In the business for more than 15 years, Curry specializes in distinctive small-ship excursions (all of which she personally vets) to adventure-focused destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galápagos Islands, and Hawaii.

Best for: families, couples/honeymooners

Extras: Curry’s role at Adventure Life includes negotiating contracts with cruise companies, so you can count on her to secure the best-possible prices.

Other expertise: South America

Large and Small-Ship Ocean Cruises

Scott Kertes

Travelers who have attempted to make sense of a cruise trip’s fine print—from which restaurants you can access at an all-inclusive rate and how much Wi-Fi costs to what’s considered a premium drink—will understand the value of an advisor like Kertes. Not only has he sailed on nearly every cruise line but he’s intimately familiar with all of those pesky details.

Best for: culture buffs, nature lovers

Extras: Traveling with a company or large group? Kertes is an expert at building theme cruises. He’s also worked with dozens of philanthropic organizations to create fund-raising cruise programs.

Other expertise: Group cruising

Mary Ann Ramsey

As president and owner of Betty Maclean Travel, Ramsey thinks of herself as a lifelong partner with her clients. She addresses their long-term travel goals and keeps files on what’s happening in their bucket-list destinations. Since luxury cruising is popular among her clientele, she spends a lot of time on boats, keeping up on the best staterooms and onboard experiences.

Best for: multigenerational families, luxury seekers

Extras: For each port of call, Ramsey creates a personalized itinerary—complete with driver and guide—that might include a cooking class in a traditional Venetian household, say, or a private tour of the monastery in Petra, Jordan.

Ruth Turpin

Turpin has a knack for pairing clients with the right cruise, a skill she has honed since founding her agency more than 35 years (and some 160 boat trips) ago. She’s especially well versed in Mediterranean cruising options.

Best for: luxury seekers, couples/honeymooners, solo travelers

Extras: Thanks to her partnerships with so many cruise directors, Turpin is able to arrange special, hard-to-secure onboard surprises, such as decorating staterooms for a honeymoon, private dinners with customized wine pairings, and a butler-delivered birthday cake and balloons.

Other expertise: River cruising

Travel cruise agents: How to choose the right cruise for you,

Travel cruise agents: How to choose the right cruise for you

They’ve been on dozens of cruises, sampled the food and seen the shows — these are the cruise secrets only travel agents know.

ESCAPE: Cruise Special, October 1 – Concierge Verandah. Picture: CLIA/Supplied Source:Supplied

So you’ve decided to take a cruise. Good for you. You’ll have a blast.

What do you want from your cruise? Fine wining and dining? Top-drawer entertainment? Relaxing spa treatments at sea? Exotic ports-of-call?

And how much are you prepared to spend? Where do you want to go? What do you want to see and do? Big ship? Little ship? River cruise?

You can see how tricky it gets when you start drilling down on the specifics. That s why God invented cruise agents. These intrepid souls have done the hard yards. They ve been on dozens of cruises. They ve sampled the fare, tried the waterslides and been to the shows. They ve walked the walls of Dubrovnik, swum with turtles in New Caledonia and photographed blue-footed boobies in the Gal pagos Islands. Well, someone had to do it. You can just be jealous of them like their friends or you can tap into their expertise.

According to Marion Bunnik, product director and joint owner of cruise and tour specialist Bunnik Tours, cruise agents should get to know their clients before making a recommendation.

I would never just reach for a brochure. You don t want an order taker, you want a consultant who will do their best meet your expectations, she says. Of course we need to know who is going, how many, whether it is a family cruise that sort of thing. But most importantly, we need to know your interests. What you like to do, where you want to go, what excites you.

Jean Summers, director of sales at Clean Cruising agrees.

My big question is always Why are you cruising? says Jean. I want to know what sort of hotels and service levels you are used to. I ask about previous holiday experiences, both good and bad. But everything comes back to the Why? Is there a significant birthday, do you want time in the sun, lots of ship-time? What do you want to do on shore?

Are you interested in Antarctica? Picture: Silversea Source:Supplied

Don t be afraid to overreach. You never know what the cruise agent might be able to do. Part of their job is to manage expectations. Marion says a good cruise agent will think outside the square or ship and create a fulsome holiday experience. She says it is not unusual for clients to end up booking a trip far different to what they originally had in mind.

We do a lot pre- and post-cruise touring. For example, we can combine Croatia and the Baltic, the Arctic and Norway or Central and South America. If someone wants the best of South America, we might arrange island hopping in the Galapagos and a tour of Peru before a cruise from Santiago in Chile to Buenos Aires and Rio and a tour of Iguazu Falls, she says.

OK Marion, so what If I said I like say, cycling, Asian food and archeology?

Oh that s no problem, she says. Vietnam is beautiful for cycling. You could tour Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cruise around South-East Asia. And maybe add a river cruise on the Mekong and see Laos as well.

So what about the cruise line? How do cruise agents match a client with a ship?

People may have a particular cruise line or ship in mind, says Marion. But if they are open to alternatives, the choice of ship may depend on where they want to go and what they want on board. For example, Royal Caribbean is a good choice if you have children while couples might prefer Holland America Line, Celebrity or Silversea Cruises. It often comes down to their budget as some lines are more expensive than others.

Jean also believes the choice of ship is critical. And it might not be on the high seas at all. While larger cruise ships will suit those who want a bigger, multidimensional experience with plenty to do, river cruises provide a more intimate encounter. They typically host around 120-160 guests and don t have the theme-park attractions that lure family groups.

River cruises tend to overnight more often in port and this might suit people who want to dine out or experience the night-life shore-side. A new Uniworld river cruise product called U is aimed at the up to 45-year-old market with no children. These ships will typically leave port at two or three in the morning so you can have a fun night in town, cruise through the night and arrive in the next port at around ten in the morning. We re also very confident putting people on APT cruises. They deliver on their promises and we know our clients are going to have a fantastic time.

Jean also stresses the importance of travel insurance. She has seen literally tragic consequences because of inadequate cover.

Travel insurance should be at the very top of people s checklist and organised before they pay for anything else, she says. Research is crucial you absolutely must know what you are covered for. Cruise agents should know which policies are suitable.

How to Choose Your Cruise, Travel Leisure, cruise travel agents.#Cruise #travel

How to Choose Your Cruise

Follow these 10 steps to ensure smooth sailing.

There are more than 160 ships in the fleets of the 24 major cruise lines—and more than 7,500 itineraries, from Alaska to Zanzibar. So how do you decide which one most suits your style?Evaluate your options using these simple guidelines:

  1. Where to go Decide on the destination first, the ship second. Alaskan and Caribbean cruises have long been mainstays, but cruise lines are adding itineraries to unexpected places: Asia, the Indian Ocean, South America. “South America is a big player this year,” says Anne Morgan Scully, of McCabe World Travel in McLean, Virginia. “But Dubai is off the charts.”

Next, look at the specifics—with Alaskan cruises, for example, ships tend to follow two routes. Inside Passage itineraries run round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver and call in southern Alaskan ports like Juneau and Skagway; Gulf of Alaska itineraries, which sail farther north, are typically one-way trips from Vancouver to Whittier or Seward, or the reverse.

  • When to go Shoulder seasons can offer bargains, and may be even more appealing than high season: a mild fall day can be more enjoyable than baking under the August sun in the Mediterranean. Alaska’s popularity with families means that going in May and September (when children are in school) often translates into fewer visitors—and better deals. Fewer people can also mean more chances to see black bears and humpback whales up close.

  • Which line to book Select the cruise line, and the fellow passengers, that best match your personality. “This is crucial for the first time,” advises Anne Halsey-Smith of Gayle Gillies Travel in Rancho Santa Fe, California. “It will make or break your experience. If you aren’t matched to the line, you probably won’t cruise again.” Some have dress codes and assigned seating times for meals. Some, like Princess Cruises, are more kid-friendly. Norwegian Cruise Line is more casual than other lines and doesn’t have assigned dining times. Holland America’s offerings are more traditionally geared toward baby boomers. Finally, lines like Crystal and Regent are more upscale and, in turn, more expensive. A travel agent can help you make sense of the different options, and on the message boards of Cruisecritic.com you can hear directly from passengers.

  • What it costs Don’t look at the daily rate for a stateroom and then simply multiply by the number of nights you’ll be at sea. Remember to factor in airfare to and from the originating port, the costs of incidentals such as alcohol (unless the ship is all-inclusive), and shore excursions. A helicopter ride over the glaciers of Alaska can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it can also add as much as $1,000 to your final bill.

  • Beat the rush Many cruise lines give discounts for booking far in advance. “It’s an issue of supply and demand,” Scully says. “As bookings come in, cruise fares go up in the most popular regions, like Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean.” It’s never too soon to start planning your cruise.

  • Ship tips Size matters. The size of the ship can dictate the itinerary. Smaller ships, like those operated by Cruise West (the largest of which carries only 138 passengers) and SeaDream Yachts, can dock at smaller ports and offer a more personalized experience. They are often best suited for nature-oriented cruises to Antarctica, the Galápagos, and the Sea of Cortés. The downside: entertainment and dining options are often more limited.

  • Cabin splurge Consider your itinerary when deciding whether to reserve a balcony stateroom. For a repositioning cruise across the Atlantic, when there will be nothing to see from your balcony but the open ocean for days, it may not matter. But on Alaskan and Mediterranean cruises, it’s all about the views. And in Alaska, remember to book a cabin on the starboard (right) side of the ship on a northbound cruise and on the port (left) side of the ship on southbound itineraries so you’ll have a view of the coastline.

  • Arrive early—and stay on after your cruise First, if you don’t book your flight through the cruise line, your ship won’t wait if it’s delayed. As canceled and delayed flights have become commonplace, it’s wise to arrive at your starting port at least a day before you are scheduled to set sail. Second, cruise extensions are an increasingly popular option. You can cap off a Crystal sailing, for example, with a safari organized by the line—with fewer hassles and less expenses than on a separate tour. Holland America and Princess Cruises offer luxury railway and lodge trips for passengers in Alaska.

  • Before you board Don’t waste time waiting in line after you’ve pulled out of port. There are enough activities to make the most adventurous cruiser happy, but popular shore excursions often sell out. Be sure to plan your onboard activities early. Spas on ships have a limited number of treatment rooms; book your massages and facials in advance, if possible. Also, ask if there are discounts for booking treatments on days in port.

What is the Right Travel Insurance for a Cruise? #amigo #travel

    #cruise travel insurance
    #

    Insuring Your Cruise

Travel insurance is particularly important for cruisers, because cruising carries its own unique set of concerns that may not be shared by the average traveler. For example, because of the nature of cruising, the possibility of missing some leg of your trip — such as the ship’s departure from one of its ports — is somewhat higher than it is when you take a non-stop flight from Point A to Point B. Getting appropriate medical care in an emergency at sea is also a consideration that needs to be factored into making decisions about insuring a cruise. These, among many others, make a good case for at least investigating travel insurance when you plan to take a cruise.

However, it’s important to be cautious about where you get that insurance. Typically, it’s most advisable to buy travel insurance for your cruise from a third party source — not from the cruise line itself or from a booking site. These types of travel insurance policies tend to be fairly limited in their coverage, may not contain important benefits you need for your individual comfort and safety, and often are written in a way that is more likely to benefit the cruise line than it is to benefit you. When you decide on a trusted third-party source for your insurance, make sure to find out what type of coverage is available to you for the following concerns:

    Medical Care

If you should unexpectedly fall ill or become injured while you’re on your cruise, you’ll need some sort of medical insurance coverage to offset the expense of the medical care you receive. Many cruisers don’t know that their home medical insurance provider may not cover any care they receive outside of their home country, or may cover only a portion of the costs. Those on Medicare should be particularly concerned with this type of benefit, as Medicare does not cover any kind of medical care outside of the United States.

    Emergency Medical Evacuation

While rare, emergency medical evacuations are a very real possibility for cruisers. Whether the emergency is severe enough to require an air rescue from the ship, or whether it involves emergency transport from the nearest port of call to an on-shore medical facility, the costs can be prohibitive if not covered by insurance. Those who are particularly concerned about the possible quality of medical care in an unknown area of the world may want to consider looking into the optional Hospital of Choice benefit as well.

    Baggage Loss or Baggage Delay

Between airlines, ships, and ports of call, there are plenty of opportunities for cruisers to misplace personal items — or for those personal items to be delayed or lost in transit, or worse, stolen during the course of the cruise. Making sure you have baggage loss coverage to help you recover the costs of replacing your lost items, or baggage delay coverage to help you get the necessities covered while you wait for your bags, can greatly decrease the stress of losing your belongings.

    Identity Theft

Losing personal documents such as passports is certainly a possibility when on a cruise. Identity Theft protection is a unique service offered by some travel insurance companies, which can help guide you through the process of minimizing any possible damage to your credit or financial reputation, while also taking care of important communications and monitoring for you and helping you to replace your documents as quickly as possible.

    Financial Default

One important benefit that third-party insurance policies offer is possible coverage for financial default. In other words, if your cruise line or another travel supplier related to your cruise goes bankrupt, financial default coverage would allow you to potentially recover the money paid to that travel supplier, as long as you weren’t able to make suitable alternate arrangements. However, financial default coverage is a time-sensitive benefit, so be sure to look into purchasing your travel insurance as soon after you make your first trip payment as possible.

    Hurricanes and other Inclement Weather

Cruise ships are obviously especially vulnerable to the effects of hurricanes or other severe weather. While travel insurance will not offer you any coverage if your cruise goes off as scheduled, but misses a few ports of call or has to re-route entirely due to bad weather, it can cover you if the cruise is cancelled or cut short. There are also important travel insurance benefits available that are related to bad weather that occurs at your home, or which impacts any portion of your trip, including air travel.

How to Book a Cruise Including Flights

Save time by booking your cruise and airfare together. (Photo: Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

When you book a cruise, whether a short weekend trip to the Caribbean or an extended voyage across the Mediterranean, chances are you’re going to have to travel to the cruise port. Unless you live within a few hours drive of a major port, that usually means flying to the nearest city. Many cruise lines allow passengers to book airfare at the same time as the cruise. This not only gives you the benefit of choosing from flights that ensure you’ll arrive at the port on time, but when you book directly, the cruise line will assist you in the event that you have a travel delay or problem.

    Step 1

Visit the website for the cruise line you wish you travel on, or an online travel booking site. Click on the link to book a cruise.

    Step 2

Indicate the cruise you want to take by choosing from the option menu; in most cases, you’ll need to choose a cruise destination, the month you want to travel and your departure port. Click search to find cruises.

    Step 3

Choose the cruise you want to take from the list of available options. Review the cruise details, and click on the link to book to cruise.

    Step 4

Enter the required information to book the cruise, including your name, address and any special requests you may have. Depending on the cruise line and the booking method you’re using, you may also choose your stateroom when you book.

    Step 5

Click on the link to add air transportation to your cruise. Enter the departure and arrival cities. In most cases, the cruise line will pre-populate the date section with the dates of your cruise, but you’ll have the option of adding days on either end of the cruise.

    Step 6

Choose the flights you wish to take from the available options, and follow the prompts to add them to your cruise reservation. Enter the required information for each traveler; the Transportation Security Administration requires all air passengers to provide their full name, birth date and sex when purchasing airline tickets.

    Step 7

Confirm that all of the information for your cruise and the airfare is accurate. Double-check that there is adequate time to travel between the cruise port and the airport; in most cases, you’ll need at least four hours to ensure that you make it to your cruise on time.

Add any additional excursions or extras on to your cruise, if desired. Some cruise lines allow you to reserve and pre-pay for shore excursions, or pre-pay gratuities.

    Vacation Packages

Vacation packages offer two or more different travel services, like flights, hotels, and car rentals together. All inclusive vacation packages offer great value, and everything is arranged for you, so you can focus on having fun! Before you sign up, find out what is included in the package and what is not.

This is a good time to plan a vacation, because vacation packages are on offer at very attractive prices. You can get great value for your money and can book packages that may have been out of reach last year.

Due to the economic downturn, many people are canceling their vacation plans. As a result, travel packages are being offered at bargain prices, and lots of extras are being thrown in to attract customers. Cruise packages are being offered at highly discounted rates, and air fares have also dropped, though the decreases have not been as large.

An online search can help you to find out about cheap vacation packages being offered at holiday destinations of your choice. You can book some of the best hotel packages and honeymoon packages at a fraction of their usual price.

The Internet has made it possible for you to find out about Las Vegas vacation packages, Caribbean vacation packages, Disney vacation packages, Cancun packages, and more, with a few clicks.

Rates for vacation packages are usually provided on a per person basis, on double occupancy. Packages designed for families include children who are under a certain age. Family vacation packages and packages for groups are usually cheaper than individual packages.

It pays to make arrangements with a reputable travel provider, so take time to check their credentials and reputation. Compare the packages offered by different travel providers, and read the fine print before you sign up.

Look for an affordable package that will allow you to have a good time with your family. A vacation package that costs slightly more may offer much better value than the cheapest option. Remember, you get what you pay for!

We can help you to find vacation and hotels packages that are just right for you, based on your interests and budget. There are no charges or commitments involved at all and we will not disclose your contact details to anyone without your permission. Find out about how we can help you now!

    Comparing cruise travel insurance

Taking a cruise is a great way to holiday, many people love the idea of waking up in a different place every day and enjoying life at sea. But there are a few things that could happen on a cruise that wouldn’t on a traditional holiday.

That’s why it’s useful to search for cruise specific cover when you’re looking for your travel insurance.

As you probably know, it can be essential to have travel insurance as it should protect you if things go wrong when you’re far from home.

    What does travel insurance cover?

The main idea behind travel or holiday insurance is to cover you for cost of medical treatment abroad – which could go into thousands of pounds. It could also pay for you to be transported home in an emergency.

Policies do vary from insurer to insurer, but most should includeemergency medical treatment costs, including hospital charges and ambulance fees. They usually cover getting you home after medical treatment abroad, if you can’t use your original ticket. Often you’ll be covered for the costs of a friend or relative staying with you while you’re treated, or flying out from home to support you if needed.

Your policy can also cover you for the loss of your baggage or other possessions, and refund you if the trip has to be cancelled or cut short for some reason.

Isn’t that enough for a cruise too?

If you’re getting travel insurance it’s usually because you want to protect against unlikely – but serious – things that could go wrong on your trip.

So as there are some more things that could happen on a cruise, it might make sense to protect against these too.

Let’s talk about the kinds of things that you might want your cover to protect against. These are included in most policies but check your level of cover.

Missed port cover protects you if a planned destination visit is cancelled because of bad weather or timetabling. In others words, if you miss out on an island or city that you were looking forward to visiting, you will get some money back.

Cabin Confinement Cover means that you can claim a payment if you have to stay in your cabin due to illness. You would need to have been confined to cabin by the ship’s medical officer to claim.

Unused Excursions Protection should pay out if you miss an excursion because of an accident, injury or illness. This might only apply to excursions you choose at the point of booking your cruise, not ones you have booked since being on board.

Finally, a serious risk when you’re on a cruise is that you have a medical emergency and need to be taken urgently to hospital. Cruise insurance will allow for the costs of emergency helicopter transfers.

So how much will it cost you to buy cruise insurance? It actually depends on a few things, so the best way to find out what would work best for you is to run a travel insurance comparison.

    Where are you going?

When you compare travel insurance you first need to decide if your policy needs to cover you just for Europe, the USA or Caribbean, or if you need worldwide travel insurance – you need to name the countries as part of the quote journey, so have your cruise itinerary handy.

    Who are you taking?

Your cruise insurance could just be for you, or you could buy it as a couple, family or a group. If you’re including other people, you’ll need their dates of birth and information about any medical conditions they might have, to get an accurate quote.

    How’s your health?

Insurers believe that if you have a health condition it could mean you‘re more likely to need medical help while you’re away. Because of this, some conditions might make your insurance more expensive but this isn’t always the case with all conditions.

It’s important that you list any medical conditions and give insurers all the information they need because, if not, you might be charged more by your insurer or not be covered. Should your insurer discover that the medical emergency on your trip was linked to a condition you already had, they could refuse to pay your bills or add a cost.

So to get you a list of quotes, we’ll ask you a few questions about your health and ask you to add in the names of any medical conditions.

    Compare and save!

Next you’ll get a page full of travel insurance quotes. This are listed in price order with the cheapest travel insurance at the top.

You can also see the details and features of each policy – how well it’s rated by Defaqto, the levels of medical, baggage and cancellation cover and what excess you would pay if you did make a claim. You can filter your results to only show those over a certain limit, if you like.

To find out more about what is and isn’t included in the policies, click each one for more details.

Once you have found a travel insurance quote that suits your planned cruise, click the button to go through and buy. But do make sure you read all the details.

We hope you have a fantastic cruise and have no need to claim, but make sure you have the right cover, just in case

    Cruise Travel Insurance Comparison #travel #flight #tickets

    #travel insurance comparison
    #

    Other People Are Reading

    Lost Luggage

Cruise clothing, cameras, computers, sports equipment and electronics are expensive. If your luggage is misdirected or lost, travel insurance can replace your items and compensate for the financial loss. Common carriers, including airlines, cruise ships, buses, ferries and trains, include some coverage in the purchase of your ticket. This coverage is often quite limited and may not cover the value of your items. Travel insurance providers offer additional coverage to cover lost or stolen items. Compare insurance plans to make sure that you have adequate insurance to replace all high ticket items you transport.

    Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Online insurance providers offer dozens of different policies and add-on options to provide complete comprehensive insurance for persons planning a cruise vacation. Several providers offer up to $1 million in accidental death insurance, coverage for medical emergencies, medical evacuation, lost baggage, flight interruptions and cancellations, as well as for trip disruption for business. Use their interactive tools to find a policy that offers you emotional and financial assurance. Enter the date of departure and return, destinations and the number of people traveling in your group. Special group rates are offered for parties of 10 or more. Most companies offer free coverage for children under the age of 18 traveling with an insured guardian or parent.

    Restrictions

Compare policies by reading the fine print. Determine if there are rules or regulations that limit coverage based on previous conditions, age or gender. Travel insurance companies also offer coverage for high risk sports activities, such as rock climbing, scuba diving, skiing and white water rafting. If activities offered by your cruise line or activities on shore put you at risk, this type of coverage is a prudent purchase.

    Cancellation Protection

An illness in the family, conflicting business obligations, inclement weather, airline strikes or political unrest can cause you to need to cancel or reschedule your cruise vacation plans. Cruise lines, both large and small, offer insurance packages that will offset the expense of events that can disrupt your travel itinerary. Be sure to read the fine print carefully and ask questions if you do not fully understand the extent and limitations of a policy.

First class and business class flights

FareBuzz is an airfare consolidator that purchases blocks of seats on longer, usually international, flights. By buying airline seats in bulk, they are able to offer discount airfare to international travelers. Business and first class seats are heavily discounted-the site promotes: “business class seats at economy prices.”

Buying Airfare via the Cruise Line

Most cruise lines do offer air travel bundled with cruise purchases. Buying your plane tickets through the cruise line has one key advantage: if your flight is delayed or canceled the cruise line will work to help you get to the port before your cruise departs.

You will have fewer choices of flights, so the flight itineraries presented may be less convenient, meaning possible connections and more hours in airports. Also, cruise line airfares are usually more expensive than what you can find on your own. By purchasing your plane tickets from discount suppliers, you may save enough to cover the cost of a spending the night before your cruise in the departure city-extending your vacation by a day and making sure your flight gets you into town well before your ship sails.

If you’re interested in booking your flights through the cruise line, ask your CruiseCompete agent for help.

    Learning at Home

Cruise training makes it easy for agents.

When you re juggling bookings for multiple clients, trying your best to close sales or networking to promote your business locally, sometimes the easiest place to train is at home. Fortunately, cruise industry and cruise line training is available online 24/7 so it s easy to take the training on your own schedule, and often, at your own pace.

Most courses are free, and you ll learn new skills, earn credit toward certifications or even qualify for perks and prizes from suppliers. So what s new for online cruise training in 2011? Here s a sampling of highlights.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) fields a robust portfolio of online courses targeted at agents selling cruise. Three new CLIA courses will debut during live conference training at cruise3sixty in Fort Lauderdale in April.

While the courses only have working titles at this point, the topical focus of the three-hour course will be specialty or niche cruising, and the two new 90-minute classes will focus on 20 Best Practices for Home-Based Agents and Clever Ways to Close the Sale. By the third quarter, the new courses should be online.

In addition, the online Fleet Review Seminar is being revised for 2011. A new course introduced in 2010, the three-hour Getting Connected: A Primer to Social Media Networking class, is already available online, while many other classes will be added online by year s end.

Agents may also tackle CLIA courses that focus on effective presentation skills, understanding the luxury market, group sales or creation of a cruise marketing plan.

    Beyond Cruising

When it comes to online training and business resources, why not expand your reach beyond the cruise or travel industry? Here are some web-based resources to hone your business skills.

The BizToolKit at the James J. Hill Reference Library delivers a wealth of helpful resources, research data and tips. One neat perk? It offers ideas based on the stage of your business whether exploring, beginning, growing, managing, developing or maturing.

If you already have a robust business and want to expand, check the growing section for links focused on an e-mail marketing metric report or a video podcast about Relationships Not Rules: Client Talk 101. Many linked resources are free; some carry a fee. Visit www.jjhill.org/business_stages .

SCORE, a volunteer-based business organization, has both working and retired executives and business owners donating time and expertise as business mentors. And they ll help you for free. Visit www.score.org .

The SME Toolkit, developed as a public service by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and IBM, provides essential business tools designed for Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American and women-owned businesses. But the messages benefit all businesses. Visit www.us.smetoolkit.org/us/en .

For each three-hour online course a CLIA member agent takes, he or she will earn 15 credits toward Cruise Counselor Certification; 90-minute courses earn 10 credits. Completing any of CLIA s Online Sales Training programs and exams also fulfills the training requirement for CLIA ID Card renewal.

In many cases, courses also count toward elements of a degree program at the University of Phoenix, an option CLIA introduced a few months ago. And, if you re a CLIA member, you may access the CLIA Member Cruise Line Travel Agent Training Benefits Center, which displays online links to individual cruise-line member sites and their training.

Those individual lines have a wealth of substantive online information and training. Princess Cruises (www.one sourcecruises.com) fields more than 40 courses at its Princess Academy. Meanwhile, Holland America Line (www.hollandamerica.com ) has both introductory and advanced courses, including instruction on how to grow your business through group sales and how to write a marketing plan. Regent Seven Seas Cruises (www.rssc.com ) says it has just updated the RSSC University site and added a new area with premium line comparisons.

What s new on the class front? This spring, Azamara Club Cruises will launch the Azamara World Academy, an online training tutorial for agents. With topics that heavily focus on the line s product, the Azamara Academy will have four major sections The Brand, Voyage Highlights, Selling Tools and Policies with multiple classes in each.

Carnival Cruise Lines launched its comprehensive Carnival Cruise Line University (CCLU) last August and the line told Travel Agent it will introduce a revamped CCLU this spring. Approximately 900 travel agents took Carnival s online Social Media Webinar last year; a new version of that popular course will be introduced during the next few months.

Beginning in March, Celebrity Cruises will post podcasts on its Five Star Academy portal (http://celebrity5staracademy.com ), a learning certification tool for agents. Also new for 2011, Celebrity will be adding new learning games and updates to reflect new experiences across the fleet.

Crystal Cruises unveiled a new Crystal Cruises: A Perfect Choice course late in 2010, and has already updated it this year. Separately, more than 800 agents who have taken the line s extensive training have been certified by the line as a Crystal Cruises Expert Travel Agent since the beginning of January.

Agents who look up Cunard Line s Academy will notice that the luxury line has updated The Grills Experience course, which describes amenities available to Princess Grill and Queens Grill Suites guests. Cunard also says other updates will be completed by July.

MSC Cruises USA plans to expand its free online training offerings this year with a new online Exotic Arabia Webinar, but the date for that course s release has not yet been announced. In addition, the line has enhanced its Yacht Club Webinar.

Norwegian Cruise Line s NCL U now includes an updated Caribbean elective course and the line will also add a new comprehensive Europe elective this year. Agents who complete and pass the course will be eligible to win a European cruise and other prizes. In addition, our three courses for CLIA credit are being updated and refreshed and will all be relaunched in the first half of 2011, says AnneMarie Mathews, NCL s director of public relations.

But it s not just the basics. Increasingly NCL and other cruise lines are adding more advanced courses. Mathews says agents can take courses that directly benefit their business, including Social Networking, Public Relations and Marketing. Plus, very soon we will be launching a very helpful SEO/SEM (search engine optimization and search engine marketing) course, says Mathews. To take NCL U courses, agents must first register for an NCL ID at www.bookncl.com .

New for 2011, Royal Caribbean International s Training Certification portal on CruisingPower.com consolidates all the line s training resources in one location. For example, its full-bodied webinars are now here.

The line s newest training module, The Royal Advantage will launch this month. Among other new University of WOW! enhancements is a more interactive and graphically pleasing experience, including the ability to virtually tour a ship, and fun games and activities. A new training resources page is also now loaded; it ultimately will have interactive training demos and simulations.

On the specialty cruising side, Larry Dessler, executive director, Niche Cruise Marketing Alliance (www.nichecruise.com ), says NCMA will recreate its online training modules during 2011; there won t be any cost element changes, he adds.

Uniworld says its River Cruise Specialist training program has been redesigned this year with better technology and updated product information. It previously was six modules and is now seven. Now agents may also leave and come back at a later time to complete their training.

Viking River Cruises plans to create some specific webinars this year that focus on helping agents sell more with a hefty focus on such sales tools as the line s travel-agent portal, co-branded websites and Constant Contact e-mail programs. We will focus on how to navigate each of them, how to get signed up, plus insider tips and tricks on how to use them, says Julie Rosoff, senior director, marketing services. We have had great success in getting agents signed up for these programs. We are now taking the next step in helping them use these resources to maximize their marketing efforts in a cost-effective and time-effective way.

Cuba’s Travel Change: What To Expect From Airlines And Cruise Lines

    Walter Bibikow via Getty Images

NEW YORK (AP) — NEW YORK (AP) — In a story Dec. 17 about travel to Cuba, The Associated Press reported erroneously the number of Americans who were authorized to travel to Cuba last year. The number was 124,000, not 170,000.

A corrected version of the story is below:

US travel industry carefully eyeing Cuba tourism

US travel industry has been quietly looking to expand into Cuba; plans could now accelerate

    By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ

    AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Cuba was once a haven for sun-seeking American tourists. Beautiful beaches, lively casinos and late-night dancing made it the perfect getaway, only an hour’s flight from Miami.

But the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro and the subsequent Cold War embargo of the communist island nation put an end to that.

President Barack Obama’s announcement Wednesday of plans to re-establish diplomatic ties with Cuba doesn’t suddenly lift the ban on U.S. tourism. It does, however, give hope to airlines, hotel chains and cruise companies — all which have been quietly eyeing a removal of the travel ban — that they soon will be able to bring U.S. tourists to the Caribbean nation.

“Cuba is the largest country in the Caribbean, so there’s some exciting possibilities,” said Roger Frizzell, spokesman for Carnival Corp. He said “some infrastructure for cruising already exists in the country,” although other issues “need to be taken into consideration if this market opens up.”

A handful of international companies already operate in Cuba. For instance, Spanish hotel chain Melia has 26 properties on the island. U.S. companies, like Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International — the two largest chains by rooms — say they welcome any future opportunities to include Cuba in their rapidly growing global footprint.

“We will take our cues from the U.S. government, but look forward to opening hotels in Cuba, as companies from others countries have done already,” Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson said via an emailed statement.

While most Americans are prohibited from traveling to Cuba and spending money there, close relatives of Cubans, academics and people on accredited cultural education programs can visit. And there is a tiny, but robust business in transporting people to Cuba.

Most operators are tiny storefront travel agents in the Miami area with names like Alina’s Travel Co. and Gina’s Travel Services. Those agents then charter planes from carriers like American Airlines to transport the groups.

About 124,000 U.S. citizens flew nonstop to Cuba last year, up from 77,000 in 2012, according to the Department of Commerce.

“Once people get a glimpse of Cuba, they always want to see more,” said Katharine Bonner, a senior executive at Connecticut-based tour operator Tauck, which runs tours there under a cultural exchange license. “Americans are very curious about a country that is 90 miles off our coast but has been off limits for so long.”

It is that isolation, in part, that is so appealing. There’s no McDonalds, no Starbucks. Bonner said once travel opens, there will be a rush to see Cuba before its gets “Americanized.”

“It’s almost like a country that has been frozen in time,” she said. “There’s going to be a desire to see Cuba before it changes.”

The challenge for the industry will be to offer trips to Cuba for eager tourists without alienating anti-Castro Cuban-Americans who stay in hotels or take cruises elsewhere. Regardless, for now, senior Obama administration officials say that travel to Cuba for tourist activities will remain prohibited.

U.S. airlines have been quietly dipping their toes in Cuba’s warm waters for years.

American Airlines dominates many of the routes to Latin America with its hub in Miami. It’s run charters to Cuba for more than 15 years, according to spokeswoman Martha Pantin. It now operates 20 weekly flights from Miami to Havana, Holguin, Santa Clara and Cienfuegos and from Tampa to Havana and Holguin.

JetBlue Airways started flying Cuba charters in September 2011. It’s a very small part of the airline’s business; just three weekly flights on Airbus A320s with 50 to 80 customers, either to Havana or Santa Clara.

CEO David Barger told The Associated Press last year that the charters are a way of “just understanding what happens, if in fact there’s a normalization.”

Delta Air Lines, which operated more than 240 charter flights between October 2011 and December 2012, said it has no immediate plans to fly to Cuba. But, spokesman Anthony Black noted that “having served there through our charter operations, the groundwork has been laid for us to possibly serve the market if an opportunity becomes available.”

Airlines are granted the right to fly international routes through bilateral agreements between U.S. and foreign governments. A similar agreement would need to be reached with Cuba first. There is one dating back to 1953 — it was last updated on July 30, 1957 — that allows specific routes from New York, Washington D.C. Houston, New Orleans and the Florida cities of Miami, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

The one immediate change for licensed travelers: they will now be able to return to the U.S. with $400 in Cuban goods, including tobacco and alcohol. Limited amounts of Cuban cigars might be the new hot souvenir.

With reports from Josh Lederman in Washington D.C.

What is the Right Travel Insurance for a Cruise? #travel #pillow

While cruise travel is a relatively safe mode of travel, cruise travelers are among the largest purchasers of travel insurance primarily because cruise trips are relatively expensive trips that are often planned far in advance, but traffic accidents happen, jobs end, and people get sick. Cruise travel insurance protects travelers from the losses and risks related to cruise travel.

What are the risks on a cruise?

Some of the unexpected things that can go wrong on a cruise include the following:

    • You miss the boat there are any number of reasons you could miss your cruise departure. You could have a traffic accident en route. Bad weather could delay your flight arrival. You, or someone close to you, could be injured or become ill before you leave. You could be delayed at one of the ports of call and miss the departure. If you miss your cruise departure or have to cancel your trip, who can you call for help?
    • Your luggage is delayed or gone entirely while it’s less common, luggage is still sometimes routed incorrectly, which could mean a significant delay in being reunited with your belongings (especially if you’ve already departed!). Of course, your luggage could also be stolen from you or damaged beyond repair or use. If your luggage is delayed beyond your cruise departure, who will help you track it and what will you do until it arrives? If your luggage is gone entirely, how will you replace the items you need on your trip?
    • You have a medical emergency at sea medical emergencies at sea are common more common than most travelers think. If you or your child are hurt or become ill on your cruise, the cruise may or may not have medical staff with the necessary training and equipment to help. You may be forced to evacuate the cruise to the nearest medical facility. Who will coordinate medical transportation and how will you pay for it?
    • You are assaulted If you are assaulted prior to or during your cruise trip, you may decide to cancel the trip or end it and return home. How will you recover your travel costs so you can start your own path to recovery?
    • Your cruise or tour is canceled travel suppliers including cruises, tours, rentals, and on-shore adventure providers can have financial problems you don’t know about ahead of time. If they cease operations, how will you recover the money you paid them?
    • Your wallet or passport is stolen relaxed travelers can be robbed on board or while exploring the next port of call. The cruise line and its staff are not responsible for lost or stolen items, and once on land, travelers are at the mercy of the local authorities. Who can you contact for help replacing your passport and guarding your identity?
    • You need help or advice anytime you are traveling in a new place, you could be in a situation where you need travel advice or emergency assistance. You may even need help communicating in a foreign language. If you need travel advice, legal advice, or foreign language assistance, who can you call?

What coverage do you need in your cruise travel insurance?

While the following is not an exhaustive list of all the coverages available with cruise travel insurance plans, it describes those that are most useful to cruise travelers.

    • ‘Cancel for any reason’ coverage provides reimbursement for your pre-paid travel expenses if you have to cancel your trip prior to departure no matter what. (Review the details of ‘cancel for any reason’ coverage .)
    • Missed connection coverage helps travelers who encounter severe weather, unplanned labor strikes, and even overbooking errors get their trips back on track. (Review the details of missed connection coverage .)
    • Medical coverage provides for emergency medical and dental care in the case of a sudden illness or injury on your cruise. (Review the details of medical/dental coverage .)
    • Evacuation coverage arranges and pays for medically necessary evacuations or for the repatriation of a traveler’s remains. This coverage can also help a patient get home after they have been treated. (Review the details for evacuation and repatriation coverage .)
    • Financial default coverage provides reimbursement for payments made to a travel supplier that completely ceases operations due to financial default or bankruptcy. (Review the details of financial default coverage .)
    • Trip interruption coverage provides reimbursement for your pre-paid travel expenses if you have to end or interrupt your trip and return home. (Review the details of trip interruption coverage .)
    • Worldwide travel assistance services helps travelers who are lost, or need travel assistance, or need help restoring their identification. (Review the details of travel assistance services .)

    Who should buy cruise insurance?

Travelers like these should purchase cruise travel insurance:

    • Travelers on an expensive cruise. You may have waited and saved a long time for this trip, so it’s important to protect your financial investment. If the trip costs more than you can afford to lose, you should purchase adequate travel insurance coverage.
    • Honeymooning couples. Newlyweds don’t need the distraction or complications of trying to solve expensive travel problems on this important trip. Missing a flight connection can cause you to miss the boat and have to fork over additional dollars you didn’t plan on spending just to catch up to the boat.
    • Families traveling with children. Just as you plan for emergencies and accidents at home, you have to be just as prepared on your trip. Your child could get sick before the trip and cause a cancellation, they could be hurt or injured in the unfamiliar environment on board, any number of accidents can happen.
    • Seniors taking a cruise. Medical emergencies can happen anywhere and the truth is that health insurance plans even Medicaid does not provide coverage outside the U.S. borders. Don’t take the risk; get adequate coverage for the trip.

When should you buy your cruise travel insurance?

When you purchase your cruise travel insurance may be just as important as why you purchase it.

Remember that all travel insurance companies offer a free look period with a refund if you decide the plan is not what you need.

Where should you buy your cruise travel insurance?

We recommend purchasing your cruise travel insurance directly from a third-party company for a number of reasons.

Very briefly, you’ll have more choices and options in your travel insurance plan if you purchase from a third-party company using a comparison tool .

How can you be sure the cruise travel insurance coverage is adequate?

This Editors’ Choice cruise on the Carnival Cruise line is the best price we’ve seen for any 4-night cruise to the Bahamas this year, ringing in at just $40 per person, per night. Stop off at the private cruise line island of Half Moon Cay and the capital city of Nassau with its colonial British buildings and pristine beaches.

River Cruise Discounts for Single Travelers #travel #to #turkey

    #single travel
    #

    Singles Travel

Singles are welcome on every river cruise we offer, though river cruise companies generally require single travelers to pay a single supplement for a private cabin. Some companies help travelers avoid the single supplement with a singles share program, where participants are matched with a roommate of the same gender, or by offering limited-time promotions that reduce or waive the single supplement.

Below are the current offers for singles, followed by a list of each company’s policy regarding single travelers.

Upon request, Abercrombie & Kent will make every effort to arrange shared accommodations for single travelers. If the request cannot be honored, a single supplement will apply.

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

    Alexander+Roberts (First Class or Deluxe)

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Single travelers pay 150 to 175% of the double occupancy rate, depending on the type of stateroom.

A limited number of single occupancy cabins are available. Alternatively, guests may pay a single supplement of 200% of the published stateroom fare, based on availability.

Avalon Waterways (First Class or Deluxe)

Avalon Waterways will match single travelers with a roommate of the same gender in select cabin categories. The share program is not available on all river cruises. Single travelers who do not wish to share a cabin will pay the single supplement.

Blount offers a limited selection of cabins for single occupancy. Single travelers also have the option of paying a single supplement rate of 175% of the double occupancy rate. A “Willing to Share” program is offered for people willing to be paired with a same-gender traveling companion; if no companion can be found, you will be placed alone in a double occupancy cabin.

    Collette (First Class or Deluxe)

Single guests who are willing to share accommodations with another participant must advise Collette at the time of booking. The single supplement is charged initially. If, two weeks prior to the day of departure, another guest is willing to share accommodations, the single supplement will be refunded.

Contiki will match single travelers with a roommate of the same gender. Single travelers who do not wish to share a room will pay the single supplement.

Single travelers pay a single supplement on all vessels except those with single cabins. European Waterways reserves the right to accept a maximum of two cabins for single occupancy for any single cruise.

Most of G Adventures’ trips do not have a single supplement. This means that the accommodation is on a twin share basis and, if you are traveling on your own, you will be sharing a room with another G Adventures traveler of the same sex. Some tours, however, have an optional single supplement or occasionally a mandatory single supplement. You can ask your travel counselor about this when you inquire about the tour you are interested in taking.

Gate 1 Travel (First Class or Deluxe)

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

    Globus (First Class or Deluxe)

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Insight will match single travelers with a roommate of the same gender. Single travelers who do not wish to share a room will pay the single supplement.

Most Intrepid Travel trips do not have a single supplement. This means that the accommodation is on a twin share basis and, if you are traveling on your own, you will be sharing a room with another traveler of the same sex. Some tours, however, have an optional single supplement or occasionally a mandatory single supplement. You can ask your travel counselor about this when you inquire about the tour you are interested in taking.

    Keytours (First Class or Deluxe)

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

Single travelers pay a single supplement, as no single share program is available.

SITA Tours (First Class or Deluxe)

A tour member occupying a single room, either by choice or by circumstance, will pay a single supplement. Quoted single room rate does not necessarily mean single occupancy of a double room, as some hotels and riverboats have single-occupancy accommodations.

    Tauck (Deluxe)

Reservations are accepted as “single share if possible.” The single supplement is charged initially; upon departure, if another guest is willing to share accommodations, the single supplement will be refunded.

    Trafalgar (First Class or Deluxe)

Trafalgar will match single travelers with a roommate of the same gender. Single travelers who do not wish to share a room will pay the single supplement.

    Uniworld (First Class or Deluxe)

Uniworld will match single travelers with a roommate of the same gender in select cabin categories. Single travelers who do not wish to share a cabin will pay the single supplement.

Limited single cabins are available at 150% of the per person double occupancy cruise price for the lowest category, and 200% for all other categories.

Single travelers have the option of sharing with a roommate of the same gender. Single travelers who do not wish to share will pay a single supplement. Single travelers are required to share on overnight cruises and rail journeys; in these circumstances, roommates may not be Wendy Wu Tours passengers.

What is the Right Travel Insurance for a Cruise? #usa #travel

CheaperTravel.com is an Albuquerque, NM tour and cruise travel agency

    Title

Pavlus Travel – Discounts on: Globus, Trafalgar, Insight, Cosmos, Collette, Club Med, Abercrombie and Kent, Travcoa. Tauck Tours Seller, Discounted Holland America, Princess, NCL, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean

    Description

I retired from TWA as Senior VP of Marketing and President of TWA Getaway Vacations after 26 years. One would think I had my fill of the travel business. However, I always had a vision of creating a first class travel company that provided tours and cruises at discounted prices, with full service that clients expect.

In today’s world of marketing travel, many travel agencies have service fees, hidden charges while claiming to have the lowest prices available. I still am amused that so many folks still believe that mega travel agency websites or so-called store travel clubs have the best travel prices. They simply do not.

Treating our clients like Family. Our clients become friends and have told their friends, neighbors, relatives and even ex-spouses about not only our discounted prices but also all first class level of service. Word of mouth advertising cuts down our advertising expenses and we frankly remit those savings back to our clients in the form of discounts.
