    One of the most difficult challenges a widow or widower can face is deciding to move out of your longtime home and into a new living situation. Even if you embrace the move, it’s important to recognize that there is going to be emotion and nostalgia on the actual day.

    With that in mind, you may want to consider whether you even want to be there on the day. Having a family member or caregiver present on your behalf provides support, comfort and ease with this transition. Whether present for the actual move, you should be involved in choosing which keepsakes stay and go. Planning is key, so start early with a simple colour-coded system (green dots for sold or give away, red for keeping [within the family or one’s new residence], and yellow for later consideration). This can help with the overwhelming stress of making all decisions at once, and may transform some of the experience into a positive, pleasant event. Gifting, donating, are good things to focus on as moving day approaches.

    Picking a slow day to move could save hundreds of dollars, and be applied to your new home. Add too, it makes for a more relaxed environment in moving. Have the movers pack all the breakables, as these are covered by their insurance, and let family pack books and non breakable items.

    Moving is a seasonal business, so take advantage of rates. If winter can be managed, you’ll save monies. If move in the summer, try and make your house closing on the15th of the month. Consider too the weekend: a less busy time for traffic and deadlines.
    In your new home, unpacking (by family and caregivers) should take place as promptly as possible, easing the transition along.

    Copper Valley Telecom announced on April 14 that it will begin converting homes in Valdez from copper based facilities to fiber optic facilities in May.     Doctoral programs in counseling psychology are offered as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees. Applicants need a baccalaureate degree in psychology in order to be considered.

    Course Topics

    A student earning a doctoral degree in counseling psychology online will be expected to complete classes covering the following topics:

    • Ethical and cultural issues in counseling
    • Addiction theories
    • Counseling techniques
    • Intervention practice
    • Marriage, family and addictions counseling
    • Adolescent and childhood counseling
    • Group therapy
    • Recovery strategies

    Dissertation

    Students are required to prepare and defend a dissertation based on independent research projects. Since research, statistics and completion of the doctoral dissertation are completed independently, an online delivery method is appropriate for a student working toward a doctoral degree in counseling psychology.

    Online Learning, Residency and Practicum Requirements

    An online doctoral degree program in counseling psychology also requires students to participate in groups, classes and seminars online. Many distance learning programs require periodic attendance at seminars or orientation sessions held at the main campus. Some Ph.D. programs may require students to spend additional time, up to one year, in residence. In addition, most online doctoral degree programs integrate practicum and internship experiences.

    Licensing Requirements

    Completion of clinical and internship work is required in order to be eligible for licensure. Graduates need to pass a state licensing exam in order to become clinical psychologists providing counseling services.

    Most online doctoral programs in counseling psychology prepare students for licensure through a combination of online courses and in-person internships and/or residencies. Programs usually require completion and defense of a dissertation that includes independent, original research.

    Master of Science in Nursing Programs

    Students may enter the MSN- Nurse Practitioner program with a BSN. Fall admittance only. The primary care areas of focus for MSN students include adult-gerontology, family and pediatric practice tracks. MSN graduates from these tracks will be eligible for certification as a nurse practitioner.

The PNP program is fully approved by the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses. It prepares graduates to function as effective care providers in collegial relationships with all those who influence the health environment of children.

    Graduates of the program are eligible to seek national certification in pediatrics as a Nurse Practitioner (PNP). Graduates are eligible to seek state prescriptive authority.

    Are you ready to become a CTU Distance Learner?

    All graduate study is demanding. To be successful, students must be willing to set aside and spend the necessary time on their studies (plan on 3-4 hours per credit- hour per week for any course) and on mastering technological challenges they will inevitably face. CTU is ready to help you experience success in this adventure in learning, but you have to be ready and willing to put in the time and work required to meet course demands.

    BASIC SKILLS TUTORIALS ARE AVAILABLE

    CTU provides a series of free online modules that offer tutorials and information, so that you can learn Essential Skills for Theological Education as you come into our graduate programs: Computer Skills, Research Citation Skills, Writing Skills; and Presentation Skills. As soon as you are accepted as a CTU student and receive your CTU Student ID number, you will have access to these modules and can start working your way through them. Completing these modules is required for all new MAPS degree students and will help to set you up for success.

    STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN ONLINE COURSES TOGETHER BUILD A LEARNING COMMUNITY

    Taking courses in an online format is an integral part of the CTU Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (MAPS). What can surprise students new to distance education is how in each course students and professor quickly form an intimate, invigorating, rich learning community. Discussion forums engage you in sharing about your readings, exchanging ideas, asking questions, and offering insights from your particular social and ministerial contexts. It is a wonderful experience to participate in these courses where students bring their ministerial experiences from around the country… and beyond!

    BUT DISTANCE LEARNING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!

    Not all people are suited to learning online. If you are considering taking the CTU MAPS degree through our combination of online courses and summer residencies, reflect on the following technological and attitudinal requirements:

    You will need to have:

    1) a computer readily available that is connected to the Internet (preferably with a high-speed connection);
    2) a browser (the free Mozilla Firefox browser works well with our learning platform);
    3) updated anti-virus program if you are working on the Windows platform (free anti-virus programs are available);
    4) word processing software and basic skills (Microsoft Word is the common software used at CTU, although other programs can produce Word-compatible text files);
    5) media player capability;
    6) microphone and ear- or headphones;
    7) webcam, smartphone, or e-tablet with the capability for creating video reports and conversing via video with your professor and classmates.

    WHAT ATTITUDES ARE REQUIRED?

    Distance learning requires a willing, can-do attitude. With which statements do you identify?

    A. I have the patience required for learning new skills.
    B. I get easily frustrated with learning new skills and do not want to deal with technical problems.

    A. I persevere despite frustration when dealing with new technological challenges.
    B. I readily become frustrated with learning new technology and programs and give up.

    A. I can take a week or two in the summer to come to CTU to take a course or courses and to participate in the CTU’s Formation programs.
    B. I do not think I can get a week off in the summer for courses and formation at CTU.

    A. I have support from my family and co-workers/supervisor to do my studies.
    B. I do not have support at home or work to do my studies.

    If you find yourself choosing “A” to most of these statements, you may well be a good candidate for CTU’s MAPS degree program for Distance Learners.
