The Lazy Wanderer in Provence

By Beth on 4 Nov 2015

Rating for this holiday

What a pleasure to embark on a walking tour where all of the logistical decisions and arrangements have been made for you, all of the routes figured out in advance, such that all you have to do is show up and enjoy. I was made to feel so welcome by my hosts, and imagined myself at times a princess in a chateau (even though I did not stay in a chateau), or a lady in a country manor house circa 1870. My time was entirely my own, whether I chose to spend an hour taking photographs in one village or whether I chose to sit on a rock and write in my journal before making my descent into the valley and continuing on the walk. I enjoyed the perfect combination of nature, village life, country life, exercise, solitude, and the right amount of community with people from other countries on my 6-day adventure. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Even in October, the Alta Via Val Venosta is spectacular

6 Tips for Traveling by Rail in Europe with Kids #cheap

6 Tips for Traveling by Rail in Europe with Kids

Train travel in Europe is almost always affordable, comfortable, and safe, making it the ideal way to get around Europe with kids. Given the choice, I ll opt to sit back and relax instead of attempting to navigate by car in a foreign country any day, and my kids would thank me for it. On trains, kids are not confined full time to seats like in cars or on planes and the scenery is much easier to see out the window. All this said, traveling by rail in Europe can be confusing. Here s what you need to know when planning to travel in Europe by rail with kids. Here are some ideas for finding a baby sitter while traveling

6 Tips for Traveling by Rail in Europe with Kids

1. You can travel by train in Europe with rail passes or specific destination tickets. Which to buy? It can depend. In rural areas and small towns, often non-reservable, or open destination tickets are the only option. If nothing else, plan for these accordingly. For some high speed trains, even families with applicable rail passes must purchase reservable tickets. Generally speak, however, if you re traveling from city to city or country to country, you re almost always better off with a rail pass. Note: France is an exception. Learn more about rail travel in France .

2. Plan your itinerary before purchasing tickets. This seems like a no-brainer, but with rail passes, it s possible to purchase Global or Select country passes, then decide where to go later. While spontaneity still has a place in travel with kids, you can t compare ticket pricing options effectively if you don t know where you re going. Start at country rail travel sites like TrenItalia for Italy, and add up the price of your tickets a la carte. Then head to Eurail and see if a Global, Select. or Country pass will save you money (and allow for some spontaneity). Or, you can let Rail Europe do the work for you: you put in your itinerary, and they decide which rail options suit you best. Rail Europe is generally trusted among travelers to provide competitive pricing, so this is a viable option. When mapping out your itinerary and selecting your rail pass, keep in mind that you ll need to pay even for countries you re only passing through, not stopping in.

3. Decide whether to travel first class or second class. Second class is fine (think airline coach), but first class is not much extra per ticket and includes various perks such as wifi or light meals, depending on the train. Often, only first class tickets are reservable, worth the extra price for the peace of mind alone. However: if you have teens, you may be forced to travel second class or pay extra for adult passes. Why? Youth ages 13-25 are eligible for discounted pass prices with Eurail (approximately 35% less than adult), but only on second class tickets. If your family will be traveling first class, teens will need adult tickets (or you could make them sit alone in second class, I suppose, which might be warranted… kidding, of course). The good news: children ages 4-12 are always 50% discounted, no matter the class, and children under age 4 are always free.

4. Decide on your number of travel days. When selecting which Eurail pass is right for you, you ll need to select between a number of travel days. Bear in mind: these days do not refer to the number of days you re on vacation, but the number of actual rail travel days. You can save considerably by traveling by rail only once every 3-4 days instead of every day, and your kids will feel more rested as well.

5. Bring snacks, toys, and games for train travel. A train day can be a day to rest and recoup after busy travel and sightseeing days. Let kids spread out with games and books, or use the electronic plug-ins you ll have at your disposal in first class. Bringing food on the train is always cheaper than purchasing on-board, and the luggage and carry-on allowances are much less strict than during air travel, making packing a meal easy.

6. Know the difference between sleep compartments. Overnight trains are a great way to save daylight for sightseeing, and are a great adventure for kids. However, it s helpful to know what to expect. In second class, you usually have the choice between sleeping compartments (small compartments of bunks that are gender specific) or couchettes, which are cabins with 4-6 beds that are non-gender specific (perfect for families). In first class, you ll almost always encounter single or double sleeping compartments, which means more room, but the necessity for families to split up for children to be accompanied by adults.

Baltimore ranked fourth ugliest city by Travel and Leisure readers

It seems that many people don’t feel the same way.

The readers of Travel and Leisure ranked Baltimoreans the fourth most unattractive people in the United States.

We trailed Detroit, Memphis and Oklahoma City on the homeliness scale.

Travel+Leisure readers surely had their blinders on when they named Baltimore among the cities with the least attractive people. What about Stacy Keibler? Or, or whoever. Here are 10 celebrities and the ugly cities they represent. (Michelle Deal-Zimmerman)

The post doesn’t explain much — just that we’re kooky and like sports and dive bars.

You can watch them fly their freak flags at the high-ranking dive bars, it says.

So now you’re inviting people to gawk at our ugly faces and our freak flags ?

THANKS A LOT, TRAVEL AND LEISURE.

Did you forget that Baltimore is the home town of Jada Pinkett and Josh Charles and Stacy freakin’ Keibler, for Pete’s sake?

The cities with the most attractive residents — if you’re going to let these guys be the judges of such things — are Miami, San Diego, Charleston, S.C. Los Angeles and Providence, R.I.

Two Air France flights from U.S. diverted by bomb threats

Emergency personnel are shown on the tarmac at Salt Lake City International Airport in this photograph taken by passenger Keith Rosso from a seat inside Air France flight 65, November 17, 2015.

    Reuters/Keith Rosso/Handout via Reuters T

LOS ANGELES Two Air France flights bound for Paris from the United States were diverted for several hours on Tuesday following anonymous bomb threats, and more than 700 passengers and crew were safely taken off the planes, officials said.

Flight 65, an Airbus A-380 that departed from Los Angeles, landed safely in Salt Lake City, where passengers and crew were escorted into the terminal, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said. The Salt Lake Tribune, citing an airport official, said it was carrying 497 passengers and crew.

The FBI said in a statement that no evidence was found aboard the plane “which would lend credibility to the threats” against the flight.

The airport said operations were not affected, and local Utah media including broadcaster KSL reported that passengers had been cleared to reboard and resume their journey.

Keith Rosso, a passenger who tweeted a photo shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles, said he was “thankful to everyone who has been working to keep everyone calm and make sure air travel is safe. Hope to be taking off again shortly.”

A separate Boeing 777 that left Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. Flight 55, was diverted to Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia, which said 262 passengers and crew members had safely disembarked.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Halifax said on its Twitter feed that police dogs searched the plane for evidence of explosives, but no details were disclosed.

In a brief statement, Air France said both flights had been the “subjects of anonymous threats received after their respective take-offs.”

“As a precautionary measure and to conduct all necessary security checks, Air France, applying the safety regulations in force, decided to request the landings of both aircraft,” the airline said in its statement.

It said authorities inspected the aircraft, passengers and luggage, adding: “An investigation will be led by the authorities to identify the source of the telephone call.”

Security officials have been on high alert since Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for attacks last week in Paris that killed 129 people. Russia has said the group was also responsible for the downing on Oct. 31 of a plane returning to St. Petersburg from the Sharm al-Sheikh resort in Egypt, killing all 224 on board.

The incidents did not appear to be causing flight delays or cancellations elsewhere.

According to data on flight tracking website flightradar24.com, flights operated by both Air France and other airlines appear to be taking off and landing normally at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Vietnam Travel Agent – Do Best Tours by Vietnam Travel Packages

    #travel vietnam
    #

    By Plane

In Vietnam, there are four international airports in total. If you want a direct flight, e. g. from the U.S. or Europe to Vietnam, you can either fly to HCMC (with the biggest airport, the Tan Son Nhat International Airport) or to Hanoi (with the second biggest one, the Nội Bài International Airport).

Alternatively, you can take a flight to China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan or Singapore, and get a connecting flight to Vietnam:

Da Nang has an International Airport (flights from/to Seoul/South Korea, Bangkok/Thailand, Singapore).

Can Tho Airport in South Vietnam provides international service, too (flights from/to Bangkok/Thailand, Tokyo/Japan, Phnom Penh/Cambodia).

Phu Quoc Island now has its own International Airport.

If you buy a ticket for a flight to Vietnam in a nearby country, you might get it for half the price of a Vietnam Airlines’ flight. However, during holidays it will be hard to get a reservation. Especially during Tet you should make reservations in advance. You can also travel into Vietnam overland or on the waterway from one of the adjacent countries.

    Find cheap flights

How to find the cheapest flights

Most of us who travel a lot have one particular favorite airfare search engine. Since the invention of aggregator sites like Kayak.com, you can check quite a few sources all over the internet with just one search, but study after study has shown that even aggregator sites sometimes miss the lowest fares. You have to check at least 3 flight-search sites to be confident that you are getting the best deal possible.

Step 1 Enter your travel dates in the search box above.

Step 2 Click on Get Best Providers and the system will find all the best sites for your trip, which are most likely to offer the best fares.

Step 3 You ll see names and logos of all the best search sites, and with a single click you can send your trip details to each of them. Choose your favorite flight-search site, plus at least two others. Each will open in its own window, and seconds later you ll find the lowest price for each of them. This way you ll at least know the lowest possible fare for your trip, but of course you ll want to pay attention to the total journey length and possible layovers on the way. Sometimes it s worth paying a bit more for a nonstop flight.

    For the cheapest international flights

    >>>Find international travel deals at the lowest prices online

Now through December 1, 2012, get an extra US$10 on Vayama (link above) off using coupon code: Fall10

You may not be familiar with the website that is somehow able to get even lower fares than pretty much all the others, but only for international flights. We ve used them many times ourselves and often they will get the same flights you see elsewhere for 3 to 5% cheaper than the other sites. For an expensive flight, it s worth checking.

Tucan Travel Australia, Tours to Peru – an independent review by

    #tucan travel
    #

    Tucan Travel UK

Tucan has been leading travellers and exploring the depths of South America since the early 80’s. Having specialised in Latin America for so many years they have taken their award winning formula and expanded their tours to adventure destinations worldwide. Over the years they have earned an excellent reputation for providing quality trips that are excellent value for money. They are one of the best tour companies in the world in their specialist styles of travel.

Tucan offers a selection of different types of trip. We have summarised them briefly below (information provided by Tucan):

    Discovery Tours

When Tucan Travel started operating Discovery tours five years ago we were certain this travel style would prove popular, and we were not mistaken. This travel style grew from an emerging trend of travellers who wanted to visit the region in comfort and security but with an adventurous spirit. Discovery Tours offer clients the flexibility of private vehicle travel with the comfort of hotel accommodation. The itineraries have many inclusions but are well structured to also allow the traveller plenty of free time.

Discovery Tours are ideal for travellers who may be concerned about safety, enjoy vehicle-based travel and like the comforts of hotel accommodation. Advantages of Discovery Tour travel include having the services of both a tour leader and a driver, the flexibility to stop for photos and breaks when the group chooses and the ability to store their extra luggage and souvenirs on the vehicle.

    Adventure Tours

Our Adventure Tours are continually evolving and have become our most popular touring style. Over the years we have redesigned our itineraries according to client feedback. We take into consideration time to relax after long travelling days, we choose hotels based on their safety, cleanliness and central locations and we work hard to ensure our clients have the opportunity to experience the best a country has to offer. Adventure Tours allow travellers more authentic interaction with the local population through travelling on a variety of local transport.

Adventure Tours are particularly enjoyable for those who see the journey as the destination. Travellers who consider a local market the perfect place to sit and absorb its culture, or a bus journey through the countryside with a few rural animals on board a laugh. Adventure travellers may have taken Spanish lessons before they travelled, spent hours on the internet researching new destinations and are now infatuated with travelling.

    Overland Expeditions

Overland Expeditions attract a distinctive clientele: genuine travel addicts who realise that South America and Africa are huge continents which deserve as much time as they can possibly afford to give them. These tours run from 6 to 171 days in length and travel on our modern and comfortable fleet of overland vehicles. Clients combine hotel/hostel accommodation in the larger cities with camping in the smaller towns and national parks. Tucan Travel offer the highest quality equipment, the best overland vehicles around, a large support network and a dedicated and experienced crew, making our Overland Expeditions the best in South America and Africa.

Due to their longer durations and camping element, Overland Expeditions generally attract younger travellers. Some are on career breaks, others have finished tertiary education and are on a round-the-world trip. But one thing is certain, Overland Expedition travellers know what they want to see and theyre here to enjoy it – even if it takes a little time.

    Budget Expeditions

Budget Expeditions was born in 2003 as the youth brand of Tucan Travel, with carefully designed itineraries for 18 to 35s who want to explore the world but dont want to pay the earth. Because we offer so many optional excursions, Budget Expeditions are an excellent choice for price-conscious travellers who want the flexibility to choose their own adventures with maximum control over their budgets.

In 2008, Tucan Travel took the independent brand back under its wing as a travel style. It now offers a broad range of itineraries across South America and East Southern Africa.

    Independent Travel

Travel to adventurous destinations has increased in popularity in every market. Tucan Travel recognises that group travel may not be everyones choice and we are continuously researching and expanding travellers options for Independent travel. Travellers may choose day trips, hotel and/or transport combinations, locally guided excursions or choose to link modules together to create their own personal holiday.

Singles, couples, families and private groups choose the flexibility of Independent Travel. Clients select hotel comfort rating, when and where they want to travel and for how long. Whether theyre looking for an excursion of one day or several weeks were sure with our Independent Travel packages we can cater for all needs.

    Expedition Cruising

There are parts of the world that can only be accessed by ship, such as the polar regions, and others that are best explored via rivers, like the Amazon rainforest. Places like Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands are absolutely teeming with wildlife, so an Expedition Cruise gives you the best chance to get closer to nature. Our cruises operate on smaller, purpose-built or specially adapted ships that offer high levels of service, excellent facilities and crucially, represent great value for money. Our Expedition Cruises focus on the adventure itself rather than just reaching a destination, so you really get the most out of every minute of your holiday.

Expedition Cruises are perfect for adventure travellers who are looking for a way to experience remote areas of the world in comfort and style. If youre interested in walking across diverse and fascinating landscapes, snorkelling and swimming activities, lectures by knowledgeable naturalist guides and meeting local people, Expedition Cruises are for you.

    Europe By Train

By far the most popular way to experience continental Europe is by train. Countries like France and Germany have some of the most advanced and well maintained trains in the industry. It goes without saying that rail travel is fast but with newer high-speed trains travelling at up to 186mph (300km/h) you will be able to reach your destination in a fraction of the time it takes by road.

Each country however has its own set of rail providers, for example in France the rail network is largely dominated by the SNCF network and the high-speed TGV trains. Trying to plan an itinerary which spans several countries by rail with traditional point to point tickets is an expensive minefield. In fact you will find it difficult to even book tickets outside of some countries such as Sweden.

The good news however is that several companies offer rail pass schemes that are honoured on many different rail networks throughout Europe. While the options may seem bewildering at first our comprehensive low-down aims to give you all the info you need to buy the right pass for your holiday.

    Rail Passes

The standard model for most rail passes is to allow the holder to travel free on participating rail networks for the duration of the rail pass. However some rail networks only offer concessions to those holding a rail pass. You can always check exactly what rail companies you can use before you buy a rail pass. In addition many trains will require that you have a reservation. You will normally be able to reserve a seat on a train up to 10 minutes before you leave but you may want to reserve earlier on busy trains. For the most part you will not be charged for the reservation on presentation or your rail pass although again this varies.

    Eurail

The Eurailpass is the best known rail pass, it has been around for decades and covers most routes in 17 European countries and come valid for 15 days, 21 days, 1 month, 2 months or 3 months. A cheaper “Youthpass” provides second class travel for those under 26 for the same durations.

More recently Eurail has issued a flexi-pass, this kind of pass entitles the bearer to a certain number of days travelling non-consecutively during the period of validity. For example a flexi-pass is available allowing 10 days travelling within 2 months at a much lower price than a 2 month pass. This kind of pass is ideal if you want to spend a little time at each destination.

Additionally Eurail offer “saverpasses” for group or family travel which can save up to 15% on the individual ticket price.

    Inter-rail

Inter-rail is another company offering European rail passes valid throughout Europe. With 28 locations under its belt the Inter-Rail pass has a lot to recommend itself. Inter-rail’s pass works on a zone system. Europe is divided up into a number of zones with 2 or 3 countries in each zone. Passes are then charged based on the number of zones you are visiting and the period that the pass is valid for.

By far the best value for money is the 1 month “any number of zones” pass, if you are under 26 you can also get a substantial discount on this pass. However if you know you are concentrating your travel in a small area and one of the zones correspond to the countries you want to see then you may find one of the 1 or 2 zone passes a better deal.

    ScanRail

The ScanRail pass is a rail pass allowing free travel throughout Scandinavia. The entire national rail networks in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark are covered as well as a small selection of ferries and buses. High speed trains are not covered but many offer substantial discounts to holders of this pass.

This pass is available in two “flexi” versions offering either 5 days in 2 months or 10 days in two months and a 21 day consecutive pass. Discounts are offered to children, youths (under 26) and senior citizens.

This really is one of the cheapest ways to travel around Scandinavia, especially as some of the other pass schemes have poor coverage of Scandinavia.

    EuroDomino

EuroDomino passes provide between three to eight days travel within a 1 month period in a single European country. These passes are significantly cheaper than other European passes and are only available to residents of European countries. Pricing varies according to the country that the pass is issued for.

If you are going to restrict your travel to one country this is probably the most convenient and cheapest pass to book with the possible exception of national passes available locally in the destination country. With many countries refusing to accept payments from outside their borders this makes the EuroDomino a much safer choice for most people.

These passes also have the benefit of having second class version available for those over 26 years of age, which can bring down your travel expenditure significantly. Although this does come with the sacrifice of some comfort.

    Rail/Drive passes

Some routes, most notably the channel tunnel offer a rail and drive pass. These come in two flavours, either trains that can carry your car such as the Eurostar or rail passes which offer a number of “car days” in between train days in which you will have access to a hire car. Eurail offers “bonuses” which are effectively 50-100% reductions on car hire with some of their passes.

These tickets are useful for exploring harder to reach and rural sites although you will need a full driving licence and may need an international driving permit.

    Point-to-point tickets

If you are concentrating most of your travel around a few location then buying individual tickets is the best way to go. For backpacking though the rail passes above probably represent the best value for money and offer the most flexibility.

    Traveling by Train in Europe

Traveling by train in Europe is efficient and cost-effective.

It was small, fitting neatly into the palm of my hand, but it held great promise. This simple slip of paper, my Eurail youth pass, allowed me to hop on any train in Europe. It was like winning the lottery or landing the golden ticket.

Back then, I was an exchange student studying in Austria, so I was close to the action. Eurail in hand, I would pull out my map of Europe, which started off crisp and new but soon grew tattered with use, and plan my adventures.

Should I meet friends in Spain? Travel with my roommate to Budapest? Or should we try to reach the Arctic Circle in Norway? It didn’t matter that I had to sleep in youth hostels or on overnight trains. I was exploring Europe!

Many years have passed since the train trips I took at age 20, but I’m still in love with train travel in Europe.

For me, one of the biggest benefits about vacationing in Europe is that it’s easy to visit several countries in one trip. Unlike travel in the United State or Australia, where traveling between states can take days, you can travel just a few hours or less and be in a completely different culture.

This makes traveling in Europe much simpler. I’ve rented cars in Europe, and that’s a great way to explore rural areas like Tuscany. But then it comes to driving in large cities and populated areas, driving can be stressful, and it can be difficult to find your way around.

By contrast, the train system is well-organized and takes much of the guess-work out of travel. That s why, once again, I chose to travel by train on a recent trip to Europe.

Our plan was to start off in Paris, and then travel around Switzerland. After a few tricky spots manuvouring our luggage through the Paris subway system, we took off from Paris.

It took less than six hours and just one connection to make it to the small town of Montreux, Switzerland on Lake Geneva. Going to the airport would have been more expensive and taken more time, considering all the hassles of checking in and going through security.

We chose to purchase a Swiss Pass for our rail travel.

From there, we chose to buy a five-day Swiss Pass, which provided unlimited access on trains, buses, and boats over the course of eight days.

The Swiss take train travel to new heights. Their organized, efficient and punctual train system means that you can make each connection as planned. If the schedule says the train will leave at 15:39, you can be guaranteed that it will.

From Montreux, we took the train to the cheese-making village of Gruyeres (yes, of the famous cheese). That entailed a breath-taking train trip through the Alps, a short connection in the village of Montbovon, and then we were there.

Getting from the even tinier Swiss village of Charmey, Switzerland to Zurich required a bit more adventure. First, we took a regional bus to Bulle, caught a train to Romont, and then connected one more time in Bern to reach Zurich.

Each connection was perfectly spelled out on the Rail Europe travel planning website, and went smoothly. The entire trip, including all the connections, only took 2.44 hours.

Train travel varies by country, of course, but in general, it’s safe and efficient. You still need to take the usual precautions, though. I learned this when my purse stolen once while sleeping on a train in France. Fortunately, police can be found at most stations if you need assistance.

Not long ago, my daughter told me about her upcoming summer plans – a month-long trip around Europe.

Like any parent, I worry. My daughter would be traveling overseas, far away from me. But what could I say? I remembered a girl who once did that same thing at the same age.

“Let me tell you about the Eurail Pass,” I told her, and then we pulled out a crisp new map of Europe.

Travel Cheap by Train – Amtrak – s Rail Pass #imaginative

    #cheap rail travel
    #

Travel Cheap by Rail Amtrak s Rail Pass

California Zephyr pulling into the station at Granby Colorado

Amtrak has a U.S. Rail pass for as little as $439.  That will get an adult 8 segments (stops) in 15 days.  It s an affordable way to see the country with enjoy riding a train as part of the travel experience.  My husband and I traveled from Baltimore to Truckee, CA using this U.S. Rail Pass. It was easy, inexpensive and much less stressful than driving or flying.  Our eight segments were Baltimore Washington, Chicago (the Amtrak hub), Granby CO, Grand Junction CO, Truckee CA, Chicago, Washington DC, Baltimore.  We did it in under two weeks and spent nine nights in three fantastic western towns.

Coach on Amtrak is Way Better than an Airplane or Bus

The rail pass gets you a coach seat.  On one of the sightseeing trains, a coach seat has electrical outlets, private reading lights, drop-down trays, and chair that reclines like a Lazy-Boy recliner rather than just a mere tip backward like a bus or train.  If you can sleep in a Lazy-Boy, you can sleep on a train.  Your bags are only a short walk away, and there s no drama with security.  You just get up, walk downstairs, find your bag and get what you need.  Also, you can bring a ginormous bag and not worry about the airlines fining you for oversize luggage.  The bathroom and your luggage are in your railroad car.

We didn t stay in our coach seats except for when we wanted to nap, sleep or read.  On these cross-country trains there s a big sightseeing car next to the dining car.  It s wall-to-wall windows with swivel chairs and booth-type diner seating.  It s very comfortable and allows you to see on both sides of the car.  It s a great place to meet new people.

Sight Seeing Car on Amtrak s California Zephyr

What are Segments How to Craft Your Rail Trip

The cheapest adult rail pass is $439 and allows up to 8 segments to be taken in 15 days.  A segment is a stop, and reservations must be made for each stop because the trains don t stop at stations when there s nobody set to be dropped off or picked up.  I went to Amtrak website and viewed the online train routes and schedules to chose our segments.  All trains meet in Chicago, so we headed there to pick up the California Zephyr.  Then I chose Granby Colorado as our first stop on the Zephyr because it was the stop closest to Rocky Mountain National Park.  The next segment I chose was Grand Junction, Colorado because we wanted to see the Colorado National Monument and tour Colorado s wine country.  Our final stop was Truckee, California because we wanted to see the Sierra Nevadas, Donner Lake, Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River.    We stayed three nights in each place.  Count in the total of four days to travel and we came in just under our fifteen day allotment.

Understand that once you purchase the rail pass, you must reserve the segments with an Amtrak agent.  This can be done by phone.  DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS ONLINE.  The online system doesn t play well with Amtrak.  I first did mine online and it was a fiasco.  The process went perfectly when I called the reservations line and made the reservations.

    Eating on the Train

Lots of people bring their own food and eat at their seats, and there s a snack bar for drinks and vending machine style snacks.  But the dining car, while pricey ($20 per person w/ tip for dinners) is a worthwhile experience at least a few times on the trip.  The food we had was good and we were seated with other couples.  We met so many interesting people.

Here s the menu for the California Zephyr the train that goes from Chicago to San Francisco and known as the most scenic rail ride in the North America.

    Rail Passes Can Be Upgraded

Truth be told I hate sleeping in a recliner.  So I inquired about upgrading to a sleeper (roomette) once we were on board.  We were able to get a sleeper for $210 for the one night from Chicago to Granby.  The roomette is only as big as two rail seats facing each other with one foot of space between the door and the seat.  Both seats fold down to become a bed, a top bunk folds down for a second bed and curtains are drawn for privacy.  The price of the roomette also includes your meals, a porter (who will bring you your meals if you d rather skip the dining car), coffee, newspaper, bottled water and access to the shower.

Prices for sleeping accommodations on a train are sold similarly to the way airlines sell tickets.  Book far in advance and you re likely to get the best deal.  Book 3 days before departure and you ll pay the highest price.  But, book while you re on board and you may get a great deal because the rooms are empty.  That s what happened for us.  So if you re willing to take a chance and NOT get a good deal, ask for the upgrade once you re on board.

It s perfectly marvelous sleeping on a train.  Even the top bunk (which I swear is the size of a wide ironing board) is a comfortable experience.

The Wise Men Ruby Canyon in Colorado as seen from the California Zephyr

    Why Take the Train?

Take the train for the added travel experience.  There s almost nothing good about flying these days except speed.  Car travel can be exhausting, stressful and expensive.  And traveling long distances in the US by car often puts the driver on Interstate Highways and Turnpikes where the majority of scenery is comprised of concrete, asphalt and steel highway signs.

But trains snake through the American landscape, sometimes going places where there are no roads.  On the route from Denver to Truckee there are parts of the mountains and desserts that almost no one sees unless they re traveling by train or paddling down the Colorado River.  A train ride is relaxing.  It s a mode of transportation that becomes part of the travel experience instead of penance leading up to the travel experience.

Two Things I Wish I d Known Before I Booked My First Rail Trip

    RESERVE A CAR

We reserved a car in Granby because we knew we wanted to drive through Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding areas.  But we didn t rent a car in Grand Junction and Truckee because we were staying right in town and figured we d spend lots of time in the town and use the public transportation system.  This was dumb.  Renting a car for a few days is cheap, especially considering the flexibility it gives you.  Car rental companies will often meet you at the station with your rental car even in very small towns.  Having the car hired and the hotel booked in advance makes a perfectly smooth transition.

GO WITH PERSON TO PERSON COMMUNICATION AT AMTRAK

My husband and I loved our rail vacation and hope to ride the Adirondack, Coastal Starlight and the Sunset Limited in the near future.

Transportation: Travel Europe by train, bus, car, plane, etc. #best #prices

    #travel europe by train
    #

Traveling with a Eurail train pass is the easiest, fastest, and most convenient way to explore continental Europe. The pages below provide information and price comparisons of the many forms of transportation available in Europe. Try using Pass Finder to figure which rail pass is the best value for your itinerary.

Where to purchase (find your country below)?

You must purchase your Eurail pass before you arrive in Europe. You can purchase Eurostar tickets and point-to-point tickets in advance or while Europe.

Argentina | Australia | Brazil | Canada | China | Hong Kong (English) Hong Kong (Chinese) | India | Israel

Japan | Korea | Middle East/GCC | New Zealand | Singapore (English) | Singapore (Chinese) | South Africa

Thailand | United States of America | Rest of the World (English) | Rest of the World (Spanish)

Information to help you get started

For many people the only way to travel in Europe is by train. Eurail and/or Inter-Rail passes provide fast and efficient for those wanting to travel Europe by train.

    • Eurail passes are available to anyone who is not a citizen of Europe.

  • Britrail passes are available to anyone who is not a citizen of the UK.
  • Inter-Rail passes are only available to citizens of Europe or for people who can prove they have been residents of a European country for more than six months.
  • EuroStar train service offers high speed trains between London Paris and Brussels Paris. Anyone may purchase tickets, but Eurail pass holders are eligible for a discounted ticket.
  • If you are traveling in a small group (3-6 people) you might find it cheapest to rent or lease a car for the duration of stay in Europe. When computing the price remember to factor in buying gas, road tolls, and any other applicable charges.

Several different companies offer flexible bus passes that go to many of the most popular travel destinations in Europe. Bus passes are sometimes, but not always, cheaper than train passes. They are an especially good deal for those traveling in Europe for more than two months, because most rail passes are only valid for up to two months from first day of use (depending on the pass you purchase).

Yet another travel option is backpacking bus tours. I went on two of these week long tours as supplements to my independent train travel. They are fun way to travel (especially when traveling solo) and a great way for a traveler to see certain parts of Europe in depth.

What I used during my three month trip

Depending on the length of your stay, combining rail and bus passes can save you money and offer you greater flexibility. During my three months of travel I: used a Britrail Flexipass, went on a MacBackpackers tour, took a National Express bus to/from Ireland, went on a Tir Na NOg tour, took a Eurolines bus from London to Paris, used a 10 days in two month Eurail Flexi-Pass, and took the Eurostar from Brussels to London.

    #

The Aloha 32 is a quality, Canadian-built, sloop-rigged, coastal cruiser designed by Mark
Ellis (similar to his Niagara 35 design). She is an ideal bay and cruising boat for two,
although she can sleep up to five. She accelerates quickly in a breeze and handles like a
dream. A reliable 21 hp Westerbeke diesel. Fin keel and spade rudder she can be turned within her own length in tight marinas.

Starting forward is the workshop/sail locker and chain locker with a large 24 x 24 hatch for great ventilation and to conveniently egress. Port and Starboard hanging lockers. Main saloon for entertaining with port and starboard seating and a centerline drop leaf table. Good storage all around and port side seat pulls out to increase bunk size. There is a large over head hatch for ventilation and 6 total opening ports with bug screens. Moving aft, the large head is on starboard with overhead hatch. A designated pump for shower bypassing bilge. On port is a spacious galley for preparing sunset dinners. A deep SS sink and salt water pump to conserve fresh water for washing dishes. A 2 burner propane stove/oven. The icebox is large with a top sliding shelf and is well insulated. Very good counter space and good storage for long distance sailing. Next aft to port is a single pilot berth with battery bank below, plus storage. On starboard is a comfortable double berth, long enough to accommodate 64 passengers. The engine compartment is centered below the cockpit. The Aloha has standing headroom of 64.

Enigma has been lovingly maintained by her current owners. Her mast comes down yearly so all standing rigging is inspected annually. She had a complete bottom job in 2013 with new barrier coats and top coats. (no blisters) She is covered with custom frame work and tarps to protect her from the harsh New England Winters. Her top and sides are cleaned and polished with 2 coats of wax each Spring. Her bright work is in excellent condition. The current owners have enjoyed sailing her all around Long Island Sound, and the Islands.

How to see Italy by train

In a new book, Tim Parks says that to get under the skin of Italy, you must board a train. Whether an ultra fast service to Rome or a time-warp dawdler to Milan, all national life is there.

    8:00AM BST 23 Jun 2013

    Comments

Here are a few complications that may occur if you take the 18.36 Regionale Veloce on a Sunday evening from Verona (Porta Vescovo) to Milan (Centrale). Your underlying problem is that this is a small station where the fast through trains from Venice to Milan don t stop.

You could get a local to Verona Porta Nuova, the main station on the other side of town and then a fast Frecciabianca; but if some delay hardly unusual prevents you from making your connection, you ll be left holding a ticket that is valid only for that one reserved-seats-only train. Not good.

Or you could go to Verona and wait for another regionale. However, the westbound Milan departures seem timed to depart just seconds before your train arrives from the east. You ll be caught waiting nearly an hour.

Given this situation, you feel rather grateful that there are still four slower trains a day from Venice right through to Milan, stopping in Verona Porta Vescovo. Regionale Veloce, means fast regional, but is actually a slow train. Let s say, the faster of the slower trains. On which you can t reserve a seat even if you want to.

It costs 11.55 (£10) to go 150km in just under two hours. A giveaway by British standards. The Italians still have the concept of social pricing, even if their rail system is monstrously in debt. The Frecciabianca costs 23 (£19.50). This could be why the regionale, when it arrives, is so grotesquely packed.

    Elderly Couple Assaulted by Burglars

SRIKAKULAM:  The police arrested a six member gang Thursday, for attempting to burgle a house by threatening the occupants, an elderly couple, with a pistol in the town on November 14. The police recovered the country made pistol from the gang. The arrested persons have been identified as M Mohan Rao, J Ravi Kumar, M Gurunatha Rao, P Ramesh, M Ramayya and B Dhanunjaya Rao.

Revealing the arrests of the accused, Srikakulam deputy superintendent of police K Bhargava Naidu said that the accused broke into the house of retired employee V Chandrabushan Raju at Sayabula Thota area in the town on November 14 and tried to loot valuables after threatening them with the pistol.

Their attempt proved futile as neighbours rushed to the house after Raju shouted for help. However, the gang severely beat the elderly couple before fleeing from the house. During investigation, police came to know that Raju’s son died a few years ago and his daughter-in-law, Santhi, has been staying with her parents after the death of her husband.

However, Santhi’s brother B Dhanunjaya Rao decided to loot Raju’s house. To attempt the offence, he hired some criminals and gained entry into Raju’s house.

However, after the police took them into custody, one of the accused, Ramayya, jumped from the police jeep in a bid to escape and was severely injured. He was admitted to a hospital, the DSP said.

It’s more than a job; it’s serving God.

We’d be delighted to have you as one of our many satisfied missionary customers. Please give us a chance to earn your business by requesting a free airfare quote .

    Missionary Customer Testimonials

Here’s a short sampling of letters that missionaries sent to us voluntarily. We have never solicited testimonials.

    Dear Marvin,

I wanted to write and thank you for the wonderful service that I consistently receive from Golden Rule Travel. It is a genuine pleasure to do business with a group of people who so obviously understand what customer service is all about. Through my work, I meet many, many people who travel all over the world. Frequently, when the conversation turns to travel, I am the only one who does not hesitate to make a recommendation of the travel agency they have dealt with.

I have made international travel arrangements on several occasions with Myron Miller of your Kansas office, and he has been unfailingly helpful and pleasant to deal with. In fact, everyone I have spoken with at Golden Rule Travel has been friendly and cooperative.

I appreciate the time and effort it requires to build an organization of such high quality. Thank you for your commitment to such a high standard of service. It is both a pleasure and a comfort to do business with a service company that takes service seriously. May you be blessed in all that you do.

    Warm regards,

    [signature]

    [name of mission director withheld]

    Director

I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the invaluable help given to us by Myron Miller in the Kansas office with our recent flights to India. Myron went above and beyond the call of duty in our initial efforts to make arrangements for our airfare, was extremely patient when we couldn’t make our mind up, was enormously congenial when we changed a name at the last minute, and was a life saver when we called him from India the day before we were scheduled to leave and asked him to make a tickets change for us, allowing us to depart two days later than we had originally intended.

I have never known a travel agent to help so much and to do it all very amiably! We will, of course, use Golden Rule Travel in our future missions trips.

    Sincerely,

    [signature]

    Pastor [name withheld]

    Dear Linda Rose,

Thank you, once again, for working on our behalf. We really appreciate your hard work. I’m sure we’ll be in touch in the future.

By the way, if you would like, send me some of your business cards and we’ll give them out to potential customers. We are in contact with many missionaries!

God bless you for your ministry to us!

    For the King,

    [missionary couple from Honduras]

Following is an excerpt that appeared in EMQonline, which is called the “Professional journal for the worldwide mission community” and is printed by the Billy Graham Center:

Once a missionary knows where he or she is going, the question of travel becomes an immediate preoccupation. Airline tickets to foreign countries can cost thousands of dollars and possibly exceed the budget of a church-supported missionary.

    [. ]

Golden Rule Travel offers special rates for missionaries, focusing on creative ways of getting you the lowest prices, including using coupons and routing through alternative airports.

Now that you’ve heard what people are saying about us, please give us a chance to earn your business and let us give you a free airfare quote !

Europe on a Roll or a Slow Stroll

Don t Let Limited Mobility Keep You From the Old World s Greatest Cities

    by Rick Steves

If you re a wheelchair user or slow walker, Europe s cobblestoned charms may seem as unreachable as a rainbow s end. But in recent years Europe has been making impressive strides toward opening its doors to everybody, including travelers with limited mobility. Its biggest cities offer the most accessible sightseeing opportunities for your time and money. In London, taxis will whisk you between more wheelchair-ready sights than you ve got time to see. Just a few hours away by train, Paris and Amsterdam are doing their best to catch up to London. Plan ahead and take advantage of the growing number of resources available. If you re traveling with an older person who could benefit from using a wheelchair in museums, call or email the museum (many have websites) to see if they loan out wheelchairs.

I know you re thinking. what do I know about disabilities? I do know about Europe and how to do research. My co-author, Dr. Ken Plattner, and I teamed up to write Easy Access Europe, a guidebook for people with limited mobility (now in its second edition).

    London

London, easily the best destination for any first-time visitor to Europe, is the enjoyable epicenter of all things British. With recent improvements and a barrier-free mentality, London is one of Europe s most accessible cities. A staggering 20 million people visit London every year, and many have disabilities.

You ll find that many of London s venues such as theaters welcome people who use wheelchairs. You can roll along on the city s walking tours to learn about anything from Jack the Ripper to the Beatles. The city s taxis are convenient, inexpensive, and fully accessible. London has recently made its bus system accessible and is improving the Tube stations as well. The city s airports are accessible from customs to baggage claim to queuing for a taxi.

Most of London s big sights make it easy for wheelchair users to visit. You can get a feel for life during the Blitz in the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum. Get thee to a play at Shakespeare s Globe, or channel Mary Poppins at St. Paul s Cathedral. You can check out the Crown Jewels the king s bling on display at the Tower of London, and take a spin on the 450-foot-high London Eye Ferris Wheel (where from the top, Big Ben looks little). A few of London s top sights, such as Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, aren t fully accessible but can work for wheelchair users with a companion.

    Paris

The City of Light has been a beacon of culture for centuries. As a world capital of art, fashion, food, literature, and ideas, it stands as a symbol of all the fine things that human civilization can offer. Paris is more challenging than London for people with disabilities. But if you can make a little extra effort and have a healthy sense of humor, you ll find plenty in Paris to savor.

Taxis charge reasonable rates and are the best way to get around, because the Metro with its many stairs and escalators is difficult for wheelchair users. Most cabbies are happy to assist; once you re inside the taxi, the driver will fold up your chair and place it in the trunk.

Many of Paris top sights are fully accessible. Wheelchair users can visit Mona and Venus at the Louvre, be impressed by the Orsay Museum s Impressionists, zip up the Eiffel Tower (to the second level), and sing Louis, Louis at the Palace of Versailles. Other notable sights will work for wheelchair users who have some assistance, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral s echoey, incense-filled interior (though only hunchbacks can climb its tower).

    Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of good living, cozy caf s, great art, stately history, and a spirit of live-and-let-live. You can roll or stroll through any neighborhood and see a lively culture thrive amid 17th-century buildings, all of it reflected in quiet canals.

For travelers with limited mobility Amsterdam is both challenging and rewarding. While locals have a friendly attitude toward people with disabilities, they also have great respect for the historical nature of their beautiful (and largely non-accessible) canal-side buildings. The city has strict rules about making adaptations to monumental structures useful for historical preservation, not so helpful for accessibility. The good news is that attitudes regarding accessibility are slowly improving.

The streets and sidewalks of Amsterdam have a certain freedom of movement: thousands of bikes mingling and merging with cars and pedestrians. Wheelchair users here are smart to adapt to the chaos maneuvering their way through the streets, across trolley tracks, along the pink bike-only paths, and on the sidewalks. Stay alert and keep a steady line as you make your way through this bustling city.

At any Amsterdam tourist information office ask for the extremely helpful Amsterdam Accessibility Guide, which provides information about levels of accessibility at hotels, restaurants, and sights around the city. The steep stairs at the Anne Frank House mean that only the ground-floor museum is open to wheelchair users. Otherwise, however, you ll find that most of Amsterdam s best attractions are accessible, including the famous sunflowers at the Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt s Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum.

    Getting There

European countries, at various speeds, are doing what they can to make their cobbled streets and cities easier for everyone to visit. Still, it s smart to do some advance groundwork.

The U.S. Department of Transportation s New Horizons guide provides information for air travelers with disabilities, including navigating security, getting on and off aircraft, and handling seating assignments (available online at http://aircon sumer.ost.dot.gov/publications/horizons.htm).

Air carriers abroad have significantly different policies regarding people with disabilities than U.S. airlines. Fortunately, the European Commission recently drafted legislation that will go into effect in 2006 to force airlines to meet the needs of people with disabilities. It s worth looking into the differences between airlines you re considering. Some airlines may require a doctor s certificate for all independent air travel; others may require that you travel with a personal assistant. Contact the airlines directly for specifics.

Whenever possible, plan and book flights well in advance. Inform the airline of your disability and let them know if you ll be traveling with a companion and if you ll need special equipment on the plane with you. It can be helpful to work with an airline special-services representative who can assist with facilitating arrangements.

If you d rather not go it alone, you ll find a selection of groups that run tours to Europe for the mobility impaired, including Accessible Journeys (wheelchair trips to Britain, France, and Holland, www.disabilitytravel.com ), Flying Wheels Travel (escorted tours to Great Britain and France, www.flyingwheelstravel.com ), and Nautilus Tours and Cruises (tours to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, www.nautilustours.com ).

    On the Road

A growing number of hotels have elevators and rooms with accessible bathrooms.

The Sweden-based Independent Living Institute s Accessible Vacation Home Exchange Web site can put you in touch with disabled Europeans looking to swap homes or help you find an assistant overseas (www.independentliving.org ).

You ll find even more resources through organizations such as Mobility International USA (MIUSA), which encourages international exchange (www.miusa.org ), and the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE), which provides information about work, study, volunteer, and research opportunities abroad for people with disabilities (www.miusa.org ). Access-Able Travel Source s site (www.access-able.com ) includes access information and resources, and offers a free email newsletter. The Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality (SATH), an educational nonprofit group, publishes a travel magazine and offers advice (www.sath.org ).

Other sites to check out include Emerging Horizons (www.emerginghorizons.com ), Gimp on the Go (www.gimponthego.com ), and Disabled Peoples International (www.dpi.org ). Access Abroad is a good resource for students with disabilities planning to study abroad. AARP s website features articles written for seniors and slow walkers (www.aarp.org/destinations ).

I m inspired by the fact that wherever I go in Europe I see locals who have disabilities. On the streets, in the museums, in the restaurants, and on the trains, you ll see people using wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and canes. If they can live rich and full lives in Europe, then you can certainly have an enjoyable and worthwhile vacation there. The Old World is becoming newly accessible for you.

Rick Steves is the author of over 50 books on European travel, including Europe Through the Back Door. available at bookstores or at www.ricksteves.com.

    All-inclusive Costa Rica Options

Resorts in Costa Rica with all inclusive service options allow guests to worry less about a daily schedule and focus on having a relaxing and fun getaway. Many families prefer these types of hotels, as their kids cannot easily wander off or get into trouble, allowing parents to relax and enjoy their holiday. Facilities tend to be secure with plenty of on-site activities and services to keep the entire clan entertained.  Couples like these hotels, as they can be extremely relaxing and worry-free .to the point of encouraging no-guilt laziness , thanks to a carefree and pleasure-filled environment.

    Location, location, location

One of the biggest advantages of Costa Rican resort properties is their prime location.  The larger all inclusive hotels enjoy some of the finest beachfront locations in the country. Smaller hotels can rarely afford the maintenance required at such grandiose facilities nearby the corrosive, salty air.  As a result, many spectacular beachfront locations in the country are occupied by these larger hotels.

Not all resorts are the same

And that particularly true in regard to their ambiance and the clientele they attract. In addition, the food quality and the service levels vary greatly. Some of the all inclusive resorts in Costa Rica have a more laid-back and carefree vibe, while others emphasize white glove service and elegant facilities. Certain properties have complete, all-inclusive plans where rates include meals, snacks and alcoholic drinks.  Other properties offer meals-only or flexible meal plans.  At a few of these hotels, a meal plan is a necessity, as the properties are not nearby local towns.

Costa Rica Special: Meal-inclusive, boutique properties

Before you go about selecting hotels for your vacation, it is important that you understand the purpose of your trip and the type of experience you desire .  For example, the adults only hotel, Villa Buena Onda offers an incredible setting for romance and relaxation, but might be better avoided by a group of young singles. There are other properties whose mood changes dramatically depending on the season, as the type of traveler they attract varies during specific periods. This is where a local expert at our travel agency can guide you in the right direction.  In our experience, often a negative hotel review is the result of a client who stayed at a property that was not right for their needs.  Travel with us and we ll be sure you avoid that mistake!

Pros and Cons of All-inclusive Hotels in Costa Rica? Webinar

What is the best option for you? Our Costa Rica expert, Rodo Alvarez, invited one of our Travel Consultants, Theresa Parent to share her experiences of matching the travelers interested in coming to Costa Rica with the right destinations and hotels. Why Costa Rica all inclusive vacation packages are sometimes a great option, and sometimes you may want to look at other accommodation styles? Theresa talks about often overlooked details, that can have a big impact on your travel planning, take a look here .

    Sights Places

Famous for its relaxed atmosphere, the country never fails to deliver guests unique experiences and unexpected moments of discovery with every visit. Situated on the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage city shrouded in mist, mountains and jungle, and a center for Lao culture. The capital of Vientiane resembles a small town more than a capital city. Its position along the banks of the Mekong contributes to the leisurely ambiance, making it a pleasant town to explore by foot or bike.

From November to February the weather in Laos is cool and dry while March to June sees temperatures soaring in to the high 30s (Celsius). July to October tend to be rainy, washing out some roads thus making rural areas inaccessible. The Lao people are very sociable and if you happen to be in the country during one of their festivals, you are sure to get caught up in the lively atmosphere.

MONEY. Lao Kip; US Dollars and Thai Baht are widely accepted in the main cities. Moneychangers are found in the cities and an increasing number of ATMs are appearing, however they distribute Laos Kip and have a low limit. As of July 12. 1USD = 8000 Kip

VISAS. Foreign tourists are generally admitted into Laos for 30 days with a visa on arrival (obtained at most border check points) or for 30 days with a visa issued at a Laotian embassy. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.

ELECTRICITY. Lao uses 220V. Power outlets usually feature two prong round or flat sockets however, there is no standard. It is recommended to bring a universal plug adaptor.

    DIALING CODE. +856

    TIME ZONE. GMT/UTC +7

GETTING THERE AWAY. The two main international airports are in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The smaller Pakse Airport in the south serves the international flight to/and Siem Reap, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh city. There are no direct flights from Europe or very few from other countries to Laos. The most frequent connections are from Bangkok (Thailand).

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS. Laos main holidays are based around the Buddhist calendar and will cause little disruption to travel plans. Other festivals such as Lao New Year (April) and Boat Racing (August in Luang Prabang; October in Vientiane) may see some restaurants and businesses close, but are colorful times to visitand experience Lao culture.

LANGUAGE The national language is Lao, which is closely related to Thai and is spoken in many different dialects. Lao,like Thai, is a tonal language. French is still spoken by many educated members of the older generation but Thai and English are popular with younger people.

Things to do in Miami, FL: Florida City Guide by 10Best

Free Fun Is Totally Possible at These 10 Best Miami Spots

    More About Miami

Sultry, seductive Miami, Florida entertains many identities: snowbird refuge, retiree haven, celebrity playground, immigrant stop-off and tourist mecca. All undeniably accurate, they’re telling descriptors of everything this dazzling city embraces. They’re also indicative of the melting-pot culture that has come to define South Florida, an area originally dismissed by developers. The region later found purpose as a resort destination and as farm land for Florida’s first settlers (or “Crackers”). These initial roles ultimately led to today’s Miami, a capital of travel, commerce and self-assertive flamboyance.

But what else could you ask of a sub-tropical wonderland washed by brilliant light and kissed by enveloping seas? As recently as the early 20th century, America’s Riviera was largely a backwater. Its potential was finally brought to fruition by the arrival of the railroad, promise of a year-round growing season, and the emerging leisure class’s disposable income for vacationing in Miami. These days, easy access is a given, and agriculture flourishes. However, the city’s natural beauty and world-class Miami travel destinations most strongly render it a fashionable escape for fun and freedom.

The primary locus for such hip activity is Miami Beach and, more specifically, South Beach (affectionately deemed SoBe). Artistic, self-aware and boasting some of Miami’s best vacation spots and hottest beaches, it’s an enclave that maintains its vibrancy no matter the moment, illuminated alternately by sunlight and neon. Here, Art Deco Miami landmarks tie past and present together with pastel sleekness while impossibly beautiful people lounge during the day and party late into the night.

Still, Miami vacation spots and travel destinations are not all this area has to offer. Miami transcends the promoted glitz it’s gained from association with movies, TV shows and magazine spreads. It encompasses Coconut Grove’s residential beauty and superb shopping (CocoWalk and the Streets of Mayfair attract folks by droves) and Coral Gables’ winding streets, Mediterranean architecture and refined lifestyle. It even reaches out to the quiet, suburban domesticity of South Dade with its malls, parks and wildlife attractions.

Miami travel guides note that it also shines as a beacon of accessible liberty for immigrants from throughout the Caribbean and South and Central America. Escaping poverty and lack of opportunity, they come with a dearth of material goods but an inextinguishable hope and an abiding heritage that manifests itself in food, music and community richness.

Food and music, in fact, showcase Miami’s zest for all things sensual. Cool jazz, spirited salsa rhythms, and a cuisine that unites fresh seafood, tropical fruits and tongue-tingling flavors provide evidence of a people and a city mesmerized by and dedicated to the spices of life. Experience its many incarnations in the most sizzling Miami neighborhoods: Little Havana, SoBe or the Design District. Each one boasts top-notch clubs and superlative restaurants, energized by a style-conscious clientele, so you will never run out of things to do in Miami.

Such range and so much possibility for both spirit and appetite ultimately impart to Miami a semblance of meaning that it neither needs nor demands. The city’s allure remains independent of attempts to quantify it, and regardless of the effort, satisfaction comes with just experiencing it. After all, when sympathetic climate and abundant care give rise to a strong, vivid hybrid, it’s not the parentage that draws attention but simply the beauty of the flower.
