One Arts major (48 units)
One Arts minor, specialisation or a second Arts major (24 units/48 units)
Elective courses from the College of Arts and Social Sciences

About this degree

Single degree
In a Bachelor of Arts program you will study a total of 144 units. Typically you will take 4 courses per semester (total of 24 units) as a full time student giving you a total of 24 (6-unit) courses across your whole degree.
You’ll need to take one Arts major (8 courses) and one Arts minor (or specialisation) (4 courses), and four Arts electives (4 courses). If you’d like to, you can use your Arts electives to extend your Arts minor into a second Arts major. You’ll also get to choose eight electives from courses right across ANU. You can use these electives to try a range of courses or to take a major or minor in a non-Arts subject.

In a Bachelor of Arts double degree program you will study a total of 96 units. Typically you will take 4 courses per semester (total of 24 units) as a full time student giving you a total of 16 courses across your whole degree. However, for each semester you are likely to take 2 courses from your Bachelor of Arts degree and then 2 courses from the other half of your double degree – still a total of 4 courses a semester.

You’ll need to take one Arts major (8 courses) and one Arts minor (or specialisation) (4 courses), and four Arts electives (4 courses). If you’d like to, you can use your Arts electives to extend your Arts minor into a second Arts major.

Enrolment Status

While it’s possible to enrol in fewer courses per semester, which is called studying part-time, it will take you longer to finish your program and get your degree. If you are an international student you must always be full-time.

A course (usually 6 units) can only be counted towards one major or minor.
You need to enrol in courses for both First Semester and Second Semester.
• You can’t study more than four courses (24 units) per semester, eight for the year.
• You need to enrol in courses for at least one potential Arts major
• You need to enrol in courses for at least one potential Arts minor or a second potential Arts major
• You may take 1000-level courses later in your program. But remember you can’t count more than ten 1000-level courses (60 units) towards your single degree or six 1000-level courses (36 units) towards your Bachelor of Arts half of the double degree.

Important things to keep in mind when choosing your 1000-level courses

When you enrol for the first time you will study ‘1000-level’ courses. These courses have‘1’ as the first number in their course code, such as ARTS1234 .

Majors and Minors

There are over one hundred Arts majors, minors and specialisations available for you to study, from Ancient Greek to Visual Arts Practice.

If you aren’t sure what you want to study for your whole degree, that’s fine. You don’t need to commit to majors or minors until after your first year. Using electives can help to keep your options open.

From the list of Bachelor of Arts majors and minors choose the 1000 level courses you need to enrol in.

Because there are so many options available, you will need to take your time choosing what you want to study.

Electives

While you only need to enrol in courses for one Arts major and one Arts minor, you can use your electives to enrol in 1000-level courses for other Arts majors or minors. That way you keep your options open. Once you’ve selected courses for an Arts major, and an Arts minor or second Arts major, you should choose electives to make up the balance of your courses.

To find 1000-level courses, use the catalogue finder. Remember you can choose up to 8 courses from another ANU College at the University if you are undertaking the single Bachelor of Arts program.

Study Options

Bachelor of Arts – Single

This is a typical study pattern for the first year of a student undertaking a Bachelor of Art with one Arts Major and one Arts minor.

Online Student Guides

Online degree programs have come a long way since the early days of distance learning. Every year, more colleges and universities are putting courses online as a way to serve a growing population of students who want to get a degree but don’t want to sacrifice quality or disrupt their personal lives to do it. For working adults and other students with serious commitments, the opportunity to get an online degree means they can enhance their education and improve their careers in ways that wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago.

That’s where we can help. Our goal at OnlineDegrees.org is to give you the tools to find the best online degree for your personal and professional goals. From online-only colleges to traditional schools with online degree programs, we offer guides that will help you prepare for the future.

You Need a College Degree

A college degree remains one of the best ways to gain an advantage in the working world and set yourself apart in the eyes of an employer. Getting an online degree demonstrates not just mastery of certain skills but a willingness to commit to major projects and improve yourself and your abilities. What’s more, studying through online degree programs means you’re getting the same high-quality information as your counterparts at traditional colleges and universities. While a degree is never a guarantee for a job, it’s still one of the best investments you can make for your future.

Working Adults Drive Higher Education Reformation

There are plenty of online degree programs to choose from, too. Associate and bachelor’s degrees are popular ways to learn about a subject and gain experience that can be crucial when entering the working world. There are also master’s degrees and online Ph.D.s available, too, for those students who’ve already achieved a certain level of education but want to see where postsecondary degrees can take them. The growing number of working adults looking to get an online degree has led to a dramatic rise in the number and quality of programs being offered. There’s never been a better time for online education.

Online Degrees Become Legit

Accreditation is the process through which online colleges and universities have their services examined and vetted to prove they’re offering high-quality classes to their students. This is the same thing that traditional colleges and universities do to prove their worth. As distance education has become more popular, it’s become more important than ever for students to make sure they’re attending a quality institution.

Featured Research

We used the official Bureau of Labor Statistics National Compensation Survey to estimate lifetime salaries for each of several hundred jobs and occupations. Since the primary purpose of the exercise was comparisons between degrees rather than exact predictions for individuals, we used a simplified model of career progression, in which holders of all jobs start near the lower end of the salary distribution for their occupation and receive raises in a steady fashion over the course of their working career. To reduce this salary curve to a single number, we used a net present value calculation with an assumed discount rate of 5%.

Online Nursing Degrees

One of the fastest growing areas of online education is the nursing field. To accomodate demand we have created Online Nursing Degrees, a new site dedicated to the nursing field.

Bachelor of Arts (BA): Hospitality Management Degree Overview #bs #hospitality #management,

Bachelor of Arts (BA): Hospitality Management Degree Overview

Essential Information

Hospitality management bachelor’s programs require four years of study, although accelerated 2-year programs are available for students who have an associate degree. Most programs provide a broad curriculum with specialties such as food and beverage operations, lodging and facilities management, conference and trade show planning, casino management, and even entrepreneurship.

B.A. programs typically include more liberal arts classes than Bachelor of Science programs. Online program options are available, as are many opportunities to study abroad. A management trainee program or internship is required of students in order to graduate. Generally, these programs require a high school diploma or GED for admission.

Find schools that offer these popular programs

  • Resort Management
  • Resort, Hotel, Motel, and Spa Management
  • Restaurant Mgmt
  • Travel and Tourism Management

Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management

In bachelor’s degree programs in hospitality management, students take general business coursework, such as marketing, business law, organizational behavior, computers, and accounting. General management topics, such as the legal aspects of the hospitality business and human resources management, may also be included. Core hospitality topics may cover:

  • Special events marketing
  • Food and beverage controls
  • Catering management
  • Security and loss prevention
  • Hospitality facilities management
  • Dining room service

Popular Career Choices

Graduates of hospitality management bachelor’s degree programs have opportunities in many areas or the food and beverage, travel, tourism, and lodging industries. Internships gained as part of the degree program may be helpful in securing employment in a particular venue or company. Some examples of entry-level management positions include:

  • Catering manager
  • Food service manager
  • Lodging manager
  • Sales manager
  • Meeting and convention planner

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for lodging managers is predicted to increase by 8% during the 2014-2024 decade. Meeting, convention and event planners should expect faster-than-average employment growth of 10% during the same time period. In May of 2015, the BLS estimated the mean annual salary of event planners was $50,910. Lodging managers averaged $57,810.

Continuing Education

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management may pursue an advanced degree, such as a master’s degree in hospitality management or international hospitality management. Large hospitality chains often promote from within, so work experience can also assist in career advancement.

Voluntary professional certification is available through many organizations, including the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute. This organization has certification options in housekeeping, sales, food and beverage, human resources, front office, security, revenue management, and maintenance. A series of education and experience requirements must be met to earn a designation.

Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Hospitality Management can learn how to operate a hospitality-oriented business. Graduates may be qualified for entry-level management positions, and they can pursue voluntary certifications to enhance their job applications. They may also go on to enroll in hospitality management master’s programs.

Should you get a second bachelor – s degree or go

#

Should you get a second bachelor’s degree or go for a master’s degree?

The question plagues more students than you might think.

Whether you want to change fields, be a more well-rounded job candidate or just learn something new, deciding between a second bachelor s degree and a master s degree is not always easy. While there doesn t seem to be one overarching correct answer binding everyone who considers the question, that doesn t mean an answer doesn t exist at all.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding between a second bachelor s degree or a master s degree .

Second bachelor s degree

If you can t get into your desired master s degree without a bachelor s degree in the subject, then you may want to do what Michael Au plans to do: Get a second bachelor s degree.

Au, who earned a bachelor s degree in biology from Southwestern University, plans on going to the University of Texas at Austin for his second degree a bachelor s in nursing .

I think that a master s in biology was not quite the direction I wanted to go in, Au said. I love biology but I don t think I would be happy with a master s in this field. I found myself more drawn to healthcare.

Be careful, though: Not every school allows someone to get a second bachelor s degree. Stanford University, for example, doesn t allow two degrees in the same area. Meaning, you can t get two Bachelor of Arts degree or two Bachelor of Science degrees, but can do one of each, with permission.

On the other hand, some schools have a fast track for students pursuing a second bachelor s, such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill s nursing program (nursing.unc.edu), which offers an accelerated four-term Bachelor of Science in Nursing option, granted you have the prerequisites completed.

Also, don t expect the same kind of financial aid options as you d have with a master s degree. According to a U.S. News World Report article, there are fewer financial aid options for those pursuing a second bachelor s.

Scholarship or private loan eligibility are not affected significantly, nor is eligibility for PLUS loans and work-study, according to the article, but federal loans may be at stake.

Federal Stafford student loans are available for second bachelor s degrees, but the lifetime limit is based on your total time as an undergraduate, reads the article, which also states the limit is $57,500 for undergraduates. A master s degree student would start over with federal Stafford student loan lifetime limits.

And according to Fastweb.com, students with a prior bachelor s degree are ineligible for the Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant).

So you may be spending more money than you would have if you just got your first degree in your now-desired subject. But with two degrees, you may be more diverse, as Au realized.

I think that a liberal arts education is so valuable but also a very practical degree is valuable, Au said. Now I m getting both!

Master s degree

If you want to change career paths or study something new, then a master s degree may make sense.

For Polly Thurston, who earned a bachelor s degree in art from Austin College, she decided her senior year of undergrad that she wanted to work in graphic design. Her school didn t have the degree so she had a decision to make: second bachelor s or master s. She chose a master s, eventually graduating with a master s in communication design from Pratt Institute.

I wanted to be challenged…and I hoped that the advanced degree would open more doors for me in the career world, said Thurston, who assumed a second bachelor s degree would be difficult for her with some of the basic courses and younger students. I think the master s degree gave me more confidence in my search and a more advanced set of tools.

In many cases, you have to have an undergraduate degree in the subject to be accepted into a master s or Ph.D. program. That s not always the case though, as Thurston found out. Also, you can sometimes take a few classes as a non-degree student to fulfill that requirement.

There are less scholarship opportunities for grad students (Scholarships.com has a separate page for grad students), though you may qualify for private students loans. And according to the U.S. Department of Education s Federal Student Aid page, grad students are eligible for:

  • The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program
  • Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program
  • Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program
  • Federal Pell Grant

There s no objectively right or wrong answer to the question of second bachelor s vs. master s. Just make sure you decide what s right for you.

How to Land a Finance Job With a Bachelor s Degree

Finance is an extremely competitive profession, especially at the entry level. The desks of investment professionals are piled high with the resumes of students who have dreams of big money, nice cars and getting on the path to being Masters of the Universe by the time they are 30. Finance is also a cyclical job market. when the stock market is booming, finance jobs boom as well; but when returns dwindle, so do the job listings. And even when the market is flush with jobs, finding a good job is key. Follow these five tips to dramatically increase your chance of landing a finance job even before hitting graduation.

Tip No. 1 – Land an Internship

For entry-level positions, interviewers do not expect candidates to know much. Many companies have orientation and training programs that teach new recruits the specifics of what they need to know, but having background knowledge is still expected. An internship can help to fill in for the lack of full-time experience and is not as difficult to get as a real job. Internships do not generally require much, if any, prior knowledge. They will likely be based around grunt work. performing tasks that anyone can do, such as making copies. But they provide learning experiences, references, networking opportunities and something tangible to talk about in an interview. Doing several internships also provides a great display of work ethic, which is a sought-after quality in the finance industry.

Tip No. 2 – Start Early

If you start in the summer before your first year in college, you can have a total of four summer internships before senior year. Is it necessary to do that many? No, but why not? Many finance internships are paid, so there are no excuses. If you are going to get a summer job anyway, it is better to do something that will further your career instead of just flipping burgers. The same holds true when attending college in a metropolitan area. Instead of working part-time at the local clothing store during the school year, file papers for a local investment advisor .

Tip No. 3 – Diversify Your Experiences

Don’t do five internships for equity traders unless you’re 100% sure you want to trade for a living. Try to switch it up a little and land internships around the industry. This will help you gain a better perspective in different areas and help you figure out what you really want to do. If you want to research bonds. an interviewer is likely to ask why. If you had an internship in fixed income and another in equities. you can give a more eloquent answer than: “I just like bonds.” Also, the different branches of finance are generally interconnected. Portfolio management makes use of trading and research, for example. Knowing a little about how the different sectors of finance work can give you an edge in the job market.

Finally, work hard at any internship you land. The references can be valuable no matter what, but more importantly, impressing your bosses during an internship can be a great way to open doors for a future full-time job with that company. Many of the summer analyst /internship programs at big banks are created to look for entry-level hires for the next year.

Tip No. 4 – Learn to Talk the Talk

To get a job in finance, you should ideally pick a business-oriented major like finance or economics. Many companies say that this does not matter, and it is very common to hear: “We hire all majors – we even have art history majors working at XYZ Company.” All is not lost for the art history majors, but it is still certainly better to apply for finance jobs with a finance degree.

Another great way to learn is to make reading financial news part of your regular routine. Pick up a subscription to The Wall Street Journal and/or the Financial Times and read it every day. As a student, you can normally get discounted subscriptions for these publications. Picking up a weekly magazine like The Economist or Barron’s will help expand your knowledge as well.

Immersing yourself in financial reading will help you get used to the terms and jargon of Wall Street, which is one of the biggest hurdles to cross. Do you know what MBS. CDS. BPS. EBITDA and federal discount rate mean? Regularly reading the financial news throughout college will help you pick up all the basics in due time. Even if you are studying this vocabulary in your courses, reading more about finance will help you to solidify that knowledge and feel more comfortable discussing it. Other ways of picking up financial knowledge are reading investing books, from basic to advanced topics, and reading tutorials and guides from financial websites (looks like you’re already on the right track there). Treat learning the financial language the same as learning a foreign language. Instead of ignoring words that you don’t understand, look those terms up to help broaden your knowledge.

Tip No. 5 – Start Your CFA

As stated earlier, the job market in finance is always very competitive. Many applicants will have high GPAs and degrees from good schools and will have done the things listed above. It is always good to go above and beyond to differentiate yourself from the pack. One way of doing this is to take the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 exam. The CFA designation is well respected in the financial industry. You’ll need to pass three exams and have four years of eligible work experience to obtain the designation, but the first exam can be taken in the final year of a bachelor’s program, either in December or June.

Financial professionals know the amount of time and dedication that the program entails (a minimum of 250 hours of study is recommended per exam), so coming out of an undergraduate program having passed the first exam will certainly make you stand out among other job candidates. The commitment to the program will display your work ethic and dedication to finance.

    The Bottom Line

In both good and bad times, it is difficult for undergraduates to land a good entry-level position. Your resume is going to get lumped in with hundreds of other candidates with strong credentials. The competitive nature of the finance job market means that focusing early, gaining experience with internships, and gaining knowledge from following the news and reading will help you stay at the front of the pack. Finally, doing something to break off from the pack, like entering the CFA program in your final year of college, can better your chances of landing a good job. Work hard and good luck!

A concept that refines an investment s return by measuring how much risk is involved in producing that return, which is generally.

A mutual fund s price per share or exchange-traded fund s (ETF) per-share value. In both cases, the per-share dollar amount.

A company s average payable period. Calculated as: ending accounts payable / (cost of sales/number of days).

An agreement between two parties (known as counterparties) where one stream of future interest payments is exchanged for.

An unsecured, short-term debt instrument issued by a corporation, typically for the financing of accounts receivable, inventories.

A form of short-term borrowing for dealers in government securities.

The Bachelor is an original one hour prime-time reality television series that gives one man and 25 women the unique opportunity to find true love in a most exciting and adventurous way. The Bachelor will get to know the 25 women in a series of fun, exciting and exotic dates that will elicit real and raw emotions. Along the way he must follow a gradual process of elimination, as his initial 25 bachelorettes are narrowed down week by week by presenting them with a single, red rose. In the end, he will ultimately decide on the one woman who captures his heart. However, at any point along the way, should a woman decide that she is no longer interested in The Bachelor, she may reject his invitation to continue dating. If the women decide to stay, some lucky women will meet his family, and he will visit their hometowns for a slice of their life in an effort to determine the woman with whom he is most compatible. The Bachelor provides an in-depth, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the lives of each participant involved in this unique dating process. Prior to the Bachelor, Alex Michel applied for Survivor: Marquesas. He was turned down by the casting directors only after he made it to the top 48 finalists.

ABC was originally leery of The Bachelor because the show’s creator Mike Fleiss was also the creator of Fox’s notorious Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?

On the Women Tell All, Rhonda claimed that her break down on the show was caused by asthma and not a panic attack as reported by paramedics on the scene.

Shannon later guest starred on The Bachelorette, season one, as a friend of Trista.

The morning after the finale, Alex called Trista’s hotel room to check on her after being rejected. To read a transcript of the call, see The Bachelor: Special Edition notes.

    Associate Degree in Marketing Management

An associate degree program can prepare you for entry-level careers in demonstration, promotion and advertising. Schools design their programs to offer a basic understanding of market research, advertising and digital marketing. You may choose from a specialization in industrial sales and marketing or advertising. Marketing requires creativity and solid communication skills; programs place emphasis on creative development and integrated communications. You can expect to take courses in psychology that examine human behavior in the context of buying habits.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros

    • Positions available to associate degree holders paid relatively competitive mean annual salaries in 2011
    • Some programs offer specialization, which provides flexibility and a customized learning experience
    • Some positions require a high school diploma and your degree can influence your marketability

    Cons

    • Programs may not prepare you for a career in marketing management
    • Bachelor’s degree holders will experience the best job prospects for advertising sales positions
    • Some programs do not offer coursework that emphasizes statistics or marketing research concepts

    Common Courses and Requirements

Training in marketing research, promotional trends and visual merchandising is often included in these roughly 60-credit programs. Some programs offer a concentration in sports marketing, digital business, entrepreneurship or professional selling. You may be required to take an internship and apply your knowledge in a supervised, hands-on setting. Following are some common courses offered by these programs:

    • E-commerce marketing
    • Retail management
    • Consumer behavior
    • Services marketing
    • Buying and merchandising
    • International marketing

    Online Degree Info

Online degree programs exist and some schools provide training through a complete online experience. Completing this degree can take 18 to 24 months, depending on your schedule. Distance-education programs usually offer coursework similar to traditional options. Some schools design courses that transfer to a bachelor’s degree program and the curriculum accommodates working professionals.

    Stand Out with This Degree

Experience in sales or customer service can influence access to job opportunities. The BLS reports that advertising sales agents with a proven record of accomplishment in sales techniques will enjoy better job prospects. Following are a few steps you can take to stand out:

    • Take internship opportunities at sales or marketing firms. Gaining experience during your time in school offers the ability to apply your training immediately and consult with your instructors if you have questions about the complexities of sales or marketing.
    • Enroll in customer service classes. If your college offers elective courses in customer service representative – also known as CSR – training, consider enrolling to increase your interaction skills.

    Bachelor’s in Marketing Management

The bachelor’s degree program expands the marketing management education to include product management, distribution and strategic marketing. Schools design programs to deliver training in advanced communication, data analysis and finance. Some schools offer an accelerated degree program that requires applicants to have already earned an associate degree. You can find employment in fields like marketing management, market analysis or business development. Many universities offer enriching campus-based programs, including marketing competitions or access to student chapters of marketing associations.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros

    • Marketing managers – with the appropriate experience – earned a mean annual salary of $126,000*
    • Market research analysts could expect 41% job growth over the 2010-2020 decade**
    • Many programs offer specialization, which provides a highly flexible and tailored learning experience

    Cons

    • Associate degree holders earned mean salaries comparable to bachelor’s degree holders, for example: buyers earned $57,000*
    • Market research analyst positions may require a master’s degree, especially those in leadership
    • You can expect strong competition against experienced specialists and managers for marketing manager, advertising or promotion positions

    Common Courses and Requirements

The bachelor’s degree program may require major preparatory coursework in addition to core and general education courses. You may also take a capstone course and marketing electives to round out the roughly 120 credits required by the program. Some schools require a combination of advanced training, guided marketing classes and free electives. You will take courses in marketing principles, strategic management, sales and distribution management, business finance, brand management, business law and international business.

    Online Degree Info

The online bachelor’s degree program is usually designed for working professionals or people running their own business. Similarly to campus-based programs, online programs require roughly 120 credits in courses. You will study accounting and finance, marketing and communication, business law, ethics and economics. Some schools deliver their online programs in a non-credit format and require the completion of assessments to determine your progress. Keep in mind, this structure may be best suited to those with substantial work experience in the marketing field.

    Stand Out with This Degree

Experience can influence how well you perform in the job market. Employers may prefer candidates who have some experience in sales, promotions or marketing prior to making a job offer. Following are some steps you can take to enhance your marketability:

    • Take courses in digital advertising and marketing. The newspaper publishing industry – one of the top employers of marketing managers – was set to decline by 22% over the 2010-2020 decade, due to the increasing popularity of electronic media. Experience with the languages used in digital advertising – like Flash, Javascript, CSS or HTML – may make job prospects more promising.
