Becoming a work-at-home travel agent might be your ideal work-at-home career path!

Working as a travel agent might seem a little outdated in today’s world of Kayak and Airbnb, but in reality, many people still prefer to work with travel agents. Why? Experienced travel coordinators help travelers save money, time, and all kinds of travel-related headaches.

Home-based travel agents generally work for a host agency (a company bonded and accredited by the Airlines Reporting Corporation or the International Airlines Travel Agents Network) as an independent contractor. You can also work as part of a consortium or a franchise, but as a beginning agent, a host agency offers the oversight, access, and background you’ll need to be successful.

As a travel agent, you’ll collect a commission on the arrangements you book, and you’ll often have access to special deals. You can choose to work in a certain industry or work with specific businesses or a large corporation, or you might even assist clients looking into a particular type of travel (cruises, Disney vacations, etc.).

Home-based travel agents make an average of $31,056/year, but the wage ranges can vary between $8,000/year to $80,000/year. It all depends on your experience, the number of clients of you retain, hours worked, and commission and support from your host agency.

Agents who work in specific markets or on specific vacation types (like destination weddings or luxury travel) can become very familiar with their market, and thus, enjoy even greater success. Working in particular markets, like weddings or corporate travel can also make a big difference regarding salary.

For example, do you prefer a large agency or a small agency? Locally based hosting can be easier for new agents who might need support and training, whereas national agencies offer more regarding flexibility and growth.

Magazines, guidebooks, and websites are often looking for freelance travel writers to contribute their experiences and give readers recommendations. If you have writing and communication skills, and you travel often, this might be a great option for you.

The income for travel writers varies of course, but many writers are able to make great money by documenting and sharing their travels. Freelance writers, according to PayScale can make an average of $38,000 per year.

If you prefer to try your hand at your own travel blog, you can also make money by setting up affiliates and directing traffic to your blog by marketing for like-minded and travel-focused companies. Setting up your blog is easy, and it’s a great way to share your travels with the world!

There are other home-based travel jobs you can do too, especially if you have the expertise or a preference for particular types of travel. For example, you can become a cruise coordinator, where you work with companies like Cruise Planners in a home-based franchise. Cruise Planners can make around 14-21% commission (think between $490-$735 for just one booking)!

You can also become a local coordinator for exchange students, in which you earn a small stipend for helping exchange students find a place to stay and get settled. Typically these contractors work with local organizations like schools and churches to find and help students interested in exchange programs.

If you love to travel and you’re looking for ways to earn money from home, there are plenty of opportunities to take your travel beyond Instagram snaps and shares on Facebook … but if you’re really great at social media, you could also become a social media manager in the travel industry! Many of these positions allow you to work from home for a travel-based company, sharing posts and connecting with their customers.

Do I Need A Travel Agent License or Certification, becoming a

Do I Need A Travel Agent License?

One of the most frequent questions I get comes from people thinking they need to get a license or pass a test to become a home-based travel agent. These are fairly typical:

How do I get my travel agent license?

In order to be a full-fledged travel agent do you need to be licensed or certified or take a test?

Only one state, Rhode Island, had something they referred to as a license. But it was really just a requirement to register and post a bond. And Rhode Island repealed the law that required that license in June of 2010.

So there really is no such thing as a travel agent license if by license you mean having to pass some sort of state-administered test, like you do when you apply for a driver s license.

However, some local governments (counties, towns, cities, etc.) might have license provisions for those operating a home-based business. This is more in the nature of a tax than a license (in the driver s license sense of the word). The local municipality uses ordinances like this to keep tabs on who s operating businesses in residential neighborhoods.

This is pretty much a formality and you shouldn t be worried that the local powers that be will tell you that you can t run your business. Their main concern is that you don t start a manufacturing business that might involve dangerous chemicals or processes, or a retail business that might bring a steady stream of cars and customers to your house, thus compromising the residential character of the neighborhood. And, of course, they get some more money for the municipal coffers.

Regulations like this are not a universal rule. There is a very good chance your local area has no such regulation. There is no such requirement in New York City, which is one of the most heavily taxed and regulated business environments in the country. (Sssh! Don t tell them!)

If your local government has such a rule, you should abide by it (although I suspect that many home-business operators don t out of ignorance or otherwise and the local authorities are none the wiser). Check with your local Chamber of Commerce; they should be able to tell you all about local ordinances. And don t worry about it. Like I say, it s just a formality and it shouldn t cost you all that much.

What About Travel Agent Certification?

Likewise, you do not have to be certified as a travel agent to become a home-based travel agent. Now there are several travel agent certification programs out there, most notably those operated by The Travel Institute, but that is something else entirely. Seeking travel agent certification and becoming a certified travel agent is a matter of professional pride, not a must-have to become a travel agent.

Some host agencies only want to deal with agents who have experience. So if you ve just graduated from a travel school, you may have a certificate but no experience. Other host agencies won t deal with rank beginners but will deal with recent travel school graduates; in this case a certificate can be helpful. Some host agencies will require that you have some form of travel agent certification (like that from the Travel Institute) to qualify for a higher commission split without paying a fee.

Many, many host agencies, however, including the vast majority listed in my home study course, will sign you up pretty much no questions asked. No travel agent certification required. No travel agent license needed

Another thing that can seem something like a license or certificate is the fictitious name certificate, which is called different things in different places. Essentially, it s a legal formality that allows you to cash checks written to your business name. Let s take the case of Sue Jones and her home-based travel business, called Travel With Sue. Now the bank will not deposit a check made out to Travel With Sue into Sue Jones personal account. The solution? Sue registers her business name at the town hall or county court house (for a fee of course), gets her fictitious name certificate for Travel With Sue, takes it to the bank and opens a business account in the name Travel With Sue.

Again, this is a formality (a bit like a tax, too). You don t have to pass a test or get a travel agent license to do this.

Some states (California and Florida among them) have laws that require travel agents to register. Again, these are not true licensing laws. In my opinion they are a misguided form of taxation on travel agents that lets the state pretend it is protecting the interests of consumers. You don t need to pass a test to register under these laws; all the state wants is your money. So these laws have nothing to do with a real travel agent license, travel agent certification, or becoming a certified travel agent.

Becoming an independent travel agent can still be a very profitable business to consider. According to a study by ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents), and NACTA ((National Association of Career Travel Agents), 57 percent of independent travel agents saw an increase in sales in 2010, even with the downturned economy.

The study from ASTA and NACTA also concludes that:

Developing a niche specialty of travel, such as cruise sales, can be one of the most important factors in developing a travel business. A successful agent needs to develop knowledge and experience about some aspect of travel. The study also shows that most independent agents do not use a GDS, which is important to have in order to sell airline tickets. An inexperienced agent can sell a cruise with some basic training and cruise vacation experiences. But to sell airline tickets efficiently requires experience and more training.

Needless to say agents with more experience, knowledge, and salesmanship should have an easier time of developing a profitable home based travel business.

Some essential characteristics to look for in a host agency:

  • Does the company offer agent support, including accounting, technical, marketing and commission tracking?
  • Look for high vendor commissions. Host travel agencies earn commissions from vendors based upon the number of annual sales and other negotiated factors.
  • High agent/host agency commission ratio. Host agencies divide commissions with agents, but some also charge monthly fees or other agent charges.
  • Check to see what training programs are offered by the host agency.
  • What GDS booking systems does the host agency use? Is it a system the agent is already familiar with, or is GDS training provided as well?
  • Are marketing opportunities offered?
  • Does the host agency offer internet sales, or a web site ?
  • Check which travel companies the agency is partnered with. Many agencies have preferred vendors that have higher negotiated commissions that also have an above average reputation.
  • Does the agency belong to ASTA, CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association ), IATA (International Air Transport Association), NACTA ?
  • Does the agency give agents referrals to potential clients?
  • Who keeps track of sales and commissions? Does the agency give an agent a sales report?
  • How often does the host agency pay the agents?
  • What type of invoicing and record keeping is the agent required to do?
  • Is the agent required to pay for error and omission insurance or bonding?
  • What office equipment is required by the host agency?

Advantages and benefits as an independent travel agent:

  • Earn travel discounts for hotel stay, car rentals. cruises, and tours.
  • Be your own boss and work at your own schedule. Although this sounds pretty dreamy, many clients think that if an agent works from home, that makes them available any day at any hour. Hours should be set and adhered to as much as possible, unless unrestricted work hours are offered as an extra benefit the agent presents to their clients.
  • Learn more about world geography and cultures.
  • Home based agents are often eligible for some travel expense and home tax deductions .
  • Possibility to make a profitable career doing a job you enjoy.
  • Ability to network with others in the travel workforce.

Since individuals do not require travel agency experience to be an independent travel agent, there are hundreds of companies that offer to be host agencies for beginners. Before signing on with a company who presents an enticing website or tries to sell a package to become a travel agent, ask a lot of questions and see in writing what benefits will be received as an agent, and what expenses the agent will be responsible for. Check with reputable local travel agencies to see what they require to begin as an independent travel agent.

Education Requirements

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that most plumbers are trained through apprenticeships, because these programs offer the most comprehensive training in the field (www.bls.gov ). Apprenticeships may be available through local branches of contractor organizations and unions, like the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry. Programs generally last 4 to 5 years and combines classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training.

In-Class Instruction

Classroom training generally lasts between 500 and 750 hours. Coursework begins with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety training courses. First-year requirements may also include completing first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Thereafter, apprentices take courses in mathematics, blueprint reading and plumbing basics, including instruction on pipes, valves and fittings. Intermediate courses in apprenticeship programs often cover a host of topics ranging from gas lines to bathtubs.

On-the-Job Training

Most apprenticeships require completing 7,500 to 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. Working with journeymen and master plumbers, apprentices learn to cut holes in studs, walls and floors, as well as install piping and fixtures. They’re trained to use soldering irons and power tools, like reciprocating saws. Additionally, apprentices receive instruction in plumbing and building codes, dealing with clients and answering questions for inspectors.

Licensing

Once formal training is complete, apprentices become journeymen plumbers. Most states require journeymen plumbers to be licensed. Although requirements vary, the BLS reports that most states require 2 to 5 years of experience and successful completion of a state board examination. Continuing education is generally required in order to keep the license current.

Career and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates a faster than average job growth for plumbers, steamfitters and pipefitters during the years 2014 through 2024. These workers earned $50,620 as a median annual wage in 2015, according to the BLS.

Individuals planning to enter this rapidly-growing career field can take related vocational courses in high school to prepare for their career. After high school, aspiring plumbers are trained through a 4-5 year apprenticeship program that combines classroom work with hands-on experience. Most states then require journeyman plumbers to meet experience requirements and pass a competency exam for licensing.
