Purpose of Program

This program is designed for students who want to work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Common roles and functions of the School Psychologist include psychological assessment, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, research, and program evaluation. School Psychologists work with students, their families, and school staff in order to help students be as successful as possible in school. The program is designed to provide students the academic and practical training necessary to become licensed as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, which is a nationally-recognized professional certification granted by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Program Options

The National Association of School Psychologists and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists both require master’s and specialist-level programs in School Psychology to include at least 60 hours of coursework, including practicum and internship. These entities also provide very specific courses and domains of competence that must be reflected in the curriculum. The degree requirements and curriculum reflect these standards, which will facilitate the professional accreditation of the program and the licensure of our graduates. The requirements also are consistent with those of other School Psychology programs within the state.

The Master of Arts in School Psychology is a 66-hour program, and typically requires three to four years to complete. The program includes coursework and field-based experiences related to psychological assessment, intervention, learning, child development, psychopathology, research, statistics, and professional issues. Students also complete a full-time internship in a school setting. Due to the clinical nature of this program and number of hours required, the degree does not have a Thesis option.

Career Opportunities

School Psychology has been identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as a specialization that is likely to have faster than average employment growth. In addition, Texas has been identified as a state that will encounter one of the most serious shortages of School Psychologists in the near future. Thus, the job prospects for School Psychologists are very favorable. Minority and bilingual school psychologists are especially needed given the increasing diversity of public schools.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements and be in good standing with last institution attended. In addition, applicants must meet/fulfill the following departmental requirements or submissions:

  • Official transcripts indicating a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Curriculum Instruction, Sociology, or closely related field
  • Grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework for the baccalaureate degree, as well as in all graduate-level coursework taken (if applicable). If an applicant’s GPA is between 2.70 and 2.99, probationary admission may be granted and the student must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA during the first 12 hours of coursework
  • GRE Test Scores (including the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing tests). GRE scores cannot be more than 5 years old
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must submit an official score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum scores include a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL Paper version, or a score of at least 79 on the TOEFL Internet version
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional references. These letters should specifically address the applicant’s academic and/or professional skills, and potential to succeed in a rigorous graduate program
  • A Statement of Purpose (approximately 500 words) which outlines the applicant’s: (1) reasons for pursuing the M.A. degree in School Psychology; (2) experiences relevant to the field of psychology or education; and (3) career plans

The Missouri Statewide EdD has an outstanding reputation amongst its graduates – 97% would refer prospective students to the program. The program has been lauded by a number of organizations for its innovative delivery, cohesive curriculum, and rigorous standards, and is one of the 21 Phase I institutions in the Carnegie Foundation Project on the Education Doctorate, a national dialogue about the educational doctorate.

Based on an integrated curriculum, this degree is delivered in cohort format with both face-to-face and web-enhanced instruction. Students take courses during summer sessions at MU’s campus in Columbia, as well as fall and spring courses at a regional partner university. It consists of 34 hours of coursework and 12 hours of dissertation.

Potential students must have a Master’s degree and relevant experience. New cohorts of students are admitted every 2 years, and more than 80% of candidates graduate with an average time of just over 4 years.

The emphasis of the EdD Program is on developing effective, thoughtful, and reflective practitioners who are competent in identifying and solving complex problems of practice in educational settings. As a program dedicated to the development of these scholarly practitioners, graduates will:

  • Know foundational and current theories and perspectives in leadership theory and practice, organizational analysis, educational policy, and content and context of learning.
  • Know the importance of being responsive to issues of social justice including power, privilege, and difference.
  • Know how to identify and analyze problems of practice.
  • Know the value of reflective practice.
  • Know theories and research behind teams and group dynamics.

In addition to developing knowledge that is informed by theory and empirical research, content themes are integrated with practice emphasizing real-time application in the work setting so that graduates will:

  • Be able to provide effective leadership to their respective organizations.
  • Be able to work collaboratively to achieve organizational goals with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Be able to address problems of practice through the use of data, both pre-existing and by utilizing data collection methods of their own.
  • Be able to engage in reflective practice in order to implement change in their professional practice and within their organizations.
  • Be able to respond to issues of social justice within their organizations and communities.

The EdD curriculum provides four critical lenses essential to Educational Leadership, and the Research, Inquiry, and Evaluation tools needed to put that knowledge into practice.

Instruction methods vary to enhance your learning. You will meet face-to-face for a traditional classroom experience, work in teams for a collaborative and dynamic experience, and have online classes to help with busy schedules. All classes are problem-based and provide opportunities for real-time application in practice. The culminating experience as a scholarly practitioner is the dissertation.

    The goal of our online technology education graduate program is to continue the professional development of teachers and leaders in the field of technology education by providing a broad-based understanding of the field and its direction.

    Technology education is a vital aspect of education for all students at all levels in Pennsylvania, as well as many additional states and countries.     This program offers three options. The Technology Education Master’s and STEM Education Certificate options can be completed separately.     Whether you’re a teacher who’d like to increase your use of technology in the classroom, or you desire a career designing educational media, consider a master’s degree or doctorate in educational technology. Two types of doctoral degrees are commonly available in educational technology: the PhD and the EdD (Doctor of Education). The PhD and EdD are very similar, but the PhD is usually more research-oriented, while the EdD may focus on applications utilized by practitioners.

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), instructional coordination jobs, which are suitable for educational technologists, are expected to grow at a faster-than-average rate of 20% between 2010 and 2020. Students who earn a master’s degree could find work in this expanding field, while PhD or EdD graduates can pursue positions as university faculty members. Beyond working in schools, an educational technology degree could offer entry into fields such as corporate training.

    The conceptual framework for both the initial and advanced programs at Prairie View A M University has evolved over the last fourteen years to view educators as facilitators of diverse populations. The conceptual framework was developed by the Unit faculty after extensive review of the literature in education and guidelines of learned societies. The conceptual framework is based upon current issues such as changes in demographics, global perspectives, importance of problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills, technological demands, and the need for life-long learning. The framework consists of four major goals anchored by technology and assessment.

    M.Ed – The M.Ed. program is geared to students who would like to obtain certification as an administrator in the public school system. The Principal and Superintendent Certification programs train practicing educators to exceed State Board of Education Certification objectives in preparation of state examinations.

    MS.Ed – Opportunities are available for pursing the Ms.Ed. (thesis option) for students who may want to focus on higher education or administration outside of the public school system.

    Online Only – Online only program in both areas to meet the needs of students who want to pursue their education but need more flexibility in obtaining their degree.

    This area will address frequently asked questions students have when navigating enrollment and matriculation.

    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT (REVISED) ATTENTION:

    STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE COUNSELING PROGRAM

    Current Program Requirements for Licensure:

    Historically, Prairie View A M University has offered a 36 hours Master’s degree in Counseling. However, the state of Texas requires 48 credit hours to be eligible to take the License Professional Counselor (LPC) Examination. Prairie View’s response to the 48 credit hours requirement was to add the 12 credit hours as a post-degree option. The current practice is the completion of the 36 credit hour degree program and the 12 additional hours to meet current state requirements.

    NEWChange in State Counseling Licensure Requirements:

    The state of Texas has proposed an amendment to increase the required program credit hours to 60 credit hours which will go into effective on August 1, 2017.

    Impact on Current Students in the Counseling Program:

    Beginning August 1, 2017, any student enrolled in a Counseling program at a university in the state of Texas with the desire to take the National Counselor Examination to become a Licensed Professional Counselor must have graduated from a program that is comprised of at least 60 credit hours. Currently our Master’s degree program is 36 credit hours and we encourage students seeking the LPC to take the additional 12 credit hours to meet the current state requirement of 48 credit hours. To meet the new state requirement of 60 credit hours, we have decided that it would be best to temporarily suspend all new admissions to the Counseling Program for 18 months to redesign the curriculum to better serve our students. All currently enrolled students will be able to continue in the program to complete the requirements for the Master’s degree. No new students will be admitted to the Counseling Program beginning September 1,2016 .

    PLEASE NOTE: ANY CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENT WHO DOES NOT COMPLETE THE 36 CREDIT HOUR DEGREE PROGRAM AND THE ADDITIONAL 12 (48 CREDIT HOURS TOTAL) BY AUGUST 1, 2017 WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE LPC EXAMINATION.

    You may take the additional 12 credit hours to meet the new state requirement in one of PV’s other graduate programs that offer counseling and/or therapy courses (e.g. College of Agriculture and Human Sciences).

    Stony Brook University offers two post-master’sadvanced graduate certificate programs that lead to certification in areas of school district, building and business leadership.

    • The Educational Leadership (EDL) program prepares K-12 educators for advancement to positions at both the school district (SDL) and school building (SBL) levels. Such positions include superintendent of schools, district superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal, department chairperson, or athletic director. As of Fall 2007, this is the first program of its kind in New York State that serves as a pathway for certification at both the district and building levels.
    • The post-master’s certificate in School District Business Leadership (SDBL) program prepares professionals from the corporate world, public service agencies, and charitable institutions for access and advancement to positions in a school district central office, such as assistant superintendent for school business positions.

    The programs are offered in collaboration with the University’s Professional Education Program and articulate with EdD programs from other universities in the region .

    Flexible Scheduling

    To meet the demands of working professionals, the combined SDL and SBL program is offered completely online.

    Residential Treatment Programs

    R ESIDENTIAL or In-Patient Programs usually require a commitment of at least 30 days and typically include room and board. Through intensive counseling and group interactions, addicts/alcoholics learn how to regain control of their lives using key recovery tools. Most programs follow the 12 steps of AA. Some residential programs are staffed to provide addicts with detoxification services to help through the early stages of withdrawal.

    The goal of all recovery programs is to help the addict recover from drug/alcohol abuse by addressing the underlying issues that contribute to addiction. These programs remove the addict from the environment and acquaintances that enabled their addiction allowing the recovering addict to focus on their addictive behavior instead of their drug use.

    Educational Technology Leadership Option

    The Educational Technology Leadership Option provides the participants with additional technological knowledge and skills to create effective school district technology plans, to develop training programs for classroom teachers in the use of technology, to promote organizational change through technology, to manage technology resources and personnel in a school setting, and to apply their technical skills and knowledge to identify and utilize technological resources appropriately for the needs of the schools, school districts, and similar educational organizations.

    Masters Program Overview

    The program is designed for educators, technology specialists, and e-learning developers who serve in creative leadership roles in school districts, industry and governmental agencies. It specializes in e-learning development, and fosters technological and leadership skills of graduate students. This 45-unit program consists of six core courses (24 units), a capstone project (5 units) and Electives (16 units). Students take a series of 6 core courses designed to prepare students to apply technology to enhance teaching and learning. The electives offered are from various content areas of the technology.

    Courses

    Core Courses: EDUI6110, EDUI6200, EDUI6240, EDUI6350, EDUI6500, EDUI6600, and one of the following: EDUI6899 or EDUI6900

    Please note: Our course is EDUI, not EDUL.

    Elective Courses: (16-19) Units must be approved by the program coordinator.

    The Curriculum Option is designed to provide advanced special preparation or competencies for teachers and other educational professionals at all grade levels. The Curriculum Option is based on four core foundation courses and electives. The program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

    Admissions

    Students must demonstrate knowledge and application of the Internet and tablet devices. Students must have experience with Web-based instruction. Basic knowledge of digital technologies and HTML is required. Advanced proficiency in one platform (e.g. Macintosh, Windows, UNIX) is required. Students will be accepted into the program based on a qualification evaluation and/or an interview by a committee where they demonstrate their technology competence. Students are also required to maintain their level of competency in technology as long as they are graduate students in the program.

    13 quarter units (9 semester) from a graduate level or completed credential program from an accredited university. Continuing Education/Extension units from other universities cannot be transferred into the MS program. Any transfer units must be approved by the program coordinator.

    Education Requirements

Working with journeymen and master plumbers, apprentices learn to cut holes in studs, walls and floors, as well as install piping and fixtures. They’re trained to use soldering irons and power tools, like reciprocating saws. Additionally, apprentices receive instruction in plumbing and building codes, dealing with clients and answering questions for inspectors.

    Licensing

    Once formal training is complete, apprentices become journeymen plumbers. Most states require journeymen plumbers to be licensed. Although requirements vary, the BLS reports that most states require 2 to 5 years of experience and successful completion of a state board examination. Continuing education is generally required in order to keep the license current.

    Career and Salary Information

    The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates a faster than average job growth for plumbers, steamfitters and pipefitters during the years 2014 through 2024. These workers earned $50,620 as a median annual wage in 2015, according to the BLS.

    Individuals planning to enter this rapidly-growing career field can take related vocational courses in high school to prepare for their career. After high school, aspiring plumbers are trained through a 4-5 year apprenticeship program that combines classroom work with hands-on experience.
