Switch’s Las Vegas Data Center Stronghold Reaches North of 2 Million Square Feet

Switch has officially launched the latest massive facility on its homebase Las Vegas data center campus, bringing its total capacity in Sin City to more than 2 million square feet and about 315MW.

Switch, the largest data center provider in Vegas, recently started expanding to other markets. Known for its proprietary data center design, futuristic interiors, and ex-military security guards armed with machine guns, the company builds hyper-scale colocation facilities and lists among its top customers Amazon Web Services, eBay, Hulu, and NASA.

Its latest Las Vegas 10 data center adds about 350,000 square feet of data center space and can provide up to 40MW of power. It is designed to the same specifications as the previously existing Las Vegas 8 and Las Vegas 9 facilities.

The design, according to Switch, is a brain child of its founder and CEO, Rob Roy, who designed everything from mechanical and electrical systems to the roof and conference-room interiors. The company leans heavily on its data center design for setting itself apart from competitors, and earlier this month announced its own design standard, called Tier 5 Platinum, which includes a long list of characteristics that aren’t covered by the industry’s most widely used and recognized data center design rating system created by the Uptime Institute.

Switch had portions of Las Vegas 8 and 9 data centers certified by Uptime. Both received Tier IV Gold certification, the highest rating in the system designed to evaluate data center infrastructure reliability. Switch said it would not pursue Uptime certification for any of its future facilities because the system doesn’t take into account elements such as network carrier redundancy and availability of renewable energy, among many others. It also complained that Uptime doesn’t do enough to police misuse of its terminology by data center providers.

Switch’s current design is called Switch MOD 250 (Modularly Optimized Design). Modularity enables data center providers to expand capacity in a building quickly by installing standardized, pre-fabricated infrastructure components.

The company launched its first non-Las Vegas data center in February of this year. The first building on its Citadel Campus outside of Reno, Nevada, has eBay as the anchor tenant and measures 1.3 million square feet; it can support up to 130MW of power. The following month Switch announced the launch of a data center in Michigan. inside a re-purposed pyramid-shaped former office building, and in May said it had secured land to build data centers in Atlanta .

The company is also building data centers in Italy and Thailand. Both international projects are partnerships with local investors.

Concert tickets will no longer be available for purchase at the American Airlines Center Box Office on the first day of ticket sales. Tickets for such non-team events may be purchased by the general public on the first day of ticket sales online at, by phone at 800-745-3000 and at Ticketmaster kiosks located inside Fiesta Foods, Macy s, Wal-Marts, and The Shops at Willow Bend Mall.

Remaining available tickets for any concert/event following the first day of general public ticket sales will be available for purchase at the American Airlines Center Box Office on the next business day that the box office is open.

The American Airlines Center Box Office accepts payment in the form of VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and cash.

There are no refunds and no exchanges on any ticket purchased for an American Airlines Center concert, game or event. In the event that a show is canceled or rescheduled, please contact the original point of purchase.

    Matthew C. Fedor, MD

    Dr. Fedor received his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. His internship and residency training in Internal Medicine as well as his fellowships in Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology were completed at the New York University Medical School in New York, NY. He is Board Certified in both Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. Dr. Fedor has published in multiple peer reviewed journals and has presented at national meetings of the American College of Cardiology. He has been a primary investigator of multiple clinical trials relating to arrhythmia and cardiac device therapy. He performs cardiac device implantations and ablation procedures for control of abnormal heart rhythm including atrial fibrillation. He finished his fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Arizona, Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona. He then completed a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at The University of Arizona. He also specializes in Carotid and Peripheral Vascular Interventions. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology. He has co-authored two medical textbooks and has been published in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the Medical Director for the Salem Health Heart and Vascular Institute. He is married with two children.

    Barath Krishnamurthy, MD

    A native Minnesotan, Dr. Krishnamurthy received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, where he graduated in the top 15% of his class. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Jacobi Medical Center in New York (where he served as Chief Resident), Dr. Krishnamurthy completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and a second fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, also at Tufts. During this second fellowship, Dr. Krishnamurthy received advanced training in the areas of high risk, highly complex coronary and peripheral interventions and in the interpretation of advanced imaging studies.

    Dr. Krishnamurthy has participated in numerous cardiology research projects, and has co-authored a number of papers in medical journals. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

    An avid jazz and blues fan, Dr. Krishnamurthy also enjoys hiking, camping, mountain biking, tennis and cooking. His wife, Christine, is an emergency room physician. They are the proud parents of two daughters.

    Kevin H. Thompson, DO

    Dr. Thompson received his medical degree at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Vallejo, California, where he graduated with highest honors. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center where he was selected as Chief Resident. He went on to complete a Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. He serves as a Fellow at the American College of Cardiology and as an Associate Professor at Western University of Health Sciences.

    Dr. Thompson is trained in interventional cardiology and performs various procedures, including angioplasty and stent insertion of the coronary arteries. He has a specific interest in complex coronary interventions, including stent insertions to chronic complete blockages called chronic total occlusions (CTO). He is also one of the few cardiologists that performs most of his procedures from the wrist (radial approach) which minimizes bleeding, improves patient comfort, and minimizes bed rest.

    Dr. Thompson believes comprehensive, quality care includes personalized education, guidance, and support for each patient. Through compassionate, but honest dialogue, Dr. Thompson strives to help patients through what is often one of the most difficult times of their lives, and to improve the quality of their lives for many years to come. He finds it satisfying to watch patients let go of unhealthy habits, adopt new positive behaviors, and effectively take charge of their lives. He is a strong proponent of exercise to reduce future cardiac events and serves as Medical Director for Cardiac Rehabilitation at Salem Hospital. He is a community speaker and advocate for women s heart health issues.

    Dr. Thompson is married (his wife Kim is also a physician) and has two young boys. He and his family enjoy outdoor activities. Dr. Thompson is an avid college basketball fan and North Carolina Tarheel supporter.

    Each semester, when the Counseling Center has no more capacity to add new clients seeking ongoing counseling, we replace initial consultations (ICONs) with one-time sessions for the remainder of the semester. As of Monday, July 31 st the Counseling Center will begin offering one-time sessions. These one-time sessions are an hour in length and focus on problem solving more immediate issues. If students are in need of further services, we will help them connect with additional resources outside of the Counseling Center.

    Counseling Center services are free, confidential, and provided by trained professionals to currently enrolled Texas State students while classes are in session.

    Counseling Center Services include brief individual, group, and couples counseling, consultation and crisis response, and workshops about coping with stress and other mental health topics.

    Air Force One Has New Defensive Systems, Antennas

    Plans for a new presidential aircraft by the end of the decade have been set aside, but the current flying White House is constantly being upgraded and has been observed with new communications and defensive systems.

    A new aircraft was once expected sooner. We have recognized for several years now that the Air Force One replacement is out there in our future in the late teens, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said in September 2011. But since then, the recapitalization plan has been put on hiatus.

    President Barack Obama famously criticized Detroit automobile executives for using business jets to fly to Washington for a Capitol Hill appearance. That, plus a simple absence of funding, means that what the Air Force calls Presidential Aircraft Recapitalization (PAR) is going nowhere. In the past the Air Staff quoted a target date of 2017, and later revised it to 2019. More recently, officials say a new plane for the commander-in-chief is still farther away.

    The Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380 have been named as possible candidates to replace the existing presidential Boeing 747s. In 2009, Airbus s parent company said it would offer a candidate to any competition for a new Air Force One.

    There appears to be no issue of structural fatigue with the presidential 747s. As of 2009, the last year for which figures were released, each aircraft had flown about 6,500 hours and was expected to log 450 hours per year. A 747 airliner of the same vintage, kept in the air far more often, would have at least ten times as many airframe hours on its structure.

    Bumps and Bulges

    Air Force One is the radio callsign for any Air Force aircraft with the president aboard. The term is used conversationally to refer to two VC-25As, or Boeing 747-200s (serial numbers 86-28000 and 86-29000) that have pulled presidential transportation duty since 1990. George H. W. Bush was the first president to fly on one of the 747s.

    The aircraft are flown by the Presidential Airlift Group (PAG), and belong to Air Mobility Command s 89th Airlift Wing, based at Andrews AFB, Md.

    During a stop at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. in June, aircraft 86-29000 was seen to be equipped with various items that help keep the president in touch and provide security.

    Not new to the VC-25A:

    • About five AN/ALQ-204 Matador infrared (IR) countermeasures devices are located at the tail and behind the four engines, Previously used on the VC-137C (Boeing 707-320B) presidential aircraft and on airliners and executive aircraft, the device emits pulsed IR signals to foil attacks by heat-seeking missiles.

    Thought to be new or recent additions to the VC-25A:

    • An AN/AAR-54(V) missile launch warning receiver located at the tail is intended to report and track missile threats by zeroing in on their ultraviolet exhaust signature. The receiver is also in use on special-operations warplanes like the MC-130H Combat Talon II.
    • The AN/AAQ-24 Nemesis Directional Infra-Red Counter Measures (DIRCM) system, which can be directed by the AAR-54, fires pulsating flashes of IR energy that confuse a missile s guidance system.
    • Conformal antennas: the VC-25As have been retrofitted with multi-purpose conformal antennas adaptable to satellite communications systems and other purposes. They resemble Band-Aids or patches but are, in fact, antennas that appear to have no effect on the aerodynamic performance of the 747.

    Secrets of the Superhuman Food Pyramid: Negative Effects of Safflower Oil

    Safflower oil is a colorless, flavorless, and odorless edible oil extracted from the safflower plant. Safflower’s history dates back to the ancient times, with the crop cultivated for its use in fabric dyes. Today, safflower is mainly farmed for its seeds which is the source of this plant’s edible oil. The United States is one of the major producers of the crop, making this edible oil available throughout the year. Though you can readily buy safflower oil, keeping it from your diet is advised for a host of health reasons.

    Safflower Oil s Risks:

    Safflower oil is a potent source of polyunsaturated fats or PUFAs. PUFAs assist in the lowering of bad cholesterol levels in the blood, and can therefore mitigate the risks of developing heart diseases especially if PUFAs are utilized as a substitute for saturated fats and trans fats. But there is a downside to this. As it turns out, PUFAs not only lower the bad cholesterol levels called low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, PUFAs simultaneously decrease the good cholesterol levels called high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol as well. So unless safflower oil is taken alongside edible oils like olive oil. which by the way are high in monounsaturated fats and therefore will not lower the HDL levels, then steering clear of safflower oil would then be prudent.

    Safflower oil is one of the few edible oils that do not contain vitamin E. This conventional antioxidant vitamin is crucial as it helps in the eradication of free radicals in the body and therefore minimizes overall oxidative damage which can cause a host of conditions from skin aging to cancer. Opting for other edible oils that are rich in vitamin E like macadamia nut oil and coconut oil is then better than settling for safflower oil.

    Safflower oil supplementation appears to aggravate renal injury as well. In a Japan-based study. stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats were given a variety of edible oils, one of which was safflower oil. As it turns out, those fed with the latter had increased serum protein in their urine, indicating severe damage to the kidneys. It would then be prudent for individuals who have had strokes, or have existing heart or kidney diseases to steer clear of safflower oil unless otherwise advised by their respective healthcare providers.

    Safflower oil consumption may trigger allergic reactions as well. This is because safflower belongs to the same family of flowers as daisies, and individuals with sensitivity to the latter should avoid safflower oil at all costs. Safflower has cross-allergenicity with ragweed, mugwort, as well sagebrush pollen, and so individuals with known sensitivity to said plants should stay away from safflower oil as well.

    Safflower oil may bring about gastrointestinal maladies, too. Stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting were reported by individuals who took safflower oil supplements. Taking safflower oil in large doses may result in lowered blood pressure as well and so individuals with hypotension should see to it to speak with their doctors first prior to taking this edible oil. Safflower oil appears to affect the body’s capability to clot blood as well, and so those with bleeding disorders, or who are taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications, or those who will undergo surgery, need to avoid safflower oil at all costs.

    Christian alcoholism is a very painful disease because if often includes the shame and guilt of hiding it from the church.     Expository Counseling Training Center

    Expository Counseling Training Center is the training portion of the Expository Counseling Center. ECTC (Expository Counseling Training Center) seeks to provide online and onsite based training for Biblical Counseling. ECTC provides 5 basic biblical counseling training courses that are developed by Dr. Nicolas Ellen. Each l evel of teaching is 14 weeks in length. There are also outside class readings, Scripture memorization, make-the-connection assignments, and case studies. Tuition is $350 per Level. The 5 basic biblical counseling training courses developed by Dr. Ellen have been recognized by the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors and are used by an ACBC Training center (The College of Biblical Studies in Houston, Texas) as part of their process to move individuals into ACBC certification.

    Since the Expository Counseling Center respects and appreciates The Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (also known as ACBC), the ECC provides a 6 week training to prepare individuals to take the ACBC exams (which must be passed in order for one to move into ACBC certification), and 12 hours of counseling observations for individuals pursuing ACBC certification (10 hours is required in order for one to move into ACBC certification). Since Dr. Nicolas Ellen is a Fellow with ACBC, The Expository Counseling Center offers counseling supervision via Dr. Ellen for those entering phase 3 of the ACBC certification process. Tuition for the ACBC Exam Prep is $150 and $500 for phase 3 ACBC supervision. (Go to to find out more about their process for biblical counseling certification).

    The Expository Counseling Center also respects and appreciates The International Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. The Expository Counseling Center has been sanctioned by the IABC to lead individuals into complete biblical counseling certification with their organization via The Expository Counseling Training Center. The ECTC will provide the biblical counseling training via the 5 basic biblical counseling courses developed by Dr. Nicolas Ellen and provide the theology and counseling exams which are produced by the IABC. ECTC will also grade the exams, and provide the 50 hours of supervision via Dr. Nicolas Ellen, in order to certify individuals as IABC Biblical Counselors. Tuition for IABC Exam Prep is $150 and $350 for IABC counseling supervision.

    In this level, students will learn the connection between systematic theology and biblical counseling. Students will evaluate the doctrine of God, Christ, Holy Spirit, Man, Sin, Salvation, Sanctification, various others doctrines and learn how genuine biblical counseling comes out of these doctrines. Students will also learn the history of the biblical counseling movement in the United States.

    (14 Weeks) Tuition is $350

    In this level, students will learn the basic principles of Biblical Counseling and be able to distinguish it from secular counseling and counseling that integrates psychology and the Bible. Students will learn how the Bible has it s own framework by which we can address any and all non-organic problems from the Scriptures. This includes those issues that the world would describe as psychological or mental disorders. Students will learn how to analyze issues from a biblical framework, categorize issues through a biblical framework, and provide biblical solutions through a biblical framework.

    (14 Weeks) Tuition is $350

    In this level, students will explore issues such as the fear of man, idolatrous lust, depression, divorce, separation, abuse, remarriage, death, trials, suffering, psychotropic drugs, biblical view of self esteem, dealing with the past and many other issues and learn to deal with them from a biblical perspective.

    Level Four:Marriage and Family Basic Training Course

    (14 Weeks) Tuition is $350

    In this level, students will learn the foundations for marriage and family as God designed. Students will explore God’s design for marriage as well explore some basic parenting skills.

    Level Five: The Dynamics of Biblical Counseling

    In this level, students will learn the mechanics of biblical counseling. Students will observe 12 hours of biblical counseling as well as do some case studies. Students also will learn concepts of biblical analysis, categories of biblical change, phases and stages of biblical change, and categories of homework for counselees. Moreover, students will learn policies and procedures for governing a counseling ministry, how to use a personal data inventory form, how to use a consent to counsel form, how to organize and structure a counseling session as well as how to fill out a case report form after a session.

    (6 Weeks) Tuition is $150

    Students will go through each question on the ACBC Exam and learn how to answer those questions. Students will learn which resources are available to answer each question. Students will learn how to cite their sources for the answers they find from those sources provided by the training.

    Students will memorize 16 Scripture verses to enhance their counseling.

    Make-the-Connections and Case Studies

    In order to teach students how to analyze problems through a biblical framework and to categorize problems through a biblical framework, students will be given 50 make-the-connection assignments over the course of study. These assignments will challenge the student’s skill in connecting various characteristics to a biblical framework. Students will be assigned 30 counseling cases over the entire training period to teach them how to analyze, categorize and solve problems from a biblical framework perspective.

    50 hours of counseling supervision via Dr. Nicolas Ellen, will be provided for IABC students and for students in Phase 3 of ACBC certification. This will entail filling out case report forms and counseling logs, tape recording five of one’s counseling sessions to be listened to by Dr. Ellen for evaluation of one’s skill, discussing the dynamics of various counseling cases, and developing in biblical counseling methods through the 50 hours of supervision.

    Extended Auto Warranty Companies Reviewed

    Finding the best plan at the right price is not easy so you’ll have to take time to shop around. Of course you have to first decide if you actually need the warranty. This will depend on personal preferences and how much of the future risks you are willing to take care of. While most cars will require numerous repairs for as long as you own them, some will need no more than routine maintenance. Then there are those that will require unexpected but very expensive repairs. Just like when purchasing a vehicle, the best way is to compare different options on the internet. Fortunately, there are independent companies that review and rate extended auto warranty providers for clients.

    Extended auto coverage is available for new as well as used cars. Since new cars come with a factory warranty, the need for extended coverage largely depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle. For example, most factory plans usually last three years or up to 36,000 miles. Now if you intend to keep the car for two or three years, purchasing an extended warranty may make little sense. However, if you plan on keeping the car for a long time after the factory warranty expires then it’s a good idea to extend your protection. If buying a used car, there is a high probability that the factory coverage plan will not be transferable or will have expired so you’ll need extra protection.

    It’s always good to know what is covered, and what’s not covered by the Vehicle Service Contract you intend to buy. Does it cover wear and tear? What about breakdown? Under breakdown, some warranties cover only the parts that break. But you know well that not all parts fail due to breakdown so such a policy will be less inclusive than is desirable. Some policies extend coverage to parts that wear out with time under the “wear and tear” subtitle. Again, not all extended policies have this feature. Some contracts do not cover ABS brakes and most of them don’t cover overheating. Transmission, engine, seals and gaskets, drive axle assembly and turbocharger/superchargers will usually be covered, though it is better to fully explore specific options before committing to a plan.

    Some companies require that you pay the repair and submit a receipt to the warranty provider for reimbursement. While this is not a bad idea, you may sometimes have to wait for weeks or even months before you get your money back. Then there are those that pay the repair shop directly and almost immediately. For purposes of convenience, never purchase warranties that don’t pay the shop directly.

    How Judges Set Bail

    Judges ordinarily set a bail amount at a suspect s first court appearance after an arrest, which may be either a bail hearing or an arraignment. Judges normally adhere to standard practices (for example, setting bail in the amount of $500 for nonviolent petty misdemeanors). However, judges can raise or lower the standard bail, or waive bail altogether and grant release on the defendant’s “own recognizance,” or O.R. based on the circumstances of an individual case.

    Defendants do not need a lawyer to to arrange for bail. They can either post cash bail personally, or phone a bail bond seller and arrange for a bond. Relatives or friends can come to a jail or court and post cash bail for an arrested person or purchase a bond from a bail bond seller.

    Factors That Influence Bail Amounts

    In addition to the seriousness of the charged crime, the amount of bail usually depends on factors such as a defendant s past criminal record, whether a defendant is employed, and whether a defendant has close ties to relatives and the community.


    In recent years, courts have started using math to inform decisions about pretrial release. In these jurisdictions, select information about the defendant is entered into a program and a score or recommendation comes out. These bail algorithms, which consider factors like age and criminal history, are supposed to assess the risk that the defendant will commit another crime or fail to appear in court.

    Judges may legally deny bail altogether in some circumstances. For example, if another jurisdiction has placed a warrant (hold) on a defendant, a judge is likely to keep the defendant in custody at least long enough for the other jurisdiction to pursue its charge. And bail may be denied to a defendant who is likely to flee the jurisdiction before the case concludes.

    Example: Rosie Olla is arrested and charged with managing a large prostitution ring. Rosie is a naturalized American citizen born in Spain, and her family still lives in Barcelona. While searching Rosie after her arrest, the police found that she was carrying a passport and $5,000 in cash. Under these circumstances, a judge will probably be very reluctant to set bail for Rosie. Her family background and the fact that she was carrying a passport and a large amount of cash suggest that Rosie may flee to Spain if she is released on bail. Unless Rosie can explain to the judge why she was carrying the passport and cash, and can also demonstrate strong ties to the local community, a judge is likely to deny her request for bail.

    Bail Schedules

    In many areas of the country, defendants can post bail with the police even before they are brought to court for a bail hearing or an arraignment. Many jails have posted bail schedules, which specify bail amounts for common crimes. An arrested defendant can obtain release immediately after booking by paying the amount of bail set forth in the jailhouse bail schedule. Bail schedules can vary considerably according to locality, type of crime, and residency.

    As a general rule, bail for offenses classified as felonies is five to ten times the bail required for misdemeanors. The more serious and dangerous the crime, the higher the amount of bail is likely to be. As a general rule, a jailhouse bail schedule is inflexible. The police will not accept bail other than as set forth in a schedule; suspects wanting to pay less must go before a judge.

    As an alternative or in addition to jailhouse bail schedules, some areas have duty judges. A duty judge is available to fix bail over the phone, without the necessity for a formal court hearing. Like a jailhouse bail schedule, using a duty judge is an option for arrested persons who are anxious to bail out of jail before going to court.

    Police Practices That Affect Bail Amounts

    Unfortunately for many suspects who want to bail out of jail quickly, the police tend to arrest suspects for the most serious criminal charge that can possibly be supported by the facts at their disposal. For instance, the police may treat possession of a small amount of marijuana (a misdemeanor in most states) as an arrest for possession of marijuana with intent to sell (a felony in all states). Even though such a charge will almost certainly be reduced to a misdemeanor later in the case, it is a felony for the purposes of the bail schedule, and bail will be set accordingly.

    WSDOT – Washington State Ferries Visitors Center – Traveling to Canada

    Traveling to Canada

    It’s a beautiful journey aboard a Washington State Ferry as your car ferry sails from Anacortes through the San Juan Islands to Sidney, B.C. on Vancouver Island. Visitors can enjoy Butchart Gardens, with its hundreds of trees and masses of colorful flowers and shrubs. Take double decker buses on a sight-seeing trip from downtown Victoria. Sidney is just 17 miles from Victoria, a one-of-a-kind city, capital of British Columbia and a blend of English and Canadian architecture, flavor and charm. This 2-3 hour cruise provides beautiful scenery, picture opportunities and views of island living.

    WSF recommends making vehicle reservations

    If you are traveling by vehicle between Anacortes and Sidney, B.C. or between the San Juan Islands and Sidney, B.C. you may make a reservation with us online or by phone .  No deposit is taken when making a reservation, but an American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa, is taken to confirm your reservation. The full fare will be paid when you arrive at the terminal. You will receive an email confirmation of your reservation after making an online or phone reservation.

    There is no service between Anacortes and Sidney B.C. during the Winter Schedule.

    Please note: A reservation is required for customers wishing to travel from Lopez, Shaw, or Orcas, to Friday Harbor as proof of payment/travel to catch the international sailing to Sidney B.C.

    Customers  that choose not to make a reservation to Canada from the San Juan Islands will be required to pay a vehicle/driver inter-island fare to continue to Friday Harbor.

    Identification is a requirement

    U.S. and Canadian citizens 16 years of age and older traveling to or from Sidney BC  must have  one of the following designated documents: passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license (EDL), or “trusted traveler” document such as a Nexus Card. Travelers must have required travel documents such as passports and visas if necessary, ready and in hand at the tollbooth. Passengers must arrive at least 60 min. prior to the scheduled departure in order to facilitate documentation screening at the tollbooth or risk missing the sailing.

    The EDL is available from the  Washington State Department of Licensing  and in many other states. Please check your local department of licensing for more information.

    Children traveling to Canada

    U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 15 years old or younger are allowed to travel with their birth certificate, as are teens between the ages of 16-18 if they are a part of an adult supervised school, religious, cultural or athletic group.

    If both birth parents are not traveling, you must have written authorization from the parent(s) along with a telephone number where they can be reached to verify the authorization or proof of custody. Failure to provide such evidence may make you inadmissible to enter Canada.

    Passenger-Only Ferry Service

    • Victoria Clipper. owned by Clipper Navigation, sails from Seattle to Victoria and offers reservations for passengers and year-round service. Reservations are accepted.

    Automobile Ferry Service

    WSF has non-peak season rates that are significantly less than the peak season rates (peak season is May 1-Sept. 30). See our fares brochure  (pdf 516 kb) to compare rates. The non-peak season is a great time to travel to Victoria. Lower rates for accommodations are often available, so early holiday shopping or a quiet late-autumn escape can be affordable. WSF does not sail to Sidney during the winter.

  • BC Ferries sails from Vancouver, B.C. through the Gulf Islands to Swartz Bay, 20 miles north of Victoria. There are several departures throughout the day and reservations are accepted.
  • Black Ball Ferry Line travels from Port Angeles, WA to downtown Victoria, B.C. This routes links the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island. Reservations are accepted.


    The stop closest to the terminal is the one labeled “Fifth at Weiler.”

    Travelers heading to Victoria should be instructed to cross the street, as the bus stop on the terminal side is for BC Ferries-bound traffic (i.e. Vancouver). Cost per ride is $2.50 for all passengers, however, children under 5 are free.

    The bus system accepts only Canadian currency and requires exact change. Bus drivers do not carry change. Sidney has many banks and ATM machines along its main street so people can also walk to Beacon Avenue to change currency when they arrive.

    Helpful information 

    If you’ve ever had a felony

    Foreign nationals with a single minor crime conviction (DUI, shoplifting, etc.) may apply to be given a one-time Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) and will be allowed to go to Canada. They will not be afforded this a second time. If they have two or more convictions of minor crimes they will not be allowed into Canada.

    If they wish to enter Canada again, they will have to go to a consulate (one is located in Seattle) where they pay a fee to be “rehabilitated” and then they can go to Canada. The cost for this is $200 for a minor crime such as a DUI or shoplifting. It is $1,000 if a more serious conviction of a crime. NOTE: The person with the minor crime conviction must wait five years to apply for the rehabilitation fee.

    A Permanent Resident or a holder of the immigration “green card” needs to present a valid card at the border.

    The EnMAP Ground Segment has finished its Delta Critical Design Review (CDR) successfully on July 01, 2016. In this Delta CDR, design changes caused by advancements in multi mission facilities at GSOC and DFD used by EnMAP, evolution of the used software, the availability of improved algorithms (e.g. an improved atmospheric correction), and the enhancement of the design to meet new requirements like the INSPIRE conformity and sun-glint avoidance were reviewed. Also further technical developments in the Space Segment could be taken into account. In the Review Board, experts from ESA, OHB, GFZ, other satellite projects at DLR and DLR Space Administration were involved. Thus, the EnMAP Ground Segment now finally starts with phase D of the project, where the proposed design will be implemented and afterwards verified and validated.

The scope of the Science Plan is to provide an overview of the EnMAP mission including a description of system and data products, potential contributions to major fields of application, and scientific pre-launch activities. The document primarily addresses scientists and funding institutions, but may also be of interest for environmental stakeholders and governmental bodies. It is conceived to be a living document that will be updated throughout the entire mission.

    Three steps to a successful data center migration plan

    Getting pushback from customers to do it faster and cheaper without increasing downtime? Walk them through the data center applications and ask them how long they think the migration should take and what the consequences of downtime really are. Can they afford the risk of faster and cheaper?

    Step 2: Prove that your detailed plan supports service-level agreements (SLAs).

    A successful data center migration plan is based upon a solid migration plan that factors in overall program management, IT infrastructure, facilities planning and coordination, application migration and lots of contingency planning.

    Successful migrations always have a highly orchestrated plan executed by people who have data center migration experience. That’s the easy part.

    The hard part is proving that the application won’t break during the migration. Breaking an application means experiencing degraded performance or downtime outside of acceptable SLA limits. Creating a contingency plan for the application migration is essential to winning the confidence of the business so that the migration can take place. The more comfortable application owners are with the plan (and recovery), the more cooperative they will be. Their participation is critical from both a technical and functional perspective. You will need their help in the following areas:

    • Understanding the application architecture and dependencies
    • Validating the applications maps and inventories
    • Testing the application once it’s been moved
    • Understanding planned application releases and upgrades
    • Listing restrictions for peak seasonal activity, if any
    • Identifying customer SLAs that must be met

    Proving that your plan mitigates application downtime risk to the business is critical to the success of your data center migration plan.

    Step 3: Test and report on success and failure.

    Testing and reporting are critical components of a data center migration plan but are often understaffed and poorly funded — at least until something breaks. Solid testing and reporting offer the best insurance against production breakage. You just have to do it.

    The best planning in the world does not remedy poor execution. Excellent execution does not remove the need for testing. And testing twice is better than testing once.

    Organizations that regularly migrate applications rely on solid staging, testing and reporting mechanisms to ensure they minimize application disruption (downtime). They know the ultimate success measures of a data center migration are staying within budget, staying on time and minimizing disruption. It’s important to report testing results with application owners and highlight any problems you find so that you can jointly resolve them prior to the actual migration.

    Following these three guidelines doesn’t guarantee that the data center migration will be easy, but it will bring the seemingly impossible plan into the realm of the successful.

Assigned agents can receive real-time updates instantly and surpluses and shortages for each period of the day can easily be displayed for call center management.

    Exception planning and real-time adherence are also critical for call center management to want in a workforce management solution. This includes an integrated exception calendar to simplify scheduling of agent exceptions, including one-time or recurring meetings, time off and other activities.

    Real-time adherence compares planned agent activities against actual activities throughout the day. Real-time views on forecasted and actual call volumes are available, as well as other performance indicators. ACD integration allows call center management to collect data from the ACD and build a historical database. All of the center s workload and work time statistics in real-time are captured.

    Call center management must also look at configuration and administration when it comes to workforce management solutions. Multiple sites and time zones can be managed and hours of operation can be set according to the day of the week and service level goals can be minimized to 15 minutes.

    Finally, all members of call center management must have an eye on performance analysis. With the right workforce management platform in place, all agent activities are captured and reported on, including schedule adherence and key performance indicators. Call center management have the opportunity to review service level costs, results and revenue.

    Free Drug Rehabilitation Programs

    The state of California offers free alcohol and other drug treatment and rehabilitation services for California women and their children. The office of women’s and perinatal services (OWPS) is an expansion of the office of perinatal substance abuse (OPSA). OPSA was created in 1990 to address the widespread issue of perinatal substance abuse. Since 1990, they have established more than 300 programs that have resulted in improved alcohol and drug treatment services for pregnant and parenting women.

    These programs are required to provide comprehensive, gender-responsive services such as:


    A patient-centered, goal oriented process for assessing the needs of individual women for particular services; assisting each women in obtaining those services; and reviewing participant accomplishments, outcomes and road blocks to completing recovery goals. Case management may be either a part or the recovery and treatment programs or an individual offering.


    The DCH services are provided to a patient for two or more hours, but less than 24 hours a day, for three or more days per week. Participants may live independently, semi-independently, or in a supervised residential facility that does not provide DCH services.


    Residential or outpatient treatment services offered that will provide safe withdrawal or detoxification treatments in an ambulatory setting (pharmacological or non-pharmacological).

Completely opposite in design is the River course, the only Robert Trent Jones layout without a single bunker. The River Course is a throwback to the way courses were built long ago. The dirt was merely pushed up to create the greens and tees, leaving all else, including massive oak trees, undisturbed.

    HIGHLANDS Course Tour

    The Highlands course is one of the gems of the Trail. The finishing holes are scenic and challenging. One of the most recognizable landmarks on the Trail is the old mule barn beside the fifth hole.

    RIVER Course Tour

    The River course is laid out on former soybean fields in the flood plain of the Flint River. With water on 16 of the 18 holes, the River course will challenge your shot-making ability.


    The Short Course is open and links-like, with water in play on 11 holes and a large double green accommodating the 10th and 17th greens. Alternating tees allow golfers to hit every club in their bag.



    Relax. coordinating an event at Hampton Cove is much easier than you think! Our staff has experience planning golf events that range from as small as a 16 player group outing to as large as a 300+ player corporate tournament, as well as everything in between. With the array of other options we can also provide, including food beverage, contests, and scoring, our staff has what it takes to make your golfing experience match all your expectations.

    But just because we are a golf course does not mean that is all that we do! We are also available for non-golf related functions, including weddings and receptions, parties, reunions, wedding/baby showers, corporate meetings … the possibilities are endless!     Ask Me! Greeters
    Anyone who is compassionate makes a good volunteer. At Monongahela Valley Hospital, volunteers serve as extensions to practically every department. Some people welcome visitors as Ask Me Greeters in the main lobby while other volunteers help assemble patient education folders. People who volunteer can work flexible hours – as few as two hours per week, once a month, etc.

    MVH recognizes that everyone has special talents and the concierge who manages the Ask Me! Greeter program matches each person’s talent or strength with where they can make the greatest difference in the hospital.

    The Orthopedic Institute
    The Orthopedic Institute at Monongahela Valley Hospital is changing the way that patients and their families experience joint replacement. This proven program is centered around the fundamental principle of wellness and volunteers play an active role in the patient experience. Volunteers work beside the medical and professional staff as they provide care to patients. They support patients – serving-one-on-one – sometimes even as an extended family ‘coach’ during therapy and group activities when needed. The Orthopedic Institute volunteers also assist with the pre-op classes, group therapy sessions, group and reunion lunches, preparing and cleaning equipment for physical therapy, preparing patient information packets and visiting with and encouraging patients.
