Cutting Your Kids’ Schooling Costs

Whenever the school season is just around the corner, there’s only one thing that parents are thinking about – the impending costs. Education is a primary right and a pertinent need of every child but it can become very costly. Availing of scholarships and education grants for your children is the best way to get them through schooling. But of course, only a small percentage of children can be given these privileges.

There are simple and effective measures that parents can employ in cutting the costs of their children’s schooling, especially during the back-to-school season. Most often, these measures are often taken for granted, but don’t miss out!

Organize and Save

Keep an inventory of your children’s school supplies and keep it organized. If you are not organized, you will be spending more money on replenishing your supplies. Small things like pencils and crayons may not cost too much, but if you replenish your supplies unnecessarily, you are losing valuable money.

You should also try involving the kids when making the inventory. This will give them a sense of ownership for their things and would know where to take and put their things.

Tax Holidays

Tax holidays are often offered by many states during the back-to-school season. Price ceilings will be put on different school gears. You might want to do a little research and ask about the schedule and the details of the tax holidays in your area.

Bulk Buying

It’s a basic economic principle – the more you buy, the more you save . Well, this is applicable if you are buying a specific item which you will really need in the near future. In buying pencils, for example, you might want to buy a box rather than buying one for each of your kids. Face it, you will be needing to replenish these after some time, so might as well avail of the lower price by buying in bulk.

Transportation

You might want to consider buying your child a bicycle for him to bring to school. This, of course, is not always feasible. Finding a cheap and safe way to bring your children to school daily is an important thing. Car pools and school transportation services are options that you can look at.

Snacks

Whenever you have the time and energy to prepare food for your children, do so. You will not only be saving on the pocket money that you will give to them but you are also secured that your children are eating healthy and safe meals.

Getting your children through school is a hard task and a costly one. Saving money through practical and simple means can assist you in this endeavor. The benefits will eventually add up to bring a brighter future to your children.

It Can Cost More to Fly to Hartford Than Barcelona. What Airlines Consider in Setting Prices

  • Chart: Compare Ticket Prices on Popular Routes

The fares travelers pay typically have little relation to how far you fly, even though airline costs are largely dependent on the length of a flight. Long trips often cost less than short trips. Flights of the same time and distance can have radically different prices.

David Dugan’s defense company paid US Airways $1,358 for a non-refundable coach, round-trip ticket this week to Hartford from Washington. And yet Mr. Dugan had just bought $900 round-trip tickets for a family trip from Washington to Spain.

It’s crazy, he said. We’re going to Europe and it’s cheaper than going to Hartford.

Airline pricing is enormously complex, often confounding and angering travelers with prices that change several times a day, carry an almanac full of rules, restrictions and penalties and have huge disparities in the price of a trip in different markets or even just different days.

The price you pay for a ticket is driven by a number of variables: competition, types of passengers, the route and operating costs. But the biggest factor, by far, is whether discount airlines fly in a market. Low-cost carriers often set the price in markets because competitors feel compelled to match that price or risk losing customers and flying empty seats. And when they aren’t there, big airlines behave radically differently when setting prices.

It’s the number of competitors and the quality of the competition, said airfare analyst and consultant Bob Harrell.

The kinds of travelers in a market heavily influence what prices airlines charge as well. If the route has lots of business travelers—like Hartford to Washington—then airlines set prices high knowing customers will be less sensitive to higher prices. If the route is populated by price-sensitive travelers —think Florida cities and Las Vegas—then airlines set prices low in order to fill up planes.

Airlines are just saying, ‘What is the most I can get for that seat?’ said Bradley Seitz, president of Topaz International Ltd. which tracks and audits airfares for major corporations.

On the Hartford-Washington route, what they can get is a lot: The average price in the first quarter was $648 round-trip, or 99 cents per mile, according to the Department of Transportation, making that route one of the most expensive in the country per-mile. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines LUV 2.53 % charges far lower prices between Hartford and Baltimore, about 40 miles north of Washington, so the average ticket price was $236, or 42 cents per mile.

When Andrew Kowal made a trip to Washington from Hartford for meetings at the Capitol, his corporate travel department asked if he would fly to Baltimore instead. It made little sense to him to rent a car or buy a round-trip Amtrak ticket to get to Washington instead of simply flying where you want to go.

Think about the resources used if I went to Baltimore, he said. How could that be cheaper?

Business travelers pay more than twice as much per mile, on average, to fly from New York to London as they do from New York to Los Angeles, according to Topaz. In the second quarter, the average round-trip from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Los Angeles International Airport was $1,088, while the average ticket from JFK to London’s Heathrow Airport was $3,610, Topaz found in checking ticket purchases for companies.

Not only are business routes more expensive, but the London-bound travelers are more likely to buy business-class seats than the L.A. fliers. It’s more expensive, too, for airlines to operate internationally, and international ticket taxes are higher.

But the reality is that big airlines that fly to both Los Angeles and London from New York face low-fare airline competition on the domestic route, but not the international route, and so they charge far more. Bigger competitors often match prices of discount carriers like Virgin America, which had 20% of all passengers flying between JFK and LAX in the first quarter, according to consulting firm Oliver Wyman Group’s PlaneStats database.

And when there’s not low-fare competition, prices soar. The most-expensive average domestic ticket in the first quarter was $786 for round-trip flights between San Francisco and Philadelphia, according to the DOT. That 2,521-mile route is dominated by United and US Airways, who are competitors but also partners in the Star Alliance. Fly to Boston from San Francisco—183 miles farther by air than Philadelphia—and you paid an average $296 less round-trip in the first quarter, according to DOT. The difference: JetBlue Airways JBLU 3.23 % has 17% of the San Francisco-Boston market, but none of the San Francisco-Philadelphia market.

High fixed costs do make short routes more expensive, per mile. But airport costs like terminal rents and landing fees and even the expense of buying or leasing jets, pale in comparison to the two biggest expenses at airlines: labor and fuel. Both go higher as flights get longer.

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs – CBS DC #fly

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs

Spring and summer travel could become just a dream for many travelers as gas prices affect airfare. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON , D.C. (CBSDC)   For many Americans, the lamentation of rising gas costs is nothing new. It’s an everyday reality to see prices at the pump going up.

But now, those looking to get away from it all may encounter further troubles doing so, thanks to gas price hikes that have the potential to curb holiday travel and drive up the cost of plane tickets.

Travel buffs are just beginning to solidify their spring break and summer vacation plans. As they do, comparison shopping may show that such hikes have already started to take their toll on the cost of airfare.

[R]ising jet fuel costs put significant cost pressure on the airline industry, Steve Lott, vice present of communications for Airlines for America told CBSDC. Regarding fuel, it was the airline industry’s largest expense in 2011, representing 35 percent of total costs. In 2011, the price of jet fuel reached a record high of $3.00 per gallon for the year.

He continued, It is even higher for the first two months of 2012.

Cynthia Brough, director of public relations for AAA, said that as jet fuel costs go up in tandem with gas prices, the consumer could expect to pay more for their flight.

As with any business, if [an airline] pays more for fuel and operational costs, they need to pass that cost on to the consumer, she told CBSDC. There have been [similar] effects in the past.

Though the illegality of price signaling prevents airlines from discussing numbers, Allison Steinberg, senior media analyst for JetBlue Airways, told CBSDC that there are steps taken to try to stave off the potential effects of rising gas prices.

We continue to believe the best tools for managing the impact of fuel expense are operating a fuel-efficient fleet and using efficient operating procedures, such as single engine taxi, she said in an email. In addition, we continue to manage our fuel hedge portfolio as a form of insurance to help mitigate price volatility and protect JetBlue against severe spikes in oil prices.

It may take more extreme measures for airlines to keep up, though. Lott added that, from the year 2000 to the middle of 2011, jet fuel prices rose 268 percent. In that same time period, domestic airfare costs reportedly rose 10 percent.

Fares over the past decade have not kept pace with costs or the price of fuel, he noted.

According to information provided by the AAA National Office to CBSDC, some airlines have already taken such action, replacing larger jets with smaller, regional aircrafts that are more fuel-efficient in nature.

Travel website Expedia.com confirmed that prices have gone up for flights in recent history. However, they additionally stated that ticket sales have increased as well.

Despite the recent rise in gas prices, Expedia sees people still taking to the skies, Jeremy Boore, travel analyst for Expedia.com, said to CBSDC. With regards to flights, on some of the most popular routes, Expedia sees ticket growth outpacing average ticket price growth.

According to their collected data, tickets between Los Angeles International and John F. Kennedy International Airports in the past 28 days have gone up in price by 1.7%, with sales up 14.1% in comparison with the previous 28-day period.

Other popular routes saw similar rises in both cost and consumption.

[T]here is still demand for travel, all things considered, Boore added.

All the same, consumer surveys and data collected last year indicate that some travelers did make the decision to avoid air travel, instead opting to go by car.

American drivers will still have to pay more to vacation, however, statistics offered by the U.S. Energy Information Administration show that, for the week starting Feb. 27, gasoline prices per gallon averaged out at $3.71.

That amount reflects a rise of 13 cents from the previous week, and 33 cents from the same week in 2011.

The past month has also been statistically more expensive at the pump than last February, according to numbers collected by AAA. The data collected and presented by their Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows that on March 1, 2012, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.74. The same time last year, Americans paid just $3.39 per gallon.

The increase in cost can be attributed to a number of things, including dwindling supplies and increasing demand as summer ticks closer and the politics surrounding crude oil acquisition, especially in the Middle East.

Avery Ash, manager of regulatory affairs for AAA, said that gas prices do tend to rise slightly as March begins and winter draws to a close. But the rise seen recently is atypical in size, due to geopolitical influences.

Last year we saw escalating tensions in Libya and northern Africa, and that uncertainty impacted the market most specifically, the removal of Libyan crude from the market, he told CBSDC, adding that this year s recent tensions in Iran have taken their toll as well. This time of year we do see some upward movement, but the last two years have broken the historical norm in the magnitude of the increases.

A combination of pent-up vacation desires and years of experience with balancing personal budgets has helped American travelers enjoy some time away all the same, even if they had to change their approach.

[Travelers] did … budget more wisely, by perhaps visiting national parks for free as opposed to another venue of higher cost, Brough said. They changed the type of travel, but they still traveled.

But as Nancy White, who also directs AAA public relations, observed in their end-of-year holiday travel forecasts from 2011, many Americans will prioritize travel over other expenses, especially if family and friends are involved in the trip.

The heartstrings outweigh the purse strings, she said, quoting a colleague. People will do whatever they need to do to spend time with loved ones, making cuts in other areas of spending to accommodate travel plans.

Financial Case for Moving to the Cloud #cloud #computing #costs, #smarter

#

The Financial Case for Moving to the Cloud

Many organizations are slow to adopt cloud computing due to confusion around the financial impact of its implementation and management.

Despite the hype, the uptake of cloud computing as a solution has not been as rapid as first anticipated, in part because of the confusion created around the financial benefits, said Sanil Solanki. research director at Gartner. While it s said to be cheaper than on-premises, cloud gets push-back from the finance function because it increases operating expenditure (opex) costs. IT departments let finance take the lead on this decision, and this stalemate is rarely broken.

Ahead of the Gartner IT, Financial, Procurement Asset Management Summit 2015, September 21-22, in London, U.K.. Mr Solanki, said that while using cloud computing does increase opex costs, CIOs should consider other financial factors before making a decision.

CIOs who have a rounded view of the financial impact of cloud are more likely to have progressive discussions with their finance business partners about when and how to deploy cloud services. Understanding the outcomes cloud computing can support is crucial for IT leaders when having these discussions (see Figure 1). Adopting the cloud can save significant amounts of money, which ultimately is the lifeblood of any business.

Figure 1.Gartner s Definition of Cloud Computing

Gartner has outlined the positive and negative financial considerations of cloud computing.

Three positive financial aspects of cloud:

  • Greater cost agility withinfrastructure as a service — Cloud services have a high degree of cost variability, so expenses can quickly go down if demand for services is reduced.
  • Increased retained cash — By using cloud/on-demand services, CIOs do not have to invest upfront to buy IT infrastructure via regular refresh cycles.
  • Reduced opportunity costs — Opportunity costs are defined as the value foregone by pursuing a certain course of action. By choosing to use cloud/on-demand, a company can free up cash to invest in other parts of the business.

Three negative financial aspects of cloud solutions:

  • Less cost agility withsoftware as a service(SaaS) — SaaS providers are promising cost agility as one of the benefits; in reality, however, this is only working one way — up. Clients can end up paying more if they use more licenses, but not less if they don t use as many.
  • Higher subscription fees — The total cost of ownership may be lower over five years, but the subscription fees are more than the perpetual licenses after year three or four; therefore, the savings need to be significant and ongoing to make cost lower after more than five to seven years.
  • High switching costs with SaaS — The cost to get data out and bring it back on-premises is high.

If you use a travel agent you are probably aware that they work from computers that are tied in with major airlines and hotel chains; they won’t waste their time searching for discounted air fares, hotel or car deals for you. The result is that you wind up paying the travel agent a fee while overpaying for your travel and hotel expenses.

If you allow your people to book for themselves you can be certain of two things: they are wasting their time doing something that could best be done by someone else and they are not booking the most cost effective airlines, hotels and cars because to do so takes much more time and effort than they should be spending on this chore.

MyInHouseTravel.com is not a traditional travel agency. We have structured our organization to function as if it were a part of your own company.

Cost of Central Heating – Estimates and Prices Paid #central #heating,

#

Central Heating Cost

In a central heating system, heat is generated in one location and blown to the rest of the house through ducts. The heat source can be a furnace. a boiler that uses hot water and a coil to warm air or a heat pump (which may be paired with a furnace in colder climates); this heat source is typically located in a basement, garage or utility room.

  • In new house construction or as part of an extensive remodeling project where the walls are already torn open, installing a central heating system with either a gas furnace or a heat pump typically costs $10,000-$20,000 or more, depending on the size of the house, the complexity of the system (such as the number registers that release heat or the number of independent heating zones) and the type of unit. High-efficiency gas furnaces usually cost $500-$1,500 more than a standard model.
  • In a house with existing usable ductwork, replacing a gas furnace with another gas furnace can cost $1,700-$4,000 for basic installation of a standard-efficiency unit or $5,000-$7,000 for a more complex installation in an area with high labor rates; and $2,500-$6,000 for basic installation of a high-efficiency gas furnace or $7,000-$12,000 for a more complex project. If all the ductwork must be replaced or added inside intact walls, it can cost $2,700-$12,000 or more to install gas central heating with a standard-efficiency gas furnace and $3,500-$22,000 or more with a high-efficiency unit.
  • With existing usable ductwork, replacing an oil-fired furnace typically costs $2,000-$5,000 for a basic installation, but it can be $6,000-$10,000 or more for complex installations. If it’s necessary to add or completely replace ductwork, it can cost $3,000-$20,000 or more for a central heating system using an oil-fired furnace.
  • With existing usable ductwork, a replacement heat pump typically costs $2,000-$5,000 for an air-source heat pump for an average-size home in a moderate climate; $2,500-$5,500 for a dual-fuel air-source heat pump that works with a natural gas or propane furnace under a single control system (for colder climates); or $5,000-$10,000 or more for both an electric heat pump and the fossil-fuel furnace). If ductwork must be added or completely replaced, a central heating system using a heat pump can cost $3,000-$20,000 or more.

Related articles: Furnace. Central Heating. Radiant Floor Heating. Electric Baseboard Heater

What should be included:

  • It typically takes a day or two to replace the heat source in an existing central heating system, and a week or more to install a new central heating system, depending on the size and layout of the house and the complexity of the system. A replacement project should include removal and proper disposal of the old unit.

Additional costs:

  • A building/mechanical permit is usually required to replace a furnace. Permit and inspection fees are typically about $50-$300, but can cost more in some locations. Many contractors include getting the proper permits and inspections as part of the installation process, but might bill for these fees separately.
  • Older ductwork might contain asbestos, creating unpredictable additional costs for asbestos removal .

Discounts:

  • It might be possible to get a low-cost loan, rebate or tax credit for installing an energy-efficient central heating system. The database of State Incentives for Renewables & Energy Efficiency [1 ] tracks energy-efficiency incentives from utilities and from state, federal and local government agencies. For example, utility companies in Wisconsin [2 ] pay a $125 “reward” for installing a furnace with a 90% AFUE rating and $275 for a 95% model.
  • Try to schedule work in the spring or fall, when contractors typically have fewer emergency calls for heating or air conditioning work. It can be easier to get the work done and to get the lowest rates.

Shopping for central heating:

  • The Environmental Protection Agency lists tips for hiring a heating and cooling contractor [3 ] .
  • Referrals are available from the North American Technician Excellence certification program [4 ] and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America [5 ] .
  • Request and check references; ask about length and type of experience; and be sure they are properly bonded, insured and licensed [6 ]. Check for complaints with the Better Business Bureau [7 ] .

Our hydro heat system was probably fine for a while more but the 19 year old original installation air conditioner (old type coolant) had developed a leak in part that is inside the air handler. Because the hydro was also 19 years old and had sprung a leak before, we decided to replace both. The price noted is for a 13 seer air and 8 whatever e heat rating thing is and included a completely new system except the ducts, and some electrical work to bring it up to current code (new shut off circuit at the system). A 3 man crew plus 2 electricians spent most of the day on the job.

Efficiency: 95% Furn

Was provided three bids by AB May. The first is for a Trane system combination gas and heatpump. It was for a 95% furnace and a 16 seer 3 ton heatpump. The unit was also a two stage for further efficiency. This included install, humidifier, ionizing air filter which is reusable, cleaning of the existing ductwork for mold etc, programmable thermostat, and a 10 year parts and labor warranty as long as they come out and check the system twice a year costing $150.00 each year. The system would qualify for a $750.00 discount from the electric company, $225.00 discount from the Gas Company, and $500.00 worth of tax incentives. The price was $12,024 after rebates.
The second bid was for an identical system except from their house brand Everest which is a re-badged Goodman system. Still would qualify for the rebates same BTU and Seer rating. This was priced at $8,206 after rebates.
They also provided a bid for the most basic Trane system. This included a 95% furnace still, but only a 13 Seer single stage heat pump. The system only qualified for the $225.00 Gas Company discount. This was priced at $6,125 after the rabate.

Heating contractor had quoted an excellent price on a prior Rheem furnace job and showed very good followup, so I did not quote against him when he installed the new Rheem furnace in the main house. Just want to ce=heck the overall price to make sure that he is not getting all he benefits of the 30% tax credit and not me. It’s a Rheem RGRM 10, took out old furnace and re built sheet metal to plenum to attach to new one. Installed all. No new ducts, Used existing extra flue. Crew of 2 1/2, worked a little more than 1 1/2 days. How does the going dealer cost for a Rheem 100k but 2-stage 95% compare to cost of labor? Very roughly? Are we close to $5K.

Average Insurance Costs For Auto, Home, Renters and Health

Chapters in this page:

When shopping for any type of insurance policy, finding the “average cost” may be the first thing that comes to mind. While such a number may be useful in some respects, especially if you are comparing rates, it is not the most accurate method of gauging an appropriate price.

The average cost of insurance reflects what all consumers actually spend on insurance, meaning those with the cheapest rates are pooled with those with the most expensive premiums, and those who buy minimum coverage are included with those who buy extensive protection.

If you decide to compare the rates you’ve gathered with average costs, it may be more useful to look at the average cost within your state. Comparing your rates with the nationwide average, or with the average price from a different state, could be misleading due to varying risk factors. Insurance rates are determined by looking at several risk factors, which include (but are not limited to) where you live, your age and your claims record. Factors affecting rates for group health insurance policies include the health and ages of members within the group.

Car Insurance: Expenditure by State

According to data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the average cost of car insurance in the U.S. was $795 in 2007. When compared to average costs by state, however, it’s clear that location can make a big difference. For example:

The average car insurance price assumes that all insured vehicles include liability coverage, the minimum auto insurance requirement in most states, but does not reflect the total of liability as well as collision and comprehensive coverage — because not all auto policies include all three coverage types.

The NAIC reports that states with greater premiums tend to be highly urban — with higher wages and price levels — and possess a higher traffic density. Other factors that affect the cost of insurance include: auto insurance laws, labor costs for repairs, car-theft rates and liability coverage requirements.

These are the averages, get your personalized auto rate by clicking here: auto insurance quotes .

Home Insurance: Average Premiums

The cost of a home insurance policy is based on several factors, including the amount of insurance you purchase, the perils covered by your policy, the type of property you insure, and the limits and deductibles you choose as a policyholder.

Homeowners insurance rates, which are influenced by local construction costs, vary widely around the country. Your degree of exposure to natural disasters, such as tornadoes and forest fires, also affect your premium price.

According to the NAIC, the national average for home insurance coverage for a single family home, was $822 in 2007. As with auto insurance, average home insurance prices vary widely from state to state:

The mean insurance rate for home insurance represented the most commonly purchased coverage, the HO-3 policy, which provides coverage for buildings, personal property (contents) and liability.

Looking for a customized rate? Click here: home insurance quotes .

If you rent, you should consider purchasing renters insurance. The average premium price differences are less dramatic in state-to-state comparisons for renters insurance. For instance, average annual premiums for renters insurance in 2007 include:

Group Health Insurance: For Individuals and Families

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Benefits for 1999 to 2009, the average annual cost of health insurance coverage, as part of a group plan, is:

The survey included 3,188 randomly selected, public and private companies having three or more employees. The average cost for family coverage reflected a 5% increase from 2008 to 2009; however, the individual premium price did not indicate a significant jump. Factors such as the the group’s location, industry, and health and ages of the group’s members affect group health insurance premiums.

Pool Cleaning Cost

In-ground backyard pools require regular service including skimming the pool’s surface, vacuuming the pool floor, brushing the walls, emptying baskets and the filter trap, and backwashing the circulation system, according to Better Homes and Gardens. The water must also be tested for sanitization and to maintain a balanced pH level.

  • Once a week pool cleaners cost $75-$165 per month. based on four visits.
  • Do-it-yourself pool cleaning runs $20-$100 per month for chemicals during the summer after initial purchase of pool tools including a vacuum head and hose from $50. and a maintenance kit with a wall brush, leaf skimmer, test kits and telescopic pole for around $60 .

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs – CBS DC #buy

Decoding Airline Ticket Costs #cheap #hotels #and #flights
