. I have made sacrifices in my life that are common for many women: putting my husband s career before my own, and my child s life and growth before my own as well, and for many years these sacrifices have been worthwhile.

Many people enjoy building things with Legos when they are growing up, but usually not to the exclusion of all other activities. For me though, nothing was more fun that getting a picture in my mind’s eye and then being able to manifest it in reality using those ingenious little blocks, or any other substance that lent itself to my uses.

I was born and raised primarily in Medellin, Colombia, which is a land rich in beauty, but sadly for many of the people living there it is also a land of where poverty is a way of life. I am one of the few lucky ones who has never had to suffer the pains of an empty stomach, or had to struggle to make a living off the land with little or no education to back up my choices. However, if called upon to find a people with a better disposition or more welcoming spirits than those same indigenous people I grew up near, one would be very hard pressed.

Sometimes in life it just takes the influence of one person to help you see yourself in a whole new light. For me that person is my high school counselor Mr. Jones. I have been meeting with him twice a month for the past two years and the difference these meetings have made in my outlook in life, my goals for the future, and most importantly my self-confidence, is amazing.

When I first moved to the United States from Jakarta 8 years ago I was upset about leaving all of people I knew and loved behind me to follow my mother and brother here where we could find better “educational opportunities”. I resented the fact that my dad, who is a physician, had to stay in Jakarta to keep up his practice to fund this move, and that we would only be able to see him on the odd occasion he could get away long enough for the endless flight to Arizona, this land where we knew no one.

The curtains are swaying slightly before me and I know that they will soon part and a sea of faces will suddenly be before me, staring up with their eyes burning into mine, unseen because of the footlights, but felt nevertheless. My nervous energy is mounting, but this isn t the first time I have preformed on stage, and hopefully it won t be the last. I can remember decades ago in high school when I first began dancing in front of an audience.

There are many challenges facing my generation today: our nation is at war, there are people in our own extremely prosperous country who go to bed hungry every night, and this spring, when I will be lucky enough to graduate from one of the best private high schools in the country, there will be other students elsewhere in America who are also graduating even though they can’t read their own diploma.

When I think of ____ University, the aspects that most impress me and fan my desire to immerse myself in this prestigious learning environment are _____ University s excellent resources. In addition to having some of the most recognized and lauded faculty in world, ____ is committed to maintaining a diverse student population. As person of African heritage who grew up in Jamaica, and is now planning to embark on my university studies in the United States, I see this commitment to diversity as an essential element.

Rolling an IRA into a Health Savings Account #rolling #over #an

#

Rolling Over Retirement Savings to a Health Savings Account

I thought you could make a tax-free rollover from retirement savings into a health savings account, but my 401(k) administrator says that I can’t roll over my 401(k) into an HSA.

See Also: FAQs About Health Savings Accounts

You can make a tax-free rollover into an HSA from an IRA, but not from a 401(k), 457 or other retirement plan. However, if you have a 401(k) from a former employer, you may be able to make the move in two steps: Roll it over into an IRA first, then make a tax-free direct transfer from the IRA into your HSA.

You can then use the money in the HSA tax-free for medical expenses in any year. If you take money out of a traditional IRA to pay medical expenses (or anything else), you’ll have to pay taxes on the withdrawal and may have to pay a 10 percent penalty if you’re under 59½ (you can make penalty-free IRA withdrawals for medical expenses that are more than 10 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year, or more than 7.5 percent if you are 65 or older).

There are a few caveats: You can make a tax-free rollover from an IRA to an HSA only once in your lifetime, and you must qualify to make new HSA contributions that year (in 2016, you must have a health insurance policy with a deductible of at least $1,300 for individual coverage or $2,600 for family coverage). The size of the rollover is limited to the annual HSA contribution limit minus any money you’ve already contributed for the year. In 2016, you can contribute up to $3,350 to an HSA if you have individual coverage or $6,750 for family coverage, plus an extra $1,000 if you’re 55 or older anytime during the year. Contact your IRA and HSA administrator about making a direct transfer from one account to the other.

If you have the extra cash, it’s usually better to use new money for HSA contributions. That way, you can keep more money growing tax-deferred in your IRA and also take a tax deduction for new HSA contributions.

For more information about the tax rules, see IRS Publication 969, About Health Savings Accounts.

When to buy an airline ticket

[Voice of Kristin Arnold, Bankrate.com reporter]

Take VO: Before you take off. you can land the best deal on your airfare. When you’re talking tickets, timing is everything.  Here’s the rundown.

Departure: First and foremost, you need to buy your ticket a good 14 days in advance to score a good price.  To get the cheapest seats, before they sell out, buy a month or two in advance.  But don’t buy too early. since most airlines don’t start releasing cheaper seats until 3-4 months in advance for domestic flights and 4-5 months before international travel.

[Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com talking] “Most people are procrastinators. They book inside of 30 days of departure. In fact, most tickets are sold inside those days.  If you think about it from an airlines perspective, they have to hold back these seats for high paying business travelers. They’ve got to have a lot of trust that those business travelers will come in the last 14 days. And so, you really need to be buying that ticket no later than 14 days before departure.”

[Continue voice of Kristin Arnold] Business Class: Become business minded when buying your ticket. More airline tickets are sold from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. so airlines offer their best prices when people are more actively shopping.  Purchase volume is the highest on Tuesdays…which makes it the cheapest day of the week to buy.

Turbulence free Tuesday’s: According to Farecompare.com, Tuesday is also one of cheapest days to fly. along with Wednesday and Saturday. because they are the slowest air travel days.  The cheapest time to fly is usually the first flight out in the morning and the last flight out at night.

[Rick Seaney talking on camera]”If you at least take half your trip on those days, you get half the benefit. So, you know, leave on a Wednesday come back on a Sunday when you want to come back. Or leave on a Tuesday and come back on a Saturday. You’ll end up saving a lot of money.”

[Continue voice of Kristin Arnold] Don’t forget about the overnight “red eye” flights. another cheap option as they are neither comfortable nor convenient.

Flight data:  Just like you use your computer to track ticket prices, so do the airlines. In fact, if an airline notices that cheap seat sales are picking up, they can instantly raise prices. and drop them if sales are lagging. Since airfares can change all the time. taking advantage of email alerts offered by a variety of travel websites and airlines can help you get the best airfare bargains.

Deciding Between a Fixed Asset or an Inventory Management System #is

#

Deciding Between a Fixed Asset or an Inventory Management System

According to the State of Small Business report. an incredible 46% of small businesses don’t track their inventory or use a manual process to do so. Inventory and fixed assets are sometimes treated as assets on a company’s balance sheet, though not all assets are inventory. With these practices, it’s not surprising that about 1/2 of all new small businesses don’t survive past the first five years. Inventory and assets are actually very different things. Inventory is what is sold to make a profit, and assets are what help the company obtain, maintain and sell off their inventory. When deciding between a fixed asset or inventory management system, this difference is crucial to understand, particularly for brick and mortar companies .

The Basics

What’s the difference between the two? The key difference is that inventory is the materials, work-in-progress goods and finished products a company intends to sell to earn revenue. It is the company’s product, or it is a component used to create the company’s product. In order to stay in business, the company must sell inventory, send it into the distribution channel, or use it in production. Fixed assets, on the other hand, may be used in production of the company’s products, such as equipment or machinery, but they are not part of the company’s normal revenue stream or product line. They are rarely sold under a year’s time, unless the company is upgrading equipment or selling a facility or, in a worst case scenario, closing.

Wasp Inventory Control Tour

Why is keeping track of inventory important? Inventory is considered a “current asset” by the company’s accounting team, which means that the company plans to sell the asset in the short term.
Over time, some inventory may become obsolete, or there may be too much on hand to sell within a reasonable period. An inventory system must include the ability to identify excess and obsolete inventory so that the company can adjust for this slow moving or non-moving inventory. Conversely, if your on-hand inventory is too low, you may lose sales due to inability to meet demand. This is where knowledge of your inventory turnover ratio comes in handy.

Why is keeping track of fixed assets important? Fixed assets. also known as hard assets, are considered long-term assets on the balance sheet. This means that the company expects to profit from use of the asset for a long time often referred to as its useful life. However, fixed assets do have a finite useful life, and accountants must record the decline in usefulness (the assets’ value) by recording periodic depreciation. Over time, each asset’s value is reduced, but financial statements will continue to use the original cost of the asset rather than its current market value. To know how much value your assets are worth at any given time, you’ll need a tracking system.

Inventory: Inventory is products your business sells

Assets: Assets are items that you company owns and uses internally (computers, copy machines, software)

Tracking Systems

What do inventory tracking systems account for? There are several reasons to track inventory. One important function is to monitor sales. Inventory tracking systems can follow your products as they move in and out of stock or production, as well as when they sell it in order to calculate the cost of goods sold. You can also ensure the safety of your inventory (via surveillance or alarms) and maintain your inventory turnover ratio by ensuring the accuracy of your databases and eliminating excess stock. Unlike fixed asset management systems, inventory systems normally do not include the ability to plan and schedule maintenance on items in stock, even if such items would normally require periodic maintenance while they are in service. For example, companies that sell machinery and equipment don’t perform maintenance on the equipment in inventory, despite recommending that customers who use the equipment maintain it regularly. Equipment in inventory is not in use for its intended purpose, so it does not require maintenance until it is sold and the customer begins using it.

What do fixed asset systems need to track? A fixed asset system must have the ability to calculate and record each asset’s depreciation. The best fixed asset systems have multiple depreciation methods they can use to calculate periodic depreciation. The most common depreciation method is known as straight-line depreciation. which is the initial cost of an asset divided by its useful life. Other methods include double declining balance and sum of the year’s digits. To combat depreciation, fixed asset management systems should have the ability to track required and preventive maintenance on equipment. This allows companies to plan and schedule necessary repairs, calibrations, and tune-ups to equipment; thereby prolonging the useful life of its assets. Fixed asset systems that include enterprise asset maintenance answer this need. Finally, fixed asset management systems can monitor the check-out/check-in process of said assets according to company policy. Examples of fixed assets that can require a check-out/check-in process include durable tools or equipment such as computers or projectors. When fixed assets that go through these processes aren’t properly tracked, they can become lost, stolen or otherwise unprepared for use when needed. Private companies and the public sector alike can benefit from a centralized database that automates the tracking process.

Asset Tracking Software

When selecting a system to manage your company’s assets. it pays to understand whether what you own consists of consumable inventory or fixed assets, even if some of the processes and terminology are the same. You should never overlook the importance of maintaining records of these assets.

It may be helpful to work with a solution provider with expertise in both types of applications so they can discuss your company’s specific needs and guide you to the correct system.

How Much Does It Cost to Study an MBA? #how #much

How Much Does It Cost to Study an MBA? Costs and funding

2016-01-09 by Jennifer Weingarten

The costs of an MBA vary across different business schools, different programmes, and different countries. In this article, we want to examine what makes up these costs and how you should do your calculations if you are considering starting an MBA.

Tuition fee

The tuition fees for an MBA start at around 3.000 and can go up to 70.000 EUR per year.

The differences are huge and it is very hard to assess the quality of the programme by the tuition fee. A low tuition fee does not necessarily indicate a low quality of education, just as a high one does not guarantee it. A good idea is to check the accreditation of the programme from institutes like AACSB. AMBA and EQUIS. Accreditation from two or even all 3 of these institutions is a good indicator of high quality.

Worldwide, the average tuition fee for an MBA is around 25.000 – 30.000 EUR per year, for good quality MBA degrees from well-regarded Universities and Business Schools.

Study-related costs

Computer or laptop, software, books, subscriptions to journals, travel costs for study-related trips are all study-related costs that can occur while doing an MBA. It is important to check what exactly the tuition fee comprises: sometimes the study material (like books, papers, etc.) is included in the tuition fee and sometimes not. These costs can easily go up to 10.000 EUR per year for certain programmes and it is in your own interest to know that in advance.

You can find it out from the website of the programme or by inquiring about it from students or alumni of the MBA programme you are interested in. On average, these costs are around 3.000 EUR per year.

Accommodation and food

These costs are most of the time not included in the tuition fee. You have a choice between on-campus or off-campus accommodation, with on-campus being more convenient, but most of the times also more expensive. Off-campus accommodation can also be harder to find and you have to search for yourself, which can be quite time-consuming. This depends very much on the country and the city where you are doing your MBA and is on average 11.000 EUR per year.

Lost salary

As most of the MBA students are young professionals, you have to consider the lost salary. For a 2-year MBA programme, a student loses a net of 48.000 EUR on average.

So, considering MBA averages, the costs are around 25.000 + 3.000 + 11.000 = 39.000 EUR per year for a student, and 39.000 + 24.000 = 63.000 EUR per year for a young professional.

Luckily, there are ways to cut these costs down or to find financial support. See the article on how to finance an MBA for more details.

A very good way to save costs is to do a distance MBA. This can be partially or completely online. From tuition fee and study-related costs perspective, there is not much difference, but there is a difference when it comes to accommodation, food and opportunity costs. It usually is even more challenging to keep working while studying an MBA, but it is possible and highly appreciated by the employer market, as it denotes excellent multi-tasking capability, great time management skills and exceptional focus and learning aptitude.

How to Change the Name on an Airline Ticket

Changing the name on a ticket is possible under the right circumstances. (Photo: ticket image by CORRADO RIVA from Fotolia.com )

Related Articles

Ask almost anyone in the travel industry about changing a name on an airplane ticket and the response will be: You can’t. Sometimes that is the case. If your name changed, or is misspelled on the ticket, you may be able to get it changed. However, it is extremely unlikely that the airline will allow you to transfer a ticket to someone else. Exceptions are made, though, and rather than accept the no-name-change policy as absolute, there are steps you can take to try and get the name on the ticket corrected.

Step 1

Read the ticket. If your ticket says it’s non-refundable and non-transferable, then you will have a bigger struggle changing your name on it. However, if you purchased it with cash and it is refundable, you will have more options.

Step 2

Visit your airline’s website. They will usually have a list of issues that can be fixed easily, but for an additional fee. Some of these issues include changing the name on the ticket if there has been a misspelling or typo or if you purchased your ticket months in advance and then your name changed (through marriage, divorce or other circumstances).

Call your airline. Explain your situation to your airline. Some airlines are more flexible than others in this regard. If you can’t go on the trip explain why and ask that the ticket be given to the person you’d like to give it to. More often than not, the airline will comply as long as the person has valid identification and you agree to pay any difference in fare and additional fees.

Confer with a travel agent. A travel agent who has an established relationship with the airline will often be successful in getting a name changed on a ticket. A travel agent is usually a trusted third party and can help the airline decide if there is a security risk in allowing the name change.

How to Book an Amazing Cheap Vacation Package

Wise Bread Picks

Sometimes planning a vacation is as fun as taking the vacation. But sometimes you want someone else to do all the work for you and just book a vacation package. Because, let’s face it, sorting through hotels, itineraries, and flights can be a daunting task when you just want to get away. Plus, you can often find better deals when you book a package. (See also: The 5 Best Travel Reward Credit Cards )

Personally, I’ve booked multiple cheap vacation packages over the years. One time, I went to Toronto, Canada for a last-minute long weekend where we stayed in a 3-star hotel and got a nonstop, round-trip plane ticket for $300 less than the cost of any multi-stop ticket without the hotel.

Another time, I traveled to Vienna, Austria for a week by booking a cheap vacation package we stayed in a fancy 4-star hotel (they had a bowl of free mini-Toblerone chocolates in the lobby!) and got flights on a stellar foreign airline for about $500.

Perhaps the best deal of all the vacation packages I’ve purchased was a round-trip ticket to Hurghada, Egypt (a resort town on the red sea) plus a week in a 3-star resort, with two meals a day for $330.

How did I do this? Here are my cardinal rules for how to book a cheap vacation package, followed by an easy three-step process.

Tips for Booking a Cheap Vacation Package

For the greatest savings on your vacation package, use these nine tips to guide you through the booking process.

1. Be Flexible on Place

You’re going to get the cheapest vacation package if you are completely open to any destination. I recommend either choosing an activity that you’re looking for (e.g. beach, skiing, museums) or a general destination (e.g. Europe or South America) and then looking for vacation packages that meet this more general criteria. When you’re more flexible on place, you’re going to get a better deal. (See also: Affordable International Vacation Destinations )

2. Plan Far in Advance or Book Last Minute

The best vacation deals I’ve found have always been last-minute trips. However, my trip to Vienna was planned about nine months in advance. You are best off planning more than three months in advance (four for summer travel) or less than two weeks. Planning a trip in only two weeks may sound scary but you can block off the dates now and choose the destination later!

3. Be Flexible on Time

Just like with flexibility on destination, travelers who are flexible with when they go are going to get better deals. Time includes days that you travel, how long you stay, and even time of day for flights. The more flexibility you have, the cheaper vacation package you’ll snag. (If you’re unsure of how to search based on flexibility, start by checking out my favorite search engines for flexible travel .)

4. Be Flexible on Amenities

Most vacation packages typically include flights and hotel. Some also include a rental car, admission passes to a nearby attraction, or all-inclusive meals. It’s best to be flexible on the amenities you want you can always opt to not use the tickets or to find a rental car on your own.

5. Bring a Friend (or Two)

The majority of vacation packages are priced per person for two people. If you are traveling by yourself, you’ll likely see a surcharge. Some packages charge less per person when there are three or four people all booking together (usually sharing one room).

6. Know That You Can Extend Your Dates

A vacation package frequently has certain dates or number of days set in stone. For example, a long weekend package might begin on a Friday and go until Monday. Don’t feel confined by these dates many of the vacation packages will allow you to extend the dates for several more dollars. And if they won’t let you extend your trip, consider finding your own way home. One time, for example, a vacation package I found was such a good deal that I booked it, but I wasn’t able to extend the trip through the company. So once at my destination I found different lodging for the duration of the trip and bought a one-way ticket home. (See also: Hotels vs. Hostels )

7. Travel From a Major Airport Hub

The best vacation packages are priced from major airport hubs like LA, NYC, DC, and Chicago. Some companies will only let you book from these hubs. Other companies will add a surcharge for smaller airports. If you’re getting a surcharge added for your airport, consider booking this flight separately by checking to see if you could get a better price on your own. Just be forewarned that if something goes wrong with your first flight to the hub, you may be left in a lurch. So plan to arrive extra early or buy travel insurance.

8. Travel From a Foreign Country

The $330 steal to Egypt that I snagged? That was flying round-trip from Moscow. (Hurghada happens to be a hotspot for Russians.) When I traveled in Germany I noticed some amazing prices on vacation packages to foreign countries. So, if you’re lucky enough to have the flexibility to spend more time traveling once you get to your first foreign destination, head to a travel agency and ask where the best vacation packages are to determine your next stop.

9. Splurge: Spend the Money to Upgrade

Usually with vacation packages, you’ll have a cheaper option for the package, then you’ll be given an option to upgrade to a fancier hotel. If you upgrade, you’ll get a much better hotel in a much better location. Every time I’ve upgraded, it’s been more than worth the cost (e.g. the Toblerone hotel in Vienna). And every time I’ve passed I’ve regretted it. (The Egypt hotel had a barely functioning shower. For $50 more we could have stayed at a 5-star resort with swimming pools with swim-up bars. But at the time we had little money and didn’t see the value of the better hotel until we arrived.) (See also: How to Negotiate Your Hotel Deal )

How to Find a Cheap Vacation Package in Three Steps

Now that you know the tips, you’re ready to start actually searching for a vacation package.

1. Make Some Decisions

First, look through the tips above and make some decisions about dates, places, people, budget, etc. As I mentioned, the more flexible you are the cheaper vacation package you’ll get; but note that you’ll also spend more time searching for packages.

2. Determine What’s a Good Deal

Before you know that you’re getting a cheap vacation package, you need to get a baseline price to compare the vacation package to. I recommend choosing you favorite travel search engine (I like Kayak ) and entering a flexible date search for your city to the location you’re considering and first get a baseline sense of what airline tickets cost. Next, use the search engine’s hotel function and see the approximate cost of a hotel for a stay of your length. For instance, if the cheapest fares you are finding are $500, and the hotel for a week’s stay is $600, you’ll know that a vacation package that’s less than $1100 is a good deal.

3. Search and Book

How to you actually search for a deal? Here are the best places to look:

For Last-Minute Trips

For Flexible Locations

  • Go-today has the easiest browsing and good deals for travel abroad. (I’ve used Go-today for several trips that have been outstanding.)
  • Priceline allows you to be flexible on location just look under the theme vacation ideas box. (Here’s a good post with general Priceline Bidding Tips that will help you further understand the Priceline process.)
  • CheapTickets similarly has packages based on theme and destination.
  • For All Packages

    • Pick up the travel section of your local paper as some of the best deals on packages from your local airport will be listed in your local paper with a local travel agent.
  • Try Groupon Getaways. Groupon for travel is new, and I haven’t tried it, but based on what I’ve seen there are some great deals through a partnership with Expedia.
  • Finally, the traditional online travel agencies Orbitz. Expedia. and Travelocity all have good deals, though the sites are easier to navigate if you have a set location and dates.
  • Lastly, don’t forget Wise Bread’s awesome list of Travel Resources .

Have you ever booked a vacation package? What was your experience?

How to Cash in an Annuity Early #cashing #out #an #annuity

How to Cash in an Annuity Early

Annuities are tax-deferred investments offered through insurance companies that have a contract term called a surrender period. You can cash out of an annuity during the surrender period, but may be assessed a penalty in doing so. In addition, if you are not yet 59-1/2 years old, you may be assessed a 10 percent tax penalty for cashing out early, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Pulling the money out is easy; keeping track of contract penalties and tax consequences is where people get confused.

    credit: Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images

    Step

Look at your annuity contract. There should be a page with a summary of the date the annuity was created, the amount it was created with and the length of the surrender period. Along with the surrender period duration, there should also be a schedule of fees called surrender charges that are assessed when the contract is cashed out during the surrender period.

    Step

Read the section that discusses waivers. You may be able to pull out a certain amount of money annually without penalty, or there may a be a surrender charge waiver for long-term care or disability needs, according to Insure.com. Your policy will have the details about waivers, if any, for which you qualify.

    Step

Consult a tax adviser about the tax consequences for pulling the money out of the annuity early.

    Step

Request a cash surrender form from the annuity company.

    Step

Fill the form out completely with your correct address to ensure that the check does not get lost. You may request a complete surrender, partial surrender or start a systematic payment program. You will have the option of having taxes withheld or being subtracted from the payment. You should include with the form any information pertinent to a waiver such as long-term care admittance.

    Step

    Sign the form and submit.

    Becoming an Independent Travel Agent

    By Bonnie Burgess. Tourism Expert

Becoming an independent travel agent can still be a very profitable business to consider. According to a study by ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents), and NACTA ((National Association of Career Travel Agents), 57 percent of independent travel agents saw an increase in sales in 2010, even with the downturned economy.

The study from ASTA and NACTA also concludes that:

Developing a niche specialty of travel, such as cruise sales, can be one of the most important factors in developing a travel business. A successful agent needs to develop knowledge and experience about some aspect of travel. The study also shows that most independent agents do not use a GDS, which is important to have in order to sell airline tickets. An inexperienced agent can sell a cruise with some basic training and cruise vacation experiences. But to sell airline tickets efficiently requires experience and more training.

Needless to say agents with more experience, knowledge, and salesmanship should have an easier time of developing a profitable home based travel business.

Some essential characteristics to look for in a host agency:

    • Does the company offer agent support, including accounting, technical, marketing and commission tracking?
    • Look for high vendor commissions. Host travel agencies earn commissions from vendors based upon the number of annual sales and other negotiated factors.
    • High agent/host agency commission ratio. Host agencies divide commissions with agents, but some also charge monthly fees or other agent charges.
    • Check to see what training programs are offered by the host agency.
    • What GDS booking systems does the host agency use? Is it a system the agent is already familiar with, or is GDS training provided as well?
    • Are marketing opportunities offered?
    • Does the host agency offer internet sales, or a web site ?
    • Check which travel companies the agency is partnered with. Many agencies have preferred vendors that have higher negotiated commissions that also have an above average reputation.
    • Does the agency belong to ASTA, CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association ), IATA (International Air Transport Association), NACTA ?
    • Does the agency give agents referrals to potential clients?
    • Who keeps track of sales and commissions? Does the agency give an agent a sales report?
    • How often does the host agency pay the agents?
    • What type of invoicing and record keeping is the agent required to do?
    • Is the agent required to pay for error and omission insurance or bonding?
    • What office equipment is required by the host agency?

Advantages and benefits as an independent travel agent:

    • Earn travel discounts for hotel stay, car rentals. cruises, and tours.
    • Be your own boss and work at your own schedule. Although this sounds pretty dreamy, many clients think that if an agent works from home, that makes them available any day at any hour. Hours should be set and adhered to as much as possible, unless unrestricted work hours are offered as an extra benefit the agent presents to their clients.
    • Learn more about world geography and cultures.
    • Home based agents are often eligible for some travel expense and home tax deductions .
    • Possibility to make a profitable career doing a job you enjoy.
    • Ability to network with others in the travel workforce.

Since individuals do not require travel agency experience to be an independent travel agent, there are hundreds of companies that offer to be host agencies for beginners. Before signing on with a company who presents an enticing website or tries to sell a package to become a travel agent, ask a lot of questions and see in writing what benefits will be received as an agent, and what expenses the agent will be responsible for. Check with reputable local travel agencies to see what they require to begin as an independent travel agent.

While many primary care providers have shifted to some type of alternative care delivery model (such as direct primary care, cash-only, or concierge medicine), these models continue to evolve and a big question lingers: are these models sustainable?

Another question in the background is: what types of health outcomes do direct primary care (DPC) models provide?

While direct primary care and concierge care have similarities (and some may use these terms interchangeably), they are not exactly the same.

Patients who have the means to pay for either direct primary care or concierge care may achieve higher patient satisfaction and experience scores. They may have easier access to their providers (after all, they are paying for it). And for the primary care providers who shift to a DPC model, many of them experience greater work-life balance and career satisfaction. After all, a typical patient panel under the DPC model may only include several hundred patients.

While the Internet debates the future of the DPC model, it will also be interesting to see how other alternative practice models will blend and leverage telehealth/telemedicine, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and more effective patient engagement strategies designed around wellness and prevention.

What Is the Average Cost of Tuition Per Credit at an Online University?

Per-Credit Tuition for an Online University

The average cost per credit hour at Columbia College Online, Online University of Illinois-Springfield, Online University of Wisconsin and several other online universities is between $275 and $395. However, many factors can impact the cost of a complete online degree program. Factors influencing the average per-credit cost of online university programs include the ones shown below:

    • Residents and non-residents
    • Graduate and undergraduate

Important Facts About Other Fees for an Online University

    general college fee $150/term

    $179/semester + $18.40/credit hour + $25/credit hour for online academic support

Hibbing Community College, for example, charged Minnesota residents $199.93 per credit hour for online courses and $239.33 for non-residents as of 2015-2016. Some schools may charge as much as twice the cost per credit hour for non-residents as for residents. Other institutions, such as the University of Illinois at Springfield, develop a special online-only rate, which results in the same cost per credit hour for residents and non-residents alike.

    Graduate and Undergraduate

The average cost of tuition per credit hour for online graduate courses is typically higher than that of online undergraduate courses. This cost is generally between $100 and $125 more per credit hour. Whatever You Do, Don’t Buy an Airline Ticket On …

    Scott McCartney

    Updated Jan. 27, 2011 12:01 a.m. ET

Shoppers looking for the cheapest airfare can learn something from stand-up comedians: It’s all about timing.

Ticket prices are highest on weekends, on average, according to online travel agencies, fare trackers and airline pricing executives.

When’s the best time to buy? Travel experts have long said Tuesday is when sales are most often in place, which is true. An analysis of domestic fares shows that Wednesday also has good—and occasionally better—ticket prices.

Though prices fluctuate frequently and the ups and downs of airline prices can frustrate and anger consumers, airline pricing actually does follow a cycle during the week. Many sales, in which some seats are discounted by 15% to 25% typically, are launched Monday night. That was true again this week when AirTran Airways launched a sale to all its destinations. Competitors typically match the lower prices Tuesday morning. By Thursday or Friday, many sales have already expired.

Two weeks ago, a Chicago-Atlanta round-trip ticket for April travel dates cost $209 on Tuesday and Wednesday on American and Delta, but then $301 for the next four days. When Tuesday rolled around last week, the fare dropped to $219 at both airlines for the April 8-15 itinerary. By Friday it was up to $307 at both American and Delta. Come Tuesday this week, the fare was down to $229.

Like bread, fares get sort of stale toward the end of the week, said Bob Harrell, a fare consultant who has tracked airline pricing for years.

For this analysis, Mr. Harrell studied all fares filed by airlines over the past 90 days and found Monday was the busiest day for fare changes, followed by Thursday.

When airlines want to push through a fare increase, marking up their basic prices across the board usually by $5 or $10, they often do that on Thursday night, then watch to see if competitors match and if the higher rates stick over the weekend. If competitors balk, prices can be rolled back by Monday morning.

Questions to ask before you jump into a potentially sketchy situation

“BE A PART OF AMERICA’S FASTEST GROWING INDUSTRY — Earn thousands of dollars a month — from your home — selling travel. “

    Don’t miss these Travel stories

With teams using more than 100 unique apparatuses to launch globular projectiles a half-mile or more, the 27th annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin event is our pick as November’s Weird Festival of the Month.

You can find ads like that everywhere from the telephone pole on your corner to your grocery store bulletin board to your daily newspaper.

While you may find these ads appealing, especially if you can’t work outside your home, proceed with caution. Not all work-at-home opportunities deliver on their promises. As a matter of fact, most don’t. And that’s especially true in travel.

In the past, the “standard” get-rich-quick schemes involved stuffing envelopes, assembling crafts, or medical billing. But today, it seems that travel opportunities are fast climbing to the top of the list.

Three years ago, I wrote a column on travel scams and “Becoming A Travel Agent” was in the top five. Unfortunately, things have not changed.

Each month, I get 10 or 12 emails inviting me to participate in some new travel scheme. Very few, if any, are legitimate. Consumers deceived by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, in addition to their time and energy.

Some are “travel clubs” where you pay a membership fee for “discounted” travel, but I would like to focus on the new scourge of the industry — the “Business Opportunity.”

    Motorcycle Helmet Law, ex-Protestor
    2011 Darwin Award Winner
    Confirmed True by Darwin

(July 2011, New York) Protesting motorcycle helmet laws, an Onondaga, NY man was participating in a bare-noggin protest ride when he was killed via flipping over the handlebars. The motorcycle accident injured the noggin of Mr. Contos, 55, fatally damaging a brain that was unable to determine the physics of the situation. Moreover, hed do it again if he could, according to his elder brother. He would have wanted it that way.

Certain laws have physics on their side, obviously, and the laws say one’s body cannot walk away from a high-speed physical impact. Laws not subject to repeal. Unprotected–you squash like a bug. Protected–you eat squash for dinner.

Since properly padded and protected men can walk away from a 90-mph crash, protection is prudent when you increase above a critical threshhold.

Prudent, but sould protection be mandatory? Robert Frost says, “I hold it to be the inalienable right of anybody to go to hell in his own way.”

Police said Phil “hit his brakes, fishtailed and went out of control, flipping him over the handlebars.” What we, the Darwin Awards committee, would like to know–and news reports don’t explain–is just how he went over the handlebars?

How to Transfer an Airline Ticket

It’s possible to transfer your airline ticket, depending on the time and the circumstances. (Photo: K-King Photography Media Co. Ltd/Lifesize/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

When you purchase an airline ticket, always heed the warning: “Read the fine print.” You probably already know that airlines make it difficult to transfer plane tickets, and depending on the airline, you may have very little luck changing or transferring your ticket to a different person; changing the date of the reservation; or changing other details of the reservation. Still, you can try.

    Step 1

Look at your ticket. Look for the words “non-transferable” or “restricted” on your ticket, as these words tell you if you can transfer your ticket to someone else or change your own ticket to a different time. If you paid full price for a first-class or business-class ticket, chances are better that the ticket will not be “non-transferable.”

    Step 2

Visit your airline’s website. Look for the “Reservations” or “Tickets” section to find information about their cancellation and transfer policy. In some cases, you may be able to transfer the ticket to another person or pay a fee to cancel the ticket and have it reissued in someone else’s name. Arm yourself with some knowledge about the airline’s policies to give you ideas on how to approach the next step.

Contact the individual airline that issued the ticket to inquire about transferring your ticket. Some airlines, such as American Airlines, have an online assistant who will allow you to change some tickets on the Internet, while other carriers require you to call the airline’s customer service department. Provide the airline with the information about your situation so they can determine your options. Since airline policies and individual tickets change so often, the only real way to know what will happen with your ticket is to directly contact the airline.

Cancel your reservation, if you were not able to transfer your ticket through your airline’s customer service department. In most cases, you’ll pay a fee of about $100 to $150 to cancel your ticket, and the airline will issue you a credit for the remaining balance on the ticket.

How to Check a Car Seat as Baggage on an Airplane

Check your child’s car seat as baggage before your next flight. (Photo: Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images )

    Items you will need

    • Large, clear plastic bag
    • Bubble wrap (optional)
    • Packing tape Sticker label

    Step 1

Gather all the parts of your child’s car seat. Some car seats install in a vehicle with only the seat belt, while others require a docking base. Make sure you have all of the necessary pieces to safely install the car seat in another vehicle. If desired, bring along any toys that you would like to attach to the car seat for your child to play with.

    Step 2

Place the car seat and any other pieces (such as a docking base) in a large, clear plastic bag, such as a garbage bag or lawn care bag. Tie the bag and seal it using packing tape to protect the contents from becoming dirty during travel. To protect your car seat from becoming damaged, you can also wrap the car seat in bubble wrap.

Write your contact information on a sticker label. Make sure to include your name, address and phone number. Affix the contact information label to the outside of the bag for identification purposes.

Check in at your airline’s desk and let them know that you need to check a car seat. The agent will print an additional baggage tag for your car seat and will affix it to the outside of the bag to ensure it is transported on your plane.

What do I need to set up an online travel agency?

    #online travel agency

    8 Answers

I m inclined to agree with the other 2 answers – don t do it.

    But if you insist:

    1) Your IATA licence is just a starting point. Talk to IATA about how to go about it (their website will give you contacts – last time I looked the UK was run from an office in Madrid!). It is in their interests that you understand what you are getting in to so they will walk you through what you need. You will need to post an insurance bond so you will need a business plan to given them some idea of projected turnover.

1a) Once you have your licence you can start approaching airlines to get authority to issue their tickets. You can t just issue tickets on any airline because you have an IATA licence.

1b) At the same time you might want to negotiate with the airline about what access they will provide you to consolidator fares. In fact you might want to have that in your back pocket before you apply for the IATA licence otherwise your pricing isn t going to be competitive.

1c) Agents don t earn commission any more. You need to add a fee to the fare the airline chanrges to make any money.

    2) Go to the CAA and get an ATOL – another bond and the same business plan.

    3) Find someone to build your website for you. There are a whole range of companies out there who have differing levels of expertise. Some are UK based, some are based in India, at least one is based in Germany. The cost will depend on what you want to do. Many people find the only way to make money these days is by selling ancillaries like hotel and car hire and insurance and suitcases and car parking and.

    4) Make sure your website developer can work with the GDS you choose. All the GDS have APIs but some developers only know one (although they claim to know them all). Negotiating your GDS contract is going to be interesting.

    5) Find an accounting package

    6) Find a mid office/booking management package (one developer might provide them all but you might find different ones best for your environment

    7) Arrange banking particularly wth regard to credit and debit cards. Be sure you understand how much you will pay the card companies and what your exposure to fraud is – travel is an area that fraudsters target.

    8) Get a limited company

    9) Decide on a trading name. Make sure you can secure ALL the URLs you will need – not just yourname.co.uk but yourname.org.uk yourname.com etc etc.

I m going to stop because much of what I m writing now is just about business but I ll go back to the beginning DON T DO IT. There s too much competition and not enough profit.

What Information Is Needed to Book an Airline Flight?

    Travel Itinerary

Choose the airline, date and times you want to travel and return. Do a search of available dates and times on a travel search engine website. A huge listing of available flights during the dates you requested will show up. Choose the best departure and return flight for you. You may be shown cheaper prices if you go one day earlier or later than you intended. If you are flexible, choose the alternative dates to save money. Please note that a few airlines, such as Southwest, do not allow travel search engines to have their ticket information. You must look for a Southwest flight directly on its website.

    Personal Information

In order to book a flight either online or on the phone you must provide basic personal information. This includes your full name as it is written on your government-issued I.D. card. As of 2010, new Transportation Security Administration Secure Flight Information also is needed. This is your date of birth and your gender. If you would like to receive your itinerary information and ticket by email you will need to provide an email address.

    Credit or Debit Card Info

You must provide the credit card or debit card information for the card you want to use to purchase the airline ticket. Information needed will be the card number, expiration date and three-digit code on the back of the card.

    Description

I retired from TWA as Senior VP of Marketing and President of TWA Getaway Vacations after 26 years. One would think I had my fill of the travel business. However, I always had a vision of creating a first class travel company that provided tours and cruises at discounted prices, with full service that clients expect.

In today’s world of marketing travel, many travel agencies have service fees, hidden charges while claiming to have the lowest prices available. I still am amused that so many folks still believe that mega travel agency websites or so-called store travel clubs have the best travel prices. They simply do not.

Treating our clients like Family. Our clients become friends and have told their friends, neighbors, relatives and even ex-spouses about not only our discounted prices but also all first class level of service. Word of mouth advertising cuts down our advertising expenses and we frankly remit those savings back to our clients in the form of discounts.

Becoming an Independent Travel Agent #travel #ticket

Hoi An Town Beach Guide Accommodation, Hotels Resorts #travel #abroad

    #vietnam travel

How Much is an Airline Ticket for Dogs?

    Related Articles

How to Buy an Open Ended Airline Ticket

Not all airlines offer open-ended tickets. (Photo: Creatas/Creatas/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

Unlike a regular return ticket, an open-ended airline ticket sends you to a destination on a specific date, with a flexible return date — usually within one year of your departure date. Although the ticket may be more expensive than a set return or one-way ticket, many airlines offer this flexible option.

    Step 1

Contact an airline that flies to and from a region where you want to travel. Not all airlines offer open-ended tickets, so you should ask to speak to a customer service representative about this option.

    Step 2

Ask the customer service representative about the timetable that you have for returning, if you do chose to purchase an open-ended ticket. The timetable will vary depending on the airline, so never assume you have a certain or unlimited amount of time to use your ticket. You may have to use your ticket anywhere between one month and one year after your purchase it.

    Step 3

Compare the prices on open-ended tickets and other ticketing options. For example, open-ended tickets will likely be one of the most expensive options. It may be less expensive to estimate a return date and purchase a return flight ticket. If you need to change a return flight ticket, it may, in some cases, be less expensive to pay the penalty to change the ticket rather than to purchase an open-ended ticket up front. Also, different airlines will offer different prices on open-ended tickets, so look around before committing to one airline.

Understand all visa and passport rules before leaving the country with an open-ended ticket. While some countries may require that you have a return or open-ended ticket purchased before you enter the country on a visitor’s visa, you may still have to leave the country within three months — such as with Americans visiting European Union countries — regardless of how long your open-ended ticket is valid.

Contact the airline where you purchased the open-ended ticket before going to the airport to use the ticket. The airline representative can let you know whether there are any seats available on the plane for the specific date or time that you want to use the ticket, and can help book you on a flight to your next destination.

How to Return an Airline Ticket

Even non-refundable tickets have some value should your travel plans change. (Photo: Thinkstock/Comstock/Getty Images )

    Items you will need

      Original ticket, itinerary or receipt

    Step 1

Check the fare class on your ticket, which you should be able to find on your itinerary or receipt and generally is indicated by a single letter. If you’re flying economy class, Y and B classes are full-fare economy classes, meaning your ticket is refundable. Other letters indicate discount economy classes, which are non-refundable.

    Step 2

Check your airline’s refund policy on its website or by calling its reservations center if your ticket is refundable. In most cases, if you paid by credit card, you will be able to return your ticket via the website, but you might need to do it over the phone or at the ticket office, depending on the circumstances. You also will be able to exchange your ticket for an equitable flight without a fee in most cases. Monitor your credit card account to be sure the refund is posted within a few weeks.

    Step 3

Read your airline’s policy on ticket exchanges. In most cases, you won’t be able get a direct refund, but you might be able to procure a voucher for use in future flights. Policies vary by airline, but most major airlines let you return your ticket in exchange for another ticket. You almost always will have to pay an exchange fee as well as the difference in ticket cost if your new ticket is more expensive than your first ticket. You will not be refunded if the ticket is less expensive, however. If you don’t have immediate travel plans, most airlines let the fare, minus fees, be applied to travel within a year. Depending on the airline, you might be able to use the voucher only to the same destination as the original ticket. Exchange restrictions are much tighter on international flights than domestic flights.

Check your airline’s website or ask an airline representative about refund/exchange policies related to emergency situations. If you have to change travel plans for reasons such as an illness or family death, the airline might have more lax rules on exchanges, provided you can provide documentation to prove the emergency. Travel insurance, such as that offered by certain credit cards and travel agencies, can ensure you get a full refund should you need to change a ticket for this reason.

Cancel your original ticket as far in advance of your travel date as possible. Many airlines have restrictions as to how soon before a flight, often 24 hours, your are able to return a ticket for refund or voucher. If you simply don’t show up on the day of your flight, your ticket probably will lose all value.

How to Travel to Cuba If You Are an American

By Robert Curley. Caribbean Travel Expert

Islands have always been a part of my life: I was born on Long Island, and moved from there to Rhode Island — my current home, centered on the richness of Narragansett Bay — as a young adult. But I never had a true appreciation of island life until I visited the Caribbean. For me, that s the best part of being a travel writer — learning about local culture and history, meeting the real people that give a place its vitality and character.

Speaking of vital characters, the others in my personal story include my wife, Christine, son, Christopher, and daughter, Shannon. I m proud to say that we re a family of readers, writers, and explorers, and I look forward to sharing some of our past and future journeys with you. Read more

All Americans can now travel legally to Cuba — with some limitations.

You ll need to travel with a Cuba travel organization that has an official license from the U.S. State Department, like Insight Cuba  and Central Holidays .

And, while your tour may include stops at museums, historic sites, or even the Bay of Pigs or a local Communist Party block meeting, purely recreational activities — like visiting the beach or scuba diving — are prohibited from tour itineraries, which are limited to experiences that brings American and Cuban people together.

Schedules are typically packed with activities in order to comply with the State Department’s mandate and federal law, so it remains to be seen whether in practice travelers are able to slip away in their limited free time to visit Cuba s attractions on their own, take a dip in the Caribbean, or sample the local mojitos .

Insight Cuba, for example, is offering several options for Cuba travel, including a long weekend in Havana and seven-night trips that see more of the country. Tour prices include all lodging, activities, in-country transportation and meals, but not the cost of the necessary charter flight from Miami to Havana.

Other Ways to Travel to Cuba

Until and if the remaining aspects of the Cuba travel restrictions are lifted by the U.S. government, tours like these will be the only legal way for most Americans to visit the Caribbean island nation.

Of course, these restrictions don t apply to travelers from elsewhere in the world, and Cuba is among the most popular Caribbean destinations for travelers from Canada and Europe. A number of international hotel companies, such as Riu. Iberostar. and Melia. have built large resorts in Cuban destinations like Varadero that meet the expectations of savvy global travelers. More than 2 million tourists now visit Cuba annually.

Some Americans do travel illegally to Cuba. The Cuban government welcomes Americans to visit with a passport, but while Cuban customs and immigration officials once would agree not to stamp the passports of Americans entering the country, that is no longer the case. The most common way that Americans circumvent the Cuba travel ban is to fly to a third country that has regularly scheduled flights to Cuba, such as Canada. Mexico (Cancun is nearby and a popular Cuba gateway), or the Bahamas (Nassau). You can get a Cuban tourist card at airports in these countries, good for up to 30 days visiting Cuba.

Several companies located in Canada and elsewhere operate specifically to help Americans who want to travel independently to Cuba to book hotels and make other travel arrangements. Examples include USA Cuba Travel and CubaLinda .

    Keep in mind, however:

    • If you are caught traveling illegally to Cuba (such as by a Customs agent spotting a Cuba entry or exit stamp in your passport), you could face hefty fines and an uncomfortable experience clearing U.S. customs.
    • Credit and debit cards issued by U.S. banks will not work in Cuba. That requires U.S. visitors to carry cash or travelers’ checks with them, which can be risky. Once in Cuba, dollars must be exchanged for special convertible Cuban pesos, a parallel currency to normal pesos that will make your visit extra expensive.
    • Cuba is ruled by an authoritarian, sometimes paranoid government. Many of the rights you are used to as a U.S. citizen don’t exist in Cuba.

Note: The U.S. Embassy in Havana reopened in August 2015, as full diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States have been restored. The embassy can help travelers to Cuba with:

    • applications for new U.S. passports or replacing stolen U.S. passports
    • renewing expired U.S. passports
    • registering U.S. citizens living in, traveling to, or born in Cuba
    • assisting U.S. citizens with voter registration and voting
    • providing federal income tax forms
    • providing services to notarize documents to be used in the United States
    • providing limited assistance to U.S. citizen prisoners in Cuba
    • assisting in the shipment of remains of deceased U.S. citizens to the United States
    • assisting with money wires to U.S. citizens in cases of emergency
    • helping coordinate medical evacuations

What do I need to set up an online travel agency?

    #online travel agency
    #

What is an independent travel agent? #smarter #travel

    #independent travel agents
    #

How does a person become a licensed IATA travel agent?

    Full Answer

The first step in becoming a successful independent travel agent is to attend travel school to learn about the travel and tourism industry. Hcareers notes that travel school isn’t mandatory, but it teaches aspiring agents about popular destinations and helps them develop skills in planning and booking travel.

Following classroom training, many independent agents apply to the International Air Transport Association for certification as accredited travel agents, according to Hcareers. New agents should also develop personal travel experience. This experience helps agents decide on which types of travel they’d like to focus their efforts. According to About.com, developing a niche is an important factor in the growth of an independent travel agent’s business.

Partnering with a host agency also helps independent agents build successful businesses, reports the National Association of Career Travel Agents. Host agencies vary in the services they provide and in the fees they charge for those services, but About.com notes that independent agents should base their choices on commission levels, training and such support functions as accounting and marketing assistance. Independent agents may also get access to online reservation systems through their host agencies.

What is an ARC Number? #portland #travel

    #arc travels
    #

    What is an ARC Number?

If you re new to the travel industry, the amount of numbers we have that are in cryptic acronym form is a bit disturbing. CLIA. IATAN, ARC, and more blech! It s complicated but I ll do my best to give you all the details. What is an ARC number, you ask? I ll tell you.

    What is an ARC Number?

In broad terms, think of it as a social security number for a travel agency so they can be identified by vendors. Don t want to be plastering it all over or putting it in your email signature, but at the same time, you give it out to an uncomfortably large amount of people for it being a number with so much power.

ARC (Airlines Reporting Corporation) gives out these the ARC numbers to accredited agencies and it allows those travel agencies to issue airline tickets. The use of an ARC number extends beyond air tickets. Travel agencies will use it to book everything from a hotel to a cruise ship.

When it comes to booking, ARC numbers are the Visa cards of travel numbers. They re accepted by every type of vendors/suppliers that works with travel agents. Little secret, that s not always the case with some of the travel agency ID numbers out there. For instance, CLIA agencies (without ARC accreditation) cannot issue airline tickets. Makes sense since CLIA numbers were designed specifically for cruise-focused travel agencies.

    Who Uses an ARC Number?

Short answer:  It was a necessity for travel agencies at one point in time.  Most air ticketing agencies have an ARC number but  non-airline ticketing agencies may use a variety of other accreditation numbers including CLIA, VTC (through ARC), IATAN non-ticketing entity, or TRUE accreditations.

Long answer: Back in the day, an ARC number was an absolute necessity if you had a travel agency. Not the case today. The number of ARC accredited travel agencies has plummeted. In 1995, ARC had 47,000 accredited travel agency locations with $73 billion in sales. In February 2012, the number of travel agencies holding an ARC number was expected to fall below 14,000 for the first time.  An undeniable drop in accreditations due to fewer agencies and other accreditation options but there is one small factor to mention.  Don t quote me on the exact date of the change, but travel agencies previously had to have an ARC number for every branch and satellite ticketing printer.  Now days, you can have one ARC number regardless of the number of branches or satellite printers.

Many agencies that previously needed the GDS have dropped their accreditation due to expenses and the disappearance of airline commissions. Some agencies completely stop issuing airline tickets and shut up shop or opted for other accreditations.  Some agencies ticket under their host agency s accreditation number.

The Complexities of ARC Accreditation: Not for Everyone

ARC numbers are not needed for every type of travel agency. If you re a home based travel agent or storefront agency that only books leisure travel (no air), having your own ARC number is overkill. For those agencies that have small air ticket sales, having your own ARC number is expensive, time intensive, and can be risky.  There are fees and the ARC report that needs to be filed and reconciled weekly.  You run the risk of fraudulent ticketing activity occurring with your ARC that you are held financially responsible for.

Due to the financial risk involved with booking airline tickets, ARC requires an in-depth screening process (including an on-site visit and a financial survey). You will also need to pass an exam. At of the time of writing, ARC accreditation has a $1600 price tag to start up and a $195 annual renewal fee. Did we mention that there is a minimum $20,000 bond, letter of credit or cash deposit you have to put up?  We re not hating on the fees, airline fraud is rampant and we d take preventative measures too.  What we are saying is you need to be ready to dole out some cash if you want an ARC number.

Positives of Having an ARC Number

Despite everything above, there are many positives to having your own ARC number. I won t go in-depth since my target audience is travel agencies aligned with host agencies and I believe there are very few of my readers that this would be a good idea for.

But, lest someone call me biased, I ll give a positive. For agencies with high segment counts in the GDS (global distribution system), there are financial incentives from both the GDS and the airlines for your sales. There s a reason the remaining ARC accredited agencies sales are growing larger and larger!

    Closing

IATA, CLIA, ARC. and TRUE are all accreditation numbers with subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, differences.  Hopefully my series of posts on what an ARC number is and what a CLIA number is will help you navigate the murky waters of travel ID numbers!

If you still don t feel up to speed, ask your question in the comment box below and we ll get you on the right path.

CheaperTravel.com is an Albuquerque, NM tour and cruise travel agency

    Title

Pavlus Travel – Discounts on: Globus, Trafalgar, Insight, Cosmos, Collette, Club Med, Abercrombie and Kent, Travcoa. Tauck Tours Seller, Discounted Holland America, Princess, NCL, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean

Becoming an Independent Travel Agent #cancun #travel

    Becoming an Independent Travel Agent

    Overview

An independent travel agent has her own at-home business. He works full-time or part-time. The travel agent partners with a host agency and earns commissions for all travel packages and deals sold. But before a person can join a host travel agency he must learn about the tourism and the travel industry. This is accomplished by going to travel school. In addition to learning about exotic destinations and different cultures, a student also learns how to make travel arrangements for tourist groups, families and businesspeople. After receiving proper training, he joins a host agency and becomes an independent travel agent.

    Step 1

Go to travel agent school. There are numerous colleges and universities that offer degrees in tourism or certificates in becoming a travel agent. Programs range from classroom work, to correspondence study to online courses. The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) has a list of member travel schools. The ASTA is a trade association that offers invaluable information about travel and tourism for those employed in the industry. Being trained as a travel agent is not mandatory, but it is very useful in becoming a travel agent. In travel school you learn reservation, sell travel packages, and market your business as an independent travel agent. The minimum level of education you need is high school diploma or its equivalent.

    Step 2

Get certified. You submit an application to get accreditation as a travel agent via the International Air Transport Association (IATA), one of the leading organizations offering membership and accreditation to U.S. travel professionals. Getting an official IATA Certificate of Accreditation will not only help you gain valuable knowledge about the industry, but it will also give you solid credibility.

    Step 3

Go on some travel excursions. Once of the best ways to become a great travel agent is to travel. Having the experience of airplane travel, getting to the hotel and visiting the most famous places are a great way to learn about the customer side of the travel business.

    Step 4

Acquire basic computer skills. Computers are an important part of being a travel agent. Reservations are made on computers, contact is frequently done by email, and research about destination is done online. Knowing basic computer skills including word processing and spreadheets are useful skills to have.

    Step 5

Learn a second language. As more people travel to foreign locations or immigrate to new countries, the number of languages spoken in any city increases. By being bilingual or even trilingual, you can not only increase your customer base, but offer more international travel locations.

    Step 6

Join a host agency. The best route to becoming an independent travel agent is to join a host travel agency. These are many host agencies you can join, but it is usually best to join one that is accredited by the International Airlines Travel Agent Network (IATAN).and/or the Airlines Reporting Commission (ARC). Each host agency operates a little differently, but most require you to pay a fee that can range from a few hundred to a few thousands dollars. You will also need to set up your website. Once you have completing the application process you can start working as an independent travel agent. Some host agencies also offer training programs to help new members get started. You make money from commission earned from people booking hotels, airline reservations and vacation packages on your website.

    Step 7

Market yourself as a travel agent. Once the website is set up, you need to find customers and get traffic to your site. Guerilla Marketing is an advanced form of marketing techniques. There are many books on the subject with numerous ideas on how to market your travel business. There are print and online classified advertising, article marketing, flyers and word of mouth. As you build traffic to your site you will grow your business as an independent travel agent.
