Cheapest Days to Fly and Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets,

Cheapest Days to Fly and Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets

We all want the cheapest flights possible and that s what this guide is all about: Finding the cheapest days to fly and getting the best deals on airfare. Comparison shopping is a big help and so is knowing when to buy tickets and the best days to fly. There are lots of other ways to save, too, so let s get started.

    1. Shop on Tuesday

Best day to shop: The best time to book a U.S. flight is usually Tuesday at about 3 p.m. eastern time. Many airlines release weekly airfare sales in the early morning hours of Tuesday, and by mid-afternoon, competing airlines have matched sale prices. In other words, shoppers now have the most deals to choose from.

    2. Don t Shop too Early or too Late

Careful! Buy too early and you could pay too much. Buy too late and you could pay way too much. The sweet spot for deals is usually found in the following shopping windows.

U.S. tickets: Shop between 3 months and 30 days before departure.

International tickets: Shop between 5 ½ months and 1 ½ months before departure.

Popular times to fly: For peak travel periods such as June, July and August; Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Year s; and other holiday dates, purchase tickets two months in advance.

    3. Always Compare Airfare

The golden rule of shopping: Always compare airfares. Some folks don t because they know their favorite airline always has the best deal, but no airline always has the cheapest prices, not Spirit, not Southwest, not every single time, and we’ve proved this. If you don’t compare, you could pay too much and why pay a penny more than you have to?

    Buy airline tickets

Tip:Set a FareCompare airfare alert and we ll do the work for you! Signing up for alerts only takes a second and the deals come to you. If you see one you like, act fast; the best deals don’t last.

    4. Cheapest Days to Fly

Save even more by knowing the cheapest days to fly. If you can t book cheap days for your entire flight, do it for one leg of the trip and you ll still see some savings.

Cheap days: In the U.S., Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday are usually cheapest. For international travel, weekdays are usually cheaper than weekends.

Expensive days: Fridays and Sundays usually cost more, especially in the U.S.

Cheap times of day: Fly when most people don’t want to, so cheap times include dawn, overnight and flights around the lunch and dinner hour.

Tip: We can help you find the cheapest days from your city with the Getaway Map. Just type in your hometown, click the month or season you d like the fly, and deals to destinations around the world fill the screen.

    5. Fly the Cheapest Route

Non-stops vs. connecting flights: Non-stops are more convenient but you can sometimes find much better deals on connecting flights with savings up to 50%. Always compare the price of a non-stop with a connecting flight before you ding your credit card, and only you can decide if a cheaper price is worth the inconvenience of a longer travel day.

    6. Book Group Travel One Ticket at a Time

This won t always save money, but it could so it s always worth a try.

How to shop: When booking travel for two or more people, book just one ticket to start because a quirk in airline reservation systems means multiple tickets sold in a single transaction must be the same price. For example, say you need two tickets and the airline has one for $100 while all the others are $125. Unfortunately, the two tickets you buy in a single transaction will cost you $125 each. However, if you buy those tickets one-at-a-time, you ll pay $100 for one, $125 for the other.

    Want More Great Advice?

We keep an eye on airfare sales and frequently post them to Facebook and Twitter. Tips, too. We d love it if you joined us. Happy travels!

CheapAir now offers monthly payments for airline tickets – Aug, buy

You can now buy airline tickets with monthly payments

    Buy airline tickets

Dreaming of a vacation, but don’t have the cash for the airfare? You can now pay for your plane tickets in monthly installments. has teamed up with financial services company Affirm to allow fliers to take out three, six and 12-month purchase plans to cover their airfare.

Here’s how it works: After selecting flights on CheapAir, customers can choose to make monthly payments on the checkout page. They have to provide their name, email and street addresses, date of birth, cellphone number and the last four digits of their Social Security number to help Affirm run a credit check. The check will not affect a customer’s credit score.

“Affirm approves applicants who can afford to repay us responsibly, and we make the experience totally transparent by charging simple interest and no penalties or fees — people know up front exactly what they’ll pay,” said Max Levchin, founder and CEO of Affirm in a statement to CNNMoney.”

The interest rate on the loans are based on credit worthiness and range from 10%-30% APR.

The average APR on new credit card offers was 15.19% last week, according to Weekly Credit Card Rate Report.

Travelers will get approval within seconds, according to CEO Jeff Klee, and there’s no limit on how many tickets you can request financing for. But financing is only available for tickets that are $100 or more.

The new payment method is aimed at travelers who don’t have a credit card or can’t afford their trip.

“When you want to take a vacation, it’s a lot of money to put up out front and you might not be able to manage it all at once,” said Klee. “Spreading it out . makes it become more easy to manage.”

Klee said CheapAir has been “aggressive” about embracing payment alternatives to credit cards. The website also allows customers to pay with Bitcoin and cash through Western Union.

“Anything that competes with credit cards I think is a good thing,” he said. “This is one more option, and the more options, the better.”

Despite more travelers hitting the skies, airfare prices have been dropping recently thanks to lower fuel costs and more capacity. Airlines have been expanding their routes and adding flights in the wake of lower oil prices.

Airfare prediction app Hopper expects airfare will continue its descent this fall, with domestic tickets decreasing 8.2% to hit $213 in October.

    Airline Miles Facts

How to Buy Airline Ticket Vouchers #travel #to #israel

    #travel vouchers

    Things You’ll Need

    Computer with Internet access

    Secure online payment source

Determine how much the flight you plan to take is going to cost. Do a quick search of online travel sites; you don’t want to buy a travel voucher for $500 when your flight is going to cost less.

Log on to a searchable auction or sale website. Type in “airline voucher” in the search box and browse the results. Double-check that a particular airline has a flight that goes to your intended destination. Make sure the seller’s voucher is transferable, meaning one person can give the voucher to another. An honest seller will provide this important detail; without it, you won’t be able to use the voucher. Check the expiration date of the voucher; most are good for one year and you don’t want to buy one that is near its expiration.

Use a secure online payment site to purchase the voucher. Using a reputable option guarantees your purchase. If the voucher is for some reason not honored, you may have recourse to get your money back.

Book your flight as soon as possible to avoid expiration dates. Each airline has different rules on where you can redeem vouchers, but as a guideline you likely won’t be able to book your flight on a booking site when using a voucher. Generally, you can only use vouchers when you book over the phone with an airline or at an airline ticket office.

A jet comes in for landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on April 15, 2008. less

The best day to buy cheap airline tickets

    Q. I’m buying airline tickets for the holiday and heard there was a certain time it was best to buy. Do you know what that is?

    A. For a long time, everyone said Tuesday afternoon was the sweet spot. That’s when the airlines adjust their prices to match whatever deal another airline ran on Monday. And it’s still good advice. However, researchers recently found that weekends are overall the best time to buy. Also, the day you fly makes a big difference, with Tuesday being the least expensive. Sites like Matrix. Bing Travel and AirfareWatchdog can help you find cheap flights or predict when prices are going to be the cheapest.

    Safe banking on the go

    Q. I travel a lot and do my banking on the go. Is it safe to bank on public Wi-Fi?

    A. The answer is a firm “no.” You could be on the same Wi-Fi network as hackers. Even with security measures in place, they can still nab your usernames and passwords. So, reserve using sensitive sites for home or use your cellular connection. Also, on a smartphone or tablet, using a bank’s app — if it has one — is safer than using its website.

    Spot a stolen smartphone

    Q. I’m buying a used smartphone, but I’m worried it might be stolen. How can I check?

    A. Well, one giveaway is a price that’s way too low. Check out Movaluate or WorthMonkey to see how much the seller should be charging. You should also check the phone’s ESN or IMEI number. This is usually found under the battery. A site like Swappa can tell you if the phone has been reported stolen or has some other activation problem. You can also call the phone’s carrier and ask.

    Cool features in iOS 7

    Q. I saw something on Facebook that said updating to iOS 7 will make my iPhone waterproof. That’s a joke, right?

    A. Definitely. A software update can’t change hardware like that. But iOS 7 does come with some cool new features you’ll like. For example, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center. This holds a bunch of settings that used to be hidden away. You can easily turn Wi-Fi on or off, fire up the new flashlight feature or tap the half-moon icon to put your phone in Do Not Disturb mode.

    Antivirus on a Mac

    Q. I was told not to put antivirus software on my Mac, but I thought I’d double-check. Is that right?

    A. I’m glad you did. Whoever told you that isn’t giving out good advice. There are more threats appearing that target Macs. One like the recent “Kumar in the Mac” could bypass your Mac’s built-in security. Without third-party security software, you’re a sitting duck for something like that. Both Sophos and Avira have free security software for Mac. You can start there, or look up other major security company’s products.

    Should You Buy Travel Insurance?

With the state of the airlines and not to mention the world more people are buying travel insurance

Would I buy travel insurance? No but I am beginning to think that it is not such a bad idea. I am the kind of person who thinks that nothing is going to go wrong ever, and then I have to deal with it when it does. The only reason I have health insurance is because I have a daughter and to take myself off would not save me that much. The only reason I have car insurance is because liability is required by law and I have a nice car and I don’t feel like buying a new one if I crash it and actually it is kind of irresponsible to not have car insurance. But recently I got an e-mail that made me realize that I should be recommending travel insurance. To read it check out

But should you buy travel insurance if you are taking a trip to Greece? Why not? It is cheap enough and there are a number of things that can go wrong that travel insurance will make a lot less painful.

Besides covering flight cancellations at a time when airlines are more unstable than ever (not that they will crash but they may go out of business) travel insurance also covers trip cancellation due to:

    *Sickness Injury or Death*

    *Weather conditions*

    *Termination of Employment*

    *Acts of Terrorism*

    *Trip Cancellation Interruption*

Southwest Airlines: Best Time to Buy Cheap Airline Tickets #cheap #airline

    #best price airline tickets

Southwest Airlines: Best Time to Buy Cheap Airline Tickets

But what about specific discount carriers like the popular Southwest Airlines. Here s what you need to know to get the cheapest airline tickets with Southwest Airlines.

    Always Compare Prices

Before you buy, check with an airfare comparison shopping site to be sure you re getting the best price. If you go to any individual airline site to shop, you may miss out on better deals.

    Southwest s Click-n-Save Specials

Southwest files its Click-n-Save specials every Monday night in the 8pm domestic airfare distribution (there are 3 domestic airfare distributions each weekday: 10am, 1pm and 8pm), and it hits their reservation system in the wee hours of the morning the next day.

    Tuesday Mornings

So Tuesday morning is one of the best times to shop, but there are some caveats these specials typically include limited routes that Southwest wants to try and fill up, seat-wise for particular travel days. In other words, it is not (usually) an across-the-board sale.

    Competitor Matching

Southwest normally matches competitors sales (which are usually filed Monday night at 8pm Eastern as well) and Southwest usually matches by the Tuesday 1pm domestic airfare distribution, which then hits their reservation system at approximately 3pm Eastern (these cheaper prices are typically pulled 3 days later on Thursday night).

Like all airlines, Southwest is very active in matching prices of their competitors who fly the same routes as they do on a daily basis (both nonstop and connecting flights). Just so you know, Southwest serves just under 70 cities, while the legacy airlines typically serve between 130-240 non-code share cities.

How to Stay on Top of Sales

If you have specific locations in mind, sign up for our realtime email airline ticket price drop alerts no airline wants to be undercut so following all airlines on a route for your next trip is the best way to know exactly when to shop and buy (let us do all the heavy lifting).

Don t Forget Facebook and Twitter

If you have an issue, grab your smart phone and post on their Facebook page or tweet your problem you re likely to get a faster response as Southwest has PR people manning those social media channels full-time.

    Bottom Line

So the best time to purchase tickets on Southwest varies, but a good rule of thumb is again shop Tuesday at 3pm Eastern. when the carrier has matched other airlines sale prices.

The cheapest day to buy airline tickets? It’s Sunday, not Tuesday.

    #airline tickets cheapest

The cheapest day to buy airline tickets? It’s Sunday, not Tuesday.

    Published: October 23, 2014 11:14 am

A company that handles airline ticket sales for travel agencies has come out with study of airline ticket purchases, and found some interesting factoids:

The cheapest tickets are bought on Sunday, not Tuesday as others have advised.

The cheapest tickets on domestic flights are bought eight weeks in advance of departure. Eight weeks out, the average fare of $409 was 19.2 percent below the average domestic fare of $496.

The cheapest tickets on international flights are bought 24 weeks in advance of departure. At 24 weeks out, the average fare of $1,004 was 26.6 percent under the average international fare of $1,368.

The findings from the Airlines Reporting Corp. are based on ARC’s study of airline ticket purchases between January 2013 through July 2014. It updates and slightly changes findings from a similar January 2012 study of 2011 ticket purchases.

In the 2012 study, the cheapest domestic tickets were bought six weeks in advance. ARC didn’t look at international tickets in that study.

Chuck Thackston, ARC’s managing director of enterprise information management, said these are only broad findings.

Air ticket pricing is dynamic, and ARC isn t advising anyone to purchase tickets only at these times during the sales cycle as there is no guarantee they will receive the lowest price; it is just what the data pattern indicates during the study period, Thackston said.

Thackston said the latest study is “significant because it reveals that not only have the lowest airfares shifted from six to eight weeks out for domestic travel, but the savings are markedly greater on a percentage basis. It was also interesting to see that the data showed the least expensive tickets were purchased on a Sunday as opposed to Tuesday, which is a common belief.”

The ARC study, which looked at nearly 130 million tickets worth $94 billion bought in the United States, did find that Tuesday was the cheapest day for Monday-Friday purchases.

Fifty years ago there was only one basic way to purchase airline tickets. You went to a travel agent, who would search the listings for all available flights and sell you a seat for your chosen travel date. The travel agency monopoly is gone now, and the average person can choose multiple methods for buying airline tickets. The best way for you to buy a ticket depends entirely on your particular travel needs.

    Save Money

Savvy travelers know that the best way to save money on airline tickets is by comparison shopping at least three months in advance. If you know when you’ll be traveling and are willing to spend an hour or two online, you can find the least expensive ticket to your destination. Check ticket meta-search engines such as Kayak, Skyscanner or Look on the airline’s sites for the same flights, as they sometimes offer cheaper seats than the meta searches. Switching back and forth between sites will involve some note-taking and time spent on the computer, but it’s a proven way to find inexpensive airline tickets.

The Magical Day to Buy Airline Tickets

Date 24 Nov 2015 | Posted by Linda Paul

Life keeps becoming more complicated when our wishes and limited resources clash against each other. Among them is the dream to trot around the globe. Since the airfares remain sky high, we often find ourselves struggling with our dream like plans.

The cost of flying is certainly high and you’ll witness the web brimming with expert opinions of how to get access to cheap airfares. Booking early, traveling on the holiday itself, and making use of the mileage program of an airline are some of the advices that you must have come across while booking yourself a flight.

Since there are so many of them, we can end up in a confused state of mind because implementation of all of them can be a task!

Among them is the famous debate of which day you should opt for to buy airline tickets.

Yes, this is quite confusing! Since it is one of the most frequently asked questions of shoppers hoping to book a cheap airfare, it is worth finding out. Let’s see what wins for being the most hit day for booking a flight.

You might consider it a myth until it magically starts working for you. Tuesday has become the recent talk of the town to book cheap air tickets. No, it’s not an arbitrarily chosen time of the week.

    But why Tuesday?

Since most of the airlines start to launch their amazing sales in the closing hours on Monday or during the early part of Tuesday, you can get a fine chance of getting hold of these appealing deals. Since the aviation market has become increasingly competitive, all other airlines get into the rat race to offer even more competitive fares for their valued customers. No airline would wish to land on the fourth or later page of the web search and would happily lower their fares. The buying window for these sales is only up for a limited time and only the smarter ones will be able to access them.

Why wouldn’t you want to avail that chance?

Remember, Tuesday around 3 PM, ET!

Couldn’t look for the deal you’ve been anxiously looking for on Tuesday?

Fret not! Sunday is also a great time to buy airline tickets as claimed by many of the recent studies on this matter.

Sunday, really. This idea was brought forward through the famous report released by Texas A M University. The report claimed that the airline fares are likely to become 5% cheaper when booked on a weekend, especially Sunday.

This may be because of a number of reasons. Credit needs to be given to social media because discounts can be updated to the passengers during any time of the week.

You would certainly come across contradictions in these findings as there are many loopholes that are open to criticism. The truth is, there is no perfect answer.

So do we really need to consider the best to buy airline tickets?

Yes, the time and date certainly matters as the fares keep changing because of the ever rising competition in the market. It is worth keeping a watch!

Why Buy Used Cars, Rental Vehicles for Sale – Enterprise Car

    #rental cars cheap

    Why Buy a Used Vehicle

    Consider the Advantages

Buying a used vehicle can save you money because a new vehicle experiences its greatest loss in value within the first 12 to 18 months. Rather than watching value decrease significantly in just the first year, consider buying a used car or truck. A used rental car can have a lower purchase price with lower monthly payments, and the factory warranties are usually still available. Buying a used vehicle allows you to upgrade to the newer make and model you want and add more optional features.

Why Throw Money Away on New Car Depreciation?

Thinking about buying a new vehicle? Think again. According to the experts at Kelley Blue Book . in three years a new vehicle could depreciate by as much as 73 percent of its value. At best it will retain a mere 62 percent of its value after three years. That s one major advantage to buying a used vehicle.

Car depreciation is the dark cloud hanging over new purchases. While most vehicles depreciate by 15 to 20 percent of their value each year, the first year tends to hurt the most. In fact, the two-minute drive off the lot can cost some owners up to 15 percent of their new vehicle s value.

If you re a car buyer unwilling to throw away money on vehicle depreciation for that new car smell, consider buying a high-quality, late-model used car. In addition to a lower purchase price, lower registration and license fees, you ll also enjoy lower depreciation, as the previous owner has already absorbed the steepest portion of the used vehicle s depreciation cost. Some popular used models include Civic. Accord. CRV. Camry. Wrangler. Tacoma. Challenger. Mini. Explorer. Escape. Altima and Outback .

    Used Rental Car Value

Consider the Benefits of Buying a Used Rental Car

Millions of used rental vehicles (and leased vehicles) are sold annually in the United States. Many were passed directly to auctions and on to used car dealerships. However, tens of thousands were selected by the rental and lease companies for their own car resale businesses. These used vehicles represent the cream of the crop and are often considered some of the best used cars on the market. These used vehicles, while driven by multiple motorists, receive much more care than the average consumer-owned used car and offer the following benefits:

    • Great selection: The typical used car for sale at Enterprise Car Sales is one to two years old. This creates a selection of vehicles that are contemporary, stylish, and sought after.
    • One owner: If offered a used vehicle owned by an auto expert committed to vehicle maintenance and care, the average used car buyer might be tempted to sign sight unseen. Enterprise Car Sales offers this opportunity. Used cars are our business, and our livelihood depends on keeping them expertly maintained.
    • Low mileage: Used rental vehicles or used leased vehicles often have less than 40,000 miles when they are put up for sale.
    • Reasonable prices: All used vehicles sold by Enterprise Car Sales are offered at low prices, and with a no-haggle policy, buyers get a great used car price without the pressure of bargaining.

Used rental cars provide a tremendous value. Make a smart move and consider buying one the next time you re in the market for a used vehicle.

When to Buy Airline Tickets and More Travel Advice

Want to find cheapest available flights every time you shop? FareCompare CEO Rick Seaney shares his favorite money-saving tips.

LISTEN :   Rick Seaney s podcast of best tips.

5 Ways to Save on Airfare

Let s start off  with basic advice for all travelers: Always  compare airfare prices. No single airline always has the best deal. If you don t compare, you could pay too much. More good tips:

#1: Shop for domestic deals on Tuesdays

According to FareCompare s database of current and historical airfares (one of the world s largest), airfare pricing trends show the best day to shop for U.S. domestic tickets is Tuesday and the best time on Tuesday is about 3 p.m. eastern. Here s why:

Airlines typically kick off airfare sales late Monday or early Tuesday.

    • Other airlines lower prices to stay competitive
    • Price matching is usually complete by early Tuesday afternoon
    • Newly discounted airfares hit reservation systems by 3pm eastern

However, deals can and do pop up at other times and this is especially true for deals sought by international travelers which bring us to our second tip.

#2: Sign up for real-time airfare alerts

Sign up for airfare alerts and you ll receive notifications of airfare price drops in real-time. This is important because sale seats are limited and the quicker you learn of a deal, the better your chance of getting it.

#3: Don t buy airline tickets too early

Airlines don t begin actively managing U.S. domestic fares until about three and a half months before departure; if you buy earlier, you will likely pay a mid-range price which won t be the best deal. For international flights, there is a longer window. Our guidelines:

    • U.S. flights: Start shopping no earlier than about 3 and a half months before departure.
    • International: Start shopping no earlier than about five months before departure.

#4: Don t buy airline tickets too late

When it comes to most U.S. legacy carriers (American, Delta, United),  airfare prices can rise dramatically inside 14-days before departure; with discount or low cost airlines, that window is usually 7 to 10 days before departure. This is when last-minute business travelers typically shop and as a result, they pay more. No reason for vacation travelers to do likewise.

    • U.S. domestic flights: Purchase tickets a month before departure.
    • International travel: Purchase tickets a month and a half before departure.

    #5: Fly the cheapest days

Most people want to squeeze as much time out of a vacation as possible which is why flights on Fridays and Sunday are so popular. However, the airlines know this and they usually charge more for such flights.

    • Cheapest days to fly, U.S. domestic flights: Usually Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday.
    • Cheapest days to fly, international flights: Midweek dates are often cheaper than weekends.

Now that you ve found cheaper airfare, what will you spend that extra vacation money on?

Flights can be one of the first things to consider if you’re planning an international trip. Although you might have hotels and transportation to plan, the price of your flight could dictate what destinations you choose based on cost. Flight prices can vary from day to day so checking price comparison websites can help you snag the best deal. However, other factors including the amount of time before you want to travel and the day of the week you book can also impact the final cost of your plane tickets.

    Advance Booking

Booking tickets in advance can help get flights at a lower price. Rick Seaney, CEO of, recommends buying tickets around four months before you plan to travel. He says that airlines don’t usually release cheaper tickets before this time but, when released, reduced seats are likely to sell quickly. Therefore, you should start checking price comparison websites well before you want to leave.

    Should You Buy Travel Insurance?

By Jessica L. Anderson | From Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, August 2013

Vacation protection can make sense, but know what it does and doesn’t cover.

Hurricane season is upon us, which means a tropical storm could be brewing just as you’re about to leave on vacation. Is travel insurance the solution?

    See Also: Are You Covered?

Probably not. Unforeseen events are typically covered, but foreseen (or foreseeable) ones are usually not. A tropical storm being tracked is a foreseen event. So if you cancel your trip to Puerto Rico because you’re worried the storm could turn into a hurricane as it blows through San Juan, you won’t be reimbursed.

Commonly covered reasons for cancellation include death or illness (yours or a close family member’s, as long as you have a doctor’s note or death certificate), a layoff at work, a terrorist incident in your city or destination, storm damage that makes your destination uninhabitable, and bankruptcy of a travel supplier. Preexisting medical conditions are covered if you buy coverage within a week or two of booking your trip. After that, they’re considered a foreseen illness and excluded.

You will be reimbursed only for nonrefundable expenses. If the airline rebooks you at no charge or the cruise operator gives you a voucher for a canceled trip, you won’t be reimbursed. Save your receipts and any documentation of the reason for canceling; you will need backup when you make a claim.

    Reasons to Buy

If you understand what is and isn’t covered, you can insure your nonrefundable costs so that you can afford to reschedule. You can compare dozens of policies at and Package policies, which run about 4% to 8% of the cost of your trip, include coverage for trip cancellation and delay, interruption (in case you get sick while traveling and have to return home suddenly), medical costs, and lost or delayed baggage. They also include 24-hour phone service to help you find a medical facility or rearrange travel plans.

Even if you think cancellation is unlikely, insuring yourself for medical issues is a good idea, especially if you’re traveling abroad. U.S. insurance is typically not accepted abroad (and Medicare is rarely accepted). Even if you’re planning travel within the U.S. your insurance may have large deductibles or co-payments for care outside your home area. Medical evacuation to get you to a treatment facility from a remote area or to airlift you home can cost upward of $100,000.

A package policy includes medical and medevac coverage. You can also purchase travel medical insurance separately. The cost is based on your age, preexisting conditions and the length of your trip. For example, a 50-year-old traveling for two weeks can get $50,000 of medical coverage and $300,000 of medical evacuation coverage for about $40. Look for policies that offer primary coverage; otherwise, the insurance won’t kick in until your medical plan has processed a claim.

Be wary of the offerings from airlines and cruise lines. Airline policies typically offer less coverage for the same price as a third-party package plan, and cruise insurance may offer vouchers for future travel instead of reimbursement. Also, their policies don’t cover their own financial default, so if they go under, you’re out of luck. Policies sold by travel sites are also less comprehensive.

Many companies now allow you to add riders that let you cancel for any reason. Say you’re worried about political unrest in the region you’re visiting, or you think you may have to attend a funeral during your trip. You can pay extra and cover every eventuality. The surcharge is 50% to 60% of your base premium, and about 75% of your costs will be reimbursed if you cancel (some companies offer up to 90% reimbursement). The catch? You still must cancel at least two days before your trip.

    Stock-Picking Strategies: Growth Investing #picking #stocks #to #buy

    Stock-Picking Strategies: Growth Investing

In the late 1990s, when technology companies were flourishing, growth investing techniques yielded unprecedented returns for investors. But before any investor jumps onto the growth investing bandwagon, s/he should realize that this strategy comes with substantial risks and is not for everyone.

    Value versus Growth
The best way to define growth investing is to contrast it to value investing. Value investors are strictly concerned with the here and now; they look for stocks that, at this moment, are trading for less than their apparent worth. Growth investors, on the other hand, focus on the future potential of a company, with much less emphasis on its present price. Unlike value investors, growth investors buy companies that are trading higher than their current intrinsic worth – but this is done with the belief that the companies’ intrinsic worth will grow and therefore exceed their current valuations.

As the name suggests, growth stocks are companies that grow substantially faster than others. Growth investors are therefore primarily concerned with young companies. The theory is that growth in earnings and/or revenues will directly translate into an increase in the stock price. Typically a growth investor looks for investments in rapidly expanding industries especially those related to new technology. Profits are realized through capital gains and not dividends as nearly all growth companies reinvest their earnings and do not pay a dividend.

    No Automatic Formula
Growth investors are concerned with a company’s future growth potential, but there is no absolute formula for evaluating this potential. Every method of picking growth stocks (or any other type of stock) requires some individual interpretation and judgment. Growth investors use certain methods – or sets of guidelines or criteria – as a framework for their analysis, but these methods must be applied with a company’s particular situation in mind. More specifically, the investor must consider the company in relation to its past performance and its industry ‘s performance. The application of any one guideline or criterion may therefore change from company to company and from industry to industry.

    The NAIC
The National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) is one of the best known organizations using and teaching the growth investing strategy. It is, as it says on its website, “one big investment club” whose goal is to teach investors how to invest wisely. The NAIC has developed some basic “universal” guidelines for finding possible growth companies – here’s a look at some of the questions the NAIC suggests you should ask when considering stocks.

    1. Strong Historical Earnings Growth?
According to the NAIC, the first question a growth investor should ask is whether the company, based on annual revenue. has been growing in the past. Below are rough guidelines for the rate of EPS growth an investor should look for in companies of differing sizes, which would indicate their growth investing potential:

Although the NAIC suggests that companies display this type of EPS growth in at least the last five years, a 10-year period of this growth is even more attractive. The basic idea is that if a company has displayed good growth (as defined by the above chart) over the last five- or 10-year period, it is likely to continue doing so in the next five to 10 years.

    2. Strong Forward Earnings Growth?
The second criterion set out by the NAIC is a projected five-year growth rate of at least 10-12%, although 15% or more is ideal. These projections are made by analysts. the company or other credible sources.

The big problem with forward estimates is that they are estimates. When a growth investor sees an ideal growth projection, he or she, before trusting this projection, must evaluate its credibility. This requires knowledge of the typical growth rates for different sizes of companies. For example, an established large cap will not be able to grow as quickly as a younger small-cap tech company. Also, when evaluating analyst consensus estimates, an investor should learn about the company’s industry – specifically, what its prospects are and what stage of growth it is at. (See The Stages of Industry Growth .)

    3. Is Management Controlling Costs and Revenues?
The third guideline set out by the NAIC focuses specifically on pre-tax profit margins. There are many examples of companies with astounding growth in sales but less than outstanding gains in earnings. High annual revenue growth is good, but if EPS has not increased proportionately, it’s likely due to a decrease in profit margin.

By comparing a company’s present profit margins to its past margins and its competition’s profit margins, a growth investor is able to gauge fairly accurately whether or not management is controlling costs and revenues and maintaining margins. A good rule of thumb is that if company exceeds its previous five-year average of pre-tax profit margins as well as those of its industry, the company may be a good growth candidate.

    4. Can Management Operate the Business Efficiently?
Efficiency can be quantified by using return on equity (ROE). Efficient use of assets should be reflected in a stable or increasing ROE. Again, analysis of this metric should be relative: a company’s present ROE is best compared to the five-year average ROE of the company and the industry.

    5. Can the Stock Price Double in Five Years?
If a stock cannot realistically double in five years, it’s probably not a growth stock. That’s the general consensus. This may seem like an overly high, unrealistic standard, but remember that with a growth rate of 10%, a stock’s price would double in seven years. So the rate growth investors are seeking is 15% per annum, which yields a doubling in price in five years.

    An Example
Now that we’ve outlined the NAIC’s basic criteria for evaluating growth stocks, let’s demonstrate how these criteria are used to analyze a company, using Microsoft’s 2003 figures. For the sake of this demonstration, we’ll discuss these numbers as though they were Microsoft’s most current figures (that is, “today’s figures”).

    • Five-year average annual sales growth is 15.94%.
    • Five-year average annual EPS growth is 10.91%.

Both of these are strong figures. The annual EPS growth is well above the 5% standard the NAIC sets out for firms of Microsoft’s size.

    2. Strong Projected Earnings Growth

Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas and has the fourth-largest population among cities in the United States in an area covering more than 600 square miles. Houston is a vibrant international city where cultural diversity and uninhibited spirit combine to boost the local culinary scene. Dozens of standout, chef-owned restaurants and local institutions dot the landscape, and the dining public embraces them.

Houston is also a power-shopper’s paradise. From the high-end choices at the famed Galleria to discount discoveries on Harwin Drive, there are plenty of places to pick up anything and everything on your list. Houston is a land of malls. In fact, every pocket of the city is home to a mall where shoppers will find anchor stores such as Macy’s and Dillard’s as well as other smaller, national retailers. How to Buy Travel Insurance – Consumer Reports #israel #travel

    #travel insurence

Maybe, if there are gaps in your auto, health, life, or homeowners policies. But buy wisely.

    Overlapping coverage

Almost $2 billion in travel insurance is sold each year for several what ifs: You need to cancel a trip because of illness, the death of a relative, or bad weather; your belongings are lost or stolen; your traveling companion dies; or you need emergency medical care. Premiums depend on the age of the travelers, the type of coverage, and the trip’s cost. For a standard policy you’ll pay about 5 to 7 percent of the cost of the trip, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Tour operators, cruise-line reps, and travel agents sell two-thirds of the travel policies, and they collect commission on them.

But coverage may be unnecessary if you already have protection through homeowners, auto, life, or health insurance. Credit-card benefits and consumer-protection laws also may help. Bob Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, says travel insurance is often not worth the price. “Don’t buy insurance that covers small, manageable losses or only a slice of risk,” he says.

For example, losing some of your belongings won’t break you financially, so keep a close eye on your valuables and be ready to accept losing less-valuable stuff. Still losing sleep? Narrow in on what you’re worried about, and see if your insurance or credit cards cover you. Then be flexible. “If you’re worried about dying in a plane crash,” Hunter says, “you should get term life insurance rather than flight insurance, because you might die in a car crash.”

If you’ll be traveling overseas, your health insurance might not provide coverage should you need to see a doctor or be evacuated to a hospital, the insurance institute says. Medicare generally doesn’t cover health-care expenses outside the U.S. although some Medigap policies do. So you might want to consider a medical travel-insurance policy.

    New BMW Cars #new #uk #bmw #cars,uk #bmw #cars,buy #new #uk

    New UK BMW

    A Brief history of BMW

BMW can trace its history all the way back to 1913, when a Bavarian named Karl Rapp started an aircraft-engine shop in Munich named Rapp Motoren Werke. 1916 saw Rapp Motoren Werke securing a contract to supply a large number of V12 aero engines to Austro-Daimler, as a result, Rapp needed to find a backer to finance the companies expansion and the Bayerische Motoren Werke BMW as we know it was formed. Unfortunately BMW expanded too quickly and financial difficulties followed leading to Rapp resigning and Franz Josef Popp a leading industrial tycoon who laid the foundations for the BMW company that is known today.

For the next few years BMW concentrated on the manufacture of aircraft engines until in 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles restrictions were placed on German companies manufacturing parts for the aero industry, as a result, BMW diversified to manufacture components for the rail industry. 1923 saw BMW finally make their first move into the automotive industry with the introduction of the R32, a motorcycle that would go on to hold motorcycle world speed records throughout the 1930’s.

Buoyed by this success, BMW purchased a small car manufacturer (the Eisenach Vehicle Factory) in 1928 and by the 1930’s had begun production of sports and touring cars. The culmination was the BMW 328 roadster, a car that has been named one of 25 finalists for Car of the Century by a worldwide panel of automotive journalists.

The Second World War ending saw BMW’s main factories being dismantled by the allies and diversification was once again the name of the game, a brief foray into kitchen and garden equipment followed, with the introduction of a new motorcycle in 1948. The 1950’s saw a move back into the car market, although with no marked success, however with a change of direction that saw BMW concentrating on sports sedans and compact touring cars, the 1960’s saw a an increase in sales that meant BMW was beginning to compete with its rival Mercedes Benz. Sales peaked in 1986, but with the collapse of the Berlin Wall a whole new marketplace opened up and BMW capitalised and as a result outsold Mercedes for the first time in 1992.

BMW are now regarded as one of the premium car manufacturers with a combination of outstanding engineering and a fantastic build quality the Bayerische Motoren Werke has come a long way since its humble beginnings all those years ago.

Cheapest Days to Fly and Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets

Editor s note: We updated this popular post in 2015 with new and easy-to-use information. One thing that hasn t changed is these tips still help save money every time you shop for airfare.

Update: Summer, Holiday, Peak Travel Tips

Three quick tips to save time and money during the busiest travel days of the year.

    1. Get to the airport early: If flying during any peak season (particularly June, July or August) get to the airport anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours earlier than normal. Do this! Airport lines will be long and if you aren t at the gate before the aircraft door closes, you will not be flying.
    2. Keep an eye on the weather: Summer weather can be much worse than winter. Thunderstorms delay flights more often than snowstorms so be aware and know what to do if your flight is cancelled or delayed .
    3. Watch the baggage fees: A cheap flight can rapidly turn into an expensive one if you don t watch bag fees. Note: Carry-on bags are free on most airlines but Allegiant, Frontier and Spirit do charge for carry-ons. Only one U.S. airline still offers 2 checked bags for free: Southwest.

Now let s find some cheap flights.

Find Cheap Flights: Fly Hungry, Fly Tired

We get it. You re busy and your time is valuable. When you want airline tickets, you want the best comparison shopping site to find cheap flights fast. Next step:

Fly when no one wants to. We are talking about flying the least popular days and times. The reason they re unpopular is because it s inconvenient.

    • Fly Hungry: Before breakfast, at the dinner hour, overnight.
    • Fly Tired: Travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays when most don t feel like getting on a plane.

These are the basics. Keep reading for a complete explanation.

What are the Cheapest Days to Fly

These are general guidelines but there are always exceptions which is why you have to compare fares and compares days and flight times.

    • Cheapest days: The cheapest days to fly on most U.S. domestic routes are Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays. Learn more about this here .
    • Expensive days: Popular days will cost more. The most popular/most expensive days are usually Fridays and Sundays .
    • Cheapest times: Again, fly when most people don t want to. This includes flights at dawn, red-eyes or overnight flights, and often flights around the dinner hour.

Can t fly the cheapest times or days in both directions? Do it one-way for your trip and you ll still reap half the savings.

When is the Best Time to Book a Flight

Best day to shop: FareCompare s data shows that best time to book a flight in the U.S. is Tuesday at 3 p.m. eastern time. This day and time give you access to the best flight deals. It s when airlines release the most sales and the best time to book plane tickets. Learn more about this here .

Best time-frame to shop: This varies depending on where you fly.

    • Domestic fares: The best time to buy airline tickets in the U.S. is between three months and 30 days before departure.
    • International fares: The best time to buy international airline tickets is between 5 ½ months and 1 ½ months before departure. During peak seasons such as June, July and August or December holidays, purchase tickets two months in advance.

A big mistake many people make is to delay shopping until the last minute thinking there will be deals. Those days are gone and last-minute fares tend to be much more expensive (this is when the steeper prices business travelers pay kick in). Bottom line: Procrastination doesn t pay.

    How to Save with Flexibility

Sometimes a little inconvenience can save big money. Check out the following tips and decide whether you re willing to endure a longer travel day or shopping experience.

Connecting flights: Often not always, but often you can save by foregoing the ease of a non-stop flight in favor of a less convenient connecting flight. Sometimes adding a stop (or two) can save as much as 50 percent. Learn more about this here.

Bigger airports: Bigger airports (particularly hubs) often have cheaper airfares. Compare prices from your home airport as well as the nearest larger airport and you may find driving an extra hour or two is well worth it.

Shop one passenger at a time: When booking travel for two or more, shop one passenger at a time. That s because airline reservation systems have a quirk that works like this: Multiple  tickets sold in a single transaction must be the same price. If you shop for two tickets at the same time, and there is one ticket for $100 but the other tickets are $200, you ll pay $200 for both tickets. If you shop one at a time, you ll get one ticket for $100 and one for $200. Learn more about this here .

Sign up for airfare alerts: Getting to see the best prices in real-time is simple; just sign up at FareCompare (it s free and it s fast). Tip: When you are alerted to a good price that interests you, jump on it it will not last long.

Yes, We Have More Tips to Find Cheap Flights

Modular Home Prices: How Much Will My Modular Home Cost? #buy

Modular Home Prices: How Much Will My Modular Home Cost?

Find out how much modular homes really cost to build. Watch our informative video on price per square foot costs for a prefab home.

When asking how much a modular home will cost to build, many different sources will give you many different answers. Some companies will tell you that they can build you a home for as low as $35 per square foot, but what they are quoting you is only the base price. When talking about the cost of a modular home there are a few different terms used to distinguish which price you’re referring to. Always make sure to ask specific questions so you will know which price is being discussed.

Any dollar amounts we give on this page are estimates based off of the best information we have available. Your actual costs can and will be different depending on what and where you’re building. Check out our Price Breakdown Page to see exactly where all your money is going.

The Base Price only includes the cost of manufacturing the modules for the base plan that you have selected. No customizations or alterations will be taken into consideration with this modular homes price. Some companies will artificially reduce the base price of the home by listing space like an unfinished attic as part of the total square footage. While you can usually turn that space into livable area, that cost is not included in the base price.

How Close an Initial Quote will be to the Detailed Quote: Exact

Likelihood That the Final Cost Will Change From a Detailed Quote: Extremely Unlikely

Average Price: $50 per sq. ft.

When you actually have a home that you might want to live in with appropriate finishes and any upgrades you may want (including separate structures such as garages), this is now known as your Custom Price. This still only includes the work done by the manufacturer at the factory.

How Close an Initial Quote will be to the Detailed Quote: Almost Exact

Likelihood That the Final Cost Will Change From a Detailed Quote: Unlikely

A manufacturer may say something like “You’re looking at around $200,000 to have the home built and set up.” There are a few half-truths in that claim. First, this price may or may not include the cost of delivering the modules to your build site. This cost can vary wildly depending on how far away your build site is from the factory, and in extreme cases the cost can run in to 5 digits.

When the manufacturer says “set up,” what you may hear is “finish.” This is not what they mean. They said “set up” because they are only talking about setting the modules on the foundation and securing them. This includes fastening the modules to each other and attaching roofs and dormers, but will not include any additional roofing work, attaching utilities, or even the cost of building the foundation that the house must be set on. Since delivery cost is the largest unknown in this situation, ask if they have delivered to your area before and deduce a ballpark number from what it cost before.

How Close an Initial Quote will be to the Detailed Quote: Fairly Accurate

Likelihood That the Final Cost Will Change From a Detailed Quote: Fairly Unlikely

This is the highest price that your manufacturer will be able to give you any help with. It includes everything the previous prices do in addition to the estimated costs for site prep, pouring the foundation, buttoning up, and any site work like constructing porches. Since all of those aspects are handled by your GC or builder, this price is highly dependent on the costs that they quote you.

How Close an Initial Quote will be to the Detailed Quote: Wait for the Detailed Quote

Likelihood That the Final Cost Will Change From a Detailed Quote: Extremely Likely

The All-in price is the total cost of building your home. It includes everything the previous prices do in addition to costs for connecting utilities, purchasing land, site work, landscaping, paving a driveway, permits, taxes, fees, etc. There is no way to determine what this cost will be without doing some serious research into your specific situation. Enlist the help of your manufacturer, GC, real estate agent, town hall, and local utilities company.

How Close an Initial Quote will be to the Detailed Quote: Seriously, Wait for Detailed Quotes

Likelihood That the Final Cost Will Change From a Detailed Quote: It’s Going to Change

Average Price Per Square Foot: Impossible to Estimate

    Price Breakdown

So why do these prices have such a huge gap in estimated modular home price? Check out our Price Breakdown Page to see exactly where all that money is going.

And how exactly will you pay for all of this? With a modular home mortgage of course!

Buy Senior Travel Insurance for Your Next Trip #magellan #travel

    #discount travel insurance

Getting Travel Insurance for Your Next Trip

By Nancy Parode. Senior Travel Expert

Nancy Parode’s travel and cultural articles have appeared in print magazines, such as Military Spouse and Northern Virginia. and on several websites, including Sixty and Me,, The World I Online and Nancy also blogged about military life for, the website of Annapolis, Maryland’s The Capital newspaper. named Nancy’s Senior Travel blog here at a Top Travel Blog in the Senior Travel category, and’s Senior Travel website made Discover Corps ‘ list of Best Baby Boomer Travel Sites for 2105.

Nancy has been featured on NPR affiliate WRVO Public Media’s “Take Care” radio show and BlogTalkRadio’s “Transformed Travel” show. She has been interviewed by The New York Times’ Frugal Travel writer Seth Kugel,’s Margaret Manning, The Amateur Traveler’s Chris Christensen and consumer advocate Christopher Elliott.

    Consider these situations:

    • You fall and break your leg while visiting Croatia. You must fly home, yet cannot bend your left knee.
    • Two days before you are due to fly to New Zealand, you come down with this year’s strain of influenza.
    • Your cruise ship cannot leave on time because a hurricane is bearing down on your departure city.

If you buy the right kind of travel insurance before your trip starts, you can recover the cost of your canceled trip or the extra expense of flying home while disabled.

Consider purchasing travel insurance to prevent unexpected problems from ruining your dream vacation.

Although some travel experts and even Consumer Reports claim that travel insurance isn’t worth the money, seniors should research this issue carefully for several reasons:

    • If your only medical insurance is Medicare or Medicaid and you plan to travel to another country, consider purchasing travel insurance. Medicare only pays for expenses incurred within the United States. If you should get sick or become injured while abroad, you will be expected to pay for your medical care up front, and emergency medical evacuation costs thousands of dollars.
    • If you are insured through an HMO, check to see if you can get emergency medical care outside of the HMO’s service area, and find out if a deductible applies. Some HMO’s will not cover out-of-region or overseas medical expenses. Travel insurance could be a good way to temporarily add to your health coverage if your HMO’s service area is limited.
    • If you book a trip or cruise and must prepay, you may face a penalty from your tour agency or cruise line if you need to cancel your trip. This penalty may be more than the cost of trip cancellation insurance. If so, trip cancellation insurance could protect you from a larger loss.

    • If you travel often, consider an annual membership in an emergency evacuation program, such as MedJet. For a few hundred dollars per year, you’ll receive emergency medical transportation to your chosen hospital if you should get sick or sustain an injury.

    Types of Travel Insurance

Shopping for travel insurance can be confusing. There are many types of travel insurance plans; some cover only a particular group of losses, while others are comprehensive policies.

According to the U. S. Travel Insurance Association (UStiA), there are three basic kinds of travel insurance coverage:

    • Trip cancellation insurance. This type of policy covers the cost of your airfare and other prepaid expenses if you need to cancel your trip. Trip cancellation insurance will reimburse you if you cannot make your trip because you or a family member becomes ill or if weather problems prevent you from traveling. It will also reimburse you for lost luggage. Some policies also cover financial default of your travel supplier.
    • Emergency medical coverage. This pays for medical care and the cost of emergency return travel. This coverage is especially useful for seniors because it pays for medical expenses incurred outside of your home country.
    • 24-hour telephone assistance. This coverage provides travelers with an easy way to locate doctors and get emergency help, and is especially helpful if you plan to travel to an area where English is not a common language.

How to Shop for Travel Insurance

Here are some tips for choosing a travel insurance policy.

    • Purchase travel insurance through your travel agent. A good travel agency will have working relationships with reputable travel insurance providers and will offer various types of policies.
  • Call your regular insurance agent and ask if s/he sells travel insurance.
  • Contact the U. S. Travel Insurance Association, the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada or a similar trade association in your home country. Ask for a list of travel insurance agents in your area. These professional associations also provide travel insurance information.
  • Ask around. If you participate in online discussion groups, such as AARP’s message boards, you can post a question about travel insurance and read about other travelers’ experiences. Discuss your travel plans with friends and ask if they have purchased travel insurance. Do some online research – for example, do a search on the name of a travel insurance company – to see if other travelers have reported problems.
  • Use an online insurance comparison site, such as or to help you research coverage and costs.
  • Look for a policy that covers pre-existing conditions ; some don’t. Others will cover pre-existing conditions only if you purchase your policy within a specified time period after paying your trip deposit.
  • If you are taking a sports-related or adventure trip, look for a policy that covers sports-related injuries. Many travel insurance policies won’t pay for “high adventure” injuries.
  • Read the entire policy. Don t rely on someone else s description of coverage. If you don t understand what s covered and what s not, ask questions before you buy.
  • While travel insurance isn’t cheap – it can add up to as much as ten percent of your total trip cost – it can give you peace of mind and provide financial assistance if the worst should happen.

10 Tips: Should you buy travel insurance? Money – 10 Tips.

    #buy travel insurance

In rare instances it s a good deal, but it often duplicates existing coverage

Planning to go trekking in the Himalayas? Or maybe take a little cruise down to Mexico? Before you head for the hills, it’s a good idea to make sure you have enough insurance coverage.

    More from

Clinton said she is inspired to keep working to ensure that Charlotte and her generation are provided equal opportunities.

Travel insurance is becoming increasingly popular, but in many cases it simply duplicates coverage you already have.

The following tips can help you determine what kind of travel coverage, if any, is right for you.

    1. Familiarize yourself with what’s out there. Travel insurance can include trip cancellation, trip interruption, accidental death or dismemberment, medical and dental care, transportation to medical facilities, loss of luggage or personal possessions and protection against the bankruptcy or default of your cruise line or tour operator.

    2. Determine whether you’re already covered. Many homeowners’ and renters’ policies provide coverage for theft and other losses away from home. Your medical and auto insurance may be valid in other countries. Your life insurance policy should cover you and your family while you travel. And airlines must reimburse you if they lose your bags.

    3. Remember your credit cards and auto club membership. Check to see what travel protection you have from those little plastic cards in your wallet. The American Express Platinum Card is especially good about giving generous accidental death and dismemberment coverage, insurance for car rental loss and damage, and extra lost baggage protection.

    4. Buy through a third-party insurer. Travel agents, tour operators and cruise lines sell travel insurance, but your safest bet is to obtain coverage through an established insurance company. This way your coverage won’t go up in smoke if your travel company goes bankrupt. You can compare rates at

How to Sell – Buy Mutual Funds Online #how #to #buy

Chapter 3.4: How to Buy Sell Mutual Funds

Mutual funds have been around in India for nearly three decades now, but the number of people who actively buy and sell mutual funds in the country remains abysmally low as a percentage of the population.

The fundamental reason for poor participation in the mutual fund market is the lack of awareness; not just about the benefits of mutual funds, but also the knowledge of how to buy and sell them.

You have tackled the question of how mutual funds help you achieve your investment goals in earlier chapters. Now, let’s go through the process of buying and selling mutual funds.

How to Buy Mutual Funds :

Mutual funds are versatile instruments that can be bought and sold in a variety of ways. Once you get all your paperwork in order, here are some of the various ways you can acquire mutual funds in India through Kotak Securities:

    • Buying mutual funds through Kotak Securities is a great option for investors with limited knowledge about investing and even lesser time to do the paperwork by themselves.
    • You can either trade mutual funds online through your trading account or call us and place an order.
    • The brokerage house can also double up as a financial advisor, helping you out with options that you may not be aware of, offering tips and tricks to help you make the
      most of your investments.
    • In addition to these, you can either buy directly from the
asset management company or through a bank that sells mutual funds.

Once you have decided which way you want go and which mutual fund scheme(s) you want to invest in, you will have to place the order. Here’s the step-by-step procedure of buying a mutual fund:

    • Get a demat account
    • Go to the Mutual Funds section of Kotak Securities webpage. Login and then click on ‘Place order’. Or, you can call your broker.
    • Select the name of the mutual fund or the AMC’s name that you wish to invest in.
    • Then select the correct scheme as many fund houses offer multiple schemes.
    • Specify the amount you wish to invest in the scheme.
    • In case of a dividend scheme, select one of the two dividend options — payout or reinvestment. If you select the payout option, the mutual fund’s dividends will be credited to your bank account. The reinvestment option allows the amount to be used to buy additional units of the scheme. You thus won’t get the dividends credited to your bank account. Select the former if you want a secondary source of income. The reinvestment option, however, helps you increase the size of your holdings and increase returns.

How to Sell Mutual Funds :

If you thought the amount of research done for buying a mutual fund was hard work, you’re about to repeat a lot of such work while selling your mutual funds. You need to do your homework and sell your mutual funds only if the timing is right to ensure that you always make a profit on your sale.

Some instances for when mutual funds ought to be redeemed:

    • Most people sell their mutual funds to finance some immediate or upcoming financial requirement, like buying a house or car, paying for children’s education, a health crisis or even an upcoming foreign holiday.
    • Another good time to sell off your mutual funds is when your investment requirements undergo a change – this could be due to inherent growth or changes in your existing portfolio or due to a life event that reorganizes your priorities.
    • If the performance of a mutual fund dips consistently below expectations and other comparable funds for a sustained period of time. Here, ‘sustained’ refers to a time period of 1 to 5 years at least.
    • Changes on the part of the mutual fund – a reset of its investment objectives or strategy, a rejig of its favored stock picks or sectors in which it invests or even the departure of a trusted fund manager often leads to the sale of such mutual funds by investors.

Do you see yourself in any of the scenarios? Then it’s probably a good idea to sell your funds and cut your losses early on.

There are two ways to sell your mutual funds – to another investor or back to the mutual fund. The latter is called redemption of mutual fund.
Mutual funds are best redeemed the same route through which they are purchased. This means you could choose to redeem them online or offline, through an agent or broker or directly by yourself.

However, remember to check for any exit load or charges for sale of your MF units. This will be deducted from your total proceeds from the sale.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying and Selling Mutual Funds

Mutual funds are managed portfolios of stocks, bonds and securities that offer investors the perks of participating in the stock market, but with a limited exposure to the risks involved.

Since this is the case, the need for 24 x 7 monitoring of your investments is probably unnecessary. However, this does not mean that you go into this process of investing in mutual funds completely blind and then live to regret your rash decisions.

Don’t be in a hurry to sell off low performers

Some funds are slow starters that even out their losses given enough time and attention. Patience truly is a virtue when dealing with mutual funds. Exercise it and hold on to your low performers for at least a year before you decide to get rid of them.

A lot can change with the stock market or even your low performing fund in the span of a year. Experience shows that funds that are left to accumulate returns on for the longest periods of time are often the ones that offer the highest returns on investment for the investor.

In a downturn, don’t sell everything off

Mutual funds, as mentioned earlier, are managed by professional stock market analysts and fund managers with years of experience in investing under their belts. In tough economic times, they take proactive measures to minimize the impact of the downturn on their portfolios, like switching sectors or specific stocks to minimize losses.

Don’t use your ‘gut feel’ over the training of these professionals as a justification for selling off your funds as the economy starts cooling off.

Avoid putting your money into stock market bubbles

Every few years, we see at least one sector that shows extraordinary promise and has investors making a beeline for such stocks. This tendency to favor sectors that are the ‘flavor of the season’ spills over into mutual fund trading too.

Be very careful of such deep, sector-specific investments. They could well be the next dotcom bubble in the making. Check your call with a financial advisor, read up investing literature online or otherwise, speak to other experienced investors and then proceed with your sector specific picks

Don’t pick funds based on their short term performance

Mutual funds must be evaluated based on not just their current returns but also on their long term – 1 to 5 year – returns. This is necessary to know if there has been a consistent pattern in the fund’s performance over the years and also to ensure that short term market corrections don’t negatively impact your choice of funds.

Don’t go too narrow with your mutual fund choice

You may have done the most extensive research to arrive at the number one mutual fund option according to you. However, there are no guarantees in the world of stock and securities trading. There’s always a small risk of failure even with the best managed funds.

Don’t put all your investments in one basket. Pick your top three or four choices and spread your risks among them. Make sure they are different types of mutual funds to actually benefit from this move.

Don’t sell before your lock-in periods are over

Selling a fund before the lock-in period runs out is a wasted opportunity to make some returns on your investment. There are exit loads attached to such premature exits and they often nullify the profits that you might have made had you stuck till the end of the lock in period.

Another problem is short term capital gains tax that would become applicable on your investment, thus decreasing even further the ROI from the original investment.

While researching for mutual funds, you will come across multiple types of mutual fund schemes designed to suit every investor’s needs. These may sound confusing. In the next section, we will go through the multiple types of mutual funds in detail. We will also take you through the Systematic Investment Plan and Hedge Fund investing.

Compare – Buy Cable and Satellite TV Offers #compare, buy, cable, satellite,tv,television, directv, dish #network, comcast, time #warner, best

    Compare Cable Satellite TV Providers

Cable and satellite TV services can have different offers when it comes to channels, price, and service quality. And as a customer you may be very happy with one and very unhappy with the other. You should research both types of TV companies thoroughly before choosing cable over satellite (or vice versa).

With our comparison chart below, you can start to see the difference between cable and satellite TV providers, and how those differences will determine the price you pay.

Bundles that include television service are offered by cable and phone companies. Since fiber-optic is only available in limited areas, the phone companies usually also offer a bundle where the TV component is delivered by a partner satellite TV company. In any case, bundling TV with some combination of home phone and Internet can yield monthly savings. Click below to see and compare bundle offers.

*Terms and conditions apply. See site for full details.

    Cable TV vs Satellite TV

Because of the differences in technology, cable and satellite TV have some different capabilities and features. However, you will probably find that a number of the basic features are similar between the services.

What are the differences between cable TV and satellite TV? The main differences to compare between cable and satellite providers are:

    Cable Television Companies

    How Does Cable TV Work?

Cable TV depends on a network of fiber optic and trunk cables. These cables transmit TV shows to your TV as encrypted signals. So, cable TV transmits TV shows to your home through a physical connection made up of cables, while satellite TV uses a satellite and satellite dish to transmit shows as frequencies to your home.

    Price Difference

Because of the differences in technology, cable can in some instances be more expensive than satellite service. For example, standard service starts at $29.99/month* with Time Warner Cable. By comparison, a digital package with the DISH with more channels costs $19.99/month* for the first 12 months.

    Plan Variety

Cable companies are also less likely to offer you a lot of customization when you are choosing a TV service. For example, with Time Warner Cable, you have the choice between the standard TV or the expanded Preferred TV plans. Satellite TV companies usually give you a selection of 4 or more plans with a variety of channels and prices.

This means that you have access to a great level of variety and customization with satellite TV. However, both cable and satellite TV services only offer you a limited amount of control when it comes to choosing individual channels that you want to add to your plan.

Prices for premium channels are also similar: if you wanted to add HBO to your TV plan, it would cost $15.95/month extra with Time Warner Cable, and $19/month extra with DISH.

    Cable Equipment and Technology

To use cable TV in your house, you will need to get a receiver which you connect to an outlet in your home through a series of cables and wires. Cable companies may offer promotional discounts on equipment, so look out for sales and special deals.

However, even with discounts, you will probably still need to pay some monthly fees for your equipment. For example, a cable box with Time Warner Cable costs $10.25/month with each additional receiver costing $11.75/month. Time Warner includes installation to two TVs with additional outlets costing $29.99 each.

Because cable TV relies on a physical connection of cables and wires, cable TV is much more durable than satellite TV in bad weather. It is fairly easy for a satellite to get knocked over or moved around in heavy wind and bad weather. Durable cables, on the other hand, are pretty resistant to bad weather.

Cable TV is fairly easy to install, but it can also be time-consuming. Cable companies will send someone to install the system of cables and cable boxes for you. However, these appointments can eat up a lot of time and cost extra. Cable companies generally don’t give a specific price quote for their installation services, but installation service can often run as high as $200 depending on the provider.

And you may end up spending all day on your installation appointment. When you make an installation appointment with a company, you pick a day and a range of times. The technician will arrive sometime in that range of hours. This means that you will need to be home during any given 4 or 5 hour period.

Some companies like XFINITY from Comcast give you the option to choose a self installation kit. Depending on your technical skills, this may save you time and money. So, if you think you can handle setting up the system on your own, you can avoid paying as much for an installation service from the company, and you can install the system on your own time whenever it is convenient for you.

It can also be difficult to get cable service in certain locations, especially in remote or mountainous locations. If your house isn’t very close to the nearest cable broadcast station, you could be out luck.

    Satellite TV Providers

    How Does Satellite TV Work?

When a satellite TV company wants to broadcast a TV show, the satellite company sends the show as encrypted data from their broadcast center to their satellite. The satellite then transmits the encrypted data to your satellite dish, and the dish in turn transmits the data to the receiver on your TV set.

    Price of Satellite TV

As we said before, technological differences between cable and satellite TV service providers result in different prices. Satellite TV companies usually offer lower prices on comparable plans.

However, you should note that plans can get pretty expensive with satellite TV. Because satellite companies offer plans with more channels and features, prices can get very high. For example, the Premier Plan with DIRECTV costs $92.99/month for 285+ channels.

    Plan Variety

Lots of people choose satellite TV because you can choose from a wider variety of shows and options than you can with cable TV. Again, plans with a lot of channels, features, and variety are more likely to be expensive. However, there are some cases in which you might really want a specific channel that a cable provider won’t have. For example, if you are from New York but you live in California, it might be easier to get Giants games with a satellite TV service than with a cable service.

    Satellite TV Equipment and Technology

This technology eliminates some of the problems associated with cable TV. For example, because satellite TV doesn’t depend on physical cable connections, satellite service is available to a much wider range of customers. This means that satellite TV is available in most parts of the US, basically to anyone with a satellite dish, so some of the people in remote areas who can’t get cable TV can get satellite TV without issue.

Initial installation may be more expensive with satellite service than initial installation with cable TV. Satellite dishes can be costly, so if your plan doesn’t include a satellite dish and installation, you can end up paying a good deal extra for these services. However, a lot of companies will include a satellite dish and installation for no extra cost, so just be sure to read the fine print.

However, satellite TV doesn’t always work well; your dish has to sit outside which means that satellite TV service isn’t as weatherproof as cable TV service. Heavy wind may knock over or damage your satellite dish which will ruin your TV service.

Lots of satellite TV plans include a DVR or HD DVR which allows you to easily record shows, set parental controls, watch shows from any room, and access On Demand programs and movies. Cable companies may also offer your a free DVR when you buy a TV service plan. With both satellite and cable TV service providers, you will usually have to pay a monthly fee for the DVR even though the DVR itself is included at no extra cost. Service for a DVR costs around $10+/month with either cable or satellite service.

You must enable java-script to continue.

Hey guys. My husband and I are half way there. We recently got his EAD and SS card so I figured I would share our experiences thus far. Please ask us any questions you want because reading this site was a HUGE help for us.

8/29/2015 – Mailed our AOS Packet to the Chicago Lockbox for packages requiring a signature

8/31/2015 – USPS tracking confirmed Delivery in hindsight I wouldn t of paid extra for faster mailing

9/18/15 – Received Biometrics appointment notification by mail. Date 9/28

9/21/15 – Completed Biometrics Walk In appointment at the Jamaica, Queens Application Support Center. Came at 1:30pm and the place was pretty empty. Security guard was firm but didn t give us any real problem. He had to check with his supervisor to let us go.

For a month we received no news and no updates. We called USCIS and they said that was completely normal not to have any updates in this period and for us to expect the EAD w/i 75 days of our priority date.

    10/30/2015 – EAD/ Advanced Parole approved!

    11/4/2015 Online update EAD mailed

11/18/2015 – Received Social Security Card in the mail

11/19/2015 – Took EAD card, Social Security Card, Passport and Bank Cards to DMV to apply for learner s permit. Approved.

Big things we worried about and what we did.

My husband came to the US on a B1/2 visa and he overstayed by 10 years. During that time he did work without authorization, got a Tax Identification number and filed taxes 2 of those years, and actually received a return. haha. On the forms we were truthful and did admit that he worked and did put down where he worked. So far so good and we haven t had any problems. We havent had our interview yet.

Form I-130 – Petition for Alien Relative

o Attach copy of petitioner s passport me, the wife

o Attach copy of marriage certificate

o Attach 1 passport photo of beneficiary and 1 passport photo of petitioner, write the name in PENCIL on back of photos and place each in a separate sandwich bag. I wrote in black marker the name of the person and what form picture belonged to on the sandwich bag.

o Attach Form G325A for Beneficiary and Form G325A for Petitioner. G325A.A.A.A.A. make sure it ends in A :

o Submit proof of bona fide marriage

We submitted APARTMENT LEASE and I made sure my landlord added my husband to the lease although she was only given financial information about myself. Be firm and just tell them its important. you don t have to explain yourself. Most will comply.

    – Photocopy of health insurance card which had my husbands name on it.

-Photocopy of credit cards that had my husbands name on it. Discovercard and JCpenney will send you a second card if you add them as an authorized user. So on the same paper we copied my husbands card and my card which had the same number on it.

    – Photocopy of joint bank statement which showed both of our names and address. Wells Fargo will open a bank account for someone without a SSN. I made sure to make deposits in his account from my bank account and pay some of our bills from his account to show a paper trail.

    – Photocopy of about 30 pictures of us together in different situations wedding, pictures of him and my mom, pictures of us doing a backyard project, pictures of him and my best friend. if you don t have a lot of pictures just start taking pictures randomly together and write a short blurb describing the pictures.

    – Place all supporting documents in a manilla envelope and label Proof of Bona Fide Marriage. Put in i-130 folder

    FOLDER 2

Form I-864 – Affidavit of support under section 213A – Make sure to include a photocopy of your ENTIRE tax return for most recent two years INCLUDING all of your W-2 or 1090 s. Since my salary changed drastically from last year to the current year I also included copies of my last 6 months pay stubs.

    FOLDER 3

Form I-485 – Adjustment of Status

o Medical examination report must be included in i-485

o Attach copy of birth certificate

o 2 passport size photos of the beneficiary. Follow the same instructions for the previous photos.

o Attach a copy of i-94, passport with all biographical data pages and visa pages copied.

Attach copy of marriage certificate which is the basis of the i-485

Form G-1145 e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance. Put this form as the first page in the i-485 folder.

Form I-765 Application for Employment Authorization no additional fee if filed together

    Form – 131 Advanced Parole

Include 2 passport style photos of the Beneficiary. label and place in baggy as before

Form I-693 Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record separate fee paid to the civil surgeon. We paid around $130

For the medical examination. Look up all the age appropriate vaccinations that you will need. And then go to a free clinic or community sponsored clinic if you don t have insurance and get all those vaccinations or ask for a TITERS test which will prove that you already received those vaccinations and are immune. If your childhood copy is available bring it. Ask for a printed copy of the lab reports and vaccination record of all vaccinations you get. A copy of the report should be free or minimal cost. Dont say that you need the vaccinations for immigration purposes because insurance and free clinics are not allowed to provide that service just for immigration. Bring all of these records to your medical examination appointment because if you do not have these records they WILL CHARGE YOU EXTRA to do these test. A LOT EXTRA. I recommend starting the vaccination record process about 3 months before you plan to file.

Good luck guys. We are from Long Island so our interview probably won t be for a few months. Will update you about our interview.

When To Buy Plane Tickets For The Holidays

    Sep 27, 2013

It happens every year. We celebrate Labor Day and it’s a sleigh-ride into the holidays. As Thanksgiving is under 70 days away, it’s time to start thinking about your holiday plans. And then the constant question looms: when’s the best time to buy those plane tickets?

It’s hard for consumers: There’s so much (sometimes conflicting) information about when to buy tickets. One recent study found that booking on weekends can lead to 5% lower fares than those booked during the week. Yet Rick Seaney of disagrees, and maintains that Tuesday afternoons are still ideal as airlines hike fares usually one weekend a month (but if you do buy during a hike don’t fret, the hike will likely only be between $4 and $10 more what you might pay on a Tuesday afternoon).

So we asked Kayak and Expedia to break it down for us for holiday travel specifically, which has its own set of rules and tips, in terms of when to buy and when to fly.

According to Kayak, on average the cheapest airfare for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s are found between September and mid-October. Starting in late October, airfares increased by 17% for Thanksgiving, 51% for Christmas and 25% for New Year’s Eve. For those wanting to go international, try to book sooner rather than later; if last year is any indication, airfare steadily increased as departures got closer.

Jeremy Boore, a Travel Analyst for, recommends purchasing your Christmas tickets around the end of September to early October, once domestic ticket prices have stabilized following fluctuation early in the month (if you wait, you’re looking at average round trip ticket prices starting around $400). International travelers have more flexibility, he notes, and can wait until the beginning of November to book flights.

So you’re looking at flights and need help whittling down the options? Here are the best days to fly during each holiday.

For domestic travelers looking for Thanksgiving flights, the best departure days are Monday and Tuesday, with airfares roughly 15 to 23% below average, according to Kayak (Expedia’s Boore seconds a Monday departure). If you return on Thanksgiving Day, Friday or the following Tuesday, you’re looking at savings of more than 20% (if you want to get really thrifty, fly in and out on Thanksgiving Day and save up to 36%).

Kayak recommends departing as close to Christmas Day as possible (like even Christmas Eve, notes Expedia’s Boore) and try to depart and return during the weekends around Christmas, where fares were up to 24% above average last year). Same goes for New Year’s.

When To Buy An Airline Ticket #cheap #airline #fare

When to buy an airline ticket

    [Voice of Kristin Arnold, reporter]

Take VO: Before you take off. you can land the best deal on your airfare. When you’re talking tickets, timing is everything.  Here’s the rundown.

Departure: First and foremost, you need to buy your ticket a good 14 days in advance to score a good price.  To get the cheapest seats, before they sell out, buy a month or two in advance.  But don’t buy too early. since most airlines don’t start releasing cheaper seats until 3-4 months in advance for domestic flights and 4-5 months before international travel.

[Rick Seaney, CEO of talking] “Most people are procrastinators. They book inside of 30 days of departure. In fact, most tickets are sold inside those days.  If you think about it from an airlines perspective, they have to hold back these seats for high paying business travelers. They’ve got to have a lot of trust that those business travelers will come in the last 14 days. And so, you really need to be buying that ticket no later than 14 days before departure.”

[Continue voice of Kristin Arnold] Business Class: Become business minded when buying your ticket. More airline tickets are sold from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. so airlines offer their best prices when people are more actively shopping.  Purchase volume is the highest on Tuesdays…which makes it the cheapest day of the week to buy.

Turbulence free Tuesday’s: According to, Tuesday is also one of cheapest days to fly. along with Wednesday and Saturday. because they are the slowest air travel days.  The cheapest time to fly is usually the first flight out in the morning and the last flight out at night.

[Rick Seaney talking on camera]”If you at least take half your trip on those days, you get half the benefit. So, you know, leave on a Wednesday come back on a Sunday when you want to come back. Or leave on a Tuesday and come back on a Saturday. You’ll end up saving a lot of money.”

[Continue voice of Kristin Arnold] Don’t forget about the overnight “red eye” flights. another cheap option as they are neither comfortable nor convenient.

Flight data:  Just like you use your computer to track ticket prices, so do the airlines. In fact, if an airline notices that cheap seat sales are picking up, they can instantly raise prices. and drop them if sales are lagging. Since airfares can change all the time. taking advantage of email alerts offered by a variety of travel websites and airlines can help you get the best airfare bargains.

Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Here’s the good news: travel insurance covers more than it used to. The bad news is, travel insurance is more complicated than ever. Here are the ins and outs of insurance.

    By Sascha Segan

Here’s the good news: travel insurance covers more than it used to. Since I first wrote about trip insurance in Frommer’s Fly Safe, Fly Smart in 2001, travel insurers have come up with policies that protect you if you lose your job, if you’re ordered to work instead of taking a vacation, and even policies that let you “cancel for any reason.” (Those last ones are pretty popular.) Waivers of pre-existing conditions can let smart shoppers prevent their claims from being denied.

The bad news is, travel insurance is more complicated than ever. With so many options, and with policies written in a language that only sometimes resembles English, it can be nightmare figuring out what you actually need.

“I don’t know how people without insurance backgrounds figure out insurance,” said Steve Dasseos, president of ( ).

Here’s our stab at explaining the ins and outs of insurance.

    Do You Need Travel Insurance?

The first thing to ask is whether you actually need travel insurance.

“Every person has their own level of risk tolerance,” said John Cook, president of ( ).

Travel insurance comes in two major flavors: medical and “trip cancellation” (which includes baggage and car insurance.) Travel medical insurance is potentially the most critical (in fact, some countries won’t let you in without it), but you may already be covered. It’s time to have a heart-to-heart with your own health insurance company about what happens if you’re injured overseas. Will they pay your medical expenses? If you’re heading somewhere without a decent health-care system — will they pay for a medical evacuation? If something goes wrong, how can you reach them from abroad? What’s the amount you’re covered up to? Medical evacuations can cost $50,000 or more, so it’s important to make sure you don’t max out your own medical plan.

You probably already have car insurance, but supplemental car insurance can prevent accidents from raising your home car insurance premium, insurance brokers said. Yes, this sounds like a far-fetched way for them to sell more insurance, but as Dasseos says, it all comes down to your risk tolerance.

Trip cancellation insurance is the thorniest to deal with because it has so many ins and outs. You can get coverage for trip cancellation, which means not going on your trip at all. Trip delay or interruption coverage covers being stuck in the airport or missing a connection to a cruise. Baggage coverage gives you money if a travel supplier loses your luggage.

Even there, you should check around for existing coverage. Some credit cards, such as the American Express Platinum Card, come with baggage coverage; you may also have some travel baggage coverage as part of your homeowner’s policy.

Depending on the coverage you’re looking for, insurance should cost between 3-8% of your trip price, according to travel insurance comparison websites. For a $4000 trip booked through, that means prices ranging from $130-282, depending on the amount of coverage you’re looking for.

You can learn a lot more by checking out our companion article, “10 Questions to Ask Your Travel Insurer.”

Who To Buy Travel Insurance From

You can buy travel insurance from an insurance company, a broker, a travel agent or a tour operator.

Third-party brokers who deal with many companies can give you a good independent perspective. Dasseos’, for instance, compares plans from six different insurers. Other top brokers include, ( ), and ( ). Just like with a mortgage broker and unlike with a travel agent, the insurers pay the broker’s commission, so you don’t pay more than by booking direct.

Insurance companies themselves can present a variety of plans, but of course you’ve got to compare the companies’ plans against each other on your own. Try our list of top insurance companies and our questions to ask your insurance company to start. There are some bad insurance companies and even fake insurance companies out there, and we’d like to make sure you go with someone reliable.

We’re a bit uneasy about trip insurance sold by online travel agents, tour operators, and especially cruise lines. These policies can be incomplete and poorly explained. A “buy travel insurance now” check-box on a website doesn’t give you the proper warning about things the insurance doesn’t cover, and insurance sold with cruises may not cover the planes, trains and automobiles you take to get to and from your ship.

    When to Buy Travel Insurance

You should buy travel insurance right after you book your trip — preferably on the same day. As soon as you pay for your trip, the clock starts ticking on the pre-existing condition waiver. You want a pre-existing condition waiver, as it cancels out an administrative hell that results in more than 20% of claims being denied, according to’s John Cook. Some travel insurers give you 14 days after you started to book your trip to get the waiver, but some only give you 24 hours. To get the most options, think of booking travel insurance as something you do at the same time as booking your trip.

If you’re a frequent traveler, travel insurance companies also offer multi-trip and annual policies that may be cheaper than buying a policy for each trip.

    Travel Medical Insurance

If you need travel medical insurance, you need to choose between “primary” and “secondary” coverage. Primary coverage effectively replaces your existing medical insurance, with your existing insurance picking up the slack after the travel insurance runs out. Secondary coverage lets your existing insurance take the lead, with the travel insurance plan covering deductibles, co-pays, and anything your primary insurance company won’t handle.

Primary plans have a lot less paperwork involved, Dasseos said; secondary plans can take up to eight months to pay out.

Policies vary in terms of the amount they cover, whether they include dental work, and whether they can advance payment to hospitals that require proof of payment before they treat you. In Western Europe, you’ll probably want a lot of coverage — hospitals can be expensive — but “emergency medical transportation” isn’t as much of a concern. In the jungles of Honduras, though, a $100,000 helicopter ride to the nearest quality hospital might just save your life. (You’ll rarely need more than $100,000 of evacuation coverage, Jim Grace, president of InsureMyTrip said.)

Also, beware the dreaded “pre-existing condition.” Pre-existing conditions are any medical condition you (or sometimes other people) have been treated for within a set time period, generally anywhere between 3 and 6 months. If you can’t get a waiver of pre-existing conditions, you need to think hard about every doctor’s visit you’ve had, every prescription you’ve filled, and every family member who’s already sick, because events resulting from those things may not be covered on your policy. And if you think you might cancel because Grandma is looking frail, her pre-existing conditions may come into play, too. It’s really best to get a waiver.

    Trip Cancellation Insurance

The biggest news in the travel insurance industry in the past few years is the “cancel for any reason” policy, which lets you get at least some of your money back — usually 75-80% — without jumping through the usual hoops of “named perils.” Such policies are expensive, but they’re now up to a quarter of the policies Dasseos sells because they’re so easy to use, he said.

If you don’t feel like a platinum-plated policy, you can assemble your own deal from parts — but you need to look very closely at those parts. Cancellation policies can cover cancellation, lost luggage, baggage delay, travel delay (being stuck at the airport and needing a hotel), or missed connections (being stuck at the airport and missing your cruise).

But most of these policies are “named peril” policies, which means they cover the reasons they cover — and no other reasons. Some of the reasons can be surprising: Access America’s BizPack, for instance, lets you cancel if your boss demands that you work instead of going on vacation. But you have to look at trip cancellation policies with an eagle eye to see what they don’t cover. For instance, policies may not cover cancellations if you’re sick with H1N1 flu, because it’s been declared a pandemic by the WHO and some policies exclude pandemic illnesses.

The perils also vary from insurer to insurer. Access America lets you cancel your trip if you get laid off, provided you’ve been working in the same place for three years. But over at Travel Guard, you only need to have held your job for a year before being laid off to get your money back. That could make the difference between an accepted claim and a denied one.

The Prime Time to Find Airfares Has Changed; How Early Does the Lowest Price Pop Up?

    Oct. 22, 2014 1:36 p.m. ET

Looking for an airfare deal? Your odds improve if you buy on the weekend.

Prices to cities that attract business travel, including Chicago, fluctuate more than prices to leisure markets, according to the firm Hopper. Getty Images

One factor behind the change: Airline executives come into work Monday looking to raise fares, not discount them with sales to fill seats. Just this week airlines put through a $2 each-way across-the-board fare hike. even though prices for oil—the largest expense for airlines—have been plunging. Prices are still going up due to increasing demand for the limited number of available seats.

When searching for the lowest fare, don’t give up on Tuesdays. It’s the day with the most frequent price drops, leaving the door open for good deals.

Yapta Inc. a firm that alerts travelers and travel managers to declines in ticket prices, says 21% of the price drops it has recorded happened on Tuesday and 19% on Wednesday. That’s often the result of fare sales launched early in the week. Airline pricing executives say the historic pattern has been for airlines to add up sales over the weekend and decide on Monday whether to stimulate purchases with discounts they tout in ads in Tuesday’s newspapers.

Tuesday also turns out to be the busiest day for domestic ticket sales and the cheapest of the workweek, though all weekdays hover around $500.

Andrew Watterson, vice president of network planning and performance at Southwest Airlines. LUV 0.13 % says carriers still go out with sales and emails on Tuesdays. But many stay open over the weekend due to increased shopping by leisure travelers, especially as tablets make airfare shopping more accessible. “Tablets are changing consumer purchases quite a bit,” he says. “Customers have more personal time on weekends to look for personal travel.”

The ARC study, which looked at tickets sold in the U.S. through online and traditional travel agencies but not airlines directly, also showed that the cheapest time to buy domestic trips was 57 days—about two months—before departure. Most people don’t buy that early: The average purchase date was just over one month before departure. By then prices have started their climb.

The average domestic round-trip, including taxes and government fees, was $496. Yet 57 days before a flight, the lowest average was 19% lower, at $402.

International ticket prices didn’t fluctuate much between 10 months and three months before departure. Through that seven-month period, the average price of tickets sold range between about $1,000 and $1,150. Then about three months before departure, airlines start raising prices.

Most people book too late to get the lowest price, of course. International tickets get sold, on average, two months before departure. Average cost: $1,368.

Hopper, a Cambridge, Mass. firm that analyzes prices and flight searches in giant reservation systems, says the average consumer spends 12 days shopping for airline tickets. Consumers watch prices bounce up and down, or at least hope they’ll drop, even though increases are more common. On average, prices rise 5% in that typical 12-day shopping window, Hopper said. Leisure markets like Hawaii and Florida tend to have more stable prices, while business-oriented destinations like Washington, D.C. and Chicago have more price volatility, Hopper notes.

One tip for uncertain fare-watchers: The Transportation Department requires that airlines give refunds for tickets canceled within 24 hours of a purchase, or offer a 24-hour hold, for tickets bought more than a week before departure. Booking sites don’t usually mention the free cancellation prominently, but if the price does suddenly go lower, you can cancel one reservation and rebook without a penalty fee. Delta, United, US Airways and JetBlue JBLU -1.90 % offer the 24-hour free cancellation; American doesn’t but lets you hold a reservation for 24 hours without paying.

To get the cheapest tickets, you have to plan even further in advance than you used to. In a 2012 study, ARC found the lowest prices for domestic tickets at 42 days before departure, over two weeks closer than the current 57-day threshold. For the past several years airlines have consolidated and cut capacity, creating more demand for each seat, especially as the economy has rebounded. That’s meant prices start higher and go up faster.

“Some of those lowest-priced tickets sold out faster than in the past,” says Chuck Thackston, ARC’s data specialist.

For holiday travel, airlines stay one step ahead of shoppers, and the cheapest days to buy have already passed, according to Orbitz. The travel seller says the best time to buy for Thanksgiving was Oct. 10. The sweet spot for Christmas was even earlier, Oct. 8.

Orbitz says it only sold half of the tickets it will sell for Thanksgiving by Oct. 16; it expects to sell 75% by Nov. 7. But a significant number of procrastinators will purchase tickets in the last three weeks leading up to the holiday. So far this year prices have been up 2% over last year’s prices.

For Christmas travel, prices have been up about 5% this year compared with last year, Orbitz says. That’s well before most people commit. Orbitz doesn’t anticipate reaching the halfway point on Christmas ticket sales until Nov. 9.

If it’s any consolation, booking early rarely saves much around the holidays. Hopper says last year prices for Thanksgiving travel actually didn’t vary much until 10 days before the holiday. In general, airlines know they’ll fill their flights so prices start high and stay high.

#how to get cheap airline tickets

5 Steps to buy really cheap airline tickets

How to buy cheap airline tickets

    5. Find the best site with maximum amount of airline companies

Usually, when you plan to buy cheap airline tickets yourself, you first go to a sites that are advertising such as :

    and other ones.

Therefore, the first thing you need to do is to decide on the site where you will look for a ticket.

The first thing you have to understand is that on these sites you will just look for the ticket, and do not buy it!

I strongly recommend to look for tickets on the site:

This is not advertising, just it is easier to follow the instructions listed below on this site.

    4. The season of your trip

Next, you should define the season.

If you are planning your vacation in a warm country and are looking for cheap airline tickets for a beach holiday, you should choose the low season.

In general, countries that are intended for a beach holiday, the low season means absolutely not a bad season.

For example, if you are planning a trip to Thailand, but always read that in Thailand is low season it s the rainy season, do not believe it.

In tropical countries, such as Thailand, it rains mostly at night and it will not affect the rest of your experience, on the contrary it will greatly affect the cost of air tickets.

    3. Time to buy cheap airline tickets

In general, in all the articles on the internet wrote that while a significant effect on the purchase of cheap flights. But no one says exactly when to buy cheap airline tickets .

The answer to this question is very simple. Airlines generally try to sell tickets at the peak of the season. Usually these tickets bought in advance travel agencies.

Therefore, if you have significant time to plan a trip, you better buy tickets for half a year or even be 3 months before your trip it can save up 50 to 30 percent of the cost of air tickets.

    2. Look all month offers for buy chep airline tickets

This point is almost the most important in the purchase of airline tickets. Few know that some sites provide complete analytical data on the cost of air tickets for a month or even a year.

We can consider this site as an example, which I recommend to you.

How to buy cheap airline tickets pic3

Here you have the secret of how I got such a cheap airline ticket price!

    1. You can buy cheap airline tickets only directly from the airline s holder site

Now on to the most important.

Very often, the sites that airline tickets, do cheat on their value. I personally use these sites, just search for tickets, but I buy tickets only on the airline s website.

Besides, it is very common for sites to search for tickets, the information is irrelevant. In the future, you may have a problem with a ticket bought at such sites.

I do not want to do anti-advertising sites to find tickets. But I suggest you at least check the existence of tickets to the airline s website, not to make a mistake when buying.

Please, pay attention! At the time of this writing and reading at the time, the information about this example may change. While I publish this article, and you read it, someone can already buy your cheap air ticket!

But, if you ll follow these instructions, I promise you, you will be able to buy cheap airline ticket. saving 30 to 50% of its value! For example, I followed these instructions when I planned my first solo travel to Thailand .

How much car insurance should you buy? #car #insurance #coverage, #liability

Second, you need enough car insurance to protect your life from turning into a living hell if you have a car accident. That can be as easy as buying the minimum coverage. Or it can be much more complicated.

We’ll walk you through our guide on figuring this out.

Who should buy minimum levels of liability car insurance?

    • Minimum liability is rarely advisable, but if you can’t afford more, it’s better than no insurance.
    • If you have no savings or assets, minimum liability coverage may suffice.

In most states the minimum liability required by your state is not enough to pay for serious injuries or to replace a newer car. It is only enough to drive legally.

If you own only the clothes on your back and a very old car, you can get by with just the minimum levels of liability mandated by your state. That s because you’re probably what is known as “judgment-proof.” You may lose if someone decides to take you to court to pay for an accident you cause, but you have no real assets to take.

If you have savings or a home or even expensive jewelry and valuable collectibles, you are not judgment-proof. And you need more coverage.

To help you decide how much liability insurance you need, we’ve created three liability insurance levels as a rough guide. Levels of coverage offered will vary by state and by insurer. Liability insurance will not repair your own car.

    In the levels below:

    • The first two numbers refer to bodily injury liability, which pays the hospital bills of anyone you injure.
    • The first number is the per-person limit.
    • The second is the per-accident limit.
    • The third number is the property damage liability limit, which would repair or replace the car of anyone you hit.

50/100/50: This level of coverage is recommended for those who have an older car, few assets, don t drive much and are on a tight budget, for instance college students and retirees who are downsizing.

100/300/100: This is the level most financial experts say is appropriate for middle-income earners with a typical level of savings, adequate in most circumstances. The cost of liability insurance, once you have bought the basic levels, does not increase exponentially. Moving to 100/300/100 will not cost twice as much as 50/100/50. In an analysis of rates, found that it costs just $96 more a year, on average.

250/500/100: If you own an expensive home or have saved diligently, you may be worth millions even though you do not consider yourself rich. We would suggest supplementing even this high level of coverage with an umbrella liability policy that extends your protection by $1 million or more. It s relatively cheap.

Who should buy uninsured motorist car insurance?

    • If you have your own health insurance and you have purchased collision coverage, you may be able to skip uninsured motorist coverages if your state allows.
    • It is a good idea to keep uninsured motorist coverages if you can afford to, because they can minimize your financial losses from deductibles and coverage caps.

Your state may require that you buy uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, which pays your hospital bills if you are hit by an uninsured driver. Your state may require only that you be offered this coverage but allow you to turn it down.

If you buy this coverage, it typically will come in the same amounts as your own liability coverage.

Uninsured motorist coverage costs an average of $83 a year, according to a CarInsurance rates analysis.

A few states also require uninsured motorist property damage, which usually pays for some — but not all — of the damage to your own car. It doesn t cover hit-and-run accidents in most states, though.

Do you need comprehensive and collision coverage?

    • Yes, if your car is less than 10 years old.
    • Yes, if you can’t afford to repair or replace your car.
    • Yes, if you live in an area prone to flooding, hail, tornadoes or animal strikes.

Comprehensive insurance pays for damage to your car from severe weather, fire, collisions with animals and theft. Collisions pays to repair your car if you cause an accident.

This is where car insurance for a 10 year old car comes into play. If your car is less than 10 years old, you should consider buying comprehensive and collision coverage. You should also carry comprehensive and collision insurance if your car is 10 years old or older, but worth more than $3,000, or if you can t afford to repair or replace it.

If you owe money on your car, your lender requires you to have collision and comprehensive coverage, which would repair or replace your car. Liability insurance pays only for others cars.

You must choose a deductible amount for collision and comprehensive coverages. Damage below this amount is your responsibility to fix.

We recommend that you keep deductibles low while you are still making payments on a car. Once the car is paid off, build an emergency fund and raise your deductible to match it.

Comprehensive costs an average of $172 a year, collision costs an average of $488 annually, according to s rate analysis.

Do you need medical payments or personal injury protection?

    • Yes, if you don’t have health insurance.
    • Yes, if you can’t afford or don’t have the savings to live without a loss of income due to injury.

Your state, especially if it is a no-fault state, may require that you buy personal injury protection so that your injuries in a car accident are always covered up to your limits, no matter whose fault the accident was. It usually includes coverage for lost wages as well.

Medical payments coverage is required by a few states but is optional in most, paying medical expenses up to your limits. If you don t have your own health insurance coverage, you should consider this coverage. If you have a high-deductible health plan, medical payments may help pay the deductible.

Personal injury protection costs an average of $198 yearly. Medical payments costs an average of $22 a year, according to s rate analysis.

How should you save money on car insurance?

In order of impact and potential savings, we suggest the following steps for drivers trying to save money on their car insurance bills:

    • Shop around. You will see that the rates major insurers charge the same driver in the same car can vary by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. See how much average car insurance rates can differ in your neighborhood by entering your ZIP code into our comparison tool.
    • Look for car insurance discounts .
    • Consider a named driver exclusion if a member of your household has a high-risk driver history.
    • Raise your deductibles.
    • Drop collision and comprehensive coverage altogether if you own your car outright.
    • Drop other optional coverages such as uninsured motorist or medical payments.
    • Reduce the amount of liability coverage you are buying.

How Far in Advance Should I Buy My Airline Tickets? #flight

    #buy airline tickets

How Far in Advance Should I Buy My Airline Tickets?

Question by Mark Hastings, San Jose, Calif.

A: When to book flights is a question that torments even the most experienced of travelers. Who hasn’t sat in front of the computer wondering: Do I wait for a better deal, or is this the best I’m going to see?

There are no hard-and-fast rules for hitting the right booking window. A recent report from online travel agency CheapAir found that, historically, the lowest average fares have been available seven weeks before departure. Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), which manages airline ticket sales for U.S. travel agencies, conducted a similar study and located the best airfares six weeks prior to flying. But that window changes dramatically depending on where you are traveling—and when.

    Domestic Tickets

“There’s such a thing as booking too early,” says Rick Seaney, CEO and cofounder of online research tool FareCompare. “Airlines don’t really begin managing their domestic flights until about three months in advance—that’s when they start releasing the more affordable seats.” The sweet spot, he says, lies between three months and six weeks in advance. Recent data from Kayak supports this. The airfare aggregator looked at a year’s worth of searches and found that six months before departure, domestic ticket prices were about 20 percent higher than the lowest fares. They started dropping three months out and hit a low three to seven weeks before departure. Whatever you do, don’t wait until the last week, when prices shoot up—by about 25 percent, according to Kayak.

    Far-Flung Flights

For long-haul tickets, start your search early. Kayak’s data located the best average fares for Asian flights a full nine to ten months out; they drop again (though not as low) between three and four month in advance. For South American tickets, the ideal booking window was around six months before departure. For African trips, the site found that prices started to fall about three months out. Interestingly, they didn’t bottom out until about five weeks before departure. Of course, these are all average prices. If you’re hoping to catch a fare sale to a farther-flung destination, focus your search between five and two months out, when they usually appear, Seaney says. The best plan for long-haul shopping: search for fares early to get a general sense of prices and sign up for a fare-watching service—Airfarewatchdog, CheapAir, and FareCompare all have good ones. You’ll know to book when the right price comes along.

    Summer Trips to Europe

You’ll have to plan in advance to get the best tickets to Europe. When ARC crunched the numbers for travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day last year, it found the lowest average fares to Europe a full 31 weeks before departure. Seaney recommends beginning your search around four to five months out. (That means now.) And don’t get caught in magical thinking: sales on summer airfare to Europe are rare. According to Jeff Klee, CEO and cofounder of CheapAir, they usually occur when there’s an increase in capacity (i.e. new flights or routes). But if you can’t be flexible about your dates or destination, you likely won’t be able to take advantage of these deals. If you do have some flexibility, the booking window decreases and the fares drop for travel in the spring or fall—outside of the school holidays.

    Winter Caribbean and Ski Getaways

There’s no use waiting for fare sales here. High demand and limited airlift mean that prices for winter flights to Caribbean islands and smaller ski-country airports usually don’t fluctuate much—and rise dramatically fairly early. Looking at last winter’s economy-class fares from the United States to the Caribbean islands, ARC found the lowest average fares 21 weeks before departure. That jibes with Seaney’s advice to book both Caribbean and ski getaways about four to five months before your trip. The exceptions: flights to Denver, Salt Lake City, and other large airports serving ski destinations. You’ll have extra time to book because the airports have more capacity.

    Holiday Travel

The earlier the better, once again. Last year, analysts with CheapAir tracked domestic airfares for more than 11,000 markets for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s travel. Notably, for all three holidays average ticket prices hit a low in early June. They fluctuated throughout the rest of the summer and early fall, but by the end of September they were steadily rising. Not everyone can plan a winter holiday in June, of course. But if you’re considering going from somewhere cold to somewhere warm, Klee advises getting the tickets as soon as possible. A similar principle is at work for spring-break travel. Tickets to Florida and other popular warm-weather destinations start rising early—and tend not to vary. Seaney recommends planning these trips five months in advance. “Airlines are really good at knowing when an airport’s local school districts are on spring break, and will adjust airfares accordingly,” he cautions.

Of course, all of these booking windows are estimates and should be taken as guidelines rather than rule of law. As George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog, says: “If there were an established best time to book, airlines would identify it and hike fares accordingly.” Consider yourself warned.

    By the Numbers

$1,284 : Lowest average economy-class airfare to Europe last summer, booked 31 weeks in advance.

$589: Lowest average economy-class airfare to the Caribbean last winter, booked 21 weeks in advance.
