How to Find a Water Leak

Our highly trained engineers at L.D.S. Leak Detection Specialists Ltd. will choose the approriate testing and inspection process specifically chosen to suit your home or commercial business to find the leak.

Our engineers at L.D.S. carry all the latest technology in leakage detection. We have listed the main Leak detection methods and equipment below. Inspection cameras. Protimeter mms damp meter survey kits, pressure gauges both hydraulic and digital and salts diagnostic kits also form part of the L.D.S. engineers equipment.

Leak Detection Methods to Find A Leak

Acoustics
Acoustic profiling uses ground and pipe sensitive microphones to enhance the sound of the leak. This method can help in pinpointing precise leak location.

Correlation
Is a way of finding and pinpointing leaks in water pipes. A leak in a pipe under pressure creates noise that travels through the pipe walls, the surrounding ground and along the contents of the pipe. Correlators are a very accurate sound testing device which are used to identify the acoustic frequency caused when a pipe is leaking. The correlator uses two identical sensors located along the pipe to calculate the leek location by logging the signal delay, sensor distance and the sound velocity.

Tracer Gas
The trace gas, a safe mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, is introduced into the pipe with the suspected leak. The gas, is the lightest in the atmosphere and is made up of of small molecules. The gas will exit at the leak and make its way to the surface where it is detected using gas sensitive detection pobes.

Thermal Imaging
Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermography cameras can identify problem areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye, detecting hidden water leaks. The infrared inspection camera can detect not only hidden water leaks and their origin, but also moisture that cannot be physically reached with moisture meters. Read more

Pipe, Cable and Metal Detection and Tracing
Often the exact position of pipes and cables is unknown due to innacurate or non existant network plans. In order to carry out precise water leak detection and to avoid damage to utilities and operators during excavations, it is essential to know the precise position of all services. We use high performance equipment which can locate and trace buried pipes and cables.

Network Monitoring with Noise Loggers
Noise Loggers are used for early detection of leaks in water supply networks. The longer it takes to identify that a network is leaking the more revenue is lost and the greater the loss of precious water resources. In addition to the more conventional methods of leak detection the installation of permanent noise loggers has proved to be a cost effective tool in early identification of water loss. By permanently monitoring sections of the system, which have previously been proven leak free, it will alert you when a potential leak does develop. Read more .

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs

Spring and summer travel could become just a dream for many travelers as gas prices affect airfare. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON , D.C. (CBSDC)   For many Americans, the lamentation of rising gas costs is nothing new. It’s an everyday reality to see prices at the pump going up.

But now, those looking to get away from it all may encounter further troubles doing so, thanks to gas price hikes that have the potential to curb holiday travel and drive up the cost of plane tickets.

Travel buffs are just beginning to solidify their spring break and summer vacation plans. As they do, comparison shopping may show that such hikes have already started to take their toll on the cost of airfare.

[R]ising jet fuel costs put significant cost pressure on the airline industry, Steve Lott, vice present of communications for Airlines for America told CBSDC. Regarding fuel, it was the airline industry’s largest expense in 2011, representing 35 percent of total costs. In 2011, the price of jet fuel reached a record high of $3.00 per gallon for the year.

He continued, It is even higher for the first two months of 2012.

Cynthia Brough, director of public relations for AAA, said that as jet fuel costs go up in tandem with gas prices, the consumer could expect to pay more for their flight.

As with any business, if [an airline] pays more for fuel and operational costs, they need to pass that cost on to the consumer, she told CBSDC. There have been [similar] effects in the past.

Though the illegality of price signaling prevents airlines from discussing numbers, Allison Steinberg, senior media analyst for JetBlue Airways, told CBSDC that there are steps taken to try to stave off the potential effects of rising gas prices.

We continue to believe the best tools for managing the impact of fuel expense are operating a fuel-efficient fleet and using efficient operating procedures, such as single engine taxi, she said in an email. In addition, we continue to manage our fuel hedge portfolio as a form of insurance to help mitigate price volatility and protect JetBlue against severe spikes in oil prices.

It may take more extreme measures for airlines to keep up, though. Lott added that, from the year 2000 to the middle of 2011, jet fuel prices rose 268 percent. In that same time period, domestic airfare costs reportedly rose 10 percent.

Fares over the past decade have not kept pace with costs or the price of fuel, he noted.

According to information provided by the AAA National Office to CBSDC, some airlines have already taken such action, replacing larger jets with smaller, regional aircrafts that are more fuel-efficient in nature.

Travel website Expedia.com confirmed that prices have gone up for flights in recent history. However, they additionally stated that ticket sales have increased as well.

Despite the recent rise in gas prices, Expedia sees people still taking to the skies, Jeremy Boore, travel analyst for Expedia.com, said to CBSDC. With regards to flights, on some of the most popular routes, Expedia sees ticket growth outpacing average ticket price growth.

According to their collected data, tickets between Los Angeles International and John F. Kennedy International Airports in the past 28 days have gone up in price by 1.7%, with sales up 14.1% in comparison with the previous 28-day period.

Other popular routes saw similar rises in both cost and consumption.

[T]here is still demand for travel, all things considered, Boore added.

All the same, consumer surveys and data collected last year indicate that some travelers did make the decision to avoid air travel, instead opting to go by car.

American drivers will still have to pay more to vacation, however, statistics offered by the U.S. Energy Information Administration show that, for the week starting Feb. 27, gasoline prices per gallon averaged out at $3.71.

That amount reflects a rise of 13 cents from the previous week, and 33 cents from the same week in 2011.

The past month has also been statistically more expensive at the pump than last February, according to numbers collected by AAA. The data collected and presented by their Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows that on March 1, 2012, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.74. The same time last year, Americans paid just $3.39 per gallon.

The increase in cost can be attributed to a number of things, including dwindling supplies and increasing demand as summer ticks closer and the politics surrounding crude oil acquisition, especially in the Middle East.

Avery Ash, manager of regulatory affairs for AAA, said that gas prices do tend to rise slightly as March begins and winter draws to a close. But the rise seen recently is atypical in size, due to geopolitical influences.

Last year we saw escalating tensions in Libya and northern Africa, and that uncertainty impacted the market most specifically, the removal of Libyan crude from the market, he told CBSDC, adding that this year s recent tensions in Iran have taken their toll as well. This time of year we do see some upward movement, but the last two years have broken the historical norm in the magnitude of the increases.

A combination of pent-up vacation desires and years of experience with balancing personal budgets has helped American travelers enjoy some time away all the same, even if they had to change their approach.

[Travelers] did … budget more wisely, by perhaps visiting national parks for free as opposed to another venue of higher cost, Brough said. They changed the type of travel, but they still traveled.

But as Nancy White, who also directs AAA public relations, observed in their end-of-year holiday travel forecasts from 2011, many Americans will prioritize travel over other expenses, especially if family and friends are involved in the trip.

The heartstrings outweigh the purse strings, she said, quoting a colleague. People will do whatever they need to do to spend time with loved ones, making cuts in other areas of spending to accommodate travel plans.

How much do you spend on car insurance and gas per

#

First separate the two numbers. Gas is gas, and insurance is insurance. One can be thought of as overhead (fixed-cost), and the other is an operating expense.

Your insurance is fixed, in that it costs you whether you drive or not, but the rate will be highly variable depending on your ZIP code, your credit report, the liability rankings of that vehicle, cost of repair parts, the coverage limits and deductibles you choose, and you. Did you just get your license yesterday, or have you been driving for a number of years? Have you carried car insurance in the past? If so, they’ll want a good explanation for the gap in coverage, and the only good one in their eyes is if you did not own a car.

As far as liability goes, it’s just numbers. If Nissan 350Z owners are involved in more accidents than Toyota Camry owners, they will charge more to insure the 350Z for liability.

For collision repair coverage, if parts are more expensive for one car (say, a new BMW with a lot of aluminum body panels) vs. another (say, a Honda Accord with all steel panels, and plentiful availability of factory, used, and 3rd party parts), the car that costs more to repair will get charged more to insure.

Your ZIP code also matters. In my area, someone who lives in congested downtown or the neighborhoods immediately next to downtown will pay more than someone who lives 5 miles away (and the person living five miles away pays more than the person living in a rural area).

All of the insurance companies look at a combination of factors, and usually come to different conclusions about what to charge you. It absolutely, no ifs, ands, or buts, pays to shop around.

Another fixed cost to plan for is yearly registration. That varies by state, and in many (most?) states, it varies by car, with more expensive, newer cars costing more per year. In those states, the cost drops each year, until it hits a minimum after about 8-12 years. In my state, the minimum is about $40. The maximum is many hundreds, if not over a grand, but for cars most people can afford, it’s like $300-350 when it’s brand new, and it goes down every year after that.

Now your gasoline is an operating expense. It varies according to usage. The best way to predict that cost is with a calculator, plugging in cost per gallon, miles per gallon, and miles driven.

You also have to add in scheduled maintenance (fluid and filter changes, tune-ups, etc.), tires, brakes, probable suspension work, and other repairs as the machine ages and wears.

So, I don’t know–start shopping for insurance (or rather, shop for an agent who seems interested in earning your business once you do buy) on some examples of cars you might buy (and maybe a vanilla car like a Taurus or Camry for comparison), and grab a calculator and run some fuel costs. Call the dealer service departments to get an idea of expected maintenance costs, and check out Tire Rack and Discount Tire’s sites for an idea of what tires will cost for the cars you’re considering.

Run all your numbers before you decide to take that plunge. (You might also decide that a non-sports car is much more practical at whatever point in your life you are–because they are less expensive to own.)

Edit: I see you’re looking at a Mercedes SLK. I honestly don’t think $300 is going to be nearly enough for gas and insurance, let alone everything else, unless you barely ever drive it, and insurance is close to a best case scenario.

I forgot to mention that the major insurer’s websites like Progressive.com let you run a quote online (or at least they used to), so run a few of those at the different websites to get a better idea for yourself.

My fiancee and I are both 25, both have not-at-fault accidents on our record and pretty miserable credit. We have a 2000 Saab 9-3 convertible and a 2000 Jeep Cherokee.

We pay $80 per month for both, though the majority is for the Jeep, which is liability-only. Liability plus comprehensive with a $250 deductible is less than half of the cost due to the Jeep being a larger vehicle.

As for gas. well. a Jeep and a turbocharged car driven by a guy with a lead foot. I don’t even keep track anymore for my own sanity.
