How to Become a Certified Coding Specialist

Should I Become a Certified Coding Specialist?

A certified coding specialist. also referred to as a medical coder or health information technician, is a medical professional responsible for overseeing patient records and ensuring bills are paid properly and on time. These medical professionals work as intermediaries who are in contact with the insurance company, billing office and health clinic. They work at hospitals, physicians’ offices, government organizations and nursing care facilities. They spend long periods sitting at desks, on computers. Most coding specialists work full-time and need to serve overnight and weekend shifts.

Steps to Be a Coding Specialist

What do I need to do to be a certified coding specialist?

Step 1: Pursue a Postsecondary Education in Medical Billing and Coding

Many coding positions seek individuals with an associate’s degree in medical billing and coding. Courses provide knowledge in medical terminology, reimbursement methods, pathophysiology and commonly used coding systems, including CPT and ICD-9. Students are also taught the details of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well.

Step 2: Gain Work Experience

While work experience is not a requirement to become certified, obtaining 2-3 years of work experience is also highly recommended. Hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and insurance companies are common work environments for medical coders. Individuals enrolled in a degree program also have the opportunity to enroll in an internship to gain hands-on training and some recommended work experience.

Step 3: Pursue Certification

The AHIMA oversees the certification exam for aspiring coding specialists. It offers several certification designations, including the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and the Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P). The CCS is geared towards hospital-based coding professionals. Both tests consist of two parts, including multiple-choice questions and patient-case scenarios for medical coding. Both the CCS and the CCS-P exams test on ICD-9 and CPT coding systems. The CCS-P also includes testing on the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).

Step 4: Take Continuing Education Courses and Renew Certification

The BLS reported that health information technicians (which include certified coding technicians) need to regularly renew their certification and take continuing education classes. The AHIMA offers seminars, conferences and webinars that provide beneficial experiences for certified coding specialists and meet these requirements. CCSs and CCS-Ps must complete at least 30 continuing education units (CEUs) like these every certification cycle, as well as pay a renewal fee. CEUs are completed through college courses.

Step 5: Consider Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree

Coding specialists looking to pursue promotional opportunities may need a bachelor’s degree in health administration or a related field, so coding specialists should keep that option open to them if they wish to advance.

Certified coding specialists have associate’s degrees and certification. They use medical software programs while overseeing and updating patient records, and they earn a median annual salary of $37,110.

Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse, Nursing, certified registered nurse anesthetist schools.#Certified #registered

    Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse

What Does a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Do?

Cardiac catheterization, or heart cath, is the insertion of a catheter into a heart chamber or vessel. Catherization can be used as a diagnostic tool to investigate possible cardiac conditions or used as a form of treatment. A specialized subset of cardiac catheterization is coronary catheterization, which involves catheterizing coronary arteries. From angioplasties, valvuloplasties, to stent placements, catheterization procedures take place in state of the art labs. During a catheterization procedure, the catheter, or thin, flexible tube, is inserted into a vein in the patient s leg or arm then moved into the arteries or heart. Cardiac cath lab nurses can also assist physicians in implanting pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibillators (ICDs). They must be good with technology and able to learn quickly. The majority of cardiac cath lab nurses work in hospitals and clinics, generally stationed in intensive care units and cardiovascular catheterization labs if they re available.

How Can I Become a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse?

Cardiac cath lab nurses are registered nurses with a certification or advanced level experience in this discipline. Obviously cardiac cath lab nurses should also possess a high level of understanding and training in cardiac anatomy and physiology. Upon receiving a degree and license as a registered nurse and working for a specific period of time, those interested can participate in a hospital run cardiac cath lab training program if they re available, then apply for a voluntary certification exam. The training program consists of classroom study as well as several hundred hours of supervised nursing experience in an actual cath lab. During this training the nurse will learn the differences between cardiac conditions and how to treat them. The length of these programs may vary by hospital or state, but generally can last up to six months. Be sure to only participate in certification exams that are approved of by your hospital, state or national certification board. Should a hospital led training program not be available, many registered nurses spend one to two years in the emergency room, intensive care unit or coronary care unit before they enter the cardiac cath lab.

What Is the Career and Salary Outlook for a Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse?

With heart disease on the rise in the United States, many more patients suffering from cardiac conditions are entering the health care system in need of specialized care. This fact coupled with the national nursing shortage leaves the future employment outlook very positive for cardiac cath lab nurses. According the National Center for Disease Control, nearly 1.5 million heart attacks occur in this country alone each year and more than 8 million Americans suffer from heart disease. According to one source, average annual salaries for cardiac cath lab nurses vary by geographic location and the nurse s experience, but can range from $41,000-$63,500 per year. Also, cardiac cath lab nurses have the advantage of cross training with other departments which increases their expertise and marketability to potential employers. Obviously, the more knowledgeable a medical professional is about more medical disciplines, the more likely they will to receive a higher salary.

    Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program #certified #substance #abuse #counselor #nc

    Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program

The Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program is designed to help individuals acquire the skills and certification necessary to counsel those who suffer from the effects of substance abuse.
University of the Pacific’s Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program gives you the knowledge and experience to become certified in substance abuse counseling. Our program meets the educational and training requirements established according to regulations from the State of California Department of Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Programs. It was developed by the Center for Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) in conjunction with professionals and experts in the field of substance abuse.

    Scope of Training
The University of the Pacific’s Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program is designed to provide participants with the skills necessary to counsel clients in the recovery process. Topics and skills include assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, and community resources. Special issues are addressed including sexual harassment, gender, aging, disabilities, cultural differences, and co-occurring disorders.

Curriculum and training stress a full continuum of treatment, focusing on issues involving the individual, the family, the community and the environment; relapse prevention; short and long-term effects of substance abuse; and techniques for improving the client’s quality of life. The program consists of 16 total units of instruction taken sequentially in either the classroom or online format. Each course is 45 hours of instruction and two extended education units of elective credit (eight of these units may be applicable towards an undergraduate degree at Pacific).

Classroom courses meet on weeknights. Online courses will be 6 weeks, occasionally requiring synchronous interaction. For both programs, students take 2 classes at a time.

In addition to the coursework, students are required to complete 300 hours (255 site, 45 classroom) of supervised internship in order to receive our certificate. Previous internship or experience cannot be counted toward these 300 hours. We recommend you complete the program within six months but it must be completed within three years. If requirements and/or courses have changed during an absence in your attendance, repeating of some classes may be required.

Students are required to begin the program with XSAP 160 Introduction to Addiction Counseling. Accumulated internship hours may not be done until after the classroom portion is completed and a passing grade is earned in XSAP 167.

    Online Option
CPCE also offers our Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program online! Through the use of Canvas, students can now get the education they want without leaving their home. Online courses run for 6 weeks, opening on Mondays and closing on Sundays. Two classes are offered at a time. Students will not be entered in the class until payment has been received. We suggest you register at least 3 days prior to the start date so there will be no delay in class entry or late fee accessed. All coursework can be taken online at this time. Internships can be accepted in your local area with approval from the Program Director.

University of the Pacific is an approved school through CCAPP – California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals. All education content used for CCAPP certification is reviewed autonomously by the CCAPP Education Institute, which is the education board for CCAPP Credentialing. Upon completion of our Substance Abuse Program you will have satisfied the education and experience requirements to meet CCAPP’s Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor I (CADC-I).

    Choose your accelerated Firebrand course #vmware #certified #advanced #professional

Choose your accelerated Firebrand course here

Why every course you have ever done was a waste of time

From an early age we are all conditioned to believe that the teaching methods used at school (“traditional teaching”) is the only way for us to learn.

However humans are capable of both absorbing and retaining much more information than we give ourselves credit for.

Accelerated Learning. Learn more, effectively, efficiently

Firebrand Training uses accelerated learning methods to deliver vast amounts of information in the shortest possible time. Accelerated learning is very different from traditional teaching.

With accelerated teaching students are involved in the learning process and the delivery method constantly varies ensuring that all of the fundamental learning styles we use are addressed, namely:

    • Visual (lecture sessions with white boarding and discussion)
    • Tactile (hands-on lab sessions)
    • Auditory (review sessions)

Firebrand Training builds students skills by creating an innovative, high-quality learning environment with no distractions geared toward the success of its students.

This success means not only certification, but a solid education that enables the individual’s creative application of their skills.

We train you, you don’t train yourself

We do not require students to self study masses of information, we do guarantee you will get trained and certified with us in the shortest possible time.

Firebrand Training is unlike any other “boot camp” – we emphasize instructor-led skill-building, not just beating the tests.

    Ask yourself these questions

    • “Can I wait 12 months to learn the skills I need in my job today?”
    • “Have I got the 100’s of hours of personal time available for self study prior to a course?”
    • “Can I or my employer afford for me to take many weeks off of work to complete my education?”

If you answer no to any of these questions then we are your only option.

Call us now to discuss how we achieve what many feel is impossible.

    Welcome to Open Campus! #mcse, #mct, #mcp, #microsoft #certified, #systems #engineer,

    Our Mission.

The mission of RCCD Distance Education (formerly Open Campus) is to extend access to learning through distance education. Objectives: To facilitate learning at a distance, Distance Education provides:

    • Educational technology to the colleges, faculty, and students to support the delivery of online-based courses and services
    • Professional development and training for faculty
    • Expertise and experience
    • Blackboard management, production and problem solving.

As of April 21, the Open Campus department has changed its name to Distance Education. We thank you for your patience as we work to complete the changes to website by the middle of summer.

What Are Online Based or Distance Education classes?

Online-based courses, also called Distance Education classes, may take two different forms:

Online classes are taken exclusively over the Internet. Please note that, while some online courses provide all instructional content over the Internet, others may require some on-campus meetings. Please see the course schedule or WebAdvisor for more information.

Hybrid classes meet both on campus and online. Think of them as a combination or blending of online classes and face-to-face classes.

In a hybrid class, you will attend meetings on campus during the dates and times listed in the schedule of classes. Since the on-campus portion of hybrid classes could take place at any of our three colleges (Riverside City, Norco or Moreno Valley), hybrid classes are listed in the schedule by the college where the on-campus meetings will take place.

Are there Face-to-Face classes that use the Internet?

Web-Enhanced classes are traditional face-to-face classes that are supplemented with course websites and the use of Internet resources. Unlike hybrid or fully-online classes, all web-enhanced class meetings take place on campus.

    Where Do I Start?

For more information about Blackboard and support, visit
    Students page

    Certified nursing assistant online courses #certified #nursing #assistant #online #courses

Learn About Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA)

    The Basics

What you ll do: Working closely with patients, you are responsible for basic care services such as bathing, grooming and feeding patients, assisting nurses with medical equipment, and checking patient vital signs. CNAs give patients important social and emotional support and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses.

Where you ll work: Hospitals, nursing care facilities, community care facilities for the elderly

Degree you ll need: High school diploma or GED and completion of a 6-to-12 week CNA certificate program

    Median annual salary: $25,090*

    Who Are Certified Nursing Assistants?

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) job puts you on the front lines of patient care. Nursing assistants are vital to daily operations in hospitals and nursing care facilities. Your compassion and skill in patient care will help minimize the stress of those who are sick or unable to care for themselves.

Certified nursing assistants, sometimes called nurses aides, orderlies, patient care technicians, and home health aides, work under the supervision of a nurse to help patients with daily living tasks.

    Role of a CNA

The role of a CNA is to assist patients with everyday tasks such as eating, bathing and dressing. Many CNAs develop close bonds with their patients because they spend a significant amount of time together.

As a CNA, you ll rarely have two days that are completely alike. Your responsibilities will depend on the time of your shift and the type of facility you work in. For example, if you work a night shift in a hospital, you ll get an update from the day shift RN when you arrive at work. You ll take vital signs and ensure patients have what they need for the night. Your nights won t necessarily be quiet, however. You ll answer call lights, empty catheters, help patients who may be going in for surgery and provide general support to patients who are upset or uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, the role of CNA during a day shift will include preparing patients for the day ahead; washing, dressing and feeding breakfast will be some of the first tasks of the morning. As a CNA, you ll need to be organized and efficient since you ll often be managing multiple patients at once. For instance, as breakfast is going on, you may be called to change bedsheets.

CNAs not only offer support to their patients, but they help RNs as well. You ll maintain charts and provide reports to the incoming shift. Nurses may also ask you to round up certain medical supplies, admit new patients or prepare a room.

CNAs perform many of the same tasks in a nursing home, but there are a few differences. In a hospital, patients will have meals brought to them whereas nursing home patients may need assistance to the dining room. You ll answer call lights throughout the day or night and help patients get comfortable in their room or move about the facility. Depending on the nursing home, you may be assigned to a certain hall or area.

    Similar Health Care Roles

Not all states use certified nursing assistant as a job title. Depending on your location, you may be called nursing assistant or nursing aide.

CNA roles are entry-level and while some of their tasks are similar to those of medical assistants or orderlies, you ll have more responsibility in this job. CNAs provide medical treatment to patients whereas orderlies are not permitted to do so. Instead, they clean equipment and rooms and transport patients. A medical assistant, like a CNA, has more interaction with patients, such as taking vital signs. However, their role includes more clerical and administrative work, such as booking appointments and collecting a patient s personal information.

According to ONET. here s what you can expect as a CNA in the workplace.

    • 85% of CNAs said they had face-to-face discussions every day.
    • 71% of CNAs said they were in very close physical proximity to patients.
    • 51% of CNAs said they spend time walking or running continually or almost continually.

Because of the regular interaction with patients and other medical staff, CNAs need to be dependable, cooperative and able to cope with stressful situations on a regular basis.

    CNA Pay and Benefits

CNA pay and benefits will depend on where you work, but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2016-17 Occupational Outlook Handbook lists the annual median salary for CNAs as $25,090.

It s important to note that many CNAs are paid on an hourly basis so you may have an opportunity to pick up more hours to fill in for other CNAs who are using sick or vacation time.

Your geographic location is also a factor in how much you can make as a certified nursing assistant. Some larger cities pay more than their smaller and less expensive counterparts.

Although CNA pay and benefits may not be robust, there are plenty of benefits to becoming a certified nursing assistant. Not only will you get the fulfillment of knowing you re helping others feel better, but it can also be a solid stepping stone in your nursing career. If you decide to head back to school to become an RN, some programs will give you credit for CNA work experience.

How Do I Become a CNA?

If you re striving to become a CNA, there s good news. The BLS predicts faster than average job growth through 2024. Specifically, employment is supposed to increase by 17 percent. The national average is 7 percent.

To become a CNA, you ll need a high school diploma or GED, plus nursing assistant training. You can find these programs at community colleges, trade schools and medical facilities. Before enrolling, be sure the program is approved by your state s nursing board.

Once you ve completed your coursework, you ll need to take a state exam. You ll be tested on your basic nursing knowledge and skills. Aspiring CNAs will be expected to correctly answer questions about daily living activities, patient/client rights, communication, legal and ethical behavior and working as a health care team member, among other topics.

If you re concerned about the content of a CNA exam, you can find study preparation materials online. Here are a few sample questions:

    • How should a nursing assistant obtain the most accurate weight of a patient?
    • Who can you share a patient s personal information with?
    • What are the best ways to show a patient you are listening?

    Education Certification

You can complete your certified nursing assistant program in a very short period of time. In addition to a high school diploma or GED, you ll need to complete a 6-to-12 week CNA certificate program at a community college or medical facility.

Classroom instruction in a certified nursing assistant program generally includes the following:

    • Basic nursing skills
    • Anatomy and physiology
    • Nutrition
    • Infection control

Students also gain plenty of hands-on-experience during clinical activities.

Regulations on nursing assistant certification vary from state-to-state. However, most CNA programs offer a certification exam. The National Association for Home Care offers national certification for home health aides.

It s not uncommon for CNAs to advance their career by going back to school. If you want to become a registered nurse, you can earn an associate s or bachelor s degree. The former takes about two years to complete, but there are CNA-to-RN bridge programs available. This allows nursing students to complete their schooling in less than two years. Just keep in mind that an RN, BSN tends to open more doors for an advancement and opportunity in a nursing career.

    CNA Licensure

To earn CNA licensure, you ll need to pass a state-issued competency exam. You ll complete a multiple choice portion of the test and in most cases, you ll need to demonstrate certain skills in a clinical setting.

In order to keep your CNA licensure active, most states require that CNAs complete 48 hours of continuing education every two years. Your state board can provide you with the most up-to-date information on licensing requirements.

When your license is up for renewal, check with your employer about continuing education subsidization. Many places will cover the cost of classes for their employees.

    Start Your CNA Career

What is a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)?

Also known as NA or Nursing Assistant, State Tested Nurse Aid (STNA) or Patient Care Assistant (PCA), CNAs, as the name suggests, are health care professionals that provide assistance to nurses in hospitals, medical centers, hospices, adult day care centers, personal assisted living facilities, nursing homes and community care facilities for the elderly. They work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs).

    What Does a CNA Do?

The job of a CNA is known for its versatility. Depending in which facility they work, their responsibilities can be quite varied. However, the most common task they do is to provide basic health care to patients such as administering basic bedside care and upholding proper hygiene all the time. They give basic health care services like:

    • Feeding – This task is included in the basic bedside care.
    • Personal hygiene – This includes basic grooming like bathing and maintaining cleanliness.
    • Repositioning and movement – CNAs help bedridden patients to move to promote proper blood circulation and prevent bend sores.
    • Administering prescribed medication – This is always done under the supervision of a doctor or an RN.
    • Taking Vital Signs – CNAs are sometimes assigned to take patients’ temperatures, blood pressures, respiration counts and pulses.

    How to Become a Counselor in NJ #certified #drug #and #alcohol

Becoming a Counselor in New Jersey

It takes a lot of education to be a counselor. Professional counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and school counselors are all credentialed at the master’s level. Substance abuse counselors are credentialed at different levels, but the highest level requires a master’s.

CACREP Accredited Online Master’s in Counseling Programs :

Northwestern’s Top-12 Ranked CACREP Accredited Online M.A. in Counseling program offers both full and part time options that allow you to earn a degree on your own schedule. GRE scores are not required for this program. Request information.

Capella University offers three online CACREP – accredited Master’s programs. Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy and School Counseling. Click here to contact Capella University and request information about their programs.

If you are a High School Student or have a Diploma/GED in NJ:

    Step 1:

Look ahead to see graduate school admission requirements. You can enter a counseling program with a degree in one of any number of fields, but some programs do have prerequisites. You may need a minimum number of courses in psychology or the social sciences, for example. [Read up on selecting an undergraduate counseling degree here .]

A bachelor’s degree in Psychology is common preparation for graduate school in the field of counseling.

    Step 2:

You can improve your grad school prospects by getting some experience out in the field. There are lots of options. You could volunteer with the Mental Health Association of Morris County and socialize with adults with mental illness; you could become a Reading Buddy through Family & Children’s Service. You will find more opportunities on the site of Volunteer New Jersey.

If you have a Bachelor’s Degree:

    Step 1:

To become a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, you will need a master’s degree in either counseling or another related field. Your program must include 18 hours in counseling with coursework in specific areas identified by the Board.

To earn a professional counselor license, enroll in a master’s program that includes 60 semester hours of coursework. Your professional program may include several electives. It is possible to enroll in a program that simultaneously prepares you for LPC and LCADC or school counseling licensing.

New Jersey also recognizes gerontology, mental health counseling, and career counseling; these are specialty designations that may be added to your LPC license. You will want to make sure that your program meets standards set by the appropriate certification board.

Some licenses require less than 60 semester hours. If you are interested in becoming a school counselor, you’ll enroll in a program that is department-approved, CACREP-accredited, and/or includes all required components. Expect the program to be 48 semester hours and include at least six semester hours of field experience.

If you are seeking rehabilitation counselor licensing only, enroll in a program that meets New Jersey’s coursework requirements and prepares you to take the certification exam administered by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification.

    Step 2:

Your field placement may offer further opportunities to tailor the program. You may count some of the time you spend doing university internships toward the experience requirement for professional counseling. Make sure that your internships meet the requirements set by any certification agency through which you are seeking credentialing.

    Step 3:

Licensed Associate Counselor is a step on the path to becoming an LPC. You will need to pass the National Counselor Examination to become an LAC. If you are applying for national certification in addition to New Jersey licensure, you may take the NCE as early as your final semester.

If you are training to become an addiction counselor, you will take written and oral examinations.

    Step 4:

Fulfill experience requirements, if applicable. Licensure as an LPC or rehabilitation counselor requires three years of supervised experience under guidelines set by the New Jersey Board. At least two years must occur post-degree. If you have an additional 30 graduate semester hours beyond those required for licensing, your requirement will be reduced. (The Board considers 1,500 hours to be a year.

A substance abuse counseling license requires 3,000 hours of supervised work experience (paid or volunteer).

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Mark Palumbo. I injured my back at work, had some disc issues with horrible pain to the point I could barely walk. When other doctors said I would not ever be able to work my very physical job again, Dr. Palumbo proved them wrong. I have been back to work for over a year now.”

“I broke my left humerus in September 2013, I saw Dr. Got and he operated on me in October, it was a smooth recovery for me with the great team he had. I was back to work and back in the gym in four months. I would recommend anyone who experiences any bone break to go see Dr. Got.”

Dr. Bliss is awesome. I’m so grateful to have a doctor who cares about me. He listens and is genuinely concerned about my injury. The facility is well kept and staff is wonderful. I’d recommend them in a heartbeat.”

Amazing doctors, physical therapists, and facilities. The doctors are all very well educated and their staff are friendly as well. They also do a very good job of matching their patients to the physical therapists both in specialty and personality.”

Is there a school near or around Wayne County that has a program that does not require me to take extra classes that have nothing to do with becoming a CNA and that also provides the certification exam? Not that I’m trying to complain. I don’t want to go to a school that once you’re done they don’t inform you of the exam or what else there is for you to do in order to help one out.

Message: You can start your search here: CNA programs in Wayne County, MI. You have to contact the schools and ask if they also administer the CNA test although you may find that this is actually rare. I think that once you contact them they will provide all the answers you need. In fact I don’t think there are many schools which require you to take more than the minimum required number of training hours for your state. So please don’t hesitate to call them and ask about the exam, certification, etc. After all you are the one paying and they will most likely want to have you as a student.

How long do CNA classes take and what exactly do you have to do?

Admin on July 19, 2014 at 10:51 PM
Nursing assistant training courses may take anywhere between three weeks to three months to complete, depending on the facility or school which offers the program. To enroll in nurse aide classes you must meet certain admission criteria pertaining to education, health, and background history. Those who are accepted into CNA classes must complete both the classroom and hands-on practice sessions to graduate. Finally, one must pass a final exam which tests a candidate’s skills and abilities to practice correctly and safely. When you pass this final test you become a certified nurse aide.

    CNA Resources

    CNA Training Requirements

There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.

Hospice offers medical care toward a different goal: Maintaining or improving the quality of life for someone whose illness, disease or condition is unlikely to be cured. Each patient’s individualized care plan is updated as needed to address the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies terminal illness. Hospice care also offers practical support for the caregiver(s) during the illness and grief support after the death. Hospice is something more that is available to the patient and the entire family when curative measures have been exhausted and life prognosis is 6 months or less.

    History of Hospice

In Western society, the concept of hospice has been evolving in Europe since the 11th century. Hospice were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded or dying, as well as those for travelers and pilgrims. The modern concept of hospice, includes palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes. but also care provided to those who would rather spend their last months and days of life in their own homes.

It began to emerge in the 17th century, but many of the foundational principles by which modern hospice services operate were pioneered in the 1950s by Dame Cicely Saunders. when she opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in 1967. St. Christopher’s Hospice in London emphasized the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for the dying, the regular use of opioids to control physical pain and careful attention to social, spiritual and psychological suffering in patients and families.

Within the United States. the term is largely defined by the practices of the Medicare system and other health insurance providers, which make hospice care available, either in an inpatient facility or at the patient’s home, to patients with a terminal prognosis who are medically certified at hospice onset to have less than six months to live.

Hospice care also involves assistance for patients’ families to help them cope with what is happening and provide care and support to keep the patient at home.

In 1969, Elisabeth wrote On Death and Dying. coining the 5 stages of death: Shock/Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.
