10 Thanksgiving Games to Make the Holiday Fun for Everyone

Thanksgiving day can be a long one and you may need activities to fill up the time as you wait for the turkey to cook or as you recover between turkey and pie. Especially if you have a crowd, it’s a great time to get some party games going. Here are ideas for games to suit all ages and, especially, games that all ages can play and enjoy together.

Thanksgiving Bingo (Flavor Wire): This version of bingo is for adults and is probably the most fun if you’re the cynical type. Flavor Wire has created four humorous bingo cards and participants cover the squares as the day progresses and they observe things like running out of gravy, someone coming late, a drunk uncle, a pet stealing food, someone starting a story with “when I was your age.”

“The Best” (The Idea Room): describes this game which can be played any time of year but is particularly well suited for a large gathering. You divide into teams and compete in silly contests like who can stand on one foot the longest, who has the tallest thumb and any other contests you can invent.

Pass the Nut (Improvements Catalog): Don’t worry, this is not a version of passing an orange from neck to neck, but with a small nut — that sounds a bit too intimate. This is essentially a relay race where teams carry small objects like nuts and cranberries from bowl to bowl with chopsticks.

Turkey Tag (Let’s Get Together): This is an outdoor game for kids and adults and is a Thanksgiving-themed version of flag tag. The gist is that each person wears three clothespins on their clothing and then everyone runs around trying to remove clothespins from everyone else.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Drinking Game: If watching the televised parade is a part of your family’s annual tradition, mix it up by making it into a drinking game (and not necessarily alcoholic!). A few years ago Chicago Now published their ideas for prompts like “Drink every time a musical performer messes up the lip syncing”. The bloggers at Cookies Sangria have a similar list (although they suggest doing exercises instead of drinking!) including doing a set of jumping jacks when “the hosts refer to bad parade weather in the distant past ( 25 years ago)”.

Top Turkey Artist (Creative Youth Ideas): This game is a contest to see who can draw the best turkey without looking. The version described here involves putting a book on your head and using that as a drawing surface, but it seems simpler to just blindfold people.

Card Games: A good card game for a mixed-ages group is Uno, if you have a deck. Other games that are easy to learn are Crazy Eights, Hearts, I Doubt It and Spoons. If you’re fuzzy on some of the rules for a card game, Bicycle Cards has a free app with rules to 75 card games that you can download. For young children not ready for true card games, I’m a fan of the Spot It cards that don’t require reading or counting (my kids beat me all the time so it’s still fun for grown-ups) . The original if fun and there are a ton of spin-offs so you’re sure to find one to suit your group.

Board Games: Board games are kind of a no-brainer. Choose based on the age groups you have or break into a kids group and an adult group. Favorites of mine for adults include Scattergories, Trivial Pursuit, Outburst and Taboo. Good ones for kids are Candy Land, Chutes Ladders and Richard Scarry’s Busytown Eye Found It!.

Parlor Games (One Kings Lane): Parlor games are games for groups to play that don’t require a board or anything purchased. The most classic and well known is charades. If you don’t know any, here’s a list of modern twists on classic parlor games.

Conversation starters: This is less of a “game” and more of a fun way to spark conversations, especially as you’re sitting around the table. Either have guests write a few of their own questions or write them yourself ahead of time and then draw them from a bowl and go around the table taking turns answering them. Questions can be anything you like, such as “Where have you always wanted to travel, but haven’t yet?”, “What is your least favorite food?”, “What’s something most people here don’t know about you?”

10 Best Car Games for Kids

Road Trips

Travel games for kidsKeep kids entertained with toys, games, and apps. (Flickr: jencu)

What do parents dread most about family road trips? It’s not the cost of filling up the gas tank. It’s also not traffic or toll roads or Sunday drivers. It’s the thought of their own little cherubs stuck together in tight quarters for hours. Oh, the backseat squabbling. The poking. The whining. The impatient cries of “Are we there yet?” Just. make. it. stop.

Luckily, there are lots of ways to keep kids happily entertained and enjoying each other’s company . And the best part? You can achieve it without spending a dime. Here are our picks for the 10 best free car games for kids:

1. I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time . The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

2. Road Trip Bingo. This fun game combines bingo with a scavenger hunt . Give each child a flat surface, such as a clipboard or hardcover book, to put on his or her lap. Each player gets a free printable bingo card and a zip-lock bag with 16 pennies. When a player spies an item on his card, he covers the picture with a penny. Just like in regular bingo, the first player to cover all the squares in a straight line wins.

3. License Plate Game. When we were kids, everyone seemed to play the license plate game on family road trips . Armed with a pad of paper, we would write down the name of each state as we spotted it. The goal, of course, was to nab all 50 states. If we were lucky, we’d bag the Canadian provinces, too. Nowadays we love the ease of an updated free printable license plate game, where kids cross off the US states and Canadian provinces as they spy them. For older kids learning US geography, we recommend the map version, which shows how far away each car originated.

4. Tic Tac Toe. All you need are two players and a pencil to play this popular standby. Player One places an X on the grid, Player Two plots an O. They continue to take turns until one player has three across. Hand your kids several copies of our printable Tic Tac Toe template and let them do the rest.

5. I’m Going on a Picnic. This alphabet-based memory game is great for kids 5 and up. You don’t need a game board or any materials. The game can be played with as few as two players, but it’s more fun when the whole family joins in. The first player says “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing. ” followed by something that begins with A, such as apples. The second player repeats what the first person said, but adds something that begins with B. So she might say “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples and bananas.” And so on with C, D, and the rest of the alphabet. If someone forgets an item, she is out. To be fair, feel free to be lenient and give hints to younger players. The last player to be able to recite all the items on the list wins.

6. 20 Questions. This easy-peasy game is great for young kids , thanks to its straightforward rules. Player One thinks of a person, place or thing. Everyone else takes turns asking questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. After each answer, the questioner gets one guess. Play continues until a player guesses correctly.

7. Connect the Dots. Why is it that all the best games are so gosh darn simple? This “make a box” game works best when each player uses a different colored pencil or crayon. You’ll find the quick set of directions on our free printable connect-the-dots game sheet.

8. Hangman. Generations of school-age kids have loved the original, low-tech version of “Wheel of Fortune.” The first player thinks of a person, place, movie or book title—it could be anything, really. Instead of writing out the saying, she leaves an underscore for each letter in each word. The second player guesses one letter at a time. If the mystery saying contains the letter, it is written in the correct place. If not, the first player draws a head on the hangman scaffold. When enough incorrect letters have been guessed, the dead body is complete and the second player loses. If the guesser solves the puzzle before the body is complete, he wins. Print out our free hangman game template, and you’re good to go.

9. The Preacher’s Cat. Here’s another alphabet-based memory game for school-age kids . The game centers around a sentence in which only two words change. To play, each player constructs the same sentence around a letter of the alphabet. Starting with A, the first player might say “The preacher’s cat is an awesome cat named Amy.” The second player replaces the two underlined words with others starting with A, such as, “The preacher’s cat is an adorable cat named Albert.” If a player can’t think of a new word, or if she repeats a word, she is out. The play continues with B, C, D, and so on, until there is one remaining player.

10. Spot the Car. For families with tween and teen car hounds, this scavenger hunt is a fun alternate to the license plate game. Instead of looking for different states, you’re looking for different car models. Use our printable game sheet to hold a family car scavenger hunt.

4 Ridiculously fun road trip games for adults

Combined comments & shares on social media

Road trips are an awesome way to create memories with friends and family. Once you have the right people, all you need are some snacks, music and a few games to make it fun.

Whether you want to start your road trip off on a high note, or are winding down to the destination and need a pick-me-up, road trip games can be a great way to keep people entertained.

    1. Guess Who? (10 Questions)

This game can be played by 2 passengers at a time. One passenger thinks of a person, famous or personal connection. The other person can ask 10 yes or no questions that can lead them to figure out who the person is. The best one to start with is typically “Is this person a female (or male)?” Another good one is “Do I know this person?” Based on the yes or no answers, the player can then narrow down who it might be.

    2. Hot Seat

Everyone can participate in this one. The hot seat is essentially an interview game where one passenger is asked five questions by anyone else in the car and they have to answer. You can choose to allow a veto for one, so they can avoid any super-awkward questions.

    3. A to Z

The objective of the game is to be the first one to spot things along the road trip that start with each letter of the alphabet in order. A for apple tree, and B for BMW will get you in the lead as the other people in the car try to catch up with their ABC call-outs along the way. Each passenger is responsible for keeping their own count, and no one can repeat the same thing twice.

    4. Waze

This isn’t a standard road-trip game, but it is a way to help other drivers along your trip. Waze (https://www.waze.com/) is a community-based traffic app which allows other drivers in your area to share real-time traffic tips. There are gaming aspects, like the ability to see other friends in the area, so rest stops and arrivals can be better coordinated.

I’ll be taking a long road trip from New York to Virginia Beach in September, and definitely will be doing all of these. What are some of your favorite road-trip games?

5 Games for the Road: How to Pass the Time With Nothing But Your Fellow Travelers for Entertainment

Subscribe to Our Under the Radar Newsletter

Your information will *never* be shared or sold to a 3rd party. Promise.

Bus and train trips, flights, delays in airports and train stations, hostels without TV or much light; the list of situations where a traveler has time to kill is long. That’s right — travel is not always exciting. There will be dull downtimes, and you may not always be able to read a good book. play road trip bingo, do crossword puzzles, or doodle in your journal .

That’s when you need a good repertoire of games to spontaneously play with your fellow travelers. Some will be popular games that you can find online and long-forgotten games from your childhood, and you might be surprised just how necessary they’ll be — and how much fun you’ll have — when you want to fill some of those inevitably empty hours on the road.

A quick confession: I’m a bit of a game geek anyway, and an English teacher to boot, so I’ve been known to start these games even at parties. But I promise that they have all been road tested on a real road, somewhere in Tunisia, Finland, Canada or Germany or any place where I was bored and without a book.

    #1 I Spy

You’ve probably all played I Spy a long time ago, but I recommend dredging it back up from your long-term memory. If you can’t, it starts off like this: “I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with A”, and the other players have to guess what object you can see. I’ve played this in hostels (especially those hostel living rooms that have trinkets from all over the world gathering dust there), on train rides and in planes, but it didn’t work too well in the desert. “I spy sand.”

How to play: I like to limit each person to three or four guesses. Otherwise, they’ll exhaust every item in the room that starts with “B” and you’ll soon run out of objects to use. I also like the jet lag variation — play it in a dark room at night when you can’t sleep because your body’s on some other clock, and see if you can actually remember what’s in the room around you.

    Mariano Kamp

    #2 Donna’s Alphabet Game

This is not the official name, but it’s the way I like to remember it after my old school friend Donna got a car load of us playing this on a stop-start motorway in southwest England. It’s simple, as long as you’re traveling on a road with signs (and even better, advertising) and these signs use our alphabet. Don’t try it in the western provinces of China, for example.

How to play: Logically, Donna’s Alphabet Game starts with A. Be the first person to spot the letter “A” in a sign and yell out the word: “A is in motorwAy!” Continue with B and get right through to Z. It sounds easy, but there will be a few tricky letters, and if you’re playing in a non-English speaking country then pronouncing the words will be a lot of fun, too. The way we play, there’s no winner — anybody can scream out the next letter when they see it — but natural competitiveness spurs everybody on anyway.

#3 Stadt, Land, Fluss: City, Country, River

This game has a German name because my German friends taught it to me — which is also perhaps why it always strikes me as being a bit intellectual, but still a lot of fun. It’s also a highly appropriate game for travelers to play because their geographical knowledge should be a bit better than average.

How to play: Choose three or four categories like the names of a city, country, river or lake. To be honest, I’m terrible with rivers so I always change the river category to something completely different — often food, because I like to talk about food. Take it in turns to challenge another player to think of a city, country and river all starting with a particular letter. If your friend challenges you with “D”, for example, you can win by getting out Dubai, Denmark and Danube in under sixty seconds — or whatever time limit you and your bored mates decide on.

Question Mark Art, Stuttgart Museum of Art -bast-

    #4 Twenty Questions

An oldie but a goodie, and you can make it topical by restricting the choice of “What am I?” to be something related to the region in which you’re traveling. I did have a friend, though, who would choose objects like “pyramid” while traveling through Egypt or “chocolate” in Switzerland, and then we could have made it just two questions rather than twenty.

How to play: Someone chooses an object, and everyone else asks them questions about it, but the only permitted answers are “Yes” or “No”. (Or in my rules, “irrelevant”, if I think saying yes or no will send the guessers along a completely wrong path I like to play fair!). If you’re playing with a group, whoever guesses the item correctly can choose the next word.

#5 For RTW Trippers: Kalgoorlie, Balladonia

I think it was my father who started this game when our family took a driving holiday across Australia. We were gone about two months and my sister and I, being about ten and twelve years old, needed a lot of entertainment.

How to play: This game only works with your traveling companions, and only on long trips. It’s more of a challenge than a game, but it always works for me. Simply start with the name of the town you stayed in first. On our trans-Australia trip, it was the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. You then try to name every other town you’ve stayed in, in chronological order. My sister and I were experts at this all those years ago, but today I can only remember the first and second stops.

There are tons of other word and guessing games you can play in those bored moments of travel, and you can adapt these games with endless variations, too. And while it might seem like just a way to kill time, playing games like these is something I really love about traveling. It’s almost as if we don’t give ourselves permission to have that kind of fun if we’re at home in our “real lives”.

Anyway, I’m very keen to learn some new games, too, so leave your favorite travel game tips in the comments. I promise to road test them soon.

Best Android tablet apps of 2016

Best Android tablet app for photos: AR effect

If you spend plenty of time admiring your holiday photos, Facebook photos, selfies, then you’ll want a photo suite that makes this pastime easier. For that, you’re going to need the best Android camera app and you should have some fun with it.

AR effect (Augmented Reality) by Sony adds special effects to your photos and videos. It makes your reality even better. You can make virtual scenes with your photos. The preloaded choices of animations include masks, fairytales, underwater or dinosaurs. There are tons more you can download from Google Play.

Creating your augmented reality scene is easy. You just choose your theme and the app automatically detects faces and surfaces and creates the scene around them. If you want to change something like a mask you just tap the face you want changed on your tablet.

Best tablet app for gaming: Traffic Rider

Traffic Rider is a first person, high-octane motorcycle game that’s best played on a tablet. The graphics are realistic and you feel like you’re moving through real traffic with the detailed circuit scenes.

With Traffic Rider you are rewarded for taking more risks. Close collision calls are essential to a winning strategy on the game. So you get extra thrills by getting some near accidents. When you get close to hitting another driver, you are rewarded with extra time. Some of the modes require you get real close to other drivers.

As you get better at the campaign mode you can unlock more motorcycles. There are 20 total bikes to unlock an each has its own handling, acceleration and braking. When you pass a circuit you get points that can buy more motorcycles or improve your abilities.

Best tablet app for surfing the internet: Pushbullet

Some of us use our tablets for hardcore productivity, but most of us use them for hardcore procrastination. I prefer to call it ”research” though. Whatever you call it, you can’t research much on a tablet without some great internet tools.

We’re not just talking about Google Chrome (but feel free to check our best Android browsers list). Internet essentials such as Pushbullet make your browsing experience so much better.

Best tablet app for exploring the world: NASA app

Tablets have larger displays than phones so are great for visual content. When was the last time you explored the planet with Google Earth? Did you know you can even go underwater now and search for the Loch Ness Monster?

The well the NASA app allows you to explore the entire world from a different perspective. It also lets you explore the entire universe.

Best Android tablet app for kids: Marble Mixer

If you’re not a kid (or act like a kid) yourself, you’ve probably bought a tablet primarily for your kids. Tablets are awesome for entertaining kids: they’re cheaper than consoles, with plenty of free games, educational potential and much less likely to end up with sticky goo clogging up the buttons.

There are so many awesome apps in the Play Store for kids it’s not funny, but some of our favorites include Educational Games for Kids, or if you’re more into interactive music jams, Music Hero. But our favorite app for occupying kids of the big and small variety is Marble Mixer, a game simply too epic to be played on the small screen.

Best Android tablet app for travel: Trip Advisor

Tablets are great tools for travelers. Smaller, lighter and less expensive than a laptop, a tablet can be one of the greatest travel companions you have. The bonus is that booking flights, creating itineraries or generally organizing your trip can be just as simple with a tablet as it can be with a laptop.

Before you even get started though, Trip Advisor is one app all globetrotters should have installed from the minute they step foot in the airport.

Best Android tablet app for watching movies: VLC

Watching movies is probably the single biggest reason most people buy a tablet. There’s no better way to pass a boring flight, train trip, or a lazy Sunday afternoon. But you need a solid movie player that’s up to the task, and they don’t come any more solid than VLC

The PC user’s video player of choice, VLC, has been on Android for nearly two years. VLC is fantastic for playing back video in just about any format.

Best Android tablet app for reading: Amazon Kindle

One of a tablet’s biggest advantages over a smartphone is that you can spend hours reading on it without getting eye-strain. If you’ve got an endless library of classic ebooks clogging up your computer or gathering dust on your Kindle, then why not pop them on your new tablet so they’re always with you?

They hardly take up any space either – that ‘1001 books you must read before you die’ list is going to need less memory than a Lady Gaga album.

Any great apps or games missing from our lists? Tell us about them in the comments.

Zinio SUCKS for Android tablets. It’s laggy, and it’s layout is not tablet friendly, compared to iPad version. They show your magazines in a LIST on a HUGE screen, where they should show as a GRID, just like on iPads. This will make the screen filled much more beautifully with contents, and it will actually look like tablet optimized. But they just did half-ass job, and say they optimized for tablets. Unfortunately, this is what many big companies do for Android tablet apps though. I really hope they step up their game.

Sheppard Software: Fun free online learning games and activities for kids

    #

I stumbled upon your fun interactive geography games from a link on the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance Website. Since then, your games have become quite a hit with my competitive colleagues!
–Candice Gomes, Education Outreach Coordinator, Boston Public Library (Sheppard Software’s geography games were featured in the Boston Public Library’s 2006 Exhibition on Mapping)

Terrific online educational games, especially geography.
    –Dallas Children’s Museum

First, let me say I love your website! I have students with learning disabilities that need multiple way to learn math, and your site fills the bill! – Darrin, Rose Park Elementary in Billings, MT
Awesome site. it is the only reason I am passing my World Geography class! –Stephen
Our preschool teacher just sent us homework with this new website on it! My twins love it – they are 4 1/2 and can’t get enough! The sounds, the action, so many choices and things to do. I bookmarked this for them and have sent the website to numerous friends and best of all it’s FREE!
Thank you for such a wonderful learning tool. — -Cherie Ventola

Let me say that you guys have an awesome website. I stumbled across your site one day, and it has been the easiest, most effective, and really the most fun method for learning geography that I’ve found. –David Weaver

I am thrilled to have stumbled upon your site! As a homeschooling mom, I love to find sites that encourage brain activity and reinforce the facts I teach during learning time!
The range of information is wonderful. Keep up the fantastic work!
    -Mrs. JaNell Hancock

    Your games are AMAZING!

Your website has SO much to offer!

This site is exactly what I have been looking for! I have four children within five years of age and they can all play your games! I love that you can choose your level of difficulty. The games are colorful and simple, not cluttered like some. The instructions are easy to understand and they cover basic learning that can be neglected with other “too busy” games. I can’t believe what a blessing it is to have stumbled upon this site! I looked up “kindergarten math games online.” This is the first one that I actually enjoyed navigating around in and that actually kept the kids’ attention without discouraging them.

This site will be a daily part of our learning! The kids were fighting over who could take the next turn at the learning game! It is reinforcing everything I am trying to teach.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

    Travel Tickets

    Or, How to avoid,

    “Are We There Yet?”

    by Laurel Smith, Momsminivan.com

Use some colored construction paper to cut out some “tickets” for your trip. Give your child a pre-counted baggie full of tickets. Every half hour (or every 30 miles) they can turn in one ticket to you. When their tickets are gone, the trip has ended! This really helps young children get an idea of how much time is left on the journey. Make sure you give them a couple of extra tickets in case you mis-calculate your journey, or if you have unexpected delays.

If you’re not up for creating your own tickets, here is a pre-made sheet of travel tickets created by Momsminivan that you can print! Just click the images below to open the printable pages.

    Click the picture above to

print a full size color image

(Or, use colored paper to save ink and print this image in black white )

In addition to Travel Tickets, you might also like to print some Reward Tickets. Give your child tickets to use on the trip if they have had good backseat behavior. They can turn them in to you at a gas stops or rest stops for some wacky flavored gum or other road trip treat – but only if they have earned the right to use it!

Here is a printable page with enough tickets for your whole family:

    Click the picture above to

print a full size color image

(Or, use colored paper and print this image in black white )

Here’s how one parent used Travel Tickets as a on a recent trip: “I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you. We just went on a trip with our sons age 5 and 7. We had 15 hours of driving to do in 2 days to get to our destination. We don’t have a DVD player in the car. Your travel tickets made all the difference it made the trip manageable. It became a series of 30 minutes, instead of never ending hours and hours.

Instead of giving them the tickets to start with, I gave them one ticket every 30 minutes. They kept the tickets and had a choice to exchange them when they were ready.

    • 2 tickets could be exchanged for a book ( a got a bunch of second hand ones at a thrift store)
    • 3 tickets could be exchanged for a wrapped up present ( dollar store toys and crafts)
    • 4 tickets could be exchanged for 30 minutes of playtime on a nintendo DS

So, something was always happening! They never asked when we getting there, they just asked when the next ticket time was and that was never very far. Really, it made a huge difference, 30 minutes is not a long time, it’s manageable.

I also held a few sales where I sold for example 20 minutes of DS time and a book for 4 tickets etc..

Thank you very much, you made our trip much more pleasant. We really appreciate it! “ ( –Thank you to Reader Josee for sharing her experience with us!)

Travel games for kids: fun for long waits and quiet places

by Lonely Planet Sep 04 2012

Kids don’t believe everything comes to those who wait, so it helps to have some travel games at the ready to make waits pass more smoothly. Longer travel games come in handy in restaurants, queues and at public transport lines, because they distract kids from the time it’s taking for something to happen.

Sometimes you might just want your little treasures to keep quiet. Quiet games can teach children that loud behaviour is not always okay, as well as buy a few moments of peace in a hectic day. Although many museums are becoming more interactive there are still many old-style museums that will have a ‘look, don’t touch’ feel that frustrates kids. With a bit of preparation, these games can get children to appreciate looking in a museum as much as you will.

Here are some great games to keep the kids engaged and entertained when they have to put up with long waits or quiet places:

    Games for waiting

    • Storylines

A good game for the whole family that is limited only by imagination. Start a story with a sentence (‘Once upon a time…’ might be a good place to start) with the next family member adding the next sentence. Add one that doesn’t make sense or finish your sentence with a cliff-hanger to keep it interesting.

  • Alphabet games
Alphabet games can run for hours if need be, so they’re perfect for undetermined waits. Name a category, then run through the alphabet naming something from each category. Animals (‘Aardvark, bumble bee, cat’) are easier, but harder topics can be famous people or song titles. Double points for double letters, like bumble bee. In other alphabet games, you can choose a category and all the players have to name something beginning with that letter before moving on to the next letter (eg ‘Apple’, ‘Asparagus’, ‘Artichoke’). For older kids make up a structure, such as ‘My name is blank from blank where they make the best blank’ filling in each of the blanks with a name, a location and an object starting with each letter of the alphabet.
  • Guessing games

Guessing games can be good for shorter waits, as kids can get frustrated or bored. Most guessing games are based on simple yes or no questions, using general questions (‘Is it alive?) to narrow it down to specific guesses (‘Is it a rabbit?’). In ‘guess the food’, one player will nominate a describing word (‘crunchy’, ‘sweet’ or ‘red’) with other players asking questions to guess the food. Use other categories like animals or famous people. You can prepare some cards with categories or names on them. Keep the games located in your travels, using famous people or animals from the country you’re visiting.

  • Games for quiet places

    • Guess the letter

Another one for readers. Draw a letter on the palm of another player with their eyes closed. Try whole words if guessing a letter is too easy.

  • Whispers
Pass a whispered message from one player to the next saying the message only once. As players pass it on from one to the next the message will become garbled. In a reasonably sized group (usually more than five people), the message should end up as nonsense when the last player says it out loud to the group.
  • Did you see?
A game that might involve a bit of preparation. Make a list of things to see in a gallery or museum by asking the kids what they think they’ll see or prepare a list beforehand based on an LP guidebook. Kids can check off their list with a prize or treat for the most complete list. Remember to have a range of items that are both common (so kids achieve something easily) and rare (to challenge them). You can debrief and talk about items on the list. More complex versions of the game might involve getting more than one of each item (eg seven paintings with a blonde man in them).
  • How many…
Guess how many of an object you’ll see on your museum visit and get the littlies to count them up as they go. Good objects include sculptures, gold frames or security guards.
  • What was it?

A simple game that will get kids looking at exhibits or paintings. Give the kids a minute or two to look at an exhibit, then ask them ‘What was it?’, ‘Who used it?’, ‘When did they use it?’ or if it’s a portrait ask ‘Who was it?’, ‘What did they do?’. Ask any other questions to stimulate the imagination. Be prepared to answer some tricky questions yourself.

Great Family Travel Games for Kids

By Katherine Lee. School-Age Children Expert

Katherine Lee is a former editor at Parenting and Working Mother magazines, and the mother of a 12-year-old son. She has written and edited numerous articles and essays on parenting and children’s health and development for What to Expect, Parenting, Working Mother, Wondertime, Ladies’ Home Journal. EverydayHealth.com, Sprig.com and About.com. Katherine is a regular contributor to BlogTalkRadio’s Parenting RoundAbout. a weekly podcast featuring About.com parenting experts talking about news and information relevant to parents today.

Here are some ideas for great travel games for kids to try on your next family trip.

    1. Last Letter, First Letter

Word games can be particularly useful — not to mention fun — for kids who tend to get sick while focusing on something like a book or a DVD. Any family travel game that involves looking out the window can help prevent car sickness. My family loves to play a game we invented called last letter, first letter.

Then the next player has to name an animal that starts with the last letter of the animal that was just named (say, antelope), and so on. When someone gets stuck, that person gets a strike. When any player gets three strikes, they are out. The winner is the person who is still remaining after everyone else is out. Tip: Parents may want to help younger grade-schoolers. A 5-year-old probably won’t be able to keep up with an older sibling or adults in the car, so adult help is always a good idea. Older kids with bigger vocabularies will be able to throw more difficult words into the mix.

    2. I Spy

An oldie but a goodie. Kids will love taking turns guessing and spying when playing this travel game.

To play: One player starts by describing something he or she spies, usually outside the car. The spied object can be described using letters, as in I spy with my little eye something that begins with the letter c. Then each player takes turns taking guesses such as cow, cornfield, and so on, until someone correctly guesses the answer, such as cloud. Another variation of the game is to describe the spied object with a color, such as I spy with my little eye something white to describe the cloud.

    3. Twenty Questions

This is another classic car or travel game that is great to play with kids.

To play: One player picks an object (players can decide beforehand whether or not to narrow down the choices by having the questions answerer state the category of the answer. So, for example, the answerer can say, I m thinking of a place (you can decide that your categories are occupations, places, animals, etc.). Then the other players each take turns asking questions that may help narrow down the possibilities, such as Is it bigger than a breadbox? or Is it edible?

    4. Travel Chess, Checkers, Board Games

Another excellent way to have fun on the road is by playing a travel game version of a favorite family board game such as Scrabble or Yahtzee. Get one of these top travel games for families or a travel game size chess, checkers, and backgammon set, and your family is sure to look forward to the trip as much as they are to getting to where you’re going.

    5. Math Games for the Road

From spotting numbers to estimating the cost of meals to calculating how much change you should receive when purchasing something, a family trip can be the perfect opportunity for grade-school age children to try out some math skills with some road trip math games .

    6. Travel Game Print Outs

Finally, check out these kids travel games to print out compiled by About.com s Family Vacations Expert. Her suggestions for these games, which are a great alternative to handheld video games, DVDs and other electronic entertainment, are a fantastic idea. And travel game printouts of games such as tic-tac-toe, connect the dots, and word puzzles can also challenge kids’ minds as they have fun.

    7. A Kids CD or an Audiobook

While kids CDs and DVDs aren t technically travel games for kids, they can be invaluable for some zone-out entertainment in between fun travel games for kids. If you re traveling by car and have a built-in DVD player, that can be an excellent way to pass some time as long as your kids don t get carsick from focusing on the screen while the car is moving.

If your family travel plans are to go by airplane or train, a laptop that plays movies can be a very handy thing. (And as parents know, iPods can be a lifesaver when it comes to entertaining kids; but the small screen might not be great for viewing a full-length movie, especially if more than one child is crowding around it.)

You can also bring CDs of excellent children s music or books or download them onto your iPod. For music, try these great kids CDs that grownups will also enjoy. And for audio books, try these top 6 ones to enjoy at home and on vacation. compiled by Elizabeth Kennedy, About.com s Children s Books Expert.

    10 Best Car Games for Kids #travel #to #vietnam

Banish backseat boredom without spending a dime By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

    Road Trips

Keep kids entertained with toys, games, and apps. (Flickr: jencu)

What do parents dread most about family road trips .

    1. I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

    2. Road Trip Bingo . This fun game combines bingo with a scavenger hunt.

    One for Each Letter

First pick a category: food, body parts, things you wear, car models, girl’s names, boy’s names, etc. Then everyone takes turns thinking of items in the category, in order of the alphabet. For instance, if the category was food, the first person could say “apple,” the second person could say “bread,” the third person could say “cheese,” etc. Keep going until someone can’t think of an answer that starts with their letter, then go on to a new category. Another version of this game is to name a category and have everyone say an item that starts with “a.” Take turns naming items that start with “a” until someone can’t think of any more. Then move on to the letter “b.”

Everyone helps create a story that goes back and forth from “good news” to “bad news.” For example, the first person starts out by saying “There once was a girl who lived in a beautiful castle….” The next person continues: “Unfortunately—the castle was attacked by a fire-breathing dragon….” Then the next person says “Fortunately, a huge thunderstorm started, putting out the dragon’s fire….” The story continues, going back and forth between fortunate and unfortunate things.

She has written and edited numerous articles and essays on parenting and children’s health and development for What to Expect, Parenting, Working Mother, Wondertime, Ladies’ Home Journal.

Banish backseat boredom without spending a dime By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

    Road Trips

Keep kids entertained with toys, games, and apps. (Flickr: jencu)

What do parents dread most about family road trips .
