Student travel insurance

If you are a student planning a long summer trip abroad, or even a gap year between studies, then insurance is probably the last thing on your mind. But travel cover is essential whether you are heading to Europe for a few weeks or venturing further afield for several months.

Of course, you might think you can set off without student travel insurance, especially if you are young and fit with few valuables in your back pack. But could you really afford to replace your iPod, camera and holiday cash if they were stolen? And remember that medical treatment abroad can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Do I need an EHIC?

Anyone travelling within Europe should apply for a European Health Insurance Card, which entitles the holder to the same emergency care as a local resident. But the EHIC is not a substitute for student holiday insurance, as local care is not always free and not always of a high standard. The EHIC also does not cover repatriation to the UK in a medical emergency.

You can apply for the card online at www.ehic.org.uk. or by calling 0845 606 2030.

Check the levels of cover

It’s not always easy to work out how much cover you need. But MoneySupermarket recommends that your student travel insurance should include medical cover of at least 2m, in case you fall ill while you are away. You should also make sure your insurance includes the cost of an air ambulance in case you need to be flown home.

Personal liability insurance of 1m is essential. Plus cancellation and curtailment cover of at least the value of the trip. Insurance for your baggage and personal belongings will pay out if, for example, your backpack is lost, stolen or damaged. But check the single item and valuables limit as most firms cap the amount that you can claim for one item. There will also be a limit on the amount you can claim for lost or stolen cash.

Catastrophe cover protects travellers against the financial repercussions of a disaster such as the recent volcanic ash clouds. It’s also sensible to find a policy that includes end supplier failure in case the airline or travel company goes bust.

Travel insurers offer European or worldwide cover. European cover is typically cheaper, but you should always check whether your destination is classed as European as definitions can vary.

Single trip or annual cover?

Students can usually buy single trip or annual travel insurance. As its name suggests, a single trip policy covers just one trip, usually up to a maximum of 31 days. If you buy an annual policy, you can go away several times in any one year without having to arrange insurance each time. It’s worth comparing prices for both types of policy, but as a general rule, if you plan two or more trips a year, or you are heading long haul, then an annual policy usually works out cheaper.

Gap year travel insurance

If you are planning a gap year, you will need a policy that lasts as long as your trip. A variety of insurers offer cover for backpackers and it can run for a year or more. You should also check that your policy covers every destination on your journey, even if you are only passing through.

Extreme sports

Many students undertake extreme sports or adventurous activities while they are away. Of course, they are great fun, but they can also be risky, so it’s essential that your policy will pay out if you have an accident while you are white water rafting or wrestling with alligators. You will find a list of insured activities in the policy documents, but if in doubt, ask your insurer.

Working abroad

Some travellers work while they are abroad, perhaps to help fund the trip. Gap year travel insurance typically covers employment overseas, but manual work is often excluded. Again check with your insurer if you have any questions. Many insurers will also allow one or two return trips home under your policy, which can be useful if you get homesick, or perhaps need to break off from your travels for a family wedding or other occasion.

Take care of yourself

It’s important to remember that a student travel insurance policy is not a licence to go mad: you still have to take care of yourself and your possessions. Few insurers will, for example, pay out if your bag is stolen from the beach while you are supping in a nearby bar. And talking of bars, insurers can refuse to pay a claim if you were under the influence of drink or illegal drugs at the time of the incident.

Save money on student travel insurance

Probably the easiest way to cut the cost of your student travel insurance is to compare prices. MoneySupermarket’s free independent comparison service can help you to find the best policy at the best price – all within minutes.

Student travel insurance can cost less than 10 for a single trip in Europe. But remember that the cheapest policy is not necessarily the best as the cover could be patchy, or the claim limits could be low. It’s also worth finding out about the excess, which is the amount you have to pay towards each claim. You often pay a lower premium if you agree to a higher excess. But if you can’t afford the excess, why bother with the insurance?

Essential documents

Insurance is not the only essential travel document. You should also make sure you have a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your return date, plus any necessary visas. You can get advice from the Identity Passport Service website. or call 0300 222 0000.

Always keep your passport safe and make a note of the number, date and place of issue in case it is lost or stolen. It’s also a good idea to take with you a back-up form of identification, such as a driving licence.

Tips for a successful trip

Visit your GP as soon as possible so that you can organise any jabs or stock up on malaria tablets. If you are taking any prescribed medicine with you, make sure it is legal in the countries you plan to visit. And always keep it safe and in its original packaging.

Set up a secure email account so that you can regularly keep in touch with friends and family.

Book your accommodation for at least the first night to give you time to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings.

Stay away from drugs as the penalties for the possession or supply of drugs can be harsh in some countries.

Wear a high factor sun screen and avoid over exposure to the sun, especially during the middle of the day. And drink plenty of water.

Stomach upsets can ruin a holiday, so take sensible precautions. Find out if the local tap water is safe to drink and check that all food is properly cooked.

It’s a good idea to take condoms with you because they are not always readily available abroad and might not meet British quality standards.

What to pack

  • Keep clothes and valuables to a minimum but try to find space for the following items in your luggage:
  • First aid kit
  • Mosquito net
  • Insect repellent
  • Water bottle
  • Water purification tablets
  • Universal adaptor
  • Travel plug
  • Wet wipes and hand gel for hygiene
  • Travel sewing kit
  • Small padlock
  • List of useful contact numbers

Thread: Self Paced Associates degree?

With some planning you could go WGU and then when you get to 60 credits just apply them to any of the big three for your 2 year. You do not have to take classes with them to get your degree if the credits you have corresponds with their degree plan. There is some cost associated with this method and it doesn’t completely answer your question, but I thought it could possibly be applicable.

Since LilKatie24 is new here, she probably needs to know that the Big Three refer to:

Some of the degrees require a capstone of 3 credits, but the rest can all be transferred. Leak Detecting Services

How to Find a Water Leak

Our highly trained engineers at L.D.S. Leak Detection Specialists Ltd. will choose the approriate testing and inspection process specifically chosen to suit your home or commercial business to find the leak.

Our engineers at L.D.S. carry all the latest technology in leakage detection. We have listed the main Leak detection methods and equipment below. Inspection cameras. Protimeter mms damp meter survey kits, pressure gauges both hydraulic and digital and salts diagnostic kits also form part of the L.D.S. engineers equipment.

Leak Detection Methods to Find A Leak

Acoustics
Acoustic profiling uses ground and pipe sensitive microphones to enhance the sound of the leak. This method can help in pinpointing precise leak location.

Correlation
Is a way of finding and pinpointing leaks in water pipes. A leak in a pipe under pressure creates noise that travels through the pipe walls, the surrounding ground and along the contents of the pipe. Correlators are a very accurate sound testing device which are used to identify the acoustic frequency caused when a pipe is leaking. The correlator uses two identical sensors located along the pipe to calculate the leek location by logging the signal delay, sensor distance and the sound velocity.

Tracer Gas
The trace gas, a safe mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, is introduced into the pipe with the suspected leak. The gas, is the lightest in the atmosphere and is made up of of small molecules. The gas will exit at the leak and make its way to the surface where it is detected using gas sensitive detection pobes.

Thermal Imaging
Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermography cameras can identify problem areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye, detecting hidden water leaks. The infrared inspection camera can detect not only hidden water leaks and their origin, but also moisture that cannot be physically reached with moisture meters. Read more

Pipe, Cable and Metal Detection and Tracing
Often the exact position of pipes and cables is unknown due to innacurate or non existant network plans. In order to carry out precise water leak detection and to avoid damage to utilities and operators during excavations, it is essential to know the precise position of all services. We use high performance equipment which can locate and trace buried pipes and cables.

Network Monitoring with Noise Loggers
Noise Loggers are used for early detection of leaks in water supply networks. The longer it takes to identify that a network is leaking the more revenue is lost and the greater the loss of precious water resources. In addition to the more conventional methods of leak detection the installation of permanent noise loggers has proved to be a cost effective tool in early identification of water loss. By permanently monitoring sections of the system, which have previously been proven leak free, it will alert you when a potential leak does develop. Read more .

“A friend who is a maven in finding outstanding resources, recommended Janice and Custom College Visits as we began the daunting college selection process. We worked with Janice on two fronts; to help create a list of colleges and to set-up meaningful colleges visits. The college visits were also a lot of fun for us as a family and very informative on so many levels. More importantly Janice helped make the college selection process manageable, not so daunting after all, and we felt no stone was left unturned in this important decision.

Tracy P. Parent of a New York City high school Senior

Thank you so much for planning such a wondrous experience for our son. The careful attention to detail was evident at every turn. Custom College Visits planning effort provided an appropriate path of discovery for our son and for us.

Michael C. New Jersey parent of a high school Junior

Hi Janice, Our trip was a thoroughly enjoyable family adventure! Thank you so much for the unique opportunities that you created for our daughter at each college. Meeting with a student at Harvard, was probably the most informative way to start the entire trip. She devoted a lot of time (in the rain) providing real college life details. She swiped us into dining halls, dorms & buildings that we might not have seen otherwise. The sophomore session at Princeton was wonderful! Thank you so much for everything that you did! We really were able to get the most out of each campus visit! Best, Julie

Julie, Parent of a high school Junior in Southern California

I found working with Custom College Visits a very positive experience. They were able to pinpoint colleges that were best suited for my daughter and the travel plans were well organized. In addition, they were able to set up an interview with a member of a college color guard, as my daughter had expressed interest in going to a school that had a color guard. I am very pleased with my experience with Custom College Visits, and would recommend them highly.

Mark L. Parent of high school junior in Northern California

Lili got accepted into her first choice school today (early decision): Boston University! She is thrilled beyond belief and relieved as well. We could not have done it without your help, it was invaluable. I think the High School Honors program she did there was probably very helpful and we would not have know about it without your forwarding the information to us. You rock! So, I am tipping my hat today to both you and Lili!

Kim T. Parent of high school senior in Kansas

I am happy to tell you that Nivi has been accepted early decision to Brown University. She is the first ivy leaguer in our family and we couldn’t be more proud! Her decision to apply was made easier because of the excellent experience she had during her customized tour via your company so thank you so much! We will be sure to recommend you to our friends here..

Gayathri S. Parent of high school senior Chennai, India

Thank you again for being so good at what you do. Our trip to the US was a huge success. I was on the verge of cancelling the trip but knew I couldn’t let my son down. That I even found you on the internet was a direct answer to my prayer for a miracle. The itinerary worked very well. I knew I was in good hands even before I boarded the plane to the U.S. and your attention to detail far exceeded my expectation.

Egbe O. Parent of international high school student

We had a wonderful trip to Philadelphia and Boston thanks to Janice Caine of Custom College Visits. She worked out an itinerary from start to finish. We visited 9 schools and it was as smooth as possible. Janice worked out tours and information sessions as well as meetings with tennis coaches. We have boy/girl twins and both were happy which is not an easy achievement. Not only did Janice work out the schedule but she recommended great schools in both towns. We would highly recommend her.

Phil S. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

“Thank you SO MUCH for your involvement in the Splash Parents’ Program this weekend! I am just reviewing the feedback forms, and your presentation received rave reviews across the board; many parents cited it as the highlight of the program for them! Some verbatim quotes include: ‘The Planning and Preparing for College Visits was a great eye opener;’ Thank you for all the effort, energy, and enthusiasm you put into making the event such a success.”

Marisa M. Coordinator, Splash Parents’ Program Stanford University

Our college process was two-fold. It began with getting a jump start on the standardized testing, and not waiting until spring of junior year to focus. I believe our outcome was successful because we had a well-managed plan helped along by an expert, Janice Caine, of Custom College Visits.

Lisa L. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

Happy New Year! Wanted to let you know that Charlie was accepted to Johns Hopkins Early Decision! Great news and very exciting all around. Thank you for all your help.

Beth A. Parent of a high school senior. Massachusetts

Part Time Accounting Jobs

Part Time Accounting Job Overview

Maybe it only took you two days to memorize your multiplication tables, or perhaps you can add enormous figures without the benefit of the calculator app on your phone. If you have a head for numbers or an appreciation for detailed work, you might enjoy part-time accounting jobs.

Reduced hours give you more time for family, friends, and other pursuits, and many types of accounting jobs exist. You might work for a large corporation or a small firm, depending on your ideal work environment. Part time accounting jobs take many forms:

In small firms, part-time accounting clerks sometimes wear multiple hats. For example, they might form the company’s accounts payable and accounts receivable departments.

Part Time Accounting Job Education Requirements

The education required for part-time accounting jobs varies depending on the job description. Most positions require only a high school diploma, though advanced degrees help professionals earn promotions and higher salaries.

Part Time Accounting Job Market

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that accounting positions will grow at an average rate of 11 percent through 2022, which matches the growth rate of other industries. Although many accounting professionals work full-time hours, the BLS reveals that about 25 percent work part time. In some cases, part-time accounting jobs become full-time at a later date, especially if the professional starts work as a temporary employee.

Part Time Accounting Job Salary Information

Since part-time accounting jobs encompass several industries and positions, it is difficult to determine the average or median salary. According to the BLS, professionals in bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing earn a median salary of $35,170 per year in full-time roles. Part time associates command smaller salaries by virtue of their reduced hours and their pay rates are often expressed in hourly wages and not annual salaries.

Dohop travel planner – find cheap flights #one #stop #travel

#find flights cheap
#

If you are using Dohop.com’s flight search engine, there are a few things you can keep in mind to optimize and get the most out of the results. By default the results are ordered by price, lowest first. You can rearrange this order, perhaps by departure time if you want to catch an early flight, or by total trip duration to minimize your stay in airplanes and airports.

Dohop’s specialty is finding the best connections, ones that other flight searches won’t show you. Our flight planner shows you the best connections, but again you can limit these by using the filters. You can eliminate ground travel, reduce the maximum number of stops and disallow overnight flights. You may be cutting out the cheapest flight by doing this, but instead you might find the one best suited to you. Direct flight are the most tempting, since you eliminate a lot of hassle, but they are often not the cheapest flight available. For the cheapest prices, look for low cost airlines, and especially connections with at least one low-cost airline.

And using Dohop.com’s flight search saves you the time and hassle of searching for available flights on each of the airlines sites individually.

Panama City has taken its place as being the host to the world. Orlando’s theme parks are busy year-round, with the highest peaks coinciding with school vacations, including spring and summer breaks. Summer is the busy season in northern Florida. Florida remains a popular destination for spring-break vacations, and those weeks are busy as are long holiday weekends.

Book a Florida trip to the gulf side to see Clearwater Beach, Naples, and Sanibel Island – year-round destination spots with resorts, condos, golf courses and enough sand and sun to keep anyone happy. Mickey Mouse welcomes millions of tourists to his home in Orlando. and Daytona Beach traditionally serves as host to Spring-breakers. Further south, Florida flights drop travelers in Fort Lauderdale. West Palm Beach and Miami. where decadence and lavish lifestyles line the city centers. Simply put: Florida is a destination spot for anyone.

Cheap Flights to Europe – Find Great Deals on Flights to

#travel europe cheap
#

Cheap Flights to Europe

Getting around Europe

To find the cheapest flights to Europe:

  • Plan a one-direction trip, such as London to Amsterdam to Madrid. Then buy an open-jaw ticket where you arrive in London and return home from Madrid.
  • Look into a surface-sector ticket if you’re traveling some of the legs of your trip via surface transport.
  • Icelandair has some great airfare deals if you fly via Reykjavik. Aer Lingus offers deals for flights to Europe via Dublin or Shannon.

Europe is well connected by planes, trains and buses. It is easy (and cheap) to take trips between major cities in Europe, especially if you start or finish in the UK, Ireland, Germany, or France—all countries where low-cost carriers fly extensive routes.

Trains run throughout mainland Europe and, since the Eurotunnel, also connect France to the UK. Check out www.raileurope.com for tickets and advice as well as interactive route maps.

Buses (coaches) are readily available and a much cheaper way of traveling. However, they are typically a lot slower and often more uncomfortable than trains. Eurolines is a good low-cost coach operator to check.

If you’re driving, consider renting a diesel. Diesels often get better mileage and are a great deal in countries that subsidize diesel. Drive on the left in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and keep the speed below 130 kmph (80 mph) on the Autobahn.

Even if you’re planning on traveling independently, check out tours as many (such as a 1-day city or 14-day country tour) can be combined with independent travel.

Why you should take a flight to Europe

For history, fine arts, winter sports, beach resorts, modern cities, and charming villages, book a flight to Europe. Whether you’re heading to rich and sultry areas, or rough and rugged territory, travel around Europe is easy.

The changes in Europe’s landscape and climate are as dramatically diverse as the attractions. Book cheap international flights to Europe during the hot, dry summers along the Mediterranean or experience the midnight sun in Scandinavia. Trips to Europe allow travelers to explore historical sites, museums, cities, country villages, or retrace your ancestry. Maybe you prefer shopping, lying on a beach, scaling a mountain, or backpacking through remote villages. Which is better, a remote chalet or a vibrant resort? Perhaps there’s a country you’ve always wanted to visit: England. France. Portugal. Spain. or Ireland. Or maybe you just want it all.

The possibilities are endless when you book airline tickets to Europe. Whether backpacking for a year or just popping over for a long weekend to soak in a thermal spa in Iceland or catch the theater in London, you’re bound to have an excellent time.

Europe climate

Mediterranean summers are hot and winters mild. In central and northern Italy and France, the climate is more temperate with humid summers and cold, damp winters. Spain and Portugal can be very hot and dry in summer, with cold and wet winters. Winter in Madrid and Spain’s high central region can be quite cold. Central Europe has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot to warm and winters cold with temperatures below freezing. Snow can fall as early as mid-September in the Alps, and the ski resorts start opening in November and remain open until April. A continuation of the Gulf Stream (North Atlantic Drift) keeps the climate in Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, and Iceland fairly mild. Iceland’s climate is close to that of New York, and Scandinavia is more like New England or the Great Lakes region in the U.S. In the UK winters are cold and wet with occasional snow, and summers generally warm with showers. Most Europeans are on vacation in August. Some shops and attractions are closed in the cities, and the beaches and mountains are mobbed. Check your favorite travel website for tips on peak and off seasons.

Getting around Europe

Europe is very well connected by planes, trains and buses. There are regular flights between major cities, especially from busy airport hubs in the UK, Germany or France, where low-cost airlines offer cheap flights around Europe.

Trains run throughout mainland Europe, with the Eurotunnel connecting the UK to France.

Buses (coaches) are a cheaper alternative, however, they are typically much slower and often less comfortable than trains.

If you’re driving, consider renting a diesel car, which often gets better mileage. They can be a good deal in countries that subsidize diesel. The UK and Ireland operate left-hand traffic but in the rest of Europe they drive on the right.

If you’re traveling independently, it is still worth checking out tours (such as a one-day city or 14-day country tours) that can be combined with your itinerary.

Europe Travel Information

  • England’s scenery, villages, trendy cities and Scotland’s golf courses draw visitors to the UK. Reminders of the past and legends are everywhere, including paths of King Arthur and Merlin in Wales and Vikings and St. Patrick in Northern Ireland
  • Ireland has produced some of the world’s greatest poets and writers and remains a retreat for golfing, fishing, and hiking. The cities are young and vibrant; the countryside is peaceful and wears its scenery, ruins, and monuments with grace.
  • Germany’s cities are leading cultural, financial, and educational centers, and include two of the greenest cities in Europe. From modern to Middle Ages architecture, world-renown exhibits and performances, and the all-time best Oktoberfest, Germany is a country of many facets.
  • France is a land of variety: over 400 types of cheese, 25 languages and dialects, prehistoric caves, and the Louvre. France offers sumptuous beaches, bustling cities, quiet villages, and mountain resorts. And the cuisine is as diversified as the country.
  • The passion, culture, history of Italy —one of the few countries everyone knows something about. Whether your ideal vacation is soaking up the arts, visiting Vatican City, hiking, or luxuriating in a spa, you can find it in Italy.
  • On the Iberian Peninsula, step back from Spain’s beaches to find fascinating sights and charming towns. The world now comes to explore Portugal with its modern resorts and towns where old traditions remain the way of life.
  • The Netherlands has a rich history as a world power; Luxembourg has dense forests, medieval castles, and Battle of the Bulge memorials; and Belgium is a feast for connoisseurs and gourmands.
  • Austria has the regal buildings and culture from its days as the heart of the Hapsburg Empire. The country’s hospitality and cuisine make it a year-round destination, topped only with its winter sports, historic cities, and cultural institutions

United Airlines Flights Information

Hand Baggage Allowance

Each passenger is allowed to bring one carry-on luggage item as well as one small personal item for each flight. A traveler’s carry-on bag and personal item must be able to easily fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of them at the cabin crew’s discretion.

Maximum dimensions allowed for carry-on luggage are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm) including both the wheels and handles.

A personal item is generally defined as a purse, handbag, laptop or briefcase, book bag, or other similarly sized item. Maximum dimensions allowed for a small personal item are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).

Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage service charges apply at any point where bags are checked, although some customers are exempt from charges for bags within specified size and weight limits. Services charges for the first two check baggage items may apply for bags with a maximum weight of 50 lbs and a maximum exterior dimension of 62 inches. Any additional bags that exceed the maximum weight or size limits are considered excess baggage and may be subject to additional fees or regulations. MileagePlus members, active military personnel or their dependents may be exempt from checked baggage service charges for one or more of their luggage items as long as these items meet the weight and size requirements. This exemption does not pertain to group reservations of ten or more passengers or when the flight is not operated by United or United Express services. Passengers are recommended to carry all delicate and valuable items with their carry-on luggage, as the TSA is required to perform a comprehensive screen on all checked baggage. These screening procedures are not considered the liability of United Airlines.

Check-In

Check-in is available within 24 hours of the flight’s scheduled departing time. Online check-in is the recommended method as it is fastest and boarding passes can be printed from a home computer. A message containing a link to your boarding pass can also be emailed to most mobile devices or laptops to be shown to check-in staff. A United Airlines app is also available for smartphone devices and can be used to instantly check-in before departure times. Regardless of check-in time, all baggage must be checked at least 30 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international connections.

Boarding Information

Most domestic flights are boarded up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. With most US airports suggesting at least an hour and a half processing time, United Airlines recommends arriving at least two hours before departure. Arriving at the departure gate at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time is also highly recommended. Peak traffic hours at most airports are between 6:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Travelers should keep in mind that proper identification is required at all check-in desks, TSA stations and at the departure gate.

Frequent Flyer Information – MileagePlus

United Airlines offers a frequent flyer program, entitled MileagePlus, that has been voted the world’s best frequent flyer program for nine consecutive years by Global Traveler magazine. “Miles” are earned by purchasing tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals and other services. Credit cards are offered that collect MileagePlus miles through standard purchases and other bonus reward programs. Amtrak tickets can also gain MileagePlus miles as well as trips planned through United Cruises and United Vacation services. MileagePlus miles can be used to purchase United Airlines tickets as well as many other services provided by United Airlines and its partners. Flight upgrades can be made with MileagePlus miles giving passengers access to premium flight cabins, checked bag allowances and complementary premium beverages. These upgrades can be made before or after tickets and reservations are purchased, although certain benefits are only available if upgrades are made prior to check-in. Miles can also be used to book reservations at many brand-name hotels or pay for a membership to United Airlines’ United Club and Lounge located at many airports worldwide. These lounges provide free snacks, beverages and Wi-Fi for members and are also partnered with other airport lounge services to ensure that MileagePlus travelers have a private and relaxing atmosphere while waiting for connecting flights. Miles can also be donated to charities through United’s donation services. A complete list of charities is available on their website and covers a wide range of non-profits and other similar associations.

General Information

What would become United Airlines completed its first commercial flight in 1926 and eventually merged with William Boeing’s aircraft and carrier company to create the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation. By 1933, United was the first airline company to fly an all-metal aircraft, the famous Boeing 247. After merging with Capital Airlines in the 1960s, United Airlines became the USA’s largest airline company and remained so for many years. Continuing to control a large portion of American airline traffic, United Airlines also became the first airline company to fly the now standard Boeing 747 and after becoming employee-owned through a stock ownership program, became the world’s largest employee-owned corporation in 1994. United Airlines is based in Chicago, Illinois in Willis Tower (once known as Sears Tower) and operates over 700 mainline aircraft. The company currently boasts over 85,000 employees in the United States and countries around the world. As one of the world’s most comprehensive and longest operating airline services, United Airlines is one of the USA’s most traveled carriers. An average of over 5,200 flights are made daily to more than 350 airports worldwide and the airline has handled nearly 140 million passengers yearly since 2012. United Airlines also prides itself on being an environmentally sensitive corporation, flying the world’s first commercial aviation flight on certified bio-fuel. They have also campaigned to replace all paperwork with Apple’s iPad technology and have purchased over 100 fuel efficient Boeing 737 Max 9s to replace less efficient older models.

Ryanair

Bargain basement prices and an impressive network of European airports have cemented Ryanair s position as one of the most popular low-cost airlines around. The Irish airline has come a long way from its humble beginnings, flying commuters between Waterford and London, thanks to the business savvy of CEO Michael O Leary.

Why fly with Ryanair

How to Check-in

Online check in only. When you book your flight, you will receive an email with a ‘Manage My Booking’ link. Follow this to check in; from 15 days before departure if you’re feeling organised, or up to four hours before the flight if not. Checking in costs £7 for online bookings and £14 for bookings made at the airport or via their call centre. Print out your own boarding card before arriving at the airport, or you will be charged £70 for a re-issue. If you’ve paid for hold baggage, check in online as normal and drop your luggage at the manned bag-drop desk in the airport. Finding the Cheap Flights to Greece

  • Be willing to travel any day of the week. If your schedule permits, check a day or two before your optimal arrival and departure dates.
  • Check who is flying to Athens International Airport near your departure date; you may notice a new airline which will be offering promotional fares. You may also find a European regional airline that you never thought of taking before.
  • If you re thinking of taking a tour or cruise, see what airfare deals they offer and find out if you can extend your trip to allow time for independent travel.
  • Consider flying directly to Kerkyra (Corfu). Thessaloniki. Rhodes. or through Chania or Heraklion on the island of Crete. Airlines flying out of Britain and Germany have many direct flights to these locations.
  • Try an open-jaw flight – go into Athens but fly home out of Heraklion. Rhodes, Thessaloniki or Kerkyra.
  • Check 3-5 different resources before clicking that Pay button anywhere. Recent test searches on a half-dozen sites brought me lowest price listings from $953 to $1842 – for a trip being booked four months in advance. Results constantly change, but for my test trip departing from San Diego to Heraklion, Crete, done within minutes of each other, these were the results:

How to Find Cheap Flights to Mexico

You can find an inexpensive flight to Mexico anytime except between January and April. (Photo: mexico scenery image by Cosette from Fotolia.com )

Related Articles

It s important to be flexible when looking for a cheap flight to Mexico. When it s cold up north, everyone wants to head south, so the cheapest fares aren t going to be available between January and April. The best time to visit Mexico is between September and December or from late April until the end of June.

Step 1

Buy your tickets early. According to Brian Elk of Priceline.com, I think most airline sources would agree that anything outside 21 days before takeoff is considered an advance-purchase ticket. Airlines are different, but generally, once you hit 15 days before the flight, the price begins to go up, then it goes up again at the seven-day mark. So if you want a retail ticket, buy it at least 21 days out for the best price.

Step 2

Fly into Mexico City. According to the website Experience San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City offers the greatest choice of schedules, connections and airline. If you intend to visit Mexico City in addition to your other destinations, flying here first is the often the cheapest option. Also, if you are on a very small budget and don t mind spending time on a bus, you can fly into Mexico City and take a bus to your destination.

Step 3

Fly in the fall. According to Experience San Miguel de Allende, Traveling in the off-season can save you big bucks. American Airlines and others often run all-Mexico specials in the fall, so check them for a cheap Mexico flight. Other airlines also try to match these rates, so call other airlines to see if they ll match or beat this special.

Step 4

Visit your favorite airline s website constantly. Visit more than one airline s website and also travel websites that specialize in selling tickets, such as Orbitz and Travelocity. Subscribe to their email newsletters or their RSS feeds. You might find a cheap rate to Mexico suddenly appears in your email in box one morning.

Step 5

Travel at off times, whether that means the middle of the week or early in the morning. Being flexible in your travel times will help you get the best deal. If you want to travel over Thanksgiving, be flexible enough to travel on Thanksgiving at 5 am. You can save a lot of money by changing your personal itinerary to the whims of an airline deal.

Fly on a Mexican airline. Budget airlines have become very popular in Mexico, as they have in other countries, and flying on one can save you a lot of money. Two of these Mexican budget airlines, Avolar and Volaris, have flights to Le n, Mexico, from Tijuana, which is just over the border from California.

Subscribe to the Twitter feeds of airlines, travel websites and blogs you like, and even ones you don t like. Great travel deals are often tweeted to generate interest.

How to Find Inexpensive Airfare Online #cheap #cheap #airline #tickets

Cheap Flights 101

Back in the Middle Ages of air travel, airlines used to publish their rates in telephone-book-sized compendiums updated every few weeks, and your trusty travel agent would actually get on the phone to reserve your seat. Nowadays, fares change as often as the weather in New England. The good news? Ever-evolving technology now lets airlines sell unused seats at the last minute at a variety of venues, producing some of the cheapest prices ever. The bad news? With a glut of information out there, finding these fares can be a bewildering, confusing, and downright frustrating experience.

There is no magic formula for always finding the cheapest fares, says Terrance Zepke, author of the Encyclopedia of Cheap Travel. Comparison shopping is the name of the game. But don t take that to mean you should spend more time hunting for your vacation airfare than you ll actually spend on vacation. We won t lie to you; the world of inexpensive airfares is dog-eat-dog. But follow these efficient steps, learn some simple tricks, and with a little bit of luck, you will excel in sniffing out the best online airfare deals.

SIX STEPS TO CHEAP TICKETS

#1: FIGURE OUT THE BEST TIME TO BUY

Your first step to airfare success is to determine the best time to buy your tickets. If you absolutely must get home to Mom for Thanksgiving or to Courchevel before Lance passes through the age-old advice still holds true: Buy your tickets at least three weeks in advance.

I think most airline sources would agree that anything outside 21 days before takeoff is considered an advance-purchase ticket, says Brian Ek of Priceline.com. Airlines are different, but generally, once you hit 15 days before the flight, the price begins to go up, then it goes up again at the seven-day mark. So if you want a retail ticket, buy it at least 21 days out for the best price. Consider buying retail and buying early for vacation destinations during popular seasons or during high-traffic holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and spring break in March.

However, if your trip to Whistler can wait a weekend or Mom doesn t mind you arriving on Thanksgiving day rather than the day before, consider changing your strategy. Timing when you fly is just as important as when you buy. Though airfares can be fickle and inconsistent, cheaper flights are typically available on weekdays, as opposed to weekends, and during non-rush hours. If you can t avoid major holidays, like Christmas, New Year s, Thanksgiving, national long-weekend holidays, and spring break periods in March, a good rule of thumb is to try to travel when everyone else doesn t want to. Think Christmas Eve or day, Thanksgiving day or a week ahead of time. Besides, flying on a holiday is typically more relaxed the airports and planes are usually less crowded, and the we re all in this together atmosphere can lend to an easy-going travel experience.

How to Find Great Vacation Deals for Beach Rentals

Smart shopping and advance planning can yield bargain beach rentals. (Photo: sandy beach scene on pensacola beach image by Edward Cooper from Fotolia.com )

Related Articles

For many people, the ultimate vacation is relaxing on a beach in the sun. Because beach vacations are so popular, prices can be extremely high to rent a hotel room or condo directly on the beach. But great beach vacation rental deals are available to those who know where to look.

Step 1

Consider military options. If anyone in your traveling party is an active duty or retired military or civilian Department of Defense member, you may be eligible to use military resorts and other perks. Many military resorts, such as those located at Camp Pendleton in California and on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, are directly on the beach. Rates are determined by pay grade, but even the highest rates are much lower than those charged at surrounding civilian resorts.

Step 2

Consider a timeshare membership. Traditional timeshares entitle you to use the same condo during the same week each year. If you prefer more variety, consider buying into a points-based system. Your membership fee entitles you to a certain number of points each year that can be used at any resort within the timeshare system at any time you like. Weekend nights generally cost more points than mid-week stays, and holidays are the priciest.

If you want the benefits of a timeshare but not the commitment, consider renting from a membership owner. When owners are unable to use their points, they often rent to non-members in exchange for cash. Search the Internet for rental communities that match owners and renters.

Step 3

Look for private rentals. Many families own vacation cottages or condos at the beach that they use only a few times per year. When not in use by the family, those properties are often rented to vacationers through property management companies. Although some properties may be listed on the management company s website, call and speak with a representative to find the best deal on the type of property you desire.

Step 4

Check into all-inclusive vacation packages. Although the initial sticker price might seem high, all-inclusive packages allow you to pay one bill in advance to cover your entire vacation. All-inclusive vacations typically include lodging, meals, activities, entertainment and even gratuities. Choose a traditional all-inclusive resort or create your own package at a major travel website such as Orbitz or Expedia. You can even include airfare and a rental car in the package price. Packages often include perks that are not available when booking everything separately, such as free nights or a major discount on airfare.

How to Find Great Deals on Vacation and Travel

March 31st, 2009 (by J.D. Roth )

Comments (56)

My wife and I have begun to explore the idea of taking a trip later this year. We re in the preliminary stages of our research and budgeting. Though we aren t ready to book anything yet, it s fun to look at what s available, and to dream of where we might go.

Over the weekend, I polled my followers on Twitter to ask their advice for finding great travel deals. Here are some of the tips and websites they recommended. I m sure I ll refer to this list often in the coming months.

You might also consider a home exchange with another vacationing family. You can broker these sorts of deals through sites like HomeLink and HomeExchange .

Airfare Watchdog allows you to receive daily or weekly e-mail updates about travel between destinations you choose. (My first e-mail included a $98 round-trip from Portland to Baltimore.) The site features its top 50 fares of the day. as well as a special fare of the day. You can even read the Airfaire Watchblog to keep up-to-date on the latest deals.

Rick Steves is a travel guru who is featured prominently on public broadcasting, both television and radio. His advice is down-to-earth and geared toward folks who want to experience Europe through the back door .

A recent New York Times article offered some great tips for saving on airfare. even after you book your tickets. The article mentioned a site called Yapta . which will automatically watch to make sure you re getting the best deal:

Using your confirmation number, Yapta.com will automatically track the price of your ticket, taking the airline’s fees into consideration. If the price drop exceeds the fee, Yapta will send you, without charge, an e-mail message or Twitter alert notifying you of the refund. You can then call the airline to claim the credit or pay $15 to have Yapta do it for you on weekdays.

Yapta is basically PriceProtectr for air travel.

Richard F. a veteran of many cruises, shared the following tip via e-mail:

Our upcoming Alaska cruise was base priced at $399 a week, leaving from Vancouver. We discovered it was cheaper to do the return leg, from Whittier (outside Anchorage) back to Vancouver, than it would have been book a flight from Anchorage to Vancouver. So we re taking two weeks, the second retracing our steps. These are the best prices we ve seen for cruises in years.

Though I m usually not a cruise kind of guy, I might consider one if the costs were low enough. Here are some additional travel tips shared by Get Rich Slowly readers:

While the information I ve collected here is useful to a novice like me, it s probably too basic for anyone who travels often. If you re interested in advanced travel information, visit my pal Chris Guillebeau at The Art of Non-Conformity. It s his goal to visit every country on Earth by 2013. Chris has produced two fantastic e-books based on his experiences:

  • The Unconventional Guide to Discount Airfare
  • How to Become a Travel Ninja

It s fun to play with these travel sites and to dream of where I might go: England, Antarctica, Australia. But to be honest, the more I think about it, the more appealing it sounds to just book a cheap rental home on the Oregon Coast. The important part of the vacation is spending time alone with my wife, not luxury hotels and fancy restaurants.

Do you have tips for finding great travel deals? Are there web sites you swear by? What are your favorite vacation ideas? How often do you travel, and where do you go? What tips can you offer to GRS readers?

Note: If you d like to help build future Get Rich Slowly posts, follow me on Twitter. I also tweet about personal-finance stories I discover (and a little about my daily life).

GRS is committed to helping our readers save and achieve their financial goals. Savings interest rates may be low, but that is all the more reason to shop for the best rate. Find the highest savings interest rates and CD rates from Synchrony Bank. Ally Bank. GE Capital Bank. and more.

The Best Way to Find a Cheap Airplane Ticket, According to Two Guys Who Set Fares

Photograph by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Travelers often bemoan the gambling in airline ticket-shopping: Do I buy now or wait to see if the fare decreases? One reason for that casino feel is the computerized alchemy of what’s known as revenue management, the airlines’ 24/7 effort to improve their financial performance by meticulously allocating the number of seats at various price levels and overbooking flights.

It’s an algorithm-based field of math and computer science that is, literally, akin to rocket science. A typical day’s operation for the average global airline involves roughly 100 million fares to be analyzed and managed, says Bill Brunger, chief executive of PODS Research, a revenue management consultancy and a former vice president of Continental Airlines (UAL ). He and Scott Nason, a former vice president of revenue management at American Airlines, discussed the dark arts of airfare pricing on Tuesday at a conference hosted by Airlines for America, the U.S. carriers’ trade group in Washington. (Nason also runs a revenue-management consulting firm, SDN TT H Consulting, in Dallas.)

Advance-purchase rules help segment airline seat prices into different market categories, with a single flight often having 20 or more fares. That model—with purchase deadlines of one to 90 days—helps revenue managers deal with seat inventory that usually comes onto their books a year before the departure date. Fares that are booked 21 days early, for example, generally cost less than fares bought a week or less before travel. Airlines also overbook most flights. The amount of no-show passengers has been remarkably stable over the years, so carriers can predict which routes and days correspond to a high number of absentee fliers. It’s also financially lucrative—overbooking accounts for 2 percent to 4 percent of the industry’s entire revenue, Brunger said.

And if you think buying vacation flights nearly a year in advance will help you get the best ticket price, it won’t. “They don’t know too much” a year out, says Brunger. “When revenue management people are nervous they usually pick a default level that’s conservative.”

As the shopping season for Thanksgiving and Christmas travel approaches, here are a few ideas from the two airfare experts:

1. Book early-ish. Hardly an exact metric, Brunger concedes, but it means not waiting too long, hoping that an airline will have too many empty seats on the flight you want three to four weeks before departure and get desperate to sell them. (That’s exceedingly rare, and means something went wrong for the revenue manager.) The closer you get to the advance-purchase deadlines, the more clarity airlines usually have on their pricing forecasts. When it works as planned, revenue management means an airline has sold exactly the number of seats at each fare level that it had intended—closer to departure, the seats that are left cost far more.

2. Book at a price satisfactory to you. If you can live with the cost and it seems decent, take the plunge. “If the fare feels like a fairly good fare, I would buy,” Nason said.

3. Stop looking. You don’t need to keep shopping a flight you’ve purchased, see the price drop, and feel like a dope. (And airlines are much less likely to refund you the savings than they used to be.) Sure, there’s an argument to be made that such a painful education may help you become a better airfare shopper, but few people are obsessive or patient enough to keep tabs on routes’ pricing at all times. Said Brunger: “Buyer’s remorse is a real thing.”

Top Credit Cards with Balance Transfer

Promotional Financing Spurs Buying Decisions, Says Survey
September 10, 2015

When making major purchases—spending $500 or more—people are swayed by promotional financing offers, such as credit cards that carry a 0% APR for the first year or longer. A consumer study from Synchrony Financial showed that 75% of cardholders look for promotio[. ]

QUESTIONS about cards

Q Do store credit cards help build credit.

Store credit cards do help people with poor credit establish or rebuild their credit history if used carefully and wisely.[. ]

Having a plastic with a high APR is not profitable: most part of your payments go for covering your interest. The excellent method of reducing finance charge is to apply for a balance transfer credit card. It gives you the opportunity to put an instant freeze on your interest payments and attack your outstanding credit card balance.

If you have several debts, you can consolidate them on one less-costly balance transfer credit card. You will have only one payment rather than several to worry about. Be attentive to the limit of your new plastic – it should be high enough to accommodate your debts fully.

Sometimes credit companies charge a balance transfer fee. It can be a flat rate, for example $30, or a percentage of the amount you will transfer – from 1% to 5%. The first variant can be more beneficial if your balance is large.

Balance transfer credit cards can differ in their features. Don’t hurry: compare all perks and benefits. There are various offers with moderate fees, lucrative rewards program and reasonable APR on purchases. Check all offers at AllAboutCredit.net and find the most suitable plastic for yourself!

Balance transfer credit cards come with low or 0% interest rates for a fixed period of time or for the life of your balance. The decision which credit card deal to choose depends on your financial needs.

Credit cards with low or 0% introductory rates are mainly targeted at people who want to pay off their debt in full within the introductory period. It can last from 6 to 12 months, but you can find special offers which come with an introductory period of up to 15 months.

Having zero introductory APR is a good start of your relationships with a new credit company. If you make on time payments and do not max out your credit limit, you will prove to be a valuable and reliable customer and improve your credit score. It is an excellent reason for negotiating a low interest rate when your introductory period is over.

Balance transfer credit cards with a fixed APR can be a good choice for people who have a heavy debt that requires a long time to be paid in full. Despite of the fact that these plastics do not offer tempting zero interest rates, you can be sure that your APR remains low for the life of your balance. It may turn to be more beneficial in the long run.

No matter which APR is more suitable for you – fixed or introductory, you can always find the best balance transfer credit card offers on AllAboutCredit.net. We have collected a great selection of the most attractive offers from major US credit companies, for example MasterCard or Discover. Choose the card that matches you best and apply online!

Cheap Flights to Orlando, Florida

Best Time to Fly to Orlando

Orlando’s theme parks are popular year round, regardless of the weather. But like any hot tourist destination, there are high and low travel times.

Peak Season: More than the weather, school vacations determine Orlando’s peak seasons. The busiest times are Christmas, March spring break, Easter week, and mid-June to mid-August. Book Orlando flights and resort accommodations early if you’re traveling during peak season. Airfare prices for Orlando flights and hotels are higher and the city itself is more crowded.

Off Season: The best time to find a cheap airline tickets to Orlando is late May or early June (excluding Memorial Day weekend), as soon as the school year ends; late August, if you must go in summer; or Thanksgiving, which is not as busy as other holidays. There are fewer tourists at the parks from early September until just before Thanksgiving, as well as in early February and early May.

Why you should take a flight to Orlando

Because the magic of Disney World and other theme parks, like Universal Studios and SeaWorld, are often considered the essence of the city, Orlando trips get associated with all children, all the time. However, flights are also filled with plenty of adults who come to experience Orlando’s restaurants, nightclubs and trendy downtown scene. As the city grows in prominence, even more travelers are booking Orlando airfare to enjoy the culture of this urban escape.

A mouse, a duck, one goofy dog, a couple princesses, some fish, a Mermaid, a handful of pirates and a few Prince Charmings call Orlando home. And those are just the characters you’ll meet on the street! Start at the Magic Kingdom and walk down Main Street and you never know who you’ll run into.

Careful when booking  – the city sees some steep tourist seasons. Orlando flights and hotels are usually jacked up, and it’s essential to book months in advance. Step off your plane and enter a world of make-believe, magic and dreams come true. Cheap plane tickets to Orlando will leave you rich with memories.

Choosing An Employer

With the consulting regime conquering the IT scenario, many OPT (Optional Practical Training) employers are in the fray to make a quick buck. So one needs (especially OPT students) to be very cautious and careful while choosing an OPT employer or OPT work. Having a good employer is very vital so as to avoid any legal, payments, and immigration issues in the future and of coz getting work assignments at reputed companies by not being on bench for too long.

Before you set about stumbling upon an OPT employer, one needs to ascertain what his/her short-term goals are. Is it huge pay / getting placed soon. Many OPT employers entice employees with good % billing rates. One should never fall into such kind of traps especially when you are starting your career in consulting. The following are the important features one needs to consider when he/she chooses an employer:

My Job Search Process

As an OPT (Optional Practical Training) International Student, I had been in the same shoes are you were few years ago. I graduated from Chemical engineering from Bangalore University. I saw the trend was to start reading GRE and Toefl and plan to go to USA. Well since the job market in India was not that great, so thought why not follow the trend. Landed in US and joined master’s program in Computer Science. With 9/11 and bad economy, there were no chances of funding or even getting on-campus jobs. Somehow my luck favored and I got my first on campus job in few months. Then got my Assistantship, then my Internship and was ready to graduate.

Job market was still worse. More then job market I didn’t have a mentor to guide me through the OPT/CPT job search process. My friends were in the same boat as I was.

OPT Student Switching from Non IT to IT

Well that’s a tough one…For OPT Students in the conventional majors and who bagged the OPT Jobs in their fields of study…its not at all concern for them to think about this shift at least for the time being. However this thought might arise in them once they settle down in their job and start feeling the ennui about their daily routine due to the lack of freshness or adventure. Also the lure of big pay packets is one main thing that attracts them to IT. Along with these there might be Junta who is really interested in programming stuff, web designing, has the curiosity to learn more about the business side, about finance and IT integration etc which lures them into the IT sector.

There are many OPT Students who couldn’t grab/take the OPT Jobs in their major of study due to various reasons such as economical downturn, H1 cap reached by the time they got their job etc.

5 Sneaky Ways to Find Dirt Cheap Airfare – Business Pundit

#how to find cheap flights

5 Sneaky Ways to Find Dirt Cheap Airfare

LinkedIn

I can be a savvy, well-dressed business traveler when my company pays for it. But with my current small-business budget, I d rather cram myself into a budget airliner s T-row (you know, the one in front of the bathrooms) in livestock class than spend $20 extra on emergency row seating.

Even if you have a high discomfort tolerance like me, some airlines still get away with charging more than you need to pay for a flight. Over the years, I ve discovered a few tricks that have helped me minimize transportation costs, to the point where friends have expressed jealousy. Here s what I ve learned.

Tip #1: Cut out the cab

What s the point of getting super-cheap airfare if you re going to spend an extra $50 on a cab ride? If you can schedule in a little extra time, public transportation can be your friend. If you re gone long enough, it might even beat airport parking rates.

I recently took a road trip to Hood River, Oregon from Colorado, where I live. After a week in Hood River, I wanted to visit a friend in Ashland, Oregon, while the friend I drove with returned with the car to Colorado. This meant I was in Hood River without a car. I wanted to get to Ashland, spend a few days there, then go back to Denver.

My first challenge was to get from Hood River to Portland, OR, which is about an hour away. I had to leave on a Saturday, barring me from the one weekly shuttle that does the trip. A Craigslist s rideshare post didn t pan out. Taxi fare cost upwards of $65.

So, for $23, I took that eminent bastion of American luxury, the Greyhound bus. Then, for a little over $2, I took Portland s light rail all the way to the airport.

It wasn t a bad deal. And, aside from the obligatory Greyhound scents and walking a couple of blocks from the station to the light rail, it probably only took about 30 minutes more than a cab would have.

Tip #2: Look Outside Airline Comparison Sites

Airline comparison sites don t include every airline out there. If you don t find a price you re comfortable with through a comparison site, try those unlisted airlines. Or you can try airline consolidators, which sell seats at near-wholesale prices. AirlineConsolidator.com is one such consolidator.

Next, I had to figure out how to get to Medford, OR. This would either take 6+ hours on the Hound or, for $13 more, less than an hour on an airplane. The flight would cost $70 each way. So, for $140, I could get back to Portland. What about flying back to Denver?

At the time I looked, a one-way flight from Portland to Denver cost $230. So my entire travel adventure would cost $370, way more than I wanted to spend.

I hovered over travel comparison sites for a week, waiting for the price to go down, but it never did. So I started visiting the websites of other airlines that weren t included in the travel sites I was using. These airlines included JetBlue, Southwest, and the dirt-cheap Allegiant Air, which doesn t seem to advertise at all.

Lo and behold, Southwest had the cheapest fare. But I still had one more thing to try.

Tip #3: Nearby airports can be your friend

Some airlines offer you cheaper prices for flying from small nearby airports. If you re near one such airport, it s worth looking into.

Oregon is a big state. I couldn t really believe that it only had one major airport. I started playing around with airline comparison site Sidestep.com. What if I flew directly from Ashland to Denver? Did airlines do that?

It turns out that southern Oregon does have another airport, near Ashland in the city of Medford. American Airlines flew out of Medford. And, oddly, it was $40 cheaper than flying from Portland to Denver on the cheapest airline, Southwest. I would actually save money by flying from a smaller, more convenient airport.

The trade-off, of course, was my time. I had to fly through LA, with a 3-hour layover. But as someone who works online, I didn t mind spending more time in transit, as long as I could get an Internet connection at the airport.

Tip #4: Booking early doesn t always give you the best deal

Sometimes you can get a cheaper flight by booking it later. It s worth checking out if you have flexibility.

If I d booked my flight three days before starting my trip, it would have cost $209, thanks to airlines weird price fluctuations. I ended up booking a flight for $160, four days before I had to take it. So much for booking two weeks ahead, or whatever that rule of thumb is.

Tip #5: Time Your Trip for Fare Sales

If you re a true cheap-flight junkie, you won t time your vacations around the time that everyone goes. Instead, you ll time them around fare sales.

I flew to Hawaii in April 2010 for around $700 round trip. At the beginning of August 2010, Alaska Air came up with a dirt-cheap fare sale to Hawaii. Round-trip fares between Portland and Honolulu, for example, added up about $318 with taxes. With a cheap round trip flight from Denver to Portland, I could get to Hawaii for about $450. That s much, much cheaper. Waiting for the off-season, or an airline promotion, pays.

If you want to stay afoot of such promotions, subscribe to an airline comparison website s automatic email updates. I use SideStep.com, which emails you when fares go below a fare that you set.

Honorable mention: Fly Mid-Week

In general, you can land a cheaper fare if you fly on an off-day, like Wednesday or Saturday morning, than if you fly when everyone else does.

10Best: Places to find a travel bargain in 2015 #travel #paris

10Best: Places to find a travel bargain in 2015

Like real estate, finding an affordable travel destination is all about location. “All things being equal, there are some countries where you’re going to get a lot more for your money,” says Tim Leffel . author of The World’s Cheapest Destinations. (Booklocker.com. $15.95). Quite often, bargains are fueled by political and economic events, and short-lived. Leffel shares some destinations likely to yield deals in 2015 with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.

Tanzania

Ebola fears have sent African tourism plummeting, although the affected areas are closer to Europe and Brazil than many parts of Africa. “Safaris are on sale. Some operators have seen business drop by 50% or 70% and they are willing to offer discounts,” Leffel says. “It’s silly to avoid the continent because of what’s happening in one corner.” tanzaniatouristboard.com

Argentina

Inflation and financial challenges once again make this South American country a bargain for travelers, who can easily access a gray-market exchange rate that’s official enough to be published in newspapers. “Across the country, if you pay in hard currency, you’ll get a much better deal,” Leffel says. 212-603-0443; turismo.gov.ar

Mexico

Leffel, who has lived in Mexico for a year and a half, knows firsthand the cost savings to be found south of the border. “It is perpetually a good deal, especially if you go to the interior. But right now the exchange rate is very, very good.” While beach resort areas are generally more costly, there may be bargains to be found in Los Cabos, which suffered hurricane damage in September. 800-446-3942; visitmexico.com

Ecuador

While the Galapagos Islands aren’t necessarily a bargain, the rest of this South American country has recently begun attracting more visitors, who are delighted to discover refurbished colonial churches and Amazon basin ecotours. “The roads are a lot better. The train lines are open again. There’s money pouring into infrastructure. It has always been a deal, but most people didn’t know that,” Leffel says. ecuador.travel

Portugal

This Mediterranean country, long a bargain destination, continues to offer value. “It has been compounded by the fiscal crisis, which has been hanging on longer in the south than parts of northern Europe,” Leffel says. “Prices really have not gone up for four or five years. Restaurant meals, a bottle of wine, hotel rooms are the same price they have been for ages.” visitportugal.com

Hungary

This central European gem has gotten a lot more attention in recent years as it has been discovered by Danube river cruise passengers, who consistently rate it as one of their favorite stops. And since the country doesn’t use the euro, savings are noticeable. “The word has gotten out that Budapest is one of the great cities in Europe for tourists. You can find fantastic hotel deals, especially outside of the summer. It’s one of the best deals in Europe,” Leffel says. gotohungary.com

Nepal

This Himalayan kingdom has long been considered one of the world’s cheapest countries for lovers of outdoor adventures like trekking, hiking and rafting. “It’s a perpetual bargain and it’s much easier to get your head around than India because it’s smaller,” Leffel says. “It’s not getting massively overdeveloped or overcrowded.” welcomenepal.com

Vietnam

The world’s top hotel values are probably found in Vietnam, Leffel says. “Whether you’re a backpacker or staying the best hotel in the city, you’re getting great value for your money.” The country has also been improving its roads and trains. Another plus: “They have some of the cheapest beer in the world.” vietnamtourism.com

Indonesia

While this Asian giant is on the rise with infrastructure improvements and an improving quality of life for residents, it remains a bargain. Even the island paradise of Bali can be affordable, if you stay away from international hotel chains. “The dollar’s really strong there now and there are lots of places to go. Although it’s hardly dirt cheap, prices north of the border have gotten more reasonable with the Canada’s currency recently dropping to a five-year-low against the U.S. dollar. “For a while people didn’t want to go to Montreal and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, because it was too expensive,” Leffel says. But now that the exchange rate is breaking in favor of Americans, “you won’t face sticker shock.” canada.travel

You need to pay your taxes quarterly if #how #to #find

You need to pay your taxes quarterly if.

For most of us, tax day comes just once a year — on or around April 15. But for people who owe estimated taxes, Uncle Sam expects a check four times a year. Unfortunately, you may be one of those beleaguered quarterly taxpayers if any of the following scenarios applies to you.

  • You cashed in some significant stock market winners but did not change the tax withholding from your salary.
  • You or your spouse are or became self-employed and owe both income and self-employment taxes for your efforts.
  • You employ a nanny and pay her federal payroll taxes. You can do this in quarterly payments or in one lump sum when you file your taxes in April. (But you may owe interest if you wait until April.)
  • You have income from other sources that you forgot to consider (or had no way of knowing about) when you filled out your W-4 for 2016.

Now that I’ve gotten thousands of you scared, let me tell you the good news: you need not worry about estimated taxes for the 2017 tax year if you are in one of the following two situations.

  • Anyone who expects his 2016 tax bill net of salary withholding to be under $1,000.
  • Any U.S. citizen or resident whose tax liability for 2015 was zero. You are exempt from any estimated tax payment requirement for 2016.

As for the rest of you, please keep reading. I’ve tried to be brief, but the rules are complex. So anyone wanting more information should download IRS Publication 505 from the IRS website.

Estimated tax payments for the 2017 tax year are due on April 18, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of 2018. All payments should be accompanied by Form 1040-ES, which you can also download from the IRS website. It takes just a few seconds to fill out (honest). If you underpay one or more installments, you get charged interest until the day you catch up. However, the government charges a very reasonable rate: only 4% at the time this was written, subject to change each quarter. Any payments outstanding after April 16 of next year are hit with a 0.5% a month “failure to pay” penalty (equivalent to an annual rate of 6%) plus the aforementioned interest charge.

So how much do I owe?

If you want to completely avoid any interest charges for the 2016 tax year, you must cough up enough via withholding and/or estimated payments to satisfy any one of four “safe-harbor” guidelines. Remember to include any withholding when calculating your payments.

  • The first safe harbor is only for folks with 2016 adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less. You will be safe for 2017 if you pay in at least the tax liability number shown on last year’s return (the amount on line 63 of your 206 Form 1040).
  • If your 2016 adjusted gross income was over $150,000 (the amount shown on line 37 of your 2016 Form 1040), you are covered for 2017 if you pay in at least 110% of last year’s tax liability via withholding and/or estimated payments.

Regardless of your income level last year, you are cool with the feds if you pay in at least 90% of whatever your 2017 tax bill turns out to be. Obviously, this requires some guesswork on your part. Hence the term “estimated taxes.”

Finally, if this year’s income starts off low and ends up high (say because you have huge fourth-quarter capital gains), you should probably use the “annualized method.” This is an exception to the general rule that your four estimated tax payments should be equal. Under the annualized method, estimated payments correspond to your cash flow, so you won’t owe big installments on the earlier due dates before you have the money to pay them. Unfortunately, the calculations are fairly difficult. (See the instructions to Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates and Trusts.)

You are free to use whichever of the above safe harbors does the best job of minimizing or deferring your estimated tax payments. However, if you don’t successfully pull into one of the safe harbors, you’ll be charged interest on the payment shortfalls. You can calculate the interest yourself when you file your 2017 return (using Form 2210 and entering the interest due on the appropriate line on page 2 of Form 1040) or let the IRS do the math and bill you.

Example: You figure you’ll owe the government $20,000 for this year (2017), but only $12,000 will be withheld from your salary. Obviously, you’ll be underpaid to the tune of $8,000. But there’s no need to make any estimated payments for this year if your 2016 tax liability was $12,000 or less (assuming 2016 adjusted gross income was $150,000 or less). The first safe harbor listed above gets you off the hook.

But if last year’s tax bill was $15,000, you’ll need to make $3,000 in estimated payments ($750 each) to reserve your safe-harbor berth (counting the estimated tax payments, you will have paid in a total of $15,000 for 2017, which gets you safe under the first safe harbor).

What if I miss a payment?

You won’t be the only one. You have several alternatives to avoid or at least minimize the interest-charge hit.

Say you will be getting a $2,000 refund from your 2016 return. After reading this, you are surprised to find out you owe $3,000 in estimated payments for 2017 ($750 for each quarter). Here’s the easy solution: When you file your 2016 return, tell the IRS you only want $500 back (by entering that amount on line 76a of your 2016 Form 1040). You can use the other $1,500 to cover your April and June estimated payments for this year (enter $1,500 on line 77 of your 2016 Form 1040). Then stay on track by making the last two payments for your 2017 tax year by the Sept. 15, 2017, and Jan. 15, 2018, deadlines.

You can also reduce or eliminate the interest-charge hit from missed estimated tax payments by increasing your salary withholding. Do this by filing a new Form W-4 with your employer. For example, say you owe a total of $3,000 in estimated payments. If you jack up your withholding between now and year’s end by that amount, your estimated tax payment obligation vaporizes.

Finally, you can stop the interest-charge bleeding simply by making oversize estimated payments to compensate for earlier underpayments. Say you missed the $750 payment due on April 18. If you pay in $1,500 on June 15, you’re all caught up. Of course, you’ll be charged two months’ interest on the $750 shortfall, but the interest is only a few bucks.

So you see, even if the estimated-tax rules apply to you, there are easy ways to lessen the pain.
