To expand school computer coding clubs in Wales – BBC News

£1.3m to expand school computer coding clubs in Wales

Schools are to be given £1.3m to set up clubs to teach computer coding.

The investment over five years is part of the Welsh Government’s £100m to raise school standards over the assembly term.

Education Secretary Kirsty Williams said she wanted all pupils to have the opportunity to learn about and get involved in coding as the importance of digital skills continues to grow.

It is estimated there will be 100,000 new coding jobs by 2020 in the UK.

The Welsh Government said there are currently about 1.5 million jobs in the digital sector in the UK, 400,000 of which involve coding.

“Code is part of almost everyone’s life,” said Ms Williams. “When we check out social media, access an app or computer we are using systems created through code. It is an essential building block of our modern world and I want to make sure as many of our young people have knowledge of it as they develop their digital skills.”

The investment aims to expand the number of code clubs for learners aged three to 16 from the current number of 300.

Three years ago experts warned schools in Wales were in danger of being left behind in terms of digital education.

The new national curriculum, expected to be up and running by 2021, includes a recommendation computer programming and IT be given the same importance as literacy and numeracy.

  • Computer code is a set of rules and instructions, made up of words and numbers
  • When you put them in the right order, it will tell your computer what to do
  • Code is what makes it possible to create computer software, apps and websites
  • The apps on your phone, Facebook and this page you’re reading is all made with code

Ms Williams made the announcement at Llandough Primary school in the Vale of Glamorgan, where computer skills are already taught throughout the curriculum from nursery to year six.

But the school headmaster hopes the coding club it plans to open from September will add another dimension to learning.

“We are using coding on a daily basis and we’re engaged with lots of different companies who have helped us set up coding in our school,” said Mark Ellis.

“The curriculum itself is bringing coding into our school as well, but we are going to look to the wider community now and we want to look at our grandparents, our parents, and younger siblings coming in using our technologies to be able to have coding experiences and use them in the wider world.”

He explained the club model would offer flexibility and involve families so they can play a full part.

“There is a lack of understanding for some parents who have not seen what coding is and what it brings to children,” he said.

Image caption Pupils at Llandough Primary School will get a coding club from September

Maria Quevedo from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which runs 10,000 coding clubs across 10 countries, said it was important young people became makers not just consumers.

“Every single job has an element of technology and digital in it and as time passes the world is becoming increasingly digital and technology is key,” she said.

Meanwhile, 10 year old Iolo, who was busy coding during the ministerial visit, had finished programming his game.

He said it had been almost as much fun as playing computer games and he would quite like to do it as a job.

Ms Williams said she wanted “as many schools as possible” to take up the opportunity and coding in particular was a specific skill which would help Welsh children compete in the global market in future.

Virginia’s Leader in SOL Science and Social Studies Practice and Review for Elementary and Middle School

If you are looking for help preparing yourself, your students, or your children for the Virginia Standards of Learning tests in elementary or middle school Social Studies and Science, you have come to the right place. Request a trial password here if you are visiting this site for the first time.

Solpass activities are intended to supplement, not replace, solid classroom instruction by providing review of the specific concepts and information that the students are likely to encounter in the classroom and on the SOL end-of-year tests. By making test preparation easy and convenient, we hope to encourage excellent classroom instruction, which need not be sacrificed for narrowly focused “teaching to the test”.

New History and Social Science Standards to be implemented in the 2017-18 school year.

In 2015, the Virginia Department of Education adopted new standards in history and social science. Teachers will begin to teach the new content in the 2017-2018 school year. Students will be tested on the content in the spring 2018 testing season. Guides and activities on SOLpass will be updated to reflect the new standards before classroom implementation begins in the fall of 2017.

Science Standards are scheduled for revision in 2017

The Virginia Department of Education is scheduled to review and update science and english standards in 2017. The standards currently in use are those adopted in 2010.

VDOE reduces the number of SOL tests

In 2014, Virginia eliminated the following five elementary and middle school SOL tests: Grade-3 Science, Grade-3 Social Studies, U.S. History to 1865, U.S. History 1865-Present and Grade-5 Writing. In grades were the SOL year-end test has been eliminated, teachers are expected, as before, to teach the curriculum and assess student learning in a variety of ways throughout the school year.

Here you will find actual SOL tests (and answer keys) from prior years for all grades in English, Science, and Math, and Social Studies.

Cloud Computing Options #insurance #software,insurance #agency #management #software,insurance #billing #software,insurance #agency

“Cloud” Computing and Thin Client Solutions

As we find ourselves in an increasingly fast-paced and mobile world, our dependency on technology to provide real-time access to information increases as well. One of the most utilitarian advancements of technology towards this end has been the advent of thin client or ‘Cloud’ based computing systems.

In a nutshell: A thin client solution allows a computing device (PC, IPad, IPhone, Android device – aka the ‘client’) to ‘dial in’ to the desktop of another computer (aka the ‘server’). The user can then pass keystrokes and mouse clicks to the desktop of that computer, and receive screen shots of what the resulting screen looks like on the other computer (server) to their local computing device (client). It is called ‘thin’ client because you wind up passing very little data over the internet, just screen shots, mouse clicks and keyboard clicks.

The term ‘Cloud Computing’ appeared around 2006, and encapsulates the notion of thin client computing with the ability to securely store your data ‘somewhere else’. There are a variety of solutions available to your agency that provide thin client access to your local software, and provide automated methods to back up your local data to a secure, offsite location.

Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services) is probably the best solution thin client solution for multiple remote users to access your local data for long periods of time. It is also the most expensive requiring the services of a local hardware technician, a Server operating system (Windows Server 2003, 2008, etc. which can cost $800 or more), and Remote Desktop licenses – which run about $80-$100 apiece (although you typically get one license for free). The advantages of using Remote Desktop to dial into a Server based operating system are that it is more secure, less prone to data corruption, and does not require a separate computer for each person logging in.

There are less expensive (even free) solutions for people that need to occasionally dial in to the home office, or dial in one at a time. These solutions all require that there is a separate computer at the home office, for each person dialing in. Some of these solutions can be found at: and Each product has advantages and disadvantages regarding ease of use, reliability, supported client devices, and features; and there are several factors such as how printing and file transfers are handled between the ‘Free’ and ‘Pro’ versions of each software that must be taken into account. If you are considering one of these less expensive thin client solutions, it might be money well spent to hire a tech for an hour or so to help you sort out your options.

Another aspect to Cloud Based computing is the ability to securely backup your data by copying your files over the internet to a secure facility offsite, thus limiting your liability if your local location burns down, or is involved in a natural disaster. Some companies that offer offsite backup solutions for a small fee are and With a little help from a local tech – you can quickly set one of these programs up, and then have peace of mind that your data is stored securely ‘somewhere else’. Just make sure that your tech sets the program up to send the files over the internet at night, otherwise you will see your daytime internet speeds drop dramatically.

Of course Agency Software, Inc. offers turnkey hosting solutions as well. If you’d rather not worry about configuring your Remote Desktop solution, or making sure your data is securily backed up, we recommend the services of EME Cloud For about $30 per user / per month, DJ and his staff will web-enable your Agency Software applications for use on nearly any device, from nearly anywhere in the world. If you have questions, please fee free to give us a call at (800)342-7327 to discuss your Cloud Computing needs.

Breach at DocuSign Led to Targeted Email Malware Campaign – Krebs

Krebs on Security

Computer security breach

DocuSign, a major provider of electronic signature technology, acknowledged today that a series of recent malware phishing attacks targeting its customers and users was the result of a data breach at one of its computer systems. The company stresses that the data stolen was limited to customer and user email addresses, but the incident is especially dangerous because it allows attackers to target users who may already be expecting to click on links in emails from DocuSign.

San Francisco-based DocuSign warned on May 9 that it was tracking a malicious email campaign where the subject line reads, Completed: Wire Transfer Instructions for recipient-name Document Ready for Signature. The missives contained a link to a downloadable Microsoft Word document that harbored malware.

Computer security breach

A typical DocuSign email. Image: DocuSign.

The company said at the time that the messages were not associated with DocuSign, and that they were sent from a malicious third-party using DocuSign branding in the headers and body of the email. But in an update late Monday, DocuSign confirmed that this malicious third party was able to send the messages to customers and users because it had broken in and stolen DocuSign s list of customers and users.

As part of our ongoing investigation, today we confirmed that a malicious third party had gained temporary access to a separate, non-core system that allows us to communicate service-related announcements to users via email, DocuSign wrote in an alert posted to its site. A complete forensic analysis has confirmed that only email addresses were accessed; no names, physical addresses, passwords, social security numbers, credit card data or other information was accessed. No content or any customer documents sent through DocuSign’s eSignature system was accessed; and DocuSign’s core eSignature service, envelopes and customer documents and data remain secure.

The company is asking people to forward any suspicious emails related to DocuSign to [email protected], and then to delete the missives.

They may appear suspicious because you don’t recognize the sender, weren’t expecting a document to sign, contain misspellings (like “” without an ‘i’ or, contain an attachment, or direct you to a link that starts with anything other than or, reads the advisory.

If you have reason to expect a DocuSign document via email, don t respond to an email that looks like it s from DocuSign by clicking a link in the message. When in doubt, access your documents directly by visiting, and entering the unique security code included at the bottom of every legitimate DocuSign email. DocuSign says it will never ask recipients to open a PDF, Office document or ZIP file in an email.

DocuSign was already a perennial target for phishers and malware writers, but this incident is likely to intensify attacks against its users and customers. DocuSign says it has more than 100 million users, and it seems all but certain that the criminals who stole the company s customer email list are going to be putting it to nefarious use for some time to come.

ForensiT Domain Migration #windows, #data, #migration, #solutions, #technology, #developer, #system, #it,

User Profile Wizard 3.12

Simple. Scalable. Low cost

User Profile Wizard 3.12 is the latest version of ForensiT s powerful workstation migration tool. User Profile Wizard will migrate your current user profile to your new user account so that you can keep all your existing data and settings.

Large-scale migration made easy

User Profile Wizard has been used to automatically migrate hundreds of thousands of workstations to new domains. It can be used to migrate workstations to a new domain from any existing Windows network, or from a Novell NDS network; it can join standalone computers to a domain for the first time, or migrate workstations from a domain back to a workgroup.

No need to lose personal data and settings

A User Profile is where Windows stores your stuff. Normally, when you change your user account Windows will create a new profile for you, and you lose all your data and settings – your “My Documents”, “My Pictures” and “My Music” files and all the other information that makes your computer personal to you, like your desktop wallpaper, Internet favorites and the lists of documents you’ve recently opened.

User Profile Wizard is an easy-to-use migration tool that means this doesn’t need to happen – you can simply migrate your original profile to your new user account. User Profile Wizard does not move, copy or delete any data. Instead it configures the profile “in place” so that it can be used by your new user account. This makes the process both very fast and very safe.

With the User Profile Wizard Deployment Kit you can build a scalable, enterprise solution to automatically migrate tens of thousands of workstations.

Scalable – up or down

Unlike some alternatives, User Profile Wizard does not assume that there is an enterprise directory in place. It supports all environments from Small Business Server through to a Global Domain Consolidation.

  • Migrates all user profile data and settings on Windows XP/Windows 7/8 and Windows 10
  • Automatically joins a machine to a new domain
  • Supports domain migrations over a VPN
  • Supports all Active Directory and Samba domains
  • Migrates from a domain back to a workgroup
  • Includes Enterprise strength scripting support
  • Supports push migrations of remote machines
  • Tried and trusted – over one million licenses sold

Corporate and Professional Editions

User Profile Wizard comes in two editions. Read our User Profile Wizard Feature Comparison to find out what features are availble in the Corporate and Professional editions. The Corporate Edition is licensed per workstation. The Professional Edition is licensed per technician.

Top 3 Computer Degrees to Consider for Your IT Career Path

There’s an ongoing debate around whether or not you need a four-year degree to get a good IT job. Some say simply having certifications and years of experience is more than good enough to get hired, while some companies won’t even consider you if you don’t have a four-year degree. Well, I’m not going to carry this debate on; only you can decide whether or not you feel you need a degree to get a job. But if you do decide this is the right path for you, these are what I believe to be the top three IT-related four-year degrees you should consider.

Bachelors in Information Technology and Information Systems

This is most definitely the top choice if your goal is to excel in dealing with end-user computing, systems administration and/or systems engineering. This degree program touches on almost all aspects of information technology and information systems. Classes such as Introduction to UNIX, Windows Server Networking, Database Concepts, Web Design I II and Fundamentals of Business Systems Development will help you to build a solid foundation in general IT knowledge.

Bachelors in Computer Science

A computer science (CS) degree is one of the more common degree programs pursued by budding IT professionals. That being said, a CS degree is not for everyone. While computer science is a desirable degree, it’s also a very difficult degree program. Unlike the BSIT degree, which focuses more on systems and processes, the CS degree focuses more on programming, mathematics and computer theory. Courses you might find in a typical CS degree track include, Programming Principles, Algorithms, Logic Computation, Calculus and Data Structures. If mathematics and programming languages aren’t your thing, I would avoid pursuing a computer science degree.

Bachelors in Information Science

In today’s world, data is king. We have become digital pack rats of sorts, storing everything from music to documents to pictures and videos. Where does all of this data get stored and how does it get stored? Well, if you had a degree in Information Science, you would be able to answer those questions in much more depth. Not only do we store our personal stuff electronically, the government and private companies also store data, and their need for skilled professionals to help them manage data grows every day. Having a four-year degree in Information Science would allow you to understand how to best store and manage all of the data that is accumulated by a government entity, a school, a financial institution or a variety of private companies. Classes you would see in a typical Information Science program would be Intermediate Programming, Relational Database Concepts and Applications, Web Database Development and Computer Systems and Architecture.

These are just three examples of what I believe to be the top degree choices for IT-related career fields. There are many other degrees out there that would definitely suffice for furthering your education; you have to decide what is important to you. Lay out your plan of what you want to do in the IT arena, and then research the degrees that would best fit your road map. Once you’ve decided on a degree program, make sure you do your due diligence to select a school that is respectable and accredited and that offers the exact program you want. Don’t settle for a school because it you can get through it quickly or because it’s super cheap. Your education is not just a financial investment but an investment of your time as well. Depending on whether you decide to be a half-time or full-time student, you could be investing four to six years in a degree program. In the end, when you walk across that stage to accept your diploma and head out into the job market, you can rest assured your resume will stand out and your confidence will grow.

Computer Programming Courses

Computer Programming Courses

What is computer programming?

Computer programming refers to the process of developing a series of instructions in order to enable a computer to perform specific tasks. These instructions are referred to as computer programs .

The purpose behind programming is to find a sequence of instructions that will automate performing a particular task or solving a particular problem. These instructions are written in special programming languages, and people wishing to pursue a career in computer programming are required to learn these languages.

Different types of programming languages are used for different functions. Being competent in computer programming is a very valuable skill, as there is great demand for qualified and experienced computer programmers.

What will I learn when I study computer programming?

Computer programming courses may differ depending on where you study. You are therefore strongly advised to do adequate research about the particular course that you wish to pursue.

Always bear in mind that different computer training courses may teach you different programming languages. Some employers require candidates with knowledge of specific programming languages. It is thus important to frequent popular job websites in order to gain insight into the specific requirements that prospective employers are looking for when hiring programmers.

Although we do not offer programming courses at Skills Academy, we do offer many other computer-based courses. We also offer courses with a type of programming component to them.

Can I study computer programming at college?

There are many institutions, including colleges, which offer computer programming courses. When choosing a course, you need to make sure that it is offered by an accredited institution, and that it will cover the subjects you want to study.

It is worthwhile to take as much time as you need to research the different options. You may discover that you are actually more passionate about another area in computers.

Conducting adequate research and comparing your options is important. It is better to take your time and to be certain about your decision, as opposed to rushing into a decision and not being happy.

Students who take the time and effort to do research are more likely to finish their studies, and are generally happier with regard to the choices that they have made.

Can I study computer programming part-time?

Some educational institutions may require you to study on a full-time basis. This means that you will need to commute to and from campus every day. Fortunately, this is not your only option. There are a number of educational institutions that allow you to study part-time.

Many students prefer to study part-time via distance learning. Studying via distance learning means that you can study at home and create your own studying schedule. You will not be required to attend classes and you can study at a pace that suits you.

Although Skills Academy does not offer any programming courses, we do offer a wide range of other computer courses that you can study via distance learning. Some of these courses have a programming component to them, even though programming is not the primary focus.

What can I do with a qualification in computer programming?

Once you have obtained a qualification in computer programming, it can benefit you in a number of ways. You could use it to enhance your CV, or to show a prospective employer that you are serious about your career.

Depending on the type of qualification that you receive, you could potentially use it to enter the job market. Different companies and positions have different requirements. It is up to you as the student to conduct your own research into the job market.

Smart Desks: Collaborative Learning Desk and Tables #collaborative #learning, #modular #desks,

SMARTdesks® Collaborative Learning Desk and Table Systems: Computer Desks and Conference Tables with Unlimited Design Possibilities

TAO, the yin-yang circular table, is lightness chasing darkness. You can’t have lightness without darkness. One defines the other, and one cannot have one without the other. Both are present, but in dynamic balance, in the moment.

RIO literally means “river.” The shape describes the flow of two working together. As two are seated at RIO, they are acting within the framework of yin-yang. Dynamic balance is found in this extension of the circular yin-yang.

  • The Power of 3— Exponential Flexibility for Active Learning Environments

TriO’s three table top sections suggest groupings for team work, but also imply privacy in the context of a digital commons area. This encourages focus and engagement, with flexibility—the watch word in project-based learning.

Technology users can power up from six power outlets and 6 USB power outlets. Additional technology can be stored in the center column with convenient cable management. AV technology stored in the console may be access from locking vented doors in the base, or from the hinged top.

  • Customize for your technology and space plan
This freestanding collaboration conference table is engineered for easy technology integration. Choose your colors to suit the interior design scheme. Edge treatment may be a simple PVC with radius corners, or polyurathane edge that simulat4es wood, but is more comfortable and resists nicks and dings of heavy use. Monitor attaches with wall mount. Cable ways organize the installation and hide clutter. Rear side can also be set up for use with monitor and lounge seating.

  • Trapezoidal elements that make collaborative conference rooms interactive
These mobile trapezoidal tables make triangles, hexagons and large conference tables. They may be accessorized with pop-up data ports, laptop power ports, cable pass-throughs and more. Customize to your taste in a wide range of laminates with PVC edges, or 3D thermofoil and contoured edges. Ask our Design Center for ideas and space planning floor plans to explore the possibilities.

  • Any small nook can be a huge collaboration space
Boost has a small footprint, but a large technology organizational space. The flipIT lift motorless monitor mount supports a nice sized screen all can see, and the HuddleVu video switching system lets the presenters change on the fly with a touch of a button. Give your meetings a Boost!

  • Exchange revolutionizes collaborative learning spaces
Each Exchange table element is a right triangle with a curve to the left or right of the user. Buy them in mirror image pairs to construct shapes with reflective formal balance, such as triangles. Buy them alike to make radial symmetry, such as pinwheels, hexagons, and facing rectangles. People collaborate over the corners of the designs, or side-by-sidein teams. Change up the shapes using the same Exchange elements!

  • Collab—designed in collaboration with Ivy League thought leaders
Our client chose this equilayteral triangle collaborative shape, and then we went to work on the robust column in the center, under the table, that lets IT integration and access, eliminating clutter. The space was core drilled, and we provided layout shapes that could be placed in the room to plan for the power to come up through the columns—even before the actual tables were manufactured. flipIT laptop safes were specified with lids that were made to match the grain of the laminate chosen. special directional microphones were integrated for open dialog for each one in the space. Richly stained wood moulding finishes the edging. Created custom. Just like yours can be.

  • Piano: SMARTdesks original computer conference table
Originally designed as a line-of-sight conference table, Piano integrates LCD screens with flipIT monitor mounts and features access to cables and small components in its central technology well by lifting its signature Piano lid. Its shape works well for teleconferencing with one screen and one camera with all faces in view, and data displays that give context for visual cues when people are looking at their screens. Screens are never obtrusive, but can be folded under the table instantly to reduce visual clutter all the more. Custom made for each client.

  • How do you make curved ampitheater arrangements with modular tables?

The answer is the radical Pi. Based on the geometry of the circle, not the rectangle, Pi Collaboration Tables nest together like links in a serpentine belt to accomplish arrangements that defy description. And these gently curved rows are easy to arrange, and rearrange as needs change. May also incorporate flipIT laptop safe or monitor mounts for multi-use classrooms.

  • Collaborative Learning Furniture for Corporate Office Conference Spaces and Higher Education

Internet Cafe Sample Business Plan – Executive Summary #executive #summary, #objectives,

    Plan Outline

    Internet Cafe Business Plan

    Executive Summary

JavaNet, unlike a typical cafe, will provide a unique forum for communication and entertainment through the medium of the Internet. JavaNet is the answer to an increasing demand. The public wants: (1) access to the methods of communication and volumes of information now available on the Internet, and (2) access at a cost they can afford and in such a way that they aren’t socially, economically, or politically isolated. JavaNet’s goal is to provide the community with a social, educational, entertaining, atmosphere for worldwide communication.

This business plan is prepared to obtain financing in the amount of £24,000. The supplemental financing is required to begin work on site preparation and modifications, equipment purchases, and to cover expenses in the first year of operations. Additional financing has already been secured in the form of: (1) £24,000 from the Oregon Economic Development Fund (2) £19,000 of personal savings from owner Cale Bruckner (3) £36,000 from three investors (4) and £9,290 in the form of short-term loans.

JavaNet will be incorporated as an LLC corporation. This will shield the owner Cale Bruckner, and the three outside investors, Luke Walsh, Doug Wilson, and John Underwood, from issues of personal liability and double taxation. The investors will be treated as shareholders and therefore will not be liable for more than their individual personal investment of £12,000 each.

The financing, in addition to the capital contributions from the owner, shareholders and the Oregon Economic Development Fund, will allow JavaNet to successfully open and maintain operations through year one. The large initial capital investment will allow JavaNet to provide its customers with a full featured Internet cafe. A unique, upscale, and innovative environment is required to provide the customers with an atmosphere that will spawn socialization. Successful operation in year one will provide JavaNet with a customer base that will allow it to be self sufficient in year two.

    1.1 Objectives

JavaNet’s objectives for the first three years of operation include:

    • The creation of a unique, upscale, innovative environment that will differentiate JavaNet from local coffee houses.
    • Educating the community on what the Internet has to offer.
    • The formation of an environment that will bring people with diverse interests and backgrounds together in a common forum.
    • Good coffee and bakery items at a reasonable price.
    • Affordable access to the resources of the Internet and other online services.

    1.2 Keys to Success

The keys to the success for JavaNet are:

    • The creation of a unique, innovative, upscale atmosphere that will differentiate JavaNet from other local coffee shops and future Internet cafes.
    • The establishment of JavaNet as a community hub for socialization and entertainment.
    • The creation of an environment that won’t intimidate the novice user. JavaNet will position itself as an educational resource for individuals wishing to learn about the benefits the Internet has to offer.
    • Great coffee and bakery items.

    1.3 Mission

As the popularity of the Internet continues to grow at an exponential rate, easy and affordable access is quickly becoming a necessity of life. JavaNet provides communities with the ability to access the Internet, enjoy a cup of coffee, and share Internet experiences in a comfortable environment. People of all ages and backgrounds will come to enjoy the unique, upscale, educational, and innovative environment that JavaNet provides.

    1.4 Risks

The risks involved with starting JavaNet are:

    • Will there be a demand for the services offered by JavaNet in Eugene?
    • Will the popularity of the Internet continue to grow, or is the Internet a fad?
    • Will individuals be willing to pay for the service JavaNet offers?
    • Will the cost of accessing the Internet from home drop so significantly that there will not be a market for Internet Cafes such as JavaNet?

How to Set up iCloud – Use iCloud Backup #icloud #backup

How to Set up ICloud Use ICloud Backup

    Screen Capture by S. Shapoff

It used to be that keeping data in sync across multiple computers and devices could be a challenge that required syncing, add-on software, or a lot of coordination. Even then, data would almost inevitably get lost or older files would accidentally replace newer ones.

Thanks to iCloud. Apple s web-based data storage and syncing service, sharing data like contacts, calendars, emails, and photos across multiple computers and devices is easy. With iCloud enabled on your devices, each time you re connected to the internet and make changes to iCloud-enabled apps, those changes will automatically be uploaded to your iCloud account and then shared to all your compatible devices.

With iCloud, keeping data in sync is as simple as setting up each of your devices to use your iCloud account.

Here s What You Need to Use ICloud

    • An Apple ID/iTunes account. (Don t have one? Learn how to get one .) Your iCloud account will use the same username and password.
    • A Mac running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, OR
    • A PC running Windows Vista or 7 or higher and iCloud Control Panel, OR
    • An iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5 or higher, AND
    • iTunes 10.5 or higher

To use the web-based iCloud apps, you ll need Safari 5, Firefox 21, Internet Explorer 9, or Chrome 27, or higher.

Assuming you ve got the required software, let s move on to setting up iCloud, beginning with desktop and laptop computers.

Continue to 2 of 5 below.

You can use iCloud without connecting your desktop or laptop computer to it. It does have great features for iPhone and iPad users but you ll probably find it most useful if you re syncing data to your computer, too.

How to Set up ICloud on Mac OS X

To set up iCloud on a Mac, there s very little you need to do. As long as you have OS X 10.7.2 or higher, the iCloud software is built right into the operating system. As a result, you don t need to install anything.

Here s what you need to know:

    • To access your iCloud settings, click on the Apple menu in the top left corner and choose System Preferences .
    • You may already be signed in to your iCloud account. If not, sign in here with your Apple ID/iTunes account.
    • Check the box next to each iCloud feature you want to enable.

How to Set up ICloud on Windows

Unlike the Mac, Windows doesn t come with iCloud built in, so you need to download the iCloud Control Panel software.

Here s what you need to do:

    • Go to and download the iCloud Control Panel software from Apple.
    • Install the software.
    • Once that s done, launch the iCloud Control Panel.
    • Sign in with your Apple ID/iTunes account.
    • Check the box next to each iCloud feature you want to enable.

Tip: To learn more about the features of iCloud while deciding if you want them enabled, check out step 5 of this article.

Computer Security Major and College Degree Program Information #computer #security #degree

Computer Security Major and College Degree Program Information

    Essential Information

Studies in computer security are often a concentration within the larger discipline of computer science, though there are some stand-alone programs at the undergraduate level. Those interested in a degree specifically in computer security typically earn an Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science. Students are trained in the use of firewalls, practices in computer forensics and applications in network security. Other computer courses addressing programming, operating systems and Web design are also taken, in addition to general education classes. These studies can prepare graduates to pursue entry-level careers as security specialists or consultants.

Associate of Science in Computer Security

This degree can also be referred to as an Associate of Science in Network Security or Information Security. These 2-year degree programs teach students the basic skills behind recognizing and preventing computer and computer network security breaches. Math courses are also emphasized in the curriculum so students can learn to analyze and interpret the large amounts of computer data generated by network security checks. Core courses may cover the following topics:

    • The structure of firewalls
    • Introductory network security
    • Computer security law and ethics
    • Computer forensics
    • CGI/Perl programming
    • Network security design

Find schools that offer these popular programs

    • Information Systems Security
    • Networking Management
    • Systems Administration
    • Webmaster and Multimedia Management

Bachelor of Science in Computer Security

This 4-year degree program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which computer security is compromised and the methods of preventing computer security attacks. In addition to the core computer security courses, students need to enroll in a specified number of electives in subjects such as public speaking, English, math and the life sciences. Other requirements may include study of a foreign language. Core security topics include:

    • Information security analysis
    • Basic operating systems
    • E-commerce security
    • Systems analysis and design
    • Calculus
    • Advanced computer forensics

    Popular Career Options

The field of computer security is developing at a rapid pace due to the presence of hackers, malware and other information systems threats. Employment opportunities for computer security specialists include the following positions:

    • Network security coordinator
    • Data security specialist
    • Internet security specialist
    • Computer forensics consultant
    • Information systems officer

    Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, ) classifies computer security specialists under the larger category of information security analysts. Employment in this field is projected to grow by 18% between 2014 and 2024, which the BLS considers much faster than average for all occupations. In May 2015, the median salary for workers in this category was $90,120.

    Continuing Education Information

Associate’s degree graduates may choose to pursue computer security certification, which is offered by many software companies and computer manufacturers. These certification programs allow professionals to earn a credential that demonstrates their skills with computer security technology. For example, Cisco offers four levels of network security certification. Graduates may also choose to pursue a 4-year degree; many associate’s degree programs in computer security are designed to allow the student to continue his or her studies in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.

A bachelor’s degree in computer security is the terminal degree for many of the career paths involved with computer security. Students may decide to continue their studies in pursuit of a graduate degree in a related technological field in order to seek a management or executive position. Also, working professionals in the computer security field will find it necessary to take supplementary certification courses offered by computer manufacturers and software companies in order to stay on top of the rapidly changing computer security industry.

The path to a computer security career begins with a degree program at the associate’s or bachelor’s degree level. These programs prepare students to pursue in-demand jobs protecting computer systems and networks from cyber threats.

    Interior Design

Create spaces people love to live, work, and play in

Interior design is more than just arranging furniture. It has evolved into a multifaceted profession dealing with complete environments that not only please, but enhance the health and safety of the user. Like other interior design programs, we encourage creative vision and develop your design skills—but creativity alone wont make you a successful working interior designer. At FIT, we emphasize the practical skills you need to get your project done. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to envision great spaces — and know how to build them, too.

FIT’s Interior Design program has been preparing students for success for more than 50 years. This rigorous, multidisciplinary program combines the academic study of the history and theory of interior design with practical, hands-on projects. You’ll collaborate with leading practitioners in New York City, the design capital of the world. In classes taught by industry professionals, you’ll learn drafting techniques, computer modeling, lighting, and materials and methods, with an emphasis on sustainability and user health and safety.

    • FIT’s Interior Design programs are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
    • Courses meet National Certification for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Exam and New York State certification (Certified Interior Designer) eligibility requirements.
    • With about 400 students, FIT’s Interior Design program is the largest of its kind in New York City.
    • Professional-level facilities include a lighting laboratory, design graphics reproduction center, and model-making shop.
    • Projects cover a wide range of interior spaces, including residences, hotels and restaurants, stores, historic settings, hospitals, and supportive housing.

    In this program, you’ll:

    • work with New York interior designers, lighting and graphic designers, and architects in internships at top firms such as Gensler, Interior Architects, and the Rockwell Group.
    • network with industry professionals and work with fellow students on Interior Design Club projects.
    • practice your skills on class projects that include residential, corporate, retail, hospitality, and institutional settings.
