Information

Syco artists have been phenomenally successfull, selling more than 200 million albums and delivering more than 180 No. 1 records worldwide.

The phenomenom that is One Direction has meant Syco’s global presence has strengthened considerably in recent times. The group have sold 19 million singles and 10 million albums plus their feature film This Is Us has taken millions worldwide. Their achievements include two BRIT Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards.

According to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012. They were proclaimed 2012’s Top New Artist by Billboard.

Another of Syco’s most sucessful acts, the Irish boyband Westlife were anounced the second biggest-selling artist and biggest-selling band of the decade. The band have had 14 UK number ones and 25 top ten singles, consisting of 20.2 million records and videos in the UK across their 14-year career – 6.8 million singles, 11.9 million albums and 1.5 million videos. They left Syco in March 2011 to join RCA, Gravity being the last Syco produced album. The boys have since split and are persuing solo careers.

Syco now have a wide ranging mix of 25 artists on their books – with teen favourites such as boyband One Direction and Olly Murs catering for the younger market and Susan Boyle and Il Divo securing the older demographic. All genres of music are covered from pop, rap and R B to opera and country making Syco Music currently one of the most powerful global record labels.

Although generally focusing on contestants from its TV talent shows, in recent years, Syco have branched out, signing more diverse acts like singer / songwriter / producer Labrinth. In addition, they have now joined forces with other labels to maximise the potential of their artists. Current collaborations are with Epic, RCA and Columbia.

Utilising the TV branch of the company, Syco has been able to sign many acts from the hit shows it produces. Many of their succesful artists are former talent show contestants and have gone onto huge success. One Direction won a Brit Award for their debut single What Makes You Beautiful and Cher Lloyd has recently collaborated with X Factor USA judge Demi Lovato. Susan Boyle remains one of the worlds biggest selling artists with three smash hit albums to her name.

Syco made a batch of signings from the 2012 series of Britain’s Got Talent and include opera singing teens Jonathan Charlotte and cheeky Essex trio, the Loveable Rogues. The Loveable Rogues amicably parted from Syco in October 2013.

X Factor UK winners Little Mix and X Factor USA winner Melanie Amaro (in a joint deal with Epic) are also on the label as are X Factor USA 2012 runners up Emblem 3 and Fifth Harmony.

The X Factor 2014 winner Ben Haenow AND runner up Fleur East are both now signed to Syco. In addition, Britain’s Got Talent 2014 winners Collabro and runners up Jack Pack also have a deal.

Latest signings include Marlon Roudette and OMI whose 2015 summer smash Cheerleader has been a world wide sensation.

  • Olly Murs (joint UK deal with Epic Records and joint U.S. deal with Columbia Records)

Rebecca Ferguson (joint UK deal with RCA Records and joint U.S. deal with Columbia Records)

One Direction (full UK deal and joint U.S deal with Columbia Records)

Susan Boyle (full UK deal and joint U.S. deal with Columbia Records)

5 Games for the Road: How to Pass the Time With Nothing But Your Fellow Travelers for Entertainment

Subscribe to Our Under the Radar Newsletter

Your information will *never* be shared or sold to a 3rd party. Promise.

Bus and train trips, flights, delays in airports and train stations, hostels without TV or much light; the list of situations where a traveler has time to kill is long. That’s right — travel is not always exciting. There will be dull downtimes, and you may not always be able to read a good book. play road trip bingo, do crossword puzzles, or doodle in your journal .

That’s when you need a good repertoire of games to spontaneously play with your fellow travelers. Some will be popular games that you can find online and long-forgotten games from your childhood, and you might be surprised just how necessary they’ll be — and how much fun you’ll have — when you want to fill some of those inevitably empty hours on the road.

A quick confession: I’m a bit of a game geek anyway, and an English teacher to boot, so I’ve been known to start these games even at parties. But I promise that they have all been road tested on a real road, somewhere in Tunisia, Finland, Canada or Germany or any place where I was bored and without a book.

    #1 I Spy

You’ve probably all played I Spy a long time ago, but I recommend dredging it back up from your long-term memory. If you can’t, it starts off like this: “I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with A”, and the other players have to guess what object you can see. I’ve played this in hostels (especially those hostel living rooms that have trinkets from all over the world gathering dust there), on train rides and in planes, but it didn’t work too well in the desert. “I spy sand.”

How to play: I like to limit each person to three or four guesses. Otherwise, they’ll exhaust every item in the room that starts with “B” and you’ll soon run out of objects to use. I also like the jet lag variation — play it in a dark room at night when you can’t sleep because your body’s on some other clock, and see if you can actually remember what’s in the room around you.

    Mariano Kamp

    #2 Donna’s Alphabet Game

This is not the official name, but it’s the way I like to remember it after my old school friend Donna got a car load of us playing this on a stop-start motorway in southwest England. It’s simple, as long as you’re traveling on a road with signs (and even better, advertising) and these signs use our alphabet. Don’t try it in the western provinces of China, for example.

How to play: Logically, Donna’s Alphabet Game starts with A. Be the first person to spot the letter “A” in a sign and yell out the word: “A is in motorwAy!” Continue with B and get right through to Z. It sounds easy, but there will be a few tricky letters, and if you’re playing in a non-English speaking country then pronouncing the words will be a lot of fun, too. The way we play, there’s no winner — anybody can scream out the next letter when they see it — but natural competitiveness spurs everybody on anyway.

#3 Stadt, Land, Fluss: City, Country, River

This game has a German name because my German friends taught it to me — which is also perhaps why it always strikes me as being a bit intellectual, but still a lot of fun. It’s also a highly appropriate game for travelers to play because their geographical knowledge should be a bit better than average.

How to play: Choose three or four categories like the names of a city, country, river or lake. To be honest, I’m terrible with rivers so I always change the river category to something completely different — often food, because I like to talk about food. Take it in turns to challenge another player to think of a city, country and river all starting with a particular letter. If your friend challenges you with “D”, for example, you can win by getting out Dubai, Denmark and Danube in under sixty seconds — or whatever time limit you and your bored mates decide on.

    #4 Twenty Questions

An oldie but a goodie, and you can make it topical by restricting the choice of “What am I?” to be something related to the region in which you’re traveling. I did have a friend, though, who would choose objects like “pyramid” while traveling through Egypt or “chocolate” in Switzerland, and then we could have made it just two questions rather than twenty.

How to play: Someone chooses an object, and everyone else asks them questions about it, but the only permitted answers are “Yes” or “No”. (Or in my rules, “irrelevant”, if I think saying yes or no will send the guessers along a completely wrong path I like to play fair!). If you’re playing with a group, whoever guesses the item correctly can choose the next word.

#5 For RTW Trippers: Kalgoorlie, Balladonia

I think it was my father who started this game when our family took a driving holiday across Australia. We were gone about two months and my sister and I, being about ten and twelve years old, needed a lot of entertainment.

How to play: This game only works with your traveling companions, and only on long trips. It’s more of a challenge than a game, but it always works for me. Simply start with the name of the town you stayed in first. On our trans-Australia trip, it was the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. You then try to name every other town you’ve stayed in, in chronological order. My sister and I were experts at this all those years ago, but today I can only remember the first and second stops.

There are tons of other word and guessing games you can play in those bored moments of travel, and you can adapt these games with endless variations, too. And while it might seem like just a way to kill time, playing games like these is something I really love about traveling. It’s almost as if we don’t give ourselves permission to have that kind of fun if we’re at home in our “real lives”.

Anyway, I’m very keen to learn some new games, too, so leave your favorite travel game tips in the comments. I promise to road test them soon.

People say Thailand simply offers it all to travellers in a neat, great-value package — whether you’re an independent budget backpacker wanting to explore off the beaten track, or a well-heeled tourist looking for an exclusive slice of paradise.

Rough it while trekking through mist-shrouded mountains; be astounded by teeming aquatic life as you plunge into turquoise waters; or savour a romantic pool villa for a perfect luxury honeymoon — you can do it all in the Land of Smiles.

Thailand has been on the international backpacker beat for decades now, and while backpackers are making the most of ever-increasing budget flights to Thailand, these days luxury travellers bolster the numbers too.

From the food and spas, to the temples and culture, Thailand is a land steeped in fascinating Buddhist history, catapulted into the present through fast-paced economic growth that kicked off in the 1960s.

It’s true that more than 20 million tourists arrive here annually now, following the well-worn path of those before them. But there’s a reason the crowds keep on coming.

The capital Bangkok offers glittering temples on the majestic Chao Phraya River, with shopping for both bargains and top-range designer items luring the masses as well.

It also plays home to the backpacking mecca of Khao San Road — the epicentre of Southeast Asia’s backpacking universe.

Get to know an elephant or hike to see ethnic minorities in cool, mountainous Chiang Mai. then take a flight down south to sip cocktails and sunbathe on the palm-fringed southern islands of Phuket or Ko Samui.

Alternatively, let loose at a pulsing Full Moon Party on Ko Pha Ngan. or enjoy a spot of world-class diving off Ko Tao. What not to miss

Survey the World Heritage listed ruins of Angkor Wat. Take a sunset cruise off Phnom Penh. Visit the remnants of the Khmer Rouge regime. Eat fresh crab at coastal Kep. Trek through the jungle in remote Rattanakiri.

    When to visit

The most popular time to go is between November and February. There is little rain and it isn’t too hot. The wet season runs from May to October and isn’t the best time for a Cambodian beach holiday. The wet does keep the crowds at bay and Angkor is wonderful in the wet season, so it isn’t all bad. April is scorchingly hot.

    Trivia

Cambodian pop music features prominently in the music of Dengue Fever, a six-member band from the United States, who combine it with psychedelic rock.

For decades off limits to all but the most intrepid travellers, today Southeast Asia’s Cambodia is a popular destination for all kinds of folks: from independent backpackers who roam far into the hinterland to luxury tourists who stay in style and see Cambodia’s main drawcards between massages and exquisite French meals.

The ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s national treasure. The nearby city of Siem Reap has developed dramatically since the days when Angelina Jolie filmed Tomb Raider here and fell in love with the nation.

While some lament the discovery of Angkor by the masses, the site is still breathtaking and Siem Reap offers all of the comforts one could wish for on any budget. Those with more than a day or two to spend in the Angkor area will find a host of more obscure ancient temples and monuments which can be fascinating in their own right.

Many do simply holiday at Angkor and travel no further, but Cambodia has a lot more to showcase. Consider as well a break on the lazy white-sand beaches of Sihanoukville. a stay at a stylish resort in resurging coastal Kep. or a tour to the atmospheric, mist-shrouded Bokor Hill Station for a taste of Cambodia’s 1960s heyday. Meanwhile, several of Cambodia’s islands have emerged as terrific alternatives to the more developed Thai islands.

Many write off Phnom Penh. yet it’s a beautiful city, with a stunning colonial heritage, a gorgeous riverside promenade featuring a glittering palace, and a great selection of restaurants and bars.

Shopping here has taken off: trawl the stalls of the Russian market for “antique” finds, wispy organza fabrics and chic ceramics, stop in a few boutiques for home-grown designer clothes and get some leather shoes handcrafted at a bargain price at one of the city’s skilled cobblers.

The reminders of the horrific genocide perpetrated by Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge make for harrowing but essential viewing: do see Tuol Sleng and make a trip to the Killing Fields just outside the city for a sobering aside to your travels as you pause to remember the atrocities humans are capable of committing.
