Google Flights offers 6 new ways to score cheap airline tickets

Google has introduced a new search tool that makes finding the best airfare deal significantly easier. If you have your destination ready and your travel dates are flexible, your chances of snagging the lowest price goes up. That s because Google Flights will present a calendar of the dates with the cheapest prices for your travel.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Google has introduced a new search tool that makes finding the best airfare deal significantly easier.

Lowest prices by time of year

If you have your destination ready and your travel dates are flexible, your chances of snagging the lowest price goes up. That s because Google Flights will present a calendar of the dates with the cheapest prices for your travel.

The prices that Google shows will appear in gray and green (green for lowest).

When you click on the day you want to travel, Google will list the flights for that date in order of cost, grouping together all the times when you can fly at the lowest price.

Chart tools created to monitor yearly trends

If you re curious about what time of the year flights between two cities are the lowest, Google Flights can show you a bar chart that will give you a glimpse of the best prices throughout the year.

Google Maps with flight prices

Maybe you know when you want to fly, but you re not sure where to go? Google Flights has an interactive map that will show you prices for destinations around the world.

I m feeling lucky

You can also search for generic terms, such as flights to Europe or flights to Mexico. Google Flights also has an I m feeling lucky button that will suggest popular destinations and other locations based on your search history.

Don t know where to go?

Google said it found that 54% of people don t know where they want to travel when they decide to plan their vacations.

What Google doesn t show is whether prices will drop in the near future. Microsoft Bing and Kayak provide services that predict when prices are expected to rise or fall.

But Google said those tools aren t typically very helpful.

Don t know when to go?

Though it s sometimes hard to pull the trigger because you re afraid the price will drop tomorrow (or next Tuesday, maybe?), our experience shows it s usually best to book right away, said Eric Zimmerman, Google Flights product manager, in a blog post.

A nifty trick is to save your flight booking on Google Flights and use the Google Now app to receive updates if the price drops substantially.  Although there are not guarantees when it comes to the price of airfare, if you re unsure that s a great way to be able to jump on the discount, if it happens.

In 2011, Google purchased a company called ITA, which provides flight information to websites, such as Expedia, Kayak, Hipmunk and Priceline. The data Google controls includes flight times, availability and prices.

Competitors Kayak and Expedia initially opposed the deal before the Department of Justice forced Google to promise that it would continue to promote competition.

Free URL submission to Yahoo, Google, MSN and Ask, google submit

#

Home Webmasters Free Submit URL

Not really. As long as an indexed web page links to your site, all the major engines will find you and index you. Use these forms for peace of mind, or for when you are unsure that the search engines like the sites that currently link to yours. Many more places to submit are at the Web Site Submission Base

The quickest way to be indexed is to have another site link to yours, preferably one that is updated regularly has a good Page Rank.

OR by using Google’s free SiteMaps service (some free tools for it are here)

Use this form to submit to Google for free , and appear in the search results of AOL as well:

  • Only the top-level page from a site is necessary; you do not need to submit each individual page. Their crawler, Googlebot, will be able to find the rest
  • Use this tool to see where you are ranked on Google, and how many backlinks you have

To see any page’s PageRank, you can either install the Google Toolbar, or if the site is listed at Open Directory, use this tool

PageRank is just one factor of many that needs to be looked at when optimizing a site for Google. PageRank is Google’s method of measuring a page’s importance. When all other factors, such as the Title tag and keywords, are taken into account, Google uses PageRank to adjust results so sites that are more important will move up in the results page of a user’s search

Google looks at which pages link to each other to determine this importance. If Page A links to Page B, then Page A is saying that Page B is an important page.

  • PageRank only looks at the voting ability of incoming links to a page, and how much they recommend that page.
  • Every page of a site can have a PageRank, not just the main page
  • You can pass PageRank to different pages of your own site through the internal linking structure of the various pages
  • Naming and titling hyperlinks using keyphrases is a separate thing from PageRank. Using keyphrases within your links may help with your search engine rankings, but not your PageRank.

In other words, for PageRank purposes, it’s better to have a page with only a few links on it pointing to your site, than a page with tons of links on it pointing to your site. If a page has a PageRank of seven (out of ten), and it’s filled with many links to other sites, those other sites only get a tiny portion of that seven PR because the PageRank gets divided amongst all the links. So in effect, just because a page has a high PageRank, it doesn’t mean it’s the best one to be linked from.

Yahoo

The quickest way is to get indexed is to have a blog as part of your site, with an RSS feed that is correctly XML formatted. Then geta Yahoo account (just get a free email account), then add it to your My Yahoo page, and your site will start to be indexed almost straight away.

To submit your site for free, use this form:

  • Use this form to also appear at engines Yahoo bought – AltaVista and AlltheWeb.
  • Check out all the different Yahoo submissions, like media paid submission
  • You can also submit to the Inktomi spider, which might help with Yahoo inclusion

NOTE: You must be a registered Yahoo! user before you can use the above form. Their email service is good and free (my email provider of choice), so you might as well.

Google gaggle

In the 2013 comedy “The Internship,” actors Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play laid off 40-something watch salesmen who land internships at Google, competing against scores of tech-savvy younger interns for a coveted job at the Internet giant.

The two actors perhaps could have gotten a leg up by enrolling in Carolina’s minor in entrepreneurship or “e-minor” program, based in the department of economics in UNC s College of Arts and Sciences.

At the tech behemoth, six standout young UNC alumnae are doing everything from writing code, making YouTube music better and promoting STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — careers to using their tech skills to promote causes and sports. They all credit the e-minor program for much of their success.

These “Googlers,” as employees are known, work at a sometimes controversial $50 billion company that’s shaping today and tomorrow.

Two got their start as Google interns. The e-minor program consists of classes and an internship, and it provides real-world lessons from successful entrepreneurs. Nearly 1,000 students have enrolled in the e-minor since it launched in 2005.

Awesome things every day

Raleigh native Abby Bouchon ’13, a biology major, joined Google in a role that makes the most of her keen science aptitude and desire to be part of the next big thing. She says she hopes to help create a community for women in science and technology “to continue to do awesome things every day.”

Bouchon works in Google’s New York office to amplify programming for major science organizations such as NASA, code.org and National Geographic.

She recently demonstrated her passion for beekeeping in a video highlighting how Google Glass, a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display, could be used to teach beekeeping. The video was shot in a most unlikely place — atop New York’s landmark Waldorf Astoria hotel on Park Avenue. The segment was then shared with over 800 members of the Google+ Beekeeping Community.

Bouchon calls the opportunity to work at Google “a once in a lifetime experience. UNC and the entrepreneurship minor taught me that if you stick with your passions and are true to yourself, you can shoot for the stars.”

For Meghan Lyons ’13, a former UNC field hockey player from Wilmington, Del. the journey to Google has reconnected her to her alma mater. She’s pursuing her passion for sports and social platforms as a marketing associate in Google+’s community partnerships in sports in New York.

While at Carolina, Meghan served a wide variety of organizations, including the Carolina Athletics Strategic Plan Advisory Board and two terms as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council. Her passion for connecting athletes to community causes made her a natural fit for Google.

In January, Lyons interviewed tech-savvy, former Tar Heel basketball star Harrison Barnes, a forward with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, for a Google+ Hangout piece.

Most recently, she worked with Denver Bronco Terrance “Pot Roast” Knighton to take Broncos fans to Super Bowl XLVIII with the team through Google Glass.

Lyons said the e-minor introduced her to some of the most creative minds at Carolina — and, in turn, some of her greatest friends.

“It’s neat to see my fellow UNC grads doing well. The projects that many of us worked on together at Carolina provided a great launching pad,” she said.

‘A tribute to great students’

Google, which was founded in 1998 as a search engine provider, has long since become more. The burgeoning company now owns YouTube and the Android operating system.

Getting an internship at Google isn’t easy — the company reportedly gets 40,000 applications for 1,500 slots each year. Interns are called Nooglers, short for new Googlers.

Snagging a regular job also is tough. In the past year, the company received nearly 1.3 million applications for 15,317 openings — or nearly 85 for each opening, according to Great Rated. a job-seeker web site produced by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco.

UNC’s e-minor program is unique because it’s targeted to students in the arts and sciences. Students may choose one of five tracks to focus on: commercial, social, scientific, sports and artistic.

Buck Goldstein, University Entrepreneur in Residence, says the women’s diverse roles at Google are “a tribute to great students,” but noted that all had assembled impressive resumes while undergraduates by taking part in programs, conferences or initiatives that made them attractive to Google.

How to use Google 2-step verification

Beef up your Google account’s security by adding 2-step verification. Here’s our guide.

It pays to be as security-conscious as possible with online accounts. Here we show you how to get started with new Google safety measures to protect your email and documents.

Millions of people have a Google account and this makes them a prime target for criminals hoping to sell your valuable personal information. It’s crucial that you have a strong password, and not one that’s easily guessed. Ideally, your password should contain a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and punctuation.

Passwords can still be broken with the right tools, though. Google is well aware of the threat and has introduced a second layer of security called 2-step verification. After enabling this extra security, you’ll need both your password and a unique code to log into your account. This code is sent to you in a text message or voicemail something that the hackers are extremely unlikely to be able to access. Read next. How to make Android look like a PC .

Updated 23 June 2016 with general updates.

Enabling 2-step verification

To enable 2-step verification, sign in to your Google account from the usual web page it doesn’t matter which service you’re using as Gmail. Google Docs and YouTube all link to one account. At the top left-hand corner, enter your username and password and then click on My Account, which can be found in the menu that appears when you click on your name.

On the left-hand side, within the Sign-in Security section you’ll be able to click on the right arrow, that will lead you into a separate section, where you’ll see the Signing in to Google option. If you scroll down, you’ll be able to see 2-step verification, with it being Off by default.

Click Get Started to enable it; you may be asked to re-enter your password. Select the country in which your phone is registered and the number itself. Next, choose whether you want to receive the codes via text or voice message you can change this option later.

It’s best to enter a mobile phone number rather than a landline or Skype number. Under no circumstances enter a GoogleTalk number as you’ll end up locking yourself out of your account as the code will be sent to Google Voice which is only accessible after you’ve logged in.

Click the Try button and you should receive the code on your phone almost instantly. Enter this in the box and click Next. Finally, click Turn on 2-step verification and you’ll be taken back to the Account Settings page.

You won’t be asked for a verification code for the next 30 days unless you log into your Google account on another computer or device. Remember that you may be asked to enter a verification code for each Google site you use. Only tick the Remember this computer for 30 days’ box if you have sole use of the computer or trust the other people who use it.

Smartphones

If you have a compatible smartphone, you can install Google’s Authenticator app. This generates codes so you don’t need a phone signal or data plan to receive a text or voice message. The app is available on Apple’s App Store and the Android Market. BlackBerry users should go to Google’s Mobile website to download and install the application.

Bear in mind that you’ll still need to enrol your phone number as part of enabling 2-step verification to use Authenticator. Don’t forget to click on the relevant link on the settings page for your specific device type follow the instructions to link your handset to your Google account. You can also scan a QR code to authenticate the device.

Once this process is complete, you can use your phone to quickly get a code whenever you’re asked as you sign into your Google account.

Google is trying to make it easier to authorise logins with a single option, over a PIN to key-in. This update is slowly rolling out to all users.

Application-specific passwords

Not all Google services use verification codes, so you’ll need what Google calls application-specific passwords to log into certain ones. For example, Google Calendar, GoogleTalk, Picasa (now discontinued) and Sync all require a special password in addition to your normal password. These services will provide a link to generate an application-specific password, or you can browse directly to the Authorising applications sites’ page which is in the Security section of your Google account settings.

Simply enter the name of the application and click the Generate password button and copy the text that appears and paste it into the box of the application asking for it. It doesn’t matter about the spaces: these are ignored. You won’t have to memorise or write this password down as it can be used only once you’ll only need to generate a new one when you first use an application or site that you haven’t already signed into using 2-step verification. If you need to, you can revoke access to one of these applications by clicking the link next to the program in question in the list at the bottom of the page.

Occasionally, it won’t be obvious that you need an application-specific password. For example, if you try and configure Gmail on an iPhone it will appear as if your usual password is incorrect as you’ll be unable to log in. What you need to do is generate another application-specific password and type it in when you see the password incorrect’ message to verify your account on the device. This is because application-specific passwords replace traditional passwords rather than complementing them.

Extra precautions

Although 2-step verification makes your account almost impossible to hack, it can also prevent you from logging in if you lose your phone and can’t get codes. For this reason, you should enter a backup phone number on the settings page and also print some backup codes. You can carry the latter with you to ensure that you can always log in even if you can’t use your phone for any reason.

If you want to disable 2-step verification you can do so on the settings page. You’ll be asked to enter your usual Google password and possibly a verification code. Click Turn off 2-step verification and then confirm the action in the pop-up window that appears. Be sure to revoke all application-specific passwords as well to return to using standard passwords with other services that don’t use 2-step verification.

How to Add Google Remarketing Tag to a Shopify Store #google

How to Add a Standard Google Remarketing Tag to a Shopify Store

February 27, 2015 by Liz Grajeda 2 Comments

The Google Remarketing tag allows you to track and advertise directly to visitors of your website or mobile application. As most eCommerce professionals know, remarketing is a powerful way to increase top of mind awareness and conversion rates. In order for remarketing to work, there needs to be additional customized code added to your website, using either Google Tag Manager. enabling remarketing in Google Analytics, or by manually adding code before the closing body tag in your website s theme. Here is a quick how-to guide for adding Google s remarketing tag to a Shopify store.

Step 1: Enable Advertiser Features in Google Analytics

Sign into the Google Analytics account for your website and click on the Admin tab at the top. On the column labeled Property. click on the tab that says Property Settings. About half way down the page, you will see a section called Advertiser Features. set Enable Advertiser Features to ON.

Step 2: Create a campaign in Google Adwords

Log into Google Adwords and click on the red +Campaign button and select Display Network Only

Once here, select the Remarketing radio button and enter the campaign name, bid strategy, and budget. Then click Set Up Remarketing. Here you can choose to insert the code into your website or use your Google Analytics code. After testing both methods, we have found that inserting the code works better than using the Google Analytics code.

Step 3: Add the Google Remarketing Tag to your theme.liquid in Shopify

To insert the code, log into the back end of your Shopify store. Click theme, then customize theme. and then EDIT HTML/CSS. Click on theme.liquid and find where the /body tag is in the html. Click on the line directly above this, and insert the remarketing tag. You do not need to include the Google Remarketing Tag header, you can insert just the javascript code.

Your tag should look similar to this:

script type= text/javascript
/* ![CDATA[ */
var google_conversion_id = 000000000; This is your own auto-generated custom conversion ID
var google_custom_params = window.google_tag_params;
var google_remarketing_only = true;
/* ]] */
/script
script type= text/javascript src= //www.googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion.js
/script
noscript
div style= display:inline;
img height= 1 width= 1 style= border-style:none; alt= src= //googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/viewthroughconversion/000000000/?value=0 amp;guid=ON amp;script=0 /
/div
/noscript

An example of the tag inserted in the theme.liquid

After you have finished the above steps, check to make sure your code is implemented correctly with the Google Tag Assistant. Google investigation dropped by US regulators – BBC News #google #investigation

Google investigation dropped by US regulators

Image copyright Getty Images Image caption The FTC probe ended with Google changing the way it handled some search parameters

Google narrowly escaped being prosecuted by the US government in 2012, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Regulators at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had been investigating complaints from Google’s rivals about its dominance of the internet search industry.

An internal report obtained by the paper showed that some FTC officials had wanted to prosecute.

Instead, the regulator persuaded Google to change the way its software worked.

Google said the “exhaustive” review showed there was no harm to competitors or consumers.

The FTC began its probe of the search market in 2011 following complaints from Google’s competitors.

During the investigation the regulator’s officials gathered nine million documents and obtained evidence from firms such as Yelp, TripAdvisor and Amazon, who had accused Google of taking content from their web pages.

The information Google gleaned was allegedly used by the firm to improve its own search ranking system.

The evidence gathered was enough to convince some FTC investigators that legal action should be taken, said the paper.

However when the regulator’s investigation ended, the agency concluded that the company had not abused its market position to hurt rivals.

Even so, the FTC arranged a deal with the company to end some of the practices that its rivals had complained about.

The report was inadvertently sent to the Wall Street Journal when it asked for details of a separate FTC investigation.

The agency has not commented on the accidental release of the report.

In a statement Google said: “After an exhaustive 19-month review, covering nine million pages of documents and many hours of testimony, the FTC staff and all five commissioners agreed that there was no need to take action on how we rank and display search results.”

It added: “Speculation about potential consumer and competitor harm turned out to be entirely wrong.”

Introducing the largest travel metasearch engine in the world: Google

Jun 10.2013

Did you notice? Google recently indicated exactly what it is aiming to ultimately become in the travel industry.

Thanks to the new Google Maps Beta and its integration of Google Flights into the main Maps product, Google has signaled its aim to be the new owner of the #1 spot in the travel industry as the world s largest metasearch.

Heresy (or heresay), you might suggest? Well, let’s first do some calculations together.

Without even third-party API usage, Google totals roughly 170 million visits to its branded Maps web and mobile assets each month, with users on average racking up at least ten pages per visit.

This number doesn’t even include the myriad of API integrations and the massive potential for incremental growth via the recently announced Maps Engine API for the enterprise business.

So, let’s make some rough, but conservative assumptions to put this into perspective.

  • Each Google Maps mobile app visit represents one unique route query.
  • Each Google Maps web visit represents two unique route queries.
  • That averages out to around 1.6 unique route queries per visit.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Out of every route query performed via Google Maps, today there is no public data specifying how many of those involve an origin location and a destination location that are far enough apart for a flight to be a potential mode of transportation.

But for the sake of this analysis, let’s assume 5% of all nearly 300 million monthly route queries would have an air travel option available.

Almost instantly, simply by flipping the Google Flights switch, roughly 15 million new flight search queries would be performed and presented to travelers each month directly inside of Google Maps.

Does 15 million sound familiar? It happens to be roughly the average number of unique searches performed on some of the biggest online travel agency and travel information sites each month.

It’s not all the same or is it?

True, those OTAs are serving customers that have the clear intent to book travel, while Maps users may just be looking for directions to Grandma’s house.

However, let’s show a quick example of how easy the new Google maps might convert someone. Say you’re looking to drive from Denver to Salt Lake City:

Eight hours, not too bad. But wait. That grey line offers me another tempting option. Fly an hour and 15 minutes, and it’s only $138?

With today’s gas prices, I might be tempted. Let me take a closer look:

And:

Well, that’s pretty darn tempting. And look, not only are airlines represented well, I’m already being led into the hotel purchase funnel on the right.

And so it all starts coming together.

Over the past year, there’s been a ton of dialogue in the industry about the lack of traction for Google’s Flights product .

For all that time, it’s likely Google hasn’t cared one bit about the short-sightedness of that criticism, instead focusing on building the next-generation Maps product currently being rolled out by a very proud set of engineers and designers who have invested months and some years into its new, arguably flawless interface.

While we ve all been scurrying around debating cache speed versus inventory availability in flight search API-land, Google has been patiently investing in a bigger mission to turn Google Maps ( more than just a map , as its tagline reminds us) into an engine upon which it will usher in the true beginning to Google’s potentially devastating reign in travel.

Google isn t starting from scratch to build a new travel product like we ve all been so gullible to believe.

As has been pointed out, it knew better than any of us that the two most popular travel products in the world were already in their portfolio: Google Search + Google Maps (lest we forget about YouTube. the second most popular search engine around, also owned by Google).

It stands to reason that Google Maps just might be the best top of the funnel anyone could ever dream up.

Beyond its branded assets, the forthcoming update to the Maps API could be the inevitable catalyst for Google Flights data to also be integrated as a core part of the Google API platform.

Why wouldn t Google want to open up the ability for long-tail developers to build out their own map-based flights app? Or apps plural, as the case is likely to be with over one million sites integrating Google Maps API functionality and data already.

And even beyond the next API update?

Google (always) remains tight-lipped about the specifics, but during the Google I/O keynote a few noteworthy statements were reiterated.

The first was that Google Maps will now be more than just a map and a second statement shared a future vision for Maps in which each person has a personalized map unique to their preferences, data and is able to predict future needs.

It’s easy to imagine per the screen shots included above an even more personalized map experience as they referenced with the cross-app integrations they’ve rolled out over the last 12 months.

For example, Google Calendar could easily provide the unique intelligence necessary for the travel dates included in the Google Maps flight option to be intelligently auto-populated based on days most appealing to me in terms of my schedule compared to best fares available.

Even when predicting the total travel time for each travel mode in Google Maps, where I’m currently located or where I live can help give end-to-end time estimates.

Further, layering historical traffic data to help calculate drive-time to the airport plus curb-to-gate walking time thanks to Google Indoor Maps data could give travelers the power to make even more informed choices than ever before.

If you haven t taken the new beta for a spin, these bold visions for the future will start to feel a little more realistic when you do. And prepare to utter a “wow” or six to yourself while you explore what the new tool has to offer.

Both hated competitors and fanboys alike agree it’s incredible.

Tolling the bell

So, what comes next? Hopefully the industry waking up to the idea that Google Maps is the name it has included way too infrequently as a part of the discussions on Google Travel s master plan.

And if this assessment is even remotely accurate, we ve got the final nail in the coffin coming for a fair number of players in the lucrative world of online travel.

  • Multi-modal? We’ve already talked  about that one.
  • Flight search by amenities? I’d start looking at other ideas.
  • Flight search API-as-a-service? The Google Maps API may be your new worst enemy the day its next update is released.
  • Trip planning? You’re better off charging people $5 to watch the Hipmunk  mascot punch you in the face.
  • Hotel search? It s only just begun with hotels. And between places, neighborhoods and the rapidly growing indoor mapping capabilities, that’s not a segment I’d want to be in a losing battle with them over. Perhaps Priceline s Jeffery Boyd is right ?

Oh, and one more thing

The entire new Google Maps is fully integrated with, and conversely by Google Plus. Every single result it delivers will eventually have the potential to be influenced by your social graph and your individual tastes and preferences.

It won’t be long before your flight results are influenced by not only calendar and location data, but specifically this Google+ data including the notorious Circles which finally may crack the code of segmenting out your social graph into buckets that add relevance to both your leisure and business travel map-based shopping experiences.

In closing

Google Maps has, to date, not been great at pulling users into the various funnels it can power. This new release has the greatest potential of anything before it to change that.

At the end of the day, there are too many possible funnels for Google to own in travel to list them all in this one article, but suffice to say, with the new platform architecture finally coming into its own that they’ve been planning world dominance around for the better part of a decade, it’s time now more than ever to take notice.

We each have to look in the mirror and accept that for almost every one of us, in some small and some massive parts of our business, Google Maps and it s 20 billion annual page views are officially a much more terrifying and direct industry threat than we ever gave it credit for.

Whether we accept it or not, we are all a part of travel industry history in the making.

It’s time to stand clear of the tracks because Google Travel and its 20 billion-passenger train is finally approaching the station.

Effective social media analytics

Effective social media analytics

Monday 10 June 2013 12.09 BST First published on Monday 10 June 2013 12.09 BST

Six months ago, your company launched a new product. Last month, your sales dipped. Why? And how interested are people in your competitor’s new product? Don’t pay money for a focus group or a market survey that will deliver data three months from now. Listen to the social network instead. It’s 2013, and social business isn’t about collecting Facebook “likes” anymore. Welcome to the age of social media analytics.

Online social networks bleed information. Every time someone posts something on Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest, they create a digital footprint. Every time someone else reads it, or watches a YouTube video, they add to the data trail. Facebook is currently building a data centre in Sweden the size of 11 football fields, joining two others in America, just to collect and process the stuff. You can analyse it to make a variety of business decisions.

“In the past, if you offered a marketing director a box that she could put on her desk that would let her listen into all the conversations about her brand and her competitors’ brands, she’d have thought you so stark raving mad that she would have had security walk you off the premises,” says Philip Sheldrake, managing partner at Euler Partners, which advises companies on how to use social media properly. Now, it’s routine.

The information that you look for will depend on your business goals. Some companies use social media to push people through the sales funnel to a conversion. “If you’re selling autos, you might be tracking how many times you generate a test drive in a dealership [from a social media campaign],” says Jay Palter, a personal brand and content marketing strategist from Edmonton, Canada. Others concentrate on brand awareness, and don’t worry too much about who buys. Still others are particularly focused on brand trust, or increasing customer satisfaction, or perhaps they simply want to understand why customers do what they do. Non-profit organisations and governments may be more interested in simply getting a message out. All of these goals require different types of analysis.

A marketing officer might track customers and prospects on social media to see what key words they are discussing, and then fold those key words and concepts into status updates or tweets, to be more relevant to that audience. Perhaps she might monitor which messages attract the most readers to click on a link to her web site. She could then spend more money promoting that content on a social network to reach even more customers.

There are a variety of social media analytics tools to help marketing experts do all this. Some, such as HootSuite, span multiple channels, while others focus on particular networks such as Twitter. Some tools include workflow; they not only enable you to monitor the “buzz” around particular keywords, but also allow social media managers to connect information to others in the organisation. Tweets complaining about a particular product issue could be routed through to a customer service department, for example.

Customer feedback raises another issue: sentiment analysis. Some tools analyse what’s being said online to create an index of user sentiment about a topic. Sentiment140, for example, tries to mine opinion about particular products or brands.

But as Marshall Sponder, social media analytics expert and author of the book Social Media Analytics says, sentiment analysis is an inexact science. “The way that people speak isn’t uniform,” he says. Opinion mining can be a useful trend indicator, but it isn’t gospel.

The best analytics will put social media data in context, says Sponder. He defines context in various ways. Tweets sent from a smartphone often reveal a person’s location. Then, there’s customer history. “Most of the information comes from a customer’s journey; it’s behavioural based,” he adds.

Things can get really useful when marrying this data with other information in your organisation. Displaying custom results for your online bookstore based on what a visitor had tweeted about that day might push up sales. Perhaps a large percentage of your Facebook followers under the age of 25 are suddenly searching for particular things on your website, raising the possibility of a targeted campaign.

Maybe a trend is only just emerging. “When we used to analyse our marketplaces, we used to resort to statistical significance,” Sheldrake points out. Companies could not afford to act on a trend that wasn’t very strong. “But now, we can start looking for weak signals because there is zero cost to that. We have made ourselves a lot more sensitive to real-time responses.”

The problem with marrying social media analytics with management information is that in many cases, these other data sources are siloed within different departments. Big data may be useful, but it is also fragmented and hard to reassemble. As social media analytics become more sophisticated, the future barriers to use maybe as organisational as they are technical.

Show me the money

For many CEOs, the terms “retweet” and “influencer” won’t mean nearly as much as one simple phrase: “ROI”. Return on investment is a critical metric for those holding the purse strings, but how do you measure ROI in a social media context? It’s simple, says Andrew Bruce Smith, founder of digital communications company Escherman: Follow the traffic.

“You have to make a clear decision between financial and non-financial outcomes,” he says. Getting 20,000 more Twitter followers is a non-financial outcome. But if you can prove that a percentage of them visited your website because of a tweet, and subsequently bought something, then that counts.

In this context, one of the most important tools is also completely free: Google Analytics. It tells you how people got to your website, Smith explains, and what they did afterwards. It’s something that Sarah Flaherty, head of content and PR at insurance firm Confused.com, has been using to good effect.

“Through Google Analytics I tracked the traffic that came to our site, and then what they did,” she says, adding that she can tell if they came directly to the site via one of her social media campaigns or other content channels. “I can tell you from any piece of content whether their next step was to get a quote.”

Facebook also provides tools for measuring engagement success. Conversion Measurement lets businesses track the number of actions such as registrations or shopping cart checkouts from Facebook ads and sponsored stories, while Page Insights show the level of engagement users have with Facebook content.

Tracking analytics in enterprise tools such as Salesforce Buddy Media and Adobe Social are another method of measuring ROI.

Even if an organisation isn’t focused on sales, it can still tie website traffic from social media campaigns to other objectives, such as communicating a particular message, or getting people talking about a product. If you can quantify that, then you can measure it against your goals.

Look out for future articles on this site on the importance and impact of ROI.

How to Book a Flight with Google Flights #sunset #travel

#search for flights
#

All About Google Flights

In 2011, Google purchased ITA. the company that powers airline comparison shopping for sites like Travel ocity, Priceline, and Expedia. Their intent was to incorporate flight searches into Google, and that s exactly what they did. They ve also eliminated one of my biggest beefs with flight pricing: the incredibly long delay when you hit search. It s still far from perfect. You can t yet double up and find your hotel and rental car at the same time, for example, but I still use Google to double check that my search on a different engine is providing me with all the results and the best prices.

Getting to Google Flights

You can start by just typing a search into Google, like flights from MCI to NYC in October. The context will be enough to pull up the flights search in the left options menu in your Google search. If that fails, you can always just go directly to www.google.com/flights.

Beginning Your Search

Google Flights starts with a map of the US, because that s currently the only place you can comparison shop for tickets. International tickets are off the menu for now.

First you ll need to enter a departure point and destination. If you re logged into Google, your departure point may already be set based either on your default Google Maps location or your laptop s current location. It may also have been set by by your earlier search, which is one handy reason to start with the Google search. As soon as you ve got those points set, you ll see your proposed flight points on the map. It certainly makes it easy to verify that you did pick the right Springfield .

Next, you ll enter a date of departure and return in the box below the map.

As soon as you ve done that, you ll either see flights or a message that flights between those two points are not supported.

Filtering Results

Usually you ve got a price in mind when you search for tickets, or maybe you have a flight duration, arrival time, or specific rewards network in mind. Google can handle a lot of these requests.

First you ll notice right below the Depart and Return boxes, there are Depart and Duration boxes. You can use these individually to filter results instantly. You can also use the funky looking graphic box to the right of the Depart and Duration boxes to adjust both items at once. Once you click on that, you ll see a graphic slider with dots. You can see all the results that fit within your parameters as dots, and you can adjust the sliders until you know you ve found a good balance between convenience and availability.

Search Options

What if you don t care how long the flight is as long as it s nonstop? Google can handle that. Rather than using the graphic slider, check out the options on the left. You can limit results to nonstop flights, one stop or less, or two stops or less.

While we re at it, you can restrict your search to specific airlines, so you can stick with the company you know gives you mileage upgrades or free checked luggage. (It s still up to you to track which company that is.) You can also specify where you want to connect. That might be useful if you know you re going to wait for a three hour connection in an airport with free Wi-Fi.

Finally, you can also specify an outbound and inbound time. Click on the link marked specific time and use the slider to specify your travel window. I use this when I want to return from a conference without spending an extra night at the hotel.

Unknown Prices

Some airlines won t share their prices with ITA. Mainly it s Southwest. You have to book directly. However, Google will still show you when they re flying that day, so you can check the price with their website and then compare it to the prices you ve seen with the other airlines.

Booking Your Flight

Once you ve chosen your flight, you can click on the price, and it will turn into a button that says Book. Clicking the button takes you directly to the airline s website where you can book the flight. This even works when the flight is actually on two different airlines. You still only need to book the flight on one airline, and it will know exactly the details you need. If you re booking on Southwest or another unknown price airline, you won t get a Book button. You ll need to go to the airline s website and book it from there. However, if you want to book a flight and hotel, it might be worth your while to check to see if Travelocity or some other company doesn t have a better combined vacation package deal .

Introducing the largest travel metasearch engine in the world: Google #cheap
