What are Self-Paced Online Degree Programs? #self #paced #mba, #what #are

#

What Are Self-Paced Online Degree Programs?

Self-paced online degree programs allow students to set their own academic schedules, while traditional online programs typically follow an academic schedule set by the school. That’s why a self-paced program might appeal to working professionals and others who need flexibility when taking classes. Read on to learn about these programs.

Self-Paced Online Degree Programs Overview

Self-paced online degree programs are designed for students who may find full-time, on-campus programs hard to fit into their busy schedules. You can find online undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a large number of disciplines. Lately, online degree programs have started being offered from a variety of educational institutions, such as two-year technical and community colleges, as well as four-year universities. A few of the basic attributes of self-paced online degree programs include the ability to study at one’s own pace and the online delivery method.

Important Facts About Self-Paced Programs

Undergraduate and graduate certificates, bachelor’s and master’s degrees

Engineering, computer science, business administration, human resources management, global studies and others

Some programs require brief in-person residencies

Self-Paced Progress

Unlike traditional university programs, self-paced online programs give students the flexibility to make their own schedules with regard to lessons and class assignments. Working professionals can benefit from self-paced programs because the pursuit of an education follows their own time schedule. Students can study in the evenings, on weekends or whenever their schedule permits. Most programs allow students to work on one or more courses simultaneously. While some programs have certain completion time limits, such as 6- or 12-week terms for instance, others may be more flexible.

Online Coursework and Interaction

One of the benefits of a degree program offered online is the ability to complete coursework via the Internet. A personal computer and Internet connection is all that’s required to easily access class materials. This includes study guides, exams and supplemental materials. Students can also use their computers to interact with fellow students and faculty via email or online forums. Such Internet communication makes it possible for students to ask questions and engage in a dialogue, just as they would in traditional, on-campus courses. Contemporary online teaching methods include video tutorials, live chats, online quizzes and online classroom discussions.

Other Benefits

Some self-paced online degree programs allow you to pay as you go and only pay for the courses you’re currently taking. Since you’re typically charged by the course at the time of enrollment, you have greater flexibility in arranging your education in accordance with financial demands. Also, because online degree programs are often extensions of on-campus programs, the same professors who teach on-campus courses often teach the online sessions. And, these courses often include the same texts and learning materials.

At the Alliance Française de Londres

  • You follow a fully structured syllabus from beginner to fluent
  • You are assigned to a class that is the right level for you (we have a more refined level structure than anyone else – because it matters)
  • You are taught by a qualified teacher who is a native French speaker
  • Classes are supported by a web based platform that allows you to download additional material, upload homework and stay in touch with your tutor
  • And when you are ready (and if you want to) you can gain an internationally recognised qualification by taking an exam (see here )

Some recent comments from our students:

I have been in. ‘s class on a Tuesday evening for two terms, and he is a superb teacher. He is encouraging, motivating and thorough. We get through a lot of grammar and vocabulary, but always in a lively manner. His imaginative discussion sessions on news and issues of the day engage the entire class. He is the best French teacher I have ever had.

I would like to thank Alliance Française. for a great learning experience. This has to be the most informative and interactive class I have ever attended. And I must admit it challenged me and pushed me to learn and improve. Thank you once again.

I just want to say that it has been terrific. and the camaraderie of our class has been an unanticipated pleasure. Formidable!

I did six weeks at Alliance House and I want to thank you all for a very useful and enjoyable experience. Our tutor was a first class teacher: energetic and encouraging – using interesting material (I learned a lot about French thinking and culture as well as the language); and in an agreeably small class.

has been the best language teacher I’ve had in years. She was really giving 100% and I was very impressed from the very first class – with her engagement and that she never wasted our time.

I experienced an unforgettable journey at the Alliance Française de Londres, a cherished period of my life.

The teacher, the class format and the learning experience itself were all fantastic and I would definitely recommend the course to others wishing to learn French.

When I started the class, I was extremely nervous having not learnt a language for over ten years. Her friendly, supportive and engaging style meant that I quickly overcame my nerves, saw my competency rapidly improve and even had some fun along the way!

I have now signed up for 1C, something I did not expect when I started in September and have also recommended the Alliance Française to a friend.

I can’t say enough positive comments about his teaching. He is endlessly patient, inventive and intuitive – a really gifted teacher. I have learned so much in a very short time. I definitely want to continue learning French with Alliance Francaise. Thank you

And from a former President of the Alliance Française:

« Le nom lui-même d’Alliance, inventé par les géniaux initiateurs, nous enseigne le respect de l’Autre, de sa personnalité, de sa culture. On n’est jamais un étranger dans une Alliance Française et par voie de conséquence la culture française n’est jamais une culture étrangère imposée par un Etat hégémonique. Elle nous appartient […] et est le moyen privilégié de mieux connaître notre propre culture. »

Sir Edward Tomkins – President of the Alliance française in the UK, 1976-1998.

How to Get to Alliance House

Are airlines padding flight times to improve on-time performance?

Airline schedule

Erik S. Lesser / EPA

Canceled flights are seen on a video display at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport during a severe winter storm in February 2014. A new study suggests that airlines have been padding the allotted time for flights. Airlines say they set aside as much time as needed to deal with weather problems and tarmac congestion.

Hugo Martin Contact Reporter

About a decade ago, Joe Nolan, a semi-retired electrical engineer from Palm Desert, could expect to hop on a flight at Palm Springs International Airport and arrive in San Francisco 55 minutes later.

Now the flight is usually scheduled for about 90 minutes. Nolan suspects that airlines are allotting more time for each flight to make it easier to meet their arrival schedule.

It tells me that the on-time statistics are worthless, he said.

Nolan might have a point. A study by a British company that collects and analyzes travel data concluded that airlines around the globe have been padding their flight schedules for nearly 20 years.

In the U.S. on-time performance rates for commercial airlines have been on the rise and airline executives have boasted about the percentage of flights that arrive within 15 minutes of their scheduled time.

The study by OAG Aviation Worldwide looked at several routes around the world to conclude that the block times set aside for many flights have been growing since 1996.

For example, OAG looked at more than 1,400 flights scheduled between Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport in 1996 and found that no flights took longer than 90 minutes, according to the study. By 2015, nearly half of the flights scheduled between the two airports allotted between 91 minutes and 110 minutes, the study said.

On average, the allotted time for flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco increased 8% from 1996 to 2015, the study found.

Are Americans Safe in London?

By Laura Porter. London Travel Expert

Laura Porter has lived in the London area all her life and can’t imagine ever wanting to live elsewhere. London is her ‘specialist subject’ and she has written the About.com London Travel site since it started in 2006.

This site was included in the “Top 50 Travel Websites ” in The Independent where Laura was described as a “mastermind” as “she has a knack for seeking out the unusual as well as providing plenty of practical tips”.

The About.com London Travel site will help you plan a trip or enjoy armchair travel. It includes luxury and budget, the top attractions and the little known quirks that made the city so special.

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, 9/11, and the 2005 London bombings, as well as more recent terrorist attempts on the capital – all of this could make you think twice about visiting London which would be a shame as the fear of danger far outweighs any real danger in our city.

I have had emails from Americans concerned about coming to London as they do not know what kind of welcome they will receive.

It seems such a shame that everyday folk who simply want to embrace the world around them by getting out and exploring new places should have these concerns but the UK and US national press do little to alleviate these fears.

It is true that there is a large anti-war movement in the UK (Stop the War Coalition ) and we have regular rallies and demonstrations to protest against UK troops being in Iraq but this does not mean US citizens are not welcome in our city.

London is one of the largest cities in the world and the most populated city in the European Union .

London is an incredible multi-cultural society and we all live together quite happily most of the time. There are 7 million people, speaking 300 languages, following fourteen faiths in London and if we can get along I’m sure we can welcome overseas visitors.

London tourism has suffered since world terrorism has caused a decline in US visitors. Hotels and major attractions have all lost out without our US visitors who are a major financial proportion of our tourism sector. There are many schemes to entice you back so do check with your travel agent for any special package deals for trips to London.

CBS News did a poll in 2006 to ask five years on after 9/11, how safe do you feel now? The results showed 54% of Americans say they generally feel safe, but 46% say they feel somewhat uneasy or in danger. This showed opinions were still divided but I’m pleased to see optimism was starting to win out.

In July 2007, we did a Safety in London Poll and the results showed most people wouldn’t change their travel plans following recent terrorist threats. Travelers are a resilient bunch. (You can count yourself in this group as even if you haven’t been to London yet, as you are here reading this site so you are thinking about it.)

To conclude, I live in London. I have lived in London most of my life. I love London. I travel into central London every week. I visit major tourist attractions. All this makes me happy. I hope it can make you happy too.

Check the Personal Safety section of this web site which has tips added regularly.

You can check the web site for the US Embassy in London for their latest Terrorism news (within Current Issues ) if there has been recent action to concern you.

What are Mutual Funds #define #mutual #fund, #types #of #mutual #funds,

What is a Mutual Fund. Types of Mutual Funds in India – Latest NAV and Market Risks

What are Mutual Funds? Define Mutual Fund / Definition of Mutual Funds ( MF ) in India

Mutual funds are in the form of Trust (usually called Asset Management Company) that manages the pool of money collected from various investors for investment in various classes of assets to achieve certain financial goals. We can say that Mutual Fund is trusts which pool the savings of large number of investors and then reinvests those funds for earning profits and then distribute the dividend among the investors. In return for such services, Asset Management Companies charge small fees. Every Mutual Fund / launches different schemes, each with a specific objective. Investors who share the same objectives invests in that particular Scheme. Each Mutual Fund Scheme is managed by a Fund Manager with the help of his team of professionals (One Fund Manage may be managing more than one scheme also).

Where does Mutual Funds usually invest their funds :

The Mutual Funds usually invest their funds in equities, bonds, debentures, call money etc. depending on the objectives and terms of scheme floated by MF. Now a days there are MF which even invest in gold or other asset classes.

What is NAV. Define NAV :

NAV means Net Asset Value. The investments made by a Mutual Fund are marked to market on daily basis. In other words, we can say that current market value of such investments is calculated on daily basis. NAV is arrived at after deducting all liabilities (except unit capital) of the fund from the realisable value of all assets and dividing by number of units outstanding. Therefore, NAV on a particular day reflects the realisable value that the investor will get for each unit if the scheme is liquidated on that date. This NAV keeps on changing with the changes in the market rates of equity and bond markets. Therefore, the investments in Mutual Funds is not risk free, but a good managed Fund can give you regular and higher returns than when you can get from fixed deposits of a bank etc.

WHAT ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF MUTUAL FUNDS :

A common man is so much confused about the various kinds of Mutual Funds that he is afraid of investing in these funds as he can not differentiate between various types of Mutual Funds with fancy names. Mutual Funds can be classified into various categories under the following heads:-

(A) ACCORDING TO TYPE OF INVESTMENTS :-While launching a new scheme, every Mutual Fund is supposed to declare in the prospectus the kind of instruments in which it will make investments of the funds collected under that scheme. Thus, the various kinds of Mutual Fund schemes as categorized according to the type of investments are as follows :-

(a) EQUITY FUNDS / SCHEMES

(b) DEBT FUNDS / SCHEMES (also called Income Funds)

(c ) DIVERSIFIED FUNDS / SCHEMES (Also called Balanced Funds)

(d) GILT FUNDS / SCHEMES

(e) MONEY MARKET FUNDS / SCHEMES

(f) SECTOR SPECIFIC FUNDS

B) ACCORDING TO THE TIME OF CLOSURE OF THE SCHEME :While launching new schemes, Mutual Funds also declare whether this will be an open ended scheme (i.e. there is no specific date when the scheme will be closed) or there is a closing date when finally the scheme will be wind up. Thus, according to the time of closure schemes are classified as follows :-

(a) OPEN ENDED SCHEMES

(b) CLOSE ENDED SCHEMES

Open ended funds are allowed to issue and redeem units any time during the life of the scheme, but close ended funds can not issue new units except in case of bonus or rights issue. Therefore, unit capital of open ended funds can fluctuate on daily basis (as new investors may purchase fresh units), but that is not the case for close ended schemes. In other words we can say that new investors can join the scheme by directly applying to the mutual fund at applicable net asset value related prices in case of open ended schemes but not in case of close ended schemes. In case of close ended schemes, new investors can buy the units only from secondary markets.

C) ACCORDING TO TAX INCENTIVE SCHEMES :Mutual Funds are also allowed to float some tax saving schemes. Therefore, sometimes the schemes are classified according to this also:-

(a) TAX SAVING FUNDS

(b) NOT TAX SAVING FUNDS / OTHER FUNDS

(D) ACCORDING TO THE TIME OF PAYOUT :Sometimes Mutual Fund schemes are classified according to the periodicity of the pay outs (i.e. dividend etc.). The categories are as follows :-

(a) Dividend Paying Schemes

(b) Reinvestment Schemes

The mutual fund schemes come with various combinations of the above categories. Therefore, we can have an Equity Fund which is open ended and is dividend paying plan. Before you invest, you must find out what kind of the scheme you are being asked to invest. You should choose a scheme as per your risk capacity and the regularity at which you wish to have the dividends from such schemes

How Does a Mutual Fund Scheme Different from a Portfolio Management Scheme ?

In case of Mutual Fund schemes, the funds of large number of investors is pooled to form a common investible corpus and the gains / losses are same for all the investors during that given peirod of time. On the other hand, in case of Portfolio Management Scheme, the funds of a particular investor remain identifiable and gains and losses for that portfolio are attributable to him only. Each investor’s funds are invested in a separate portfolio and there is no pooling of funds.

Are MFs suitable for Small Investors or Big investors. Why Should I Invest in a Mutual Fund when I can Invest Directly in the Same Instruments

We have already mentioned that like all other investments in equities and debts, the investments in Mutual funds also carry risk. However, investments through Mutual Funds is considered better due to the following reasons :-

(a) Your investments will be managed by professional finance managers who are in a better position to assess the risk profile of the investments;

  • (b) In case you are a small investor, then your investment cannot be spread into equity shares of various good companies due to high price of such shares. Mutual Funds are in a much better position to effectively spread your investments across various sectors and among several products available in the market. This is called risk diversification and can effectively shield the steep slide in the value of your investments.
  • Thus, we can say that Mutual funds are better options for investments as they offer regular investors a chance to diversify their portfolios, which is something they may not be able to do if they decide to make direct investments in stock market or bond market. These are particularly good for small investors who have limited funds and are not aware of the intricacies of stock markets. For example, if you want to build a diversified portfolio of 20 scrips, you would probably need Rs 2,00,000 to get started (assuming that you make minimum investment of Rs 10000 per scrip). However, you can invest in some of the diversified Mutual Fund schemes for an low as Rs.10,000/-

What are risks by investing funds in Mutual Funds :

We are aware that investments in stock market are risky as the value of our investments goes up or down with the change in prices of the stocks where we have invested. Therefore, the biggest risk for an investor in Mutual Funds is the market risk. However, different Schemes of Mutual Funds have different risk profile, for example, the Debt Schemes are far less risk than the equity funds. Similarly, Balance Funds are likely to be more risky than Debt Schemes, but less risky than the equity schemes.

What is the difference between Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds :

Hedge Funds are the investment portfolios which are aggressively managed and uses advanced investment strategies, such as leveraged, long, short and derivative positions in both domestic and international markets with a goal of generating high returns. In case of Hedged Funds, the number of investors is usually small and minimum investment required is large. Moreover, they are more risky and generally the investor is not allowed to withdraw funds before a fixed tenure.

Some other important Terms Used in Mutual Funds

Sale Price. It is the price you pay when you invest in a scheme and is also called Offer Price . It may include a sales load.

Repurchase Price. – It is the price at which a Mutual Funds repurchases its units and it may include a back-end load. This is also called Bid Price.

Redemption Price. It is the price at which open-ended schemes repurchase their units and close-ended schemes redeem their units on maturity. Such prices are NAV related.

Sales Load / Front End Load. It is a charge collected by a scheme when it sells the units. Also called, Front-end load. Schemes which do not charge a load at the time of entry are called No Load schemes.

Repurchase / Back-end Load. It is a charge collected by a Mufual Funds when it buys back / Repurchases the units from the unit holders.

How the 5 biggest online travel agencies are expanding beyond mobile bookings

    April 14, 2014

    Kayak’s mobile app

The next generation of mobile innovation for online travel agencies is moving away from transactions to influencing all parts of the travel experience, including loyalty programs, personalized messages and real-world sales.

Mobile Marketer looked at the mobile offerings from five online travel brands: Expedia, Travelocity, Kayak, Orbitz and Priceline. Although streamlining the mobile commerce experience is still a big priority for many, brands are also looking at how to leverage other mediums to gain market share.

“We re actively thinking about ways to use mobile devices in the future of hotel travel,” said John Caine, chief product officer at Priceline, Norwalk, CT.

“Can a phone unlock a door?” he said. “Do you need a concierge? One of the most exciting things about our space is the rapid pace of technical innovation. Every new technology brings an opportunity to innovate.”

Here is a look at how all five brands are taking their mobile strategies to the next level, in alphabetical order.

Similar to Starbucks and Sephora, Expedia is playing up content instead of commerce in its newest application revamp.

Earlier this month, Expedia rolled out a new feature called Media Lounge within its app that recommends other travel-themed apps. Media Lounge is aimed at increasing app retention with more than aggressive mobile-only offers, which is a common tactic for most online travel marketers (see story ).

    The updated app

The brand s iPhone and Android app is also set up so that consumers can view and share itineraries and opt-in for notifications specific to a trip, such as gate changes or delays.

Moreover, Expedia has pulled its Expedia Rewards loyalty program into the app so that travelers can redeem points for making mobile bookings.

Expedia s mobile Web site is more geared towards spurring quick transactions, but the site does include the itinerary features. There is also a mobile Web feature called Scratchpad that syncs up cross-screen searches so that consumers can save hotels and flights that can then be accessed on any device.

Expedia is among a growing group of online travel brands that are leveraging Big Data to rethink the mobile and tablet traveling experiences. For instance, the company analyzes booking patterns to match travelers up to the best hotels and flights (see story ).

Priceline acquired Kayak at the end of 2013 for $1.8 billion, which could reflect other consolidations to come as mobile becomes a bigger focus in the online travel space.

Kayak continues to operate as an independent company, with iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and Kindle Fire apps as well as a mobile site.

Similar to Expedia, Kayak also offers additional app features including flight trackers and a tool to manage itineraries.

However, Kayak s app also pulls in some other interesting information into the app, such as baggage fees, weather and images of destinations. The paid version also includes maps of airport terminals.

    Kayak’s mobile app

Kayak s mobile site is a streamlined version of the app, with the features primarily tailored towards consumers looking for flight, hotel or car information.

We see heavy usage at home, suggesting mobile devices are replacing desktops and laptops roles in booking and planning travel, said Giorgos Zacharia, chief technology officer at Kayak, Stamford, CT.

We re also seeing travelers use mobile devices more for last-minute bookings, one-way flights, short-haul flights and same-day hotel bookings, he said.

With mobile becoming the primary way that some online travel agencies generate last-minute sales, it seems that many brands in this vertical are pouring significantly larger amounts of money into apps versus mobile sites as a way to bolster loyalty and retention.

Kayak also recently launched a tablet Web site for a cleaner and more streamlined experience.

Orbitz is aiming to differentiate its mobile services with a loyalty program that went into place last year. The Orbitz Rewards program places a bigger emphasis on mobile bookings than desktop by awarding consumers with additional points for booking from a smartphone or tablet.

Additionally, members can view hotels in search results with their points already applied (see story ).

When the program launched, a feature called Zap that Bag let consumers earn $25 in bonus points for sending in a mobile photo of a checked bag receipt.

    The Orbitz mobile app

Similar to Expedia, Orbitz is also testing a set of tools that harnesses big data to improve mobile bookings. This set of tools includes heat maps and historical data.

Orbitz has also put a team together that specifically looks at the mobile journey of travelers. This group is responsible for developing some of the non-commerce parts of travel, such as itinerary lookup, updates and alerts.

We re looking at other opportunities to engage with consumers in-trip, starting with ignition around the actual flight experience, said Chris Brown, group vice president of mobile at Orbitz, Chicago.

Priceline is betting more on connected devices and real-world transactions than other brands when it comes to differentiating its mobile strategy.

Most recently, Priceline rolled out a partnership with Routehappy scores that pulls together different pieces of personal criteria to help consumers find the best flight (see story ).

“In our quest to go where the customers are, we re heading into some pretty interesting new territory, including priceline.com s recently-announced debut on the GM in-dash console,” Mr. Caine said. “What s next? The wristwatch? The TV?”

    RouteHappy within the Priceline app

Brett Keller, chief marketing officer at Priceline, Norwalk, CT, also sees a bigger opportunity for Priceline to influence real-world transactions, including on-site transactions at hotel check-ins (see story ).

Priceline launched an in-car app with General Motors Chevrolet earlier this year. The app relies on voice recognition to walk consumers through the process of booking a hotel or flight (see story ).

As marketers increasingly look to move towards more connected digital experiences, mobile plays a crucial role in how marketers will connect the real world to digital.

Travelocity s mobile app and site are still largely focused on transactions, but also includes a few of the same features that the online travel agents do, such as travel planning and management.

Additionally, the app includes a built-in camera that recognizes a credit card to speed up the transaction process and mobile-only deals.

    Travelocity’s mobile site

Travelocity has also worked with responsive design quite a bit.

In fact, the online travel agency claims that the bulk of mobile conversions have switched from iOS to Android as a result of going responsive (see story ).

    Final Take:

Online travel agencies are not evil – but they are bad business

    Jul 23.2014

Great industries are built on great partnerships, and the hospitality sector is no different.

The US hospitality industry, for example, has been built on the partnership of hotel brands and franchisees. In addition, successful partnerships enable growth for all stakeholders, which has been the case for hotel brands and owners over the last quarter-century.

NB: This is an analysis by Vikas Bhakta, founder and CEO of Ve-Go Technologies .

Since the Great Recession of 2009-2010, online travel agencies have held an increased role in the hospitality industry for room distribution.

But, unlike the successful partnership forged between hotel brands and owners, despite what others have said here on Tnooz. I believe OTAs have engaged in business practices that negatively affect not only the hotel industry, but also the communities travelers we serve.

    Tax obligation

When consumers purchase a hotel room, there is a hotel occupancy tax associated – yes, the same hotel occupancy tax AirBnb is currently reviewing with regulators.

In the US, hotel occupancy tax is split between state and local and is a major source of revenue for government budgets.

The table below reflects the difference in tax obligation between OTA bookings, such as Expedia, Hotels.com, or Priceline vsersus traditional and direct hotel bookings:

NB: * refers to room rate (estimated for ease of calculation) ** refers to occupancy tax and fees : mid-range; set by governments, parity by OTAs

Magically, the OTA loophole of deducting commission before calculating tax obligation yields a difference of $3 – which would normally serve as revenue for state and local governments, is now padding OTA bank accounts and profit margins.

With our 15% occupancy tax assumption, every $100 travelers’ spend with Expedia, Hotels.com or Priceline, equals a loss of $3 for state local communities – and a direct profit for OTAs.

In 2013, OTAs are estimated to have accounted for $40B in US hotel sales, if we assume all bookings were paid through OTAs, it would equal $1.2B in annual state local tax revenue shortfall due to the bad business practices of OTAs.

Over the past few years, plenty of US state and local governments have taken the OTA tax remittance loophole to trial, yet few have prevailed .

Even more alarming is the vigorous fight and enormous bankroll OTAs employ to fight against state local governments in courtrooms across America. If you collect full taxes, but fail to remit…

    It’s not a loophole, it’s bad business.

    Guest experience

According to a 2012 JD Powers report. travelers who book on OTAs rated their experience 45 points lower than guests who booked or called the hotel directly.

In many instances, the lack of flexibility offered with OTA rates creates friction between hotels and their guests.

As a front desk agent, I have personally experienced guests who would like to modify/cancel their stay, but due to the lack of flexibility in OTA rate rules – we were forced to have unhappy travelers stay with us.

OTAs should ensure the entire travel experience is memorable – not simply prey on booking commissions then deliver inferior customer service along the way.

Consumers who argue OTAs ability to aggregate hotel listings has provided a huge benefit for search booking – I would agree with them 100%.

But, JD Powers North American Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study states travelers who book on OTAs are more likely to report problems – I’ve known more than my fair share of hoteliers who say LRA (Last Room Available) has a different meaning for OTA guests.

Unfortunately, no hotelier aspires to provide inferior service to OTA guests, they would much rather provide great service and be compensated fully for their effort. When guest experience suffers due to the distribution model…

It’s not a better distribution solution, it’s bad business.

    AdWords marketing

OTAs, in their simplest form, are websites with outsized marketing budgets. which are paid for by outsized booking commissions.

For example, Priceline and Expedia two of the biggest overall spenders with Google – combine to account for $2.5 billion in annual spend on Google AdWords.

OTAs bid on hotel names to compete with hotels and drive up marketing costs for hotels, while simultaneously increasing distribution costs as each booking displaced to OTAs entails a significantly higher customer acquisition cost for the hotel.

Today, OTAs operate globally at scale and possess marketing budgets that surpass the largest of global hospitality brands.

In addition, OTAs operate with the ability to undercut savvy marketers with fewer resources. If OTAs out-bid you on AdWords, on your own hotel name…

It’s not superior marketing, it’s bad business.

    The Billboard Effect

In 2010, hoteliers were led to believe OTA presence would lead to an increase in overall bookings, as well as direct bookings. At face value, more bookings and more revenue seem great, but as plenty have found, an increase in bookings and top line revenue does not always translate to profits.

In fact, HAMA HotelAVE published their findings on profit reduction due to OTA payment structure.

In particular, the Expedia Partner Preference program has been found to decrease profitability for hotel owners. This begs the question: what are the risks associated with OTA bookings eroding profit?

Incremental revenue at the expense of profit undermines a hotels’ ability to deliver quality product service on a daily basis, as well as invest in refurbishments capital expenditures on an on-going basis. If incremental revenue erodes profit…

It’s not incremental, it’s bad business.

    Risk versus Reward

For hotel owners, the worst business practice employed by OTAs is the commission structure: 15-30%. For decades, the industry-standard for distribution commission has been 10% – at that commission fee, all partners can succeed without endangering the other’s ability to grow and expand.

Since 2010, OTAs have experienced a meteoric rise in share of bookings; in turn, hotel owners have experienced a reduction in profit margin, relative to top line revenue increase.

In other words, OTAs are eroding the profitability experienced by hotel owners during previous economic expansion cycles – and in some cases, OTAs have eclipsed profits margins of hotel owners.

Coming off the worst recession in the history of the US hotel industry, owners expect the greatest reward, for bearing the greatest risk – owning the real estate.

But, OTAs, and their irrational commission fees, have changed the risk/reward relationship for hotel owners.

As good investors do, when risk outweighs reward, they find somewhere else to invest.

For example, as the US hotel industry exceeds 2008 Occupancy, ADR, and REVPAR levels and nears the peak of the cycle, construction activity fails to match previous cycles – with a 50% reduction in new rooms opened 2014 YTD .

Furthermore, secondary tertiary markets – with the exception of Oil Gas markets – have almost non-existent supply growth when compared to previous cycles.

Muted supply is considered healthy for the economics of current hotels – but comes at a loss for travelers seeking more options at competitive prices. If the risk of building a hotel is greater than the reward, hotel owners stop building hotels…

It’s not rocket science, it’s bad business.

For most industries, distribution costs are marginal, at best. Amazon  has built an empire by lowering distribution costs for a number of verticals.

    Their margin is our opportunity.

Amazon prides itself on lowering prices for consumers, by lowering distribution costs. Conversely, OTAs are increasing prices for travelers, by increasing distribution costs.

Today’s OTAs may be a necessary evil. but with the explosion of smartphones, mobile apps, and open APIs – the possibilities are endless for tomorrow’s mobile travel agencies

Why are airfare prices so high, despite low oil prices?

Because the airplane’s are (nearly) full. A business does not lower prices when they are already selling out their supply of product.

The way that lower costs lead to reduced fares is that airlines will add more capacity (they already are doing so) due to the lower costs. When this additional capacity comes online the fares will drop to keep it (nearly) full.

A restaurant or supermarket can make quick adjustments in supply when their costs, or market demand, changes. It takes a lot of time and money to acquire new (or used) airplanes or to economically remove aircraft from service. New aircraft also come with long-term commitments so an airline must be convinced that it will be able to deploy the new capacity profitably for the duration of that commitment.

In the case of current fuel prices, there isn’t any guarantee that the current low prices will last for an extended period of time. In fact, the chances are good that fuel will be significantly more expensive than today when any aircraft ordered today are delivered.

What Are the Best Cheap Hotel Chains? #peru #travel

    Best Cheap Hotel Chains

    Cheap Hotels Buying Guide

We researched many of the nation’s best-known economy-priced hotel chains, and while all have their ups and downs, Days Inn (double room starting at about $70 a night) and Microtel (double room starting at about $80 a night) stand out as the best options. Both offer more desirable amenities and benefits than the competition, including guaranteed Wi-Fi and free breakfast, and also receive high marks from guests for performance in most locations.

Two second-best cheap hotel chains are Red Roof Inn (double room starting at about $70 a night), which boasts strong reviews but is a bit stingy with amenities, and Motel 6 (double room starting at about $55 a night), which slips slightly in performance ratings but offers one of the lowest prices for a night’s sleep. Many Knights Inn (double room starting at about $65 a night) locations should be “drive-bys,” reviewers advise, due to outdated and dirty facilities and generally unaccommodating staff. Another chain, Super 8 (double room starting at about $75) is often a safe choice but failed to qualify as a best cheap hotel due to prices that have been climbing, fewer money-saving deals, and relatively more mixed reviews.

This guide to cheap hotel chains offers tips on what to look for when perusing reviews posted by previous guests and the benefits and amenities that even frugal travelers can expect in the better-performing chains. Although much of what makes a hotel acceptable is service and comfort, several other factors are worth considering when making travel arrangements. If you’re a smartphone user and/or always carry a laptop, look for places with free Wi-Fi; if you’re a frequent traveler, a loyalty program might earn you free nights or even miles to trade for airline tickets. Some sustenance at the start of the day may be high on your list of priorities; ditto for a location near downtown, the airport, a beach, but far from neighborhoods that seem sketchy.

At the end of the day, though, if you’re just looking for a place to rest, most locations belonging to the best of the cheap hotel chains will meet your standards. The room will be clean (that goes for the bathroom, too) and contain a comfortable bed; check-in will be simple and speedy; and employees will be friendly and helpful. Our research indicates that business travelers often care more about friendly service and a relaxing room while leisure travelers seem more interested in amenities, like breakfast and a pool, especially when traveling with children.

It is important to note that within all price categories, budget and otherwise, there is lots of variation in room rates, physical facilities, amenities, and service. Price differences typically reflect location. If you’re in a metropolitan area like New York City or Chicago, say, hotel prices across the board are higher, although the chains on our list likely will be among the cheapest. The day of the week and time of year also affect rates. Weekdays tend to be more expensive than weekends, for example, and holidays and in-seasons (e.g. leaf-peeping in October in New England) usually correlate with higher prices.

Additionally, many national hotel chains are operated as franchises, and those we researched follow this model. This means that despite the best efforts of corporate headquarters, there’s only so much uniformity in facilities, features, and service. Some mass surveys, by J.D. Power and Consumer Reports for example, compile meta data that refer to the chains as a whole. Guest reviews posted online of specific locations, meanwhile, may deviate wildly from the survey norms. So when choosing a cheap hotel chain for your next trip, use our assessment of performance and features as a starting point but make sure to check out the particular properties you’ll be visiting.

What – Type – of RA Do You Have? #types #of

    #

What Type of RA Do You Have?

Not too many years ago, a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was just that a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. And if you received that diagnosis, your treatment was pretty much the same as anyone else who received it large doses of aspirin followed by a corticosteroid and/or disease-modifying drugs such as gold or sulfasalazine.

Just as treatment has changed through the years, so has the thinking about RA in some cases. Rather than a single disease with a one-size-fits-all treatment strategy, some researchers believe that rheumatoid arthritis may actually be a collection of diseases. Genetic differences in individuals, they say, could affect the various features of the disease, the factors that trigger its development and the best treatments. Their hope is that a better understanding of the differences between the diseases we call RA may provide insights that could eventually lead to new ways to treat and, perhaps in some cases, even prevent it.

    Seropositive and Seronegative RA

The most recognized differences in RA cases are between seropositive and seronegative disease, according David S. Pisetsky, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and immunology at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C.

Seropositive means that blood tests show the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCPs), also called anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs). Anti-CCPs are antibodies produced against proteins in the body undergoing a molecular change in structure called citrullination. They are present in approximately 60 to 80 percent of people diagnosed with RA. Studies have found that, for many people, the antibodies precede the development of clinical symptoms by 5 to 10 years. If you have symptoms consistent with RA and a positive test for the antibody, an RA diagnosis is almost a certainty.

Previously, seropositivity was defined in terms of an antibody called rheumatoid factor (RF). Rheumatoid factor is an antibody directed to sites on other antibodies and can be detected by a variety of tests. While most patients with anti-CCP antibodies are also positive for rheumatoid factor, the RF antibody can occur in patients with many other conditions, including infection. Anti-CCP is more specific for RA and is becoming the preferred test for making this distinction.

Seronegative means that tests don t show the presence of these antibodies in your blood. You can have RA without being seropositive, but it is easier to meet the criteria if you are positive, says Dr. Pisetsky.

Aside from the presence or lack of antibodies, there are a few other differences in people with seropositive and seronegative RA. For one, people with seropositive, or anti-CCP-positive, disease have a common sequence of amino acids called the shared epitope. This shared amino acid sequence is encoded in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genetic site, or locus, which produces proteins that control immune responses. It is not known how the amino acid sequence contributes to RA, but it has been proposed that it attaches to parts of proteins called citrullinated peptides, and therefore contributes to the production of anti-CCP antibodies. Interestingly, smoking is strongly related to the development of RA in patients with the shared epitope. Scientists believe that smoking causes inflammation in the lung, which leads to protein citrullination which in turns induces anti-CCP antibodies in genetically susceptible people with the shared epitope.

Other differences have to do with the risk factors associated with seropositive and seronegative disease.

While one might predict that anti-CCP-negative RA would be milder disease, that isn t always the case. And although it is unlikely that a person with seronegative RA will ever turn positive, it is possible for people with seronegative disease to eventually be diagnosed with a different disease altogether, Dr. Pisetsky says.

    Dr. Pisetsky gives these examples:

    • A person diagnosed with seronegative RA may eventually develop a skin rash that would cause the doctor to change the diagnosis to psoriatic arthritis.
    • Joint fluid tests in what appears to be RA could lead to a diagnosis of chronic gout.
    • Osteoarthritis can sometimes be confused with seronegative RA.

    A Common Clinical Endpoint

Some researchers contend that RA is not a separate and distinct disease, but rather represents a common clinical endpoint for various starting points, each of which is guided by as yet poorly understood aspects of the genetic background of the affected individual, says John D. Carter, MD, associate professor, chief of the division of rheumatology and director of clinical research at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Depending on the trigger and the individual s genetic makeup you get different manifestations of what we call RA, and these different presentations are lumped into one diagnosis, he says.

In addition to the shared epitope associated with seropositive disease, genetic makeup may account for other differences such as extraarticular manifestations (beyond the joints) including lung or eye involvement or rheumatoid nodules, Dr. Carter says. Researchers are looking for genetic differences in individuals with RA that may explain variances as disease severity, manifestations, triggers and treatment responses that may have significant consequences for future research and the development of new therapeutic interventions.

This obviously could be tremendously important when it comes to treatment, as a predictor of response, says Dr. Carter. Many are now looking for biomarkers to predict response. I believe this feeds into the same theory. A different biomarker signature probably exists for each different type of what we now call RA.

7 New Travel Websites That Are Revolutionizing The Way We Book Trips

    The Flexible Finder

    [[nid:1507938]]

Admit it: You type full-sentence questions into Google because it always seems to find the right answers. But up until Adioso hit the Web, there wasn’t a travel search engine where you could make a natural-language inquiry and get an instant response. Now, you can type in questions like, “what’s the cheapest flight to Vegas this weekend,” or simply, “take me somewhere warm tomorrow,” and wait for results. This revolutionary tool lets flexible travelers type in random prompts to find the best deals anywhere in the world any time. It thinks like you think, which is a refreshing change from the box-ticking nightmare of finding a good deal within a broad area on other sites.

    The Matchmaker

    [[nid:1507940]]

Behold the rise of the (bed)sharing economy! Easynest made headlines in July with its novel approach to penny-pincher accommodation: sleeping with strangers. Essentially, the San Francisco startup links single travelers with solo “hosts” to share a double or twin hotel room in select cities. Pairs typically examine each other’s profiles and message back and forth before agreeing to a night in close quarters, and the solo traveler must pay the host for a portion of the room before turning up at the hotel.

    The Travel Planner

    [[nid:1507942]]

Launched just a few weeks ago, Trekkel claims to be the first travel recommendation engine and personal itinerary planner to meld the best of crowd-sourced ratings, curated content and friends’ comments into one space. The site experienced a few kinks in the system at the start, but it is now functional for travel planning in 15 North American cities, with a goal of expanding into Europe in the coming months. All you need to do is pick your destination, rate the elements of travel you find most important and wait for Trekkel to do the elbow work.

    The Happy Hunter

Are you happy with your experience in the sky? Researchers at Euromonitor International said in a recent report that this question is of increasing importance to travelers who seek higher “happiness scores” on sites like Routehappy when booking a trip. The new startup helps passengers choose a flight based as much on its quality as its price by informing them of the airline and route that will best suit their specific needs. Happy scores go up with smile-inducing features like larger seats, nicer planes and better entertainment options.

    The Last-Minute Savior

    [[nid:1507946]]

Travel may just be the most unpredictable of activities, and there’s nothing vacationers hate worse than a bit of fine print that doesn’t read their way. That’s where Roomer  sweeps in to save the day. This new website acts as the “stub-hub” of the hotel industry, allowing travelers who are unable to use their hotel room to list the pad at a discounted price, thus giving spontaneous vacationers a chance to snag a last-minute deal. The site offers sellers a safe and effective solution that reduces the cost of canceling a room, while providing savvy travelers with steep discounts at some amazing properties. It’s a win-win all around.

    The Group Organizer

    [[nid:1507948]]

Planning for a large group of people can be a nightmare no matter how you go about it, but the new website Flights With Friends hopes to make the process a touch less mind-boggling. Ideal for sporting events, family gatherings, student travel, conventions or weddings, groups can consolidate their “reply all” email chains, search more than 150 sites for airfares and hotels, graze the TripAdvisor reviews, chat, sort and vote on the best options before booking a trip with the Expedia Price Match Guarantee. For groups with different budgets and opinions, this is your go-to site to make order out of disorder.

    The Hotel Time Machine

    [[nid:1507950]]

Have you ever purchased a hotel room online and then found yourself playing the “what if” game? What if you purchased too soon? What if the price was about to go down? What if you had only waited one more week? Now, hotel search engine startup The Suitest has introduced a groundbreaking prediction feature that it’s calling a veritable “Hotel Time Machine.” Launched in August by a former quantitative finance analyst at Goldman Sachs, The Suitest uses the same event-modeling techniques that hedge funds use to determine whether a mortgage-backed security will default. The result is the type of complex price forecasting of hotels that travelers previously only found on airfare sites like Kayak or Bing Travel.

Los Angeles Workers Compensation Attorney Fees – Serving LA & Ventura

    #

Los Angeles Workers’ Comp Lawyers Fees

    Attorney Fees

Attorney fees in workers compensation cases are regulated by the Labor Code and the Workers Compensation Appeals Board.

Attorney fees in workers compensation cases are contingent fees. If you lose your case, you owe nothing. If you get a settlement or award of benefits, my office gets 15%. The 15% attorney fee is paid from the employee’s workers compensation benefits. In a few cases, the employer might have to pay the attorney fee.

In most cases, the 15% is based on the permanent disability award.

If my office obtains other benefits after having gone to the Board, I request 15% to be withheld from past due benefits.

If the case is settled, my office requests attorney fees of 15% on the amount of the settlement.

California has one of the lowest percentages for attorney fees in the nation. The Labor Code provides for attorney fees between 9% and 12%. In practice, the Workers Compensation Appeals Board has approved 15% attorney fees for many years. My office as well as all other workers compensation lawyers in the Los Angeles area all charge and get a 15% fee.

How Long Do Doctoral Programs Take to Complete? #how #long #are

How Long Do Doctoral Programs Take to Complete?

The amount of time it takes to finish a doctoral degree program varies depending on a number of factors, such as the amount of credits you need or whether you attend part-time or full-time. A doctorate is often required for research, higher education teaching and advanced medical fields; however, this degree may also be required in other fields or be beneficial in advancing in your career.

    Doctoral Program Lengths

Most doctoral programs take between four and seven years to complete, although schools may allow students up to 10 years to earn a doctorate degree, depending upon the program. If you find that you need more time, some schools will grant extensions for extenuating circumstances. To be granted this time, you’ll need to show intention to finish, planning and proper documentation.

Important Facts About Doctoral Degree Programs

Anthropology, comparative literature, biology, mathematics, history, sociology, psychology, linguistics, computer science

    Fully available for select programs

    Lawyer, psychologist, physician, surgeon

May be mandatory, depending vocation; some occupations require certification or licensing

    Factors Affecting Completion Time

Your time as a doctoral student may be shorter or longer than the average, depending on a number of factors. Some doctoral degree programs have requirements that take longer to complete because of their nature; for example, a research project might lengthen your time because you’d need to design a study, find participants, run the study and finalize your findings. Financial aid is another factor that can affect the amount of time you need; some schools cut off financial aid for students who take longer than the set amount of time to complete their degree. Without financial aid, you may need to work, which can leave less time for your studies.

    Enrollment Status

If you decide to enroll only part-time in your doctoral program, you will most likely take longer in earning your degree than students who enroll full-time. Many schools will allow you to switch between part-time and full-time enrollment from semester to semester, so you may slow down or accelerate your degree program as needed.

    Previous Education

You may enter a doctoral degree program immediately after earning an undergraduate degree, or you may earn a master’s degree first. Some programs prefer you to have graduate school experience before entering a program, but others don’t. If you earn a master’s degree before entering a doctoral program, you may be able to apply some credits towards your doctoral degree, which could reduce the amount of time spent in the program.

    Completion of Dissertation

Before you can be granted a doctoral degree, you must successfully complete the required number of credit hours, pass any required written and oral exams, and write and defend your dissertation. A dissertation is a book-length work demonstrating a student’s knowledge in his or her chosen field. It can often take two years or more to complete a dissertation. You can cut down on the amount of time you’ll take in completing a dissertation by choosing a school with an adequate support system for doctoral students, and by asking for help when you need it.

Before starting out on their first major expedition (an 18-hour drive to Florida from their home in Springfield, Ohio) with their 2-year-old and 4-year old, the Larsons hung little numbered tickets above each boy’s car seat, one for every hour of the trip. “They were redeemed for wrapped treats they could play with or eat along the journey,” says mom Therese. “They loved pulling down the ticket when I asked in my conductor voice: ‘Tickets, please!'”

Are travel Web sites really different?

    Ellen Creager McClatchy/Tribune News

A traveler booking a night at the Ft. Wayne Marriott hotel on Aug. 19-20 may get a surprise when checking prices online.

Expedia. Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity and Cheaptickets.com uniformly quote $149 before taxes.

Eight sites and just two prices?

Either this is the biggest coincidence since Laurel met Hardy or something else is going on here.

    Who owns whom?

That something else has nothing to do with the Ft. Wayne Marriott or any specific hotel.

It is a system of sophisticated algorithms that control hotel prices, even on the secondary market of travel Web sites the high-low, the profit margin, the supply.

In addition, sites have recently slashed booking fees, cancellation fees and change fees, narrowing differences in price among rivals and hotels’ own Web sites.

But the biggest development is that travel sites keep swallowing one another with the avarice of the Donner party at lunch.

Just four corporations now own most of the major online booking sites.

    We’re talking major inbreeding, folks.

This is not a complete list of what they own in the world (it would take pages), but here are some highlights:

  • Sabre Holdings Inc.: Owns Travelocity.com. IgoUgo.com. LastMinute.com and the gigantic Sabre reservations system used by the travel industry. Travelocity also powers the search on Yahoo! Travel.

According to June figures from Hitwise, which tracks popularity of travel Web sites, only MapQuest and Google Maps outrank Expedia, with Travelocity, Priceline, Yahoo! Travel, TripAdvisor, Orbitz, Hotwire and Hotels.com close behind.

But does it really matter which site you use? In my experience, hotel prices vary more with the day, date or occupancy rate of a property rather than which booking site you use.

Sometimes, a site may work a deal with a hotel chain, and you’ll see a huge discount. If you are flexible about where to stay, you might tumble into a great deal. Eureka!

But more often, your choice will run the gamut from A to B. Not worth an all-day search to find the best hotel deal in all of Ft. Wayne.

    Flexibility Savings: Shopping and Flying

Follow these six rules to find cheaper airline tickets whenever you want to fly.

    1. Shop for airfare on Tuesdays

The cheapest day to shop for airfare is Tuesday about 3 p.m. eastern time. It s when you ll find the most airline sales, and the competition will match the sale prices to keep up. Always check prices on an airfare comparison shopping site to be sure of getting the best deal available.

    • Tip: Since many sales often run Tuesdays through Thursdays, waiting to shop til Friday or the weekend could cost you a deal.

    2. Set airfare alerts

Sometimes, deals come out of the blue (sometimes mistake fares do, too) but you won t know about them unless you sign up for airfare alerts . Get the deals you want delivered in real-time on your phone or tablet or laptop the moment they become available.

    • Tip: When you receive an alert and if you like what you see book immediately. There is a lot of competitions for the best deals and they go quickly.

    3. Fly the cheapest days

Generally, the cheapest days to fly year-round are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Again, always compare airfare prices so you ll know for sure.

    • Tip: Cheapest days to fly can vary around holidays. Thanksgiving is a good example as the Wednesday before Turkey Day is one of the most expensive days to fly all year.

    4. Fly the cheapest times

Be flexible enough to fly when others don t want to. This includes flights at dawn, flights at the dinner hour and late-night flights and red-eyes.

    • Tip: Noise-canceling headphones are great for napping on planes.

    5. Fly connecting routes

Are you flexible enough to endure a longer flight? A connecting flight with a stop (or two) can sometimes save as much as 50 percent over a non-stop.

    • Tip: This is generally not the case when it comes to hub-to-hub flights of 90 minutes or less.

    6. Fly out of larger airports

Are you flexible enough to drive an extra hour or two  so you can fly in and out of a larger airport? In most cases, bigger airports have better deals, and it maybe be worth the extra effort.

    • Tip: Be sure to factor in the cost of the extra gas and maybe higher parking prices to be sure a longer is worth your time.

Online Travel Agencies Are a Safe Investment – The Motley Fool

Online Travel Agencies Are a Safe Investment

Online travel agencies are a great investment option for more reasons than immediately meet the eye.

    Jan 21, 2014 at 6:07PM

It used to be that if you believed a rental-car company would do well, you would invest in one. If you thought a hotel was going to be profitable in the future, you would invest in it. That remains a logical strategy, but today there is another option: online travel agencies, or OTAs.

Years ago there was no such thing. Today OTAs are the fastest-growing entity in the travel sector and make for sensible investments.

    OTAs are growing

In 2012, the online travel business in the US crossed the $100 billion threshold. Since that monumental year, hotel bookings via OTAs have risen 12%. Comparatively, the increase of bookings made directly on hotel websites was only up 5%. With hotel websites attracting just 33% of all bookings, OTAs are becoming increasingly popular.

Electronic-revenue maximization company eRevMax believes OTAs are popular because of the metasearch features offered. It found that 60% of travelers comparison shop, which makes OTAs a popular place to do business.

Others in the industry are taking notice of this growth. In order to boost revenue, traditional travel agencies are copying the OTA strategy and investing in technology and building an online presence.

While some airlines and hotels shy away from OTAs to avoid paying commission fees, independent hotels are moving in the opposite direction. OTAs have a much larger advertising budget, access to more consumer data, and more success at drawing in online traffic. Independent hotels therefore find OTAs to be useful marketing platforms to help reach markets previously unavailable.

    OTAs as a diversification strategy

Risk goes along with all investments, but diversification can protect investors against some types of risk. Unsystematic risk events are negative events that affect one company or sweep across one sector. By investing in many sectors, you can limit the impact of unsystematic risk on your portfolio.

It is wise to diversify outside of the technology and travel sectors, as there are many unsystematic risk events that can hurt both sectors, sometimes simultaneously. Having completely unrelated investments may protect against this. Within travel and tech, however, the stock of OTAs make a great diversification option and a good entry point for beginners.

OTAs offer a buffer zone. OTAs sell airfare, rental cars, hotels, cruises, vacation packages, and sometimes even tours and activities. By doing business across industries, an OTA is more sheltered from isolated risk events than the individual companies whose tickets it sells.

Mark Mahaney of RBC Capital Markets noted an example of this in his online consumer activity report. While Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE ) experienced a decrease in US paid hotel rates, it experienced a countering increase in domestic organic hotel bookings.  If invested solely in US hotels at this time, the effects of the decrease in bookings would have been noticeable. If invested in Expedia, however, the increase in bookings from other products Expedia sells would have offset the negative effect.

A second common suggestion for diversification is to invest partially in foreign securities. This is to not be adversely affected by an overreaching domestic economic event like a downturn in the US economy. An OTA stock can help diversify in this manner since OTAs typically own and operate websites that service the globe.

Mahaney noted in his report that while Priceline.com (NASDAQ:PCLN )  experienced a drop in US paid-hotel purchases, this was “offset by increases in the same category by its Booking.com subsidiary, which is known for servicing Europe.” By operating websites across the world, Priceline was able to offer investors a buffer against the drop in US bookings.

    OTAs worth consideration

Priceline is one OTA that can help investors diversify in both ways. It sells products from multiple industries and through its subsidiaries operates in more than 180 countries. With a website portfolio with such a global reach, the company is less likely to be hurt by unsystematic risk events in a given economy.

Priceline’s focus going forward will be to expand in emerging markets. The company may look to another acquisition as it works to obtain a larger international market share.

Priceline stock rose 80% last year.  Based on third-quarter results, operating income has increased the last two years at a 31% rate. Owing to an 83% increase from 2010-2011, operating income has risen 219% since 2010.

Diversification does not just benefit investors. If companies can manage to diversify by offering a wide variety of products, its a great revenue strategy. Expedia is considering doing just that; and as it does investors will reap the benefits.

Like Priceline, Expedia wants to expand its offering of tours and activities. An Expedia managing director was quoted as saying that the company is working to become an “end-to-end travel service.” It is yet to be seen whether it will accomplish this by contracting directly with suppliers or acquiring start-ups that already have those supplier relationships developed.

HomeAway   (NASDAQ:AWAY ) is a portal for renting vacation homes worldwide. It is unlike Priceline and Expedia as it only sells lodging, but it still offers investors a risk buffer by operating websites across 171 countries.

HomeAway acquired more than 20 companies since 2005 and is expected to make another acquisition in the future if it goes through with a second public offering. With each acquisition the parent company becomes stronger and better insulates investors from risk.

    Consider Action

Investors should take comfort in the fact that OTAs are conglomerates. By having a strong multinational presence and bringing many industries under one parent company, OTAs offer a smooth entrance to travel stocks. With travel booking moving more online, the exponential growth of the past few years should continue to make OTA stocks a strong buy.

At more than $1,000 a share, Priceline requires a high buy-in. It is far from the only option however. To find more companies that offer risk buffers, look to where the acquisitions are occurring.

Investing in OTAs will quickly get you a hand in every industry in the travel sector. As those industries rise and fall, you will experience steady growth thanks to the diversification strategy inherent in the OTA business model.

Why are airfare prices so high, despite low oil prices?

Why discount travel sites are angry with Delta #wholesale #travel

    #discount travel sites
    #

Here’s why discount travel sites are angry with Delta

Finding cheap airfare on discount travel sites is great for consumers—but airlines have to play ball for it to truly work.

A group of these sites, including TripAdvisor, CheapOair, and Hipmunk, is banding together publicly against Delta Air Lines Inc. s DAL recent removal of flight information and fares from their listings. Their complaints are relayed in a report released today by the Travel Technology Association (Travel Tech, as it calls itself), a trade group representing such sites, according to The Wall Street Journal . Travel Tech, on behalf of these sites, is asking the Transportation Department to review its report and decide whether carriers like Delta ought to be required to make their flight data widely available to all sites.

Delta, for its part, has said that it never authorized these sites to use its data.

This isn t the first time these issues have come up among low airfare sites. Last year, the discount site Routehappy lamented, in a tweet to a customer, that it was one of more than 30 sites from which Delta had pulled its data (nowadays the Routehappy site once again shows Delta information):

In recent years, CheapAir (not to be confused with CheapOair), Air Gorilla, Globester, and Bookit, among others, have all had Delta take away flight data from their listings, though not all have publicly taken action. And this isn t just about Delta: today s study points out examples of other airlines that are, attempting to restrict access to their fare and schedule information, reduce the ability of consumers to easily compare prices, and drive travelers to their own websites, which do not offer price comparisons with other airlines, the report says. In other words, this is an industry-wide issue just beginning to heat up after many years.

Delta, in a brief statement, told the WSJ that it would continue partnering with a limited, but responsive and adaptable group of online retailers.” Today, the sites involved in Travel Tech s study may be wondering why Delta does not appear to deem them responsive and adaptable.

    Bachelor’s Program Overview

A healthcare administration bachelor’s program combines traditional business courses with healthcare courses. The healthcare courses may be focused on business concepts or may be more scientific. Best Cheap Travel Sites

    Cheap Travel Sites Buying Guide

There are hundreds of travel websites offering the “cheapest” prices on airfare, hotels, and car rentals for any destination you choose. Navigating them all is no easy task, however, especially given how much of your hard-earned cash is on the line.

Consumers will find themselves wooed by online travel agencies and meta-search engines, eBay-style bidding and/or opaque bookings, hot deals, top-secret deals, and even deals on deals .

Meta-search engines are especially useful for searching many travel websites at one go, but you’ll also have success with other tools. Our picks for best, good, and don’t bother travel sites represent a variety of search models and are based on factors such as policies, customer support, and whether the site actually delivers low-cost travel. The results of our research show that Hotwire.com and Bing.com/travel are best travel deal sites; Priceline and Kayak are good cheap travel websites; and Orbitz is one you can afford to ignore.

For the third consecutive year, a 2008 study by J.D. Power and Associates named Hotwire.com the highest rated travel site in terms of customer satisfaction, with Priceline.com close behind. Despite the high rating, our research found that these travel sites attract a large share of user complaints, most of which stem from miscommunication between airlines or hotels and the travel website. User reviews of discount travel websites note the difficulty of holding these third-party intermediaries responsible for errors in an itinerary and stress that you must be very persistent when seeking to correct mistakes. Travelocity.com and Expedia.com, two well-known travel deals sites, garner lower customer satisfaction ratings in the J.D. Power survey, which the survey suggests may reflect fees imposed by airlines rather than disappointment with the sites themselves. We do not include these two sites on our list of best and good cheap travel websites because the information they provide is available through meta-search travel sites like Bing.com/travel and Kayak.com, which we found to be more useful.

According to Forrester Research. Americans spend $86 billion a year booking flights, hotels, and car rentals using travel websites. Major players like Orbitz.com, Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, Hotwire.com, and Priceline.com find low rates on airfare, hotels, car rentals, and vacation packages by having you input your travel information and then searching data supplied by travel providers for the best rates. Some cheap travel websites let you search multiple days in a single search so you can compare prices and then pick the deal that suits your schedule and budget.

To a certain extent, travel deal sites function as an extension of an airline’s, hotel’s, or car rental agency’s website. For example: On a recent search for a flight from Chicago to New York, one budget travel site quoted a $228 round trip; going directly to the carrier’s website generated the exact same price. This doesn’t mean that cheap travel websites are without benefits. Using a discount travel site lets you search for better deals by, say, flying one airline to your destination and another one back home — with a carrier’s website you can’t do that. Travel deals sites also let you make arrangements for lodging and car rentals, giving you the potential for more savings.

Whether you book with a travel deals site or through the provider directly there are several things you should be mindful of. Some flights and hotels might look like a bargain but when taxes and fees are added in, the price might not be so cheap. And airlines have recently started charging extra for carry-on baggage, in-flight meals, extra foot room, and blankets and pillows. Always read all the fine print before booking: it could mean the difference between an OK deal and a great deal.

Who We Are – Continental Travelnurse #cheap #travel

    #traveling nurse jobs
    #

    Who We Are

Continental Travelnurse was founded in 2000. Its founder is an expert in the travel nurse industry in the United States, where the practice began. In Florida, every winter tourists flocked down from the north and hospitals experienced a huge but short-term increase in demand year after year, especially among the elderly. That three or four month surge was met by hiring “travel nurses” — talented professionals from out of state who enjoyed a season in the sun while receiving top pay for their much-needed skills.

This experience inspired the launch of Continental Travelnurse, the premier travel nurse company in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Seasonal demands and the worldwide shortage of skilled professionals mean travel nurses are more in demand than ever. That’s where you benefit.

Continental Travelnurse deals only with select clients in the most desirable locations in the UK. Our travel nurses are top-notch, so we only provide them to the best clients. When you partner with us, your reputation precedes you.

Travel nurses enjoy above-average pay rates and benefits, as well as the possibility of experiencing four different places in one year, such as the countryside, the seaside, a college town, and a city. Unlike temp agency nurses, you ll be supplied with the hospital uniform. Our travel nurses are part of the team and dress identically to staff nurses.

    Are Non-Refundable Airline Tickets Refundable?

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on July 18, 2008

We are planning to purchase non-refundable airline tickets. Expedia told us the tickets are refundable we would lose only the handling fee (around $200) but keep the face value and we must use it in next year. Does that mean if we cancel our trip for a covered reason. we might not get full cash refund of our air ticket? Mimi

Hi Mimi, this is a common question since there s so much mis-information about what part, if any, of an airline ticket is refundable.

Even though Expedia told you the tickets are refundable, the truth is they are non-refundable. Otherwise, why would they force you to pay a change fee instead of refunding your money? In reality, you will never get you your money back if you can t travel. If you choose to pay the approximately $200 handling fee, you can re-use your tickets within one year. The big drawback to paying the handling fee is if you cannot travel within the year because the tickets are non-transferable to someone else.

Compare this to one of our pre-screened travel insurance plans. which, if you cancel your trip for a covered reason. you are reimbursed you based on what you actually paid out of pocket for your tickets (assuming you insured the trip s prepaid non-refundable trip cost), not the just change fee.

Take a look at this article to help you decide which route to take: Cancel Your Plane Ticket Or Pay The Change Fee?

GetGoing: Cheap Flights for People Who are Willing to Take a Gamble

Every time an airplane takes off with even one unfilled seat, an airline is making less money than it could. Selling that seat to someone at some price even not very much would be better than leaving it empty. But an airline can t just start slashing fares willy-nilly; it doesn t want to give everyone  an aggressively good deal.

A new travel site called GetGoing thinks it s found a way to make both airlines and cheapskate consumers happy. The startup competes against well-established companies such as Priceline and Hotwire, which offer deep discounts to travelers who are willing to commit to paying for a flight or a room before they know which airline or hotel they re buying from.

But GetGoing doesn t just mask the airline; it also requires that you choose two different destinations, and commit to buying tickets before you know which one you ll get. (You can choose any two you like as long as they re at least fifty miles apart.) The company then selects one destination and sells you your tickets which it says are marked down by up to 40 percent, beating even other sources of cut-rate fares.

Why the forced choice? Air carriers are willing to give deep discounts to vacationers, who might not fly at all if the price isn t right. But they d rather not offer the same deals to business travelers, who are usually spending their companies money and are therefore less price-sensitive. By requiring customers to be willing to choose two potential destinations, GetGoing weeds out the corporate crowd.

Of course, it also weeds out plenty of vacationers, including anyone who s unwilling to commit to pay for a trip without knowing the destination. But GetGoing CEO Alek Vernitsky told me that there s a class of cost-conscious consumer who will find the proposition appealing, especially when multiple people are traveling at once. And for some of them, the surprise factor is fun or even helpful, such as when a couple can t agree on where to go.

I wondered if GetGoing uses some fancy algorithm to match up travelers and seats in the most efficient way possible. Turns out that it s basically flipping a coin: after you ve picked two destinations and proceeded with the transaction, it chooses one at random. I was also curious if the company s business model only worked for last-minute flights, when airlines are desperate to fill seats. But Vernitsky told me that the airlines pretty much know how full flights will be, and are therefore happy to offer discounts even months in advance.

GetGoing s site is slick and engaging, but I m not part of its super-price-sensitive target audience; I don t even like the idea of not knowing which airline I m going to be flying, let alone where I ll be heading. Then again, my wife and I have been debating destinations for our long-planned, much-delayed honeymoon for more than two years now, and haven t managed to settle on one so you never know.

How to Find Cheap Flights When Your Flight Dates are Flexible

Editor s note: We updated this popular post as of Sept. 29, 2014 and loaded it with fresh information and useful tips. One thing hasn t changed, though it ll still help you find the cheapest airfare deals available.

Flexibility is a wonderful thing especially when it comes to travel. The more flexible you can be, the more you ll save. [Check out the video below]

See the latest airline sales on the Deals Blog

How to Travel to Cuba If You Are an American

By Robert Curley. Caribbean Travel Expert

Islands have always been a part of my life: I was born on Long Island, and moved from there to Rhode Island — my current home, centered on the richness of Narragansett Bay — as a young adult. But I never had a true appreciation of island life until I visited the Caribbean. For me, that s the best part of being a travel writer — learning about local culture and history, meeting the real people that give a place its vitality and character.

Speaking of vital characters, the others in my personal story include my wife, Christine, son, Christopher, and daughter, Shannon. I m proud to say that we re a family of readers, writers, and explorers, and I look forward to sharing some of our past and future journeys with you. Read more

All Americans can now travel legally to Cuba — with some limitations.

You ll need to travel with a Cuba travel organization that has an official license from the U.S. State Department, like Insight Cuba  and Central Holidays .

And, while your tour may include stops at museums, historic sites, or even the Bay of Pigs or a local Communist Party block meeting, purely recreational activities — like visiting the beach or scuba diving — are prohibited from tour itineraries, which are limited to experiences that brings American and Cuban people together.

Schedules are typically packed with activities in order to comply with the State Department’s mandate and federal law, so it remains to be seen whether in practice travelers are able to slip away in their limited free time to visit Cuba s attractions on their own, take a dip in the Caribbean, or sample the local mojitos .

Insight Cuba, for example, is offering several options for Cuba travel, including a long weekend in Havana and seven-night trips that see more of the country. Tour prices include all lodging, activities, in-country transportation and meals, but not the cost of the necessary charter flight from Miami to Havana.

Other Ways to Travel to Cuba

Until and if the remaining aspects of the Cuba travel restrictions are lifted by the U.S. government, tours like these will be the only legal way for most Americans to visit the Caribbean island nation.

Of course, these restrictions don t apply to travelers from elsewhere in the world, and Cuba is among the most popular Caribbean destinations for travelers from Canada and Europe. A number of international hotel companies, such as Riu. Iberostar. and Melia. have built large resorts in Cuban destinations like Varadero that meet the expectations of savvy global travelers. More than 2 million tourists now visit Cuba annually.

Some Americans do travel illegally to Cuba. The Cuban government welcomes Americans to visit with a passport, but while Cuban customs and immigration officials once would agree not to stamp the passports of Americans entering the country, that is no longer the case. The most common way that Americans circumvent the Cuba travel ban is to fly to a third country that has regularly scheduled flights to Cuba, such as Canada. Mexico (Cancun is nearby and a popular Cuba gateway), or the Bahamas (Nassau). You can get a Cuban tourist card at airports in these countries, good for up to 30 days visiting Cuba.

Several companies located in Canada and elsewhere operate specifically to help Americans who want to travel independently to Cuba to book hotels and make other travel arrangements. Examples include USA Cuba Travel and CubaLinda .

    Keep in mind, however:

    • If you are caught traveling illegally to Cuba (such as by a Customs agent spotting a Cuba entry or exit stamp in your passport), you could face hefty fines and an uncomfortable experience clearing U.S. customs.
    • Credit and debit cards issued by U.S. banks will not work in Cuba. That requires U.S. visitors to carry cash or travelers’ checks with them, which can be risky. Once in Cuba, dollars must be exchanged for special convertible Cuban pesos, a parallel currency to normal pesos that will make your visit extra expensive.
    • Cuba is ruled by an authoritarian, sometimes paranoid government. Many of the rights you are used to as a U.S. citizen don’t exist in Cuba.

Note: The U.S. Embassy in Havana reopened in August 2015, as full diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States have been restored. The embassy can help travelers to Cuba with:

    • applications for new U.S. passports or replacing stolen U.S. passports
    • renewing expired U.S. passports
    • registering U.S. citizens living in, traveling to, or born in Cuba
    • assisting U.S. citizens with voter registration and voting
    • providing federal income tax forms
    • providing services to notarize documents to be used in the United States
    • providing limited assistance to U.S. citizen prisoners in Cuba
    • assisting in the shipment of remains of deceased U.S. citizens to the United States
    • assisting with money wires to U.S. citizens in cases of emergency
    • helping coordinate medical evacuations
