School Counseling Curriculum – Lower Merion School District #school #counseling #curriculum,

School Counseling Curriculum

The LMSD guidance curriculum is a cornerstone of our k-12 School Counseling Program. Our School Counseling Program utilizes best practices and is at the forefront of current professional trends. Current trends in School Counseling suggests that the implementation of the guidance curriculum ties the integral role of school counselor to the success of the district’s mission. The guidance curriculum supports the mission of LMSD by promoting student achievement and diversity and teaching students how to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

There are common elements of the curriculum that span the elementary, middle, and high school Programs. At each level the curriculum is composed of lessons designed to teach children specific skills that are developmentally appropriate. School counselors routinely teach the developmental lessons in a classroom setting. There are three primary benefits of school counselors teaching in a classroom setting. Counselors learn your child’s strengths and weaknesses as learner, the nature of their peer relationships, and get to know their unique qualities. Second, students learn competency-based skills in the personal-social, academic, and career exploration domains. Finally, classroom instruction is an efficient way to leverage counselors’ time and for all students to be taught systematically.

Here are some examples of the skills taught through developmental guidance lessons at each level.

  • Empathy building including listening and recognizing other’s feelings
  • Impulse control such as using breathing and other self-calming strategies
  • The steps toward problem solving like brainstorming and choosing a solution

Middle School

  • Understanding the Cycle of Bullying – the bully, victim, and the bystander
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention strategies like assertive communication
  • Self-discovery through Naviance including a learning styles inventory

High School

  • Self-discovery through Naviance using the Career Interest Inventories
  • Understanding standardized testing, mid-term and final preparation, and importance of transcript and GPA
  • College readiness skills like budgeting time and adjusting to more independence

Sheppard Software: Fun free online learning games and activities for kids

I stumbled upon your fun interactive geography games from a link on the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance Website. Since then, your games have become quite a hit with my competitive colleagues!
–Candice Gomes, Education Outreach Coordinator, Boston Public Library (Sheppard Software’s geography games were featured in the Boston Public Library’s 2006 Exhibition on Mapping)

Our preschool teacher just sent us homework with this new website on it! My twins love it – they are 4 1/2 and can’t get enough! The sounds, the action, so many choices and things to do. I bookmarked this for them and have sent the website to numerous friends and best of all it’s FREE!
Thank you for such a wonderful learning tool. — -Cherie Ventola

Let me say that you guys have an awesome website. I stumbled across your site one day, and it has been the easiest, most effective, and really the most fun method for learning geography that I’ve found. –David Weaver

I am thrilled to have stumbled upon your site! As a homeschooling mom, I love to find sites that encourage brain activity and reinforce the facts I teach during learning time!
The range of information is wonderful. Keep up the fantastic work!
-Mrs. JaNell Hancock

Your games are AMAZING!

Your website has SO much to offer!

This site is exactly what I have been looking for! I have four children within five years of age and they can all play your games! I love that you can choose your level of difficulty. The games are colorful and simple, not cluttered like some. The instructions are easy to understand and they cover basic learning that can be neglected with other “too busy” games. I can’t believe what a blessing it is to have stumbled upon this site! I looked up “kindergarten math games online.” This is the first one that I actually enjoyed navigating around in and that actually kept the kids’ attention without discouraging them.

This site will be a daily part of our learning! The kids were fighting over who could take the next turn at the learning game! It is reinforcing everything I am trying to teach.

Choosing An Employer

With the consulting regime conquering the IT scenario, many OPT (Optional Practical Training) employers are in the fray to make a quick buck. So one needs (especially OPT students) to be very cautious and careful while choosing an OPT employer or OPT work. Having a good employer is very vital so as to avoid any legal, payments, and immigration issues in the future and of coz getting work assignments at reputed companies by not being on bench for too long.

Before you set about stumbling upon an OPT employer, one needs to ascertain what his/her short-term goals are. Is it huge pay / getting placed soon. Many OPT employers entice employees with good % billing rates. One should never fall into such kind of traps especially when you are starting your career in consulting. The following are the important features one needs to consider when he/she chooses an employer:

My Job Search Process

As an OPT (Optional Practical Training) International Student, I had been in the same shoes are you were few years ago. I graduated from Chemical engineering from Bangalore University. I saw the trend was to start reading GRE and Toefl and plan to go to USA. Well since the job market in India was not that great, so thought why not follow the trend. Landed in US and joined master’s program in Computer Science. With 9/11 and bad economy, there were no chances of funding or even getting on-campus jobs. Somehow my luck favored and I got my first on campus job in few months. Then got my Assistantship, then my Internship and was ready to graduate.

Job market was still worse. More then job market I didn’t have a mentor to guide me through the OPT/CPT job search process. My friends were in the same boat as I was.

OPT Student Switching from Non IT to IT

Well that’s a tough one…For OPT Students in the conventional majors and who bagged the OPT Jobs in their fields of study…its not at all concern for them to think about this shift at least for the time being. However this thought might arise in them once they settle down in their job and start feeling the ennui about their daily routine due to the lack of freshness or adventure. Also the lure of big pay packets is one main thing that attracts them to IT. Along with these there might be Junta who is really interested in programming stuff, web designing, has the curiosity to learn more about the business side, about finance and IT integration etc which lures them into the IT sector.

There are many OPT Students who couldn’t grab/take the OPT Jobs in their major of study due to various reasons such as economical downturn, H1 cap reached by the time they got their job etc.
