My Best Airfare Deal for the Year

November 29, 2015 by Canadian Kilometers Leave A Comment

Generally, you don t have mileage running deals anymore, especially with less than 100% redeemable mile earnings, revenue based earning, and higher fares.

However, I booked the best airfare deal of the year just a month ago, when British Airways had an incredible fare sale on flights to Europe . Flights to London were advertised at $2015, but the actual price was even lower, at around $1800. However, as the day progressed, people discovered that it was working for continental Europe, allowing you to save on APD, which was roughly $220. The base fare was $476.

$1500 Fare

However, what was even more amazing was that you could stack another discount on these fares. As an AARP member you can take $400 off on a business class fare . applicable to all J-class fare buckets. This let you lower the base fare to $76, with an all-in price of $1035. At that price, it already is a incredible deal for transatlantic business class fares, given that surcharges and taxes when flying British Airways on an award ticket is $800-900 in business class.

The final kicker when booking the fare, however, was that you could stack another promotion on it, which was using Avios to decrease the price of the ticket. Normally, this was only supposed to be used for fares to/from London and on British Airways metal only, but it was working on this fare.

With 30,000 Avios, you could take off $764. This meant you got a redemption value of 2.5 cents on your Avios. You can get these Avios when signing up for the American Express Gold Card or Business Gold Rewards Card. offering 25,000 and 40,000 points in signup bonuses, respectively.

Another $764 discount for 30,000 Avios

This resulted in my fare being only $301, and 30,000 Avios! In ticketing I managed to get the return on American s new 767 with staggered business class seats, and put in an open jaw between Madrid and Barcelona.

Ticket Issued

This is relevant because it meant that you couldn t apply a systemwide upgrade on the fare (although irrelevant in this case), and it wouldn t be applicable for a promotion on tickets which had to be issued and operated by American.

The Actual Trip

The first half of the trip went well. A friend decided to join me on this trip, and we flew Los Angeles London Madrid together. Club World was mediocre, although the A380 was nice.

British Airways Club World

I would rank the seat itself as pretty much below any flat-bed business class product, while service and soft product were average. For $150 though, it was perfectly reasonable. Our flight landed delayed into London, meaning we had an agent greet us at the gate and sprint through Terminal 5 from concourse C to A by foot in 25 minutes. having to clear European transfer security as well.

For those of you who ve transited through London, you ll know how delightfully fun that is.

Luckily, we made the flight, and all was well.

On the return, things got a bit crazy. At the gate area, the boarding agents announced that our flight had been cancelled. This was actually the first time this year a flight had been cancelled on me, so it was totally surreal watching the surprise and shock from all the passengers in the gate area as everyone heard the announcement.

Since everyone had already cleared Schengen exit immigration, we had to go back through immigration, which was severely understaffed. I had my exit stamp crossed off.

Exit Stamp

The line for rebooking was around 20 deep at this time at ticketing in the departure concourse, so I was doing what I always recommend when IRROPS occurs.

Look at availability online (or ask friends to help you), and call the elite/rebooking line via Skype.

I was on hold with AA while waiting in line, and managed to get rebooked even though American hadn t cancelled the flight officially in their system (it ended up actually leaving 3 hours and 40 minutes late, strangely enough).

My routing back to LA ended up being Barcelona London Heathrow New York JFK Los Angeles. The best part about this was that it was issued back on American (001) ticket stock, and in a flexible fare class (J/D).

As luck had it, I had to make another 35 minute connection in Heathrow, although I did make my flights and actually ended up landing an hour early in LAX compared to my original itinerary (although my long layover in New York got scrapped).

Earning the Miles

This trip was a miles bonanza, given that I was AA elite at the time, I earned 100% bonus miles, as well as 25% class of service bonus on British Airways, and 50% on American. This meant:

  • 12,870 Base Redeemable Miles
  • 17,749 Elite and Class of Service Bonus Miles

However, this also stacked with two additional promotions. The first was the Trans-Atlantic Bonus, giving a bonus of 25,000 miles for each round-trip in business class across the Atlantic.

TATL Bonus

  • 25,000 TATL Promo Miles

Finally, I also got to earn miles from American s Bonus Miles promotion for flights marketed and issued on American ticket stock. The IRROPS was especially helpful here, as my return thus become eligible for this promotion.

I earned 12,000 miles each on the LHR-JFK and JFK-LAX legs, and 1,000 miles for the MAD-LHR leg.

This meant I earned a total of 80,619 redeemable miles on this trip,  enough for a First Class one-way ticket to Asia. Even at a conservative valuation of 1.5 cents, that s $1200 in value back in miles. For $301, this was an incredible deal for a trip to Europe, even without the miles!

It is the sole prerogative of each country or region to determine who is allowed to enter. All countries or regions have special requirements for persons intending to reside for extended periods (usually more than 90 days) or who plan to work, study, or engage in non-tourist activities. To obtain information on specific entry requirements, contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) to be visited. Violations of entry and exit requirements may result in serious penalties.

The following information on entry and exit requirements has been obtained from the Mexican authorities. However, these requirements are subject to change at any time. It is the traveller’s responsibility to check with the Embassy of the United Mexican States or its consulates for up-to-date information.

Canadian citizens, including those with dual citizenship, are required to present a valid passport in order to enter and exit Mexico. Canadians without a valid passport will be refused entry and returned to Canada.

Canadians with a criminal record might be refused entry and returned to Canada on the next available flight. Canadians in this situation should contact the Embassy of Mexico in Ottawa prior to making travel arrangements.

Permanent residents and landed immigrants of Canada should check for specific entry requirements with Mexico’s immigration authorities (Instituto Nacional de Migración, or INAMI).

Persons seeking to enter Mexico for purposes other than tourism are required to have a proper visa. Foreigners involved in unauthorized activities will be expelled. Special and diplomatic passport holders require a visa to visit Mexico. Consult the Embassy of Mexico in Canada or its consulates for more information.

Moving services Toronto, Etobicoke – GTA – rated #1 best movers

#

January 22, 2011 12:11 am

One of the most difficult challenges a widow or widower can face is deciding to move out of your longtime home and into a new living situation. Even if you embrace the move, it’s important to recognize that there is going to be emotion and nostalgia on the actual day.

With that in mind, you may want to consider whether you even want to be there on the day. Having a family member or caregiver present on your behalf provides support, comfort and ease with this transition. Whether present for the actual move, you should be involved in choosing which keepsakes stay and go. Planning is key, so start early with a simple colour-coded system (green dots for sold or give away, red for keeping [within the family or one’s new residence], and yellow for later consideration). This can help with the overwhelming stress of making all decisions at once, and may transform some of the experience into a positive, pleasant event. Gifting, donating, are good things to focus on as moving day approaches.

Picking a slow day to move could save hundreds of dollars, and be applied to your new home. Add too, it makes for a more relaxed environment in moving. Have the movers pack all the breakables, as these are covered by their insurance, and let family pack books and non breakable items.

Moving is a seasonal business, so take advantage of rates. If winter can be managed, you’ll save monies. If move in the summer, try and make your house closing on the15th of the month. Consider too the weekend: a less busy time for traffic and deadlines.
In your new home, unpacking (by family and caregivers) should take place as promptly as possible, easing the transition along.

Get at least three estimates for your move, and compare apples to apples, namely, the size of the truck, rates for packing and unpacking, cost for packing materials, additional services, insurance and payment terms. Lastly, consider personal referrals, the company’s reputation or BBB/BNI record.

SIX THINGS to consider when choosing S SONS MOVING for such a move:

  1. EXPERIENCE
Expert service in home, apartment, and condominium or senior’s relocation.
  2. RELIABILITY
Our ‘On time service’ standard has never missed or cancelled a job.
  3. PROFESSIONALISM
Friendly, helpful, uniformed professional staff from booking to completion. We
honour the terms of our contract.
  4. EFFICIENT, QUALITY SERVICE
Our business is built on satisfied repeat clients
and referrals. All furniture is properly protected, rubber runners used on floors,
    beds bagged, sofas plastic wrapped.
  5. EQUIPMENT
Our fully serviced vehicles are stocked with all the necessary equipment for a
    stress free move.
  6. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
We deliver on all promises and commitments with BBB Reliability and
    to BNI Member Standards.

Let S Sons Moving and Packing help in making this important transition and decision. We’ll take care of your move so you may take care of yourself.

Let us move you to your new place with a happy face!

Eco-minded, efficient and professional!

I want to relay how pleased we were with Stefan and his team. They also took the time to come to the house to assess our needs in order to provide an accurate quote. They also provide boxes and bins for a deposit which is refunded when returned. Everyone was highly professional as well as a pleasure to work with. They took care to protect and wrap things thoroughly. They were courteous, efficient and keen to problem solve when necessary. I would highly recommend their company without hesitation.

Term Life Insurance

You are on: Overview

Why choose term life insurance?

Term life insurance is simple to buy and easy to afford. This makes it the ideal way for young families to get the financial security they need.

Our plans provide protection for 10 to 40 year periods. If you die within the covered period (3). your beneficiaries receive the amount of the policy tax-free (4) and can use this money any way they want. For example, they can use it to:

  • Maintain their lifestyle and pay day-to-day expenses
  • Pay for your children’s education
  • Pay off loans and debts
  • Cover expenses like funeral costs

Select the term that’s right for you.

Term life insurance covers you for 10 to 40 year periods. Coverage automically renews annually after the initial Term until age 100 at which time coverage continues but premiums are no longer required.

You can also convert our term life insurance policies into permanent life insurance or universal life insurance until you are 71 years old without answering questions about your health or taking a medical exam (2) .

How much coverage do you need?

A general rule is 5-7 times your salary. So if your annual income is $40,000, you may want to purchase at least $200,000 in term life insurance.

  • All Perils protection combines both of the above coverages.

    4. ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS

My Best Airfare Deal for the Year – Canadian Kilometers #travel
