5 Books to Help You Become an iOS App Developer

How to build an app for ios

With each new iOS version, there are significant amount of changes that are being brought to the table, but not only for the typical consumer, also for developers who re the ones building applications, and in fact the future of Apple as we know it.

Guess what, as an iOS developer in New York (or anywhere in the US), you can expect to earn a salary ranging from 100,000$ all the way up to 150,000$ when you become proficient and more experienced. Now, that s definitely something I d think twice about, considering that a book from which you can learn iOS app development is going to costly somewhere in the 30$ range.

How to build an app for ios

In this post you re going to learn about five of the most recognized and admired books that are currently available to the public, for learning iOS application development. I ve made sure that all of them are beginner friendly, and will advance you to intermediate / advanced level with a couple of weeks. They re also all fully updated for the new iOS 7.

iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide

How to build an app for ios

Updated and expanded to cover iOS 7 and Xcode 5, iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide leads you through the essential concepts, tools, and techniques for developing iOS applications.

It s a top-quality book, with each of the chapters containing meaningful and useful information, nothing feels out of the ordinary and you re hardly looking up on the web, for solutions to problems you couldn t find solutions for inside of the book itself. Now, its important to note that there are only two chapters on Objective-C in this book, and so you might find it a little bit difficult at first, but nothing that practice wont be able to even out.

iOS 7 Programming Cookbook

How to build an app for ios

iOS 7 changed the way customers use their phones. Everything is now animated; things are subtly moving around, sometimes without the user noticing these shifts and turns and twists.

What s important to note here that this is a cookbook, which in other words means that it will be looking mostly at new functionality that has been implemented in iOS 7, and so previous knowledge of Objective-C might be necessary in order to fully understand it. It should be however purchased for future reference, as the author of this book is a great developer himself.

iOS 7 Application Development in 24 Hours

How to build an app for ios

In just 24 sessions of one hour each, learn how to build powerful applications for today’s hottest handheld devices: the iPhone and iPad! Each lesson builds on what you’ve already learned, giving you a rock-solid foundation for real-world success!

It s not a bad book at all, the fact of the matter is its built to help you do everything step-by-step, nothing you couldn t do yourself with other books. Its 900 pages, and inside of it there is everything you could possibly learn about iOS and its development. On-going book series that are worth having in the shelf.

Programming iOS 7

How to build an app for ios

If you’re grounded in the basics of Objective-C and Xcode, this practical guide takes you through the components you need for building your own iOS apps. With examples from real apps and programming situations, you’ll learn how to create views, manipulate view controllers, and use iOS frameworks for adding features such as audio and video.

This is a book to pick-up once you re at intermediate level, as it will take you to advanced within a few chapters. It has been recognized as one of the best and simplest books on iOS 7 (or any other version) development there is. Has quite an edge, but some say its starting to lose it.

iOS App Development For Dummies

How to build an app for ios

iOS 7 represents the most significant update to Apple’s mobile operating system since the first iPhone was released, and even the most seasoned app developers are looking for information on how to take advantage of the latest iOS 7 features in their app designs.

If none of the above books felt good enough, or practical enough this one definitely will. Its aimed at those who re complete strangers to iOS, and want to pick up the pace and their own rate. Its full of documentation and other practical things, will take at most 6 weeks to build a proper app from the ground-up.

Its a great thing to learn programming. Its also one of the most awarded job industries in the world, and the pay itself is a huge attraction for those who re still considering to begin their journey. I hope these books were of help to get you in the right direction.

Exiting an iOS App with Xamarin #ios #app #development #windows

Exiting an iOS App with Xamarin

The team is in the middle of building an iOS app for iPad using Xamarin which will be enterprise deployed. A requirement came up to automatically shut down the after a certain action was performed by the user. Usually it s recommended to not kill your app on iOS and apps may fail certification if you do this. Make sure to read the iOS documentation .

Now because we are doing an Enterprise Deploy and not an App Store Deploy. we have a few options and won t fail any certification for using these techniques, but if you are going through the App Store certification process use at your own risk.

Crashing Your App

Our first attempt was to crash the app after showing a UIAlert notifying the user that the app will be shutting down. Wasn t too thrilled about this procedure but to accomplish this, basically you just throw an exception.

Does what it needs to, but crashing your app to exit it is not the best way to make it happen.

Calling exit() Function

Next option is to P/Invoke the exit() function. To accomplish this using C# do the following

Then just call the function

Calling this may cause your app to fail App Store Certification and not the best user experience. It also will cause applicationWillTerminate and some UIApplicationDelegate methods to not be called. Here is an excerpt from iOS documentation

Using terminateWithSuccess

Third option is to call terminateWithSuccess which is a private method of (UIApplication *)sharedApplication .

Using Xamarin.iOS you basically have to use a Selector to call the private method as follows

Calling private methods is not allowed according to Apple certification guidelines and you will most likely get you rejected from the app store.

Using NSThread.exit

Last option is to call NSThread.exit from your main thread.

According to the documentation, you should avoid calling this because it doesn t give you a chance to clean up or possibly save state.

So What to Use.

So typically in an iOS app you don t usually exit your app (same goes for Windows Phone and Android it s a free for all) but there are sometimes situations where this is required. If you are creating an enterprise deploy app, you should be fine. If you are creating an app that will be put through the certification process, you may not pass with some of the options used. We have never had to use this feature in an App Store app but my order in which I would try would be

  1. P/Invoke exit()
  2. NSThread.exit()
  3. throwing an exception
  4. terminateWithSuccess

Thanks go out to the Xamarin support team (specifically Brendan Zagaeski) for pointing the team in the right direction.

  • Should you get a second bachelor – s degree or go

Should you get a second bachelor’s degree or go for a master’s degree?

The question plagues more students than you might think.

Whether you want to change fields, be a more well-rounded job candidate or just learn something new, deciding between a second bachelor s degree and a master s degree is not always easy. While there doesn t seem to be one overarching correct answer binding everyone who considers the question, that doesn t mean an answer doesn t exist at all.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding between a second bachelor s degree or a master s degree .

    Second bachelor s degree

If you can t get into your desired master s degree without a bachelor s degree in the subject, then you may want to do what Michael Au plans to do: Get a second bachelor s degree.

Au, who earned a bachelor s degree in biology from Southwestern University, plans on going to the University of Texas at Austin for his second degree a bachelor s in nursing .

I think that a master s in biology was not quite the direction I wanted to go in, Au said. I love biology but I don t think I would be happy with a master s in this field. I found myself more drawn to healthcare.

Be careful, though: Not every school allows someone to get a second bachelor s degree. Stanford University, for example, doesn t allow two degrees in the same area. Meaning, you can t get two Bachelor of Arts degree or two Bachelor of Science degrees, but can do one of each, with permission.

On the other hand, some schools have a fast track for students pursuing a second bachelor s, such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill s nursing program (nursing.unc.edu), which offers an accelerated four-term Bachelor of Science in Nursing option, granted you have the prerequisites completed.

Also, don t expect the same kind of financial aid options as you d have with a master s degree. According to a U.S. News World Report article, there are fewer financial aid options for those pursuing a second bachelor s.

Scholarship or private loan eligibility are not affected significantly, nor is eligibility for PLUS loans and work-study, according to the article, but federal loans may be at stake.

Federal Stafford student loans are available for second bachelor s degrees, but the lifetime limit is based on your total time as an undergraduate, reads the article, which also states the limit is $57,500 for undergraduates. A master s degree student would start over with federal Stafford student loan lifetime limits.

And according to Fastweb.com, students with a prior bachelor s degree are ineligible for the Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant).

So you may be spending more money than you would have if you just got your first degree in your now-desired subject. But with two degrees, you may be more diverse, as Au realized.

I think that a liberal arts education is so valuable but also a very practical degree is valuable, Au said. Now I m getting both!

    Master s degree

If you want to change career paths or study something new, then a master s degree may make sense.

For Polly Thurston, who earned a bachelor s degree in art from Austin College, she decided her senior year of undergrad that she wanted to work in graphic design. Her school didn t have the degree so she had a decision to make: second bachelor s or master s. She chose a master s, eventually graduating with a master s in communication design from Pratt Institute.

I wanted to be challenged…and I hoped that the advanced degree would open more doors for me in the career world, said Thurston, who assumed a second bachelor s degree would be difficult for her with some of the basic courses and younger students. I think the master s degree gave me more confidence in my search and a more advanced set of tools.

In many cases, you have to have an undergraduate degree in the subject to be accepted into a master s or Ph.D. program. That s not always the case though, as Thurston found out. Also, you can sometimes take a few classes as a non-degree student to fulfill that requirement.

There are less scholarship opportunities for grad students (Scholarships.com has a separate page for grad students), though you may qualify for private students loans. And according to the U.S. Department of Education s Federal Student Aid page, grad students are eligible for:

    • The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program
    • Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program
    • Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
    • Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program
    • Federal Pell Grant

There s no objectively right or wrong answer to the question of second bachelor s vs. master s. Just make sure you decide what s right for you.

  • Twitter on the App Store #twitter, #twitter, #inc., #news, #social #networking,

    Unable to Log On

    by Jedi Knight Calv

I reloaded this app on my newer iPhone after it developed some sort of crashing issue (something I assumed was isolated to the app on my phone). However when I go to log on, it doesn’t accept my information because the app still believes my user name to be something that it no longer is. No matter how many times I reloaded the app and reset my password (and entered in the correct, reset password) I was not able to gain access to my own account!

The clear solution to this is to allow users an option to enter their user name, even when redownloading this application from the iCloud.

Please take heed of this review and update the app. I love it, but if I can’t use it with this incarnation of the software, this version of the app is not any good.

The only thing I do not like about pof site is that it dictates what user age group you are allowed to contact or browse. I am 43 male and I can not browse profiles of girls younger than 29 years old! Why? On the other hand they would match me with ladies up to 60+. I do not know if this rule only apply to the free membership or not. Over all pof is much better than many dating sites I have used. I hope they would allow people the freedom of choosing what they want while continuing to give members the choice of using filters. Thank you.

The official app is the best app

For years I used Tweetbot but as my primary Twitter client but always had the official Twitter app in the background for certain and uses. I decided to try the Twitter app full-time this week and man am I impressed. Using the official Twitter app breathes new life into Twitter, makes me much more excited and invested in using the platform. This app has polish that Tweetbot doesn’t have. It also supports features such as poll and moments that other apps don’t. After a week of using the official Twitter client, I am now regretting I hadn’t switched much earlier.

    What Is An iPhone UDID? #app #store,app #store #apps,apps,development,ios,itunes,iphone #news

The term UDID is occasionally thrown around when discussing privacy or development topics concerning the iPhone. I m sure that we all don t know what UDID stands for, so I thought I would explain the purpose of a UDID.

A UDID, or Unique Device Identifier, is simply a specific serial number for your iDevice. There are multiple advantages to having this device-specific serial, but it mainly serves as a way to document the existence of your device and to track it.

Think of your iPhone s UDID as its social security number. It is a 40-number, alphanumeric string that is not replicated on any other iDevice

Your UDID is also important because it is the way that most ad companies profile cellphone users for marketing purposes. Lately, there have been a lots of issues raised about iOS apps sending UDID numbers to ad companies without the user s permission.

If you are familiar with the world of app development, you are already very familiar with the UDID. Apple allows developers a way to beta test iOS apps with up to 100 iDevices. You have to supply the developer with your UDID in order to install these beta, ad-hoc applications.

To find your iPhone s UDID, plug your iPhone into iTunes. Click on your iPhone in the list of devices and look at its summary. You will see Name, Capacity, Software Version, Serial Number and Phone Number. Click on the Serial Number and it will change to show you your UDID.

Even if you re not in the world of app development, it s always good to be informed. If you re interested, you can read an article by the Wall Street Journal on how app makers are using your device s UDID.

Did you know your iPhone had a UDID?

they is a way to change it via UDID Faker. This was made for stuff like this. For each one of my apps, I have changed my UDID to be of a different serial. For every app I download, I randomize the UDID again. It s needed in the steps to help protect ourselves, as this could be the reason why apple took out the way to spot jailbreakers in 4.2.1. It could be because they plan to use this to find out if you were jailbroken or not

The government will soon be marking babies with Udid lol.

Gartner Says Demand for Enterprise Mobile Apps Will Outstrip Available Development

SYDNEY, Australia, June 16, 2015 View All Press Releases

Gartner Says Demand for Enterprise Mobile Apps Will Outstrip Available Development Capacity Five to One

Latest Enterprise Application Trends Will Be Addressed at Gartner’s Application Architecture, Development and Infrastructure Summit in Sydney, 20-21 July 2015

By the end of 2017, market demand for mobile app development services will grow at least five times faster than internal IT organizations’ capacity to deliver them, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner forecasts mobile phone sales will reach 2.1 billion units by 2019, which will fuel demand for apps in the enterprise that meet the high performance and usability of consumer apps.

Speaking ahead of the Gartner Application Architecture, Development Integration Summit in Sydney on 20-21 July, Gartner principal research analyst Adrian Leow said enterprises find it a challenge to rapidly develop, deploy and maintain mobile apps to meet increasing demand, as it is exceedingly difficult and costly to hire developers with good mobile skills.

“Organizations increasingly find it difficult to be proactive against competitive pressures, which is resulting in their mobile apps becoming tactical, rather than strategic,” said Mr. Leow. “We’re seeing demand for mobile apps outstrip available development capacity, making quick creation of apps even more challenging. Mobile strategists must use tools and techniques that match the increase in mobile app needs within their organizations.”

According to Gartner, employees in today’s digital workplace use an average of three different devices in their daily routine, which will increase to five or six devices as technologies such as wearable devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) eventually become mainstream. Many of these employees are given the autonomy to choose the devices, apps and even the processes with which to complete a task. This is placing an increasing amount of pressure on IT to develop a larger variety of mobile apps in shorter time frames.

Despite this, a Gartner survey on mobile app development conducted in 2014 found that the majority of organizations have developed and released fewer than 10 apps, with a significant number of respondents not having released any mobile apps at all.

“This is an indication of the nascent state of mobility in most organizations, with many organizations questioning how to start app development in terms of tools, vendors, architectures or platforms, let alone being able to scale up to releasing 100 apps or more,” said Mr. Leow.

According to Gartner, there are four best practices that organizations can consider to successfully overcome app development challenges:

Mobile development teams are overstretched and have difficulty effectively delivering the growing number of mobile apps in their queues. The result is apps being built on a first-come, first-served basis, with the line of business making the most noise having its needs met first. This lack of value-driven prioritization leads to inefficient use of IT resources and a degradation in the quality of apps delivered. According to Gartner analysts, mobile development teams need to formulate a process of mobile app prioritization that involves understanding the needs of business stakeholders. This will be a key factor in defining common criteria for evaluating mobile app projects.

    2) Adopt a bimodal IT approach

Integration is often the largest part of the effort of delivering an enterprise mobile app, with many app development teams underestimating the time and resources required for integration during the planning stage of the traditional waterfall methodology they are following. Gartner believes organizations need to replace this traditional IT development approach with a bimodal strategic approach that supports innovation and agility to deliver apps more efficiently and quickly. Bimodal approaches consist of two models: Mode 1 drives the creation of stable infrastructure and APIs to allow apps to retrieve and deliver data to back-end systems without impacting those enterprise applications, while Mode 2 uses high-productivity, agile approaches to quickly deliver front-end app features required by the business.

    3) Use rapid mobile app development (RMAD) tools

Using development tools that can produce apps more rapidly is crucial for enterprises to help bridge the gap between mobile app demand and supply. Significant innovation is driving this market and replacing traditional coding approaches, such as native development tools, with more effective RMAD tools. There are many approaches to RMAD, including drag-and-drop codeless tools, code generation and orchestration, model-driven development, virtualization, forms construction, and others. These approaches are allowing those with no programming skills or coding ability, such as people in business roles, to rapidly assemble mobile app prototypes and continuously iterate on these designs.

    4) Adopt a mixed-sourcing approach

Organizations want to have full control over their mobile app development initiatives, however, maintaining a pure in-house development environment is difficult to achieve given mobile is a relatively new competency to many developers. It entails many complexities and specific activities, such as UX design and psychology or cellular coverage testing, which may be more efficiently handled by an outsourced third party experienced in mobile app development. Gartner believes organizations will improve their in-house mobile development skills over time, but currently only 26 percent of organizations are adopting an in-house-only development approach, while 55 percent are successfully delivering apps using mixed sourcing.

The latest enterprise application trends, technologies and strategies will be discussed at the Gartner Application Architecture, Development and Integration Summit 2015 in Sydney on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 July. Follow #GartnerAADI on Twitter for updates.

Best apps for guitar tabs and chords #app #store #apps, best #apps, music, news

You may recall that I fancy myself a bit of a musician. I’ve been forcing my friends to listen to a variety of my musical endeavors for nearly two decades now. I’m sure they are bored with my stage antics by now. One piece of equipment that is almost as important to a musician as the instrument itself is a songbook.

There are a variety of ways to keep track of songs you’ve written or want to cover, and chords you need to practice, or want to perfect. The dawn of the mobile device has made it even easier than ever to carry your songbook with you through apps specifically designed for musicians. We’ve compiled a list of what we think are the best guitar tabs and chords apps for iPhone and iPad.

Whether you have just started to learn how to play, or are a seasoned vet at guitar, this app has a database of nearly a million songs for you to browse through. View tabs for songs with lyrics included and access detailed information about how to play a specific chord. Use the auto-scroll feature to follow along with the song, hands free so you can keep your fingers on the fret board for those shredding solos. This app is available for iPhone and iPad for free .

The best way to figure out how to play a pop song is to find the tab for it online. It used to be that you either had to listen to it over and over again on your cassette player, trying to get that one weird chord down. Now, learning a new song is easy if you know how to read tabs. This app aggregates a number of different online guitar tab sites so you can find what you are looking for fast and easy. You can save your favorite songs for offline viewing and the auto-scroll feature will run through the song automatically so you don’t have to. This app is available for free for both iPhone and iPad.

Any musician will tell you that their art is an ever-growing experience. It takes a long time just to learn the basic chords in the genre you are interested in. There are thousands of versions of the same set of notes and it is nearly impossible to remember them all. With this app, you can browse and learn those chords. Use the Reverse ChordFinder to figure out the name of the chord you are playing and strum the virtual fretboard to hear what the different notes sound like. Designed for iPhone and iPad, this app is available for free .

This app is actually a perfect program for practicing along to a song. The slowdown feature is priceless for learning complex solos. However, it also includes a chord analyzing feature that shows you how to play every single chord in a song and also offers alternate versions if you wish to change a song’s octave. So, not only can you learn how to play a song by listening to it in real time, or slowed down without changing the pitch, but you can also get the chord progression as a visual chart to help you learn faster. This app is designed for iPad and iPhone. It is available for $4.99 .

This app really is the ultimate in guitar tab access. It features tab for nearly a million songs, plus chords, notes, and scores for more than 400,000 of them. Chord diagrams include note placement so you know where your fingers belong on the fretboard. There are also 150,000 interactive tabs that include sound playback so you can practice along to a track that includes drum, guitar, and bass. If you are just starting out, you can get some basic tools from the included guitar lessons. Songs can be saved for offline access and the auto-scroll feature lets you play, hands free. This app is available for $2.99 for iPhone. There is also a free iPad version which contains in-app purchases.

Having access to hundreds of thousands of existing songs is all well and good, but what if you want to write songs? There are not very many apps on the market that offer drag-and-drop song writing notation. This app does exactly that. Select a chord and drop it into your songs. Make adjustments based on the key you want to play in and how you tune your guitar. The app also includes scale notations and you can learn how to play chords by searching for them and viewing the fingering chart. Chord! works for iPhone and iPad. It is available for $4.99 .

If you are a multiple instrument musician, or want to share cover songs with band mates, this app offers tab for a variety of instruments and even narrows it down to type of instrument. Send the drum notation to your rhythm section and the scales to the bassist while honing your craft while playing along to electric or acoustic guitar. It also comes with a slowdown program, a chromatic tuner, and a count off to prepare for the start of the song. The features are subscription-based, but you can give them a 15-second test run after you download the app for free. Songsterr is a universal app for iPhone and iPad.

Another way to write music is using a variety of symbols and notes on a sheet music notebook. Instead of simply putting a chord name above the lyrics, you can get into the nitty gritty of a song. This app offers full song writing features so you can make specific notes on all parts of a song. You can import GPX and PTB files and it is compatible with mySongBook. After you load files, you can integrate them in the fully searchable music library. The multi-track playback feature lets you mute instruments for solo listening. This app is available for $7.99. It works with iPhone and iPad.

This app probably has the largest collection of interactive guitar tabs in the App Store. That’s not just because the name says it either. You can choose from more than 200,000 songs and counting for interactive tablature that includes playback with guitar, bass, and drums. The service is always updating to include new and popular music. You can also slowdown songs for precision playback, loop sections to replay a portion over and over, and access songs offline. This app is available for $3.99 for iPhone. There is also an iPad version which is free with in-app purchases.

If you need access to your music while on stage, you are going to need an app that can be as flexible as your fingers. With this app you can create and organize a set list with songs that you import from Dropbox, or write songs right inside the app with the song editor. All you have to do is write the lyrics and then add the chord tab to the changes. Share your songs and set lists with band mates from app to app so they will all be looking at the same screen as you. This app is available for $12.99. It is a universal app.

PRTG for iOS—Access Your PRTG Installation On the Go! # #prtg,

    PRTG for iOS

This video is gonna carry some new features for the PRTG for iOS application from Paessler.

The first thing you’ll see when you open up the application is the last view that you had when you have that application open. You can click on a group and then click on a group that is underneath that group in your PRTG installation. You can keep going until you find the host or the device that you want to look at in your PRTG installation and go to a specific sensor. The sensor overview tab will give you an idea of which sensors are green or other status.

Once you click on a device you’ll be able to see all the sensors for the device. There you’ll be able to see the status as well of all the sensors whether they’re in error status or okay status or warning status.

This gives you a good overview of how the health is of the actual device in PRTG. When you’re at the sensor overview page you can see the various statistics for the sensor as well as the graphs at the bottom. You can click on the graph on the bottom to actually make this also full screen.

Some other features on the sensor page are the ability to favor a sensor or to change the priority of it. If your favorite a sensor in this dialog box then when you click on the installation on the selling side you’ll be able to see that right away.

Some other new features of the app are that you can acknowledge alarms with the acknowledge in text as well as pause sensors that maybe in a false state or being worked on. Something else that can be done through the PRTG for iOS app is looking at the maps that you have in your PRTG installation. You can view at the entire map with your iOS device directly with PRTG for iOS app. Here you can see a map of our monitoring environment here at Paessler.

With the PRTG for iOS app you can also view reports that you have run before.

Here we can look at the top most least use bandwidth sensors click on the report and you get directly in the iOS app. If you have a newer iOS device then the new notification feature is quite handy as well. USCG Mobile App #mobile #app #developers #los #angeles

Your safe boating needs in one free easy app!

Available for download May 16, 2015

The USCG Boating Safety App features include:

    • Find the latest safety regulations
    • Request a vessel safety check
    • Check your safety equipment
    • File a float plan
    • Navigation Rules
    • Find the nearest NOAA buoy
    • Report a hazard
    • Report pollution
    • Report suspicious activity
    • Request emergency assistance

    About the App

As the nation’s recreational boating safety coordinator, the Coast Guard works to minimize loss of life, personal injury, property damage, and environmental harm. Our boating safety program involves public education programs, regulation of boat design and construction, approval of boating safety equipment, and vessel safety checks for compliance with federal and state safety requirements. The Coast Guard Mobile App supports these missions by providing the essential services and information most commonly requested by boaters.

Features of the app include: state boating information; a safety equipment checklist; free boating safety check requests; navigation rules; float plans; and calling features to report pollution or suspicious activity. When location services are enabled, users can receive the latest weather reports from the closest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather buoys as well as report the location of a hazard on the water.

The app also features an Emergency Assistance button which, with locations services enabled, will call the closest Coast Guard command center.

The Boating Safety Mobile app was not designed to replace a boater’s marine VHF radio, which the Coast Guard strongly recommends all boaters have aboard their vessels. The app was mainly designed to provide additional boating safety resources for mobile device users.

The app is self-contained, so personal information is stored on the phone and is not sent to the Coast Guard unless the user chooses to send it. The Coast Guard does not track a user’s location, and the app does not track a user’s location unless the app is being used.

Links from these pages to non-Coast Guard sites are provided as a customer service and do not represent any implicit or explicit endorsement by the United States Coast Guard of any commercial or private issue or products presented here.

    10 Best New Agriculture Apps For 2015 #best #mobile #app #development

10 Best New Agriculture Apps For 2015

Has the app market reached a saturation point? Consider Google Play and the iTunes App Store combined have more than 2.5 million apps, according to recent statistics. And with hundreds of new apps added every day, one could argue enough is enough.

But I won t. I say, bring it on. A competitive apps market is driving up quality. In fact, TechCrunch.com reported last year that Google removed 60,000 apps from their store that were not up to the mark when it comes to quality and usability. So with app developers forced to step up their games, it can only be good for customers.

The same holds true for ag professionals, who have a bounty of quality apps at their disposal for their Androids, iPads, iPhones and more. To help you sort through the best new agriculture apps available, I ve once again researched the latest ones to hit the market. For the purpose of this list, I selected apps that were introduced — or significantly updated — in 2014 or due to launch in early 2015. View the slideshow above to see which apps made the cut.

    Also Worth A Download

Sirrus (update). Sirrus is the precision agriculture app from SST Software that allows you to digitize field boundaries, soil sample, scout your crops, check weather conditions and graph rainfall estimates per field. Features include: drive field boundaries using GPS or draw them using high-resolution background imagery; digitize center-pivots with ease; soil sample using a grid, zones, or previous soil sampling points; view weather forecasts, current conditions and historical rainfall graphs; record scouting data such as pest pressure, stand counts, and much more; generate and share PDF scouting reports; share data with other agX Platform users via Data Bullet; and store and share data securely on the agX Platform. Sirrus requires an agX Account, which can be created for free in the app. (iPad )

Great Lakes Early Detection Network (update). Now you can submit invasive species observations directly with your smartphone from the field by using the Great Lakes Early Detection Network (GLEDN) app. These reports are uploaded to EDDMapS and e-mailed directly to local and state verifiers for review. Developed by the University of Georgia’s Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, GLEDN has several new features in Version 2.0, including new navigation, ability to draw shapes on maps for infested area and reporting of negative data to track eradications. (Android. iPad. iPhone )

Agrivi. Based on best-practice production processes for more than 60 crops, Agrivi app guides farmers to improve their production and increase productivity. Its features include project-oriented farm management with a simple and fast way of planning, monitoring and tracking all farm activities and inputs usage, advance sales and expense tracking ensures taking control over farm finances, inventory management with low inventory alarms removes delays in production caused by lack of inputs and weather monitoring with detailed 7-day weather forecast and 3-year weather history for each field and smart disease risk detection alarms. (Android. iPad. iPhone )

TractorPal. This app keeps inventory and maintenance records for all your personal agriculture machines and attachments, including cars and trucks of all brands. TractorPal enables you to log all of your large and small machinery and automobiles including tractors, pickups, lawn mowers, cars, combines, sprayers, loaders, skid-loaders, backhoes, attachments, and more. You can also record each item’s maintenance (e.g. changing oil, filters, tires, and irregular repairs), and will remind you when service is required. (Android. iPad. iPhone )

Tire Advisor. Now you can access all of Bridgestone’s commercial tire products in one easily searchable app. Included are truck and bus tires (e.g. Bridgestone, Firestone, Dayton), Bandag retreads and off road mining and construction tires (e.g. Bridgestone and Firestone). Each product selection provides useful information including, features/benefits, product images, technical specifications, and warranties. There are three easy ways to search for products: a step-by-step guided search, a filtered search and a keyword search that allows you jump quickly to a product you already know by pattern name. (iPad )

MachineryGuide. You can use your tablet or smartphone as a precision tractor GPS system using the MachineryGuide app. It s one of the first guidance software programs that functions as a precision farming application using an antenna. These antennas are capable of receiving and processing free corrections (e.g. EGNOS, WAAS). It can be used for any farming activity which is done by tractor or other agricultural machinery, including fertilization, manure application and spraying. It even can be used for land measurements as well. (Android )

Flight Tonight App Finds Same-Day Flights For Incredibly Cheap

Suzy Strutner Associate Lifestyle Editor, The Huffington Post

Move over, Hotel Tonight — there’s a new sheriff in town.

As Hotel Tonight revolutionized last-minute hotel bookings, Flight Tonight will do the same for last-minute air travel. Enter your desired departure airport on the app, and Flight Tonight will show you a whole treasure trove of cheap trips you could take. tonight .

The app, a brainchild of the flight analysts at Hopper. acts fast when flight fares plummet. It lists cheap, same-day getaways for spontaneous travelers who don’t want to waste precious moments sifting through all those fare comparison sites.

On Flight Tonight’s simple interface, you’ll be presented with round trips — two days, three days, four days and more — to both domestic and international destinations. Users can purchase tickets straight from their phones, with no booking fees. Show up at the airport a few hours later, and you’re off on an epically impromptu journey. You’ll have to book a hotel once you arrive, but hey, there’s an app for that too .

A Flight Tonight search for New York City, for example, turned up a whole slew of cheap flights for the evening of July 30: A three-day round-trip to Portland, Maine for $283, departing in less than three hours. A weeklong trip to Boston, from $300. Montego Bay for a quick two days and meager $428.

If this is the future of travel. we see things getting a lot more spontaneous — and a lot more affordable — in the tech-filled ages to come.
