How Do Tax Deductions Work When Donating a Car? TurboTax Tax

How Do Tax Deductions Work When Donating a Car?

Updated for Tax Year 2016

Donating your car to charity can result in significant tax savings if you include it in your charitable contribution deduction. However, doing a little planning will ensure that you maximize the tax savings of your donation. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires you to calculate your deduction in one of two ways, depending on how the charity uses your donation. Deductions for cars the charity sells are limited to the sales price. In all other cases, you can use the car’s fair market value.

Step 1: Find out how much the charity sold the car for

Use the price the charity obtains for your car in a sale as the amount of your deduction. For example, if the charity sells the car at auction for $3,000, your deduction is limited to $3,000, even if the fair market value is $4,500. However, if the charity sells the car at a discount to a needy individual or keeps the car for its own internal use, then you can claim a deduction for its fair market value.

Step 2: Determine the car s fair market value

The IRS suggests that you use a reputable used-car price guide to calculate your deduction when using fair market value. For example, go to your local library and obtain a recent copy of the Kelley Blue Book. Search the private party prices for your vehicle based on its make, model and overall condition. This type of search can be done on the Internet as well.

Step 3: Claiming the deduction

Report the amount of your deduction on line 17 of Schedule A. Since you can only claim a deduction for your car donation if you itemize, the total of all your eligible expenses on Schedule A must exceed the standard deduction amount for your filing status.

If you use TurboTax to prepare your taxes, we ll help you determine which filing status will get you the biggest tax savings.

Step 4: Additional forms you ll need

Complete Form 8283 if your car donation deduction is more than $500. If your deduction is between $501 and $5,000, you must complete Section A. If your deduction is greater than $5,000, you must complete Section B. If you complete Section B, you must also obtain a written appraisal as documentation.

Again, if you use TurboTax, we ll ask simple questions and fill in all the right forms for you.

  • If the charity sells your car sells for $500 or less, you can deduct $500 or your car s fair market value, whichever is less. For example, if your car is valued at $650 but sells for $350, you can deduct $500.
  • Most charities will report the sales price of your car to you on Form 1098-C.
  • You must have documentation of your donation. At a minimum, the documentation you receive from the charity must include your name, the vehicle identification number, the date of your donation and a statement describing the goods and services you received, if any.

The Best Canadian Credit Card With Travel Rewards

Is a weaker Canadian dollar clipping travellers’ wings? Would-be vacationers could find themselves paying 30 per cent more for their warm-weather getaways this year. As the Loonie hovers around US$0.75, three-quarters admit the weak currency has impacted their trip plans.

But cash-strapped travelers needn’t settle for a staycation, as a number of travel rewards credit cards can effectively offset travel costs.

However, using plastic to fund a vacation can be a point of confusion. While there are a number of fantastic travel offers available in today’s market, many Canadians aren’t aware of travel rewards best practices, and there continue to be misconceptions around the true value of rewards, and how to effectively earn and redeem them.

Tips for Using a Travel Rewards Credit Card

Seek out the perfect plastic. There is a wide variety of travel rewards programs to choose from and each offers a different earning and redemption structure. It’s important to determine whether a card’s earning potential can be maximized based on your specific spending habits — for example, gas and grocery purchases, or earning on all spending.

Heed the fee.
Travel rewards cards are often packed with additional insurance, concierge and lounge benefits — and that means the majority charge an annual fee. Look for cards that waive this charge for a limited promotional period, and determine whether your annual earnings offset the fee amount. For those who are fee adverse, a non-fee card with a lower earning threshold can be a better fit.

Ask about redemption.
Those points won’t do much good if they’re grounded during your desired departure season. Seat capacity, seasonal, and minimum redemption restrictions are common pitfalls vacationers should be aware of. For the greatest flexibility, look for cards that allow points to be redeemed directly on travel purchases charged on the card.

Cover yourself.
Many travel cards come with built-in insurance benefits — but you shouldn’t assume you’re covered. At a bare minimum, ensure you have sufficient travel medical and accident insurance for yourself, spouse and any dependents travelling with you. Add-ons like trip interruption, delay and cancellation coverage can provide greater peace of mind on your journey.

GAP TRAVEL

The Ultimate Gap Travel Resource Website

In the past decade gap travel has grown faster than any other type of travel.

Whereas in 2001 there were just a handful of gap travel providers, now in 2011 there are getting on for 100 gap travel organisations, and many of these are handling thousands of travelling customers every year.

Gap Travel has grown because taking a gap year or gap break has become the norm for young people leaving school or university. Now, with tuition fees presenting a financial threat to potential university students, and with the current poor employment prospects, many young people are thinking that they may just as well take a gap trip.

Older people too are taking gap travel journeys. Most do not take a full year, and so the term gap year is being replaced by gap trip, or better…gap travel.

People who take gap travel journeys are often referred to as gappers or gap travellers.

Gap Travel can mean a journey lasting anything from a few weeks to a few years and there are many great  destinations available to people go on their gap travels, from Alaska to Zimbabwe. There are numerous possibilities of things to do and accomplish on a gap trip.

It is important that students who are planning to go to university, or find a job upon their return, do something worthwhile on their gap travels, such as volunteering or undertaking paid work, or learning new skills such as how to sail or how to speak a foreign language. A gap trip spent simply having fun will not impress the university  admissions people or the employers nearly as much as a well structured and useful gap travel journey..

Most people decide where to go on their gap travels first, then look at options for activities in the countries that they plan to visit, and there are lots of gap travel options, such as adventure travel, volunteering with local communities or with wildlife or conservation, paid work, learning new skills, learning a new language, taking tours and much more.

We hope that this website will give you ideas about where you can go and what you can go on your gap travel journey.

How To Save On A Last-Minute Spring Break

Mar 11, 2013 | Updated May 11, 2013

U.S. News Travel U.S. News World Report Travel

With spring break just around the corner, many of us are itching to escape the winter doldrums. But with the mid-semester recess inspiring swarms of students to swap textbooks for beach chairs and families to trade weekend jaunts for extended trips, it seems the window to score an attractive deal is quickly closing. Plus, there’s another hurdle for procrastinators this year: Easter falls at the end of March, prompting more people than usual to travel during this busy shoulder season.

Never fear: There’s still time to squeeze in an affordable last-minute retreat. Whether you’re looking for an isolated beach resort or a bustling city, there are still plenty of places where your wallet can balance your wanderlust. With some help from Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. and Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com. U.S. News Travel has identified some clever ways to save big on spur-of-the-moment spring travel.

Tip 1. Keep Your Dates Flexible

It probably comes as no surprise that the more flexible you are in your travel plans, the better your chances are of nabbing reduced airfares. According to Klee, bargain-hunters should look for flights that depart before or after the weekend rush. Consider traveling on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday; taking off on these days will yield better odds of scoring discounted fares, which can “make a huge difference” in overall vacation costs, says Klee. Bason also warns budget-minded travelers to be wary of holiday season price hikes. Because Easter overlaps with spring break season this year, the price for a plane seat is likelier to be more expensive than usual. To maximize savings, Bason suggests planning your vacation so that it doesn’t coincide with the holiday.

Tip 2. Set Your Sights on the City

While throngs of college students migrate to the pearly white sands of Cancún and Miami Beach. urban retreats have a lower springtime demand and often yield excellent airfare and hotel deals. “The big cities tend to be more immune to the spike hike,” explained Klee. In fact, according to Travelzoo. popular cities like New York City and Chicago are seeing hotel and airfare discounts of up to 40 to 50 percent compared to other times of the year. If you’re looking for a vibrant city retreat without extravagant price tags, consider traveling to the Windy City; Hotwire.com experts report that average Chicago hotel rate between March 22 and March 31 has dropped 28 percent compared to 2012. Other metro areas like Philadelphia. Washington D.C.. and Toronto also boast reduced room rates.

Tip 3. Search Alternative Airports

An easy way to reduce the exorbitant cost of flying is expanding your flight search to alternative hubs. Departing from a secondary airport can tender drastically discounted fares. Both Klee and Bason recommend considering all airports within a reasonable distance of your intended arrival and departure destinations. And though he points out that flight costs will vary significantly depending on your desired destination, Bason insists that it’s best to conduct separate searches for more than one combination of airports: “[You] never know what combination of airport or weekday is going to get you the very best deal.” Just be sure that you’re ready to book when the perfect price comes along. “Don’t assume that you could go home, talk about it with your family and go back the next day and buy it,” Klee advised.

Tip 4. Hop across the pond

As winter-weary travelers start to thaw from a long and dreary winter, thoughts shift to Europe. And, rightfully so: While you’ll likely run into crowds, you can expect to find plenty of affordable hotel rooms (not to mention blossoming spring flowers). “If you have a full week off, it’s definitely worth a look,” said Klee, noting that airfares from the U.S. to Europe are around 30- to 40-percent cheaper than they are in the summer. Last-minute airfare deals to tourist hot spots like Paris. Madrid. and Amsterdam abound in March and April. And according to Bason, deals on luxury hotels are easy to find, too. “Europe is in the middle of a recession right now, and it’s not their high season yet,” noted Bason. It may be a trek to get there, but Bason insists that shoulder-season prices are low enough for you to enjoy four- or five-star accommodations every night. For particularly excellent lodging deals, turn your attention to destinations like London. Berlin. and Istanbul .

Tip 5. Stay Connected

Nowadays, savvy travelers have access to a handful of resourceful smartphone apps that allow vacation-seekers to track and book flights and hotel rooms while on the go. Bason recommends using apps like Expedia.com’s ASAP (A Sudden Amazing Price) and Hotwire.com ‘s free planning tools, which allow you to do everything from tracking lowest airfares to monitoring specific destinations for price drops. That way, you’ll never miss a price drop or a flash sale. Another website Bason has on his radar: Red Week. a marketplace for travelers looking to rent their timeshares. Owners will often lower rates significantly on their timeshares as the deadline to rent approaches, explains Bason. And though you’ll have to track the deals yourself, “the savings are out of this world.” Another excellent (and free) app worth checking out for those most interested in scoring discounted airfares is OnTheFly by ITA Software. which pinpoints the best flight available by cross-checking dates, airlines, arrival and departure destinations, and prices.

Tip 6. Trade Sun for Snow

Those who swap a dreamy beach resort for a cozy ski retreat can save big on springtime travel. Bason recommends checking out cities like Denver. Salt Lake City. and Vancouver. which lure procrastinating powder hounds with end-of-season mark-downs. If fresh powder still blankets the slopes, you can spend your days tackling the snow-capped mountains. If the snowfall is limited, you can carve out some time for meandering through Denver, Salt Lake City, and Vancouver’s ambient downtown areas–all of which boast a bevy of museums, restaurants, and shops. But the west isn’t the only place to score a deal. According to Travelzoo. you can also save up to 50 percent on Vermont hotels over this popular spring travel period.

How to Pay the Lowest Hotel Prices PERIOD:

Paying the proper Hotel Price goes a long way toward making your hotel stay a good experience. Like air plane seats, there are several prices for the same hotel room .

Associations such as AAA and AARP, as BookingWiz have mentioned in the past, can afford some savings, but there are many other ways to save on Hotel Rooms .

Most travelers are unaware of Advanced Purchase Savings. Many of the top Hotel Chains allow individual properties to post advanced purchase rates for rooms. Generally, these hotel rates are not chain wide so you really have to look at all the offerings to find them. The trick is to remember that the key word is PURCHASE. If you are not 100% firm in your plans, these prepaid plans are NOT for you since you pay in full when you book these non-refundable hotel rates.

The next best hotel rates are commonly called Internet Rates. Usually these can be cancelled but pay attention to the cancel by date which may be one or two days prior to arrival as opposed to the cancel by 6 PM day of arrival that you see with most rates.
