CANTY specializes in many applications for the Pulp and Paper industry. Some of these applications include lime kiln control and high temperature cameras.

Cameras are used in a number of applications to optimize the production process within the Mining industry. Applications range from, tailings measurement, at-line / in-line slurry particle analysis systems, turbidity, industrial / lab solid particle sizing systems and vision based froth monitoring systems.

Molten level, slag monitoring, rebar length and cobble detection among others are processes controlled in the metal industry by cameras. Particle size of powder metals by the SolidSizer replaces the need for sieving.

    J.M. Canty, Inc.

Canty is an outgrowth of the consulting practice of John M. Canty, P.E. in designing a very deep high pressure Diving Research Facility, capable of simulating ocean depths of over a mile, he found that no lighting components were available which would withstand the required pressure of 2500 PSI. It was, therefore, necessary to develop a light that would permit illuminating the chamber at these unusual conditions. Since this vessel (now installed in the high pressure laboratory of the University at Buffalo-Department of Physiology) was to be used for manned experiments, it was desirable to keep the electrical components outside. This is due to the potential fire hazard of electrical sparks in a confined environment.

Fiber Optic Installation – Inspection and Copper Cable Testing Tools #it

    #

    Punch Down and Termination Tools

The best installations start with the best tools. And you can get the best tools from one trusted provider – Fluke Networks. Our network installation line encompasses all the essential tools needed for a job done right! From our innovative JackRapid™ punchdown tool to our forged steel constructed D-Snips cable scissors, look to Fluke Networks.

    Case Studies

ITM, a UK-based leading independent provider of specialist ICT infrastructure solutions and services, applies best of breed technology, in-house expertise and innovation to deliver standards compliant solutions and services to clients throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the World. Stuart Ayres, ITM Fibre & Equipment Engineer, reviewed the results of their investment in twenty Versiv Cabling Certification Systems.

After using the Versiv System for a few months it clearly offers several advantages when compared to the previous generation of test equipment. Not only is the Versiv System faster, the modular design and online connectivity dramatically reduces our engineers travel time as they no longer need to call into the office to have test results downloaded or firmware updated.

During the few months that we have been using the new equipment I have identified the following advantages that translate into productivity gains for both ITM and our Customers:

    • Greatly reduced test cycle times for both copper and fibre.
    • Easy and fast movement of test data from site to office enables better project progress reporting, quicker sign-off and invoicing.
    • Ability to remotely configure and control the test units.
    • Simplified logistics, we now only have to maintain one fleet of modular multi-purpose test equipment.

The Ultimate Test in the Alaskan Bush Survival Tip: Take care where the bears roam

Integrity Networks provides communications services and cable and fiber network infrastructure installation for companies and federal, state and local governments nationwide and around the Pacific Rim. Based in Renton, Washington, their projects range from military bases in Guam and Singapore, data center and VOIP installations in Washington and Virginia, to major healthcare and corporate oil, gas and mining projects across Alaska.

Integrity Networks entered the Alaskan market in 2007, and it has remained a steady presence in low-voltage contracting there ever since. With branch headquarters in Anchorage, Integrity Networks has an extensive staff of highly skilled Alaskan employees that work on jobs in the last great American frontier.

    EXTREME DANGER: High Voltage Environment

With Fluke Networks OptiFiber® Pro OTDR with SmartLoop™, Twistnet technicians safely completed bidirectional certification of new North Sea Wind Farm installation

Established in 2000, with more than 30 years of experience, Twistnet Communications Ltd. specializes in the installation, testing and certification of fiber optic cabling, structured cabling systems and voice cabling systems.

Twistnet Communications Ltd serves companies in the United Kingdom and Europe with core services and it offers experts in fusion splicing, direct fiber termination, OTDR and power-meter testing and certification and repair with state of the art equipment such as the Fluke Networks’ OptiFiber Pro OTDR with SmartLoop, part of the Versiv™ line, the industry’s leading Cabling Certification System

By leveraging Versiv DSX-5000, CertiFiber and LinkWare Live, PowerCom has significantly reduced the time and effort needed to test the systems and provide results to their customers.

Challenge: PowerCOM installs and services a wide range of information and communication systems including; voice, data, Wi-Fi, security and monitoring at a variety of both indoor and outdoor locations. With over 80% of employees working in the field on multiple client sites, delivery of test results to the PowerCOM office and/or client is often challenging. Historically, the process to set up test equipment and compile results has been manual and time intensive for both field and administrative staff. Additionally, some customers desired more frequent and periodic delivery of detailed test results, rather than only upon project completion. To address these issues, PowerCOM required a solution that could help their technicians and administrative staff be more efficient, as well as readily and more easily share data with their customers.

Results: By leveraging Versiv™ DSX-5000, CertiFiber® Pro and LinkWare™ Live, PowerCom has significantly reduced the time and effort needed to test the systems and provide results to their customers. Instead of requiring the field technicians to set-up test parameters and commute to the office to deliver/review the test reports, these tasks can be done remotely through the cloud. By leveraging LinkWare Live, PowerCom technicians can complete jobs faster, ensure test accuracy and reduce the potential for rework.

Fluke Networks is pleased to announce that ECR Informatique, a leading company in the cable installation market, acquired the new Versiv platform, now with a fleet of 7 cable certifiers with DSX-5000 replacing DTX-1800 in order to consolidate its position and deployment in structured cabling solutions systems at both DataCenters and horizontal cabling levels.

Created in 2001 and located in Calvados (France), ECR specializes in cable installation of all types of local area networks (copper, fiber, wireless, laser) in standard or special environments or subject to manufacturers certifications. ECR acts on behalf of businesses, local communities, public and private institutions (education, health. ) on their main site or remote facilities, and is also a subcontractor for major clients taking charge of large scale projects featuring local networks

    STEELCENTRAL APPRESPONSE

We went from being virtually blind to having a hawk’s-eye view of the network; able to see the whole picture yet capable of zeroing in immediately on details for trouble-shooting, capacity analysis, and planning. – Jean-Francois Bustarret, senior network architect, e-TF1

    What is SteelCentral AppResponse?

Riverbed AppResponse joins together advanced application and transaction insight, comprehensive end-user experience monitoring, and deep network intelligence into a single appliance to provide total visibility into your application performance problems. It helps you discover where and when bottlenecks are occurring so that you can troubleshoot problems faster, and it streamlines workflows and reporting to enable cross-team collaboration to put an end to finger pointing.

Using high-speed packet acquisition and multi-stage analytic processing, AppResponse delivers rich network and application insights for traditional and web applications, VoIP and video quality monitoring, database performance analysis, and Citrix-delivered apps.

Features and benefits of SteelCentral AppResponse

“The users are happier now, so the IT staff doesn’t have to crawl under the floorboards when they go for coffee.” – Peter Toft, IT Department Manager, Icopal

Even split seconds of slow page times can have a huge impact on the revenue for an enterprise. When you have thousands of users per hour accessing your applications through web pages, you need to quickly answer:

    • What pages were slow?
    • When they were slow?
    • For whom they were slow?

AppResponse pinpoints mission-critical web application problems quickly, letting you resolve them before end users even notice.

Identify the root-cause of application performance problems faster with SteelCentral AppResponse

With SteelCentral AppResponse you will quickly see if a performance problem is rooted in the network orservers. View response time for all users and transactions by application, user business group, and location. Understand end-user experience for both SteelHead-optimized and non-optimized web and SaaS applications.

“As the global network manager, I didn’t want to spend my time analyzing network traffic; [SteelCentral AppResponse] does the work for us and puts our team at ease so we can focus on planning strategic IT projects that impact our business.” – Global Network Manager. Coty, Inc.

“I was skeptical at first, but I have to say that the [SteelCentral AppResponse] box definitely ‘does what it says on the tin’. Its ability to quickly drill down to the cause of performance issues, its amazing ease of use, and the clarity of its presentation of so many useful metrics, have made it our primary tool for application performance management.” – UK Network Manager, IT Centre UK. ALSTOM

The [SteelCentral AppResponse] solution has given us a scientific approach to managing the site, making the hard data we need easily available for analysis and thus enabling us to forecast, act, and react much more appropriately. And now, when my boss comes down and asks me ‘what’s up with the network’, I can give him a complete answer—in terms of the impact
on our business—in ten minutes or less.”
    Senior Network Engineer. Hotwire.com

[SteelCentral AppResponse] saves us more time than any other management tool we use. It’s like having another person on staff.” – Senior Network and Systems Analyst, Colgate University

AppResponse ROI Calculator shows you how you can reduce costs of delivering applications to users.

SteelCentral AppResponse integrates application and network performance management to deliver:

    • Deep packet inspection and application recognition
    • End-user experience monitoring for web applications at the user transaction level
    • End-user experience monitoring of SteelHead optimized SaaS and on-premise web applications

    • Rich network intelligence

    Supported Network Packet Brokers:

AppResponse monitors end-user experience for SteelHead-optimized enterprise web and SaaS applications and helps you understand the benefit of SteelHead WAN optimization in terms of the effect on end user experience.

Compatible Riverbed solutions to solve application performance issues

    • When SteelCentral AppResponse reports which server is causing the delay, deploy SteelCentral AppInternals to conduct a full code-levelapplication diagnosis.
    • If the network seems to be the issue, SteelCentral NetSensor displays performance data all along the layer 2/3-network path.
    • Seamlessly drill into SteelCentral Transaction Analyzer for in-depth analysis of individual multi-tier transactions.
    • AppResponse leverages Riverbed SteelHead appliances in the branch, data center and cloud to provide visibility into end-user experience for optimized enterprise web and SaaS applications.

    Citrix Monitoring for SteelCentral AppResponse

Citrix offers significant benefits to IT organizations. But, due to its unique architecture, the lack of a complete view of user transactions can sometimes complicate the performance-troubleshooting process. The CX-Tracer module uses industry-leading analytics in SteelCentral AppResponse to pinpoint the root cause of performance problems for Citrix-hosted applications.

CX-Tracer automatically correlates front-end user sessions to their back-end counterparts, enabling end-to-end analysis of individual Citrix user sessions. Additionally, CX-Tracer complements and extends your existing Citrix monitoring solutions such as Citrix EdgeSight.

Database Performance Monitoring for SteelCentral AppResponse

With the Database Performance module you can identify the impact of a database on end-to-end application performance. By monitoring database performance at the transaction level, the module can identify the particular SQL statement or database call responsible for application delay and equip your database team with actionable information.

Because it uses passive monitoring for zero overhead on database operations, no database logging is required. You get a unified view of the end-user experience and database performance, to complement and extend your investment in database-health monitoring tools.

Unified Communications Monitoring for SteelCentral AppResponse

With the Unified Communications module you can monitor and report on live VoIP and video calls. Manage voice, video, and data on the same network, and proactively resolve communication issues by using real-time and historical data on both application performance and call quality.

With passive speech-quality analysis, you can monitor call quality and resolve issues before they affect end-users. Prioritize problem resolution and set meaningful SLAs based on the effect of call quality on various areas of your business, and then easily troubleshoot with real-time, web-based dashboards for speedy resolution.

    Shark module for SteelCentral AppResponse

Add Shark module to your SteelCentral™ AppResponse license to create a single appliance that provides rich network intelligence, end user experience monitoring and transaction analysis. Accelerate problem resolution with streamlined workflows and deeper network insight, letting you get to the right level of information needed to solve problems quickly and easily.

Basic and Optional Life Insurance Overview #life #insurance #applications

    #

Basic and Optional Life Insurance Overview

Life insurance, insured by The Hartford Life and Accident Company helps provide for your family’s economic well-being in the event of your death. This benefit is paid to your designated beneficiaries.

BASIC LIFE INSURANCE (Employees, Retired State Employees and RMTs)

The Commonwealth offers $5,000 of Basic Life Insurance to all active state employees and most retirees who have health coverage through the GIC.

GIC Retired Municipal Teachers (RMTs) are eligible for basic life insurance only in an amount determined by the city or town from which they retire. Survivors, Elderly Governmental Retirees (EGRs), COBRA enrollees, and retirees in the GIC municipal health-only program are not eligible for GIC basic or optional life insurance.

This one-time benefit allows you to elect an advance payment of 25% to 80% of your life insurance death benefit if you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Insureds are eligible for this benefit if the attending physician provides satisfactory evidence that you have a life expectancy of 12 months or less. Upon payment of the accelerated death benefit, future life insurance premiums will be waived, regardless of your age. The remaining balance is paid to your beneficiary when you die.

OPTIONAL LIFE INSURANCE (Active Employees and Retired State Employees Only)

Optional Life Insurance is available to provide economic support for your family. This term insurance allows you to increase your coverage up to eight times your annual salary, up to a maximum of $1.5 million. Term insurance pays your designated beneficiary in the event of your death. It is not an investment policy; it has no cash value. This is an enrollee-pay-all benefit.

    How Much Do You Need?

To estimate how much Optional Life Insurance you might need, or whether this coverage is right for you, consider such financial factors as:

    • Your family’s yearly expenses;
    • Future expenses, such as college tuition or other expenses unique to your family;
    • Your family’s income from savings, other insurance, other sources; and
    • The life insurance cost and your family’s outstanding debt. For instance, employees with young families and mortgages might need the coverage. But older employees who have paid off their mortgage and have no dependent expenses might not need it, especially because premiums increase significantly as you age.

Life Insurance and AD D Questions?

Contact the GIC: 1.617.727.2310 ext. 1

The Hartford’s My Tomorrow Website is an online tool to help you better understand your optional life insurance benefit. It is designed to help you:

    • Make smart, affordable benefit choices to help protect your income.
    • Get quick access to key benefit details, real-life stories and more.

Life and AD D Insurance Booklets

For additional information and details about GIC life and AD D benefits, see your life booklet.

All new enrollees receive a life insurance booklet by mail: If you cannot view the booklets below and need another copy, contact the GIC.

10 Great Cloud Apps and Services for Small Business – Salesforce

    #

There’s so much business tech out there it can be hard to know where to find the good stuff.

Cloud computing has been responsible for a new breed of agile business tools that let you replace on-premise hardware with an internet connection and a few monthly subscriptions. These cloud-based apps are revolutionising the way SMEs do business.

There are Software as a Service (SaaS) tools for everything from small business accounting and HR to email marketing and document storage. And they bring loads of extra benefits. including better collaboration, automatic updates and pay-as-you-go pricing models. Integrate them with your CRM system for extra power where you need it.

So where do you begin? If you don’t know your SaaS from your elbow, here are a few cloud computing apps we recommend you get started.

10 Great Cloud Apps For SMEs

MozyPro is an online service that lets you schedule daily, weekly or monthly backups to the cloud. As an SME, you get the confidence you’ll be able to recover from a data loss disaster, without the need to invest in your own backup infrastructure and skills.

    2.Salesforce Pardot Marketing Automation

Want to save your sales and marketing teams time? Salesforce Pardot offers SMEs the chance to automate lead tracking, nurturing and scoring – while helping both business functions unite to drive revenue and efficiency.

Box.com is like your old My Documents desktop folder except it lives online and you can access it from all your gadgets and devices. Drag and drop the files you want to access on the move so you never have to worry about forgetting your USB stick or finding that email attachment. It’s great for collaboration too, and everyone in your team can share and update documents in Salesforce.

SMEs need an HR solution that’s a great fit for their business today – but has the power to support growth at the drop of a hat. Fairsail provides a comprehensive system for global mid-size businesses, boosting HR productivity, increasing workforce visibility and delivering great experiences. Fairsail is to HR what Salesforce is to CRM – their words, not ours!

Quickbooks has an online accounting service that can help with all your accounting needs, including monitoring cash flow, creating VAT returns, setting budgets and creating business reports. Though it started as a desktop program, it now offers its SME-focused accounting functionality from anywhere in the world.

    6.Salesforce1 Mobile App

Take your CRM on the road with the Salesforce1 Mobile App. Use it to plan your day in the field and keep track of all sales opportunities from your mobile device. Install mobile-ready apps from the Salesforce AppExchange – or even customize your own. View service case detail and report dashboards. Share and edit files for easy collaboration with your team – do everything you need to do to close a deal, but on mobile.

Evernote is the place to store and make sense of all the notes that would otherwise clutter your desk on post-its or on the back of envelopes. It can even scan images for words, so you can upload a picture of a whiteboard full of handwritten notes and find it later using text search.

Customer service is a key battleground for the modern SME – and one where they frequently win victory over the bigger players. GetFeedback is built to help you crate online surveys that display how you want them too, whatever device customers take them on.

As your sales teams grow, so does the challenge of effectively managing territories and routing. Geopointe makes it easy, putting your data on the map, and smarter planning and processes on the table.

Struggling to find the app your SME desperately needs? Consider building your own. These days, the tools to do so are readily available – our App Cloud offers a one-stop shop for building, running, managing, and optimizing the apps your SME’s been trying to survive without.

    One app doesn’t fit all

If you’re an SME, we think it’s worth checking out all of the apps above. But this list is far from exhaustive. Every business is different, and there are plenty of other great cloud applications out there to match your organisation’s needs.

Take a look at the Salesforce AppExchange for more great SaaS apps designed for small and medium sized businesses. Or if you’re keen to find out how your small business can have an even bigger impact in your industry, download this e-book packed full of tips.

What – s a Cloud App, and Why Would I Want

    #

    Association of Software Professionals

What s a Cloud App, and Why Would I Want it?

When you re buying food, there is no definition for the word natural. Anyone selling processed food can use the word natural to mean anything they like. Or nothing. Similarly, cloud app is a term whose meaning is still vague and in many ways not a reliable description of what kind of app, product, or service you are buying.

Let s back up a step. What s an App? It s another word for a program. It usually refers to a program that runs on a phone or tablet but it basically means the same thing as software or program. The program can run locally, either as a program installed on a computer or device, or it can run in a browser using a scripting language like JavaScript, or it can run on a remote Web server and work with a much simpler program or script to display results in your browser.

When a program has been built to run on a web server, it s usually called SaaS, or software as a service. The advantages of SaaS are that these programs do not need to be installed on a local computer, and are mostly platform-independent; so they will run in the browser of a Windows computer, or Mac, or mobile any device with a browser, basically. Data can be stored either locally or remotely. When data is stored remotely, it is easy to lock it away from former employees, and local requirements for backup and big servers are greatly reduced.

For the publisher, the advantage is that the product can be sold as a subscription service, and effectively eliminates piracy.

In scientific computing, cloud computing refers to using programs on a scalable computing platform, so that many computers can be used simultaneously for pieces of the same task. This has been used for signal analysis, and for calculating how proteins structures will fold in three dimensions, which is very useful for creating new drugs that will match up with a known three-dimensional protein associated with an illness or condition. So cloud programs, in science, can use dozens or thousands of computers simultaneously, all to work on one problem.

The way that the term cloud app is being used now for commercial software is less precise. A true cloud app is a software-as-a-service product that runs on multiple computers for redundancy but usually not for computing power. It might be scalable, if needed for that application.

Consumer alert: much of what is being sold as a cloud product is software-as-a-service with online storage, or in some cases it is software, installed on the local computer in the traditional way, connected to a server that regulates a subscription for the product. There is no cloud benefit to the user of such products except the ability for business managers to remotely disable software subscriptions and access for former employees.

When you are buying a program that will run on the Internet, even a small program that will be used by one person can be cloud enabled, with redundancy, running on multiple servers. All the developer has to do to make that happen is to buy cloud hosting from an online Web server company that provides that service. There are various levels of hosting cloud servers, and the servers are redundant either geographically to provide faster service to users in different locations or simply to provide more reliability. In case of failure of one server, such a program will continue to run on another server. So redundant servers is one part of cloud computing; it increases the reliability of the online service. Generally, those servers will not be at the same location.

When does all this matter? If you are signing up for a service, like Google Docs, which is a cloud service for writing documents, saving them, and sharing them with other people, then cloud applies to a distributed service running on multiple servers to protect you from server failures in real time. It doesn t actually change how things work in the program, but increases the reliability of the online system.

If, however, you have a business application that you are paying a developer to convert to become a cloud app in some form, then you should ask about where the program will be hosted. It can be hosted on two computers, or can be hosted on something like Amazon Elastic Cloud, which can create a large-scale network for a scalable program with high levels of redundancy. Using two servers may be appropriate for a program that has to run for a dozen users, but the large-scale system is more appropriate for something like an airline reservation system, which has to manage massive numbers of simultaneous transactions with real-time tolerance for hardware and communications faults.

So at the low-end, a cloud app is a software product running as a service, online, on at least two servers, planned for redundancy, scalability, and access control, usually for multiple users.
