What Are Online Based or Distance Education classes?

Online-based courses, also called Distance Education classes, may take two different forms:

Online classes are taken exclusively over the Internet. Please note that, while some online courses provide all instructional content over the Internet, others may require some on-campus meetings. Please see the course schedule or WebAdvisor for more information.

Hybrid classes meet both on campus and online. Think of them as a combination or blending of online classes and face-to-face classes.

In a hybrid class, you will attend meetings on campus during the dates and times listed in the schedule of classes. Since the on-campus portion of hybrid classes could take place at any of our three colleges (Riverside City, Norco or Moreno Valley), hybrid classes are listed in the schedule by the college where the on-campus meetings will take place.

Are there Face-to-Face classes that use the Internet?

Web-Enhanced classes are traditional face-to-face classes that are supplemented with course websites and the use of Internet resources. Unlike hybrid or fully-online classes, all web-enhanced class meetings take place on campus.

Geological Engineers

Geological engineering involves geology, civil engineering, and fields such as mining, forestry and geography. These engineers apply earth sciences to human problems. Specialty areas include geotechnical site studies of rock and soil slope stability for projects; environmental studies and planning for construction sites; groundwater studies; hazard investigations; and finding fossil fuel and mineral deposits.

Geological engineers investigate things that are part of or are made to be part of the earth, including roads, mines and quarries, dams, petroleum production, railways, building projects, pipelines, and forestry operations.

They engineer clean-up and environmental assessments where pollution occurs. They survey for minerals and drinking water; they search for building material resources, and they map potential landslides and earthquakes. The variety in this field is enormous.

What do They do?

Many of these specialists consult for engineering or environmental firms. Many are employed by highway departments, environmental protection agencies, forest services, and hydro operations.

Construction industries depend on geological engineers to assure the stability of rock and soil foundations for tunnels, bridges, and highrises. Foundations must withstand earthquakes, landslides, and all other phenomena which effect the ground, including permafrost, swamps and bogs.

Geological engineers find better ways to build and manage landfills. They find safer ways to dispose of toxic chemicals and garbage, and to manage sewage. They plan excavations and design tunnels.

Transportation infrastructures depend on geological engineers to determine strong terrain and safe pathways for airports, railways, highways, and even pipelines.

These engineers are heavily employed in energy fields, exploring for more natural resources (oil, gas, uranium, tar sands, geothermal and coal). They develop ways to mine hard-to-access resources, and in the least polluting manner. They are responsible for the safety of pits, reservoirs and mining facilities, guarding against earthquake damage and environmental risks—even for nuclear reactors.

Groundwater is another geological engineering specialty. Industries and farms need reliable water sources, sometimes requiring dams or well drilling. Water supply to hydroelectric dams is regulated by these engineers; they design dikes and they work at preventing shoreline erosion.

Ore and other metallic mineral deposits (lead, zinc, iron, nickel, copper) are essential to transportation and construction industries. Geological engineers discover new sources of minerals, as present supplies diminish.

Becoming a Geological Engineer

A B.S. in geological engineering gives students in-depth studies in the humanities, economics, and social science. Graduates have the communications skills to be effective and responsible in meeting the social needs of their field. A B.S. typically is a 4-year course of study and involves laboratory work.

Courses include geology, structural geology, marine paleontology, paleoecology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, mineralogy and optical mineralogy.

Advanced degrees are needed to pursue careers as environmental, petroleum and mining geologists.

The senior-year capstone experience allows students to explore the technical facets of their specialties as well as the business of engineering—teamwork, project management, communications, ethics, and intellectual property. Teams experience opportunities with real, client-based projects that tackle problems they are likely to encounter on the job.

Geological Engineer Employment Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Mining and geological engineering positions are expected to increase by 10 percent between 2010 and 2020 for those with bachelor’s degrees. This occupation does not require the numbers of professionals that many other professions employ, but a growth of 10 percent is about average for all occupations.

Typical Geological Engineer Salary

Geological and mining engineering and sciences have a median salary of $84,300, and the top 10 percent earn $136,800 (BSL ).

Career Advancement Opportunities

Government agencies, both federal and state, employ geological engineers to develop and enforce environmental standards, and to conduct research. Post-graduate degrees open opportunities for higher salaries, research and teaching.

Is This the Right Career for You?

If you were a child who often picked up “special” rocks, or watched fascinated as creeks followed their course underground and out again, or as springs bubbled from the ground… If you tunneled in snow banks, built forts, footbridges or sandcastles… you were literally toying with geological engineering.

Still, before pursuing geological engineering specifically, it is a good idea to find your niche discipline—structural, environmental, or geotechnical engineering, for example.

Career-related experience is available long before graduation, and will help you better understand any field of study. Through co-op programs, students gain experience interning in their field of study, and some are paid.

Internships are another great way to put a toe in the water. Interns perform a broad range of laboratory procedures; they use computers to figure size distributions and generate plots and statistics; they do field work at sea, and make geophysical surveys. If these kinds of activities appeal to the explorer or builder in you, that’s a good sign.

Construction engineers are key cogs to successfully completing a construction project. Job Duties of Construction Engineers

A construction engineer wears many hats when directing and assessing a project. They will survey the area where the job is to take place, paying special attention to environmental issues or government codes that need to be considered. Before a job starts, they might prepare reports on their findings and consult with others who have a hand in the project. Those parties might include environmental associations, government agencies and third-party construction companies. Course Synopsis

Music Production – MP100/8.5
Introduces students to the basic principles of audio recording and music production through classroom lecture, and handson training, as well as guided and individual studio projects. Students learn about the principles of sound, signal flow, microphones, mic placement techniques, dynamics, large format consoles, and the entire recording process. Student must exhibit a working knowledge of audio concepts, facilities, and gear handling as a requirement for completion. Emphasis is on training for an entry-level position as an assistant engineer in a music production studio.

Music Production – MP200/9.0
Introduces students to the Solid State Logic 4000 E/G+ series console and computer, including theoretical console and computer study, pre-production, tracking, overdubbing, and mix down sessions. Students will practice extensive signal flow overview through application classes and clinics. Students will continue to refine the skills necessary to obtain a job in the audio industry through advanced recording and mixing clinics, using analog and digital recording mediums, and adding skills like automation. MP200 also exposes students to Post Production and Commercial Production. Through hands-on applications, students will recreate all audio elements for film and television projects using professional production techniques designed to prepare them for a wide variety of recording industry employment options.

Music Production – MP300/1.5
Introduces students to hybrid console technologies using the SSL AWS948 console and Pro Tools recording software. Students will engage in tracking, overdub, mixing, and mastering clinics. Clinics will start to introduce the concept of a “producer” into the room, providing students the most accurate real-world recording scenarios. MP300 classes will also teach students to start planning for internship and industry life, incorporating classes on personal networking, budgeting, and job interview techniques.

Audio Business – AB100/1.0
Offers students an overview of the music industry, including copyright law, publishing and song income, contracts, record production, record labels, scams and dangers, personal finance and many other industry-related topics.

Audio Business – AB200/1.0
Continuing the concepts introduced in AB100, AB200 classes focus on a deeper examination of the audio industry. Includes in-depth study of songwriting, recording and other contracts. Also examines trademark law, practical application of copyright law, contracts for engineers, career planning, interview techniques, industry etiquette, industry-topic forums and discussions.

Core Technologies – CT100/3.5
Provides students with a basic understanding of various technologies that are fundamental to many disciplines within audio production. Basic electronics, analog and digital audio, control protocols and fundamental computer and networking technologies will be explored in the context of audio production. Students will also see and use these systems in a variety of practical applications. During this course students will make extensive use of their laptop recording package, including Apple’s Logic Pro audio production software.

Pro Tools – PT100/4.0
Utilizing the latest Pro Tools software, students will learn about session and system configurations, audio recording, track and file management, session navigation, and editing of dialog, music, and sound effects. Students will work with real-time and offline plug-in processing, mixing options and workflows, auxiliary sends and returns, session I/O management, automation, and mix finalization. PT100 is accompanied by three hands-on proficiencies where students will demonstrate the skills learned in a practical, real-world environment. Optionally, students can attempt another 5 certifications in Pro Tools outside of class time.

Multimedia Technologies – MT100/4.0
Multimedia Technologies exposes students to a variety of additional employment opportunities in the audio industry. Classes cover surround sound, audio for video games, and live broadcast audio. Once considered non-traditional audio subjects, Multimedia Technologies are quickly becoming the largest employment fields in the audio industry. Surround Sound classes give students a hands-on opportunity to learn about surround recording and mixing along with an emphasis on the fundamentals of encoding and decoding audio for multiple delivery formats, such as video games and Blu-Ray. Students will learn how to incorporate audio into video games using Audiokinetic’s Wwise audio engine. This industry standard software is used on video games by almost every major game company. Students will also be exposed to the fast paced world of live broadcast audio. All sound heard on sporting events, evening news shows, and talk shows is called broadcast audio. Students will use the Studer Vista mixing console along with RTS AZ Edit configuration software to create their own live video broadcast event.

Live Sound – LS100/1.0
Prepares students to function effectively in the live sound reinforcement field. Includes overviews of sound reinforcementspecific equipment, basic front-of-house and monitor system configurations, design and philosophy. Live Sound teaches students how to setup small club PA systems, churches, and even large concert arenas. Due to the loud nature of the Live Sound environment, hearing conservation and protection is covered extensively.

Live Sound – LS200/1.5
Prepares students for complex issues in sound reinforcement via the use of state-of-the-art technology and concepts, such as spectral and FFT analysis, as well as shows control via multiple automation protocols. Also introduces the student to basic wireless transmission concepts and technology for wireless microphone, instrument, and monitor technologies. Students will use these tools for both music production and live theater applications.

Internship – IN100/7.0
Offers students the opportunity to obtain an internship at a facility of their choosing. Students on internship will apply their education to a variety of challenges ranging from facility support duties to working with clients. In preparation for internships, students will have classes and assignments focusing on resumes, interview techniques, internship etiquette, and industry networking.

Job Description for Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers apply their knowledge of various chemical properties to develop new chemical substances (such as fuels, lubricants, or cleaning solvents) or improve and existing ones. They may also serve as troubleshooters by helping to examine and improve industrial processes using the application of better chemical systems.

Many chemical engineers work for industrial companies which develop products directly related to chemical compounds. In this setting, they may work in product development, involving research and experimenting on chemical processes and formula weights to either develop or improve products which contain them. Much of this work depends on the engineer’s own background in chemical processes to understand safe compounds, as he/she may also be tasked with conducting extensive experimentation in a variety of settings to determine the utility and optimal use of these chemicals.

Chemical engineers also work to help reduce waste and inefficiency in industrial settings. For example, they may help establish benchmarks for which lubricants and fuels are used in machinery in an assembly plant, or proper holding, shipping, and dispensing procedures and equipment to avoid corrosion and wear-and-tear on existing equipment.

A college degree in chemical engineering or a related field may be required for this position, and many engineers seeking this career path begin with internships in school and then search for a junior-level position upon graduation. Chemical engineers may work in offices, factory settings, or even in the field, and some jobs are likely to require a combination of these. Proficiency with computers and automated chemical equipment, such as spectrometers, may also be required.

Chemical Engineer Tasks

  • Estimates time and cost to complete projects.

Very good work flexibility and low stress environment.

Pros: I have the ability to travel to various chemical plants within Clean Harbors organization and work with a team on solving various issues for any/all plants.

Cons: I feel underpaid for my position, and recently with company losses we have lost some perks (bonuses, stock plan, etc.)
