Connecting to a Fax Server

In the Win32 Environment

To establish the connection to the local fax server, a fax client application must call the FaxConnectFaxServer function successfully before it calls any other fax client function. FaxConnectFaxServer returns a fax server handle that is required to call many other fax client functions. The FaxConnectFaxServer function can only be used only with a local server.

Note that a connection to a fax server is not required to print a fax document to a fax printer device context. An application can provide transmission information directly to the fax client Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) functions, and transmit the active document by printing it to a printer device context. The fax client GDI functions include the FaxStartPrintJob and the FaxPrintCoverPage functions. For more information, see Printing a Fax to a Device Context.

Call the FaxClose function to disconnect from the fax server and deallocate the handle that the FaxConnectFaxServer function returns.

In the COM Implementation Environment

If you are writing a C/C++ application, you must call the CoCreateInstance function to retrieve a pointer to an IFaxServer interface and create an instance of a FaxServer object. Then you must call the IFaxServer::Connect method to initiate a connection with an active fax server. The server connection is required before the application can access most interfaces that begin with IFax. (A fax server connection is not required to access an IFaxTiff interface.) For more information about creating a FaxServer object, and for a list of properties and methods, see IFaxServer .

If you are writing a Microsoft Visual Basic application, you must call the Visual Basic CreateObject function to create an instance of a FaxServer object. Then you must call the Connect method of the FaxServer object to initiate a connection with an active fax server. The server connection is required before the application can access most other objects that begin with Fax. (A fax server connection is not required to access a IFaxTiff object.) See FaxServer object (Visual Basic) for more information about the steps required to create the object, and for a list of properties and methods of the object.

  • Unlimited online fax storage
  • High quality customer support

  • About there being no notable cons at this time.

MetroFax is an excellent digital fax service and most of the feedback we have receive rates it as 5 out of 5 stars. You get 500 combined pages for $7.95 per month, which is a great value compared to our Market Standard of 300 combined pages for $9.95 per month.
You may also prepay for a year to bring the rate down even more. MetroFax s customer support was very knowledgeable and swift to answer questions. MetroFax offers a 30-day free fax trial.

*MetroFax is owned by j2 Global Communications along with eFax, Fax.com, Send2Fax, RapidFAX, SmartFax, TrustFax, and MyFax.

Faxing Plan Reviewed: eFax Plus

  • Save 16.6% when you prepay yearly
  • 30-day free trial period
  • Unlimited online fax storage
  • 24/7 phone customer support
  • Pages in plan aren t combined
  • High monthly fee for number of pages included

eFax has a good online fax service with the most subscribers of any rival, but its pricing is on the high end. Compared to our Market Standard of $10 per month for 300 free combined pages, eFax Plus is a bit more expensive at $16.95 per month for 150 incoming and 150 outgoing pages. However, eFax does offer the most features of any online fax service including e-signing, iOS and Android mobile apps, a HIPPA compliance option, international faxing capability and 24/7 phone support. Also, eFax added a large file sharing option that allows users to upload large files (up to 3GB) and send the link to up to 20 email addresses, where recipients can download the files. For users needing these features, eFax is worth the higher price tag.

*eFax is owned by j2 Global Communications along with MetroFax, Fax.com, Send2Fax, RapidFAX, SmartFax, TrustFax, and MyFax.

Faxing Plan Reviewed: MyFax Best Value

  • 9% savings when you prepay annually
  • 30-day free fax trial
  • 400 incoming and 400 outgoing pages included
  • Low monhtly fee for number of pages included
  • Unlimited online fax storage
  • Can preview your fax before you send it
  • Can create a blocked / allowed call list so that you aren t charged for blocked calls
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Pages in plan aren t combined
  • Experienced multiple power outages in June 2011, Jan 2012, April 2012, and January 2013
  • Experienced customer login issues in June 2011

MyFax has a user-friendly online interface and competitive pricing, although it has had at least four service outages since June, 2011. At $10 per month for 400 incoming and 400 outgoing pages, MyFax is a good option for those who fax regularly. Typically, MyFax only offers 200/100 incoming/outgoing fax pages at this price, but FaxCompare users can get this better value, by signing up using our links. Prepaying for a year will bring the monthly rate down further to $9.17. While MyFax customer support has historically been very helpful, we ve received lots of negative feedback about it as of late. MyFax has a 30-day free online fax trial period to test out the service.

* MyFax is owned by j2 Global Communications along with eFax, MetroFax
Fax.com, Send2Fax, SmartFax, TrustFax, and RapidFAX.

Faxing Plan Reviewed: RapidFAX Individual and Small Business Plan

  • 30-day free trial period
  • 1,000 combined pages included
  • Low monthly fee for number of pages included
  • Can send faxes from an unlimited number of email addresses and receive faxes at 6 email addresses
  • Hidden Fee: Charges five cents per fax per month to
store faxes online after 30 days
  • No phone customer support
  • Poor quality customer support

RapidFAX s special offer of 1,000 pages/ month for $9.95 to FaxCompare customers makes it a very attractive plan for people needing more then 500 pages per month, but the feedback we have received from users of the product has been very negative. Many users have complained about lost faxes as well as being billed after canceling. RapidFAX has a hidden fee that charges you for storing faxes online for more than 30 days. Phone customers support is technically not available. However, it has been our experience that if you call the sales number on the website, the person answering the phone will attempt to answer technical questions. Unfortunately, customer support didn t answer all of our test questions correctly. RapidFAX offers a 30-day free internet fax trial of its service.

* RapidFAX is owned by j2 Global Communications along with MetroFax, eFax,Fax.com, Send2Fax, SmartFax, TrustFax, and MyFax.

TrustFax is a little expensive relative to other online fax plans- most of their competitors offer at least 300 pages for less than $10 per month. However, TrustFax is one of the few online fax services that allows users to e-sign documents from their online interface. TrustFax s phone customer support representatives were knowledgeable; our emails that we sent were never resolved to our satisfaction. TrustFax has a 30-day free faxing trial.

* TrustFax is owned by j2 Global Communications along with eFax, MetroFax
Fax.com, Send2Fax, RapidFAX, SmartFax, and MyFax.

    What is Fax Thru Email?

Fax Thru Email is exactly as it sounds – an online fax service that lets you send and receive faxes via your Internet fax-enabled email account. With this fax to email service. you can choose a standard or toll-free plan, send faxes up to 20mb in size, and even access the service from your smartphone or other Web-enabled device.

    How does it work?

When you fax by email, it’s simple. With our Internet fax service, you simply put the recipient’s fax number in the subject line of your email, attach the file you want to fax, and click Send. Or log on to FaxThruEmail.com and work from the convenience of your desktop computer or mobile device. It’s like carrying a fax machine anywhere you go.

Do I still need a fax machine to receive faxes?

No. Faxes sent via fax to email are converted into PDF files and delivered directly to your inbox. It’s a format that’s ideal for viewing from a computer or mobile device. If you need hard copies, you can easily print them.

Are there any per-fax fees or other charges when using Go Daddy’s Internet fax solution?

No. Unlike some other online fax plans, we don’t charge an activation fee to open a fax account. And you get to choose a fax to email plan that fits your usage, so you don’t have to keep track of per-fax charges.

So how many faxes can I send?

That’s up to you. We offer three fax to email plans: 150, 300 or 600 pages per month. If you need to send more using an internet fax service. you can purchase additional fax page packs or, of course, upgrade your plan to the next level. We tailor our plans to fit your needs.

Where can I view my faxes?

Anywhere. That’s the beauty of using an online fax. Any faxes you send or receive are available right in your email account. That means your fax to email service remains available even if you aren’t in the office. It’s like having your own fax machine anywhere you go.

    Are my faxes safe?

Yes! You get your own Internet fax number, which you can keep private or share with important contacts. Even better, our online fax service lets you block numbers, if you don’t want to get fax by email from them.

Who’s a good fit for Fax Thru Email?

Well, anyone who uses fax machines! But an Internet fax service is especially useful for people who rely on hard copies of important documents. When you fax by email, your documents are always available right when you need them.

Real estate professionals might use an online fax service to send and receive contracts. And when legal professionals need documents quickly, an Internet fax gives them quick access to documents.

Our fax to email service is also a great way to clear space in home offices. Is your clunky fax machine taking up too much space? Switch to an online fax! A fax to email plan just makes sense.

Can I keep track of my faxes?

Absolutely. Your fax to email plan includes a Usage History, which lets you view everything you send and receive. It lets you know how many transmissions remain in your Internet fax service account. And if you run out, you can easily purchase and apply usage packs to your fax to email service.

How does it work with your other Workspace applications?

In a word, seamlessly. You can set up our online fax service to work with Calendar and Go Daddy Online Storage. That makes it even easier to fax by email.

You can set your Calendar to remind you when it’s time to fire up your Internet fax and send documents. And with a single click you can send documents from your Online Storage account using an online fax.

Are there any other benefits to using Fax Thru Email?

Yes, tons! For starters, think of all the trees you save by using an online fax. Piles of paper are a thing of the past with an Internet fax service.

An Internet fax also gives you extra security and privacy. With your online fax service, nobody can view documents without access to your fax to email service.

If you’re looking for convenience, Fax Thru Email is the solution for you. If you want privacy, you’ve got it when you fax by email. Using fax to email is also good for the planet.
