8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

8 Epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015

Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others.

Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don’t. The Politico report indicates for Epic’s 2014 edition software, the Verona, Wis.-based EHR vendor charges a software licensing fee, implementation costs and annual maintenance costs while OpenVistA, developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Medsphere, for example, does not.

Even within the subsector of Epic implementations, costs fall across the board. For example, Duke University Health System, based in Durham, N.C. paid approximately $700 million for its Epic EHR (systemwide go-live in 2014) while Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. paid $80 million (go-live in 2011), according to a Forbes report.

John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. said in the Politico report that hospitals selecting Epic’s platform are not just buying a product — they are buying a process. BIDMC does not operate on Epic’s EHR; rather, the hospital earlier this year forged a partnership with athenahealth, which included using the Watertown, Mass.-based vendor’s product.

“Epic is selling a methodology; often a lot of manual processes or heterogeneity and standardizing the work,” Dr. Halamka told Politico. “It’s not that they’re buying expensive software, they’re buying a lot of software.”

No matter where the prices come from, the cost of Epic installations are significant. Here are eight of the most costly Epic implementations reported within the past six months. These are working numbers, with some systems having allotted the indicated amounts to implementation projects and others that have already completed installations.

Partners HealthCare: $1.2 billion
Boston-based Partners HealthCare is one of more recent implementations, going live the first week of June to the tune of $1.2 billion. This is the health system’s biggest investment to date. The implementation process took approximately three years, and in that time, the initial price tag of $600 million doubled.

LehighValleyHealth Network: $200 million
LVHN started its switch to Epic’s platform in February 2015, but the full transition will take between four and six years. Harry Lukens, CIO of the Allentown, Pa.-based system, told The Morning Call the total investment dedicated to the installation includes software, hardware, data conversion and additional personnel.

Mayo Clinic: “Hundreds of millions”
In January 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic announced it selected Epic’s EHR and revenue cycle management platforms and planned to drop its Cerner and GE Healthcare contracts to do so. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the health system or the vendor, but stock analysts told The Kansas City Star it is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.” Additionally, the headline of the Star report reads “Cerner loses Mayo Clinic contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Epic,” indicating a ballpark estimate of the new contract’s value.

LaheyHospital Medical Center: $160 million
On March 28, 2015, the Burlington, Mass.-based hospital completed its two-year implementation of Epic’s EHR system. Two months later, Lahey Health said it was laying off 130 people at three hospitals to close the budget gap. In the six months ended March 31, the health system had lost $21 million, partly due to preparatory EHR implementation costs.

Lifespan: $100 million
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan announced plans to implement Epic’s EHR in March 2013, and the health system went live April 2015. Lifespan initially projected the implementation to cost $90 million, but in a Rhode Island Public Radio report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services, alluded to a total closer to $100 million.

Erlanger Health System: $97 million
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System signed a contract with Epic in May 2015 nearing $100 million. The health system will invest $91 million in capital expenses, but operating expenses will bring the total to $97 million over the next 10 years. Erlanger was deciding between Epic and Cerner’s platform and ultimately chose Epic because the bid was less expensive, CFO Britt Tabor told Times Free Press .

WheatonFranciscan Healthcare: $54 million
In January 2015, Glendale, Wis.-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare announced plans to implement Epic across its hospitals. The system’s affiliated medical group and physician offices have been using Epic’s EHR since September 2012, but providers across the system can only view patient records and not input information. The implementation will create one central EHR platform across the system. Go-lives will begin January 2016. The system expects a return on investment after four years of using the platform.

Saint Francis Medical Center: $43 million
The hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. contracted with Epic in February 2015 and expects to go live in July 2016. Saint Francis plans to connect and exchange records with other hospitals in the St. Louis area also using Epic’s system, including SSM Health and Mercy Health.

Worth noting
A handful of other hospitals and health systems reported signing contracts with Epic this year but did not disclose the costs of the IT projects. Some of these organizations include Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico, Mo. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, San Diego-based Scripps Health and St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article identified Saint Francis Medical Center as being located in Dexter, Mo. We have updated the article to include the correct location, and we apologize for the error.

Electronic Medical Records #electronic #medical #records #benefits

Electronic Medical Records

“The new self check-in kiosk at Lakeside has been a very positive addition to clinic operations. We have received excellent feedback from both patients and staff. Patients are happy because it is a simple interface that rapidly, accurately and privately accomplishes the check-in routine. The staff are happy as it has unloaded a large portion of one of their most time consuming tasks, allowing them the ability to devote more time to the complex tasks that are not so easily automated. We have been pleasantly surprised by everyone’s acceptance of this added functionality”

– Dr. Bill Haver, Managing Partner, Lakeside Medical Clinic

“While there are still people who appreciate registering in person with a receptionist, a high volume of patients are very enthusiastic about the convenience and ease of using the kiosk. The touch screen terminal is so user-friendly, patients of all ages seem very comfortable with it”

– Warner Kabatoff, General Manager, Lakeside Medical Clinic

“Moving from one software to another is a big deal. However once we saw the power of Accuro, the vote was unanimous. Each Physician could see that the future benefits of this system were going to be huge!”

– Tom Malone, Chief Executive Officer, Winnipeg Clinic

“I knew that implementing Accuro EMR across the community would not only facilitate efficiency of workflow, but would allow physicians to make informed decisions based on the bigger picture. With a tailored system, enabling physicians to take control of the system, we now have total care over each and every one of our patients”

– Dr. Harold Nyhof, Vice President, Medical Services, North Eastman Health Association (NEHA)

“As one of the physicians in the largest and busiest clinic in Nova Scotia, with over 15 years of experience on an EMR, I was naturally very cautious about switching to another EMR platform. I was very impressed with our transition to QHR’s Accuro EMR and very relieved that what QHR promised, they delivered. QHR was able to completely import my 15 years of electronic data in a very structured format. I have been very pleased with the transition and the interfaces with the lab and diagnostic imaging which were created. I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO RECOMMEND ACCURO.”

– Dr. Robert Oliver, Woodlawn Medical Clinic, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Cloud technology seen as transforming radiology – Modern Healthcare Modern Healthcare

Radiology being transformed by cloud, proponents say

Radiology being transformed by cloud, proponents say

    By Darius Tahir | October 4, 2014

If digital cloud technology proponents have their way, the field of radiology will be transformed, with major changes in who does the work of reading images, and where and how it’s done.

Instead of storing images on local IT infrastructure and sharing images through physical means such as compact discs, cloud radiology allows storage and transmission of images through an off-site network of computer servers. This model makes it easier to back up files and access those files through multiple devices, without the fear of losing the data if an individual device is compromised.

Experts say that will enable hospitals, medical groups and health IT firms to organize radiology practice in different ways that reduce costs and improve quality. It may mean more hospitals outsourcing the reading of images to external networks of radiologists or other specialists. The turnaround time on reading images may be significantly shortened. And shipping costs and maintenance costs for local storage infrastructure could be reduced.

Increased efficiency may mean increased competition, fewer scans and fewer radiology jobs. A growing number of companies are entering this business and offering cloud-based radiology services to hospitals.

If you went to the major radiology trade shows three years ago, you would hear, ‘I’m not sure about this cloud stuff,’ said Morris Panner, CEO of Phoenix-based startup DICOM Grid. But now, market penetration is rapidly accelerating. His firm claims 85 clients, including the Mayo Clinic. for its cloud infrastructure service.

Dr. David Hirschorn, director of radiology informatics at Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital and a member of the American College of Radiology’s informatics committee, said the cloud may be the best way to create a central repository for images allowing doctors to look at the history of patients’ exams, which is critical for enabling doctors to spot significant changes in their conditions. Otherwise, doctors have to query hospitals for past images one-by-one.

Hirschorn said that while cloud technology has been available for at least a decade, pressures such as rules requiring meaningful use of electronic health records have pushed providers to share more images, giving cloud-based radiology a boost.

Dr. Jonas Rydberg, a professor of clinical radiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine, wants to eliminate the compact disc as a mode of sharing images and replace it with cloud-based sharing. Since 2012, Rydberg has been developing a cloud radiology network across Indiana, called IU Health Radiology Cloud. Currently, there are 79 participating hospitals in Indiana, along with a few in Illinois, and he hopes to add 25 more. He envisions a system in which providers can perform full radiological evaluations within a couple of hours versus the days it previously took to retrieve old images from other hospitals.

In the past, Rydberg said, providers often used CDs in transmitting images. But CDs can be lost. In addition, he estimates that up to 5% of the images were unreadable because of corrupted discs, requiring retests. The cloud allows doctors to reach into the original picture archiving and communication system, or PACS, and access the exam, nearly eliminating the problems of lost or corrupted images, he said.

MH Takeaways Storing and sharing images through the cloud may enable providers to speed up the reading of images, reduce staffing and infrastructure costs, do fewer scans, and spare patients from duplicative tests.

A company called Imaging Advantage, based in Santa Monica, Calif. is using cloud technology to create a nationwide network of radiologists and claims 200 hospitals and health systems as clients. It partners with radiology groups. Naseer Hashim, the firm’s CEO, said when a client hospital requests a read of a scan, his firm can direct the read through the cloud to the right doctor in its network, for instance a radiologist specializing in neurological scans.

Missing exams and problems in sharing images are common nationwide. A survey of 1,900 medical consumers recently released by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology found that 18% of respondents had to hand-carry an X-ray, MRI or previous test to an appointment, and 6% had to redo a test because the previous results weren’t available. Using cloud-based systems, doctors are better able to easily access scans instead of requiring another scan.

Rydberg said his cloud-based radiology project also improves quality of care. For example, waiting physicians can look at scans while a trauma patient is en route to the hospital, and the patient can be sent directly to the operating room. Doctors also can view images through the cloud and offer consultations remotely.

In one case he cited, a trauma surgeon averted a helicopter airlift of a patient because he could tell from images he read over the cloud that the patient’s condition did not justify the airlift.

One challenge to expanding cloud-based radiology is resistance from some physicians and hospitals who see this as taking away their patients. I regard this more as a psychological barrier than a rational barrier, Rydberg said.

Hirschorn agreed that some providers worry that the greater efficiency of cloud-based image sharing means fewer scans and less business. He criticized institutional resistance to sharing images, saying that means more patients undergoing duplicative scans and being exposed to more radiation.

It’s insane, it’s outrageous, and it’s inexcusable, he said.

Still, he said that while cloud technology makes it easier to share data among institutions that pool data, hurdles remain in sharing with other institutions.

    30-minute turnaround

The advantage for client hospitals, he said, is that if their staff radiologists are busy, Imaging Advantage can direct the read off-site to a radiologist affiliated with another hospital who is free at that particular time. If a hospital wants a scan read by a subspecialist, the company can do that, too. The company’s software tracks which radiologists have the appropriate credentials and state licensures.

Hashim said his company’s system can help smaller hospitals that don’t have board-certified specialists in every area.

By reorganizing the work and making radiologists more efficient, Hashim said, the company averages under 30 minutes for turnaround on reading a scan. And the ability for radiologists to do more reads means that productive doctors can get paid more. One obstacle to growth, he said, is that people still hold on to this conception that we need to have radiologists physically located in hospitals, he said.

Dr. Arthur Radow, a Phoenix-area radiologist and past president of the Arizona Radiological Society, said his radiology group joined Imaging Advantage in 2011. Under Imaging Advantage, the group has dropped from 18 doctors to about 12, and the remaining doctors are 60% to 80% more productive and are making more money, he said.

We can recommend to the hospital exactly what the right test is the first time, Hashim said. And that tells us who the right radiologist is.

Royal’s Integrated Pest Management Approach for Controlling Bed Bugs

Royal Pest Management’s policy for bed bug control is defined in 4 separate sections:

Most bed bug jobs are different and present unique challenges specific to their individual locations and type of structure.
However, Royal has created a Bed Bug Control Program that we have found to be a highly effective process to treat for bed bugs.

Royal Pest Solutions is planet friendly and PET-FRIENDLY. Before we perform any pest service at your home, our Pest Professionals will talk with you about your home, your family, and your pets.

Royal understands that your pets are part of your family. It’s important we know the type of pets you have, where they eat and sleep, and if they have recently been treated for any pest problems.

Here’s an example of how Royal cares about your pet. Say your dog brings fleas into your home. You may take him to the vet for a flea treatment, then put a flea collar on him, and then have a Royal Pest Professional treat your home to eliminate fleas.

    Truly Targeted Pest Control

Beneficial insects and other creatures, such as honeybees, birds, praying mantis, and (our favorite) butterflies, need to fly, pollinate and fulfill their essential functions to the planet without fear of the unintended effects of pest control.

Royal Planet Friendly Pest Control provides a much greater margin of safety, presents theLOWEST POSSIBLE IMPACT to the environment, and ensures highly effective control of a wide range of insect pests.

Royal Pest is full-service pest control company serving Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia. Royal uses the most advanced methods and materials in IPM (Integrated Pest Management) to provide customers with pest control that is the safest and most effective in the industry today. Royal s services are a truly planet friendly way to protect your family, your home and your lifestyle from annoying, destructive and harmful pests. We re able to solve practically any pest problem from the most common ( ants, termites, spiders, etc.) to those other pest companies shy away from ( bats, snakes, rats, raccoons, etc.). Our Protects System is designed so that our customers can choose the level of protection best for them and pay only for what they need. No other pest control company delivers Royal s combination of customized service, safety and guaranteed results.

Top Medical Software – 2017 Reviews, Pricing ?>

    Medical Software

Medical software includes a wide class of systems that manage the clinical and administrative functions of healthcare organizations. Systems have been tailored to automate just about every healthcare process, including billing, patient scheduling, creating and managing patient records, picture/image archiving, prescribing medication and more.

In this guide we discuss the following:

    Common Features of Medical Software

Electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) software assists in creating and storing digital patient records. Helps track patient notes, demographics, histories and medications. Features include e-prescribing, SOAP notes, E M coding advice and more. EMRs may also provide lab integration, device integration, tablet support and voice recognition.

Manages the creation of patient statements and submission of claims. Functions include coding, claim scrubbing, eligibility inquiry, electronic claim submission, payment posting and reporting.

Automates the process of scheduling patient visits. Features include automated follow-ups, text message/phone/email reminders and multi-location support. Typically offered with billing in a practice management suite.

Manages the operations and workflow of radiology imaging centers. Automates the process of storing, manipulating and distributing patient data and images.

Manages the storage and retrieval of DICOM images (X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs etc.). Often used in conjunction with an RIS to execute the radiology workflow efficiently.

Automates accounting procedures for healthcare practices. Functions include A/R, A/P, general ledger, financial reporting and more.

What Type of Buyer Are You?

Most organizations we speak with are researching and evaluating medical software for one or more of the following reasons:

Transitioning from paper charts to digital records. It s raining paper is the common cry we hear from paper-based practices. These buyers want to cut back on paper, improve office efficiency, reduce errors and run a more effective operation overall.

Replacing outdated software. This is a common scenario we hear from buyers. Their current system whether it be a homegrown system or from a medical software vendor is out of date and costly to maintain or update. They want a more modern system that is easier to use, meets federal requirements (e.g. ONC-ATCB certification) or that meets feature/functional needs.

Combining applications into an integrated suite. In many cases these practices have a hodgepodge of disparate applications, and as a result, find themselves doing double data entry and dealing with other inefficient workflows and processes. These organizations invest in integrated medical office management software that is, integrated EMR, billing and scheduling applications to centralize all information and functions in one place.

Implementing best-of-breed applications. Conversely, these buyers are focused on applications to address a specific need. Most often, buyers in this category are looking for a stand-alone billing, EMR, RIS or PACS system.

Pursuing federal incentives. We re three years into the HITECH Act, and many physicians are replacing their EHR or purchasing one for the first time to meet federal requirements. In order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentives, physicians or more accurately, eligible professionals must make meaningful use of a certified EHR. Providers have until 2015 to qualify, or they face penalties in the form of decreased reimbursements.

We should note that outpatient and inpatient organizations often have different feature/functional requirements. For example, inpatient care provider centers such as hospitals will require systems to support bed management, UB-04 billing and potentially long-term patient stays. Meanwhile, ambulatory care providers such as family medicine physicians and specialists will share common feature requirements to support walk-in/walk-out care.

    Benefits of Medical Software

The general benefits of any medical system are improved quality of patient care, increased operational efficiency and improved practice profitability. These benefits are created by different applications and impact organizations in different ways.

    • The automation of back-office operations streamlines administrative tasks associated with patient encounters, which may enable providers to spend more time with patients and hire fewer staff.
    • More accurate documentation of these encounters and a more organized claims submission process can lead to improved collections.
    • Automated alerts prompt providers with potential issues or risks, while automated reminders help patients return to the office when necessary, improving quality of care.

In addition to these general benefits, the major applications found in medical software each provide a host of specific benefits. For example, in 2014 we surveyed physicians about the benefits of electronic health records. They cited easy access to records, more robust/legible records and drug interaction alerts as the top advantages of using an EHR.

    Important Considerations

Integrated suite vs. best-of-breed. When selecting a system, buyers will have the choice of implementing different applications for specific tasks, or a complete suite of tools to address all their needs. The key decision that most providers will need to make is whether to implement a standalone electronic medical records (EMR) system or replace an existing practice management system with a complete system. We hear from many buyers facing this decision as practice management systems have been ubiquitous since the 1990s and EMRs are increasing in adoption, primarily due to the HITECH Act.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The trend toward cloud computing is impacting many industries, and healthcare is certainly one of them. Web-based, or SaaS, software offers several advantages such as lower upfront costs, reduced IT and support costs, remote accessibility and more. However, practices in rural settings may not have access to the broadband Internet necessary to efficiently run Web-based software. Moreover, Web-based systems may not support all the feature/functional needs of some practices with unique requirements.

Mobile computing. Going hand-in-hand with SaaS, healthcare providers are finding themselves increasingly on the go and accessing systems from multiple offices, home and mobile devices. Tablet (e.g. iPad) and smartphone support, including iPhones and Android phones, is increasingly common. If you will be accessing your software primarily from a mobile device, we suggest choosing a vendor that has developed a native app for your device, such as MediTouch s iPad EMR.

ONC-ATCB certification. As most healthcare professionals are aware, the HITECH Act of 2009 requires the use of electronic medical records systems by 2015. Eligible professionals can subsequently qualify for up to $44,000 through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program or up to $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. To qualify, they will need to demonstrate meaningful use of one of the ONC-ATCB certified EMRs .

Recent Events You Should Know About

Epic partners with BI software vendor Tableau. In February 2016, Tableau software announced a technology agreement with Epic. This deal gives Epic s medical software users greater access to analytics tools. For example, any dashboards created on Tableau will be integrated in Epic s EHR.

Vendor Aprima acquires EHR reseller Healthcare Data Solutions. The deal, which was announced in January 2017, means Aprima will now service Healthcare Data Solutions customer base of 300 providers in 125 practices across the U.S.

McKesson plans to buy CoverMyMeds. In January 2017, McKesson Corp. announced it will be paying $1.1 billion for CoverMyMeds, a company that automates the process of prior authorization for pharmacies, providers, drugmakers and payers. The deal is expected to close before July 2018. CoverMyMeds is expected to keep operating as an independent business unit under its current leadership team.

Electronic Signature Parcel Tracking Enterprise Mobility Solutions

Customer expectations have changed drastically regarding the delivery of goods. The explosion in online shopping has led to increased consumer demand for better levels of home delivery service. In fact, the delivery phase of any online order is rightly seen as being critical to its success, and this has led to numerous innovations, including parcel tracking and electronic signature capabilities. It remains a key consideration for consumers with a recent UK consumer home-delivery survey finding that half of online shoppers admitted that their buying patterns might have been influenced by comments about delivery on social media platforms.

When you think about it, the courier responsible for delivering the goods you order online is usually the only person you have any interaction with. It is vital that they are able to provide a level of service that meets your expectations because their performance is linked to that of the retailer and plays a key role in your decision to buy online from them again. This is why logistics companies and other firms whose reputations rest on their delivery service are investing in enterprise mobility solutions, such as parcel tracking and electronic signature.

It is not enough to simply execute delivery; the process from dispatch to delivery must be managed as one end-to-end track trace process. Consumers, be it individuals or other businesses, want to see that their consumer delivery preferences have been accounted for in dispatch and that a DPD predict can estimate when goods will be delivered to the home or premises. At the point of delivery, those working in supply chain and field service operations have to be able to track trace the items they are delivering and this is made possible through parcel tracking and electronic signature software solutions.

Track Trace Proof of Delivery, Enterprise Mobility Solutions

Such is the volume of goods and services ordered from consumers on a daily basis, that the idea of postal organisations and logistics companies not managing the track trace of items effectively with parcel tracking and electronic signature is simply unthinkable. Parcel tracking and electronic signature solutions at point of delivery is confirmation that delivery has been completed, but what about the time in between? The logistics market is becoming increasingly congested, with supply chains becoming longer and more complex and new competitors entering the market all the time. This is where Enterprise Mobility and Mobility Solutions have come into their own.

It is so important for existing providers to continually improve their level of service if they are to retain the loyalty of their customers. Mobile workers are the operatives that will show how committed their employers are to the constant improvement that is required. It will soon become apparent to the consumer those who aren’t, so it’s time you started looking at your track trace capability and how parcel tracking and electronic signature solutions can empower your mobile workforce if you haven’t already.

Track Trace is made possible through enterprise mobile apps from Blackbay that incorporate every aspect of the logistics operation. Courier software and GPS trackers allow you to track the movements of couriers you have out in the field at any one time and routing software allows those tasked with delivery to plot and navigate their way to destinations with minimal fuss and the utmost efficiency. Once they reach the delivery destination, parcel tracking and electronic signature is your evidence that the items have been received and signed-off by the recipient, arguably the single most important element. Being able to verify and record successful deliveries is vital, and this is achievable with our proof of delivery app that enables the mobile worker to record and communicate electronic proof of delivery status.

Who provides parcel tracking and electronic signature solutions?

When searching for organisations with the capability to provide parcel tracking and electronic signature solutions, look no further than Blackbay. These form just part of our comprehensive track trace portfolio of enterprise mobility solutions that enable your organisation to make the service and productivity improvements that are so critical to supply chain and field service operations. We currently manage over 140,000 mobile workers and over 6,000,000 service visits and deliveries per day. This demonstrates just how many organisations put their trust in us when it comes to empowering their mobile workers with our enterprise mobile apps and parcel tracking and electronic signature software.

Our solutions are underpinned by the need for track trace technology. This has led to many of the world’s leading logistics companies using our parcel tracking and electronic signature solutions and proof of delivery software to increase their efficiency, improve the quality of their service and ultimately drive revenues. At Blackbay we’re well aware of changing consumer demands, which is why we’re continually building on our wealth of experience in workforce enterprise mobility to develop increasingly innovative enterprise mobile apps that utilise the very best in track trace and parcel tracking and electronic signature technology. We never rest on our laurels so you can be sure that with Blackbay as your partner for enterprise mobility solutions, you will equip your mobile workforce with the tools to deliver unrivalled logistical performance first time, every time.

American Airlines Completes Electronic Flight Bag Implementation

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — American Airlines has completed the successful rollout of its industry-leading Electronic Flight Bag program with the discontinuation of paper revisions to terminal charts, making it the first major commercial airline to fully utilize tablets in all cockpits during all phases of flight. In April, American completed testing on its Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft and has secured FAA approval to use the Apple iPad on all of its current fleet types Boeing 777, 767, 757, 737 and MD-80.

An Electronic Flight Bag, which replaces more than 35 pounds of paper-based reference material and manuals that pilots often carried in their carry-on kitbag, offers numerous benefits for American and its pilots.

“Our Electronic Flight Bag program has a significant positive environmental and cost-savings impact,” said David Campbell, American’s Vice President Safety and Operations Performance. “In fact, removing the kitbag from all of our planes saves a minimum of 400,000 gallons and $1.2 million of fuel annually based on current fuel prices. Additionally, each of the more than 8,000 iPads we have deployed to date replaces more than 3,000 pages of paper previously carried by every active pilot and instructor. Altogether, 24 million pages of paper documents have been eliminated.”

All American pilots now enjoy the benefits associated with replacing their heavy kitbags one of the airline’s biggest sources of pilot injuries with a 1.35-pound iPad. The digital format also requires less time to update each of the six or more paper manuals found in each pilot’s kitbag, as manual paper revisions take hours to complete every month, compared to the minutes it takes for electronic updates.

“Our focus on technological improvement throughout our operation has never been stronger as we continue to build the new American,” said Patrick O’Keeffe, American’s Vice President Airline Operations Technology. “As the first major commercial airline to successfully complete the Electronic Flight Bag transition across its fleet, we are proud to count this among our other successful programs that provide the tools our people need to perform their duties safely and efficiently.”

As part of the Electronic Flight Bag program, American’s pilots use mobile software and data from Jeppesen, a unit of Boeing Digital Aviation. The FAA-approved Jeppesen Mobile Terminal Chart application is allowed for gate-to-gate use throughout all phases of flight and, with the exception of a few select documents, replaces paper operating manuals with up-to-date electronic information that is easier to access.

We congratulate American Airlines on the success of its Electronic Flight Bag program,” said Jeppesen President Thomas Wede. “Working closely together on this program over several years, we take pride in American’s achievements as it continues to eliminate paper-based materials in the flight deck, reducing pilot workload and increasing operational efficiency in a competitive business environment.”

American and the Allied Pilots Association (APA) began working on the feasibility of using a tablet device as an Electronic Flight Bag in June 2010, and American was the first commercial airline to receive FAA approval to use a tablet during all phases of flight in December 2011 on its Boeing 777 fleet. American has worked closely with its pilots throughout all phases of development that led to the program’s full integration.

Beginning July 10, American Eagle Airlines pilots will have the option to use Apple iPads to access reference material and manuals, making American Eagle one of the first regional carriers to adopt Electronic Flight Bags.

Cyber Security Tips for Traveling Abroad with Mobile Electronic Devices

Note: This web page is intended to outline steps, tips, and guidelines that you can use to protect yourself, your information, and your mobile devices when you travel abroad.

As part of a renowned research university, NDSU’s faculty, scholars, and staff often travel abroad for research, collaboration, continued study, or to present at national gatherings. When traveling to certain countries where there is strong scientific competition, the country is not on friendly terms with the United States, there is civil unrest or political discord, or where violence and crime ar prevalent, they may become victims of cyber-attacks, cybercrime, monitoring or surveillance. This is particularly true if the individual is engaged in classified or proprietary research in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program. Institutional leaders who ar politically or religiously active, fluent speakers of the language, and individual tourists may also be actively targeted.
