Inside Australia’s most haunted city

FROM the hotel haunted by a former prime minister to weird reportings around the Parliamentary Triangle, something strange is happening in the nation’s capital.

How Australia is selling death to tourists

TOURIST attractions in Australia have taken a morbid turn. Cemeteries are the new, hot place to visit — and people can’t get enough.

Summer of cricket just got so much better

ARE you glued to the telly during the cricket season? Well, has Qantas got some good news for you.

Jacaranda-seeking tourists running into trouble

SELFIE-LOVING tourists are flocking to see a jacaranda tree tunnel in Sydney and it’s creating local headaches.

City’s embarrassment to be destroyed

A TOWER dubbed “lewd”, “unfortunate” and an “embarrassment” is to be torn down. But a backlash has begun in a bid to save “the big penis”.

northern territory

The souvenir that could haunt you

IT’S a souvenir from an iconic Aussie spot that’s irresistible to tourists. But now hundreds of visitors to Uluru are desperate to send their mementos back.

You’ve never seen the Outback like this

FOR the first time, drones have been allowed to fly over Kakadu National Park and record footage of one of Australia’s most spectacular wonders. Here’s your first look.

‘There’s no question my family is now closer’

CRICKET star Matthew Hayden, his wife and three kids have been on an epic adventure through the Northern Territory. This is how they did it — with no gadgets.

This place is not a myth

ONE in 10 Australians believe this spot to be a mythical destination from a children’s book. But it’s real and will blow you away.

queensland

Gold Coast grows up just in time

THE Gold Coast is best known for its rowdy Schoolies celebrations and colourful characters, but it’s growing up just in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Long-haul coup for Brisbane Airport

QANTAS has announced a major coup for Brisbane that will generate jobs and position the city as a gateway to North America.

50 years of our favourite holiday spot

IT IS one of Australia’s best holiday destinations, so it’s hard to believe just 50 years ago the Sunshine Coast technically didn’t exist.

This place changed my mind about camping

FORGET everything you know about uncomfortable sleeps, canned food and days without showering, this is the most glamorous camping spot in Australia.

south australia

Proof we’ve been underrating this place

Forget Sydney and Melbourne. This amazing region is home to the only two Australian places included in a prestigious global list.

Bare your arts at nude hotel

GUESTS can shed their robes — and their inhibitions — to pose nude or semi-naked for an artist’s portrait as part of a new hotel package.

Is this Australia’s most underrated city?

IT’S often sneered at and mocked, but Adelaide could just be the best place to live in Australia. Well, according to this comedian it is.

Australia’s most underrated city

WE’RE a bit sick of weekend getaways to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, to be honest. Here’s something different.

tasmania

Australia’s most beautiful road trip

IT’S easy to see why these glacier-sculpted mountain peaks and misty alpine moorlands have become a pilgrimage for bushwalkers from all over the globe.

What I learnt after living off the grid

NO PHONES, no showers — not even a mirror. Three weeks in these conditions could have been a disaster, but there was something simple I discovered.

Amazing new hotel coming to Hobart

THE new addition is unlike anything that has gone before. No surprise given the guy behind it.

The best island Australians don’t visit

IT’S got great beaches and good food — I even met my partner here. So why do so few Australians visit, asks Johanna Leggatt.

victoria

This has to be Australia’s ‘richest’ spot

THIS area once produced most of the world’s gold. But the Victorian Goldfields, about an hour from Melbourne, is still as impressive as ever — and it offers a lot of other gems, too.

There’s nothing better than camping with a dog

THESE are the best Aussie spots to go on a camping adventure with your pooch — and what you should do to make sure it’s the best trip possible.

Hostie shames ‘irresponsible’ mum

FOR this mum, flying for the first time with a new baby was nerve-racking enough. But the cruel comments of a flight attendant made the experience unbearable.

What happened to ‘craft’ beer festival?

CRAFT beer isn’t what it used to be, with some of Australia’s biggest companies making the stuff now. But the GABS beer festival is still worth a look.

western australia

Is Aussie bucket list destination worth it?

THIS Aussie resort attracts tens of thousands of visitors a year. But does it really live up to the hype?

Strange things that actually exist in WA

IT HAS a city of gnomes, rivers that are pink, and another nation sitting inside its borders. Western Australia, you weird and wonderful thing.

WA town’s bizarre claim to fame

TOURISM experts have raised eyebrows at the tourist town of Exmouth after a local suggested this as the reason why people should visit.

Dave Hughes: ‘I drove for 44 hours straight’

THE Aussie comedian has revealed his most epic road trip — and what was waiting for him at the other end.

The Real Australian Outback – An Outback Australia Travel Guide, travel

The Outback Australia Travel Guide

A Guide To The Real Australian Outback

This Australian Outback travel guide is written by a real person, who has a very real life here out back.

That’s why the guide covers a lot more than the usual tourist attractions in Outback Australia. (Of course I cover those as well.)

The Australia Travel Guide contains everything I’ve discovered and learned over the years, living and travelling in the Outback of Australia:

  • You will see that the Australian Outback is not all desert (with one big rock and a few kangaroos. ), far from it. And it’s not as dangerous as they make you believe.
  • Learn about our snakes, discover the myths about our spiders, and find out how to stay alive amongst our crocodiles.
  • Learn about the issues surrounding the Ayers Rock climb, how to avoid the tourist crowds in Kakadu, hike through Kings Canyon and explore Katherine Gorge in a canoe.
  • Find a cheap flight and some jet lag remedies, a cheap hotel or a free camp site, and if you are young and adventurous, I can even show you the easiest way to get a Working Holiday Visa for Australia AND to find a job.
  • And that’s just a start. Whether you are dreaming about or planning a trip to Outback Australia, you will find some real help here and where needed the inspiration to finally make your dreams come true!

Seventeen Years In The Australian Outback

The Australian Outback has been my home for over seventeen years. I get seriously homesick every time I try to leave. Homesick although I’m not originally from Australia.

I arrived here as an Australia traveller myself, backpacking up and down, around and across the continent, usually on my own (though I hadn’t planned it that way. )

I created the Outback Australia Travel Guide to show you why, and to help you with the preparation for your own trip.

The Australian Outback is more beautiful than you ever imagined, to travel here gives you a sense of space and freedom you never thought possible, and it is nowhere near as dangerous as they try to make you believe.

All you need is enough information, and a reasonable measure of common sense. I like to think that I can offer you plenty of both, so lets get started.

How to find your way around

the Australian Outback (Guide)

This website has several main areas:

  • The Travel In Australia section tells you about the different ways to get here and to get around Australia. From cheap Australia flights to preventing jet lag, from the Ghan train to outback driving tips to hitchhiking, it’s covered here.
  • Under Visas for Australia you find information regarding the different visa classes, where and how to get them, what you can and can’t do with a visitor visa or a work visa for Australia etc.
  • The section about Work and Travel in Australia has more information about the working holiday visa and about finding work in Australia. (Even how to get a lucrative job in mining.)
  • Then there is an area that has background information about the Australian Outback as well as travel information, specifically for outback travellers.
  • And last but not least there is the real heart of the site: hundreds of pages that cover different destinations in the Australian Outback (outback towns, Australian tourist attractions, Australian national parks).

Now, I realise that this is all a bit overwhelming, and that’s why I have created a FREE Outback Travel Guidebook to get you started. It tells you everything you need to know to plan a trip in the Australian Outback. You can get access to it by subscribing to this site (for free of course) through the box below.

It’s my thank you for your interest in my site and in the beautiful part of the world that I live in.

If you like this website and guide, help others to find out about it. If you have a blog or website, or know someone who does, please consider linking to me. Share the link on Facebook, Tweet it. you get the idea. Every link helps!

You can also let others know about this site by bookmarking it at your favourite social bookmarking engine:

  • Kimberley Australia Travel Guide – Western Australia s Kimberleys From Broome

    Australia travel

    The Western Australia Kimberley Region

A Travel Guide To Australia’s Last True Wilderness

This Kimberley Travel Guide takes you through one of the remotest, wildest and most beautiful regions on earth.

For me the Kimberleys in Western Australia were love at first sight, and a good enough reason to move here permanently.

That’s right, the Kimberly Australia Travel Guide is written and maintained by a resident of the region, not by some tourism business.

That’s why it covers a lot more than the usual tourist attractions.

This Kimberley Travel Guide is an inside look at the Kimberley. It’s like a trip with a local.

The guide contains practical advice for people planning a trip, detailed descriptions of popular drives, of national parks and hikes. It tells you about all the gorges and waterfalls and beaches, including and especially the ones that you won’t find mentioned elsewhere.

    So come on a drive.

    • . from Broome to Kununurra on the Great Northern Highway, visiting the Bungle Bungles, Wolfe Creek, Tunnel Creek and more national parks.
    • . from Wyndham to Derby along the infamous Gibb River Road, a Kimberley adventure tour right through the heart of the region.
    • . to my favourite waterfalls (and let me know which is your favourite).
    • . and one of the world’s top 5 beaches.

Mind you, I prefer this one any day and there are even better ones. I will take you to waterfalls and beach hideaways, rock pools and fishing spots, all the secret places that we don’t usually tell the tourists about!

You can read about the weather and the seasons, the flora and the wildlife, the culture and the geology.

. about must-haves, must-dos, and must-nots, all you need to know to enjoy this adventure of a lifetime.

The natural beauty of this region will take your breath away. It is hard to put into words, which is why you will find so many pictures on this site.

Now, this website has several hundred pages and in the beginning it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why I have also created a FREE Kimberley Travel Guidebook to get you started. It tells you everything you need to know to plan a trip across the Kimberley. You can get access to it by subscribing to this site (for free of course) through the box below.

It’s my thank you for your interest in my site and in the beautiful part of the world that I live in.

If you like this website and guide, help others to find out about it. If you have a blog or website or know someone who does, please consider linking to me. Add a link to your Facebook Wall, your Myspace, Tweet it. you get the idea. Every link helps!

The advice and the stories you find on this site are for real. It’s a Travel Guide written and maintained by someone who lives here. I arrived in the Kimberley in 1994 as an overseas traveller myself, fell hopelessly in love with the region, and stayed.

. and I would love to show you why!

Welcome to “my backyard” and enjoy your stay!

I hope you will love it here as much as I do.

Sure, the Kimberley in Western Australia is remote. How remote? Here are all the facts and numbers.

A guide to all the maps of Western Australia available on this site. Many are free, some are printable, and some.

Over the last years the Gibb River Road has become very popular with Kimberley travellers, and as a result it has changed a lot.

It’s not just the Mitchell Falls that make the Mitchell Plateau special, there is so much to discover and do here. This is one of my favourite places in the Kimberlies.

This Bungle Bungles guide makes sure you get the most out of your visit to Purnululu National Park.

Cape Leveque near Broome is both: affordable wilderness camp and luxury resort. And it has the best beaches in Australia. Just make sure you pick the right time.

Does Broome in Western Australia live up to the promises of the travel industry? The opinions on Broome are divided.

In the local Aboriginal language Kununurra means Meeting Of The Big Waters. An appropriate name indeed, as water is the most noticeable feature of this region.

I and all future readers would love to see your Kimberley trip reports, your photos and videos, hear about your adventures and your opinions.

Travel information and pictures of all Kimberley national parks: I chose my top three, which are your favourites?

The photos are grouped by location or theme, and come with explanations and links to more information about the area.

Don’t worry if you don’t know all that much about Barramundi fishing. I’ll tell you where to find the Barra, and how to hook them, right here.

Travel Australia, the best ideas for travel in Australia, student travel

    Travel Australia – Getting Around

To travel Australia – all of Australia – would take many months. The major attractions for Australia travellers are hundreds, if not thousands of kilometres apart.

Most people want to travel to the Australian Outback and the reef and see some of the cities on the coast.

And then there are the amazing beaches, the rainforest, the wildlife, Ayers Rock, Kakadu.

Just have a look at the video below and you will agree, you can’t miss any of it.

To travel Australia means you have to cover some ground. This page tells you how to best go about it.

    Travel Australia Video

This is an awesome country with an amazing variety of attractions, and you’d like to see as much as possible, right? But remember you are on holidays, and you don’t want your holidays to become stressful and hectic as you race from one location to the next.

    Some planning is in order.

I will look at the different possibilities youВ have for travel in Australia and the Australian Outback, and at some decisions you have to make:

Travel Australia – Flying or Driving

The first thing you need to decide is, do you want to fly or drive? I can’t emphasize this enough – travel in Australia means huge distances.

If your time is limited it is a good idea to pick two or three locations to visit within Australia, and fly between them.

The Australian airline Qantas has partnered with many international airlines. No matter which airline you prefer, you should be able to book a flight package to Australia with them that includes one or more domestic flights.

If you have a little more time – and I hope you do – then you might prefer to stay on the ground.

You will find detailed information for particular drives in the relevant regional sections of this guide. The big interstate or transcontinental drives are a great experience. But as I said, you really have to have the time.

But people on a tight schedule need not miss out. The best way to travel Australia in the course of several weeks is to combine one or two inland flights with one or two trips in a rental car.

For example if you arrive in Sydney you could fly to Ayers Rock and fly to Darwin from there. Drive a rental car from Darwin through Kakadu, Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park and back.

Or drive all the way across the magnificent Kimberley, and finish your trip on the pristine beaches of tropical Broome.

Or drive from Ayers Rock to Darwin, then fly to the Great Barrier Reef. Or any other combination.

Car rental is available everywhere, and the big companies all have one way hire deals. You can rent a small car to explore the city and the outskirts on your own terms and schedule, or a 4×4 to head for the Australian Outback.

The top choice for travel around the Australian Outback would have to be four wheel drive campervan hire. No need to worry about or pay for accommodation. Pick up your car in Sydney, and drop it off in Broome, at the opposite end of the continent. 6 weeks later. Sounds too expensive? Read on.

When I first came to Australia I was a student on a break from uni, so I had plenty of time. Read how I travelled around Australia back then – the same way backpackers travel Australia today.

(And if you want to know more about how I ended up here, how I built this site, and how I make time for travel in my life today, read the page about me.)

    Travel Australia – Tours

If you don’t want to drive and plan all the details yourself you can join an organised tour. They come in all shapes and colours. Buses and groups of all sizes, trips of any length, focusing on depth of experience or on distance covered.

One interesting option for the Australian Outback are tagalong tours. You drive your own (or a rental) vehicle, following an experienced guide. No need to plan the route, to find out what’s worth seeing, what the road conditions are like etc. It removes a lot of questions and hassles. You will meet great people, see fantastic country, and you are not herded and carted around in a bus.

Most likely you will also gain enough knowledge and four wheel driving experience to be able to set out on your next trip by yourself. So if you’re adventurous, but a bit unsure about going it alone, tagalong tours are for you.

Another type of semi organised tour are the self-drive packages offered by several operators. You will beВ driving on your own, but you are supplied with all the necessary instructions, directions and maps, even the camping equipment, and your schedule is already worked out for you. It takes a lot of hassle out of the planning of such an adventure but leaves you with the highest possible amount of freedom. Self-drive tours would be my choice if I didn’t live here anyway.

Coach or Bus Travel in Australia

If you prefer to travel Australia independently and don’t want to or can’t afford to drive yourself, you can travel around Australia by coach. Greyhound services all of Australia. Yes, the Outback, too.

They have a selection of passes that include a certain number of kilometres or number of trips and more. You can look at your options and make bookings on their website. Coach travel is cheaper than flying, unfortunately you still won’t see much of the country.

    Train Travel in Australia

Australia also offers three really great train journeys. The latest addition is the Adelaide-Darwin trip on the Ghan. This amazing 2979km trip crosses the Australian continent from south to north and has received a lot of publicity since the track was finally completed in 2003.

The Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth covers even more distance. 4352km, including 478 km of straight railway tracks, the world’s longest straight track section.

The Overland was the pioneer, the first inter-capital railway track in Australia. The historic route between Melbourne and Adelaide was opened in 1887!

You can find out more about these trips and others, including time tables and fares, on the page Train Travel in Australia.

The Australian High Commission in Nairobi has become aware of several visa scams. Please be cautious of any person offering guaranteed Australian visas.

    Country Coverage

The Australian High Commission in Nairobi provides Visa and Immigration services to residents of Kenya and 21 other countries in east, central and west Africa. The Australian High Commission is also responsible for the Refugee and Humanitarian program for all sub-Saharan Africa.

For more information including how to contact us see: Immigration Services

Student visa applications are now processed by the Student hub at the Australian High Commission, Pretoria. See: African Student Hub

    Visa Application

As the Australian High Commission in Nairobi covers a large area for immigration services, there are several ways a visa application can be lodged. See: Making a Visa Application

    Applicants in Uganda biometric collection

From June 2016, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection has been collecting biometrics from clients applying for Australian visas in Uganda. All applicants, regardless of nationality, who are in Uganda at the time of making a visa application to enter Australia, will be required to provide their biometrics in person unless otherwise excluded or exempted from doing so under Australian Government policy.

Visa applicants in Uganda who mail their applications to the Australian High Commission in Kenya, will be sent a letter requiring them to attend the Australian Biometric Collection Centre (ABCC) in person to provide their biometrics. Applicants lodging their visas online may be sent a letter informing them that they need to attend the ABCC in person to provide their biometrics.

The ABCC will charge a service fee for the collection of biometrics. Please see the Service Delivery Partner (SDP) website below for more details.

The details of the ABCC in Uganda are as follows:

    Australian Biometrics Collection Centre

    Block A, Victoria Courts

    Old Kira Road, Bukoto

    Opening hours : 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday -Friday

To avoid unnecessary delays, you are encouraged to make an appointment to provide your biometrics. Appointments can be made through the:

Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) website: https://au.tlscontact.com/

    Call Centre: +27 (0) 21 401 7500 (international call rates apply)

    Visa Application Charges

    Citizenship Fees

    Processing Times

Processing time for individual applications will vary and is dependent on a number of factors, including the complexity of the case, the planning levels and priority for the visa category and the number of applications lodged. Every year the Australian Government sets the overall migration program as part of the Budget process. See: Nairobi Processing Times

Documents in support of a Visa Application

It is important to include information and documentation in support of your visa application. The document checklist provides you with advice on what you need to provide depending on your individual circumstances. See: Application Document Checklist

    Welcome to Help Exchange (HelpX)

HelpX is an online listing of host organic farms, non-organic farms, farmstays, homestays, ranches, lodges, B Bs, backpackers hostels and even sailing boats who invite volunteer helpers to stay with them short-term in exchange for food and accommodation.

HelpX is provided primarily as a cultural exchange for working holiday makers who would like the opportunity during their travels abroad, to stay with local people and gain practical experience. In the typical arrangement, the helper works an average of 4 hours per day and receives free accommodation and meals for their efforts.

This time range can vary considerably depending on the tasks at hand and the host’s preferences. Some hosts may require just 2 hours per day for accommodation only, and ask you to provide and cook your own food.

Others may expect 6 hours per day in return for meals, your own room and sometimes other benefits such as free Internet use, horse riding, kayaking, bikes, local sight-seeing trips, yoga or English lessons, etc. Some will give weekends off, while others might allow you to put in 8 hours one day and later take a full day off. Helpers often live with the host family and are expected to join in and offer a helping hand with day-to-day activities.

Volunteer helpers are required to register for one of two levels of membership, Free or Premier. Helpers must upgrade to Premier membership to take full advantage of all HelpX has to offer. Premier membership costs 20 Euros for 2 years and allows the helper to contact all hosts and read all host reviews. Premier helpers can browse this site and contact hosts directly to see about making arrangements to stay.

Hosts wishing to add a free listing inviting helpers to stay will need to register. Registered hosts may update their details as often as they like and view helper profiles.

We advise both helpers and hosts to ask plenty of questions about each other in order to establish expectations from each party. Helpers should never turn up without prior arrangement. Basic host listings can still be browsed without registering by signing in as a ‘Guest’.

Helpers can also opt to provide a self description for hosts to view who may then wish to invite the helper to stay with them. We advise helpers to include in their profile any skills or experience they may have, such as gardening, farming, agriculture, permaculture, fruit-picking; trade skills such as building, carpentry, landscaping, sail boat crewing; working with animals or an ability to care for and ride horses. Helpers can also look for travel companions.

The Real Australian Outback – An Outback Australia Travel Guide, work

I hope I will make Outback Australia come alive in your imagination, and when you visit I hope you will love it as much as I do.

Kimberley Australia Travel Guide – Western Australia s Kimberleys From Broome

    Work and travel australia

    Your Kimberley Australia Travel Guide

How I ended up in the Kimberley (and made a website about the Kimberley).

The two printable Kimberley Guide e-books make research and planning a breeze.

The latest updates to the Kimberley Travel Guide.

All the information in the Kimberley Travel Guide at one glance.

    Australian Holidays

    Inside Australia’s most haunted city

FROM the hotel haunted by a former prime minister to weird reportings around the Parliamentary Triangle, something strange is happening in the nation’s capital.

How Australia is selling death to tourists

TOURIST attractions in Australia have taken a morbid turn. Cemeteries are the new, hot place to visit — and people can’t get enough.

Summer of cricket just got so much better

ARE you glued to the telly during the cricket season? Well, has Qantas got some good news for you.

    Jacaranda-seeking tourists running into trouble

SELFIE-LOVING tourists are flocking to see a jacaranda tree tunnel in Sydney and it’s creating local headaches.

    nsw act

Tips and advice on travel in Australia: The eight worst things

Tips and advice on travel in Australia: The eight worst things about travelling in Australia

There’s plenty to love about travelling in Australia, plenty that you can and should appreciate. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet, a place most people have to pay a lot of money for the privilege of coming to visit, and we get to experience it every day.

Travel in Australia can be amazing. To visit your own country is to discover ancient cultures, beautiful landscapes, some of the world’s best beaches, cosmopolitan cities and friendly people. It’s something everyone should do.

However, it’s not perfect. In some areas Australia lets itself down. Some of those factors are cultural, while others are just an unavoidable part of life here. If you’re going to travel in Australia and you’re going to enjoy yourself, these are the things that, right now, you just have to accept.

    The prices are high

This is the most common complaint from overseas visitors as well as domestic travellers: everything in Australia costs too much. The hotels, the tours, the attractions, the food, the experiences. Super pricey. Go to Spain and you can get a glass of wine for a few Euros. Go to Thailand and you can live like a king for a couple of bucks. But in Australia? You’d better get saving. We can’t match the prices of overseas destinations for a variety of reasons, and we probably never will.

You will now receive updates from Traveller Newsletter

By submitting your email you are agreeing to Fairfax Media’s terms and conditions and privacy policy.

    You have to fly

Plenty of travellers love to use trains when they’re travelling, whether it’s for short intercity hops in Europe, or longer multi-night adventures in Russia or Asia. In Australia, however, you wouldn’t travel by train. Unless you’re prepared to spend up big on a luxury adventure, there’s very little romance in train travel here. It’s just not a system of transport we really use to cover the huge distances you find in Australia. Travellers are far better off using the budget airline network and just getting to their destinations fast.

You have to give up somewhere else

This is another difficulty of travelling in Australia: to commit to a domestic holiday, you also have to effectively give up on an overseas journey. You’re making a choice here. If you elect to see Uluru, or Tasmania, or the Great Barrier Reef, or the Barossa, you have to accept that on this holiday you won’t be going to Vietnam, or Japan, or France, or India. For some people that’s a big thing to dismiss.

    The thrill isn’t the same

There’s no language barrier when you travel in Australia, unless you count the accents in country Queensland. There’s no challenge to navigating a restaurant menu here, or to ordering a drink, or to getting from one place to another. Everything in Australia is predictable, safe, and easy. And in some ways that’s great. For those who thrive on the dizzying confusion of foreign travel, however, that can be disappointing.

    Our history is intangible

    Travelling australia

Circular Quay and The Rocks, Sydney Photo: Alamy

Australia’s tangible history, its centuries-old buildings in places like the Rocks and Hobart, are fairly impressive – however, our past has a lot more to it than that. There have been human inhabitants in this country for possibly up to 80,000 years. The only thing is, however, that their history can’t be seen or touched. Ancient Aboriginal culture is not represented by churches or old monuments. It’s represented by stories and knowledge. That’s exciting and fascinating, but it does require viewing cultural tourism in a different way.

    Our snow is unpredictable

The Australian ski resorts are now coming to the end of what has been a cracker of a season; however, that’s not always that case. If you’re going to commit to a skiing or snowboarding holiday in Australia, you also have to accept that maybe the snow won’t be so good this time. Maybe it’ll be icy, maybe it’ll be slushy. Or, maybe it will be a powdery wonderland. You just never know.

    The service isn’t always great

Travel in the US, and you get great service. Every time. Same in Canada. Travel in Southeast Asia and you’ll probably be pretty well looked after too. Same goes for a lot of Europe. Australia, however, isn’t quite so reliable. We don’t have an ingrained service culture here, and travellers have to get used to the idea that they won’t always be cared for in the same way as they would in a foreign country.

    We’re different

    Travelling australia

    Longitude 131, Uluru.

I wrote a story a few weeks ago about Australian alternatives to popular overseas destinations, about the places you can go right here if you don’t want to travel overseas. And we do have some truly great alternatives to the world’s most famous attractions. However, they’re not quite the same, and in some areas we’ll never be able to compete. We’ll never have the wildlife of southern and east Africa, or the art galleries of the European capitals, or the cultural exoticism of Asia or the Middle East. Sometimes it’s best to just accept that, and concentrate on the attractions that make Australia unique.

Are there certain aspects of travel in Australia that we just have to accept? Or should things be different here?

    Visas and migration

    Travelling australia

If you have the skills, Australia has the lifestyle. If you like the idea of Australia\ s climate and lifestyle and are looking for a career challenge in a country with lots of opportunities take the next step and find out more about Australia s skilled working visas. Your journey starts when you submit an expression of interest for a skilled visa through SkillSelect. By using SkillSelect the Australian Government could invite you to lodge a visa application or you could be nominated by an Australian or state and territory government. Find out what you need to do to complete your expression of interest through SkillSelect.

Holiday Season Impacts on Visa Application Processing

Processing times are impacted by seasonal peaks. During the holiday season you can expect longer processing times as a result of the volume of applications received.

If you are applying for a visitor visa (subclass 600) and are planning to travel to Australia during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, we encourage you to submit your application no later than 15 November 2017. It is important that all relevant supporting documents are attached to your application at time of lodgement. Our preferred method for receiving applications is online. Please visit our website to create an online account and lodge a visa application.

If you are a US citizen and hold a valid US passport, you may be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). Please visit our website for more information and to lodge an application. Most ETAs are issued automatically.

Partner and Prospective Marriage Visa Online Lodgement Only

From 18 November 2017 applications for the following visas must be lodged online, via ImmiAccount:

    • Partner (subclass 309/100 and 820/801)
    • Prospective Marriage (subclass 300)

Paper appplications received after close of business (COB) local time on 17 November 2017 will not be valid and will be returned to the sender. Please visit our website for further information.

    Changes to skilled visa programmes

On 18 April 2017 the Government announced a number of reforms to Australia s temporary and permanent skilled visa programmes. Implementation of the reforms commenced on 19 April 2017 and will be completed by March 2018.

In addition to the reforms impacting the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) which have already been implemented on 19 April 2017, there are a number of further changes which will take effect on 1 July 2017.

These changes will specifically impact on the following temporary and permanent skilled migration programmes:

    • Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457)
    • Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)
    • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187)
    • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) including NZ pathway
    • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
    • Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489).

    Changes to temporary visas (subclasses 400, 401, 402 and 403) from 19 November 2016

From 19 November 2016 a number of temporary visas were closed to new applications and four new visa subclasses were introduced.

Further details about the new temporary activity visa framework are available at the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.

Changes to Member of the Family Unit definition from 19 November 2016

The definition of Member of the Family Unit (MoFU) has changed for applications made on and after 19 November 2016, where MoFU will now be limited to direct family members.

The change applies to permanent visa subclasses and some provisional and temporary visa subclasses. The change does not apply to refugee, humanitarian or protection visas.

Further details about the changes to MoFU arrangements are available at the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.

    Learn More About Australia Tours

Cosmopolitan cities, gorgeous beaches, the rugged Outback and fascinating Aboriginal culture can all be experienced on Australia tours. Because Australia is so distant from North America, most Australia vacations are two weeks long, with some itineraries lasting a month. It makes perfect sense, though, since there is so much to see in this vast country. Typically you will fly between cities, to cover as much ground as you can in a limited amount of time.

Australia tours usually make overnight visits to the area around Alice Springs, so visitors can get a taste of the Outback. While this is a remote region in the center of the country, there are farmers and ranchers who make their homes out here. Also, this is where you find Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. It is a sacred place for the Aboriginals, who were the first inhabitants of Australia.

Finally, Cairns is another important stop on any Australia vacation. That is because this northeast coastal town is the gateway to the awesome Great Barrier Reef. If you like to snorkel or scuba dive, you will want to don gear to admire the amazing array of marine life. Otherwise, you can board a glass-bottom boat to see the colorful fish. Other excursions here include a catamaran cruises or walks through the tropical rainforest.
