Cyberespionage and ransomware attacks are on the increase warns the Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report

NEW YORK – Cyberespionage is now the most common type of attack seen in manufacturing, the public sector and now education, warns the Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report. Much of this is due to the high proliferation of propriety research, prototypes and confidential personal data, which are hot-ticket items for cybercriminals. Nearly 2,000 breaches were analyzed in this year’s report and more than 300 were espionage-related, many of which started life as phishing emails.

In addition, organized criminal groups escalated their use of ransomware to extort money from victims: this year’s report sees a 50 percent increase in ransomware attacks compared to last year. Despite this increase and the related media coverage surrounding the use of ransomware, many organizations still rely on out-of-date security solutions and aren’t investing in security precautions. In essence, they’re opting to pay a ransom demand rather than to invest in security services that could mitigate against a cyberattack.

“Insights provided in the DBIR are leveling the cybersecurity playing field,” said George Fischer, president of Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “Our data is giving governments and organizations the information they need to anticipate cyberattacks and more effectively mitigate cyber-risk. By analyzing data from our own security team and that of other leading security practitioners from around the world, we’re able to offer valuable intelligence that can be used to transform an organization’s risk profile.”

This year’s DBIR – the keystone report’s 10 th anniversary edition – combines up-to-date analysis of the biggest issues in cybersecurity with key industry-specific insights, putting security squarely on the business agenda. Major findings include:

  • Malware is big business. Fifty-one (51) percent of data breaches analyzed involved malware. Ransomware rose to the fifth most common specific malware variety. Ransomware – using technology to extort money from victims – saw a 50 percent increase from last year’s report, and a huge jump from the 2014 DBIR where it ranked 22 in the types of malware used.
  • Phishing is still a go-to technique. In the 2016 DBIR, Verizon flagged the growing use of phishing techniques linked to software installation on a user’s device. In this year’s report, 95 percent of phishing attacks follow this process. Forty-three percent of data breaches utilized phishing, and the method is used in both cyber-espionage and financially motivated attacks.
  • Pretexting is on the rise. Pretexting is another tactic on the increase, and the 2017 DBIR showed that it is predominantly targeted at financial department employees – the ones who hold the keys to money transfers. Email was the top communication vector, accounting for 88 percent of financial pretexting incidents, with phone communications in second place with just under 10 percent.
  • Smaller organizations are also a target: Sixty-one (61) percent of victims analyzed were businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees.

“Cyber-attacks targeting the human factor are still a major issue,” says Bryan Sartin, executive director, Global Security Services, Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “Cybercriminals concentrate on four key drivers of human behavior to encourage individuals to disclose information: eagerness, distraction, curiosity and uncertainty. And as our report shows, it is working, with a significant increase in both phishing and pretexting this year.”

Business sector insights give real-life customer intelligence

This year’s report provides tailored insights for key business sectors, revealing specific challenges faced by different verticals, and also answering the “who? what? why? and how?” for each. Key sector-specific findings include:

  • The top three industries for data breaches are financial services (24 percent); healthcare (15 percent) and the public sector (12 percent).
  • Companies in the manufacturing industry are the most common targets for email-based malware.
  • Sixty-eight (68) percent of healthcare threat actors are internal to the organization.

“The cybercrime data for each industry varies dramatically,” comments Sartin. “It is only by understanding the fundamental workings of each vertical that you can appreciate the cybersecurity challenges they face and recommend appropriate actions.”

Now in its tenth year, the “Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report ” leverages the collective data from 65 organizations across the world. This year’s report includes analysis on 42,068 incidents and 1,935 breaches from 84 countries. The DBIR series continues to be the most data-driven security publication with the largest amount of data sources combining towards a common goal – slicing through the fear, uncertainty and doubt around cybercrime.

Get the basics in place

With 81 percent of hacking-related breaches leveraging either stolen passwords and/or weak or guessable passwords, getting the basics right is as important as ever before. Some recommendations for organizations and individuals alike include:

  1. Stay vigilant – log files and change management systems can give you early warning of a breach.
  2. Make people your first line of defense – train staff to spot the warning signs.
  3. Keep data on a “need to know” basis – only employees that need access to systems to do their jobs should have it.
  4. Patch promptly – this could guard against many attacks.
  5. Encrypt sensitive data – make your data next to useless if it is stolen.
  6. Use two-factor authentication – this can limit the damage that can be done with lost or stolen credentials.
  7. Don’t forget physical security – not all data theft happens online.

“Our report demonstrates that there is no such thing as an impenetrable system, but doing the basics well makes a real difference. Often, even a basic defense will deter cybercriminals who will move on to look for an easier target,” concludes Sartin.

    Some shockers, some expected results, and some huge news in the latest Magic Quadrant from the global analyst firm Gartner. In recent weeks, Gartner released a new Magic Quadrant (MQ)—Cloud Core Financial Management Suites for Midsize, Large and Global Enterprises—to help businesses understand the evolving and expanding market that is Cloud ERP.

    First Ever Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Core Financial Management Applications

    Up until recently, Gartner avoided building a Magic Quadrant for core cloud finance, due in part to the buying cycle that goes with core financial management applications. Many customers were not looking for an ERP upgrade in recent years, and the immense global players weren’t yet ready to move to the cloud. Now, however, there is a market shift to cloud applications, and CIOs, CFOs, and boards are finding that the cloud offers the security, uptime, and flexibility that they need.

    What is Gartner’s Magic Quadrant?

    Gartner’s Magic Quadrant reports are a culmination of research in a specific market, giving companies a wide-angle view of the relative positions of the market s competitors. The reports help prospective buyers quickly ascertain how well technology providers are executing their stated visions and how well they are performing against Gartner s market view.

    Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings or other designation.

    The Evolving Cloud ERP Market

    Gartner saw this, noting that there is a shift from static to dynamic, and there is soon to be $31B in play for cloud financial management and “postmodern ERP.”

    “The market for core financial management suites has been static for many years. However, over the last 12 to 18 months, cloud core financial management suites have matured to such an extent that they have disrupted this static market. This reflects the increasing prevalence of postmodern ERP strategies (see Schrödinger s Cat: How ERP Is Both Dead and Alive ). Postmodern ERP is the deconstruction of suite-centric, monolithic, on-premises ERP deployments into loosely coupled applications, some of which can be domain suites (such as core financials or HCM) or smaller footprint applications that are integrated as needed.”

    How Gartner Compared Core Cloud Financial Management Applications

    For this Magic Quadrant, Gartner defines core financial management suites as follows:

    • The core functional areas of general ledger (GL), accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), fixed assets (FA), project accounting, project costing, and project billing.
    • Financial analytics and reporting, including provision of financial information (such as P L and balance sheet) and the ability to provide financial information such as KPIs to managers and executives.
    • Basic indirect purchasing functionality (from creating a requisition through to purchase order processing and AP invoice matching and payment), because many organizations — especially midsize organizations — need some basic procurement functionality as part of a core financial applications deployment.

    The Results Are In: Upsets, Expectations, and Big News

    First? The shockers: Some of the largest and well-known players (SAP, Epicor, Deltek) found themselves in the “niche players” category—something that surprised Enterprise Irregulars contributor Vinnie Mirchandani. who said “I honestly cannot remember the last time SAP showed in the lower left quadrant – for niche players – in a Gartner MQ”.

    The Expected Results? Global Player Oracle showed up highly on the list for its Oracle ERP Cloud—a solution built to meet the needs of the largest enterprises in the world. This comes as no surprise, as the company displays immense market presence and had begun to make moves to the cloud earlier than many other global software players.

    The Big News: Intacct Named a Visionary

    The big news? Intacct was named a visionary. receiving high marks both for its completeness of vision and its ability to execute receiving the third and fourth highest marks, respectively.

    Intacct’s Completeness of Vision Blows Away the ‘Old Guard’ of Vendors

    Completeness of vision, the more qualitative of the measures, is based on eight components: Market Understanding, Marketing Strategy, Sales Strategy, Product Strategy, Business Model, Vertical/Industry Strategy, Innovation, and Geographic Strategy.

    This is a notable victory, but is one that plays into Intacct’s strengths and internal focuses. Intacct has a well-defined mission and business model, and has been known for its success within its market.

    Ability to Execute Only Surpassed by Two Giants

    While Intacct’s completeness of vision was impressive if not expected, the company’s position on ability to execute is notable, as it exceeded industry giants like SAP, Epicor, Deltek and Microsoft; companies whose operating budgets, global scale, and therefore visibility dwarf Intacct’s.

    In fact, when the only companies exceeding the ‘ability to execute’ are two massive publicly traded companies:

    • Oracle, with two options higher on the ‘ability to execute’ axis, does business on all seven continents (including Antarctica) and has a 209.97B market cap.
    • Workday, who has approximately a 20.5B market cap.

    Still, with only three vendors who exceed Intacct in ability to execute, Intacct’s notable focus and ability to meet the needs of customers demonstrates the company’s ability to compete and provide a powerful product to growing companies in the middle market, scaling with these customers as they grow.

    Conclusion: The Right Size and the Right Focus for Your Midsized Organization

    While many reports will focus on “ERP as a whole,” noting the largest platforms—both cloud and on-premises—this is one of the first reports that looks at applications ranging from midmarket to global, as well as looking at qualitative measures like vision.

    One thing Gartner does focus on when talking about Intacct is that while it is able to handle the midmarket, it can also scale with organizations, noting that Intacct’s successes:

    • Supporting individual clients that have up to 3,000 users, 600 entities, or 250,000 transactions per hour.
    • Supporting local reporting in over 80 countries.
    • Supporting companies like Guidewire, Marketo and GrubHub as they’ve grown revenues 5 – 10x and gone public.

    Developing a Roadmap for an Enterprise Information Management Program

    How does your organization manage its most valuable resource, information?

    Many organizations have begun to realize that the data and information they create every day is a valuable enterprise asset. It is difficult to imagine any enterprise achieving its goals without pertinent information. Those with accessible and higher quality information will make more informed and more effective business decisions. This is as true for all organizations since all enterprises need quality information to guide their decision-making and to provide optimum service to their customers. For organizations whose primary asset is information, this need is even more critical.

    Enterprise Information Management (EIM) is the set of business processes, disciplines and practices used to manage the information created from an organization s data as an enterprise asset. EIM functions ensure that high quality information is available, protected, controlled and effectively leveraged to meet the knowledge needs of all enterprise stakeholders, in support of the enterprise mission.

    Full organizational commitment to managing information as an enterprise asset requires the establishment of enterprise policies and the development of a support environment shared by the organization. That is what an EIM program provides.

    Even for organizations that have identified the need to manage information as an enterprise asset, determining what that really means and how to get started can be very difficult. The discipline of EIM is not as mature as some other disciplines that have evolved over time to manage the enterprise assets of money and people. The management of information is an enterprise effort, and cannot be left to each department or business unit without impacting the overall effectiveness and business value EIM can provide.

    It is critical to note that EIM is not a single technology or component but a framework of disciplines for information management across the enterprise (see figure 1). It is important to have this framework to guide the development and implementation of an EIM program. The scope, extent and scale of the EIM components vary across organizations due to the varying requirements, size, means and experience of the organizations. While all these components must be considered when developing an EIM program, not all will require the same degree of emphasis for every organization. The following EIM framework represents a very effective way to structure and manage an EIM program.

    The functions or components of an EIM framework are:

    Once these framework components are in place, the keys to an effective EIM program include business participation, business impact, technologies and education. Real and effective business participation means executives and key managers must not only be empowered with ownership, but with measurable accountability. Those charged with participating, due to their strong knowledge and expertise of the business must also define the procedures, polices, data concepts and requirements for the EIM program. The amount of business impact the EIM program can have on the enterprise varies from one organization to the next depending on their level of maturity. It is imperative that organizations define the business impact and measurement criteria from the beginning of the EIM program in order to quantify the initiative value to the organization.

    Organizations need to take an active and planned approach to managing their information to obtain the maximum business value and impact to succeed in today s business environment. An Enterprise Information Management initiative provides the framework and roadmap for an organization to achieve real information knowledge and true business impact.

    Gartner Says Demand for Enterprise Mobile Apps Will Outstrip Available Development Capacity Five to One

    Latest Enterprise Application Trends Will Be Addressed at Gartner’s Application Architecture, Development and Infrastructure Summit in Sydney, 20-21 July 2015

    By the end of 2017, market demand for mobile app development services will grow at least five times faster than internal IT organizations’ capacity to deliver them, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner forecasts mobile phone sales will reach 2.1 billion units by 2019, which will fuel demand for apps in the enterprise that meet the high performance and usability of consumer apps.

    Speaking ahead of the Gartner Application Architecture, Development Integration Summit in Sydney on 20-21 July, Gartner principal research analyst Adrian Leow said enterprises find it a challenge to rapidly develop, deploy and maintain mobile apps to meet increasing demand, as it is exceedingly difficult and costly to hire developers with good mobile skills.

    “Organizations increasingly find it difficult to be proactive against competitive pressures, which is resulting in their mobile apps becoming tactical, rather than strategic,” said Mr. Leow. “We’re seeing demand for mobile apps outstrip available development capacity, making quick creation of apps even more challenging. Mobile strategists must use tools and techniques that match the increase in mobile app needs within their organizations.”

    According to Gartner, employees in today’s digital workplace use an average of three different devices in their daily routine, which will increase to five or six devices as technologies such as wearable devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) eventually become mainstream. Many of these employees are given the autonomy to choose the devices, apps and even the processes with which to complete a task. This is placing an increasing amount of pressure on IT to develop a larger variety of mobile apps in shorter time frames.

    Despite this, a Gartner survey on mobile app development conducted in 2014 found that the majority of organizations have developed and released fewer than 10 apps, with a significant number of respondents not having released any mobile apps at all.

    “This is an indication of the nascent state of mobility in most organizations, with many organizations questioning how to start app development in terms of tools, vendors, architectures or platforms, let alone being able to scale up to releasing 100 apps or more,” said Mr. Leow.

    According to Gartner, there are four best practices that organizations can consider to successfully overcome app development challenges:

    Mobile development teams are overstretched and have difficulty effectively delivering the growing number of mobile apps in their queues. The result is apps being built on a first-come, first-served basis, with the line of business making the most noise having its needs met first. This lack of value-driven prioritization leads to inefficient use of IT resources and a degradation in the quality of apps delivered. According to Gartner analysts, mobile development teams need to formulate a process of mobile app prioritization that involves understanding the needs of business stakeholders. This will be a key factor in defining common criteria for evaluating mobile app projects.

    2) Adopt a bimodal IT approach

    Integration is often the largest part of the effort of delivering an enterprise mobile app, with many app development teams underestimating the time and resources required for integration during the planning stage of the traditional waterfall methodology they are following. Gartner believes organizations need to replace this traditional IT development approach with a bimodal strategic approach that supports innovation and agility to deliver apps more efficiently and quickly. Bimodal approaches consist of two models: Mode 1 drives the creation of stable infrastructure and APIs to allow apps to retrieve and deliver data to back-end systems without impacting those enterprise applications, while Mode 2 uses high-productivity, agile approaches to quickly deliver front-end app features required by the business.

    3) Use rapid mobile app development (RMAD) tools

    Using development tools that can produce apps more rapidly is crucial for enterprises to help bridge the gap between mobile app demand and supply. Significant innovation is driving this market and replacing traditional coding approaches, such as native development tools, with more effective RMAD tools. There are many approaches to RMAD, including drag-and-drop codeless tools, code generation and orchestration, model-driven development, virtualization, forms construction, and others. These approaches are allowing those with no programming skills or coding ability, such as people in business roles, to rapidly assemble mobile app prototypes and continuously iterate on these designs.

    4) Adopt a mixed-sourcing approach

    Organizations want to have full control over their mobile app development initiatives, however, maintaining a pure in-house development environment is difficult to achieve given mobile is a relatively new competency to many developers. It entails many complexities and specific activities, such as UX design and psychology or cellular coverage testing, which may be more efficiently handled by an outsourced third party experienced in mobile app development. Gartner believes organizations will improve their in-house mobile development skills over time, but currently only 26 percent of organizations are adopting an in-house-only development approach, while 55 percent are successfully delivering apps using mixed sourcing.

The owners are all very smart guys that know what they re doing, and I had the pleasure of working somewhat closely with Mike Herzog giving the ability to pick his brain with any questions I had. The employees there are all very friendly and inviting from the day I started. The company is very active in the community like to keep an upbeat vibe at all times, which I really enjoyed. I had to leave this company only due to personal reasons outside of the company, but would highly recommend this company to anyone debating employment here. Great company, group of people and all around atmosphere!!

    In the time I was there, I can honestly say I don t have a single bad thing to say about this company or anybody working there. All positive feedback!

    None. I am only writing more here because I cant write none. Some of the people are good people to work with. But they are all quitting so, not even that.

    Everything else. It s so unbelieveably sad that a company is devoting this much time to posting fake reviews to improve their image. About a year ago the company rating on here was like a 2. which is being generous. (check the timeline of reviews to see) They hired some marketing people who went on a campaign of having employees post 5 star reviews, and when those ran out, the owners and management started posting reviews as employees. Look at the cycle. Bad review. then a buncha 5 star reviews. Its so obvious its sad. But no one ever said smart people run this place. Their main marketing person just quit so we ll see if it keeps up. Since the end of July, 9 or 10 people have quit or gotten fired. In a little over a month. Thats out of like 50 total employees. The company had over 70 employees not too long ago. Company is tanking fast and the blame lays squarely on the shoulders of the owners. I have never in my life seen owners micro manage and be more in everyones business. Why do you even have managers? I ve also never seen owners actively steal from their employees. Take money making accoutnts from reps for their own gain. Know why? The company isnt making money. Stay far..far..far away. Terrible work enviornment, sketchy people, everyone is quitting or looking for work. I will be shocked if this place is even open much longer

    Advice to Management

    Be better. Don t stoop to the level of the owners. They bring everyone down.

    Being able to write my own check is the best perk about working here. The flexible hours and paid time off also help me not miss the important things with my family that come up. The company as a whole really teaches you every aspect of the technology business. The also pay for your certifications which are great to put on your future resume.

    The biggest con I have found here is the mental pressure of the grind. You have to stay motivated to put in your dials. It can be stressful working on many different deals at the same time. They do give you the support staff and means to close all of them though. To say that this is easy money would be inaccurate. Those that can though are well compensated.

    You have been doing great at evolving and changing the processes to help us utilize our tools that are available. I know you ll continue to do so. Thanks for the support and optimizing our skills to reach our goals.

    I worked with MES for over 4 years. These guys took the time to teach me everything they knew about the telecom game. I have learned so many valuable skills from these guys and not just work related. The owners take time to make sure you feel a part of their family. I have personally seen each and every one of them go far above and beyond to help their employees OUTSIDE of MES, meaning they reach out and helped many of their employees on a personal level. The facility is beautiful and has only been growing each and every year. These guys are the real deal and if you want to learn valuable skills both professionally and personally then this is a great place to work for you!!

    As there are cons with every job/profession they too have a few, but those cons were only my personal problems and nothing to do with MES. I just couldn t sit behind a desk and a computer all day, so for me personally i need a little more autonomy to do other things in my life. But again this was only a personal problem nothing to do with MES. In fact MES is great about working with their employees AND their families. Again they strive to create a family environment and are always there to listen and help when they can.

    Keep doing your thing and screw the HATERS. You guys deserve everything that you have worked so hard for since day 1.
