  • You want to cancel your trip because you don t feel safe at your destination. With the rise of global terrorism, there are a lot of places in the world that were fine to visit, but now they can give you pause.
  • Along these lines, Civil Unrest and War aren t covered. If these things are happening at your destination, you probably won t want to go on your trip, either.
  • You just don t feel right about leaving. Maybe you just have a feeling it s not a good time to go on your trip. Ever had that feeling and you were glad you listened to it? I have: I was very close to my Paternal Grandparents. On August 29, 1997 I had a strong feeling I should, without delay, visit my Grandma who lived 200 miles away. I left immediately and had the best visit I ever had with her! Exactly 2 weeks later she died in her sleep. And, I was privileged to give the eulogy at her funeral.
  • You change your mind and don t want to go on your trip
  • You get a new job and your boss won t let you have the time off
  • Your adult children are idiots and their melodramas might cause you to cancel your trip
  • Your child or grandchild s team which is normally in last place is now in the State Championship Finals
  • Your already approved vacation comes at a bad time and you know it would be better if you didn t take your trip
  • Even though you and your significant other are madly in love , you still want to have a way out (maybe that plants a seed of discord?). More on this below .

Here Are The Purchase Deadlines:

  • The CSA Freestyle Luxe deadline is no later than 24 hours after your initial trip payment
  • The Travel Guard Gold s Travel Guard Platinum s deadline is no later than 14 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The MH Ross Complete plan s deadline is no later than 15 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The Travel Insured Plus and plans deadlines are no later than 21 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The Travelex Max plan s deadline is no later than 30 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

All plans require:

  1. You insure 100% of your expected prepaid trip costs that would be non-refundable if you got hit by a cement truck on the day you were leaving for your trip and had to cancel at the last minute. Note this exception. The MH Ross Complete and TravelSafe Classic Plus plans allow you to insure the full prepaid cost of any specific travel arrangement without having to insure the full value of all your travel arrangements. For example, if you are flying to a cruise and you select Air / Cruise as your Type of Trip on the purchase application, you have to insure 100% of the cost of the airfare and the cruise to have CFAR coverage on the air and cruise. If you just insure the cruise, but not the full prepaid cost of the airfare you won t have CFAR on the air and cruise.;
  2. You also insure within 14 30 days (depending on the plan) of the payment for those arrangements including the cost of any subsequent arrangements (or any other subsequent arrangements not made through your travel agent) added to your Trip; and
  3. You are not disabled from travel at the time you pay your premium and
  4. You cancel your Trip more than two days (MH Ross, Travelex Max TravelSafe) or forty-eight hours (CSA, Travel Guard Travel Insured) prior to Your Scheduled Departure Date. Tip: 48 hours does not equal 2 calendar days. Click here to see why not .

Important: There will be no coverage available under the Optional Cancel For Any Reason Benefit, if purchased if you insure an amount less than your total prepaid trip costs that are subject to any scheduled penalty on your Departure Date.

This is handy to know: I use the term scheduled penalty below. A scheduled penalty is the total amount of money you d lose at the time you cancel your trip. Cruises Tours typically have a penalty schedule. And if you have a non-refundable airline ticket the entire cost will be the penalty because technically you can t get any of your money back if you cancel your trip.

Here s a big drawback (besides the price the fact you don t get a 100% refund) in the Cancel For Any Reason coverage:

A trip cancellation claim that is paid under the Cancel For Any Reason coverage means that any benefit you would get from cancelling your trip for a covered reason is lost. For example:

  • 2 people (significant others) are sharing a cabin on a cruise
  • Even though they are madly in love they still get Cancel For Any Reason coverage (maybe that plants a seed of discord?)
  • They have a falling out and one of them cancels their trip using their Cancel For Any Reason benefit
  • The other person does not receive the benefit (as in getting any money from the claim) of the additional cost incurred during the Covered Trip as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate (single supplement ).

If you carefully examine this policy wording, you ll see what I mean: (italics mine)

The Company will reimburse You, up to the maximum shown on the Confirmation of Coverage for Trip Cancellation, for the additional cost incurred during the Covered Trip as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for prepaid travel arrangements if a person booked to share accommodations with You has his/her Covered Trip delayed, canceled, or interrupted for a covered reason and You do not cancel.

The reason the traveler still going on the trip doesn t get their single supplement costs paid in a claim is because the Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows a person to cancel for a not-covered reason .

Let us tell you a story

Madeline and her friends from college had long planned a tour of the pyramids and monuments of Egypt. On Madeline’s 50th birthday, they decided the time had come. So they scheduled flights into Cairo and purchased a package tour.

Just three weeks before their scheduled departure, however, news of political unrest and reports of rioting, looting, and gunfire flashed across their televisions. The U.S. State Department orders non essential personnel and their families to leave the country. Trip cancellation coverage does not apply to situations of political unrest, but having ‘cancel for any reason’ coverage on their travel policies meant that Madeline and her friends could recover their costs and wait for a safer time to travel.

What does ‘Cancel for any reason’ cover?

This coverage provides reimbursement (up to the covered amount) for non refundable trip payments and pre-paid trip deposits if you have to cancel your trip for any reason not covered under the trip cancellation benefit.

This benefit is separate and different from trip cancellation coverage. ‘Cancel for any reason’ coverage is considered a ‘fail-safe’ by many travel insurance buyers who worry they may have to cancel their trip for a reason that is not covered by trip cancellation coverage and want to recover at least a portion of their expenses.

Understanding Cancellation Penalties

Coverage amounts vary from 50-100% depending on the plan and, in some cases, are subject to cancellation penalties. A cancellation penalty is the amount the travel supplier will not refund you if you have to cancel. The cancellation penalty determines the percentage that travel insurance will reimburse less the amount refunded by your travel supplier.

Using the above story as our example:

  • Madeline’s trip cost $5,000 and tour operator imposes a 50% cancellation penalty if the cancellation occurs no less than two weeks prior to departure.
  • Madeline cancels and is penalized 50%, or $2,500, by the tour operator who agrees to refund half her trip cost.
  • Madeline’s travel insurance penalty schedule provides 90% reimbursement if the penalty amount is up to 50% of the trip cost.

Especially when you spend months planning a trip, the Cancel for Any Reason clause, an optional benefit of travel insurance also referred to as CFAR, gives you the opportunity to cancel your travel plans for reasons not covered in the standard policy. With CFAR, you can bypass the list of typical covered reasons and receive greater freedom and flexibility.

Cannot be Purchased Separately

While you cannot purchase CFAR separately, you can tack it on as an add-on benefit. Nevertheless, you should always examine the clauses carefully. For example, when offered as part of a comprehensive plan, it may only be available if you meet a specific criteria. When you meet all the conditions, most of your policies will reimburse you for 75 percent of the costs associated with the trip unless it has been noted otherwise.

The Requirements of Eligibility

In general, you normally will have to buy the policy within 10 to 21 days of making your initial trip payment if you will be eligible for CFAR. In some cases, a travel insurance company requires that CFAR buyers purchase the entire dollar amount of their travels if they will receive coverage. Claim Stipulations

CDC: Don’t Cancel Hawaii Vacations Because of Dengue Outbreak

There have been 88 confirmed cases since Sept. 11, with only 13 of those being tourists, the state Department of Health said to the AP.

It isn t abnormal for 400 million people worldwide to be infected by this mosquito-borne virus per year, the AP explained. This isn t a huge outbreak compared to elsewhere, Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, told the AP.

Dengue fever is not endemic to Hawaii, but can be spread by travelers who come from endemic regions. You can only be infected via the bite of an infected mosquito, not from person-to-person contact, the AP noted.

Many, many more people are traveling internationally, thus the possibility of importing a disease like dengue to a place like Hawaii. is obviously going up, Petersen said to the AP.

Depending on the quality of medical treatment, as the AP put it, dengue fever isn t fatal which is good news, but weathering the virus isn t exactly a boatload of fun. High fever, headache, nausea, muscle aches, bone and joint pain and rash are all in store for the sufferer. There is no vaccination or specific treatment: just bed rest, plus acetaminophen for fever and pain, and symptoms typically clear up completely in 1 to 2 weeks, according to the AP.

No deaths have resulted from this recent outbreak in Hawaii, state Department of Health spokesperson Janice Okubo revealed to the AP.

But just to be sure, as per the official CDC dengue site. protect yourself from mosquito bites and go on your vacation as planned. If you consider how many tens of thousands of people come to the islands every day the risk is extremely small, he said to the AP. Simple measures like mosquito repellent. can greatly reduce your risk.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is keeping an eye on the outbreak s progress and intends to keep tourists informed. To date, we have not seen an increase in cancellations due to dengue fever, Hawaii Tourism Authority President and CEO George Szigeti said in a statement, per the AP. And at this point, it is too early to determine if there has been any economic impact on our industry.

Mosquito control measures are key, and authorities are trying spread the word to all corners of the Big Island, especially in rural areas.

I know our message isn t getting out to everyone out there, said State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park to lawmakers at an informational briefing, according to the AP. She requested that residents look out for their neighbors and help them eradicate mosquito breeding grounds, such as standing water.

The CDC is supporting Hawaii health officials and the Hawaii National Guard flew in sprayer equipment from Honolulu all in the effort to stop the dengue fever outbreak cold.

Life throws us a curveball once in a while – it’s funny like that. So when it comes to planning travel months in advance, a little extra protection can be extremely beneficial.

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional benefit of travel insurance coverage which offers the opportunity to cancel travel plans for reasons other than those listed as “covered reasons” on a policy. CFAR allows you to bypass that list, giving you greater flexibility and freedom when making decisions about travel reservations. You cannot purchase CFAR separately – it can only be an “add-on” benefit. It is offered as a part of certain comprehensive plan and will only be available if you meet certain criteria. If you meet all the conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Typically, a policy must be purchased within 10-21 days of making the initial trip payment to be eligible for CFAR benefits. Egypt plane crash: Airlines cancel more Sharm el-Sheikh flights

Two airlines have cancelled all flights between Sharm el-Sheikh and the UK until January following the suspected bombing of a Russian passenger jet.

British Airways flights are cancelled up to and including 14 January and Easyjet services to the Egyptian resort are suspended until at least 6 January.

Easyjet said the move was made to provide some certainty to passengers travelling over the Christmas period.

BA said the decision was made following discussions with the UK government.

Monarch, Thomson and Thomas Cook have cancelled flights until dates in December.

Flights were halted after the UK government said the plane crash in the Sinai desert, which killed 224 people on 31 October, may have been caused by a bomb.

Easyjet said customers on affected flights could go to another destination, receive a full refund or get a flight voucher for future travel.

The airline said it was keeping flights, which are scheduled to operate from 16 January, “under review”.

It added: “The safety and security of our customers will continue to be our top priorities in any decisions we may make.”

Easyjet said on its website. “We are sorry for the inconvenience this will obviously cause, but we hope that being clear with all our customers at this point helps you to manage your plans with more certainty.

“The situation is beyond our control and passenger safety will always be our number one priority.”

Other dates flights have been cancelled until are:

    Monarch – 19 December Thomson – 9 December Thomas Cook – 10 December

Security measures

George McGregor from London, who had been due to fly to Sharm el-Sheikh told the BBC it was “excellent news” – but Easyjet should have cancelled the flights sooner.

“We were due to fly out on 23 December for Christmas and New Year. Total outlay, £1,444,” he said.

“Until today we could not get our money back to fund an alternative holiday, and faced a charge of £180 if we wanted to change flights.”

Ian Harrison, also from London, said he was first told he would only receive an exchange of flights but Easyjet has since offered him a refund.

“It was pretty hard to get alternative accommodation that close to Christmas, or alternative flights, so not much of an offer.

“I’ve pretty much cancelled my holiday.”

‘Value judgement’

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said decisions over the use of Sharm el-Sheikh airport were made by the UK authorities rather than airlines.

It said flights would only resume when the authorities were satisfied security was strong enough.

ABTA spokesman Sean Tipton said: “The airlines are setting dates to give people a bit of certainty on where they stand.

“The decision is not theirs about when the airport will be available again to use and there will be a degree of inconsistency in their policies because it is a value judgement.”

The Foreign Office, which advises against all but essential air travel to or from Sharm el-Sheikh. says there are currently no UK airlines operating flights to the resort.

Regular flights between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh were were suspended on 4 November.

Special security measures for flights returning to the UK, such as transporting hold baggage on separate planes, were put in place up to 17 November.

Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for bringing down the Airbus 321, operated by Russian airline Metrojet.

Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance Plans

The Cancel For Any Reason is just that cancelling your entire trip for a reason that is normally not covered (e.g. changing your mind). It s not Delay For Any Reason nor Interrupt For Any Reason .

Read Steve s helpful Blog post called Cancel Your Plane Ticket Or Pay The Change Fee? to learn how to correctly cancel your plane ticket so your Cancel For Any Reason coverage reimburses you for your airfare .

Here are some common trip cancellation reasons that aren t covered by Travel insurance as a standard reason, yet are covered by a Cancel For Any Reason Plan. Any of these events (and a lot more) are covered by a Cancel For Any Reason Plan:

  • You want to cancel your trip because you don t feel safe at your destination. With the rise of global terrorism, there are a lot of places in the world that were fine to visit, but now they can give you pause.
  • Along these lines, Civil Unrest and War aren t covered. If these things are happening at your destination, you probably won t want to go on your trip, either.
  • You just don t feel right about leaving. Maybe you just have a feeling it s not a good time to go on your trip. Ever had that feeling and you were glad you listened to it? I have: I was very close to my Paternal Grandparents. On August 29, 1997 I had a strong feeling I should, without delay, visit my Grandma who lived 200 miles away. I left immediately and had the best visit I ever had with her! Exactly 2 weeks later she died in her sleep. And, I was privileged to give the eulogy at her funeral.
  • You change your mind and don t want to go on your trip
  • You get a new job and your boss won t let you have the time off
  • Your adult children are idiots and their melodramas might cause you to cancel your trip
  • Your child or grandchild s team which is normally in last place is now in the State Championship Finals
  • Your already approved vacation comes at a bad time and you know it would be better if you didn t take your trip
  • Even though you and your significant other are madly in love , you still want to have a way out (maybe that plants a seed of discord?). More on this below .

Here Are The Purchase Deadlines:

  • The CSA Freestyle Luxe deadline is no later than 24 hours after your initial trip payment
  • The Travel Guard Gold s Travel Guard Platinum s deadline is no later than 14 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The MH Ross Complete plan s deadline is no later than 15 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The Travel Insured Plus and plans deadlines are no later than 21 days after the date you made your initial trip payment
  • The Travelex Max plan s deadline is no later than 30 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

All plans require:

  1. You insure 100% of your expected prepaid trip costs that would be non-refundable if you got hit by a cement truck on the day you were leaving for your trip and had to cancel at the last minute. Note this exception. The MH Ross Complete and TravelSafe Classic Plus plans allow you to insure the full prepaid cost of any specific travel arrangement without having to insure the full value of all your travel arrangements. For example, if you are flying to a cruise and you select Air / Cruise as your Type of Trip on the purchase application, you have to insure 100% of the cost of the airfare and the cruise to have CFAR coverage on the air and cruise. If you just insure the cruise, but not the full prepaid cost of the airfare you won t have CFAR on the air and cruise.;
  2. You also insure within 14 30 days (depending on the plan) of the payment for those arrangements including the cost of any subsequent arrangements (or any other subsequent arrangements not made through your travel agent) added to your Trip; and
  3. You are not disabled from travel at the time you pay your premium and
  4. You cancel your Trip more than two days (MH Ross, Travelex Max TravelSafe) or forty-eight hours (CSA, Travel Guard Travel Insured) prior to Your Scheduled Departure Date. Tip: 48 hours does not equal 2 calendar days. Click here to see why not .

Important: There will be no coverage available under the Optional Cancel For Any Reason Benefit, if purchased if you insure an amount less than your total prepaid trip costs that are subject to any scheduled penalty on your Departure Date.

This is handy to know: I use the term scheduled penalty below. A scheduled penalty is the total amount of money you d lose at the time you cancel your trip. Cruises Tours typically have a penalty schedule. And if you have a non-refundable airline ticket the entire cost will be the penalty because technically you can t get any of your money back if you cancel your trip.

Here s a big drawback (besides the price the fact you don t get a 100% refund) in the Cancel For Any Reason coverage:

A trip cancellation claim that is paid under the Cancel For Any Reason coverage means that any benefit you would get from cancelling your trip for a covered reason is lost. For example:

  • 2 people (significant others) are sharing a cabin on a cruise
  • Even though they are madly in love they still get Cancel For Any Reason coverage (maybe that plants a seed of discord?)
  • They have a falling out and one of them cancels their trip using their Cancel For Any Reason benefit
  • The other person does not receive the benefit (as in getting any money from the claim) of the additional cost incurred during the Covered Trip as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate (single supplement ).

If you carefully examine this policy wording, you ll see what I mean: (italics mine)

The Company will reimburse You, up to the maximum shown on the Confirmation of Coverage for Trip Cancellation, for the additional cost incurred during the Covered Trip as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for prepaid travel arrangements if a person booked to share accommodations with You has his/her Covered Trip delayed, canceled, or interrupted for a covered reason and You do not cancel.

The reason the traveler still going on the trip doesn t get their single supplement costs paid in a claim is because the Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows a person to cancel for a not-covered reason .
