Online Colleges in Nevada: The 5 Best Online Schools of 2017

Online Colleges in Nevada

Most Popular Rankings

In the 2015 Education Data Book, one of the more painful truths reported was that, among the state s working professionals over the age of 25, only 22.5% held bachelor s degrees; the lowest such percentage amongst states in the west. Yet, optimism remains, thanks in part to the state s robust selection of distance learning programs and courses. Take the state s E-Learning Task Force, an initiative of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE); this effort is using the state s online learning programs to achieve the common goal of graduating more students while supporting student success. More degrees means more qualified, working professional in Nevada, which in turn would be a boon to the economy. A number of the state s schools have taken up the charge, improving upon their already solid online options.

But before we dive into our list of the best online colleges in Nevada for 2017, let s start with the state of higher education and online education in particular in Nevada today.

A Brief Overview of Higher Education in Nevada

In 2013, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that Nevada had 27 degree-granting institutions, broken down as follows: 7 public schools, 3 nonprofits and 17 for-profits. The total number of bachelor s degrees awarded in the 12- 13 school year at these schools was: 6,975 at public schools, 302 at private nonprofits and 233 at private for-profits.

in 2013, Nevada had 27 degree-granting institutions

Tuition-wise, the College Board found that, in the 15- 16 school year, the average in-state tuition and fees for four-year public schools was $6,670, while the out-of-state average was $20,490, increasing by only 1% over the last last five years.

As for the state s financial aid efforts, the National Association of State Student Grant Aid Programs (NASSGAP) reported that Nevada awarded $10.39 million in need-based grants and $23.86 million in non-need grants for the 13- 14 school year. Grants make up 7% of the state s total fiscal support for higher education. Over the same year, Nevada awarded $17.9 million in tuition waivers. The Center on Budget and Policies Priorities reported that from 13 to 14 there was a 4.1% increase ($301) in state spending per student in Nevada.

Tuition at Nevada schools is competitive, with a particularly low in-state rate, and the state does an excellent job of supporting its students, with weight grants and an excellent tuition waiver program. To boot, the state government has managed stable growth in the amount of spending it allots for postsecondary students.

The State of Online Higher Education in Nevada

The NCES estimates that at least 9.8% of students enrolled in Nevada s Title IV institutions are in fully online programs. Of those, 92.3% were reported to be undergraduates and 89.5% were found to be living in Nevada.

As we mentioned in our introduction, the NSHE, representing the state s public schools, is a major proponent of online learning. Data-wise. NSHE has seen total enrollment in distance courses increasing by over 438% across an eight year period starting in 2001; results seem to indicate such steady growth will continue over the next few years. It s estimated that nearly one-third of all enrollments at NSHE schools are in distance learning courses.

Nevada is also part of the SARA regional education compact known as the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). The WICHE Internet Course Exchange (ICE) offers opportunities for state residents, through their local college or university, to access high quality distance programs offered at out-of-state WICHE institutions, often at greatly reduced rates.

Not every online University is incompetent; certainly, I know that Capella is very competent. It is also worth noting that an online university is not for everyone. For one thing, one has to be effective with using technology, secondly, one has to be time conscious and discipline, third, one has to be a fast learner. Read more.

College of Information and Communications

Posted May 23, 2017
Story and photos by Lauren Crank, reprinted from InterCom

When Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004, his target audience was the collegiate community; you needed a university email account to even create a pro le. Now, in part due to Zuckerberg’s innovations, social media is all around us. Every person you meet can send you toward their Instagram, brands are reaching directly to their consumers through platforms, and social media skills are a must for anyone working in business. What is the University of South Carolina doing to keep up with the ever-changing world of social media?

Internally, USC and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications are making strides to ensure that today’s graduates are prepared for a world in which “proficient in social media” is a job requirement. “We incorporate social media into many of our classes because it’s really a part of everything now, but we felt that we needed a class that focused on social media and strategy,” Dr. Andrea Tanner. SJMC director, said.

That class, “Social Media: Objectives, Strategies, and Tactics,” is taught by Ernie Grigg and Christopher Huebner. “Too many students tell me that their internship put them in charge of social media, and they had to learn the relevant skills on the fly. Students need proper preparation — grounded in strategic communication best practices — to help them succeed in the workplace,” said Grigg.

Although enrolling in the course could certainly give current students an advantage, the university’s entire curriculum ensures that social media is something that students know well. Additionally, student involvement is high on personal social media channels, most notably in the “big four” platforms most used by brands: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Her summer brain child, the “Millennial Slang” video featuring university professors trying to decode the most recent set of student phrases, such as “shade” and “bae,” won an American Advertising Award (ADDY) after it went viral across all platforms.

When the men’s basketball team beat Duke and advanced to the NCAA playoff ’s “Sweet 16,” UofSC’s tweets garnered 2,636,290 organic impressions within 24 hours, and were featured in the AP and People Magazine.

Lake believes it’s important for the university to be socially active. “It’s where our target audience is,” said Lake, “it’s where our new customers and prospective students spend a lot of time. Prospective students are more likely to trust a first-person point of view over an informational brochure.”

That target audience varies from platform to platform, but Lake’s goal is to appeal to prospective students with every post. “That means fewer press releases on our pages, fewer educational announcements, and more “slices of life” for an everyday Carolina student,” she said.

Both Lake and Dr. Tanner foresee social media making a lasting impression on the communications field, and are working to ensure that the university and its students are prepared for what’s to come. From live streaming commencement stories to covering the latest sporting event with a pair of Snapchat Spectacles, CJ Lake is keeping up with social trends at a rate that may put USC at the top of higher education’s social media game. “I know the future of social media at the university is bright,” said Lake, “I don’t think it’ll ever be a science, but being able to identify moments to create meaningful interactions between our brand and our audience will absolutely translate into a successful, sustainable program.”

West Virginia Online Colleges Universities

Pierpont Community and Technical College provides students with several flexible learning options, among those are programs that are offered fully online. The AAS Design Specialist is one program that has transitioned to being fully online along with the Liberal Studies program. Several of the other two-year programs offer varying levels of online course offerings, which are taught through the Blackboard system. Pierpont also has a lot of helpful resources for veterans, from helping them understand their benefits to resources for dependents and spouses of veterans.

A Guide to Online Colleges in West Virginia

Students looking for college opportunities in West Virginia have numerous choices. The state was home to 80 vocational schools, 2-year colleges and universities in 2013. Overall, West Virginia was ranked 34th in the U.S. for its number of post-secondary schools and 35th for student appeal. Over the past decade both public and private schools in West Virginia have added distance learning options to suit the needs of non-traditional students. These programs expand the opportunities available to students located around the world.

West Virginia University offers five undergraduate programs online and 29 online or blended graduate degree or certificate programs. Hundreds of undergraduate and graduate stand-alone courses are also available online every semester.

To illustrate the growing scope of higher educational opportunities in West Virginia, we’ve spotlighted schools, colleges and universities in Charleston, along with a look into the state’s online options.

City Spotlight: Charleston

Charleston, West Virginia is home to a satellite campus for Marshall University focusing on extension graduate programs in computer science and public health. The college was named one of America’s Best Buys by U.S. News World Report and a top 100 “Most Wired” campus by Yahoo. With its main campus just a short distance away in Huntington, students have access to all MU’s traditional resources.

West Virginia Junior College has three campuses throughout the state, one of which is in Charleston. WVJC focuses on training students for in-demand careers such as medical and dental assisting. BridgeValley Community and Technical College is one of nine colleges on 27 campuses throughout the providing associate degrees and certificate completion programs to online students. Its community outreach center works with K-12 institutions to further the STEM fields.

The University of Charleston also calls West Virginia’s capital home. UC has received numerous accolades, including ranking as one of the top regional colleges by U.S. News and was listed by the Princeton Review as one of the best colleges to attend in 2013. In 2011, the institution was recognized for having 100 percent of its BSN and ADN graduates pass the NCLEX-RN licensure exam on the first try.

Options for Online Learning in Charleston

BridgeValley has a variety of classes and programs online, enabling those with busy schedules and family responsibilities to continue their education. In 2013, the University of Charleston expanded, opening three new locations for distance learners. UC-Online offers financial aid options to qualifying students so that they can pursue any of the eight online degree programs available. According to the college’s website, UC is currently seeking authorization to provide distance education in states outside of West Virginia.

Tuition Cost of Living in West Virginia

Students attending college in West Virginia must plan for the various costs that are associated with higher education. Tuition is often the most expensive, but these costs will vary based on location, whether the school is public or private, or if students are residents of West Virginia. In 2012, West Virginia students with residency in the state paid an average annual tuition of $8,580, making West Virginia number 10 on the list of most affordable colleges.

While tuition and fees are a central component of a college budget, other expenditures are a necessity. This includes living expenses, transportation and medical expenses. The cost of living (COL) in West Virginia is approximately 5 percent lower than the national average. The following table provides the COL averages in West Virginia s urban areas, compared with the national average of 100.

Accreditation Standards in West Virginia

Students should look for regionally accredited colleges in West Virginia. Accreditation ensures a college meets quality standards, but is also required for students to qualify for federal loans. In West Virginia, regional accreditation is overseen through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools .

Additionally, West Virginia colleges hold programmatic accreditation for specific colleges, departments or programs within an institution. WVU Institute of Technology, for example, has earned program accreditation from ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission and ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission. WVU Tech s nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Search Accredited West Virginia Online Colleges

Students attending online colleges in West Virginia must consider what school to attend, degree costs, scheduling, accreditation and future career options. The custom search tool below helps students filter through West Virginia online colleges and programs, sorting by cost, accreditation and program type.

Co – op Education at Seneca – Seneca – Toronto, Canada

#

Graduate Jodi Rabeneck talks about her experience at Seneca and the strength of the College’s co-op programs.

Co-operative Education at Seneca

Co-operative (Co-op) Education programs give students the opportunity to use what they’ve learned in the classroom during a paid work period. Below are the questions we hear the most about our co-op programs. If you have any other questions, please give us a call at 416.491.5050 ext. 22233.

I completed co-op in high school – is it the same in college?

Co-op at the secondary school level is often unpaid experience, and therefore the employer may not expect the same level of performance as from a paid employee. Co-op at the college level is intended to provide you with the experience of a real full-time job. Many college co-op students have previous work experience and through their program have developed industry specific knowledge and skills. This combination of skills and experience enables you to secure a paid position, where employers expect you to perform as a regular full-time employee. Employers often view co-op students as an ideal way to address their short term staffing needs, while having the opportunity to preview a potential hire at a later date.

I am an international student – can I apply to a co-op program?

Yes, international students may apply for the co-op within the programs offering the co-op option, with the exception of oversubscribed programs such as Human Resources Management.

Note: Good communication skills are essential to most businesses and have been identified as a key factor in the hiring decision. Therefore the co-op application process involves the assessment of applicants’ written and verbal English communication skills, and a listening comprehension test.

Is there a fee?

Yes, the current co-op fee is $495 per work-term and it is billed upon acceptance into the co-op program. If a program contains more than one work-term, the co-op fee is billed in the semester prior to each subsequent work-term.

Do I have to pay another co-op fee if I don’t find a job the first time?

The co-op fee is not a placement fee, therefore for every semester that you are seeking a co-op placement you will be billed in the academic semester before your placement.

What do I have to do to get into the co-op program?

Mandatory co-op programs assess co-op eligibility upon admission to the College. Optional co-op programs have an application process subsequent to admission to the College. You must apply to the co-op program after completing one or more semesters of study depending on the program.

The following tips will help you keep your co-op option open: Enroll in the courses listed on your Program Progression Chart each semester as prescribed (see your Academic Advisor to obtain a copy of the Chart) Refrain from dropping the prescribed courses including (General Education courses) If you must drop a prescribed course, be sure to pick it up in the next/summer semester in order to stay on stream. Plan to achieve a 3.0 GPA or better each semester. Be aware of specific Co-op Requirements for your program. Attend the Co-op Information Session for your program.

Generally speaking, students must maintain a minimum C+ in the professional courses and C in all other subjects in order to continue in the program and complete the co-op component.

What if I don’t get the grade required?

In this case your application is normally denied, although you may speak to the Co-op Co-ordinator to discuss other options available.

What kind of job will the College get for me?

Co-op students are expected to use their own initiative in partnership with Co-op Co-ordinators to secure appropriate work-term opportunities. Acceptable co-op placements must be paid positions related to the student’s field of study that meet the minimum number of hours required.

Co-op Co-ordinators provide instruction on job search tools and strategies through the Co-op Professional Theory course, one-on-one advisement, and alternative resources to assist students with their job search.

The College cannot guarantee suitable co-op employment although every attempt will be made to assist students in the job search process.

Does the College have contacts with employers?

The Co-op Office maintains a database of employer contacts who have hired co-op students in the past. These employers are solicited each cycle for available short-term contract positions that would be suitable for the co-op group seeking work.

Employer Information

Seneca’s website for co-op employers has more information on our co-op programs and how to get in touch with us.

University of Chicago – Best Colleges Online #online #colleges #in #chicago

#

University of Chicago

Founded in 1890 as a coeducational college, the University of Chicago was one of the first colleges in Illinois to admit women. Though it had connections to the Baptist Church, it always operated as a nondenominational college. Students of all backgrounds could attend and even take classes through its Divinity School. Its main campus in Chicago has more than 200 acres of space and a number of both historic and more modern buildings. Several famous local architects like Henry Ives Cobb designed some of those buildings. Its Booth School of Business operates smaller satellite campuses and even gives students the chance to study abroad in London and Singapore.

According to ARWU and U..S. News World Report, the university ranks as one of the 10 best American colleges. Washington Monthly and Forbes also rank it as one of the nation s best. U.S. News World Report, Times, QS and ARWU all rank the university as one of the top 13 colleges on a global scale. In 2017, U.S. News World Report ranked it alongside Ivy League colleges like Harvard and Princeton and called it the third best college in America. The university also goes by the names of UChicago and U of C.

University of Chicago Accreditation Details

The University of Chicago first received accreditation in 1913 from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It more recently received a renewal or extension of that accreditation in 2016 after going through a renewal process the previous year. This is a form of regional accreditation.

Some of its professional programs have specialty accreditation too. It has accreditation from the American Bar Association for its law school and from the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools for its divinity program. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education also accredited some of its medical programs.

University of Chicago Application Requirements

Chicago is unique because it does not require that you score a certain figure on a test or that you have a minimum grade point average. It looks at other factors, including whether you took college prep courses, if you have any experience in your field and whether you participated in clubs and activities in high school. You ll have the chance to talk about those experiences in the application.

UChicago recommends using the Universal Application, Common Application or Coalition Application. Each one lets you create an account and apply to multiple colleges with the same information. You ll need to search for the university on those sites to access its application. The university asks for a list of extracurricular activities that you did in high school and for a personal statement. This statement should include what you hope to do in the future and why you selected Chicago. You ll also fill out a supplement on those sites that pertains to the university itself.

Once you complete your application, you can pay the application fee. The University of Chicago also offers waivers for those who need help paying the fee. You can submit the documents required by the university either online or through the mail, though if you submit online, you need to create an account with the site. The university asks for an official transcript and a secondary school report. The secondary school report is a record of your high school career. You also need to submit two evaluations from your current or past teachers. To ensure that you continue staying up to date with your studies, the university also asks for a mid-year progress report that shows your current grades and progress in your classes.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Unlike other colleges that charge a rate based on your credit hours, the University of Chicago charges a flat rate of around $51,000 a year for all full-time students. This allows you to take 12 to 18 credit hours each semester. It also charges a student life fee of $1,500 that entitles you to join clubs and participate in activities on campus. If you take only online classes, you can request that the university waive this fee. The university also estimates that most students spend around $4,000 a year on textbooks and personal expenses like food and clothing.

The type of financial aid that you qualify for depends on how much your family can help. When you complete the FAFSA, the University of Chicago uses that information to determine your family contribution and then creates your personalized aid package. Grants, loans and work-study jobs are the most common types of aid awarded. If your family makes less than $90,000 a year, you may qualify for the Odyssey scholarship program. This program can cover up to half of your annual costs. The university also has scholarships available for those who work as police officers or firefighters in the city and their dependents.

Online Degrees

The University of Chicago launched its online school as a way to reach more students. Called its Digital Teaching and Learning Department, it offers students the chance to take classes online when working on their degrees on campus. Some of the classes available are open classes that you can take without enrolling in the university, and other courses are open only to alumni. Open classes will not award you any course credit. The university is fairly unique because it doesn t offer traditional online degree programs. Its open courses let you learn more about topics that interest you, including urban education and marketing.

The university does offer some professional certificate programs that will let you earn a certificate without earning a full degree. One of these programs is in medical writing and editing. It teaches you proper medical terminology, how to transcribe records for medical professionals and even how to edit the work that you do for others. Business analytics is another online certificate program that might interest you. This program includes two business intelligence courses and two business analytics courses. You ll take classes on database reporting, data analysis, data mining and decision making.

Writers and those who want to work in publishing might enroll in the editing certificate program. It includes classes on editing online and editing manuscripts as well as an elective. The University of Chicago lets you select an elective based on your career goals such as editing digital books or medical editing.

“A friend who is a maven in finding outstanding resources, recommended Janice and Custom College Visits as we began the daunting college selection process. We worked with Janice on two fronts; to help create a list of colleges and to set-up meaningful colleges visits. The college visits were also a lot of fun for us as a family and very informative on so many levels. More importantly Janice helped make the college selection process manageable, not so daunting after all, and we felt no stone was left unturned in this important decision.

Tracy P. Parent of a New York City high school Senior

Thank you so much for planning such a wondrous experience for our son. The careful attention to detail was evident at every turn. Custom College Visits planning effort provided an appropriate path of discovery for our son and for us.

Michael C. New Jersey parent of a high school Junior

Hi Janice, Our trip was a thoroughly enjoyable family adventure! Thank you so much for the unique opportunities that you created for our daughter at each college. Meeting with a student at Harvard, was probably the most informative way to start the entire trip. She devoted a lot of time (in the rain) providing real college life details. She swiped us into dining halls, dorms & buildings that we might not have seen otherwise. The sophomore session at Princeton was wonderful! Thank you so much for everything that you did! We really were able to get the most out of each campus visit! Best, Julie

Julie, Parent of a high school Junior in Southern California

I found working with Custom College Visits a very positive experience. They were able to pinpoint colleges that were best suited for my daughter and the travel plans were well organized. In addition, they were able to set up an interview with a member of a college color guard, as my daughter had expressed interest in going to a school that had a color guard. I am very pleased with my experience with Custom College Visits, and would recommend them highly.

Mark L. Parent of high school junior in Northern California

Lili got accepted into her first choice school today (early decision): Boston University! She is thrilled beyond belief and relieved as well. We could not have done it without your help, it was invaluable. I think the High School Honors program she did there was probably very helpful and we would not have know about it without your forwarding the information to us. You rock! So, I am tipping my hat today to both you and Lili!

Kim T. Parent of high school senior in Kansas

I am happy to tell you that Nivi has been accepted early decision to Brown University. She is the first ivy leaguer in our family and we couldn’t be more proud! Her decision to apply was made easier because of the excellent experience she had during her customized tour via your company so thank you so much! We will be sure to recommend you to our friends here..

Gayathri S. Parent of high school senior Chennai, India

Thank you again for being so good at what you do. Our trip to the US was a huge success. I was on the verge of cancelling the trip but knew I couldn’t let my son down. That I even found you on the internet was a direct answer to my prayer for a miracle. The itinerary worked very well. I knew I was in good hands even before I boarded the plane to the U.S. and your attention to detail far exceeded my expectation.

Egbe O. Parent of international high school student

We had a wonderful trip to Philadelphia and Boston thanks to Janice Caine of Custom College Visits. She worked out an itinerary from start to finish. We visited 9 schools and it was as smooth as possible. Janice worked out tours and information sessions as well as meetings with tennis coaches. We have boy/girl twins and both were happy which is not an easy achievement. Not only did Janice work out the schedule but she recommended great schools in both towns. We would highly recommend her.

Phil S. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

“Thank you SO MUCH for your involvement in the Splash Parents’ Program this weekend! I am just reviewing the feedback forms, and your presentation received rave reviews across the board; many parents cited it as the highlight of the program for them! Some verbatim quotes include: ‘The Planning and Preparing for College Visits was a great eye opener;’ Thank you for all the effort, energy, and enthusiasm you put into making the event such a success.”

Marisa M. Coordinator, Splash Parents’ Program Stanford University

Our college process was two-fold. It began with getting a jump start on the standardized testing, and not waiting until spring of junior year to focus. I believe our outcome was successful because we had a well-managed plan helped along by an expert, Janice Caine, of Custom College Visits.

Lisa L. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

Happy New Year! Wanted to let you know that Charlie was accepted to Johns Hopkins Early Decision! Great news and very exciting all around. Thank you for all your help.

Beth A. Parent of a high school senior. Massachusetts

The state boasts a diverse mix of public and private universities and colleges that offer degrees both on-campus and online.

The State University System of Florida includes 12 public universities. Some of these institutions have flagship campuses as well as satellite locations to make them more accessible. As for private institutions, Independent Colleges Universities of Florida represents 30 not-for-profit schools across the state.

Thanks to the “2+2 system,” those earning an A.A. degree at a Florida community college can easily transfer their credits to one of the state’s public universities or a participating private institution.

What is a Radiology Technician? #online #colleges #for #radiology #technician

#

What is a Radiology Technician?

Explore how to become a radiology technician in today’s competitive health care job market.

Radiology technicians, also called radiographers or x-ray techs, produce x-rays of the patient for diagnostic purposes. A radiology technician is not to be confused with a radiology technologist, which performs more advanced imaging. Radiology technicians prepare the patients for the x-rays, operate the equipment, keep patient records, may even adjust and maintain the machines, and could eventually manage a radiology department. Preparing a patient for an x-ray can involve explaining the procedure, removing any jewelry, positioning both the patient and the machine properly, and employing protection devices so that only the portion of the body requiring the x-ray is exposed to radiation. They are responsible for controlling the equipment so that the radiographs are of the correct contrast, detail, and density. They work under the supervision of a physician and follow medical protocol very carefully. It is very important that they prevent any unnecessary radiation exposure to their patients, coworkers, or themselves. Some ways they do this are with lead aprons, shielding devices, and monitoring instruments to measure exposure to radiation.

Become a Radiology Technician

Radiology Technician Resources

Where do radiology tech’s work?

Radiology technicians usually work in hospitals or diagnostic imaging centers, and generally work standard 40-hour work weeks. However, some employers may require weekend, evening, or on-call hours. Some radiographers may work for multiple employers, or travel with their equipment in a large vehicle to their patients. With improvements in technology, some physicians’ offices may employ them as the technology becomes more affordable. These technicians are on their feet most of the day, and may also have to help lift disabled patients or heavy machinery, so it is important that they are physically capable of these tasks.

What type of training, education, and certification do I need?

You will need some education and training to take advantage of this career. The most common way is by earning an associate degree in radiography. An associate degree requires just two years of study. Just make sure you choose a radiography educational program that is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). While you could also earn a bachelor’s degree, it is not required for most of these positions. If you are still in high school and interested in this type of technician job, be sure you have completed courses in physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as in mathematics. Click here to search for a school in your state.

Certification in radiography is offered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Technologists who perform more advanced radiology screenings need to be licensed in some states, but radiographers do not. However, certification is often required by employers. Certification by the ARRT involves meeting their educational and ethics requirements, and passing a certification exam. You will need to have at least an associate degree in radiography from an accredited educational program, and be free of any felony or misdemeanor convictions. The actual certification exam will cover topics such as radiation protection, image production and evaluation, equipment operation, and patient care and education. Certification with the ARRT makes you more competitive, as it demonstrates that your skills meet professional standards.

Job outlook and salaries for a radiology technician

The average salary for a radiology technician was $52,000 in 2008. There is plenty of room for growth in this job, and the outlook in general is very good. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), radiologic technologists and technicians are projected to grow at a rate of 16% from 2008 through 2018. Further training can enable you to become a technologist with knowledge and training in more diagnostic imaging procedures, such as mammography, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MR). The American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) is a professional organization and good resource for information and networking opportunities. First you will have to find the right associate degree program though. Get started on your education in radiography and you can have a strong career with plenty of growth opportunities.

To learn more about becoming a radiology technician, you may wish to explore schools that offer radiology tech programs. You may also be interested in learning more about the certification and licensure process for radiology technicians across the country.

In our high-tech world, technology is constantly changing — a factor that fosters growth in job opportunities for qualified computer professionals. Many types of businesses and organizations need support from those with specialized training as computer networking experts. Professionals with this skill set:

    • Design and implement an organization’s computer networks
    • Protect computer systems from security breaches
    • Troubleshoot and fix problems that arise in a computer network

In order to prepare for these positions, online degree programs in network administration in computer networking combine the theoretical foundations of the field with real-world applications for these concepts.

    Overview of Computer Networking Degrees

Students enrolled in online computer networking degree programs learn the fundamentals of the field and the everyday challenges that computer professionals face. Program curriculum includes:

    • Networking Fundamentals: Students can learn about technologies used in different kinds of networks — wireless, local area, and wide area — and explore both how these technologies work and their similarities and differences. Classes focused on fundamentals typically address the essential vocabulary of networking; network design, protocols, management, and security; the history of the computer networking field; and network troubleshooting and documentation.
    • Concepts of Network Security: Courses on this topic look at assessing networks to determine how safe they are, steps that should be taken to mitigate security threats, and how to evaluate and choose technologies designed to keep network securities safe. Other subjects covered include infrastructure security, types of internal and external security threats, and regulations and laws that impact network security.
    • Network Communication: This aspect of the curriculum helps students learn about IP traffic management and IP routes, how to create point-to-point network connections, VPNs, VOIP, CATV, and relay frame connections. Students may work on projects that give them hands-on experience with the network communication concepts they learn in the classroom.

In addition, depending on the school they attend, undergraduate students may have the opportunity to get real-world experience in computer networking through internships. Students who pursue graduate degrees may be required to complete a thesis, dissertation, or comprehensive examination.

    Computer Networking Career Outlook

Thanks to the growing need for qualified professionals, graduates with computer networking degrees can pursue a number of different career options, such as:

    • Computer Support Specialists: Also known as network support specialists, these professionals advise workers in an organization on how to use their computer equipment. Job duties typically include evaluating, testing, and maintaining network systems; troubleshooting network systems and finding solutions for problems in a timely manner; and ensuring that users know how the company’s systems work. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this career is on the rise — a 17 percent increase in jobs nationwide is projected between 2012 and 2022. The salary range for computer support specialists is between $59,090 and $96,850.
    • Network and Computer Systems Administrators: Those who chose this career option are responsible for maintaining a company’s computers systems, including duties such as analyzing the computer and network needs of a company; installing software for employees to use; troubleshooting and repairing systems when something goes wrong; and training employees how to use the systems. The BLS reports that these professionals make a national average salary of $72,560. This profession is expected to grow approximately 12 percent between 2012 and 2022.

Those with computer networking degrees have additional options, and may find jobs as information security analysts, network architects, computer programmers and software developers.

Newport Beach, California – City Information, Fast Facts, Schools, Colleges, and

    #

    Newport Beach, California

    Overview

    Introduction to Newport Beach

Incorporated in 1906, the Pacific coastal city of Newport Beach, California, is situated in Orange County, 10 miles south of downtown Santa Ana and 17 miles south of Anaheim. Bordering the city is Huntington Beach to the west, Costa Mesa and Irvine to the north and Crystal Cove State Park to the east. Newport Beach is home to several well known communities, including Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, Newport Coast, San Joaquin Hills and Balboa Peninsula (also known as Balboa).

In 1870, Captain Samuel S. Dunnells successfully steered his 105-ton river steamer, the “Vaquero,” through upper Newport Bay, dispelling the prevalent theory at the time that the bay was too treacherous for travel. The harbor was named a “New Port” by the principal landowners in the area, James and Robert McFadden, who created McFadden’s Landing and a few years later, McFadden’s Wharf. By the early 1900s, Newport Beach had already become a tourist destination with the arrival of the Pacific Electric Railway, which terminated at the Balboa Pavilion. By the mid-20th century, a number of famous celebrities would call Newport Beach their home. One of the most recognizable was John Wayne (known as “the Duke”). Other area celebrities over the years have included Shirley Temple, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Roy Rogers, Joey Bishop and George Burns. Today, Newport Beach remains very much a tourist destination, possessing a harbor crowded with boats, streets busy with shoppers and 6.2 miles of beaches filled with surfers and swimmers.

Things To Do In Newport Beach

Visitors to Newport Beach will never be at a loss for things to do, places to go or sights to see. True to its name, the city offers numerous beaches to suit every beachgoer’s taste, among them the Wedge (a body-surfing hot-spot). Other outdoor attractions include:

    • The Catalina Flyer: a giant 500 passenger catamaran, which provides daily transportation from the Balboa Peninsula to Santa Catalina Island.
    • The Balboa Fun Zone: features a Ferris wheel, a 14-foot trampoline, an old-time carousel built in 1938, laser tag, and bumper cars in addition to restaurants and shops.
    • The Back Bay: a wildlife sanctuary.
    • The Newport Aquatic Center: offers kayaking, canoeing, and rowing and has been used as a training ground for many Olympians throughout the years.
    • The Balboa Island Ferry: transports pedestrians, cars, and bikes across the harbor channel between Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula.
    • Fashion Island: provides an outdoor shopping experience with over 200 stores and 40 restaurants.

Among the many cultural and historic attractions in Newport Beach are the following:

    • Newport Theater Arts Center: Known as the finest community theater in Orange County.
    • Sherman Gardens Photo Tour: includes a beautiful public garden as well as the Sherman Library for California history.
    • The Orange County Museum of Art: exhibits art from a variety of modern artists.
    • Balboa Pavilion: Newport Beach’s first landmark, built in 1905.
    • McFadden’s Wharf: built in 1889.
    • Newport Harbor Nautical Museum: the largest nautical museum in Orange County.
    • Lido Marine Village: open air center with brick walkways, interesting shops, and gondola rides.

Annual events which take place in Newport Beach include the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race and Newport Beach International Film Festival (both held in April), the Newport Beach Festival of the Arts (held in May), the SandCastle Contest (a sand-sculpture contest held at Corona del Mar City and State Beach every summer), Flight of the Lasers (a sailboat race held in Newport Harbor every July), Character Boat Parade/Wooden Boat Festival (also held in July), Taste of Newport (a three-day food, wine and music festival held in September) and the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade (held in mid-December).

Orange County is home to several world-class attractions that are located outside the city borders of Newport Beach but still within easy commuting distance. These include Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park (Anaheim), Knott’s Berry Farm Knott’s Soak City (Buena Park), the International Surfing Museum (Huntington Beach), the Orange County Zoo (Orange), the Wild Rivers Waterpark (Irvine) and the Marconi Automotive Museum (Tustin).

Orange County is also home to several pro sports teams. Baseball fans can watch Major League action when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play their home games. Hockey fans can take the short trip to Anaheim to see the NHL’s Mighty Ducks. Surfers will recognize nearby Huntington Beach as home to the Surfing Hall of Fame.

    What is a super-score?

A super-score is the selection of your best scores. For example, let’s say you took the ACT three times and received the following scores:

    1. English 27, Math 28, Reading 29. Science 25 = Composite 27
    2. English 28. Math 31. Reading 28, Science 26 = Composite 28
    3. English 27, Math 30, Reading 28, Science 30 = Composite 30

The colleges listed above would cherry pick your best scores for their super-score:

  • English 28, Math 31, Reading 29, Science 30 = Composite 30

As you can see, the super-score is better than any one of the tests. The sum of the parts are greater than the whole!

Mental Health Problems Rising Among College Students – NBC News #colleges

    #

Mental Health Problems Rising Among College Students

Amy Ebeling struggled with anxiety and depression throughout college, as her moods swung from high to low, but she resisted help until all came crashing down senior year.

“At my high points I was working several jobs and internships — I could take on the world,” said Ebeling, 24, who graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey last December.

“But then I would have extreme downs and want to do nothing,” she told NBC News. “All I wanted to do was sleep. I screwed up in school and at work, I was crying and feeling suicidal.”

More than 75 percent of all mental health conditions begin before the age of 24, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. which is why college is such a critical time.

Ebeling resisted getting therapy, but eventually got a diagnosis of bipolar II disorder from a psychiatrist associated with Ramapo’s counseling office.

“Then everything fell into place,” said Ebeling, who is doing well on medication today.

College counselors are seeing a record number of students like Ebeling, who are dealing with a variety of mental health problems, from depression and anxiety, to more serious psychiatric disorders.

“What has increased over the past five years is threat-to-self characteristics, including serious suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors,” said Ashley Stauffer, project manager for the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State University.

According to its data. collected from 139 institutions, 26 percent of students who sought help said they had intentionally hurt themselves; 33.2 percent had considered suicide, numbers higher than the previous year.

And according to the 2016 UCLA Higher Education Research Institute survey of freshmen, nearly 12 percent say they are “frequently” depressed.

Katy Tur: Why I Chose UC Santa Barbara 2:51

At Ramapo College, counselors are seeing everything from transition adjustment to more serious psychiatric disorders, according to Judith Green, director of the campus’ Center for Health Counseling Services.

Being away from home for the first time, access to alcohol and drugs and the rigorous demands of academic life can all lead to anxiety and depression.

Millennials, in particular, have been more vulnerable to the stressors of college life, Green told NBC News.

“This generation has grown up with instant access via the internet to everything,” she said. “This has led to challenges with frustration tolerance and delaying gratification.”

Millennials tend to hold on to negative emotions, which can lead to self-injury, she said. It’s also the first generation that will not likely do as well financially as their parents.

“Students are working so much more to contribute and pay for college,” said Green. “Seniors don’t have jobs lined up yet.”

‘I dragged myself to the counseling center’

Like Ebeling, many students often experience mental illness breaks in college.

She had been in grief counseling after the death of her father at age 8, and even had therapy — but refused medication — during her teen years.

“I thought that it was weakness — ‘why can’t I just snap out of it?'” she said. “It became apparent it just wasn’t that easy.”

She hit a deep low her senior year.

“I was a crazy over-achiever,” she said. “I got involved in all the clubs and extracurricular activities.” But when her mood dropped, she said, “I couldn’t do anything, but had all those responsibilities.”

“In one class I panicked so much, I freaked out,” said Ebeling. “I dragged myself to the counseling center.”

The resources are available, according to Green, who first counseled Ebeling.

Ramapo reaches out to freshman and their parents at orientation and reinforces the availability of mental health resources throughout the year. The college also maintains an online anonymous psychological screening tool so students can see if therapy might be helpful.

“Students are electronically savvy, so we meet them where they are,” said Green.

They also sponsor wellness fairs so students learn about nutrition, exercise and even financial well-being — “the whole gamut to keep themselves well,” she said.

As for Ebeling, she took her experience and devoted her senior capstone project to learn more about mental illness. “It was therapeutic.”

“Kids going to college need to realize it’s not a weakness,” she said. “They shouldn’t be afraid to get help. ”

College Opt-Out: A Student Leaves School To Start Her Own Company 5:21

“I try to be open and talk about it with friends and family,” said Ebeling. “Don’t shy away from it. It needs to be addressed. Let go of the stigma.”

Ebeling had good communication with her mother regarding her mental health diagnosis, but said other students should consider sharing their medical information if they “feel they have a good support system.”

“I have friends who tried to discuss mental health issues with family members and completely got brushed off, which can be crushing and damaging,” she said.

“I think both students and parents need to keep an open mind, but at the end the of the day, those who are seeking help need to realize that they are doing this for themselves and no one else, and they need to put themselves first and foremost no matter what.”

    • Let your child know that mental health conditions are common — one in five college students — so they don’t feel alone.
    • Emphasize the importance of exercise, sleep and diet.
    • Know the warning signs of mental stress and when and how to seek help. Check out the college’s resources.
    • And because of privacy laws, come up with a plan in advance for which information about mental health can be shared with the parent.
