    Our Story:

    Owners Amy and Alex.

Amy’s passion for cooking started when she was an 11-year-old girl in Ethiopia. Her mother was a chef, catering large parties like weddings and embassy events. Amy would help her mother prep and cook, and there she learned the basics and lighted the flame of her love of cooking.

“Most kids get tired quick, but I did not,” Amy says. “I would stay up all night helping my mother cook. It was my hobby.”

Later Amy moved to Italy, where she and her mother worked for a big chef. She learned even more about cooking, about how restaurants work, and this experience fanned the flame. Amy and her husband Alex moved to the United States. They owned a gas station for years, and throughout their entrepreneurship Amy enjoyed cooking for friends and family.

“I cook every Sunday, gathering people. I cook for church. I like to share and give. I like to create a happy environment. I always make food that makes other people happy, and it makes me happy, too.”

Amy’s friends and family enjoyed her food so much that they told her she should open a restaurant. Amy said, “Hmm, let me think about that one.” And then, it was the right time. Her dream of opening a restaurant came true.

Before she opened the doors, Amy attended a culinary school. She wanted to be serious about her new business, and she wanted to learn how to properly execute it, making sure the kitchen and the food are up to the highest standards. Amy takes pride in the cleanliness of her restaurant, as she understands how the food we eats directly affects our wellbeing. She creates high quality dishes and works with fresh, healthy ingredients.

“I like very, very nice quality when I cook. I like to make food people enjoy. I cook with care and love. I take my time and do my best all the time.”

You can taste the love and care Amy puts into her dishes. Her desserts and coffees are a delicious homage to her time in Italy. The authentic Ethiopian dishes please American taste buds and draw in a community of Ethiopian folks who have found their way to Nashville. Come try Amy s in the warm, inviting space Amy and Alex have created. Perfect for families and friends to gather around a great meal and enjoy each other s company!

  • 100% PROFITS TO CHARITY

Paul Newman with campers from SeriousFun Children’s Network

The idea was in Paul Newman’s heart, and today, Newman’s Own, Inc. continues his commitment to pay 100% of net profits and royalties from the sale of our food and beverage products to Newman’s Own Foundation, a charitable organization supporting non-profits around the world.

OVER $495 MILLION HAS BEEN GIVEN TO
    THOUSANDS OF CHARITIES SINCE 1982.

In 1982, Paul Newman created Newman’s Own, a premium quality food and beverage company, based on 2 principles: “Quality will always trump the bottom line” and “100% of the profits will go to charity.” Paul felt he had been lucky in life and sharing one’s good fortune with others was “just the right thing to do.”

As the sole owner of Newman’s Own, Paul donated over $245 million of the net profits and royalties he received to thousands of charities. Today, the “100% of profits to charity” commitment is continued by Newman’s Own Foundation, which succeeded Paul as sole owner.

To learn more about Newman’s Own Foundation, its grantees and how “100% of profits to charity” works, visit: NEWMANSOWNFOUNDATION.ORG.

Below are just a few of the hundreds of organizations that have benefited from either Newman’s Own Foundation grants or Newman’s Own, Inc. support:

Specially-designed facilities and programs allow every child, no matter the medical condition, the opportunity to experience laughter, adventure, courage and friendship at camp – all free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors.

    Ethanol: Pros ?>

    #

    Pros

Positive Net Energy Balance – Corn-based ethanol has a positive net energy balance of 1.06btu per gallon for 1.00btu of energy used without ethanol by-product credits. With these credits, for things such as DDGS, corn-based ethanol has a positive net energy balance of 1.67btu per gallon for 1.00btu of energy used.

Biodegradable – As ethanol is made with organic materials it is highly biodegradable making spills far less worrysome than petroleum spills. When spilled, 74% of ethanol is broken down within 5 days.

Usable By-Products – The two chief by-products of corn-based ethanol are CO2 and DDGS, both of which are usable in other industries. The CO2 can be captured for use in the food and beverage industry. DDGS can be used for cattle feed or further crushed to extract corn oil, for food or biodiesel production uses.

Most Infrastructure In-place – There are few changes that would need to be made to widely adopt ethanol. Most automobiles available in the U.S. are Flex Fuel capable and there are roughly 2,000 stations already serving E85. While most of these stations are lumped in the Midwest, they are increasing nationwide.

    Cons

Food vs. Fuel – 2.4 to 2.8 gallons of ethanol can be produced per bushel of corn. As a result, there has been massive media coverage over the use of food as fuel. While there are mountains of findings showing how the use of corn has increased food costs and equal amounts showing it does not, in the end food crops are being used as fuel, making corn-based ethanol inferior to cellulosic ethanol in this regard.

Reduced MPG – Based on 2009 flex fuel vehicles, E85 miles per gallon is expected to be roughly 28.5% lower in the city and 26.5% lower on the highway. This means it takes 1.35 to 1.40 gallons of E85 to equal the mileage of 1.00 gallons of gasoline.

Fuel Transportation – Ethanol absorbs water and is corrosive. which make it difficult to ship through existing pipelines from the Midwest of the U.S. where most production occurs. Remedies include shipping or building dedicated ethanol pipelines, however the most likely scenario seems to involve rail or road transport. The best scenario would be local ethanol plants, with the easiest way to accomplish this through continued development of cellulosic ethanol, where feedstocks are abundant everywhere as opposed to corn or sugar.

Water Absorbtion – Ethanol absorbs water, which can contaminate it as a fuel and makes it more difficult to ship through pipelines. As a result, ethanol has a shorter shelf and tank life than gasoline.

Fueling Locations – There are roughly 2,000 E85 fueling stations in the U.S. with the majority in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. A U.S. E85 fueling station map and locator can be found here.

Some people welcome visitors as Ask Me Greeters in the main lobby while other volunteers help assemble patient education folders. People who volunteer can work flexible hours – as few as two hours per week, once a month, etc.

MVH recognizes that everyone has special talents and the concierge who manages the Ask Me! Greeter program matches each person’s talent or strength with where they can make the greatest difference in the hospital.

    The Orthopedic Institute
The Orthopedic Institute at Monongahela Valley Hospital is changing the way that patients and their families experience joint replacement. This proven program is centered around the fundamental principle of wellness and volunteers play an active role in the patient experience. Volunteers work beside the medical and professional staff as they provide care to patients. They support patients – serving-one-on-one – sometimes even as an extended family ‘coach’ during therapy and group activities when needed. The Orthopedic Institute volunteers also assist with the pre-op classes, group therapy sessions, group and reunion lunches, preparing and cleaning equipment for physical therapy, preparing patient information packets and visiting with and encouraging patients.

    Travel Food Ideas #free #travel

    Travel Food Ideas

Traveling means lots of snacks if you want to have a peaceful trip. Here are some ideas for snacks and lunches that pack well for traveling.

Don t forget to pack napkins (a roll of paper towels is even better), plastic utensils, and paper plates or bowls. Anti-bacterial wipes are another good idea for before and after eating. Don t forget grocery bags to use for trash. A beach towel or folded sheet will protect the car seats from stains. If you plan on stopping to picnic, bring a disposable tablecloth for the picnic tables which are often less than sanitary.

Most of the non-refrigerated items can be bought in bulk and put into snack sized zipper bags before leaving. Keep the individual baggies in a larger plastic box with a lid to minimize crushing. A small cooler will contain the other items, and frozen water bottles will serve double duty as ice packs and water as they melt.

    1. Individual containers of yogurt
    2. String cheese
    3. Lunch meat
    4. Fresh fruit
    5. Prewashed bags of carrots, sugar snap peas, and broccoli
    6. Crackers
    7. Cookies
    8. Water bottles with pop-up tops
    9. Bagels
    10. Fresh fruit (keep bananas in a shoe box so they won t get squished)
    11. Thermos of hot water for hot chocolate or tea
    12. Trail mix
    13. Granola
    14. Bean dip and corn chips
    15. Dried fruit
    16. Pretzels
    17. Chex mix
    18. Cheese and crackers with pepperoni
    19. Jerky

Items to avoid: anything with lots of sugar or artificial ingredients like food coloring. Although many kids have no reaction to these ingredients, it will make some children so restless that you will wish you were anywhere but stuck in a car with them for several hours. Throw out trash every time you stop and your car will stay neater and you will be in a better mood.

If you are on a multi-day trip and will be staying in a motel, by all means choose one with a pool! The extra exercise will tire them out and help them to go to sleep easily instead of exhibiting the usual hyperactivity that comes with sleeping in a strange place.

6 top Thailand travel and food blogs

Unlike Twitter and Facebook, which have become the top sites to announce that you just ate a big sandwich, the art and passion of blogging has never been more serious.

Thailand is blessed with an in-depth blogging scene covering all manner of topics relating to travel, from culture and food to partying. And, of course, the more risqué stuff we can’t cover here.

Here’s a selection of the top travel-themed blogs — in no particular order — with regular updates that give the inside track on Thailand.

    1. Thai Travel News

One of Thailand’s “No See Evil” Buddhas, featured on a recent post by Richard Barrow. URL: Thaitravelblogs.com

This is the grand-daddy of Thailand travel blogs. Run by serial blogger Richard Barrow, as the name suggests it’s a collection of experiences taken from his travels as well as news and updates relating to tourism in Thailand.

Ranging from enviable Tourism Authority press junkets to visits to tourist hot spots and lesser known locations — or just advance news of an interesting event — this site has something for everyone, be they tourist, traveller, expat or local.

Highlight:  This list of tourist attractions affected by the ongoing floods is a valuable resource for tourists as the country battles rising water levels.

    2. Bangkok Burger Blog

The Bangkok Burger Blog’s motto: Leave no bun unturned. URL: Bangkokburgerblog.wordpress.com

A burger blog? In Bangkok? Stay with me for a moment.

Yes, Thai food is wonderful. But sometimes you just need to knock back a big old greasy burger.

Thanks to the Bangkok Burger blogger’s hard graft tasting and ratings, you can forget calling Ronald McDonald (who craftily delivers to your door in Thailand) and instead grab a quality burger and fries.

Best of all, there are also regular free giveaways.

Highlight:  The coverage of Bangkok Burger Blog’s recent testing session at Bangkok Burger Company is almost not suitable for work.

    3. Still Life In Moving Vehicles

Dale Konstanz has been photographing Bangkok taxi interiors for more than four years. URL: Lifeinmovingvehicle.blogspot.com

Dale Konstanz’s “Still Life In Moving Vehicles” blog is made up of images taken inside Bangkok taxis over the last four years.

What is particularly noticeable are the cultural nuances that play out over the pictures and stories posted on the blog.

Be it the importance of amulets, obsession with pigs, bare-footedness of drivers or the emergence of GPS devices, the blog is a window into some of the lesser-known aspects of Thai culture.

    4. Austin Bush Food Blog

Warning: a visit to Austin Bush’s Food Blog usually leads to immediate hunger pangs. URL: Austinbushphotography.com/category/foodblog

CNNGo contributor Austin Bush makes the cut for his delightful food blog. Hunger-inducing photos of local food are paired within details of authentic Thai recipes and descriptions of some of Thai cuisine’s most obscure and delicious concoctions.

Austin primarily covers Thailand but there’s the occasional exception when travel takes him elsewhere.

Highlight: Austin’s Thai Eats Google map makes it easier than ever to visit and sample his favorite Bangkok-based eateries.

    5. Eating Thai Food

Day by day, the founders of Eatingthaifood.com are eating their way through the sois of Bangkok. URL: Eatingthaifood.com

Another quality food blog but with a twist. Eating Thai Food is dedicated to showcasing the tastiest dishes to be found in Thailand’s street restaurants.

Written with passion and illuminated by melt-in-your-mouth photography, site writers Mark Wiens and Dwight Turner take their food very seriously.

Whether your interest is exploring traditional favorites, trying out new ideas or just tasting Thai street food for the first time, this blog will be your shining light.

Highlight:  Have you ever heard of the peculiar egg yolk fruit (luk taw)?

    6. Jamie’s Phuket

For all things Phuket, visit Jamie’s Phuket Blog. URL: Jamie-monk.blogspot.com

Jamie’s Phuket blog has been one of the most informative websites covering Phuket and the surrounding area since coming online in 2006.

That Jamie juggles the demands of the blog with a full-time job as a dive centre manager, makes the site –- which showcases “the real side of Phuket” –- all the more impressive.

His pages cover a range of activities and events from festivals, cultural events and things to do with kids, to hotels, beaches and of course diving.

Highlight: Jamie’s three-part series on the 2010 Phuket Vegetarian festival gives a fantastic insight into this traditional event.

Other great Thailand resources for travelers

Jam-packed  Southeast Asia online travel guide Travelfish.org now has a section featuring daily blog updates from around the region, including Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

The Travelfish forum is equally useful, helping to answer questions and queries. There’s also lots of practical information to be found deep within, including this advice for avoiding scams .

    Thonglor-Ekamai

The Thonglor-Ekamai website and map is the only resource out there devoted solely to Bangkok’s hippest neighborhood.

Covering everything in and around the conjoined Thonglor and Ekamai Roads, this hyper-local site has restaurant reviews, notable interviews, shopping highlights and nightlife features.

For daily updates on sales, happy hours and restaurant specials, click “like” on the Thonglor-Ekamai Facebook page.

Another site focused on Bangkok restaurant and bar reviews, attractions, events and shopping information.

The best thing about Kohspot.com is that its writer pulls no punches when it comes to his brutally honest reviews.

    I Am Koh Chang

Dedicated to the popular tourist island, travel website I Am Koh Chang covers beaches, accommodation, transportation and local news.

The site is run by the folks in charge of the Baan Rim Nam Guesthouse, but they do include information, location and contact details for a vast number of guesthouses and hotels in the region.

Do you have a favorite blog that supplies you with a regular intake of Thai life that isn’t on this list? Let us know about it in the comments section.
