In Greece, you are standing at a crossroads of cultures, colours and civilizations. You feel the strength of history and the warmth of being in the southern most part of Europe, and you discover an evolutionary process of thought, influence and experience. A landscape that has given us thousands of postcard images, but remains incredibly vibrant and impossible to capture. Greece is a country of beautiful contradictions, a constant journey in time, from the present to the past and back again. Walk through the olive groves and through ancients sites. Move to clusters of sparsely inhabited islands. Explore the beaches, rocky-mountains and marvel at the breathtaking scenery. In Greece, the fusion of images becomes more than imagery and turns into reality. Explore your senses in Greece.

Greece is situated in south-eastern Europe, and shares borders with Turkey in the north-east and in the north with Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. The rest of Greece is fringed by the Mediterranean.

Greece has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. Due to the country s geographical position, its rugged relief and its distribution between the mainland and the sea, there is a great variation in Greece s climate. In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by seasonal winds, while mountainous regions have generally lower temperatures. The winters are mild in lowland areas, with a minimum amount of snow and ice, yet, the mountains are usually snow-covered. The summers (May- October) are dry and hot (average temperatures in summer are 25 C- 34 C), whilst winters are cool (5 C- 15 C) with some rain and wind.

Greek, English is widely spoken.

South African passport holders require a visa for Greece.

Bottled water 1L EUR 1.00

Can of coke EUR 1.00

Bottle of local beer EUR 1.50

Take away lunch EUR 11.00

Dinner at a restaurant EUR 25.00

20 minute taxi journey EUR 16.00

*Purchase price will vary depending on point of sale.

Below are a few hints that may help you when planning for your trip to Greece:

For South African passport holders, a visa is required to enter Greece. This visa must be obtained prior to departure from South Africa.

The climate is Mediterranean, pleasant and healthy due to its distinctive dryness. Very hot summers and cold winters. Rain falls mainly during the winter months. Summer months range from June to September and winter starts in December through to March.

Lightweight clothes in the summer, like shorts and t-shirts, and warmer clothes in winter. There are no fixed dress regulations in Greece. Greeks are casual with regard to dress during the day. They do, however, dress up in the evenings when going out to dinner or shows. Comfortable shoes are a must and sandals for the beach are required. Do bring your own beach towel and several swimming costumes, as these will be the most essential items on the islands.

The unit of currency is the Euro. The bills will come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. The design of the bills is the same throughout the euro zone. Coins will be worth either one or two euros or in euro cents — 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 or 1. The coins will have a common face on one side. But on the other side, the symbol will differ from one country to another. Whatever the denomination, the same euro bills and coins can be used in all of the euro zone countries.

Exchange facilities are found at the airports, banks and hotels. Banks are open Monday to Thursday from 08.00 to 14.00 and on Friday from 08.00 to 13.30. They are closed on holidays and weekends.

Some passengers have reported difficulties using American Express and Diners Cards to pay for their meals etc. in their hotels. These credit cards are not as widely accepted as Visa and Mastercards.

Working hours in summer is usually from 09.00 to 13.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00, Monday to Saturday. Shopping in Greece is amazing when it comes to buying shoes, bags, clothes, furs and jewellery. The main shopping areas for tourists are situated in the centre of Athens namely, Syntagma, Kolonkai, Omonia, Monastiraki and Plaka. Sales occur twice a year, in August and February. The shops in the centre of Athens do not close for siesta and are therefore open from 08.00 to 20.30 hours.

In Greece, particularly in Athens, there are plenty of luxury restaurants serving international and Greek cuisine, tavernas and barbecues. When in Greece one must definitely taste the traditional food. In a local taverna you will be offered various starters mezze followed by kebabs souvlakia (yiro) with pita bread and tzatziki (yoghurt/cucumber/garlic sauce). The spinach leaves stuffed with mince and rice dolmades are a must. Greek salads are made in true Greek style with fresh feta cheese and olives. They have many tempting sweets made with phyllo pastry, nuts and syrup called baklava .

In Athens you can choose from many theatres, opera houses, numerous winter as well as summer open-air cinemas. There is a wide choice of nightclubs, music halls, discos and tavernas with the popular bouzouki instrument players. Most of them are gathered in the centre of Athens in the Plaka district.

Passengers should restrict themselves to one suitcase each, in addition to hand luggage. Please pack necessary medication in your hand luggage, as well as a change of clothing in the event of any delays.

Taxis are numerous in all Greek cities and most of them speak English, therefore, the language barrier is not a problem. Do however be careful not to be ripped off with charges. Make sure all taxis run on the metre.

You will generally find that the Greeks are helpful therefore we urge one to conform to worldwide trends in this regard. Hotel porters should receive a small tip (approximately 1), for carrying your luggage (unless travelling in a group in which case this may be included in the tour cost). Guides and drivers should also receive a gratuity and the customary 10 % is recommended for restaurant visits and room service.

Recommended average rates for passengers are:

Guide: Euro 4.- per passenger per day for a full day s services

Driver: Euro 2.- per passenger per day for full day s services.

Hotel staff: Usually 10 % of restaurant/room service bill.

For passengers not travelling as part of a group but rather with individual services please increase your tipping accordingly we suggest doubling above rates for Guide and Driver.

We recommend that you bring some kind of washing soap to do your hand washing. It is also a good idea to bring a blow up hanger, as not all hotel hangers can be removed from the cupboards. Remember to take suntan oil and protection cream. Do not forget the hat for the beach. Most hotels have hair dryers in the room. However, if you do take yours along, make sure that you have an international adaptor set.

Greece has the same voltage as South Africa (220V). The majority of electrical sockets take a two-prong plug. An adaptor- set (multi plug) is recommended.

If hiring a car or scooter on any of the islands, please keep your International Driver s licence handy. Helmets are compulsory and yet seldom worn, but if caught without it, you will be charged accordingly.

Please remember that it is imperative to re-confirm your flight at least 72 hours prior to departure. Failure to do so will result in the automatic cancellation of your flight.

A suggestion from several passengers: If you enjoy your tea/coffee, take a small immersion heater (plus international adaptor set to make sure the electrical plug will fit), a mug, tea/coffee bags, sugar and milk powder/Cremora. Ordering coffee/tea from room service is expensive!

    Greece

    Summary

Summary – Mykonos International Airport will be closed from 13 to 29 November 2017 for runway repairs; if you plan to visit Mykonos Island during this period, contact your airline or travel operator to make alternative arrangements

Mykonos International Airport will be closed from 13 to 29 November 2017 for runway repairs. If you plan to visit Mykonos Island during this period, contact your airline or travel operator to make alternative arrangements.

The airline and tour operator Monarch went into administration on 2 October 2017. The repatriation flights for non-ATOL protected passengers have now ceased. You can find information and advice on flights, accommodation and reimbursement for expenses incurred on the dedicated website, or by calling the hotline on 0300 303 2800 (if calling from the UK) or +44 1753 330 330 (if calling from outside the UK).

If you need consular assistance above and beyond information on replacement flights or accommodation, please contact your nearest British embassy or consulate. Greece has capital controls in place. You can withdraw cash using a UK card up to the daily limit imposed by the Greek banking system (usually €600) or the daily limit imposed by your UK card issuer – whichever is the lower amount. You can pay for retail transactions with debit and credit cards as you would elsewhere. The Greek government currently limits cash withdrawals from Greek bank accounts to €1800 per month. There are no restrictions on taking euros from the UK to Greece or bringing euros back from Greece to the UK at the end of your stay. When travelling outside the UK you should take more than one means of payment with you (cash, debit card, credit card).

British nationals make around 3 million visits to Greece every year. Most visits are trouble-free, but you should take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. See Crime

Terrorist attacks in Greece can’t be ruled out. See Terrorism

You should apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you travel. If you already have an EHIC, make sure it hasn’t expired.

Some medical costs aren’t covered by the EHIC, so you should also take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.

The emergency services number in Greece is 112. Calling 999 from a UK mobile in Greece will automatically transfer you to the Greek emergency services.

Carry a copy of your passport or other photographic ID which confirms British nationality at all times.

The Greek police won’t accept rowdy or indecent behaviour, especially where excessive drinking is involved. Greek courts impose heavy fines or prison sentences on people who behave indecently. Your travel insurance may not cover you after drinking. See Local laws and customs.

There have been reports of an increase in holidaymakers being encouraged to submit a claim for personal injury if they have experienced gastric illness during their stay. You can find more information about the action you can take if you have suffered a personal injury on the Citizens Advice website. You should only consider pursuing a complaint or claim if you have genuinely suffered from injury or illness. If you make a false or fraudulent claim, you may face legal proceedings in the UK or Greece.

There are regular strikes, sometimes called at short notice that can cause disruption to public transport (including air travel and ports), as well as road networks and borders. You should avoid all demonstrations and follow the advice given by local security authorities. See Major pre-planned strikes and demonstrations

If you’re abroad and you need emergency help from the UK government, contact the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission.

Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.

The Overseas Business Risk service offers information and advice for British companies operating overseas on how to manage political, economic, and business security-related risks.

Where Planning a Trip to Greece is Almost as Fun as Going There

Travel greece Hi. Welcome to Greece Travel for 2018, my 22nd Season of writing my Greece Travel Guides. This is the index for all my Greece Travel web sites. I attempted to organize it so that people would not get lost so easily and even though some say it is fun to be lost, occasionally you need a place to come back to and get your bearings. This is that place. This is the main index and the links below are secondary indexes which lead to thousands of other pages. You may want to save this page to your favorite places so you can find it again. If you have any questions or can’t decide what you want to do or you can’t find a page that you were looking for you can always e-mail me . This site contains no cookies or obnoxious pop-up ads or tricks to make you click on something you don’t care about. Some pages do open new windows but most don’t so you can easily find your way back to where you started by using your browser arrows. Every page has been created and is edited individually so my Greece Travel web site is literally handmade.

Travel greeceMy Greece Travel Guide began as a hobby in 1995 and since then it has grown in popularity and size. 99% of the material in my guides was written by myself. I don’t have a staff. I took all the photos with the exception of some of the historical ones. I update the site continuously so unlike a guidebook I don’t have to wait for the next printing to fix a mistake. People have been asking me how they can contribute. First of all you can contribute by using the agencies I recommend, found on my Travel Agents Page . Without their support this site could not exist. Another way to contribute is to help spread the word about my Greece Travel Guides. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell strangers on the travel bulletin boards. If you have your own website or blog make a link. If you are on Facebook or Google+ you can use the button at the bottom of this and many of the other pages. The only way I can compete with the big commercial sites is with your help. If you plan to book hotels on your own without the use of a travel agent you can go through my Booking.com affiliate page which I get a small commission from.

Important Note : There is a lot of information on my website and it is all free to anyone whether you booked through the travel agents, the hotels or Air BnB. But it is the commissions I get from hotel bookings on my affiliate website with Booking.com that supports this website and enable me to continue doing the work I enjoy. So my request to you is that if you are using other sites to book hotels and apartments and using my websites for everything else and are thankful for the information you have received from it please think about donating whatever you can afford so I can continue to be creative. You can use Paypal and send whatever you like to [email protected] with a note so I know who you are and I can thank you. You can also send a check or money order to Matt Barrett at 102 Old Pittsboro Rd, Carrboro, North Carolina, USA. 27510.

You can read what others have said about my Greece Guides and the travel agencies and services on my Testimonials Pages

Remember if you have any questions about services, itineraries, problems or anything having to do with Greece or if you are looking for something on the site and can’t find it you can e-mail me and I will respond quickly. There is no fee. All info is Free.

I hope to see you in Greece!

    Donate to SOS Children’s Villages?

The people of Greece need your help, especially now and I know that people who use my website would donate money if they knew who to donate to and how. SOS Children’s Villages help children who have lost their parents or are homeless for other reasons. There is no better time to donate than now because with the economic crisis in Greece they need donations more than ever. You can visit their website to read about their work and then donate by bank transfer or following the link to paypal. You can mention my site if you like.

Crossroads Travel Tour Excellent travel company that we used for other tours as well. We saw Pergamom, Troy and Gallipoli peninsula. Our guide for Galipoli was a retired professor and though fascinating, ended up saturating us with information. Most knowledgeable guide of our month long trip. We changed buses at Gallipoli and travelled 5+ hours to Istanbul. Still had time to explore the city for a few hours before lights out. There was not much to see at Troy but still worth going. Some walls were 4500 years old! Pergamom has incredible history and vistas.

    Travel greece

Independent tour with CROSSROADS Travel We stayed in Siringe, near Ephesus. our guide, Begum, was with Crossroads Travel. Begum is a beautiful young woman, so friendly and warm, spoke perfect English, and we just loved her from the minute she arrived at our hotel to pick us up for our tour. She knew everything there was to know about Ephesus, Priene, and Didyma- the main sights we went to in the area. I would HIGHLY recommend hiring Begum from Crossroads Travel in the Ephesus/Kusadasi area. We were so sad to have to say goodbye to her- after only 2 days together, she felt like an old friend!

    Travel greece

We enjoyed a day tour through the Goreme valley and saw a lot. It does not matter what part of cappadocia you see first, it is all truly amazing for a first time visitor to Turkey. There were several highlights, the open air museum was also one, and if you do enter this museum, do not forget to spend the extra 8TL to see the dark chapel, the frescoes are amazing and it is no wonder that photos are not allowed, so just get some postcards! The tour was a nice size of 13 people and the tourleader was quite helpful.

    Travel greece

Ephesus a must see We did a day tour of Ephesus with Crossroads Travel Tours including lunch (mediocre), Turkish carpet shop and leather factory. Our guide (Specky?) had excellent English and was incredibly knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. Ephesus is very close to Kusadasi but would recommend staying in smaller Selcuk. This site is phenomenal and the history extremely interesting. Our guide made it come alive. There is a lot of walking but mostly flat surface. The pace was excellent whether you are active or not,

    Travel greece

Turkey, Ephesus, Early Churches, St. Mary’s House We went on a tour for 13 days via Crossroads travels covering Turkey, Patmos and Athens. I would strongly recommend Crossroads travels and all were well organised and more over they are ready to tailor make your package to suit your budget and interest. Istanbul was a short stay as I was scared of the recent protest but found it safe. Kusadasia and the ancient churches Ephesus, Sardis, Smyrna (Izmir), and Philadelphia were really interesting and spiritually nourishing. We also visited St. Mary’s house, St.Johns tomb and the 7 sleepers where many saints were buried. Kusadasia has other attractions but the Ada aqua park is not worthy for the money spent and not comparable to what you see in Singapore or Melbourne.

    Greece

Travel to greece Hi.

If you enjoy using my Greece Guides and find this page useful please share it with your friends on Facebook and Google+ by using the buttons on this, and other pages.

Travel to greeceMy Greece Travel Guide began as a hobby in 1995 and since then it has grown in popularity and size.

    Greece travel

    Greece travel

We enjoyed a day tour through the Goreme valley and saw a lot. It does not matter what part of cappadocia you see first, it is all truly amazing for a first time visitor to Turkey. There were several highlights, the open air museum was also one, and if you do enter this museum, do not forget to spend the extra 8TL to see the dark chapel, the frescoes are amazing and it is no wonder that photos are not allowed, so just get some postcards! The tour was a nice size of 13 people and the tourleader was quite helpful.

    Greece travel

Ephesus a must see We did a day tour of Ephesus with Crossroads Travel Tours including lunch (mediocre), Turkish carpet shop and leather factory. Our guide (Specky?) had excellent English and was incredibly knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. Ephesus is very close to Kusadasi but would recommend staying in smaller Selcuk. This site is phenomenal and the history extremely interesting. Our guide made it come alive. There is a lot of walking but mostly flat surface. The pace was excellent whether you are active or not,

    Greece travel

    Why travel to Greece?

    Greece travel packages

Why travel to Greece? Really loved by people, this country is so rich in culture and beauty that it never seems to be fully explored, no matter how many times you come for holidays. This is, after all, one of the reasons that brought it in the list with the top 20 tourist destinations in the world. Apart from its highly cosmopolitan side and the upscale levels of tourism, Greece has a more substantial way to charm.

    Who travels there?

    Greece travel packages

The country attracts in average 16-18 millions of tourists every year, while in record years this number may reach 20 million tourists. Visitors in Greece cover all categories and ages. There are families with kids searching for a relaxing beach destination, couples or honeymooners on romantic holidays, teenagers and youth looking for long party nights or history lovers on archaeological tours. In every case, a trip to Greece is a dream come true for everyone. The natural beauty, the reviving sun light and the rich culture open an entire new world to visitors. Even celebrities travel in Greece in summer, while many of them have holiday homes in the Greek islands.

    Preparing your travel

Information you need to know before organizing your Greece travel:

    How to get there?

The transportation for your holidays in Greece is something you should not worry about, as this is one of the most easy-to-reach destinations.

Get there by plane: Obviously the fastest and easiest way to travel to Greece is by plane, especially if you live in Europe. Many international air companies have regular flights to Athens and in tourist season there are many flights to Greek islands.

Get there by ferry: There are ferry companies operating between Italy and Greece all year round. Particularly there are ferries from Trieste, Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi in Italy to Patra, Igoumenitsa, Corfu and Kefalonia in Greece, facilitating European visitors who want to come to Greece with their car.

    When to travel?

    Greece travel packages

Tourist season in Greece is officially April through October, with July and August being the two high season months. If you are looking for privacy, relaxation and less crowded places, then you should prefer the period between April and June. During this season, it will be easier to find budget accommodation and to book tickets for your transportation to and from Greece. Of course, there is always high season that lasts from mid July till late August. The popular Greek islands receive the majority of visitors these two hot months, but the more secluded islands keep their calm atmosphere.

    Where to go?

Travel Agents, Tours and Services in Greece

The best way to book your trip to Greece and make sure things run smoothly is by using a reliable Greek Travel Agency who will make sure there are no unpleasant surprises and will solve problems before you are ever aware of them. Travelers who book with these agencies are met by a representative upon their arrival in Athens and on the islands and helped every step of the way. They are also available should any problems arise. I have created this index that should make it easy for you to find a travel agency that is best suited to the type of traveler you are or whatever your plans are for Greece. Or if you prefer to book things on your own you can use this page as well. These are the travel agencies, tours and guides I recommend in Greece. If you have any questions about which particular agency would be best for what you want to do in Greece you can e-mail me. I have put the most popular programs and services at the top. There are more tours and specialized itineraries at the bottom of the page. Unlike other guides which issue a disclaimer that they are not responsible for the agencies or information on their pages, I happen to know all these agencies personally and trust them completely. You won’t find better. If you find this page useful please share it on Google+ and Facebook using the buttons at the bottom of the page.

    Fantasy Travel’s Special Offers Page

New Economical Packages. Fantasy Travel has put together a number of packages that offer quality accomodation for economical prices. Most packages that seem too good to be true are actually not as good as they seem, often using hotels that are in areas you really don’t want to stay in, to keep the price down. But Fantasy’s economy packages feature hotels in and around the Plaka in Athens and are all good quality hotels. I recommend Fantasy Travel’s program The Pursuit of Pleasure which is 12 Days and 11 nights in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini including hotels, ferries, transfers, tours, admission to archaeological sites and breakfast starting at 940 euros per person. You can’t beat the price for these hotels and this itinerary. Or their 8 day package that includes a 4-day cruise plus Athens-Delphi-Meteora which starts at 595 euros per person. While its economic reputation has taken a battering, Greece remains a premier-league travel destination. Its incredible historic sites span four millennia, encompassing both the legendary and the obscure. Its convoluted coastline is punctuated by superb beaches, while its mountainous interior urges you to dust off your hiking boots and explore. Yet perhaps its greatest riches are the islands, ranging from backwaters where the boat calls twice a week to resorts as cosmopolitan as any in the Mediterranean.

For anyone with a cultural bone in their body Greece cannot fail to inspire. Minoans, Romans, Arabs, Latin Crusaders, Venetians, Slavs, Albanians and Turks have all left their mark, and almost every town or village has a link to the past, whether it’s a delicately crumbling temple to Aphrodite, a forbidding Venetian fort or a dusty Byzantine monastery decorated with exquisite frescoes. And let’s not forget the museums stuffed to bursting with Classical sculpture and archeological treasures.

But the call to cultural duty will never be too overwhelming on a Greek holiday. The hedonistic pleasures of languor and warmth – swimming in balmy seas at dusk, talking and drinking under the stars – are just as appealing. Bar a few upmarket and “boutique” exceptions you may struggle to find five-star comfort – orthopaedic mattresses, faultless plumbing and cordon bleu cuisine are not the country’s strongpoint – but this isn’t really what the Greek experience is about. Greek food, for example, is at its best fresh, abundant and uncomplicated, while the genuine welcome you receive at the simplest taverna is often enough to get you booking next year’s break as soon as you have returned home.

Whatever you come here for, it’s clear that Greece needs its tourists like never before. For the last few years it’s been synonymous with financial calamity with a titanic debt crisis seemingly ready to engulf Europe. However, this seems to have put off few people (visits to the islands were up 30 percent in 2011). Perhaps they know what we’ve known since the first edition of this guide was published thirty years ago – Greece can offer surprises and a true sense of discovery to even the most demanding traveller.

Greece Train Travel: Learn About Trains in Greece – Rail Europe

    Greece

    Ride the Rails in Greece

Although Greece has dramatically upgraded its rail infrastructure, it s wise to travel only on the major lines. Though safe, the local rails remain slow and tough to navigate (especially for the neophyte). Exceptions? Very touristy routes like Athens to the port city Piraeus (only 20 minutes by suburban train).

We recommend the InterCity or InterCityExpress trains. From Athens, you can journey to the very hip city of Thessaloniki (check out the fashion and the food) and onwards towards Katerini (home to several archeological digs). From there travel to ancient Corinth in just ninety minutes, and then to the port of Patras. Final destination? Argos, arguably Greece s oldest city, and the ruins of the Heraeum temple where the goddess Hera was revered.

Most IC and ICE trains offer decent comfort in second class, but first class is still preferable (except on very short journeys). On longer trips, on-board food services are good and reasonably priced.

Seat assignments vary by train and route. If you purchase a ticket for travel within Greece from Rail Europe, you will receive an ticket without a reservation. If a seat reservation is required or If you re traveling with a pass (e.g. Eurail Pass, Balkan Pass), you may book your reservation locally since they re only available within Greece. Use the OSE (Greek railways) offices in the main cities. They re less crowded and more helpful, and the reservation is free.

And if your travel plans include visiting both Italy and Greece, consider the Eurail Attica Pass. This pass includes round-trip ferry travel between Italy and Greece, plus travel to the Greek islands once you re there.

    Greece

Greece (Greek. Ελλάδα, Elláda ) is a country in Southern Europe, on the southernmost tip of the Balkan peninsula, with extensive coastlines and islands in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. It shares borders in the north with Albania. the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Bulgaria. and Turkey. It has an ancient culture that has had a significant influence on the arts, language, philosophy, politics, and sports of western society, including the genres of comedy and drama, western alphabets, Platonic ideals and the Socratic method, democracies and republics, and the Olympics. Furthermore it’s a geographically appealing place to visit, with a mountainous mainland and idyllic island beaches.

    Understand Edit

    Backstreets of charming Firá, Santoríni

Over 90% of visitors come to Greece from other European countries, although in recent years there have been growing numbers of tourists from other world regions. The vast majority of visitors arrive during the tourist season, which is April through October. Peak season is July through August, and most of the tourists and tourism industry are concentrated in Crete. the Dodecanese. Cyclades. and Western Greek Islands. and to a lesser extent the Peloponnese and the Halkidiki peninsula in Macedonia. There are still many rewarding areas in the country free of large-scale tourism.

Many first-time visitors arrive in Greece with specific images in mind and are surprised to discover a country with such regional and architectural diversity. The famous whitewashed homes and charming blue-domed churches only characterize a specific region of the country (the Cyclades Islands). Architecture varies greatly from one region to the next depending on the local history. Visitors will find Neoclassical architecture in the cities of Ermoupolis and Nafplion. Ottoman-influenced buildings in Grevená and Kozáni, whitewashed Cycladic homes on the island of Paros. and pastel-coloured baroque homes and churches on Corfu. The nation’s terrain is just as varied as its architectural heritage: idyllic beaches, towering mountain ranges, wine-producing valleys, vast stretches of olive orchards in the south, and lush forests in the north. Greece’s historical sights are just as varied; the country is littered with just as many medieval churches and castles as classical ruins and temples.

    History Edit

Greece boasts a very long history, with the Greek language being present in the country for nearly 4000 years.

    First civilizations Edit

The country’s first inhabitants are now referred to as the Pelasgians. Little is known about them, but it is believed that they were a primitive tribe of people. The first advanced civilizations in Greece are known as the Cycladic in the Cyclades Islands. and the Minoan in Crete and Santorini. The Minoans had a written language which remains undecipherable to modern-day archaeologists. This is one of the most interesting and profound historical mysteries. It is a link to our modern civilization.

Greek-speaking Indo-European peoples arrived in the country from somewhere to the north, around 1700 BC, and slowly invaded the entire country from the north all the way to Crete. as well as the west coast of Asia Minor (now Turkey ), absorbing the native peoples. Their arrival may have been responsible for ending the Cycladic and Minoan civilizations and brought the country into what is now referred to as the Dark Age of ancient Greece; although it is now understood among historians that civilization in Greece remained sophisticated and advanced during this time. The first Greek-speaking civilization, the Mycenean Civilization, centred in the Peloponnese region, was prominent during this time period.

Many ancient Greeks made a living from the sea, as their descendants the modern Greeks also do now. They became accomplished fishers, sailors and traders and the sea has profoundly shaped Greek civilization.

    Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures.

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities in remote areas that put them at risk for bat bites (such as adventure travel and caving).
    • People who will be working with or around bats (such as wildlife professionals and researchers).

Where Planning a Trip to Greece is Almost as Fun as Going There

Hi. Welcome to Greece Travel for 2015, my 19th Season of writing my Greece Travel Guides. This is the index for all my Greece Travel websites. If you have any questions or can’t decide what you want to do or you can’t find a page that you were looking for you can always e-mail me. This site contains no cookies or obnoxious pop-up ads or tricks to make you click on something you don’t care about. Some pages do open new windows but most don’t so you can easily find your way back to where you started by using your browser arrows. Every page has been created and is edited individually so my Greece Travel website is literally handmade.

See the Chinese version of my Greece Travel Guide at 希腊旅游手册

My Greece Travel Guide began as a hobby in 1995 and since then it has grown in popularity and size. 99% of the material in my guides was written by myself. I don’t have a staff. I took all the photos with the exception of some of the historical ones. I update the site continuously so unlike a guidebook I don’t have to wait for the next printing to fix a mistake. People have been asking me how they can contribute. First of all you can contribute by using the agencies I recommend, found on my Travel Agents Page. You can also buy one of my Greece Travel T-shirts which will enable you to get discounts in shops and restaurants in Greece.

Sightseeing tours in Greece and Greek islands

Taking a tour is certainly the most convenient way to explore places and sightseeings in Greece. The majority of guided Greece tours are organized in Athens. Santorini. Mykonos. Corfu. Crete and other tourist developed destinations around the country. These tours include visits to important monuments, picturesque places and occasionally interesting museums.

Tours in Greece take place in modern, air-conditioned bus with the latest comforts and they are usually accompanied by a guide. Very fun are also the boat tours in the islands. Famous boat trips in Greece are, for example, the trip to the volcano of Santorini, to the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos. and from Mykonos to the sacred island of Delos. These boat trips give the chance for an enjoyable and interesting day at the sun.

Apart from day tours, there are also multi-days tours departing mostly from Athens and Thessaloniki. These multi-day tours combine visits to interesting archaeological sites, beach destinations and picturesque places around the Greek mainland. These Greece tours packages include accommodation in upscale hotels, transfer with modern bus and occasionally half or full board.

Greek island tours are also very popular in summer, combining many islands and departing either directly from an island or from Athens.

If you do not like group tours, then ask for private one so that you have a less strict schedule and more freedom to organize your trip. Transfer in these private tours is made by taxi or small van if you are a large company.

Want to make a tour by yourself? Check our Self Drive Tours to the mainland.

Want to know who is Greeka? We are a company licensed by the GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organization) with the No 0207E60000472200.

    Travel Tips Greece #the #travel #channel

    Features

The good news for travellers to Greece is this: ignore the crisis headlines. Away from the grim scenes in central Athens. life goes on as normal; there s little sign of impending doom, instead it s consistent blue skies, clear water and good cheer. These tips are the accumulated wisdom of avid Hellenophile Marc Perry, after three trips around northern Greece over the past three years, on foot, buses and trains.

    1. Never ask for a second opinion

This goes for finding out times or directions – you’ll create a street-side debate and probably end up confused by too many conflicting options. Everyone has different views: this being the birthplace of democracy.

While it’s still state owned, it s cheap. For example, the 350km stretch between Thessaloníki and Alexandroúpoli  costs just €13. Thanks to German engineering the mainline trains are very modern and sleek, and thanks to Greek attitudes the staff manning them are so laid-back they’re practically horizontal. Once, after I missed my station – due to not being able to read or hear Greek properly – the guard phoned ahead to an oncoming train, pulled into a siding and let me off to switch. Being British I expected a fine, but all I got was a friendly pat on the back, a chuckle and a big grin from the guard.

These state that something must absolutely definitely be done in a certain way – but if you smile, make a fuss, or know someone, maybe not. Places where I was told I absolutely must book ahead swung their doors open when I turned up spontaneously, so do try your luck.

Greeks are family-centric. If you want to make friends, take the initiative. When you cut through the blank looks, the bluff and the gruff – especially of older men – people will talk to you forever and are extremely warm and helpful. Do learn a few well-chosen phrases as it helps melt the Greek reserve. A quick ti-kanis (“how are you?”) goes a long way.

Buses and trains often leave you waiting, so half an hour means an hour and a half, one hour means three. Chill out. You re in a beautiful, warm, laid-back place. A Greek friend once observed: When we meet for coffee we mean three hours, not ten minutes.

Rough camping is largely tolerated. People even camp under no camping signs, and if rules are ever implemented, it’s in a casual manner. Impromptu campsites often pop up at favoured beaches, and in select places nudism is allowed too; great for those seeking that all-over tan. The islands of Samothráki (or Samothrance) and Amorgós have a particularly good reputation for natural living hippy-style: fig leaves provided free of charge.

Greece is so hot you have to chill out somehow, so try the local alcoholic beverages: tsiupouro. (pronounced chib-ber-roo), distilled from grape residue, has you laughing all night yet waking up with a clear head. God gave us it to think clearly, according to a Mount Athos  monk, whose brotherhood does a fine line in their own brand. For sober refreshment, drinking water is freely available at ornate town springs and village fountain-taps, so save yourself a few Euros by topping up a water bottle.

Greece is an Orthodox Christian country. Don t be surprised to see roadside shrines and people signing the cross. Older passengers on buses and planes sign when it gets bumpy or if there’s a near miss. If you’re Catholic be choosy whom you share this with – the schism between Orthodoxy and Catholicism is still a bone of contention in certain quarters.

Greece is littered with ruins, coves, little islands and quiet villages that you’ll never find in tourist literature. On the hilltops of towns and villages I’ve often found an ancient column kicking about in the grass, and on the southern outskirts of Ierissos in Halkidhikí. curiosity led me to find a natural cave, complete with stalagmites and a small stream, inside a quaint little church. Seek out these hidden gems before your fellow travellers ruin the experience!

Food served partially warm is normal, so don t complain – there’s plenty in that golden sun to warm your bones and enrich your memories for years to come.

Queuing is largely an abhorrence to Greeks (unless it s to make a confession to a priest!) so sharpen those elbows and show your assertive side.

Greek debt relief closer than ever but creditors must act, Greek

Greek debt relief ‘closer than ever’ but creditors must act, Greek prime minister says

ATHENS Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras kept up his demand for debt relief from international lenders on Tuesday, saying Athens was close to securing a solution to ease its debt mountain but that creditors must meet there commitments.

Greece wants to wrap up negotiations with the lenders — the European Union and International Monetary Find — on reforms and on debt relief this month.

It needs another tranche of bailout money, wants to qualify for inclusion in the European Central Bank’s bond-buying program, and seeks to return to bond markets immediately afterwards.

“We are closer than ever to a substantial solution on debt relief,” said Tsipras reiterating that Greece had already agreed to apply more austerity after its current bailout expires and it was its lenders’ turn to fulfill their promises of discussions about debt relief.

“Τhe ball is no longer in our court,” he told reporters referring to lenders’ statements on debt relief in past years.

Despite Greece’s recent statements and a bailout review agreement at staff level, sources close to the lenders have been less optimistic seeing talks on debt relief lasting longer than May.

This is because of sharp differences between the IMF and Germany, Europe’s paymaster, over the Greece’s fiscal targets. The former says Greece’s target and debt are unsustainable; the latter, with an election coming, is less willing to drop its hard line.

After six months of tense talks, Athens and the lenders reached a deal last week on a set of additional reforms the country needs to implement in 2019-20, two years after its current, 86-billion euro bailout program expires.

Greece wants euro zone finance ministers to approve the reforms’ deal at a scheduled Eurogroup meeting on May 22 — a key condition for unlocking vital loans — but also agree on a formula to make its debt sustainable in the medium-term and long term.

Debt sustainability is key for the European Central Bank and the Washington-based IMF, which participated financially in the country’s first two rescue packages, but has yet to announce whether it will join Greece’s current program, the third since 2010.

Greek lawmakers are expected to vote on the new austerity package by May 18, before euro zone finance ministers assess the country’s progress.

Tsipras, who is sagging in opinion polls and whose term expires in 2019, controls 153 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament and he is expected to pass the bill.

But the delays in the negotiations have slowed projected economic growth and have exacerbated reform fatigue after seven years of austerity hurting the government’s popularity further.

Asked whether he was considering a cabinet reshuffle, Tsipras ruled it out.

“We are not considering it. Our aim now is to speed up work as much as we can,” he said during a visit at the education ministry, where he announced a planned education reform.

    Cheap flights to Greece

Whether you re a culture vulture hunting for Europe s most ancient archaeological sites, a party animal looking for some of the world s best clubs, or simply want to bake on a beach, then Greece should be at the top of your list.

Birthplace of democracy, land of the gods and the cradle of western civilization, yes all these things describe Greece, but what else do those old travel guides say? How about a holiday destination you won t forget in a hurry. Greece is a treasure trove of history and culture. Think two thousand year old Greek temples, Venetian fortifications and Byzantine monasteries perched high on mountaintops and you get the picture. Its cities are modern bustling metropolises that double up as open-air museums. Athens. its capital, is a modern and bustling city with nightlife to match and museums and monuments at every turn catch the Acropolis at night for one of the world s most impressive sights. Other cities like Thessaloniki ooze elegance and style with their beachfront promenades, neoclassical buildings and large avenues.

But what sets this remarkable country apart are its 200 or so inhabited islands, complete with beaches that rival the Caribbean for their beauty, and centuries old villages that have stood still with time. What s more, they all have their own distinct character, from Mykonos with its chic whitewashed towns, pumping nightlife and classy beach bars to Santorini and its breathtaking sunsets and black beaches. Or why not take a break in Corfu or Zante and take in some stunning Greek countryside while staying in some of Greece s most developed and tourist friendly resorts? Of course, if it s variety and size you re after then look no further than beautiful Crete with its mountain views, Venetian towns, and Europe s only forest of palm trees. The Greek islands really do have something for everyone, and with 200 to choose from the choice really is yours.

While we all know about Greece s fantastic year-round weather, and the hospitality of its people, did you also know that it also has one of Europe s best cuisines with fresh fish, stewed lamb and salads to die for just try the tomatoes here to see what we mean. And when it comes to desserts, Greece really is king with cake and pastry shops literally on every corner. So if you re after Europe s best beaches, its most beautiful countryside, great food and Europe s oldest historical sights and cities then look no further than unforgettable Greece.

    Greece weather

If you re after a good climate then you can t get much better than the weather in Greece. Most people come to this country for the summer, but Greece s weather is also great during the spring and autumn months from April to May and September to October. And for those who want to escape the winter chill, consider taking city breaks in Athens or Thessaloniki. where you ll find weather forecasts showing temperatures considerably warmer than in northern Europe.

#how to get cheap flight tickets

Finding the Cheap Flights to Greece

    • Be willing to travel any day of the week. If your schedule permits, check a day or two before your optimal arrival and departure dates.
    • Check who is flying to Athens International Airport near your departure date; you may notice a new airline which will be offering promotional fares. You may also find a European regional airline that you never thought of taking before.
    • If you re thinking of taking a tour or cruise, see what airfare deals they offer and find out if you can extend your trip to allow time for independent travel.
    • Consider flying directly to Kerkyra (Corfu). Thessaloniki. Rhodes. or through Chania or Heraklion on the island of Crete. Airlines flying out of Britain and Germany have many direct flights to these locations.
    • Try an open-jaw flight – go into Athens but fly home out of Heraklion. Rhodes, Thessaloniki or Kerkyra.
    • Check 3-5 different resources before clicking that Pay button anywhere. Recent test searches on a half-dozen sites brought me lowest price listings from $953 to $1842 – for a trip being booked four months in advance. Results constantly change, but for my test trip departing from San Diego to Heraklion, Crete, done within minutes of each other, these were the results:

    Kayak – $1430 (quoting Cheaptickets)
