Athletic Coach Job Description, Career as an Athletic Coach, Salary, Employment

Athletic Coach Job Description, Career as an Athletic Coach, Salary, Employment – Definition and Nature of the Work, Education and Training Requirements, Getting the Job

Education and Training: Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree plus training; state certification necessary for some positions

Salary: Mean $32,780 per year

Employment Outlook: Good

Definition and Nature of the Work

Athletic coaches instruct and work with athletes to prepare them for competition. Coaches help athletes to play their best individually or as a team in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, rowing, tennis, and golf. They are experts on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sports. Coaches must also know about sports equipment, physical fitness, and safety.

Coaches work in professional sports, college sports, and secondary school sports. Some coaches work individually with promising students at camps, clubs, and clinics designed specifically for teaching. Most coaches work in middle schools and high schools as part-time and full-time faculty members.

The first task for most coaches is to pick the players for a team. Selecting players involves knowing how to put together a balanced team, how to recognize potential athletic ability, and how to find and attract good players. Coaches at all levels look for players by scouting or sending out scouts to watch players on other teams. For instance, college scouts look for good high school players who may want to participate in college sports; professional team scouts look for promising college players.

After a team is formed, coaches help the athletes work out plays and strategies that suit their talents. Coaches must also prepare players mentally for competition, since it is important for athletes to have the right frame of mind so they can perform to the best of their abilities.

Middle school and high school coaches are often responsible for many administrative tasks. They may maintain supplies and equipment, reserve playing facilities, and schedule practices. In addition school athletic coaches must keep track of whether their players’ grades are high enough to make them eligible for school teams. Some high school coaches have assistants and student managers to help with these duties.

Professional teams and many college teams are run by large staffs that may include managers, trainers, and secretaries. Professional and college team coaches work for profit-making organizations and are consequently under pressure to deliver winning teams that draw paying fans to the games. The main responsibility of all coaches, however, is to their players. They must put the players first, a task that involves, for instance, being able to determine when a fatigued player should be removed from a game or how much time an injured player needs to recover. A team physician often helps with these decisions. Coaches help players perfect their abilities, keep them fit to compete, and teach them to put forth their best effort under the pressure of competitive play.

Education and Training Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is usually the minimum requirement for coaches who work in school systems; however, many schools only hire coaches with a master’s degree. Coaches work with team members to help them improve their skills. (Photograph by Kelly A. Quin. Thomson Gale. Reproduced by permission.) Some high schools also require their coaches to be state certified. Prospective athletic coaches should check the certification requirements in their state before making decisions that affect their education. Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is always helpful. Schools and colleges usually prefer to hire coaches who have varsity or professional playing experience. The most important qualifications, though, are a tremendous sense of motivation and a love of the game.

A coach must have good communication and supervisory skills, the ability to make decisions under pressure, maturity, and self-confidence. Many years of college coaching are necessary to coach a professional team.

Getting the Job

For a coaching position at a school, interested individuals should apply to the school district of their choice. At the middle school or high school level coaches may be required to work as teachers of physical education or another subject. Candidates for a position as an instructional coach in a country club, tennis club, camp, or gym should apply directly to facilities of this type. Professional coaches are usually recruited by team managers and owners.

Advancement Possibilities and Employment Outlook

Coaches who start by coaching small high school or college teams may move on to schools with larger, more well-known athletic departments. Advancement ultimately depends on the success of the team, which among other factors is influenced by the coach’s educational background and ability to deal with players on a personal level. Coaches in some sports go into business for themselves by buying and operating a sports club.

The employment outlook for athletic coaches is expected to grow as fast as the average through the year 2014. Sports of all kinds are popular throughout the nation, and many new school and professional teams are being formed; however, competition for some coaching positions especially those at the university level will be intense because those openings occur only as a result of coaches retiring or being let go.

Working Conditions

Coaching is a high-pressure job that offers little security. The fans, the school administration, or the club owners want winning teams and may blame the coach if the team loses. Coaches must work hard to develop good teams if they want to keep their jobs. Prospective athletic coaches can expect to spend a considerable amount of time on the road going to games and often have to spend nights and weekends on the job. The best coaches are those who think that the excitement of the games and the opportunity to work in sports is worth all of the hard work and long hours.

Earnings and Benefits

Salaries for coaches depend on the type of sports and the size of the schools or athletic departments for which they work. Other factors affecting salaries include experience, education, and geographic location. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean annual salary for all athletic coaches in 2004 was $32,780. College coaches earn more. Many high school coaches earn $800 to $3,000 per year in addition to their teaching salaries. Coaches can earn extra money in the off-season or in the summer by working for camps and clinics. Top professional coaches may earn $800,000 per year or more.

Paralegal Certificate, Certification and Certified: What – s the Difference? #certification

You are here: Home / Blog / Paralegal Certificate, Certification and Certified: What s the difference?

Paralegal Certificate, Certification and Certified: What s the difference?

This blog is going to cover paralegal certificates, but first I want to make sure that you understand the distinction between a certificate and being certified or having certification. The easy way to remember it is that schools do not offer certification they offer certificates; having a certificate or degree can lead to being certified or attaining certification. In other words, the certificate or degree comes first. Certification requires taking qualification exams through state agencies or paralegal associations, along with meeting any other educational or professional guidelines mandated by the certificate-granting association, state or agency. For example, two national professional associations that offer a paralegal (or legal assistant) certification credential are the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).

*Whether you’re looking to earn an undergraduate degree in preparation for the Certified Paralegal Exam, or ready to advance your career with a master’s degree in legal studies, accredited online programs make it easier than ever to get the education you need:

What is a paralegal certificate and how does it compare with a degree?

    Types of Paralegal Certificate Programs

Most paralegal certificates are post-baccalaureate programs. In other words, they re for students who already have a bachelor s degree or, at the very least, an associate degree. This degree doesn t necessarily have to be in paralegal studies: you can have a bachelor s degree in business, fine arts, political science or pretty much anything. The main thing is that you have a higher education foundation that includes humanities, math, English and social sciences, and have developed reading, writing and communication skills that you can draw upon in your professional life. A post-baccalaureate certificate program can help you reach the next level of professionalism as it often lends itself to specialization in a specific area in this case paralegal studies.

A few paralegal certificate programs can be completed right after high school. It is very important to distinguish between the two types of programs: post-baccalaureate programs are more like graduate programs, whereas programs that can be completed right after high school provide more of a technical continuing education with little or no general education to round out the course of study.

There is a definite advantage to entering the workplace with a general education under your belt in addition to legal classes, and many employers specifically require an associate or bachelor s degree as a prerequisite for employment. However, if you need to enter the workforce right away, are already working straight out of high school and want to add paralegal skills to your resume for potential advancement or simply do not have the funds for a degree, then a certificate program that does not require a bachelor s or associate degree as a prerequisite may be for you.

    What s Required

Certificate programs generally require anywhere from 18 to 45 credit hours. Since many, or even most students are already working, these programs are frequently set up so that they can be completed through night or weekend classes and/or on a part-time basis. Many certificate program can be completed within a year, even on a part-time basis, although most schools accommodate students by allowing them to take longer to complete a program.

Post-baccalaureate programs vary in what areas of the law they cover, but most include legal research, legal writing, an introductory course in paralegalism, substantive law and a choice of courses in specialty areas of the law. Some schools offer multiple paralegal certificate options. For instance, some post-baccalaureate certificate programs offer emphases in areas like nursing paralegal, criminal law paralegal, business paralegal or educational paralegal. Within each of these programs are a few courses that focus on the law as it applies to that specialty.

One great thing about these post-baccalaureate programs is that the students who apply to and complete these programs are generally older, more mature, have some work experience and are extremely motivated to excel in their chosen profession. These programs are definitely on a higher rung on the educational ladder than technical certificate programs, and as such are seen by potential employers as recognizable and valued achievements.

The Role of a Certificate in Certification

The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), one of the two main nationwide paralegal associations, requires that those who take the Certified Paralegal examination to become a Certified Paralegal have a paralegal education. Specifically, they require:

    • Graduation from a paralegal program that is:
    • (a) Approved by the American Bar Association; or
    • (b) An associate degree program; or
    • (c) A post-baccalaureate certificate program in paralegal studies;
    • (d) A bachelor s degree program in paralegal studies; or
    • (e) A paralegal program which consists of a minimum of 60 semester hours (900 clock hours or 90 quarter hours) of which at least 15 semester hours (225 hours or 22.5 quarter hours) are substantive legal courses
    • Alternative qualifications call for a bachelor s degree in any field, plus a year of paralegal working experience or seven years of working experience as a paralegal.

Thus, if you already have an associate or bachelor s degree and complete a post-baccalaureate certificate program you meet the educational requirements for taking the Certified Paralegal examination, and with a qualified score on that exam you gain the designation of Certified Paralegal or Certified Legal Assistant. Law Offices, corporations and other employers recognize this as a milestone of professional excellence and certification is frequently a preferred prerequisite for many paralegal positions. (NALA also offers an Advanced Paralegal Certification for those who already Certified Paralegals.)

    Choosing a Paralegal Certificate Program

Certificate programs that offer specialized tracks can be excellent options for those who are seeking job fulfillment through specific areas of the law. For example, you may wish to become involved in ecology, and with a certificate track in environmental paralegal studies you will most likely find that the doors of NGOs with environmental missions will open wider for you. And, because the law impacts insurance, medical facilities and other areas of medicine, including drug companies, individuals who already have nursing degrees can graduate from nursing paralegal certificate programs and find paralegal positions in those fields because of their specialized knowledge.

A certificate program is an excellent choice for working individuals who are looking to make a career change, whether within their field or in uncharted territory. It can also serve as an good opportunity for those considering law school as it enables students to get their feet wet in the legal field.

Paralegal certificate programs can even benefit those who don t aspire to be working paralegals. Because the law impacts every aspect of our society, anyone who adds legal knowledge to their portfolio is also creating potential for advancement in their current job.

Things to consider when looking for a certification program that fits your needs and goals include:

    • Are you looking for a simple technical certificate or a post-baccalaureate program?
    • Are you looking for a program with specialized tracks?
    • Is your undergraduate degree already in legal or paralegal studies? If so, does the certificate program cover new ground that will allow you to expand you knowledge or will it simply rehash what you have already learned?
    • If you didn t cover legal studies in your undergraduate degree, does the certificate program offer the basics of legal research, analysis, writing, substantive law, technology and management?
    • What other obligations do you have, whether work or family, that will affect the demands on your life and what accommodations does the school have that will fit with your schedule? How long do you want to take to earn your certificate?
    • What are the professional credentials and experience of the faculty?
    • What resources does the school have in terms of research tools, classrooms, online accessibility and job placement programs?
    • How much do you want to spend?

With answers to these basic questions you are sure to find a school that can provide you with a quality education that meets your needs and helps you achieve your specific career goals.

Interview with teacher and author, Frank Adamo

    Q. Is there really a big job market for English-speaking teachers abroad?

F.A. English is the international language of science, medicine, information technology and business, and is fast becoming the international language in other fields as well. For example, according to a recent issue of Newsweek, all of the world’s top 10 universities are in the U.S. and Britain, and 30-40% of our doctoral students come from overseas. If foreign students want the best education to get the best jobs, they need to speak English. In some foreign cities, students need to pass an English exam to enter their own universities!

    Q. What about the job market for teachers in Italy right now (2015)?

F.A. Frustration with traditional Italian schools has led to the increasing popularity of international schools offering the entire curriculum in English. There are teacher jobs for English-speaking teachers in every subject, especially English as a second language (ESL). Americans, Canadians and Australians are working in Italy even though they aren’t citizens of the European Union, but there is stiff competition. The world financial crisis has led to many English speakers who never dreamed of teaching anything, let alone English, looking for teaching jobs abroad. Working in Italy nowadays is becoming an impossible dream, especially for casual job-seekers who naively hope to find employment without bothering to become well-informed.

    Q. Is TEFL or other certification necessary to teach abroad?

F.A. As in many other countries, the rate of successful foreign language learning in Italy is very low. Outdated teaching methods combined with a lack of student motivation translate into frequent failure in learning ESL. This situation has led to the rise of teacher training frauds. Web sites claiming to offer jobs abroad are merely selling TEFL or similar courses. You apply for what are actually fictitious teaching positions, and then you are told: Since you don’t have a TEFL certificate you’ll have to pay Ђ1,000 for our course. By the time you finish the course, the position you applied for is no longer available. The scammers are on the blogs posing as your good buddy, while steering you to buy courses, and they feed false info into the online encyclopedias. The scammers often pose as teachers who worked in Italy and offer superficial advice, with the inevitable plug to be sure you get qualified by buying a TEFL course.

    Q. What exactly is your claim to expertise in teaching in Italy?

F.A. I’ve been teaching ESL in northern and southern Italy for nearly 20 years, and I continually update the most detailed, comprehensive and authoritative employment guide available: Teach English in Italy, now in its second edition. Although a printed edition is available from Amazon and other booksellers, the printed book was already out-of-date by the time it reached the shelves. The most up-to-date information and jobs are only available in the eBook you can order from this web page.

    Q. What kind of information, specifically, does your book offer?

F.A. Step-by-step instructions to find jobs in every field of opportunity: university positions, state schools, commercial language centers, and freelance tutoring, PLUS practical help to do your job effectively. PLUS a list of genuine job openings with the employers’ contact information. The perfect gift for graduating students, recent grads, the unemployed, career changers.

    Q. How has the current financial crisis affected the job market for English-speaking teachers in Italy?

F.A. The reality is that there are more people looking for jobs as ESL teachers now, but most people make the mistake of simply searching for the latest job ads and then sending off their C.V. (rйsumй) as quickly as possible. They literally don’t know what they’re doing, and waste their time and energy for nothing. Even in booming Asian economies like China, an uninformed person is more likely to fall victim of a fraud than find decent employment.

    Q. Anything else we should know before investing our time and money in a new career?

F.A. The web is great because you can get some information quickly and easily, but don’t make the costly mistake of thinking you’ll find out everything you need to know by reading three or four pages on a few web sites, or casual conversation on blogs – the blind leading the blind. If you really want to be well-informed you still need to read a book, if not several. Our parents/caregivers play a crucial role in their child s programming and treatment. Transferring progress in a clinical setting to a functional real life setting is our goal. In order to make this occur, we have a variety of ways parents/caregivers can becomes involved and learn.

    Monthly Topic Specific Workshops

On a monthly basis one of our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) holds a topic based 1-2 hour workshop at our center in Salida. These 1-2 hour workshops are held in the evening and childcare is provided by trained behavioral therapists. Parents/caregivers and families of clients receiving any of our comprehensive services are welcome to attend for free. Topics vary form month to month and some more popular topics are repeated more than once a year as requested. Preparation for these presentations always involves a review of current research and is founded in basic applied behavioral principles. The information is however presented to parents and caregivers in a very user-friendly format with the use of limited professional terminology that might overwhelm parents and caregivers. Positive behavioral strategies that are developmentally appropriate are presented.

    • Increasing Cooperation
    • Increasing Food Selection
    • Toilet Training
    • Understanding Autism
    • Coping with Holiday Stress
    • Incorporating Learning into Play
    • Routines and Schedules
    • Maladaptive Behaviors
    • Improving Communication
    • Improving Social/Interaction Skills

Our Hands on Behavioral Parent Training Workshop is an eight-hour course also offered monthly, that demonstrates basic behavior analytic strategies and how to apply those strategies at home and in the community. This class is user-friendly and a variety of real life examples across behaviors and ages are shown through videos and vignettes. Parents/caregivers actively participate as the instructor continually presents ASR s (Active Student Responding activities) where parents are asked to problem solve and demonstrate their understanding of the information throughout the class.

It is crucial that parents participate on some level in treatment so that skills can generalize and maintain over time. Typically the parent/caregiver is briefed weekly and is asked on a weekly basis to participate in what we refers to as Phase 3 where we begin to generalize the current skills being taught. Target skills are generalized systematically so that the child can utilize the skill regardless of the how it is presented (Phase 2) or the environment, or who presents it (Phase 3). Parents/caregivers play a key role in assisting therapists transfer skills in the final phase of skill acquisition (Phase 3).

[Our child] is able to listen and work on tasks for 25 minutes or more. His eye contact is 100% better. He is able to understand English and Spanish. He has also started talking. He responds to his name, and has better behavior throughout the day.

    SPHR-PHR Self Study Course #sphr #certification #preparation #course

    SPHR-PHR Self Study Course

The HR certification exams are tough. They re not unbeatable, but they are definitely nothing to sneer at. Any exam with a nearly 50% fail rate is going to require some major preparation, right?

So you buy an $800 set of books and CDs and hope that you can focus enough time out of your busy life to absorb the material and pass the exam.

Time and time again I ve seen that scenario play out with a negative ending. Some poor HR professional thinks that she can just pay the money, get the study materials, and pass the exam.

However, she is missing a key piece of the puzzle. It s called motivation. It s called accountability. After all, we re only human, right? And with work, family, and social responsibilities clamoring for our time, you better believe that your studies will go on the back burner in the event of a conflict.

    What if

What if there was some way to keep you on track with your studies without having to join a local study group and conform to their schedule?

Wouldn t it be nice to have automatic updates a few times a week with study tips, areas to focus on, and ideas for incorporating what you learn into your day job. What if there was a tool that did all that, plus offered access to practice exams, unlimited email support, and a time-tested study guide for passing the HR certification exams?

I have good news for you, because you have found that tool. Click here to buy the self study course .

    • The course is 12 weeks (lessons) long

    What others are saying

Thank you! You definitely hit the nail on the head with this, as I ve been really dragging my feet studying for this. Thanks again for creating this!

I attempted the PHR in June and came up short by 20 points. Heartbreaker. I was reluctantly planning my study strategy when I received the info on your study guide. It has been most helpful.

I want to thank you so much for going out of your way in helping me prepare for my PHR. It is so very much appreciated.

ISO 9001: 2015 and the telecoms industry – the easy and

Telecoms.com periodically invites expert third parties to share their views on the industry’s most pressing issues. In this piece Sheronda Jeffries explores the nuances and implications of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

TL 9000 is a two-part quality management system standard aimed at meeting the supply chain requirements of the global information and communication technology (ICT) or telecom industry. TL 9000:2016 (Release 6) is scheduled to be the first sector standard released based on ISO 9001:2015 allowing TL 9000 Certified companies more transition time than other industries like aerospace or automotive.

The standard consists of the TL 9000 Requirements Handbook, which contains all of the auditable requirements of ISO 9001 and additional requirements specific to the ICT sector such as:

    • Service Availability (24/7)
    • Program, product, project, and service planning
    • Continuity of supply
    • Maintenance, including long-term & end of life
    • Product security
    • Disaster recovery

The TL 9000:2016 (Release 6) Requirements Handbook is slated for publication in Q2/Q3 2016 with an effective date of September 2016 and for the first time, instead of the customary one year transition, TL 9000 certified organizations will be allowed two years to transition their existing certifications to the new release of the Handbook. This will allow alignment with ISO 9001:2015’s three year transition as agreed by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), the organization that provides oversight to Certification Bodies and Accreditation Bodies that grant TL 9000 certification.

How can ICT or telecom organizations best manage the ISO 9001:2015 and TL 9000:2016 (R6) transition? Let’s look at two buckets: easy versus hard.

The ‘easy bucket’ includes the concept of risk-based-thinking, which has been a major subject of concern and conversation for ISO 9001:2015 along with the introduction of “context.”

ISO 9001:2015 does not introduce the term “risk management” or terms like “risk mitigation” or “risk treatment.” Instead ISO 9001:2015 introduces the term “risk-based thinking” and clearly states that the concept of “risk-based thinking” was implicit in previous versions. The ISO 9001 standard now promotes a systematic approach to considering “risk” rather than treating the concept of preventing “risk” as a separate clause. Although many believe that “risk” applies only to negative consequences, the effects of “risk” can be either negative or positive.

Most telecom organizations have long utilized “red-yellow-green” indicators on dashboards and performance reports. In the past, yellow was an indicator for the need for caution or quite simply it was an indicator that there may be a need to take action to prevent potential nonconformities as in “preventive action.” The adoption of the concept of “risk-based thinking” is in line with “red-yellow-green” indicators that are used throughout the telecom industry and quite frankly other industries as well. This is a very basic application of risk-based thinking that is widely used and effective.

Many telecom organizations maintain certification or compliance with multiple management system standards. For example, Cisco Systems maintains ISO 9001, TL 9000, ISO 14001 and ISO 27001 Certifications. So the inclusion of core text from Annex SL will make things a lot simpler. In the telecom world, many organizations rely on tools and spreadsheets and the “high-level structure” (i.e. clause sequence, common text and terminology) will simplify the numbering and the text fields within the tools and spreadsheets.

The TL 9000 standard includes a focus on performance data that really fits well with the introduction of organizational “context” in ISO 9001:2015 – understanding the relevant needs and expectations of relevant interested parties. TL 9000 has long included additional requirements or “adders” for “Customer Communication,” “Customer Input” and “Supplier Input.” Additionally submission of monthly performance data allows TL 9000 Certified organizations to analyze their performance against their TL 9000 Certified competitors to evaluate whether their TL 9000 measurements performance meets “industry average” or is “best-in-class” or even “worst-in-class” for their products.

So transition to ISO 9001:2015 and TL 9000:2016 (Release 6) shouldn’t be that difficult – but what about the hard bucket?

One clause of ISO 9001:2015 contains the words “when addressing changing needs and trends.” For ICT or telecom, change is a way of life – markets and products are rapidly changing. With this in mind, telecom organizations may have some difficulty maintaining “organizational knowledge” when “addressing changing needs and trends” as change is almost constant in the industry.

Another consideration is that due to the rush to transition or re-certify by the IAF deadline, Certification Bodies will be backlogged and it may be difficult for telecom organizations to schedule their transition audits. Quite frankly, there are not a lot of Certification Body auditors qualified to conduct TL 9000 audits.

Other changes will impact TL 9000 Certified organizations as they transition. For example, the “Code of Practice for TL 9000 Certification Bodies” was revised to include a requirement that an installation or construction site be audited for initial certification at least once during each three-year certification cycle for specified organizations and a companion Code of Practice Checklist Guideline was created for Certification Bodies. An optional TL 9000 Measurements Checklist was revised and enhanced and a post-Audit Feedback Survey to gather anonymous input from auditors, auditees, and observers about their Certification Body audit experiences was recently implemented. Many of these changes were made as a result of the Validation Audits conducted by QuEST Forum.

The Validation Audits were undertaken by QuEST Forum to gather data to assess the effectiveness of the TL 9000 Certification process by confirming there are no major nonconformities in the requirements to be included in every audit, according to the “Code of Practice for TL 9000 Certification Bodies.” Organizations evaluated were chosen at random, while ensuring a representative regional distribution. Based upon the results, QuEST Forum continues working towards improvements in the TL 9000 Certification process.

The publication of the TL 9000:2016 (Release 6) Requirements Handbook continues QuEST Forum’s dedication to positively impacting the quality and sustainability of products and services in the ICT industry. QuEST Forum will continue to examine and address key ICT issues affecting reliability, performance, and security in future releases of its TL 9000 standard and associated TL 9000 measurements.

Hopefully, this focus will allow TL 9000 Certified organizations to have a lighter bucket load during future ISO 9000 transitions. For more information on ISO 9001:2015, ASQ Quality Management Standards .

Sheronda Jeffries is the Integrated Global Quality Chair for QuEST Forum, an industry collaboration of companies dedicated to ICT or telecom supply chain quality and performance, at the USTAG TC 176, ISO TC 176, ISO CASCO STAR and the IAF, where she serves as a Director representing Users and Industry.

Sheronda is responsible for providing internal consulting support at Cisco Systems and has more than 20 years experience serving as a third-party quality auditor and a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, specializing in quality management systems implementation and auditing. Her experience spans many industries, including ICT and telecom, plus the following types of manufacturing: electrical, mechanical, paper and plastic.

    Paralegal certification florida #paralegal #certification #florida

The Paralegal program at Palm Beach State College can be your entry to a fascinating career where opportunities are plentiful. Educated and well-trained legal assistants are in demand at law firms, corporations, banks, real estate agencies, insurance companies and governmental agencies. As a paralegal you will help attorneys deliver a variety of legal services including:

    • Conducting legal research
    • Locating and interviewing witnesses
    • Gathering evidence
    • Preparing legal documents
    • Assisting the attorney during the litigation process

The paralegal career and job designation is expected to continue its rapid employment with typically the best opportunities going to those with experience and formally trained paralegals. According to the United States Department of Labor, employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 8 percent between 2014 and 2024, as fast as average for all occupations.

Salaries for persons employed in the paralegal field vary by many factors such as region, experience, and size of firm. The NALA 2015 National Utilization and Compensation Survey Report indicates the average salary across the country is $55,188 plus about $4,581 in bonuses.

Palm Beach State has a comprehensive Law Library located on the Eissey campus in Palm Beach Gardens. The resources of this library include an extensive collection of state and federal materials along with the electronic research services of Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw to assure students have the needed resources for research in many of the classes. The primary use of these resources occurs when students take Legal Research and Writing I and II as required courses.

    Business Partnership Council

The program has an active advisory council that is composed of local attorneys, law office managers, program graduates, representatives of local paralegal organizations and current students. This council provides valuable input and direction to the program as it continues to evolve and meet the needs of the students and the legal community.

    History of the Program

Palm Beach State College, formerly known as Palm Beach Community College and Palm Beach Junior College first offered classes in “legal assisting” in 1977. Apparently, the Palm Beach County Bar Association saw a need for this degree and approached PBJC administration regarding the development of a legal assisting Associate of Science degree. At that time, the courses were all taught by local attorneys who served as adjunct faculty. In 1982, the first full-time faculty member was employed at the Lake Worth campus to teach business law. Shortly thereafter, this professor transferred to the recently opened North campus on PGA Boulevard (now the Eissey campus). Thereafter, the legal assisting program was officially located at this campus with some classes offered at the Lake Worth location, as well.

In 1987, another full-time faculty member was hired at the Eissey campus and a day-time component was added. Then in 1989, one more full-time faculty was employed at the Lake Worth location to teach Business Law and selected subjects in the legal assisting program which has permitted the program to offer courses at both the Palm Beach Gardens and the Lake Worth location. At the present time, there are two full-time professors associated with the program.

In addition to the full-time faculty, the college has continually relied upon local actively practicing attorneys and judges to serve as adjunct professors. One of these adjuncts has served from the beginning of the program without a break in teaching and a good number of adjuncts have been returning from year-to-year which creates stability in the teaching and the program.

    Community Involvement of Program Faculty
In addition to responsibility for teaching, the paralegal faculty have taken on visible roles in volunteering for the Certified Legal Assisting (CLA) exam review courses. The CLA designation is a registered trademark of The National Association of Legal Assistants for persons who have met the requirements of this organization’s voluntary certification program which includes educational and character requirements as well as demonstration of competency based on a two day intensive examination process. The largest number of CLAs are found in Florida which also has local and statewide associations (Palm Beach County Chapter) of persons who have chosen the paralegal (legal assisting) profession. Most of the graduates of the Palm Beach State program go on to attain the designation.

It is noted, however, that Palm Beach State has no formal affiliation with the National Association of Legal Assistants. Palm Beach State is, however, a member of the American Association for Paralegal Educators.

    Nature of the Profession
The designation of “legal assistant” recently went through an evolution which saw the title change to “paralegal.” These two terms have been used interchangeably from the beginning of the use of such para-professionals in the legal field. The actual roots of this career choice appear to be from the 1960’s when professional journals advocated the use of lay personnel in law firms and the creation of a sub-professional class comparable to medical technicians, according to T.E. Eimermann in the textbook Fundamentals of Paralegalism.

    Grads’ Employers’ Surveys

This survey has been created by Palm Beach State’s Institutional Effectiveness (IE) in Lake Worth.

We request your assistance in evaluating the Paralegal Program. An evaluation of the program by graduating students and their employers is required by the ABA in order to gain and sustain “Approval” status for the program.

Your responses are confidential; only summary results will be released by the IE office.

Graduates are kindly asked to take just a few minutes of their time and take the Palm Beach State Graduates survey. We appreciate your input and we are confident that your time will help us to maintain a quality program.
    Paralegal Graduate Survey

Attorneys, Firms and the like who employ Palm Beach State graduate paralegals are asked to take just a few minutes of their time and take the Employer survey. We know how busy your office is and only ask that this survey be taken once for multiple grads in an academic year (August – July). If you employ another Palm Beach State graduate within the academic year, we kindly ask for your valuable input once again by completing another Employer survey. Thank you for your time in partnershipping with us to provide a quality program.

Even though many of you are at the beginning of a new career as a certified nursing assistant, it is always wise to know what lies ahead and what educational responsibilities you will have to meet further down the road. Those who have completed CNA training programs in the state of Michigan and became certified nurse aides in the state of Michigan are required to complete twelve credits of continuing education each year. Most of these continuing education credits are offered through the employer, as in-service nurse aide training hours. The guidelines of acceptable in-service education are flexible as long as the training ensures the nurse aide meets acceptable standards of competence.

The main goal of continuing your nurse aide education is to address any areas which need improvement and further practice. In order to renew a nursing assistant certification in Michigan a CNA must show proof of eight hours of work conducted in the role of nursing assistant within the two years prior to certification renewal. How much does a nurse aide earn yearly in the state of Michigan? Full-time CNA jobs will yield an average salary of $23,000. An experienced nurse aide has the potential to earn $31,000 per year especially if she continues to work for the same health care facility over an extended period of time.

Message: I want to become a CNA and am looking for schools that have the program. Is there a school near or around Wayne County that has a program that does not require me to take extra classes that have nothing to do with becoming a CNA and that also provides the certification exam? Not that I’m trying to complain. I don’t want to go to a school that once you’re done they don’t inform you of the exam or what else there is for you to do in order to help one out.

Message: You can start your search here: CNA programs in Wayne County, MI. You have to contact the schools and ask if they also administer the CNA test although you may find that this is actually rare. I think that once you contact them they will provide all the answers you need. In fact I don’t think there are many schools which require you to take more than the minimum required number of training hours for your state. So please don’t hesitate to call them and ask about the exam, certification, etc. After all you are the one paying and they will most likely want to have you as a student.

How long do CNA classes take and what exactly do you have to do?

Admin on July 19, 2014 at 10:51 PM
Nursing assistant training courses may take anywhere between three weeks to three months to complete, depending on the facility or school which offers the program. To enroll in nurse aide classes you must meet certain admission criteria pertaining to education, health, and background history. Those who are accepted into CNA classes must complete both the classroom and hands-on practice sessions to graduate. Finally, one must pass a final exam which tests a candidate’s skills and abilities to practice correctly and safely. When you pass this final test you become a certified nurse aide.

    CNA Resources

    CNA Training Requirements

There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.

    About ECFMG Certification

ECFMG was founded in 1956 to assess, through a program of certification, whether international medical graduates (IMGs) are ready to enter residency or fellowship programs in the United States that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME ). ACGME requires IMGs who enter ACGME-accredited programs to be certified by ECFMG. ECFMG Certification is also one of the eligibility requirements for IMGs to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE ). Medical licensing authorities in the United States require that IMGs be certified by ECFMG, among other requirements, to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine.

The foundation of ECFMG s certification program has endured remarkably over the last five decades. Throughout the history of the program, the requirements have included examinations in the medical sciences, evaluation of English language proficiency, and documentation of medical education credentials. Over the years, there have been changes in the examinations accepted to meet the requirements for ECFMG Certification and changes to the requirements themselves. These changes have been made to enhance the certification program, respond to the needs of the U.S. graduate medical education community, comply with the changing immigration landscape, take advantage of new technologies, and achieve a common examination pathway to medical licensure for IMGs and U.S. medical graduates.

ECFMG Certification is an effective screening mechanism for ensuring that IMGs in patient care situations have met minimum standards. Each year, thousands of IMGs in the certification process apply to ECFMG for USMLE. Just over half of these individuals are successful in completing all the examination and medical education credential requirements for ECFMG Certification. During the 20-year period from 1991 through 2010, more than 295,000 international medical students/graduates applied to take their first examination with ECFMG; of this number, 60.7% have achieved certification.

Most master’s degree programs include a thesis or field experience requirement, and doctoral degree programs focus on research, oftentimes requiring a dissertation.

Additionally, those who work as nursing care administrators and some assisted living administrators must pass a state licensing exam to be eligible for employment. General areas of health care management do not require licensure. For those required to maintain certification or licensure, continuing education courses must typically be completed at an accredited school, college or training organization.
