Five Apps

1. SyncDocs

SyncDocs is one of the best ways to synchronize your Google Docs account and your PC. But SyncDocs doesn’t just go one way. This easy to use app allows you to sync any folder (on your PC) to and from your Google Docs account. All files are copied locally (so you don’t have to be on line for access) and files are encrypted on line. SyncDocs also has an option document conversion, which will automatically convert your documents to the Google Doc format. The free version of SyncDocs syncs a limited number of files. For $19.95 USD/year you can get access to unlimited sync (up to 5GB – you can purchase more space as needed).

2. Boomerang

Boomerang is another tool that works in conjunction with a Google account. What Boomerang does is allow you to set up email reminders, schedule the sending of email, set up recurring emails, manage follow-up emails, track email responses, even schedule an email to return to your inbox at a specific interval and request read receipts after the fact. Cloudsave is an extension for the Google Chrome browser that allows you to quickly save a file you’ve bound to your cloud account. Cloudsave supports Dropbox, Google Docs, Box.net, Amazon Cloud Drive, Windows Live SkyDrive, SugarSync, Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and several other services. With a simple right-click, you can have that file uploaded to your cloud account in seconds (without having to save the file to your local drive first). Pleased to iMeet you: a Cloud-based Audio and Video Conferencing Service

Perhaps even less inspiring than a Ben Affleck movie is a pitch from a PR person wanting me to “check out this awesome new audio and video conferencing service.” Admittedly, I wasn’t at all excited to investigate iMeet any further until I read one particular passage in the initial introduction to me: iMeet lets up to 15 people meet face-to-face online from anywhere in the world using their desktop, tablet or smartphone. iMeet is one tool for all your audio, web and video meetings, and it has received several leading industry awards, including the Silver award for New Product Innovation by the internationally renowned 2012 Edison Awards. I still wasn’t convinced to have a look but I was intrigued. If nothing else, it was worth a look so that I could scoff at the attempt to woo me with the prospect of (yawn) a closer inspection of something I didn’t care about at all. I’m a Skype user, after all. It isn’t perfect but I’ve been with it for a while.

However, to my surprise, iMeet is really a superb tool and deserves a look. And, I’m glad I did. In fact, you’re going to be blessed/graced/cursed with watching some videos that I produce with this incredible tool in this column and in my Consumerization column.

iMeet 2.0 release highlights include:

HD Quality Video: iMeet now leverages the most technically advanced H.264 video encoding for HD quality video without consuming huge amounts of network bandwidth.

Spotlight Cube: iMeet users can click on anyone’s cube to enlarge it up to four-times bigger, creating a video conferencing room experience right on the desktop.

Cloud Controls: iMeet ’s new, easy-to-use admin console lets businesses centrally manage, provision and customize large groups of iMeet accounts across the enterprise.

If you’re like me, I’ve been disapointed with video conferencing tools over the years. It seems like if I didn’t spend tens of thousands of dollars on video hardware and software that I just couldn’t produce good talkback interview video. Well, now I can and I can do it cheaply–for about $20 a month. That’s less than my Premium BlogTalkRadio * subscription cost me and it was audio only.

Now, there’s no way, in a static article or in a podcast that I can adequately show you what iMeet can do. It’s hard to describe but I’ll try.

First, iMeet is easy to use. Sean O’Brien, EVP Strategy Communications gave me a demonstration of the meeting software during our interview as I interviewed him. We conducted the entire interview via iMeet. I didn’t have video hooked up or you could have seen the demo that I got during the interview. The next best thing is to have your own demo. Saving that, you can view a video that iMeet created to give you a quick overview.

Second, it does things that I’ve never seen any other video conferencing software do, such as display custom, dynamic backgrounds as you’re talking. Trust me, you have to see it to believe it. You can share files, your desktop and carry on a real time video conferencing over the web as if you had spent thousands or tens of thousands on high-end equipment. And, yet, it works with your built-in laptop camera. Sure, it works with other cameras too but, I’m just saying.

Third, there’s no choppy and weird audio/video syncing problems with iMeet. Sean’s video was absolutely smooth and flawless, just like watching a YouTube video on my desktop. This is one point that I can’t make clear enough. His technology is so advanced that you can have up to 15 simultaneous video conversations in your meeting room. I made some offhanded reference to an old TV show named, Max Headroom. where Max’s video and audio feed would often glitch, repeat and stammer. But, that was part of the mystique of the show. Watch an episode or two. Back then it was kind of cool. Nowadays, it will get on your nerves after a few minutes.

Finally, iMeet is surprisingly inexpensive. For just under $20 per month, you can enjoy the service for yourself. The full price list gives you an overview of the different plans and what each offers you.

There’s also a new feature coming within the next 90 days for those of you who still aren’t convinced: Downloadable video. That’s right. You don’t have to record your own video, further bogging down your system with another heavy application. Their service will provide you a copy of your meeting as part of the service.

One of the best things about iMeet is the fact that it works on any device without any special software download. This means that you can conduct meetings from anywhere and on any operating system or device that has Internet access. And, you can use audio, video or both.

I like the Spotlight feature that allows you to “blow up” a particular user’s video session allowing you to view full 1080p video from that user.

If you compare iMeet to Skype, which I currently use for my interviews and podcasts, Skype’s video is choppy. My fellow ZDNetizens, Scott Raymond and Jason Perlow, and I setup a Skype video conference one evening to check out the possibilities. It worked but not so well. It left a lot to be desired actually.

We really wanted and needed an iMeet experience. If we were to repeat the video conferencing idea, I would use iMeet.

One last thing. To connect to a live meeting requires nothing more than a browser. No remembering a conference phone number. No conference code. No fumbling around with dialing at all. Click on the simple link that someone provides you, have the iMeet service call your phone and presto, you’re in the conference. Basically, two clicks and you’re in. You never have to be late for another conference, no matter where you are–even if you’re stuck in traffic on your way to the meeting.

Seriously. The best way to see what iMeet has to offer you is to take a look for yourself. I, personally, am impressed. And, that’s not easy to do. As I said earlier, I didn’t want to look but am glad that I did. I think I must have sounded like a comic book freak watching The Avengers for the first time with the number of “Wows” I gave it.

Who knew that someone could take something as nap-inducing as audio and video conferencing software and make it geeky-cool. iMeet has succeeded where many other have failed. I’m thinking that if I could get phone recordings off of the service (and I forgot to ask) that I might dump Skype forever.

Understanding Licensing, Affiliations, and Agencies

Licensing

The most asked question in regard to entering the travel industry is, Do I need a license to be a travel agent?

Currently, Hawaii, California, Nevada, Ohio, Florida and Oregon have requirements for travel agents to register, post bonds, or contribute to a state restitution fund.

Most other states have no special licensing required in order to sell travel products. Check with your local state business offices to check for specific requirements.

Just like opening any other business, you will probably have to register a business name with your city or county. Again, simply check with your local taxing authority to determine what documents you will need to do business in your city.

Affiliations

Most travel vendors and suppliers (aka – cruise lines, tour operators, all-inclusive resorts, etc.),will require that you have certain affiliations or credentials before they will allow you to sell their products.

The main credentialing agencies are ARC, CLIA, and IATA. Each of these organizations require proof of sales volume or industry experience in order to issue their credentials.

Newcomers to the industry may not be able to obtain these affiliations and credentials until they have been in the business for 1-2 years.

So, if you are not able to get these credentials until you have been in the business, but can’t do business until you have the credentials, how do you actually get into the travel industry?

There are basically two paths into the travel industry.

Agencies

The first way to enter the travel industry is by working for an existing agency. This will give you time to learn and sell travel, but will also limit your ability to

earn top commissions and experience the freedom of working your own hours and owning your own business.

The second, and most common way for individuals to establish their own travel business and gain access to all of the related benefits of ARC, CLIA, and IATA affiliations

is to function as an Independent Contractor with a good Host Agency.

What is a Host Agency?

The Host Agency provides you, the Independent Contractor, an easier entry into the travel business by sharing the benefits of

the host s travel industry conference appointments, ARC-CLIA-IATA, which require bonding, years of industry work experience, testing and continuing education.

The host agency also provides access to continuing training programs; office technical support, backup, industry travel vendor contacts etc. to enable you to spend

productive time in developing sales and earning the majority of commission (70%) for your efforts. The host also provides invoicing, ticketing, booking knowledge, and

This classic lesson shows that if we can swallow our pride, have some humility and begin to take proper action that God will not make too tough a time for us. In fact he will meet us half way and take us back into his house and restore our life.

    Home Based Travel Agent Education and Training Opportunities

    This is probably one of the most important topics on this website and I am going to give you the straight scoop regarding your travel industry education and training. I have made millions in the travel industry while others with advanced degrees have failed. Don t get me wrong, I believe that any educational experience is meaningful. It is just that if you are going to spend money learning, don t you want to spend it in the direction where you will get the highest return for your investment?

    In your search for information you will run across many sites that promise to train you to become a travel agent. They try to convince you that there is some magic to processing a reservation and that they have insider information that will be conveyed to make you a super-star travel agent when you have completed the training. That is such bunk. Understand, I am not trying to sell you anything (unless you buy my books). In fact, I am going to give you access to the same, or better training with nominal or no cost. It is up to you to make your mind up as to the value of it.

    In today s world the skill-set that is required to succeed has little to do with the content offered in most travel training courses. In today s world, clients want detailed destination and product knowledge and not much else. As an example, If you go to a travel school to learn how to book cruises, rather than take cruises to familiarize yourself with the particular cruise lines, ships and ports, you offer very little value to the client. Anyone can book a cruise on-line now, it is the specific information about the lines, ships and ports that clients seek. The only way to get this information is to research it and then validate your research by experiencing the product as a passenger. By participating in these training courses, you are perceived to be more credible with the community that offers them and are much more likely to gain any promotional benefits that might be available.

    The web has eliminated the operations side of a travel agent s work and leaves him or her with the specific knowledge that they use to advise his or her clients. Product knowledge is the key to your success and don t let anyone tell you differently. You are much better off taking a cruise or a trip to a destination that you sell than going to school or getting some professional designation . Of course, the very best scenario is to study the product in advance of experiencing it and there are many opportunities to do so.
