Cell biology has an ever-growing cast of molecules that regulate how cells perform. In many cases, proteins bind to other proteins to change their trajectory and alter cellular function. These binding interactions are incredibly important to understand. In particular, researchers are trying to figure out why changes in the interactions of proteins can cause cancer.

Recently, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was co-senior author on a paper, published in the journal PNAS. that describes how the protein DPF2 regulates blood production. DPF2 helps determine whether blood cells stay immature or mature into various cell types. High levels of DPF2 are seen in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia ( AML ), an aggressive type of blood cancer.

New patient-centered guidelines for the use of PCSK9 inhibitors to reduce cholesterol have been issued by a panel of experts from the National Lipid Association (NLA) chaired by Carl E. J. William Harbour, M.D. associate director for basic research at Sylvester, and the Mark J. Daily Chair and vice chairman for translational research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to study predictive testing of ocular (or uveal) melanoma, one of the deadliest types of cancer.

The Basics

What you ll do: Working closely with patients, you are responsible for basic care services such as bathing, grooming and feeding patients, assisting nurses with medical equipment, and checking patient vital signs. CNAs give patients important social and emotional support and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses.

Who Are Certified Nursing Assistants?

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) job puts you on the front lines of patient care. Nursing assistants are vital to daily operations in hospitals and nursing care facilities. Your compassion and skill in patient care will help minimize the stress of those who are sick or unable to care for themselves.

Certified nursing assistants, sometimes called nurses aides, orderlies, patient care technicians, and home health aides, work under the supervision of a nurse to help patients with daily living tasks.

Role of a CNA

The role of a CNA is to assist patients with everyday tasks such as eating, bathing and dressing. Many CNAs develop close bonds with their patients because they spend a significant amount of time together.

As a CNA, you ll rarely have two days that are completely alike. Your responsibilities will depend on the time of your shift and the type of facility you work in. For example, if you work a night shift in a hospital, you ll get an update from the day shift RN when you arrive at work. You ll take vital signs and ensure patients have what they need for the night. Your nights won t necessarily be quiet, however. You ll answer call lights, empty catheters, help patients who may be going in for surgery and provide general support to patients who are upset or uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, the role of CNA during a day shift will include preparing patients for the day ahead; washing, dressing and feeding breakfast will be some of the first tasks of the morning. As a CNA, you ll need to be organized and efficient since you ll often be managing multiple patients at once. For instance, as breakfast is going on, you may be called to change bedsheets.

CNAs not only offer support to their patients, but they help RNs as well. You ll maintain charts and provide reports to the incoming shift. Nurses may also ask you to round up certain medical supplies, admit new patients or prepare a room.

CNAs perform many of the same tasks in a nursing home, but there are a few differences. In a hospital, patients will have meals brought to them whereas nursing home patients may need assistance to the dining room. You ll answer call lights throughout the day or night and help patients get comfortable in their room or move about the facility. Depending on the nursing home, you may be assigned to a certain hall or area.

Similar Health Care Roles

Not all states use certified nursing assistant as a job title. Depending on your location, you may be called nursing assistant or nursing aide.

CNA roles are entry-level and while some of their tasks are similar to those of medical assistants or orderlies, you ll have more responsibility in this job. CNAs provide medical treatment to patients whereas orderlies are not permitted to do so. Instead, they clean equipment and rooms and transport patients. A medical assistant, like a CNA, has more interaction with patients, such as taking vital signs. However, their role includes more clerical and administrative work, such as booking appointments and collecting a patient s personal information.

Because of the regular interaction with patients and other medical staff, CNAs need to be dependable, cooperative and able to cope with stressful situations on a regular basis.

CNA Pay and Benefits

CNA pay and benefits will depend on where you work, but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2016-17 Occupational Outlook Handbook lists the annual median salary for CNAs as $25,090.

It s important to note that many CNAs are paid on an hourly basis so you may have an opportunity to pick up more hours to fill in for other CNAs who are using sick or vacation time.

Your geographic location is also a factor in how much you can make as a certified nursing assistant. Some larger cities pay more than their smaller and less expensive counterparts.

Although CNA pay and benefits may not be robust, there are plenty of benefits to becoming a certified nursing assistant. Not only will you get the fulfillment of knowing you re helping others feel better, but it can also be a solid stepping stone in your nursing career. If you decide to head back to school to become an RN, some programs will give you credit for CNA work experience.

How Do I Become a CNA?

If you re striving to become a CNA, there s good news. The BLS predicts faster than average job growth through 2024. Specifically, employment is supposed to increase by 17 percent. The national average is 7 percent.

To become a CNA, you ll need a high school diploma or GED, plus nursing assistant training. You can find these programs at community colleges, trade schools and medical facilities. Before enrolling, be sure the program is approved by your state s nursing board.

Once you ve completed your coursework, you ll need to take a state exam. You ll be tested on your basic nursing knowledge and skills. Aspiring CNAs will be expected to correctly answer questions about daily living activities, patient/client rights, communication, legal and ethical behavior and working as a health care team member, among other topics.

If you re concerned about the content of a CNA exam, you can find study preparation materials online. Here are a few sample questions:

  • How should a nursing assistant obtain the most accurate weight of a patient?
  • Who can you share a patient s personal information with?
  • What are the best ways to show a patient you are listening?

Education Certification

You can complete your certified nursing assistant program in a very short period of time. In addition to a high school diploma or GED, you ll need to complete a 6-to-12 week CNA certificate program at a community college or medical facility.

Classroom instruction in a certified nursing assistant program generally includes the following:

  • Basic nursing skills
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Nutrition
  • Infection control

Students also gain plenty of hands-on-experience during clinical activities.

Regulations on nursing assistant certification vary from state-to-state. However, most CNA programs offer a certification exam. The National Association for Home Care offers national certification for home health aides.

It s not uncommon for CNAs to advance their career by going back to school. If you want to become a registered nurse, you can earn an associate s or bachelor s degree. The former takes about two years to complete, but there are CNA-to-RN bridge programs available. This allows nursing students to complete their schooling in less than two years. Just keep in mind that an RN, BSN tends to open more doors for an advancement and opportunity in a nursing career.

CNA Licensure

To earn CNA licensure, you ll need to pass a state-issued competency exam. You ll complete a multiple choice portion of the test and in most cases, you ll need to demonstrate certain skills in a clinical setting.

In order to keep your CNA licensure active, most states require that CNAs complete 48 hours of continuing education every two years. Your state board can provide you with the most up-to-date information on licensing requirements.

When your license is up for renewal, check with your employer about continuing education subsidization. Many places will cover the cost of classes for their employees.

Distinguished Auckland dentist, Dr Heidi Sauer performs cosmetic and general dentistry, orthodontics, implant restoration and TMJ treatment at our practice.

Dr Sauer graduated with first class honours from the University of Queensland (Australia) Dental School in 1996. Since then she has travelled extensively throughout Australasia, the USA and Europe to train with the world’s leaders in cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and TMJ treatment. Much of her early training was at the world-renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. where she was the first Australasian dentist to complete several training programs.

Dr Sauer established Dental Artistry in Australia in 1999. The practice quickly developed an enviable reputation for outstanding cosmetic dentistry Australia-wide and soon began welcoming patients from all over Australia and overseas. Dental Artistry became the most successful cosmetic dental practice in Australia. Dr Worthington performs implant surgery at our practice.

Dr Worthington is a third generation dentist who was brought up around dentistry. He graduated from Otago University Dental School in 1982 and rapidly developed an interest in dental implant surgery. Since then he has travelled extensively throughout the USA and Europe to study from leaders in the field, and in doing so, has become an authority himself.

Dr Worthington limited his practice to dental implants in the year 2000 and he now performs more dental implant surgery than any other dentist in New Zealand. He also lectures on implant dentistry in New Zealand and overseas on a regular basis. He is an honorary lecturer for the Otago University School of Dentistry, The New Zealand Dental Association and the New Zealand Defence Force. He is regularly called upon to lecture to, mentor and give advice on implant dentistry to other dentists and dental students alike. Dental students from as far away as the UK travel to observe Dr Worthington perform dental implant surgery.

Dr Worthington is also a senior dental officer in the NZ Defence Force where he provides implant care and oral surgical services to the Defence Force personnel of NZ’s North Island.

Professional Associations and Memberships

Dr Worthington is a registered specialist implant provider to the ACC and was instrumental in developing national ACC guidelines for the provision of dental implant care. He is in the fellowship program of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and is also a member of the New Zealand Dental Association.

Dr Worthington loves getting outdoors, especially to fly fish and ski. He enjoys film, art and travelling. Students learn food preparation, knife safety and techniques, food safety and sanitation, opening and closing a commercial kitchen, gourmet pizza making, soups, salads, catering, garnishing and presentation, how to sauté and grill. Career opportunities that are available include restaurants, hotels, schools, and catering.

Laborers Construction Fundamentals Training Program
Students are trained in HAZWOPER (hazardous waste removal, asbestos removal, and lead removal), OSHA, confined space, blueprint reading, traffic control and use of basic building materials. Career opportunities include: laborer occupations, environmental health and safety firms, lead and asbestos abatement companies, material handling opportunities.

Medical Assistant
Students learn medical terminology, billing, and coding; learn how to take patients’ vital signs; receive CPR certification; learn front desk duties including insurance billing. Graduates are prepared for certification and are qualified for work in doctor, dentist, and optometrist offices as well as medical clinics and facilities.

Professional Health Care Worker

Project Build Green Technology Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship
The course offers an introduction to construction and environmental training. Students will gain a strong foundation in construction, green building, and forklift instruction. Graduates begin careers as carpenters, ironworkers, electricians, plumbers, drywall workers, and other apprenticeships and laborers occupations.

Web Technology Skills
Intended for students with good communication skills and experience working in an office, customer service, or sales environment, this course teaches students the web technology skills they need to prepare for “hybrid” roles in growing demand across Silicon Valley. Through guided lessons, hands-on projects, and self-paced online programs, students will emerge from the 16-week course with skills in HTML, CSS, email newsletters, WordPress, SalesForce administration, and more, as well as the ability to pick up new technologies with ease.

ARC-PA Accreditation Status

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Continued status to the Eastern Virginia Medical School Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Eastern Virginia Medical School. Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation status granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards .

Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the Standards. The approximate date for the next validation review of the program by the ARC-PA will be March 2026. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the Accreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy

Master of Physician Assistant Program

The Master of Physician Assistant (MPA) Program is an accredited 28-month program that provides graduates the skills and resources to deliver health care as physician assistant leaders in an evolving health-care industry.

Graduates of the MPA Program are eligible to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam (PANCE). Upon successful completion of the PANCE, physician assistants may use the PA-C designation, pursue state licensure and practice medicine with a supervising physician.

    Hospice offers medical care toward a different goal: Maintaining or improving the quality of life for someone whose illness, disease or condition is unlikely to be cured. Each patient’s individualized care plan is updated as needed to address the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies terminal illness. Hospice care also offers practical support for the caregiver(s) during the illness and grief support after the death. Hospice is something more that is available to the patient and the entire family when curative measures have been exhausted and life prognosis is 6 months or less.

    ​History of Hospice

    In Western society, the concept of hospice has been evolving in Europe since the 11th century. Hospice were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded or dying, as well as those for travelers and pilgrims. The modern concept of hospice, includes palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes. but also care provided to those who would rather spend their last months and days of life in their own homes.

    It began to emerge in the 17th century, but many of the foundational principles by which modern hospice services operate were pioneered in the 1950s by Dame Cicely Saunders. when she opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in 1967. St. Christopher’s Hospice in London emphasized the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for the dying, the regular use of opioids to control physical pain and careful attention to social, spiritual and psychological suffering in patients and families.

    Within the United States. the term is largely defined by the practices of the Medicare system and other health insurance providers, which make hospice care available, either in an inpatient facility or at the patient’s home, to patients with a terminal prognosis who are medically certified at hospice onset to have less than six months to live.

    Hospice care also involves assistance for patients’ families to help them cope with what is happening and provide care and support to keep the patient at home.

    In 1969, Elisabeth wrote On Death and Dying. coining the 5 stages of death: Shock/Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.

    If you are considering an advanced degree in healthcare, you may want to know the difference between the nurse practitioner and physician assistant occupations. The truth is these two careers are similar in some ways as well as different in others. Most importantly, the both provide career alternatives to professionals who want to work in advanced healthcare but do not want to make the commitment that is needed to become a physician.

    On a very basic level, it is important to know that a nurse practitioner (NP) attends a nursing school while a physician assistant (PA) attends a medical school or center of medicine. Because of this, the philosophies that graduates come out of school with are slightly different. Nurses follow a patient-centered model. in which they focus on disease prevention and health education as well as handle assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Physician assistants follow a disease-centered model. in which they focus on the biologic and pathologic components of health as well as are involved in assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Another difference to consider when looking at a nurse practitioner vs physicians assistant career is the areas of specialization that are available. NPs can work in many different and diverse areas, such as geriatrics, mental health, pediatrics and women s health. PAs have more of a generalized education, but can also specialize in areas that may include emergency medicine, orthopedics and general surgery. When thinking about the physician assistant vs nurse practitioner careers, keep in mind the different health care philosophies, educational options and specialty areas available to determine what best might fit for you.

    Side-by-Side Comparison

    There are many points to consider when looking at these two occupations. Below is a side-by-side comparison detailing more about nurse practitioner and physician assistant job preparation and training, on-the-job frameworks, and pay and career outlook. It s important to have a robust understanding of a career before beginning any educational program. While reading, do keep in mind that both NPs and PAs will play important roles in health care in the future. This is because the U.S. could see a shortage of 90,000 physicians by 2022 and 130,000 physicians by 2025, reports the American Association of Medical Colleges. Because of this, both NPs and PAs will be needed to step in and help fill vital health care roles.

    Currently, NPs need a minimum of a master s degree from an accredited school to become licensed within a state. Even though the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has recommended that the new NP standard be the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) by 2015. states still just require a master s or graduate degree.

    PA s need a minimum of a master s degree from an accredited medical school or center of medicine to seek licensure.

    A NP can seek a master s or DNP from a nursing school, although the DNP is suggested by the AACN. In the U.S. there are 92 DNP programs available for nurse practitioners.

    170 physician assistant programs, most of which were master s degrees, were available in 2012, according to the BLS .

    NPs typically choose a specialty area and need to complete 500 didactic hours and between 500 to 700 clinical hours.

    PAs are trained as generalists and typically need to complete about 1,000 didactic hours and more than 2,000 clinical hours.

    NP programs typically will be accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN ).     Certification and Licensing

    PAs need to pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) available through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

    A RN license, a master s or graduate degree and national certification are generally needed to seek state licensure.

    A master s degree from an accredited school and national certification are generally needed to seek state licensure.

    NPs seek licensure through a state board of nursing or board of medical examiners. The AACN provides links to the licensing agencies with information available here .

    PA seeks licensure through a state medical board, board of medical examiners or similar. A list of state licensing agencies available through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) can be found here .

    NPs must be re-certified every five years. They may sit for the appropriate exam or complete a minimum 1,000 hours of clinical practice and 75 to 150 continuing education units in their NP specialty.

    PAs need 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) hours every two years and an exam every six years .

    Details about the Job

    NPs generally work with physician oversight. However, currently 250 practices in the U.S. are operated solely by NPs, and legislation is being pushed to expand the number of states that allow NPs to work autonomously from 16 to 30, according to The Washington Post .

    PA cannot work independently of physicians.
