World’s cheapest cities for hotel stays revealed

TRAVELLING is certainly not cheap. Besides forking out for flights, once you get to your destination you have to pay for hotels, rental cars, dining, tourist attractions and more.

To give you a hand, we ve put together a list of inspiring, dynamic cities with hotels that won t bust your budget. The prices are based on lodgings with a three-star rating on Kayak.com for a sample week of travel (January 4-11). These hotels may not be centrally located or be full of amenities, but provide a clean bed and a decent base camp for a week of travel.

If Ho Chi Minh City isn t lively enough, check out Mumbai. The economy is booming thanks to the Bombay Stock Exchange, but prices outside of designer shops remain low. Be sure to try the legendary (and cheap) street food: head to Chowpatty Beach for bhelpuri (a mix of puffed rice and other ingredients), or Mohammed Ali Road for kebabs.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Hotel Price: $A15

Hotel Example: Hotel Palota

Budapest has a captivating history that s reflected in its gorgeous mix of baroque, neoclassical and Art Nouveau architecture. What s more, it features a host of affordable activities. Try a visit to one of the legendary thermal spas, such as the Sz chenyi Bath (about $A28/day), or a sightseeing cruise on the Danube (from $A14).

While Thessaloniki might not have as many historical sites as Athens, if you want to do as the Greeks do, it s the place to be. This seaside port faces the Aegean and features stunning views, Byzantine culture and a walkable downtown. And since Greece s financial troubles are no secret, holiday prices are much lower lately.

Best tour companies for solo travel – Business Insider #ctc #travel

#solo travel

Solo travel is on the rise.

And for good reason — it allows you much more freedom and a greater opportunity to connect with locals.

According to the 2015 Visa Global Travel Intentions study. which surveyed over 13,000 travelers from 25 different countries, 24% of travelers traveled alone on their most recent leisure trip. That’s almost 10% more than in 2013.

But for some, venturing out into the world completely solo can be intimidating.

The good news is there are a number of travel companies that cater to solo travelers and can help you book a guided trip with other travelers who are on their own.

Take a look at our list below and start planning your next trip.

General trips

Solos. Britain’s number one “singles holiday company,” has been around since 1982, and they’ve been catering specifically to solo travelers from the start. The company offers all kinds of vacations — from walks and treks to cities, ski or beach vacations. They also just recently launched an American branch, Solos Vacations. which only offers trips to the UK and Italy as of right now.

Classic Journeys

Shutterstock / Almanino Classic Journeys offers walking tours in cities such as Quebec.

Classic Journeys provides a solution to an issue that solo travelers have long had to deal with: supplements. Most travel companies raise prices up to 50% for those traveling alone. Classic Journeys, on the other hand, keeps its mark up to around 15%, because they only charge customers the extra fee that hotels charge for single travelers.

This isn’t a “singles vacation” company; Classic Journeys specializes in walking tours with knowledgeable local guides. They’re happy to book you a double room just for yourself, and they’ve received top ratings from both National Geographic and Travel + Leisure. About a third of their guests book solo trips.

Contiki Vacations

Contiki is geared towards younger travelers, specifically those aged 18-35. The company uses forums and social media to connect vacationers with each other before they embark on their journey. Since most of their pricing is for doubles, Contiki’s goal is to match travelers up with someone of the same sex and then book a double room for them. So if you’re looking to make friends on your trip, this is the company for you.

Abercrombie and Kent

Best known as a luxury travel company, Abercrombie and Kent  accepts solo travelers on all of its trips — to all seven continents. They also offer Solo Savings escorted group tours, where single travelers enjoy their own private accommodations during every stop of the trip, but don’t have to pay the usual single supplements. A K either completely waives the supplement, or reduces it by up to 75%.

Adventure trips

Shutterstock / Longjourneys Adventure tour companies allow solo travelers to exotic destinations such as the Galapagos.

Exodus  is unique in that it designates one or two departure dates per tour as Solo Departures, which the company suggests solo travelers use. Therefore, most of the people who leave on those dates and end up on those trips are people vacationing alone.

Exodus’ tour guides are local and have gone through leader training. Guests can choose trips like cycling Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast or exploring Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands in South America.

Overseas Adventure Travel

Ideal for budget travelers, Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) takes single travelers to exotic destinations such as Botswana and Patagonia. They have both land adventures, which are tours on land with groups of 10-16 other travelers, or small ship adventures, which are boat tours with anywhere from 16 to 25 other travelers.

OAT does not charge supplements, even if you extend your trip 4-9 nights, and they offer the “Solo Traveler Challenge:” a guarantee that if you find another travel company offering a better price on a comparable trip, OAT will meet that price, plus lower it by $500.

If you’re looking for an authentic experience, G Adventures is your answer. You can sleep in tents in a desert camp in Morocco or sleep under the stars in Antarctica. Active travelers will also like G Adventures; they have multiple trekking and hiking tours, such as a 10-day journey up Mont Blanc in Switzerland.

There are no single supplements, but G Adventures does book shared hotel rooms, so your accommodations won’t be private. However, if you choose to extend your trip by using the company’s independent extensions option, you will be charged a singles supplement.

Safaris

Shutterstock / Andrzej Kubik Going on a safari during the offseason can significantly reduce the cost of your trip.

Singita  has luxury safari lodges in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. One is located in the well known Kruger National Park, and the others are in lesser known parks. They’ve completely abandoned the single supplement, and they offer reduced pricing if you’re looking to travel in the off season.

Wilderness Safaris

Billed as Africa’s “foremost ecotourism operator,” Wilderness Safaris  takes guests to some of the continent’s most remote locations while also helping to maintain its biodiversity. The company’s 50 luxury camps are located in eight African countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

If you travel through southern Africa during November to April 15th, Wilderness Safaris will waive not only your flight but also your accommodation charges. It’s a great deal, considering you still have a good chance of seeing just as much wildlife — but for a fraction of the price.

Cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line

On three of its ships — the Epic, Breakaway, and Pride of America — Norwegian Cruise Line has cabins made exclusively for solo travelers that cost about 30% less than a double stateroom. They offers cruises all over including Alaska, Florida and the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada and New England, Hawaii, Mexico, Europe, and Panama just to name a few.

 Lindblad Expeditions

Shutterstock / PhotoRoman Cruise through exotic places like Vietnam and enjoy a cabin all to yourself.

Like Norwegian, Lindblad Expeditions is another cruise company that offers solo cabins for a third less than the price of regular rooms. These single rooms can be found on their National Geographic Explorer, Endeavour, and Orion ships. Their destinations include the Amazon, Peru, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Caribbean.

Grand Circle Cruise Line

Grand Circle Cruise Line is one of the few cruise companies that does not offer a single supplement on their small ship cruises. Its small ship cruises go to the British Isles, Greece, France, Turkey, Bosnia, Spain, Burma, Iberia, and many others.

Best Budget Destinations for 2014

Conditions are perfect for visiting these near- and far-flung, culture-rich locales: Price-wise, 2014 is their year. Dipping hotel rates, new attractions, and some perennially affordable sights and eats make these five cities ideal to consider for your travel itinerary this year.

SOUTH AFRICA The country that Nelson Mandela changed forever will change you, too

Why in 2014: Take your pick of locales to visit in South Africa this year: Hotel rates are down 8 percent across the country. Put wildlife at the top of your agenda, whether you’re looking to see the big five on a safari or just want to hang out with the free-roaming penguins on Boulders Beach in Cape Town (careful, they bite). For a less risk-fraught animal excursion, Kruger National Park is one of the best on the continent. For an entrance fee of about $20, you can take in the South African landscape and keep your eyes peeled for both the big five and the little five (buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion, and rhino beetle). Beach lovers will flip for Cape Town’s beaches, at the intersection of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Go Atlantic (the western side) for sunbathing and watercolor sunsets; hit the Indian (the eastern side) for swimming and surfing. Many of the eastern beaches have lifeguards. Soweto township in Johannesburg offers numerous opportunities to absorb the city’s prominent history, such as the Nelson Mandela Museum and the Apartheid Museum. When you’re hungry, visit the restaurants on Vilikazi Street; the indigenous local food menus include tripe, morogo (boiled wild spinach), and ting ting (sour porridge).

Where to Stay: In Cape Town, the Parliament Hotel’s helpful staff, free breakfast, and safe location next to a police station are key basic reasons to book your stay. Nearby, you’ll find Company’s Gardens, where you can marvel at an aviary and scope out the oldest pear tree in Africa, and the Slave Lodge Museum, which educates visitors about South Africa’s history of oppression. (parliamenthotel.co.za. from $67)

VENICE Yes, Venice! Hit the enchanting city of canals while hotel rates are down

Why in 2014: Put “floating down picturesque Venetian canals in a gondola” on your 2014 itinerary. Spending time in Venice is now more affordable than ever — hotel rates are down 7 percent from last year. Along with the iconic gondola trip, visiting the Piazza San Marco is a must: The Sansovino Library and the Ducal Palace stand at either side. You can’t miss the two large granite columns from the 13th century that are topped with two symbols: the Lion of Saint Mark and a statue of Saint Theodore. Soak in the work of Venetian masters such as Vittore Carpaccio, Tiziano Vecelli, and Giorgione at Gallerie dell’Accademia, then follow it up with a dose of modern art at the Peggy Guggenheim museum, which showcases works from her personal collection by big names including Picasso, Dali, and Pollock. Ask your hotel’s concierge about water transportation to Murano, where you can see traditional glass blowing on a small tour. Be aware that there’s a hard sell at the end of the tour. They really want you to buy fancy glass.

Where to Stay: For opulent Venetian atmosphere, consider Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo. Nice touches like Murano glass chandeliers and exposed beams add to the 1700s feel. (alpontemocenigo.com. from $115)

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Affordable all-inclusive resorts put this island paradise within reach

Why in 2014: Growing more popular by the day, the DR is a go-to 2014 beach destination if you’ve been priced out of vacation spots like Cabo or aren’t up for sharing sand with the fashion crowd in Tulum. The five-star all-inclusive Majestic Colonial Beach Resort in Punta Cana is surprisingly affordable, at about $212 per night for two people. For a more rustic trip, up-and-coming Las Terrenas, a little-known former fishing village in the Samaná province, is easy on the purse strings and heavy on pristine beaches. To get your nature fix, pay a visit to Los Haitises National Park, a protected virgin forest informally known as Caño Hondo. Rent a kayak for $3 (plus a licensed guide) and glide through lagoons and mangrove canals to spy on wildlife like brown pelicans and endangered leatherback turtles.

Where to Stay: The private and affordable Eva Luna, in Las Terrenas, has five Mexican-style villas, each with a kitchen. (villa-evaluna.com. from $100)

BUENOS AIRES The “Paris of South America” invites you to tango, shop, eat — and then tango some more

Why in 2014: Dubbed the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires has a cosmopolitan feel and is heavy on museums, historical sites, and nightlife. Go this year: Hotel rates are 8 percent lower than they were in 2013. In the evening, make a stop at busy Corrientes Avenue for everything from a slice at an all-night pizzeria to rare books to dance clubs where you can brush up on your tango skills — the street is rich in tango history. If it’s been a while since you’ve watched Evita, re-educate yourself on the life of Eva Perón at the Evita Museum, which spotlights Eva’s clothing, items from her charity work, and videos of her speeches. Afterward, view Argentinean culture through the eyes of its artists at the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, where works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and more reside. Follow Santa Fe Avenue to arrive at the affluent Recoleta neighborhood, famous for its high-end shopping, but also noteworthy for Recoleta Cemetery, a mecca of 18th and 19th century design and the final resting place of well-to-do Argentineans and famous statesmen, politicians, and military heroes — including Eva Perón’s tomb. More than 100 years old, Teatro Colon, in downtown Buenos Aires, houses opera and ballet performances, and concerts by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra among other classical concerts by musicians from around the world. Tickets are reasonable (about $9), or take a guided tour of the theater (about $10). To seize the moment after you’ve celebrated the past, the Río de la Plata is ideal for sailing, motorboating, and waterskiing.

Where to Stay: Situated in a residential area outside the city center but two blocks from the subway, the Hotel Boutique Racó de Buenos Aires is a boutique hotel that’s high on style and comfort — there’s even an outdoor courtyard where you can enjoy breakfast. (racodebuenosaires.com.ar. from $66)

ORLANDO The “big three” — Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld — are just the beginning

Why in 2014: If you’ve been planning to hit Orlando and its theme parks eventually but haven’t booked your tickets yet, do it in 2014: Hotel rates are down 7 percent. To sweeten the deal, the “big three” theme parks all have brand-new elements, including Universal Studios’ Transformers: The Ride 3D; the ever-expanding Fantasyland at Disney World, including the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, scheduled to open in 2014; and Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, SeaWorld’s biggest attraction to date, which drops temps to 30 degrees — colder than it ever gets in Florida. If eating well appeals to you after your foray into action-adventure, hit up downtown Orlando: The recently opened Rusty Spoon restaurant sources local fare from Florida farmers, like butter-poached wild clams and slow-braised Jamison farm lamb collar.

Where to Stay: Rosen Inn International is the newest addition to Rosen’s roster of family-friendly, value-conscious Orlando hotels. Parents, take note: Free shuttle rides to SeaWorld, Universal Studios, and Wet ‘n’ Wild are provided, and children under 9 eat free in the hotel’s buffet restaurant. (roseninn7600.com. from $61)

Flight upgrades: 20 tips for free or cheap business class #airfares

#where to get cheap airline tickets
#

Get free or business on the cheap

They’re the Holy Grail for regular travellers but while rare, flight upgrades do exist.

The chances of getting one can be slim, but here are our top 20 tips for boosting your chances of bagging a better seat. Of course, the bulk of these tips won’t be relevant on a budget airline where there is only one class.

Join frequent flyer schemes before you fly

The best way to get regular upgrades is to join a frequent flyer scheme and diligently build up points/miles.

Getting to top levels like ‘Gold’ or ‘Premier’ (varies by airline) gives you huge status at check-in, putting you at the front of the line for any spare expensive seats, and sometimes even equals an upgrade every time one’s available. Of course, to get there, you need to fly regularly and airlines can make it tricky to accrue points on discounted flights.

If you don’t take to the skies that often, it’s still a good idea to join as most are free and you’re more likely to get an upgrade than if you’ve no relationship with the airline at all.

Even if you have no intention of sticking with the airline you’re flying with, it could still be worth joining its scheme to leapfrog people who haven’t, and nothing stops you signing up for a few different ones.

If you have no luck with a free upgrade, loyalty schemes also allow you to use any points to buy an upgrade for some tickets.

It’s not what you know but who you know

If you’ve got close friends at the check-in desk, or better still, higher up in the airline, they may be able to wangle you occasional special privileges. Some airlines also give their staff upgrade vouchers, which’ll effectively buy you an upgrade if there’s a higher-class seat available.

Don’t waste your time or miles on short-haul upgrades. long-haul is where it’s at

There’s not much point going to the end of the Earth to wangle a free upgrade on a short-haul flight, and certainly little sense in using your flyer points or cash to pay for one. Often, all you get is a slightly bigger seat and a fancier sandwich at best.

Instead, medium and long-haul flights offer the best value upgrades and you’ll have time to enjoy them. You only tend to get the flat beds and all the bells and whistles on a longer journey.

What do I get if I upgrade?

Here we explain the different cabin classes and what you typically get. But before getting into the nitty-gritty, this is about non-budget airline cabins, given the budget carriers only have one class. The four main classes are.

Economy class. Small seat, basic food, basic service.

With limited legroom on most long-haul carriers, ‘cattle class’ offers the most basic service, and is primarily the domain of leisure travellers.

What’s included can vary widely, though. Nifty website SeatGuru shows whether an airline includes in-seat video and games, and if there is a power socket and wi-fi.

Not on every airline, premium economy offers a similar overall service to regular economy, but around six extra inches of legroom with seats that fold back further, making sleeping much easier – especially if you’re tall.

Business class. Big and possibly fold-flat seat, luxury food & service, lounge access

Flying business on European short-haul flights isn’t so exciting; many book it to get access to the lounge (see cheap lounge access instead). Going long-haul business class is a different story, with all sorts of benefits.

This highly profitable class is made to impress, so travellers get faster check-in, top quality menus, and many long-haul business class seats can be rendered totally flat for sleeping. You can find quasi-classes, such as Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class, which many say is a cross between business and first.

First class. High-end luxury, exceptional cost, lounge access

True first class only exists on premium commercial routes, so beware as a few airlines call their business class “first”. It means the crиme de la crиme of comfort, both on the plane and at the airport. Often the seat can be replaced by a full bed with bedding. Massages may also be available, as well as the highest quality of personal concierge service.

Of course, this level of luxury comes at an eye-watering price. For a transatlantic return, 6,000 isn’t surprising.

Free upgrades do happen – nearly one in five have got one in the last two years

They might be less frequent than they used to be, but free upgrades do still exist. In July 2014 we polled our users who’d flown in the last two years and found 16% had been upgraded for free, though of those on a non-budget airline, the figure is 18%.

Four Places to Look for Holiday Deals on Airfare

Impacting Travel

Airlines are a strange breed when it comes to Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday deals. They want in on the offers, of course, but they have been stingy in not announcing what their sales are ahead of time.

Maybe that s just part of the allure, but we figured it would be helpful to drop a few tips on you in case you want to give your loved one(s) a trip for the holidays.

Note that of the two days, Cyber Monday is often the better deal for airlines. According to a story in the Miami Herald, Last year Cyber Monday triggered a fourfold increase in worldwide flight bookings, according to research by Sojern, a data-marketing company that expects November bookings to skyrocket again this year.

1) CHECK THE WEBSITES Airlines love to put their deals up on their own websites, so this is a logical first step. Alaska Airlines website is advertising a deal right now with flights starting at $59. Starting Sunday, Nov. 29, and continuing into Cyber Monday, Fiji Airways is offering up to 40 percent off round-trip flights to Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. Here are the websites for most of the major airlines:

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

Health recommendation: Yellow fever is a risk in certain parts of Ecuador, so CDC recommends the yellow fever vaccine for travelers 9 months of age or older to these areas.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

When traveling in Nepal, you should avoid mosquito bites to prevent malaria. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans, such as where you are going, when you are traveling, and if you are spending a lot of time outdoors or sleeping outside. Talk to your doctor about how you can prevent malaria while traveling. For more information on malaria in Nepal, see malaria in Nepal.

Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Nepal, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups:

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites.
    • People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers).
    • People who are taking long trips or moving to Nepal
    • Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Nepal. The government of Nepal requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission .

    • If you were vaccinated against polio as a child but have never had a n polio booster dose as an adult, you should get this booster dose. Adults need only one polio booster in their lives.
    • If you were not completely vaccinated as a child or do not know your vaccination status, talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated.

    The Mantra of Transformation

    The Mother on Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo came upon earth to teach this truth to men. He told them that man is only a transitional being living in a mental consciousness, but with the possibility of acquiring a new consciousness, the Truth-consciousness, and capable of living a life perfectly harmonious, good and beautiful, happy and fully conscious. During the whole of his life upon earth, Sri Aurobindo gave all his time to establish in himself this consciousness he called supramental, and to help those gathered around him to realise it.

    ***

Sri Aurobindo Commenting on the character of the Ashram

Sri Aurobindo wrote: ‘This Ashram has been created with another object than that ordinarily common to such institutions, not for the renunciation of the world but as a centre and field of practice for the evolution of another kind and form of life which would in the final end be moved by a higher spiritual consciousness and embody a greater life of the spirit.

in a letter Sri Aurobindo wrote: ‘It is necessary or rather inevitable that in an Ashram which is a “laboratory”. for a spiritual and supramental yoga, humanity should be variously represented. For the problem of transformation has to deal with all sorts of elements favourable and unfavourable. The same man indeed carries in him a mixture of these two things. If only sattwic and cultured men come for yoga, men without very much of the vital difficulty in them, then, because the difficulty of the vital element in terrestrial nature has not been faced and overcome, it might well be that the endeavour would fail. Those in the Ashram come from all quarters and are of all kinds; it cannot be otherwise.

    ******

Sri Aurobindo is constantly in the subtle physical, very active there. I see him almost daily, and last night I spent many hours with him.

If you become conscious in the subtle physical you will surely meet him.

Psychically. it is a birth which will recur eternally, from age to age, in the history of the universe. This birth is a manifestation which takes place periodically, from age to age, in the history of the Earth.

And finally, from the purely spiritual point of view, it will be said that it is the birth of the Eternal on Earth. For each time the Avatar takes a physical form it is the birth of the Eternal himself on Earth.

How Much We Spent Traveling in Europe for Two Months #william

How Much We Spent Traveling in Europe for Two Months

When Andy and I set off on our Beyond Vacation kick-off trip. I decided to keep track of every penny we spent. There were two reasons for this. We ve never really tracked our travel spending, and I wanted to know how much it costs for us to travel for more than a week or two. And I wanted to be able to share with you how much it costs to travel to the places we visited in Europe. I will have posts later that break down our spending by location, but for now here s an overview of how much we spent traveling in Europe for two months.

A quick look at how much we spent

The following amounts are for two people. All numbers are listed first in euros, second in US dollars.

    2,959.40€ / $3,924.47 accommodation

    1,335.60€ / $1,771.31 trains

    295.60€ / $391.81 other transportation

    2,056.78€ / $2,726.21 food and alcohol

    205.80€ / $272.80 activities

    130.04€ / $172.40 miscellaneous

    6,983.22€ / $9,259 total

As you can see, Western Europe is not cheap. We traveled through Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Italy, plus side trips to the tiny countries of San Marino and the Vatican. Andy and I are not bare-bones budget travelers, but we aren t luxury travelers either, so this should give you a decent middle of the road view on costs.

    Accommodation spending 2,959.40€

We spent 52 nights away from our home. Most of this was in apartment rentals, but there were a few nights in hostels and hotels, plus one night spent on an overnight train. 2,959.40€ divided by 52 nights comes out to an average of 56.91€ per night.

We didn t pay for 15 nights of lodging. The night on the train was technically free accommodation since the ticket price is entirely included in the train category. We also got complimentary accommodations in the following places: 2 nights in Rotterdam for the post-conference press trip; 2 nights in a hostel in Nice and 3 nights in a hostel in Naples. both sponsored by Hostelworld; 7 nights in Bologna as part of BlogVille, sponsored by Emilia-Romagna Tourism. If we had paid for those ourselves, I estimate we would ve spent another 1,100€ for 14 nights.

So 2,959.40€ divided by the 37 nights we did pay for averages out to 79.98€ per night, roughly 40€ per person per night. I think this is pretty good considering how expensive hotels can be in Europe. Renting apartments as often as possible definitely helped keep our costs down, not only in this category but also in the food category.

    Train spending 1,335.60€

This was a plane-free trip, so our major form of transportation was by train. The train system in Europe is generally really good, and I m starting to like train travel more and more.

We looked at getting InterRail passes (like Eurail passes, but InterRail is for European residents) but after some research decided it wasn t worth it in our situation. Since we had all of our dates set ahead of time, it was cheaper to book the train tickets ahead of time in most places. Passes would ve worked if we were booking at the last minute. There were a few trains we bought tickets for at the last minute (in the Netherlands and Belgium, and short distances in Italy) because the prices were almost the same and we wanted to leave ourselves some flexibility.

    Other transportation spending 295.60€

This is almost entirely public transportation, such as buses, metros, and trams. We used public transportation a lot since we were mostly in big cities and the distances were too far to walk. Almost each city we were in offers some kind of day or multi-day pass for their transportation system, but not all of them were as economical. There is one ride in a taxi and a round trip boat ticket in here as well.

Rotterdam Tourism covered the cost of our local transportation for the 2 day press trip including this crazy tuk tuk and a water taxi. Emilia-Romagna Tourism covered the cost of the van that took our whole group on a weekend excursion, but we paid for our transportation for things like getting to Gelato University and to Modena for the vinegar tasting .

    Food and alcohol spending 2,056.78€

We did our fair share of eating (and drinking) out, but we purposely rented apartments so we could eat breakfast in and make our own meals occasionally. We almost never bought breakfast out, we went grocery shopping when we stayed in apartments, and didn t eat at fancy restaurants. We certainly could ve eaten in even more often, but we also wanted to make sure we were trying the local food.

We had a few lunches covered at the travel blogging conference, all meals on the post-conference trip were covered, and a few meals were covered during BlogVille. Overall we paid for almost everything we ate or drank, and I m estimating about 3 days worth of meals we didn t have to pay for.

2,056.78€ divided by 50 days averages out to 41.14€ per day, so just over 20€ per person per day. Not bad considering how often we ate out, drank out, and indulged in gelato. (Check out Andy s post about the best sandwich ever .)

    Activities spending 205.80€

This number includes visits to Vianden Castle and Castle Gravensteen. the Anne Frank Museum. the tulip farm. the Cantillon brewery. Mini Europe. renting beach umbrellas, and a few other things like that. It is a bit low though because we had quite a few activities covered by the tourism boards we were working with. The things we did in Bologna while we were participating in BlogVille were covered, like our San Marino guide, my pasta cooking class and Gelato University. We also had complimentary tours of Pompeii. the Vatican. the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and a food tour from Walks of Italy. These are all activities we would have paid for on our own if we weren t able to get them sponsored, and I estimate the cost to be around 700€.

    Miscellaneous spending 130.04€

The majority of this category won t apply to most people, but there will always be some other expenses along the way when you travel, especially if you buy souvenirs. I only had one pair of jeans with me, and they were an older pair, so just a week into the trip they had holes in them and had to be replaced for 39.90€ in Amsterdam. I also bought some earrings the same day.

Because we were traveling for 2 months, I had to buy contact solution about halfway through the trip. We put our luggage in a locker at the train station in Paris during our train layover so we could find dinner. I bought some postcards, as well as 3 souvenir thimbles for my mom. We also had to spend a whopping 20 cents each to use a bathroom, which I only bothered to include here because I thought it was funny.

We each used our cell phones a little bit while we were traveling, and the extra charges we incurred for using our phones outside of Germany came out to a total of 16.04€. We also had to pay to do laundry 3 times when we didn t have free access to a washer, and that cost came to 20.60€ total.

So that s how much we spent traveling in Europe for two months! Everyone s travel budgets will be different, but this will give you a good starting point for a long trip in Europe. If you prefer more luxurious hotels or budget hostel dorms, you ll need to make adjustments when planning out your budget and saving for your own trip. In the coming weeks I will break these down by city and country so you can get a better idea of what it would cost to spend a week or two in some of these areas for vacation.

Japan on a Budget, Tips for Cheap Travel! Japan Travel Mate

Japan on a Budget, Tips for Cheap Travel!

Here s a non-exhaustive collection of ideas for travelling Japan without spending a lot of money. These ideas for cheap travel are somewhat random, and unordered, but take a look and you ll be sure to pick up a tip or two to save money on your Japan holiday.

    Things To Do In Japan

    In this article:

    Travel in off-peak times

Now this doesn t mean you will be missing the good weather. Peak times in Japan are during the major national holidays and the school holidays.

The best time is April. This is spring in Japan and students are at school, the cherry blossoms are blooming and the weather is great. September and October are good times also, it is autumn in Japan and everyone is back to school and work.

Around the end of April and beginning of May is Golden Week in Japan. 4 national holidays over a week, prices for accommodation go up and shinkansens are booked solid best to avoid this time!

Mid-July and all of August are summer holidays in Japan. which means peak domestic travel and hence, high prices on just about everything. It is easily the busiest time of year and also the hottest.

    Japan Rail Pass

When people tell me they re going to visit Japan, the first thing I ask them is have you bought your Japan Rail Pass yet?

The JR Pass is available to anyone on a tourist (Temporary Visitor) visa and gives you unlimited travel on all Japan Rail buses, trains and shinkansen (bullet trains) the only exception is you can t travel on the fastest express services.

The Japan Rail Pass just flash this pass at the ticket gates and stroll on through

At first glance, the pass may seem expensive. Last time I travelled to Japan on a tourist visa I paid about $600 AUD for a 3 week JR Pass. Consider this example: a return trip on the shinkansen (bullet train) from Nagoya to Okayama is normally about 24,000 yen (about $300 AUD). Osaka to Tokyo is much further and more expensive. I did about 6 of these trips during a 3 week stay, so I saved about $1000 AUD and saw a lot of the country.

7, 14 or 21 day passes are available and conditions are you must be travelling on a tourist visa and you have to purchase the JR Pass before you enter Japan. Check costs and buy a JR Pass online .

    Cheap shinkansen travel

If you can t get a JR Pass, but you don t want to take the bus, there are cheaper options for the shinkansen. You can buy an unreserved seat, which means a seat is not guaranteed. People tend to sit in the carriage vestibules and there is nothing wrong with that. Being a super fast train, you re not in for a long journey! But if you travel in off-peak times, and during the day (i.e. not the morning or evening when shinkansen is used for work travel) then you ll get a cheaper ticket AND a seat.

    JR West Shinkansen series 700.

Man sued for sharing cheap flight loophole

United Airlines is taking legal action against a 22-year-old traveller who uncovered a novel way to find cheaper flights and shared it online

    Comments

Aktarer Zaman founded the website Skiplagged.com in 2013. It helps travellers book flights using what it calls hidden city ticketing . The idea is that travellers wanting to fly from Dallas to Los Angeles, for example, are instructed to book a flight to an alternative destination, say San Francisco, with a stopover in Los Angeles. They then don t bother to take the last leg of their journey.

While it is not always the cheapest way to travel, Mr Zaman discovered that in many instances, it is. Airlines will often offer cut-price fares to attract fliers to regional airports but they sometimes route these flights through major hubs.

The strategy only works for those booking a one-way flight and travelling with carry-on luggage (hold luggage will automatically be sent to the final destination on the ticket).

But United, and the US-based flight booking website Orbitz, have claimed the entrepreneur s unfair website promotes strictly prohibited travel and is seeking $75,000 in compensation for loss of revenue.

Mr Zaman, a New York resident, insists that he has broken no law and is simply exposing an inefficiency in airline prices that has been common knowledge among aviation insiders for years.

My Best Airfare Deal for the Year

November 29, 2015 by Canadian Kilometers Leave A Comment

Generally, you don t have mileage running deals anymore, especially with less than 100% redeemable mile earnings, revenue based earning, and higher fares.

However, I booked the best airfare deal of the year just a month ago, when British Airways had an incredible fare sale on flights to Europe . Flights to London were advertised at $2015, but the actual price was even lower, at around $1800. However, as the day progressed, people discovered that it was working for continental Europe, allowing you to save on APD, which was roughly $220. The base fare was $476.

    $1500 Fare

However, what was even more amazing was that you could stack another discount on these fares. As an AARP member you can take $400 off on a business class fare . applicable to all J-class fare buckets. This let you lower the base fare to $76, with an all-in price of $1035. At that price, it already is a incredible deal for transatlantic business class fares, given that surcharges and taxes when flying British Airways on an award ticket is $800-900 in business class.

The final kicker when booking the fare, however, was that you could stack another promotion on it, which was using Avios to decrease the price of the ticket. Normally, this was only supposed to be used for fares to/from London and on British Airways metal only, but it was working on this fare.

With 30,000 Avios, you could take off $764. This meant you got a redemption value of 2.5 cents on your Avios. You can get these Avios when signing up for the American Express Gold Card or Business Gold Rewards Card. offering 25,000 and 40,000 points in signup bonuses, respectively.

Another $764 discount for 30,000 Avios

This resulted in my fare being only $301, and 30,000 Avios! In ticketing I managed to get the return on American s new 767 with staggered business class seats, and put in an open jaw between Madrid and Barcelona.

    Ticket Issued

This is relevant because it meant that you couldn t apply a systemwide upgrade on the fare (although irrelevant in this case), and it wouldn t be applicable for a promotion on tickets which had to be issued and operated by American.

    The Actual Trip

The first half of the trip went well. A friend decided to join me on this trip, and we flew Los Angeles London Madrid together. Club World was mediocre, although the A380 was nice.

    British Airways Club World

I would rank the seat itself as pretty much below any flat-bed business class product, while service and soft product were average. For $150 though, it was perfectly reasonable. Our flight landed delayed into London, meaning we had an agent greet us at the gate and sprint through Terminal 5 from concourse C to A by foot in 25 minutes. having to clear European transfer security as well.

For those of you who ve transited through London, you ll know how delightfully fun that is.

Luckily, we made the flight, and all was well.

On the return, things got a bit crazy. At the gate area, the boarding agents announced that our flight had been cancelled. This was actually the first time this year a flight had been cancelled on me, so it was totally surreal watching the surprise and shock from all the passengers in the gate area as everyone heard the announcement.

Since everyone had already cleared Schengen exit immigration, we had to go back through immigration, which was severely understaffed. I had my exit stamp crossed off.

    Exit Stamp

The line for rebooking was around 20 deep at this time at ticketing in the departure concourse, so I was doing what I always recommend when IRROPS occurs.

Look at availability online (or ask friends to help you), and call the elite/rebooking line via Skype.

I was on hold with AA while waiting in line, and managed to get rebooked even though American hadn t cancelled the flight officially in their system (it ended up actually leaving 3 hours and 40 minutes late, strangely enough).

My routing back to LA ended up being Barcelona London Heathrow New York JFK Los Angeles. The best part about this was that it was issued back on American (001) ticket stock, and in a flexible fare class (J/D).

As luck had it, I had to make another 35 minute connection in Heathrow, although I did make my flights and actually ended up landing an hour early in LAX compared to my original itinerary (although my long layover in New York got scrapped).

    Earning the Miles

This trip was a miles bonanza, given that I was AA elite at the time, I earned 100% bonus miles, as well as 25% class of service bonus on British Airways, and 50% on American. This meant:

    • 12,870 Base Redeemable Miles
    • 17,749 Elite and Class of Service Bonus Miles

However, this also stacked with two additional promotions. The first was the Trans-Atlantic Bonus, giving a bonus of 25,000 miles for each round-trip in business class across the Atlantic.

    TATL Bonus

    • 25,000 TATL Promo Miles

Finally, I also got to earn miles from American s Bonus Miles promotion for flights marketed and issued on American ticket stock. The IRROPS was especially helpful here, as my return thus become eligible for this promotion.

I earned 12,000 miles each on the LHR-JFK and JFK-LAX legs, and 1,000 miles for the MAD-LHR leg.

This meant I earned a total of 80,619 redeemable miles on this trip,  enough for a First Class one-way ticket to Asia. Even at a conservative valuation of 1.5 cents, that s $1200 in value back in miles. For $301, this was an incredible deal for a trip to Europe, even without the miles!

Nepal: 20 Important Tips for Nepal Travelers

    Share your knowledge

20 Things Every Nepal Traveler Needs to Know

The form of greeting in Nepal is “Namaste” performing by joining both palms together. It literally means “the divine in me salutes the divine in you”.

1 – Do not trek alone. There have been numerous disappearances of solo trekkers in recent years. Always hire a guide or trek with other people. There are online forums where  travelers can look for fellow-trekkers. This applies to everyone but especially women that are travelling single – they seem to more vulnerable. Always communicate your travel plans to your next of kin.

2 – Food safety – Avoid water that is not bottled or boiled. Avoid raw vegetables and pre-cut fruit as much as possible.

3 – Even though Nepal is known for its pristine environment and beauty – not the highways and major city streets. They are crowded with traffic, full of smoke and bumpy and dusty. Hence travelling on a bicycle or a motorbike for the most part is not advisable. There are some off-road mountain bike trails that are ok to do.

4 – Do not give money to beggars that you see on the streets. Even though they look pitiful, your giving away of money encourages them only to beg for more. If you really care support one of many charity organizations working in Nepal.

5 – Be sure to exchange back all the Nepalese currencies before you leave. They are not accepted (or even exchanged for that matter) outside of Nepal. Besides, taking currency out of the country is against the law.

6 – Do not touch someone’s head or sit showing the bottom of your feet towards them. It is considered rude.

7 – Do not fully rely on schedules and times that are committed to you whether in verbal or written while you are in Nepal. They may not commence in time as stated or committed and may end up disrupting all your subsequent schedule. Have time buffer as much as you can between your major plans and activities, especially if you have a hard stop date that you need to fly out by.

8 – Always be alert/aware of “Bandhs” (Strikes – where no transportation is allowed) as they can alter all your travel plans substantially.

9 – Do not assume that “ganja” (marijuana) is legal in Nepal. It is not. Even though it is a common weed on hillsides you can get in trouble for picking it and carrying it for consumption purpose.

10 – Do not assume that when a Nepali says “yes” or shakes the head in affirmation that it is a done deal or they agree with you. Re-confirm using simplest of words but being as direct as possible to make sure.

11 – Stay away from dance bars in KTM and PKR. These are tourist traps where they scam you on buying alcohol and food at much inflated prices. Some of these places have a history of intimidation and violence.

12- If you are planning to apply for the Visa at the airport, make sure to have passport size photo available. Plan B is to have your photo taken at the booth at the airport.

13- There are daily scheduled power outages. Have a flashlight handy all the times.

14 – All nightlife pretty much ends by 10 pm with only a few places around the Thamel area that may stay open a little later.

15 – Bring a universal plug and voltage adapter kit for your Electronics. Nepal uses 220V.

16 – Keep in mind that there may be an entrance fee to some of the common temples and public areas applicable only to foreigners ranging anywhere from 250R’s – 700R’s.

17 – Always have some tissue paper and hand sanitizer with you at all times – and note that some of the toilets may require squatting.

18 – Insist for a Running Meter in the Taxi. After 10 PM you do pay double of the meter fare however – that’s the commonly accepted norm.

19 – Avoid displaying food around monkeys around temples, as they are used to snatching it.

20 – Support the NON-Plastic Initiative, please limit your use of plastic items, and help make Nepal a better place.

Tool for finding cheap flights from departure city without entering destination

Not exactly a mileage run question, but I think this is the most appropriate place.

Is there a website I can use to find the least expensive flights from a departure city on a specific date? For example, if I want to see all the cheap flights departing from Boston next Friday so I can determine if any of them are warm and worth going to, is there a tool I can use?

I was using FareCompare like a different thread suggests, but I cannot figure out to use specific dates.

I also tried using Expedia s dream tracker, but all the pop ups on the map are a big pain in the butt.

I ve been hesitant to post this on Flyer Talk because I m sure it s answered someplace and I did not want snarky use the search responses. However, their forum search is not a great tool when they are so many posts.

    EDIT TO SHARE SOME RESPONSES:

Here are some of the recommendations:

Great for constructing a mileage run, but not (yet) friendly for just finding cheap flights for a quick getaway:

Simulates travel within our solar system to scale in 2D (everything is on a flat galactic plane). Orbits of the planets and moons are limited to being circular and are not calculated themselves. But the mass and scale of every item and the distances are simulated. Scale is synchronized to time, so if you zoom out, time runs faster. This helps pass the time for interplanetary distances. In fact you can zoom out enough to reach Pluto in a few seconds. Nothing past the edge of our solar system is simulated; so don t venture out of site. The player s ship trajectory and speed is fully calculated using the gravity of the center of the closest strongest attractor. This makes landing on some moons very interesting. Phobos mass is so tiny compared to Mars , you actually have to go beneath the surface of Phobos in order to make it s center the closest strongest attractor. While surface contact is calculated collision damage is not. Acceleration is fixed, but like everything else, is scaled to the display. So acceleration always remains the same when measured in pixels per second per sec second. Rather than rotate the ship, the universe was rotated around it, as far as the display. Coordinates can be displayed and are based on the center the closest strongest attractor. If there is any object to this game, it would be traveling to, and landing on, every planet.

50 Kick-Ass Female Travel Blogs to Follow in 2014

You want to travel, but don’t know where to start. You want to start reading blogs for inspiration, but are overwhelmed by the options. New travel blogs are being started everyday; how on earth can you keep up?!

You can t. So I m here to help. Since I m constantly being impressed by my peers (and am online, um, a lot), I thought I d make it easy for you and share the 50 female travel blogs that inspire me the most.

    Hover over me to pin!

    Some notes about the list:

    • There are a lot of amazing travel blogs out there. I focused on solo females leading lives of adventure (often on a budget!), because I figured that s who you d identify with best.
    • Also, I chose blogs that have personal stories of growth and inspiration (and not just “5 things to do in ), because I like to pretend these ladies are my friends!
    • They re organized alphabetically under seven categories. Not to pigeonhole any of the blogs most of them could surely fall under many but hopefully they’ll help you narrow down which ones you want to follow.
    • If you re looking for a way to follow multiple blogs, I recommend Feedly. which is a free RSS feed manager.
    • Or, follow this Twitter list that Brigid of Becoming the B Boss was kind enough to create!

Some of these blogs are hugely popular, while others are still growing. I hope you’ll find a few you haven’t read before, and that they ll inspire you to travel in 2014. I know each and every one of them inspires me!

The Best Rental Car Deals for Road Trips: Money Smart Life

The Best Rental Car Deals for Road Trips

    August 3, 2011

Rental car deals are in high demand with many travelers expecting higher air fare costs this summer. Some of those travelers will forge on, willing to pay the higher price to get to their dream destination. But with many Americans still unemployed or just recently having found new employment the high price of flying may cause them to consider vacations closer to home and send them in search of rental car discounts.

Taking a regional road trip in a rental car doesn t have to break the bank, especially when compared with flying across the country. Instead of increasing your maintenance costs or worrying if your car can survive a road trip, you borrow the rental agency s car for a known cost and call it a day. If the car has maintenance problems that weren t caused by an accident, it s not your problem. They ll swap you out into a new car and get you going.

Tips for Saving on Rental Cars

Renting a car can also get pretty expensive, but not if you know how to look for the best deals. Use the following tips to maximize your savings on rental cars. I worked in the rental industry for about a year and this is how I would go about getting the best deal.

    Finding the Best Deal

There is no one best way to find the best deal on rental cars, but knowledge is power. Things you need to know:

What s the business model? Rental car agencies go after different types of business. Some focus on repair work while your car is in the shop. Others focus on business travelers and only have airport locations. Knowing the company s business model will help you determine their down times. You can get a better deal during slow periods when they have a lot of extra cars on hand.

    • For example, Enterprise has thousands of locations across the country. They focus on being in your neighborhood and deal with a lot of insurance and car repair rentals. That means their cars are in high demand Monday through Friday. On Friday the body shops finish up, and the agency has extra inventory over the weekend. You can get amazing deals on the weekend. More on this in a moment.

What s in demand? During the summer months the most in demand vehicles are SUVs and minivans. This is especially true around holidays like Memorial Day or the 4th of July. You ll need to book well in advance or risk missing out.

Know the car sizes. Check out the company s website and be familiar with their car classes. Booking a smaller vehicle will save you money, but don t be surprised if it is really small.

    Check Online Specials First

The internet is one of the best places to find widely advertised deals on rental cars. Check all of the popular agency s websites first. You know these deals are legitimate because it is coming straight from the source. Follow that up with a check of large travel aggregation websites like Kayak. They ll be able to spot some of the secret or less advertised deals that you can t find without a lot of extra work.

For example, say Enterprise has their $9.99 weekend special going. You can pay as little as $10 per day for three days, and get 300 total miles to use on your rental for a compact size car. That s a 60% discount off the regular rental price of $24.99 in my area. A full size car can be had for $19.99 per day that s 43% off the regular price of $34.99.

Budget has a similar deal. They offer $5 off for every weekend day you have a rental. A 3 day rental (Friday to Monday) would have $15 knocked off the final price. How can they afford to do this? Again, they have a lot of inventory on the weekends. Having vehicles on the road for as little as $30 in revenue is better than having the cars sit on the lot for $0 in revenue.

One way to make the deal even sweeter is to use a rental car credit card that offers rewards or discounts when you reserve your car online. Just be aware that not all deals can be combined so you might not be able to use the credit card discount along with an advertised special.

    Pick Up the Phone

Pick up the phone and call your local branch. Have their website pulled up and know what discounts they are currently offering. Let them know of your plans, and have them walk you through the best deal they can offer. When they re done telling you the price, tell them that s not low enough or ask if there is anything they can do to get you to reserve the car today. They may be able to find a discount to put on your rental to drop the price down a bit. Talking to a live human being that works at your local branch gives you an advantage over computer systems.

    Book with Travel Partners

You can also try booking with travel partners. If you re booking a hotel room you may be able to get a package deal with one of their preferred car rental agencies.

    Negotiate at the Counter

You have negotiating leverage. Unlike hotel reservations, many rental agencies do not charge you for not showing up for your reservation. Once you are there they want to make sure you leave happy. You can book a lower class vehicle and try to negotiate your way into a larger vehicle at a discounted price.

In fact, the representative behind the counter may try to do convince you first. Many companies will run up-sell competitions and rewards their reps for selling you from a smaller vehicle class into something bigger, even if it isn t at full price. They re getting more revenue for having your reservation out on the road. You can also try asking for discounts based on:

    • The rate your insurance company gets (which is much, much cheaper than retail). You likely won t get the full discount, but they may knock the price off a bit.
    • Memberships you have (AAA, AARP, etc.)
    • Your company s corporate discount

Granted, this only works when the company has a lot of excess inventory sitting on the car lot. You won t find much negotiating room if you re renting their next to last car. If they don t rent to you they ll find another customer to put into that car.

    Consider Gas Mileage

With gas nearing or over $4 per gallon in many parts of the country, be sure to check on gas mileage first. Taking 4 friends on a road trip to the beach? Riding in style in a massive SUV may seem great, but you ll be guzzling gas the whole way (along with paying higher rental costs in the first place). Those 4 people would easily fit into a standard or full size car, saving you money on gas and rental charges.

    Document the Car s Condition

Make sure you document the car s condition very well. Renting cars happens very fast. There is important paperwork you sign, including an agreed upon condition of the car. If you don t mark any of the current damage (knicks, dings, dents) on the contract you may be held liable for them when you return the vehicle. Read the fine print on the rental car insurance and make sure you understand what s covered and what s not. In this technology covered age I would recommend taking photos or a video of the walk around on the car on your smartphone or camera. It will help defuse any situations that pop up when you return the car.

The Best Travel Deals for Federal Government Employees

Representing 2.8% of the US GDP, travel and tourism is becoming more expensive for consumers each year. If you work for the federal government, you most likely travel more often than the average American between a combination of business and leisure trips. As summer approaches, it’s a good time to start planning a family vacation. To keep your piggybank intact during this season of fun, review the following travel deals and tips meant specifically for government employees.

3 Ways to Get the Most Out of a Travel Experience

These tips, combined with available discounts, will help book a memorable vacation at a reasonable cost.

    • Ask for discounts As a government employee, always ask if there are government discounts available with any vendor. Many national and international hospitality providers offer government discounts, but do not often advertise this benefit. When it comes to getting the most out of your travel experience, it never hurts to ask if there is a discount available before booking.
    • Do research – On average, the cost to travel domestically is over $200 per day, per person. That amount can sharply increase for those traveling internationally. Despite access to the internet, statistics show less than 30% of travelers are using websites and social media to find vacation deals. Performing thorough research on the best deals by using internet search and travel sites and asking friends for referrals is often an effective method of finding travel deals.
    • Stay plugged in – Travel websites for government employees, like Fedsave.com, distribute newsletters with travel deals and discounts. Staying tuned in to these special offers simplifies the planning process while saving money on travel expenses.

By staying up-to-date on the latest vacation deals, federal government employees can reduce the amount spent on lodging, airfare and transportation as well as the cost of accessing the world’s most often-visited destinations.

    Discount Vacation Packages

One-stop resources for vacation packages are an easy way to complete travel planning and booking. When looking for the best deal on complete vacations, three websites emerge as the best resource for government employees.

    • Gaylord Palms Resort – A premier resort in Orlando, Florida, Gaylord Palms is a top destination when planning to visit any of the area’s world-renowned attractions. An extension of Marriott, Gaylord Palms is less than 10 minutes from Disney, Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

Wherever you plan to stay, discounts are available specifically for government employees from the best hotels and resorts in the world.

    Transportation

Transportation can represent over one-third of  total travel expenses. Whether arriving, exploring or leaving a destination, transportation costs will factor in to the overall expense of travel. Many top rental car companies offer government discounts, including the five listed below.

    • Hertz – For both official business and leisure use, Hertz offers discounted car rental fares for government employees. Benefits of choosing Hertz include lower rates, no-cost upgrades and free membership in Hertz’ reward program.
    • Dollar – Another national car rental company, Dollar offers rate discounts and membership in their rewards program for government employees. Dollar does not charge government employees a fee for underage drivers or additional drivers.
    • Alamo – Between a free one-day car rental and rate reductions. Alamo’s government employee discount can reduce transportation expenses whether traveling for business or leisure.
    • Avis – Regardless of the reason for travel, Avis Car Rental offers rate discounts for federal government employees. If traveling on official business, Avis provides free unlimited mileage, free insurance and competitive rates.
    • Enterprise Rent-A-Car – At over 200 locations, Enterprise Rent-A-Car provides government employees with rate discounts for business and leisure .

With thousands of locations combined, these car rental companies go above and beyond to save money for government employees and their families.

    Save-As-You-Go Travel for Government Employees

Saving money on travel expenses for a single trip is one thing, but is it possible to accrue discounts over time? That’s exactly what Gov Vacation Rewards offers government employees. Designed only for government employees and military personnel, participation in Government Vacation Rewards offers discounts on cruises, vacation destinations, lodging and more. As a free service for government employees, Government Vacation Rewards pays for itself quickly with up-to-date access to the latest deals, specials and discounts. Discounted vacation packages include beachfront resorts, Disney World, Las Vegas and a variety of cruise destinations.

Given the abundance of travel deals available to government employees, there is never a reason to pay full price for a great vacation.

The Top Online Travel Booking Sites for January 2014 – Skift

The Top Online Travel Booking Sites for January 2014

2014 will be an interesting year to watch from traffic perspective. While Priceline Group has a huge lead, Expedia and Tripadvisor family will continue to duke it out.

    Rafat Ali

Editor s Note: Late last year we started a once-a-quarter feature on top trafficked sites in various sectors in travel, using monthly data from SimilarWeb . We have found SimilarWeb’s traffic stats to be a relatively good barometer of web activity and much more accurate than other traffic comparison sites at least as far as proportional comparison goes.

We re starting 2014 by looking at the top online booking sites in travel. Keep in mind this does not account for direct sites of travel brands (airlines/hotels) themselves, which we have done in separate lists previously. Also, our threshold is roughly 5 million visits per month, and does not count any app activity, hence sites like HotelsCombined, Hipmunk and others don t show up.

Some observations on the list below:

    • Compared to our first look for October data last year. we re now grouping country sites of same brand together, to get a better sense of the scale.
    • Booking.com is still the king in travel, by a large margin over Expedia and TripAdvisor.
    • Adding up Booking.com s sister sites Priceline.com, Agoda, and Kayak, the Priceline family is the Sinaloa cartel of travel to use a timely phrase.
    • TripAdvisor.com is still bigger than Expedia.com on a standalone basis, but Expedia s family of sites, including Hotels.com and Hotwire.com brings it neck and neck with the TripAdvisor family of sites.
    • HotelUrbano.com, the Brazilian hotel booking site, continues to be among the top sites in travel, though we understand a lot of that is traffic it is buying from various sources.
    • Orbitz and Travelocity are not among the top ten booking sites in travel anymore, and will likely to have tough road going ahead.
    • Cheapoair.com is among the top ten, but we understand a lot of its traffic is marketing-spend dependent.
    • Indian sites MakeMyTrip, Yatra, and Cleartrip continue to impress, and clearly show the long term potential of Indian sites.
    • Airbnb is now among the top 15 travel booking sites on the planet, a huge feat for a company that created a whole new market.
    • Homeaway.com and VRBO.com, part of the HomeAway family, are the largest alternative accommodation sites on the planet.
    • Skyscanner s network is among the top 20, but still has a long way to go if it wants to get up to the next run of top ten.
    • ThomasCook and Thomson.co.uk (part of TUI) are among the only traditional travel agencies showing up in the ranks both of them are European strong.
    • The big omission is Trivago, which has lots of country sites, each with lower than 5 million threshold we re using for rankings. Hence their overall absence from this list.
    • Any other insights based on this data below? Any other big names we re missing? Post in comments below.

Tips for Finding Cheap Flights to Asia #jamaica #travel

    #best cheap flights
    #

    Cheap Flights to Asia

By Greg Rodgers. Asia Travel Expert

Greg Rodgers is an experienced travel writer, photographer, and world nomad. In 2005, Greg traded his corporate office for a backpack and set out to see the world; he never came back.

Crossing the Pacific is simply daunting. Anyone who has flown to Hawaii knows the pain of that long flight, particularly those flying from eastern parts of the United States. Now, take that flight and double it — Hawaii is only roughly halfway to Asia!

With cheap food and accommodation, Asia is a great budget destination; however, one dilemma exists: getting on the ground in the first place! Unfortunately, cheap flights to Asia can be difficult to find; the ticket price proves to be a barrier for many Americans who would otherwise love to visit Asia.

Fortunately, there are some tricks for getting better fares, or at least reducing the pain of ticket prices a little.

Read about how to beat jet lag — you re going to need it — then use these tips for increasing your odds of finding cheap flights to Asia!

    Get Yourself to Los Angeles

LAX tends to have a higher volume of flights to Asia than many other US cities. Good deals from other parts of the US to Los Angeles can be found from Delta, Southwest Airlines. JetBlue, and Allegiant Air .

Consider actually breaking up your flight in Los Angeles. For example: Rather than booking a flight from Louisville straight to Bangkok, you may find a cheaper fare by booking a flight to LAX, then taking a different carrier later that evening from LAX to Bangkok.

San Francisco (SFO) is another great option for finding cheap flights to Asia.

    Break Up Your Flights

As mentioned above, sometimes one carrier can fly to Asia for cheaper than another because of volume. Try using a domestic airline to get to the west coast, then switch to one of the Asian airlines for crossing the Pacific.

Don t be hesitant about using Asia-based airlines; they often have better food and more legroom than our own airlines!

These Asian airlines fly out of Los Angeles and often have cheap flights to Asia:

    • Korean Air
    • Air China
    • China Southern
    • Asiana Airlines
    • China Airlines
    • EVA Air
    • Japan Airlines
    • Thai Airways
    • China Eastern
    • Singapore Airlines
    • Cathay Pacific

Learn to Love the Budget Airlines

Although devoid of frills — at least free ones, anyway — Asia is blessed with excellent budget airlines. Tickets between countries can often be found for less than US $50. AirAsia — based at Malaysia s new KLIA2 terminal in Kuala Lumpur — is the largest budget airline in Asia; they are your best bet for finding a cheap hop between large cities.

Finding cheap flights on budget airlines is usually done by booking well in advance. Otherwise, sign up for AirAsia s newsletter or follow them on Twitter to find out about last minute specials.

    Always Fly Into Big Cities

Obviously, flying into Bangkok is going to be cheaper than flying into smaller airports such as Phuket or Chiang Mai. If you find a flight into a neighboring country for significantly cheaper than your planned destination, consider taking that flight, then making a hop using AirAsia or one of the other budget airlines that fly between capital cities in Asia.

Here are a few cities that serve as major hubs in Asia:

    Consider Ground Transportation

Once on the ground in your target country, you have a few more transportation options. If time is less of a factor, consider taking the train or even a bus from the capital city onward to your destination. For instance, flying into Bangkok and taking the overnight train to Laos is often cheaper than just flying into Vientiane, the capital city.

Ground transportation prices in Asia are usually excellent deals; however, be prepared for crowded buses, bumpy roads, and delayed trains in developing countries.

Do Not Assume That All Booking Sites Show the Best Deal

Sometimes the large flight consolidators and booking sites do not have access to small budget airlines databases; you may or may not be finding the lowest fares available, despite whatever promises are made.

Insider Tip: Sometimes booking sites use nefarious means to make you want to book a flight faster. They may show flights for days around the day you picked as more expensive, so that you assume prices are going up. Some sites will even save your previous flight searches — because they know you want a particular flight — then add an additional amount to that flight price when you return to the site. Try clearing the cookies on your browser each time to avoid these scams.

    Use Frequent Flier Programs

Flying across the Pacific and missing nearly 10,000 frequent flier miles is a shame; two return trips to Asia could easily net you a free flight. Chances are that you ll be hooked on Asia the first time and will want to return — why not let those miles add up?

These airlines offer cheap flights to Asia and participate in Delta s Skymiles program :

    • Aeroflot Russian Airlines
    • China Airlines
    • China Southern
    • China Eastern
    • Korean Air
    • Malaysia Airlines
    • Thai Air Asia
    • Vietnam Airlines

    Advisories

    Advisories

MEXICO – Exercise a high degree of caution

There is no nationwide advisory in effect for Mexico. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution due to violence, especially in those parts of the country experiencing a deteriorating security situation. High levels of criminal activity, as well as demonstrations, protests and occasional illegal roadblocks, remain a concern throughout the country.

We strongly recommend travel to Mexico by air in order to avoid land border crossings through potentially dangerous regions. You are advised to sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service if travelling to or residing in Mexico.

The Yucatan Peninsula, which includes the tourist destinations of Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Merida and Progreso, has not been significantly affected by violence or insecurity.

Some municipalities popular with Canadian tourists in the state of Jalisco are experiencing an increase in drug-related violence, as Mexican security forces battle organized criminal groups who have engaged in retaliatory actions such as arson attacks against businesses, gas stations and banks, and blockades using burning cars. Bystanders could be affected by this violence and should be aware of their surroundings at all times. Remain vigilant throughout the state and exercise extreme caution. Stay in tourist areas and follow local media closely. If you do venture outside urban areas, exercise extreme caution, including on major highways. Avoid travelling at night. Canadians are advised against non-essential travel to areas of Jalisco that border the states of Michoac n and Zacatecas as the security situation along these borders continues to be unstable (see Regional Advisory below).

Due to high levels of organized crime in rural areas, including on major highways, you should exercise extreme caution in the states of Baja California (North), Morelos, Nayarit, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Zacatecas. Popular tourist areas, such as South Nayarit (from Nuevo Vallarta to La Pe ita de Jaltemba), and the cities of Tepoztlan, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosi, Xalapa, Veracruz, and Zacatecas remain relatively safe.

Regional Advisory for the northern states

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada advises against non-essential travel to the northern states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Le n (except the city of Monterrey), Sinaloa (with the exception of Mazatl n), Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos), and Tamaulipas due to continuously high levels of violence linked to organized crime. Consult the Security tab for more information.

    Special Offer 2

    Group of singles on tour

Welcome to our website. Here you will be able to find suppliers of all types of travel for singles to all sorts of places you have always wanted to go with other like minded single people.  With a wide variety of choices and manufacturers, travel for singles will have you making friends from all over the world and all types of different backgrounds.

Whether you want to go to exotic locations and do thrill seeking activities around different locations around the world or if you just want to enjoy the cruise experience and meet friends over dinner or drinks it is totally up to how much or how little you want to do.

Travel for singles is one of the hottest topics on the web. Sometimes deciding where to go however can be challenging. Of course, you want to go where there are plenty of other singles but you also want to go to the most romantic setting possible.

With this in mind, we are reviewing some of the most romantic cities in the world. After all, what better way to start your love story than in the most romantic, kiss-inspiring places on the entire planet?

Call it cliché but Paris has long been said to be one of the most romantic places on earth and while it has grown over the years into a very busy city, it hasn’t lost its romantic charm.

While Paris is a great place to visit for couples, it’s also a great place to fall in love. From wine vistas to corner coffee houses, if you are looking for a romantic type, you just can’t beat Paris for its well-cultured singles and fine places to meet them.

    Travel around Florida in style

If you love the beach but hate the scene – you know, the annoying spring breakers and those beer bong guys – than the Florida Keys are just for you. Mostly made up of cozy bed and breakfast types, the Keys tend to bring a little pricier price tag, which helps you to avoid the allure of the crowds who are coming in by the millions.

The quiet setting of the Keys is perfect for relaxing and meeting singles who are like-minded. From a stroll on the beach to a trip to a local restaurant, which usually specialize in the catch of the day – everything under the sun in the Keys promises to bring lots of opportunities to meet wonderful singles.

From beautiful canals to timeless architecture, Venice is a romantic and timeless must see for singles all over the world. From statues and fine art to wineries and vineyards, Venice promises to be an experience of a lifetime for singles. Venice while a widely visited city still keeps with the pace of an old world. This makes it perfect for meeting and greeting and possibly finding Mr. or Mrs. Right. Hey, you never know – you could move to Venice someday or bring home a loveable Italian to meet mom and dad.

When it comes to travel for singles, you have to choose what is best for you. There are so many different options available and so many varied groups of singles if your the adventure type look at something along those lines that will take you off the beaten track.

Further information for disabled or senior singles :

Having  just been on a cruise with a disabled partner I can vouch that if you tell the cruise line of your requirements in advance you will find that your needs are more than catered for.  On board the cruise ship has dialysis machines not just one but several.  This allows people that require dialysis the opportunity of being able to be hooked up while they are travelling whereas previously they would of have to stay close to a hospital.  Booking early will also be able to get a disabled cabin which has the larger bathrooms for wheelchair access.

Age or being single is not a barrier to cruises or tours. choose the right tour and ask as many questions that you want before booking so you will have peace of mind while your away.  You don t need to travel to exotic places around the world for months on end there are many tours that will go for one or two weeks, but sometimes that is all that is needed to recharge the battery.

Today, whether your fit and able bodied or your in a chair, need special medical attention while you travel, if your an adventurous single or you just want to pack up and get away.  There is so much on offer by travelling as a single meeting others making new friends or perhaps a little romance.  Who cares though why you want to travel just do it and have some fun, hanging out in places that interest you will help you meet others who are interested in the same things.

While millions of international visitors flock to Rome each year, the Eternal City marches to its own drum. No amount of foreign tourism seems to affect Rome s distinct atmosphere and culture; on the contrary, visitors should be prepared to yield to Roman customs, as touring etiquette is clearly defined.

    Language

While many people in Rome speak English, don t assume the person you are approaching with a question does. In general, Romans are a proud people and some may think you re rude to ask them a question in English. Use an Italian phrase book to ask touristy questions. Most natives are delighted by foreigners attempts to speak Italian — chances are, when you try to ask a question in Italian, the locals will smile and grant you permission to speak in English.

Traveling the World for 9 Months on Under $10,000

    Written by Wilson Cusack

Last January I was in my senior year of high school and, after finishing my college applications, decided to begin exploring alternative options for the next year. I had a desire to see and understand the world’s problems for myself, and a deeper religious obligation to be a part of the solutions. That, set alongside the realization that the people and organizations I wanted to work with were only an email away, was enough to get me searching.

After looking at different options, I was accepted to a fellowship that would facilitate an entire gap-year for me. I was excited about it, but it seemed to be sort of a backwards fellowship, one in which I had to pay them: to the tune of around $20,000.

After several conversations I came to the realization that I could put together my own “gap-year”, work with people and organizations whom I personally chose, and do it all for much cheaper than $20,000. It’s that effort that I’m now trying to chronicle, to encourage and counsel the other people thinking about taking on the great unknown of opportunity.

To keep it as true to what as you might expect on your own trip, I’ve included almost all of the total costs of the trip: all the groceries, restaurants, random charges I can’t remember, metro cards, leisure travel; almost everything. I figure if you do your own gap year, you’ll end up pursuing as many random adventures as I did and so I want to keep the figures as realistic as possible. The only things I’ve not included are things that were particular to me, such as costs of camera equipment I needed to pick-up for work along the way and gifts for friends back home.

I began the trip in Guatemala, working in the communities around the garbage dump in Guatemala City with Potter’s House. an indigenous partner of a US based organization, endPoverty.

I was connected to endPoverty through a friend who recommended and introduced me to them. At first they were very hesitant, to say the least. They’d never taken anyone straight out of high school, and I’d be the first volunteer they’d ever sent to their partner in Guatemala. But after several interviews, both over the phone and in person, they agreed to take me on.

Before moving to Guatemala City, though, I wanted to brush up on my Spanish, as I’d only taken it for two years in high school and had forgotten most of it (thinking, “When am I ever going to use this?” Oops). So I first spent two weeks in Antigua, Guatemala studying Spanish six hours a day, five days a week at a language school there.

Once in Guatemala City with Potter’s House, I spent one day a week working with the micro-finance team, three days a week working with the international marketing team, and one day teaching English to sixth graders.

    August – November, Guatemala
