Learn More About Australia Tours

Cosmopolitan cities, gorgeous beaches, the rugged Outback and fascinating Aboriginal culture can all be experienced on Australia tours. Because Australia is so distant from North America, most Australia vacations are two weeks long, with some itineraries lasting a month. It makes perfect sense, though, since there is so much to see in this vast country. Typically you will fly between cities, to cover as much ground as you can in a limited amount of time.

Australia tours usually make overnight visits to the area around Alice Springs, so visitors can get a taste of the Outback. While this is a remote region in the center of the country, there are farmers and ranchers who make their homes out here. Also, this is where you find Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. It is a sacred place for the Aboriginals, who were the first inhabitants of Australia.

Finally, Cairns is another important stop on any Australia vacation. That is because this northeast coastal town is the gateway to the awesome Great Barrier Reef. If you like to snorkel or scuba dive, you will want to don gear to admire the amazing array of marine life. Otherwise, you can board a glass-bottom boat to see the colorful fish. Other excursions here include a catamaran cruises or walks through the tropical rainforest.

Suggested Itineraries

Australia s size and its distance from Northern Hemisphere destinations are the two most daunting things about planning a visit. A week or two in Australia is just enough time to scrape the surface of this vast, complex, and fascinating place. It s a long way to come for just a week, but if that s all you can spare, you still want to see as much as possible. While my inclination is to immerse myself in one spot, I know that not everyone can do that. Seeing as much as possible is often a priority, so here are some ideas on how to do just that.

If you re a first-time visitor, with only 1 or 2 weeks, you may find these two itineraries most helpful: Australia in 1 Week or Australia in 2 Weeks . These itineraries can be adapted to suit your needs; for example, you could substitute the Cairns section of Australia in 1 Week for the Uluru/Red Centre suggestions in Australia in 2 Weeks, flying from Sydney to Uluru.

If you re traveling as a family, the Australia for Families itinerary is designed to give you some ideas on keeping the young ones occupied (while still being interesting for parents!).

Getting around this continent, where major attractions are thousands of miles apart, can be daunting and time-consuming. Flying is the only way to cover long distances efficiently, but unfortunately it also can be expensive. Remember to build flying time into your itineraries, and don t try to pack in too much on the days you fly even domestic flights can be draining, some clocking in at around 3 hours.

My best advice: If the pace gets too hectic, just chill out and reorder your sightseeing priorities. Take time to meet the locals and ask their advice on what you should see as well.

Note. This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Meta

There are some truly amazing places in Australia and now we bring you the top 10 most amazing and scenic drives you’ll ever want to take.

1. Great Ocean Road, Torquay to Warrnambool (Vic) The Great Ocean Road sits at the top of the list of great Australian drives — and rightly so. It snakes past cliffs, roaring seas, tranquil coves and some of Australia s best surf beaches. Not to mention the rugged rainforest of the Otway Ranges, historic shipwrecks and an internationally recognised Australian landmark, the Twelve Apostles.

2. Savannah Way, Cairns to Broome (Qld, NT, WA) Dubbed Australia s great adventure drive , the Savannah Way stretches from Cairns in north Queensland to Broome in Western Australia, straight through the middle of the Top End. The route passes through some of Australia s most spectacular scenery, including five World Heritage areas, over 15 national parks, the world s longest lava tubes, historic goldmining towns and outback cattle stations and offers a wealth of indigenous culture.

3 Sydney to the south coast via Canberra (NSW/ACT) If you want to combine the country, Australia s national capital and the coast, then this is the perfect drive. This loop drive encompasses the three distinct areas of the Southern Highlands, Canberra and the south coast and can be extended by adding on the Poachers Trail, just outside Canberra, or continuing further south to the Snowy Mountains.

4 Fraser Island (Qld) Just off the coast from Queensland s Hervey Bay is World-Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world and the only place on the planet where rainforest grows on sand. The only way to get around the island is by four-wheel-drive and the 75-mile beach on the eastern side of the island is often referred to as the main highway .

5 Explorers Highway, Adelaide to Darwin (SA, NT) This highway takes its name from John McDouall Stuart, one of the first European explorers to traverse the continent from south to north and gaze upon the red centre. Trace the route he took and enjoy the changing colours of the landscape, from the vineyards of Clare Valley wine country through the arid red landscape of the centre to the tropical Top End. The highway links some of Australia s most famous outback landmarks and towns and it s worth breaking up your trip by sightseeing along the way.

6 Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin through the Margaret River (WA) Lovers of fine wine, gourmet food and art and craft galleries will enjoy this drive from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin through the Margaret River region of Western Australia. The region is famous for its stunning coastline, spectacular limestone caves, towering old growth forests, world-class surf waves and award-winning wines.

7 Bloomfield Track: Cape Tribulation to Cooktown (Qld) A four-wheel-drive vehicle is a must for this drive which links Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield River in far north Queensland, joining the Cooktown Road at Black Mountain. This drive allows you to appreciate the wilderness of this remote region, with its tropical rainforests, spectacular coastline and fascinating wildlife.

8 Pacific coast touring route, Sydney to Brisbane (NSW, Qld) This classic touring route stretches from Sydney to Brisbane following the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean and is popular with Australian holiday makers and visitors alike. Discover an endless array of beautiful beaches, pretty bays and relaxing coastal towns.

9 Coast to coast, Hobart to Strahan (Tas) The coast-to-coast drive starts in Hobart, winds its way through the picturesque Derwent Valley and climbs into the highlands until it reaches the stark beauty of the central plateau and Lake St Clair. From there the route passes through the breathtaking scenery of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park before arriving at Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania.

10 Country lovers, Melbourne to Adelaide (inland route) This rural journey takes you from Melbourne to the goldfields, spa country and the Grampians, on to Penola and the Coonawarra wine region, then through the Murraylands and into the green Adelaide Hills.

Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia

  • Coral Bay and Exmouth — 1250km from Perth, are gateways to the magnificent Ningaloo Reef
  • Karijini National Park — a major destination in the Pilbara. featuring huge canyons and gorges, and nice hikes through majestic scenery

  • Purnululu National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site features the enigmatic Bungle Bungle dome formations
  • Shark Bay — on the westernmost point of Australia, the small town is known for stromatolites and the dolphins at Monkey Mia
  • Southern Forests — get among lush ancient forests around Denmark and Pemberton where towering karri and marri trees fringe the rugged coastline of D’Entrecasteaux National Park

Understand Edit

The large majority of the the 2 million inhabitants live in the southwestern part of the state, in or close to Perth . the capital and the most isolated city of this size anywhere in the world. Outside of the Perth area there are less than 500,000 people, hence the demoynm Sandgropers. The largest towns outside Perth metro are Albany and Geralton. only about 30,000 population each depending on seasonal fluctuations. Beyond the coast, Western Australia’s vast interior is very sparsely populated, with only a handful of townships with over a few thousand residents. Mining settlements and cattle stations are thinly-spread so it is all to easy to find yourself alone in a 100 mile radius.

Geography Edit

Mount Augustus is widely claimed to be the world’s largest monolith

Western Australia covers about third of the total land mass of Australia. It encompasses climatic zones from the monsoonal and tropical north, to the temperate and mediterranean south, and the desert and barren inland. Apart from the south-western coast, the majority of the land is extremely old, eroded, flat, arid and infertile.

The population centres are extremely isolated from one another, and from the other populated zones of Australia. This and the tough environment may account for a more independent spirit than in the eastern states.

The vastness of the state is certainly not to be underestimated when planning your trip. If it were a country, it would be in the top 10 by area, as large as Argentina. larger than any African or European country, and twice the size of Alaska. It is the largest statoid in the world (sub-national body) besides the Sakha Republic in Russia.

Perth and the south-west corner including the Margaret River and Albany are easily accessible, as is Broome. Visiting much of the rest of the state requires some planning, and will probably require some long drives. Never plan on doing a road trip, without clearly telling either the authorties or someone else, on you’re planned route, as you could be buggered if you break down. Make sure you always have lots of water (and spare gas) with you.

History Edit

Western Australia was discovered by the Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog in 1616 while en-route to what is now known as Jakarta. In the following decade, other Dutch explorers would encounter the land here, but with no apparent natural resources to exploit, left as quickly as they came. During the late 18th century, the British and the French began to explore the more Southern regions of Western Australia and in 1826 the British decided that King George Sound would be a suitable location for a settlement. Three years later the Swan River Colony was established and this would later become the city of Perth. The state grew slowly until the discovery of gold in Kalgoorlie in the 1890s, which led to a huge influx of pepole.

Western Australia is the only state to never have been part of New South Wales and is the only Australian state to have tried to leave the federation, voting to secede in 1933. A delegation was sent to Britain to petition parliament to pass the legislation needed to enable independence, but it was determined that the British parliament did not have the necessary powers to pass such legislation. The suggestion of secession still appears in the Western Australian media from time to time, and there are many Western Australians who support the idea.

Time Zone Edit

Western Australia is in the Australian Western Standard Time zone, 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+8). It doesn’t observe daylight savings time, and is two hours behind the east coast of Australia during winter, and falls three hours behind New South Wales. Victoria. and Tasmania when they move to daylight savings. Note that not all of W.A. is in the same time zone! Residents of towns east of Caiguna on the Eyre Highway (including Eucla. Madura. Mundrabilla and Border Village) in the south-east corner near the South Australian border do not follow official Western Australian time. Instead, they use what is unofficially known as Central Western Standard Time, which is halfway between Western and Central time–UTC+8:45.

Get in Edit

By plane Edit

Perth has the only airport in Western Australia with regular international flights.

The vast majority of interstate flights also land in Perth. However there are a small number of interstate flights to Kalgoorlie. Kununurra. Karratha and Broome. Skywest has a weekly flight from Kalgoorlie to Melbourne, however it may still be cheaper to fly Kalgoorlie – Perth – Melbourne depending on the travel dates desired.

The price of flights from other Australian capital cities to Perth fluctuates wildly. The red-eye overnight flights can often be obtained at a discount over the more civilised flight times.

By car Edit

Considering the huge distances, driving into Western Australia from anywhere else is an experience by itself.

There are only two sealed roads into Western Australia: in the south, the Eyre Highway is the most direct route from Adelaide to Perth. In the north, the Victoria Highway connects the Kimberley region with the Northern Territory up to Darwin. Both involve extremely long drives. Perth-Adelaide is at least 3 days of driving with stops only to sleep, and much of the drive is across the extraordinarily barren Nullabor Plain. Darwin-Perth is at least a week.

It is often possible to organise one-way car hire without additional fees from Adelaide to Perth. Shop around, and check conditions carefully, as some cars hired in Adelaide cannot even be driven into Western Australia.

The unsealed Great Central Road, Tanami Track and Gunbarrel Highway run between the Northern Territory and remote Western Australian towns.

By rail Edit

There is one railway connecting Western Australia with the eastern states. The Indian Pacific [2] train service runs between Sydney and Perth via Kalgoorlie. Adelaide and Broken Hill. Prices are generally more expensive than air travel, but you can put your car on the train. The train ride is a unique experience in itself, as it can take 3 nights to get to Sydney at the other end of the line and you see a lot of rugged beauty along the way.

Quarantine Edit

There are quarantine rules [3] if you are coming from other states in Australia. You cannot bring fruits and vegetables (including seeds and cuttings) into Western Australia. Frozen fresh food is also not allowed but you will be OK with commercially packaged foods, except honey and bee products. There are quarantine checkpoints set up on the state borders and rules are strictly enforced. Inspectors board trains into the state to check passengers, and there are checkpoints at all airports.

If you are arriving directly from overseas, additional quarantine rules apply. See the Australia article for details.

Get around Edit

By car Edit

If you want to travel across WA by road, be ready to drive a lot to get from point A to point B. There are only a limited number of sealed roads (any map of the state will probably show you all of them), if you plan to leave them to get to more remote areas you will need to consider renting a 4WD. Contact the company to which you rent the vehicle to check the policy concerning driving on unsealed tracks, as you might have to get their authorization. Driving a rented conventional (non-4WD) vehicle on an unsealed track may breach your rental contract and void your insurance. Check with the local depot before arriving.

When to Go

When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, Australia is basking in the Southern Hemisphere s summer, and vice versa. Midwinter in Australia is July and August, and the hottest months are November through March. Remember, unlike in the Northern Hemisphere, the farther south you go in Australia, the colder it gets.

The Travel Seasons

Airfares to Australia are lowest from mid-April to late August the best time to visit the Red Centre and the Great Barrier Reef.

High Season – The peak travel season in the most popular parts of Australia is the Aussie winter. In much of the country particularly the northern half the most pleasant time to travel is April through September, when daytime temperatures are 66[dg]F to 88[dg]F (19[dg]C 31[dg]C) and it rarely rains. June, July, and August are the busiest months in these parts; you ll need to book accommodations and tours well in advance, and you will pay higher rates then, too.

On the other hand, Australia s summer is a nice time to visit the southern states, and even in winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing.

Generally, the best months to visit Australia are September and October, when it s often still warm enough to hit the beach in the southern states, it s cool enough to tour Uluru, and the humidity and rains have not come to Cairns (although it will be very hot by Oct).

Low Season – October through March (summer) is just too hot, too humid, or too wet or all three to tour the Red Centre. North Queensland, including Cairns, suffers an intensely hot, humid wet season from November or December through March or April. So if you decide to travel at this time and lots of people do be prepared to take the heat, the inconvenience of potential flooding, and the slight chance of encountering cyclones.

Australian National Public Holidays

On national public holidays, services such as banking, postal needs, and purchasing of alcohol might be limited or unavailable. There also may be additional holidays as declared by individual states and territories, such as Melbourne Cup Day: Based on the country s most famous thoroughbred horse race, Melbourne Cup Day is celebrated the first Tuesday of November, and the race is nicknamed the race that stops the nation.

* New Year s Day, January 1. Expect the usual fireworks and festivities to begin the night of December 31 to ring in the New Year.

* Australia Day, January 26. This national day recognizes the First Fleet s arrival in 1788, when 11 ships made their way from England to establish a colony here in Australia.

* Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. The Christian commemoration of Jesus crucifixion and his death. In Australia, Good Friday is observed the first Friday after the full moon (on or after Mar 21).

* Easter Monday, day after Easter Sunday. The Christian commemoration of Jesus resurrection from the dead.

* Anzac Day, April 25. ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day recognizes those who have served the nation in times of war.

* Christmas Day, December 25. When Christians celebrate Jesus birth. Note: If Christmas is on a weekend day, the next Monday is termed a public holiday.

* Boxing Day, December 26. Originally a British tradition involving gift-giving, Boxing Day is now an Australian holiday, and some sports kick off their seasons on this date. If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, the next Monday is deemed a public holiday. If it falls on a Sunday, the next Tuesday is the holiday.

Steer Clear of the Vacation Rush

Try to avoid Australia from Boxing Day (Dec 26) to the end of January, when Aussies take their summer vacations. For popular seaside holiday spots, hotel rooms and airline seats get scarce as hen s teeth, and it s a rare airline or hotel that will discount full rates by even a dollar.

Note. This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Working Holiday Maker Program

Planning to stay and work while you’re visiting Australia?

Planning to stay and work while you’re visiting Australia?

If you’re aged between 18 and 30 and hold a passport for a country or region participating in Australia’s Working Holiday Maker programme, you may be eligible to apply for a 12-month visa which enables you to work in Australia while you are here.

The Australian Government’s Working Holiday Maker Programme, which includes the Working Holiday visa and the Work and Holiday visa, is a cultural exchange programme which enables young travellers to have an extended holiday and earn money through short-term employment. If you work in Australia’s regional areas, in certain circumstances you may even be able to extend your stay for an additional 12 months.

The Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection manages all permanent and temporary immigration matters for Australia including visa applications. Their website will tell you everything you need to know about how the Working Holiday Maker programme works, participating countries, the type of visa you need to enter Australia, your eligibility and obligations and how to apply: www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work

The Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462)

The Working Holiday Maker programme has two types of visas: Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) and Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462) depending on your country of residence. See below for lists of countries eligible for each visa.

If you intend to participate in Australia’s Working Holiday Maker programme, you must apply for your visa before you arrive. These types of visas allow you to stay and work in Australia in all types of full-time, part-time, casual, shift and voluntary work for up to 12 months. You can leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid.

You can also study for a maximum of four months in Australia in addition to working during your holiday.

You will need to meet certain health, character and financial requirements and declare that you will respect Australian values and obey Australian laws before a visa is granted. You should also have a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia. Health insurance from your own country is also recommended.

The Working Holiday Maker programme is not suitable for those seeking permanent employment or full-time study in Australia. If your primary reason for coming to Australia is to seek employment or study you should enquire about a business visa or student visa which may better suit your needs.

Read the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection visa requirements carefully to determine your eligibility and obligations before you apply. There is a non-refundable charge when you lodge your visa application.

Which visa should I apply for?

Tucan Travel Australia, Tours to Peru – an independent review by

#tucan travel
#

Tucan Travel UK

Tucan has been leading travellers and exploring the depths of South America since the early 80’s. Having specialised in Latin America for so many years they have taken their award winning formula and expanded their tours to adventure destinations worldwide. Over the years they have earned an excellent reputation for providing quality trips that are excellent value for money. They are one of the best tour companies in the world in their specialist styles of travel.

Tucan offers a selection of different types of trip. We have summarised them briefly below (information provided by Tucan):

Discovery Tours

When Tucan Travel started operating Discovery tours five years ago we were certain this travel style would prove popular, and we were not mistaken. This travel style grew from an emerging trend of travellers who wanted to visit the region in comfort and security but with an adventurous spirit. Discovery Tours offer clients the flexibility of private vehicle travel with the comfort of hotel accommodation. The itineraries have many inclusions but are well structured to also allow the traveller plenty of free time.

Discovery Tours are ideal for travellers who may be concerned about safety, enjoy vehicle-based travel and like the comforts of hotel accommodation. Advantages of Discovery Tour travel include having the services of both a tour leader and a driver, the flexibility to stop for photos and breaks when the group chooses and the ability to store their extra luggage and souvenirs on the vehicle.

Adventure Tours

Our Adventure Tours are continually evolving and have become our most popular touring style. Over the years we have redesigned our itineraries according to client feedback. We take into consideration time to relax after long travelling days, we choose hotels based on their safety, cleanliness and central locations and we work hard to ensure our clients have the opportunity to experience the best a country has to offer. Adventure Tours allow travellers more authentic interaction with the local population through travelling on a variety of local transport.

Adventure Tours are particularly enjoyable for those who see the journey as the destination. Travellers who consider a local market the perfect place to sit and absorb its culture, or a bus journey through the countryside with a few rural animals on board a laugh. Adventure travellers may have taken Spanish lessons before they travelled, spent hours on the internet researching new destinations and are now infatuated with travelling.

Overland Expeditions

Overland Expeditions attract a distinctive clientele: genuine travel addicts who realise that South America and Africa are huge continents which deserve as much time as they can possibly afford to give them. These tours run from 6 to 171 days in length and travel on our modern and comfortable fleet of overland vehicles. Clients combine hotel/hostel accommodation in the larger cities with camping in the smaller towns and national parks. Tucan Travel offer the highest quality equipment, the best overland vehicles around, a large support network and a dedicated and experienced crew, making our Overland Expeditions the best in South America and Africa.

Due to their longer durations and camping element, Overland Expeditions generally attract younger travellers. Some are on career breaks, others have finished tertiary education and are on a round-the-world trip. But one thing is certain, Overland Expedition travellers know what they want to see and theyre here to enjoy it – even if it takes a little time.

Budget Expeditions

Budget Expeditions was born in 2003 as the youth brand of Tucan Travel, with carefully designed itineraries for 18 to 35s who want to explore the world but dont want to pay the earth. Because we offer so many optional excursions, Budget Expeditions are an excellent choice for price-conscious travellers who want the flexibility to choose their own adventures with maximum control over their budgets.

In 2008, Tucan Travel took the independent brand back under its wing as a travel style. It now offers a broad range of itineraries across South America and East Southern Africa.

Independent Travel

Travel to adventurous destinations has increased in popularity in every market. Tucan Travel recognises that group travel may not be everyones choice and we are continuously researching and expanding travellers options for Independent travel. Travellers may choose day trips, hotel and/or transport combinations, locally guided excursions or choose to link modules together to create their own personal holiday.

Singles, couples, families and private groups choose the flexibility of Independent Travel. Clients select hotel comfort rating, when and where they want to travel and for how long. Whether theyre looking for an excursion of one day or several weeks were sure with our Independent Travel packages we can cater for all needs.

Expedition Cruising

There are parts of the world that can only be accessed by ship, such as the polar regions, and others that are best explored via rivers, like the Amazon rainforest. Places like Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands are absolutely teeming with wildlife, so an Expedition Cruise gives you the best chance to get closer to nature. Our cruises operate on smaller, purpose-built or specially adapted ships that offer high levels of service, excellent facilities and crucially, represent great value for money. Our Expedition Cruises focus on the adventure itself rather than just reaching a destination, so you really get the most out of every minute of your holiday.

Expedition Cruises are perfect for adventure travellers who are looking for a way to experience remote areas of the world in comfort and style. If youre interested in walking across diverse and fascinating landscapes, snorkelling and swimming activities, lectures by knowledgeable naturalist guides and meeting local people, Expedition Cruises are for you.

Australia Travel Maps

Arming yourself with maps of various types is a necessity when learning to get around in a new place. International students who come to Australia should have road and transportation maps, as well as maps of the local area. Visitors should also possess a complete map of Australia and its regions. Fortunately, maps are readily available for those who need them.

Types of Maps

A complete map of Australia typically displays the six states and two territories that comprise the country: New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and the Northern Territory.

Transportation maps are handy for newcomers. Australia offers several means of public transportation including bus, rail, air, and ferry. Many of the bus and rail routes coordinate, permitting visitors to easily plan trips and change from rail to bus or bus to rail to get to their destinations. The rail system boasts comfortable, modern long distance and commuter trains. Bus travel is common in Australia. Buses are an economical and practical way to travel through the country. Most metro districts operate efficient bus routes and maps are available both online and at stations. For those who drive, a map of Australia roads and highways is imperative.

Other useful maps include recreation, topographical, and wilderness area maps, beach maps, points of interest maps, local, and historical maps. Back country activities, such as hiking, are extremely popular in parts of Australia and a current map is essential when participating in such pastimes.

Along with the traditional map of Australia, transportation, road, highway, and historical maps are some more unusual maps. For example, the Australian government offers a National Public Toilet map on its web site that lets visitors interactively plan a trip that marks every public toilet along the way. The map can be downloaded to a computer or mobile phone. Perhaps a less useful, but nonetheless interesting, map is the Australia Is Big map that overlays a graphic of various countries over the Australian continent to help viewers visualize just how big Australia is.

The government of Australia provides many online mapping services. You can plan your trip, view public transportation routes and connections, download and print maps in PDF format, or download maps to your mobile phone. Most state and territory web sites offer similar services.

Many online trip planning and mapping services sell printed maps, atlases, and other types of maps. Printed maps can also be found at various Australian locations within a locale.

Public bus and rail system web sites are extremely useful sources of maps. Routes can be planned online and maps printed out according to specific instructions.

International students will find many map resources at their educational institution. A map of Australia is just one type they will find. Local, transportation, historical, points of interest, and many other types of maps will be available to them.

Accurate maps will go far to enhance your stay in Australia. Being lost will probably happen on occasion, until you are familiar with the area, but with good maps and common sense, getting lost will be a minor diversion and not a frustrating experience.

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont

Asset sales plan secures EU backing for $130 billion Dow, DuPont merger

(Reuters) – Dow Chemical and DuPont won the blessing of the European Union for their $130 billion merger on Monday by agreeing to sell substantial assets including key research and development activities.

The European Commission had been concerned that the merger of two of the biggest and oldest U.S. chemical producers would leave few incentives to produce new herbicides and pesticides in the future. The deal is one of a trio of mega mergers that will reshape the industry and consolidate six companies into three.

Asset sales would ensure competition in the sector and benefit European farmers and consumers, the Commission said.

“We need effective competition in this sector so companies are pushed to develop products that are ever safer for people and better for the environment,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

“Our decision today ensures that the merger between Dow and DuPont does not reduce price competition for existing pesticides or innovation for safer and better products in the future.”

The two other big deals in the industry are ChemChina’s [CNNCC.UL] $43 billion bid for Syngenta and Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto.

Dow and DuPont said they were still on target for $3 billion in cost synergies and $1 billion in growth benefits.

The deal is still to be approved by regulators in the United States, Brazil, China, Australia and Canada, but the companies said they were confident of clearance in all remaining jurisdictions.

“This regulatory milestone is a significant step toward closing the merger transaction, with the intention to subsequently spin into three independent publicly traded companies,” Dow spokeswoman Rachelle Schikorra said in an email.

The EU approval may be a sign that U.S. regulators would follow suit because the agencies have traditionally coordinated on reviews and remedies for large multinational mergers, said Diana Moss, president of the American Antitrust Institute non-profit group.

However, any required asset sales would likely reflect antitrust concerns in the local marketplace.

“In the U.S. there are very high shares in corn and soybean seeds. We would expect those problems to be significant enough for enforcers in the U.S. to remedy them,” Moss said.

Weighty Decision

The 1,000-page decision underlined the significance of the merger. In return for the EU green light, DuPont will divest large parts of its global pesticides business, including its global research and development organization.

The unit makes herbicides for cereals, oilseed rape, sunflower, rice and pasture and insecticides for insect control for fruits and vegetables.

Dow, in turn, will sell two acid co-polymer manufacturing facilities in Spain and the United States, as well as a contract with a third party through which it buys ionomers. The company has already found a buyer in South Korea’s SK Innovation.

“The main surprises here are the inclusion of the pesticides and the exclusion of any kind of seed assets,” Bernstein analysts wrote in a note. The analysts also said they had expected EU to be concerned about the concentration of seed sales, and that they would require Dow to divest its corn seeds business.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager holds a news conference after Dow Chemical gained conditional EU antitrust approval on Monday for their $130 billion merger by agreeing to significant asset sales, one of a trio of mega mergers that will redraw the agrochemicals industry, in Brussels, Belgium March 27, 2017. Yves Herman

“We see the required divestments here as smaller than we originally expected, due to the exclusion of seed assets”.

More than most other developed countries, Australia seizes the imagination. For most visitors its name is a shorthand for an endless summer where the living is easy; a place where the adventures are as vast as the horizons and the jokes flow as freely as the beer; a country of can-do spirit and easy friendliness. No wonder Australians call theirs the Lucky Country.

Every aspect of Australian life and culture, whether its matey attitudes or its truly great outdoors, is a product of its scale and population – or lack of it. In size, it rivals the USA, yet its population is 23 million, leading to one of the lowest country population densities on Earth. The energy of its contemporary culture is in contrast to a landscape that is ancient and often looks it: much of central and western Australia – the bulk of the country – is overwhelmingly arid and flat. In contrast, its cities, most founded as recently as the mid-nineteenth century, burst with a vibrant, youthful energy.

The most iconic scenery is the Outback. the vast fabled desert that spreads west of the Great Dividing Range into the country’s epic interior. Here, vivid blue skies, cinnamon-red earth, deserted gorges and geological features as bizarre as the wildlife comprise a unique ecology, one that has played host to the oldest surviving human culture for up to 70,000 years (just 10,000 years after Homo sapiens is thought to have emerged from Africa).

This harsh interior has forced modern Australia to become a coastal country. Most of the population lives within 20km of the ocean, occupying a suburban, southeastern arc that extends from southern Queensland to Adelaide. These urban Australians celebrate the typical New World values of material self-improvement through hard work and hard play, with an easy-going vitality that visitors, especially Europeans, often find refreshingly hedonistic. A sunny climate also contributes to this exuberance, with an outdoor life in which a thriving beach culture and the congenial backyard “barbie” are central.

Although visitors might eventually find this low-key, suburban lifestyle rather prosaic, there are opportunities – particularly in the Northern Territory – to experience Australia’s indigenous peoples and their culture through visiting ancient art sites, taking tours and, less easily, making personal contact. Many Aboriginal people – especially in central Australia – have managed to maintain a traditional lifestyle (albeit with modern amenities), speaking their own languages and living by their own laws. Conversely, most Aboriginal people you’ll come across in country towns and cities are victims of what is scathingly referred to as “welfare colonialism” – a disempowering consequence of dole cheques and other subsidies combined with little chance of meaningful employment, often resulting in a destructive cycle of poverty, ill health and substance abuse. There’s still a long way to go before black and white people in Australia can exist on genuinely equal terms.

    Australia Expedition

With roughly the population of metropolitan New York City and the landmass of the continental United States, Australia is the most sparsely populated continent on the planet after Antarctica. Its isolation for millennia allowed unique ecosystems and cultures to thrive. Explore rain forests, deserts, and the world’s largest coral reef, observing and documenting fascinating wildlife along the way. Meet members of the Aboriginal community— the world’s oldest living culture—which settled here more than 50,000 years ago. Experience Australia through the lens of your On Assignment project: Photography or Wildlife Biodiversity.

+ CLICK TO MAP TO ENLARGE

    Sydney

The expedition begins with an orientation in the vibrant coastal city of Sydney. Break into teams to begin working on your On Assignment project. Browse a photo exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales, explore the lively Rocks district, and take in spectacular views of the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Attend a game of rugby or Australian rules football, or go surfing at Manly Beach. Meet your first koalas and kangaroos at the famous Taronga Zoo, or visit the Sydney Aquarium to get acquainted with the marine life you will encounter on the Great Barrier Reef.

    Uluru and the Outback

    Days 6-10

Fly from Sydney to Alice Springs and begin your journey through the Outback towards the largest monolith on Earth, Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock). Steeped in mythology, this colossal piece of sandstone rises abruptly from the desert plain. Trek between the giant rounded domes of the adjacent Kata Tjuta on the lookout for bright green ring-necked parrots. Visit an Aboriginal community at Wallace Rockhole for a guided tour through ancestral lands, and learn about the traditional craft of dot painting before trying your hand at the art form. Plunge into the cool and refreshing waters of the Ellery Big Hole, examine ancient rock art and medicinal plants, and listen to Dreamtime stories told by our Aboriginal guides. Through the lens of your camera, use the barren landscape to practice working with depth of field, and spotting dingoes, red kangaroos, and majestic wedge- tailed eagles that inhabit this otherwise still scene. Set up camp in the bush, help collect firewood and prepare dinner, and sleep under the stars. Spot the Southern Cross and Scorpio, and learn a whole new set of Southern Hemisphere constellations.

Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef

    Days 11-20

I loved visiting such a wide variety of environments—from the outback to Sydney to the reef to the rain forest— and had such unique experiences in each one.

    Heather M. Australia, 2015

Fly to the northern Queensland city of Cairns, and transfer to Port Douglas, our hub for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Set out on a private boat for a two-day snorkeling adventure with marine biologists. Anchor at the outer reef and snorkel along brilliant fields of coral. Spot sea turtles, giant parrotfish, harmless reef sharks, and maybe even a migrating humpback whale. Gain insights about the reef from the marine biologists on board, and learn about the threats to this unique ecosystem and the efforts being made to protect it.

Back on land, head north into the 125 million-year-old Daintree Rainforest. Hike through the lush vegetation to see cassowaries, crocodiles, tree kangaroos, and other endemic wildlife. Spend the night in a jungle lodge and encounter the native species of the surrounding rain forest, wetlands, and reef.

Wind down on the coastal side of the park on the white-sand beaches of Cape Tribulation. Explore a mangrove habitat where the jungle meets the ocean and kayak along the reef. Trek out to the farthest point of the cape in search of whales and other marine life passing by. Return to Cairns for the final night and present your On Assignment project to the rest of the group. Celebrate your adventure with your fellow participants before flying home.

Australia is an incredibly diverse island, continent, and country- both culturally and geographically speaking. The cities of Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney are scenic and thriving melting pots. The country itself deserves many trips of discovery, or at least a two-week hiatus to explore some of its key places.

    WORK AND TRAVEL Australia

    New Zealand

New Zealand only realy has two speeds – maxin chillaxin or full-throttle, rubber-burning fast. It s what makes the country so diverse, in terms of landscape and population. If you find yourself in front of a lovely mountain (which you will at some point) you could stand at the bottom with your picnic, taking in the scenenry and breathing in the air or grab your wingsuit and jump right off the top of that mother. And both are completely normal in NZ, that s its quirk.

    Take A Bite

Its not all Witchetty grubs and Kangaroo steaks over in Aus. By all means, dig in if either of those take your fancy but there are plenty of other sweet and savoury treats that the Aussies lay claim to. You may wish to try a delicious Anzac biscuit, traditionally made by wives who sent them to their solder husbands fighting in World War 1. We love a cookie with a romantic history.

If you re looking for a fat free option, a delicious hunk of smoked emu goes down well. It is also a popular pizza topping.

Don t forget the Macadamia nut, native to eastern Australia and included in a wide range of cooking. If you re missing your home comforts and fancy a slice of Vegemite on toast. Vegemite is so popular with Australians it is rumoured that summer camps across the US have started paying their Aussie staff by the jar full, to ensure that they keep hunger and homesickness at bay.

If all this food is making you thirsty you can pull up a beach towel and lay back on the golden sand with an ice cold pot of VB, a box of Goon or maybe just a ginger ale.

    Blend In With The Locals

Australia is well-known as a cultural melting pot – the country s original indigenous population, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were joined by the migrants, or descendants of migrants, from 200 different countries to help make up today s population of nearly 23 million people.

Despite this super-relaxed and smooth-talking crowd there is still room for you to don a pair of Ugg boots (yes, despite the weather) and take part in some cricket or some Australian Rules Football. Not so sporty? No problem. Australia has a lot to offer with regards to music, theatre and literature. If you just fancy a quiet evening in front of the TV where better to start than with an episode of Neighbors?

Health Information for Travelers to Australia – Traveler view #travel #affiliate

    #travelling to australia
    #

    Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

Depending on what time of year you are traveling, you may need this vaccine if you are visiting certain remote areas of Australia for more than a month, or if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors in those areas during a shorter trip. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans. See more in-depth information on Japanese encephalitis in Australia .

Rabies is present in bats in Australia. However, it is not a major risk to most travelers. CDC recommends rabies vaccine for only these groups:

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities in remote areas that put them at risk for bat bites (such as adventure travel and caving).
    • People who will be working with or around bats (such as wildlife professionals and researchers).

There is no risk of yellow fever in Australia. The government of Australia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Australia. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.

Don’t let your dream overseas holiday turn into a nightmare

As much as we all dream of having the perfect overseas holiday, things can go wrong. Your travel plans are cancelled. You arrive on time, but your luggage is delayed—possibly forever. Or your money is stolen, leaving you stranded both physically and financially.

And what if you become sick or injured and need to go to hospital? Your health insurance won’t cover any overseas medical expenses, which means you could face a nasty bill at the end of your treatment.

That’s why you need international travel insurance if you’re heading overseas. It can reimburse you for the clothes you had to buy when your luggage went AWOL, and cover those medical treatments. It can even cover your personal liability expenses if you get into legal trouble.

Naturally, we have domestic travel insurance for your holiday within Australia too. Our beautiful country may be largely secure and safe but many of us are no strangers to theft and delayed trips. Cover to ensure that your trip isn’t spoiled by the unforeseen will allow you to relax and to just enjoy the ride!

And while you may think you have the cheapest travel insurance, are you sure it’s the best travel insurance for you?

When it comes to cheap travel insurance in Australia, you need to look at more than just the price. So when you compare travel insurance, make sure you’re getting the cover you need at the price you can afford. And that’s exactly what you could get with Budget Direct’s Simply Smarter Travel Insurance.
