High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs

Spring and summer travel could become just a dream for many travelers as gas prices affect airfare. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON , D.C. (CBSDC)   For many Americans, the lamentation of rising gas costs is nothing new. It’s an everyday reality to see prices at the pump going up.

But now, those looking to get away from it all may encounter further troubles doing so, thanks to gas price hikes that have the potential to curb holiday travel and drive up the cost of plane tickets.

Travel buffs are just beginning to solidify their spring break and summer vacation plans. As they do, comparison shopping may show that such hikes have already started to take their toll on the cost of airfare.

[R]ising jet fuel costs put significant cost pressure on the airline industry, Steve Lott, vice present of communications for Airlines for America told CBSDC. Regarding fuel, it was the airline industry’s largest expense in 2011, representing 35 percent of total costs. In 2011, the price of jet fuel reached a record high of $3.00 per gallon for the year.

He continued, It is even higher for the first two months of 2012.

Cynthia Brough, director of public relations for AAA, said that as jet fuel costs go up in tandem with gas prices, the consumer could expect to pay more for their flight.

As with any business, if [an airline] pays more for fuel and operational costs, they need to pass that cost on to the consumer, she told CBSDC. There have been [similar] effects in the past.

Though the illegality of price signaling prevents airlines from discussing numbers, Allison Steinberg, senior media analyst for JetBlue Airways, told CBSDC that there are steps taken to try to stave off the potential effects of rising gas prices.

We continue to believe the best tools for managing the impact of fuel expense are operating a fuel-efficient fleet and using efficient operating procedures, such as single engine taxi, she said in an email. In addition, we continue to manage our fuel hedge portfolio as a form of insurance to help mitigate price volatility and protect JetBlue against severe spikes in oil prices.

It may take more extreme measures for airlines to keep up, though. Lott added that, from the year 2000 to the middle of 2011, jet fuel prices rose 268 percent. In that same time period, domestic airfare costs reportedly rose 10 percent.

Fares over the past decade have not kept pace with costs or the price of fuel, he noted.

According to information provided by the AAA National Office to CBSDC, some airlines have already taken such action, replacing larger jets with smaller, regional aircrafts that are more fuel-efficient in nature.

Travel website Expedia.com confirmed that prices have gone up for flights in recent history. However, they additionally stated that ticket sales have increased as well.

Despite the recent rise in gas prices, Expedia sees people still taking to the skies, Jeremy Boore, travel analyst for Expedia.com, said to CBSDC. With regards to flights, on some of the most popular routes, Expedia sees ticket growth outpacing average ticket price growth.

According to their collected data, tickets between Los Angeles International and John F. Kennedy International Airports in the past 28 days have gone up in price by 1.7%, with sales up 14.1% in comparison with the previous 28-day period.

Other popular routes saw similar rises in both cost and consumption.

[T]here is still demand for travel, all things considered, Boore added.

All the same, consumer surveys and data collected last year indicate that some travelers did make the decision to avoid air travel, instead opting to go by car.

American drivers will still have to pay more to vacation, however, statistics offered by the U.S. Energy Information Administration show that, for the week starting Feb. 27, gasoline prices per gallon averaged out at $3.71.

That amount reflects a rise of 13 cents from the previous week, and 33 cents from the same week in 2011.

The past month has also been statistically more expensive at the pump than last February, according to numbers collected by AAA. The data collected and presented by their Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows that on March 1, 2012, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.74. The same time last year, Americans paid just $3.39 per gallon.

The increase in cost can be attributed to a number of things, including dwindling supplies and increasing demand as summer ticks closer and the politics surrounding crude oil acquisition, especially in the Middle East.

Avery Ash, manager of regulatory affairs for AAA, said that gas prices do tend to rise slightly as March begins and winter draws to a close. But the rise seen recently is atypical in size, due to geopolitical influences.

Last year we saw escalating tensions in Libya and northern Africa, and that uncertainty impacted the market most specifically, the removal of Libyan crude from the market, he told CBSDC, adding that this year s recent tensions in Iran have taken their toll as well. This time of year we do see some upward movement, but the last two years have broken the historical norm in the magnitude of the increases.

A combination of pent-up vacation desires and years of experience with balancing personal budgets has helped American travelers enjoy some time away all the same, even if they had to change their approach.

[Travelers] did … budget more wisely, by perhaps visiting national parks for free as opposed to another venue of higher cost, Brough said. They changed the type of travel, but they still traveled.

But as Nancy White, who also directs AAA public relations, observed in their end-of-year holiday travel forecasts from 2011, many Americans will prioritize travel over other expenses, especially if family and friends are involved in the trip.

The heartstrings outweigh the purse strings, she said, quoting a colleague. People will do whatever they need to do to spend time with loved ones, making cuts in other areas of spending to accommodate travel plans.

Frank Sinatra’s dwindling tourist turf in Hoboken

on March 31, 2010 at 2:00 PM, updated March 31, 2010 at 5:12 PM

Hoboken Now reader Richard Weisman posed a good question we felt compelled to answer publicly. He wrote: My mom is a big fan of Frank Sinatra and we wanted to visit the house he lived in when he was in Hoboken. Where is the house located? Also, any other Frank Sinatra highlights in Hoboken?

From The Star-Ledger in 1998: Back in Hoboken, no tour buses go past 415 Monroe St., where Sinatra grew up. That house is long gone, a ghost of Hoboken’s past, like Sinatra himself. There is only a brick arch, built a few years ago by some longtime fans. The Hoboken Sinatra, cocky and raffish, who got his big break with the Tommy Dorsey Band, doesn’t exist anymore.

A bronze star has been embedded in the sidewalk since 1996 and the brick arch still exists. In 2001, Ed Shirak, co-owner of Lepore s Home Made Chocolate and author of Sinatra book Our Way, put $18,000 into a Sinatra museum at that spot – From Here to Eternity: The Museum. The museum closed after five years because it became too much of a burden to maintain.

The museum sign on Monroe, however, is still there, but the best way to get a tour of Sinatra sites in Hoboken is to head to Lepore s, 537 Garden St. Lepore s co-owner Mario Lepore said they still offer guided tours upon request. On average, they give about two tours a month in the spring, summer and fall, he said.

But the tour guides are expecting some unusual participants this summer. A group of 50 people is coming from Pennsylvania in June. An Irish documentary crew is flying in from Dublin in late May to explore how Sinatra s legacy is preserved in modern-day Hoboken, Lepore said.

Lepore s sells Sinatra s favorite chocolate chocolate-covered apricots. The shop also has rare letters written by Sinatra and his wife Barbara.

Hoboken Historical Museum sells Sinatra button and magnets and, in years past, has featured exhibits that paid homage to Hoboken s musical traditions. But the museum s director Robert Foster admits Sinatra-related tourist opportunities are scant.

It s a little dry, said Foster. It s hard for people to maintain a site.

A walking tour map can be purchased at the museum for $1. It ll take you to 23 sites (mostly outdoors), such as Sinatra s three residences 415 Monroe St., 841 Garden St., and 703 Park Ave. as well as AJ Demarest Middle School and the Union Club. Sinatra disciples can check out Dom s Bakery, 506 Grand St., where Sinatra would order bread even when he was living in Beverly Hills, said Foster.

As for restaurants, Piccolo s, 92 Clinton St., has a back room shrine devoted to the singer, and Leo s Grandevous, 200 Grand St., has a jukebox of Sinatra tunes and a collection of photos on the wall.

Frank Sinatra Park, built in 1998, has served as a soccer field overlooking Manhattan from across the river. The pier may receive a $12 million renovation to repair the deterioration caused by wood-eating mollusks.

Lepore said people continue to leave flowers and the occasional Jack Daniels bottle on Sinatra s star on Monroe Street in December. But Hoboken just doesn t canonize Ol Blue Eyes like it used to.

Most of the people from out of town appreciate it more because it s unique to them, Lepore said. He s the greatest singer in American history and he was born in Hoboken, so we want to keep his memory alive in his birthplace. We try to keep it going.

Getting the best high interest savings account #high #interest #online #savings

Best high interest accounts

Ready to compare?

The good news is that since April 2016, the introduction of a new Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) has meant that basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 of savings interest without the taxman taking a slice, and higher rate taxpayers can earn £500. Additional rate taxpayers are not eligible for a PSA.

And the fact you can shelter up to £20,000 from the taxman in cash through an Individual Savings Account (ISA) this tax year is another godsend – as you get to keep every penny of the interest you earn.

Here’s our guide to the best high interest accounts that you can use to grow your savings pot.

Cash ISAs

Cash-ISAs allow you to earn interest tax-free so, it makes sense to max out your ISA allowance before stashing money into a standard savings account.

Since July 1, 2014 you have been able to hold all of your ISA allowance in cash. ISAs have become even more flexible since April 6, 2016. If you hold cash in an either an investment, cash, or Innovative Finance ISA, you can take this cash out of your account and put it back in within the same tax year without this affecting your annual allowance. Not all ISA providers may offer this flexibility, so check with yours before withdrawing any money.

The difference between the best and the worst savings accounts is significant

Current accounts

If you have already used up your ISA allowance, you might think a standard savings account is the next best place for your nest egg.

But these days, the best interest rates can actually be found on some current accounts. Some pay up to 5.00% on smaller balances of a couple of thousand, or 3.00% on balances of up to £20,000.

You usually have to switch your current account completely to benefit from these deals, but the introduction of the Current Account Switch Service in September 2013, means the process is now hassle-free and can be carried out in seven working days.

Easy access accounts

Also known as no-notice accounts, easy access deals give you instant access to your cash whenever you want it. That makes them a great home for emergency cash that you can call on to pay for a broken boiler or car repairs, for example.

The bad news is that interest rates on easy access accounts are generally pretty low – particularly if you don’t shop around for the best deal.

Better-than-average rates are usually reserved for internet-only accounts, while some employ introductory bonuses to boost the advertised rate – but which run out after the first 12 month.

Even if there isn’t a bonus, rates tend to be variable so keep a close eye on what the account is paying and switch deals if it’s no longer any good.

Some accounts that call themselves easy access may also limit the number of withdrawals you can make each year without losing interest – so check this too.

Notice accounts

With notice accounts, you generally have to wait between 30 and 120 days to withdraw your money. This means they won’t be suitable if you need access to your cash in a hurry – as the terms state you will lose interest if an emergency withdrawal is made.

While notice accounts tend to offer higher interest rates than those that provide instant access to your money, this isn’t always the case – so check out easy access rates too before applying.

And as most easy access accounts have variable, rather than fixed, rates, it’s just as important to monitor your returns and switch if the deal is no longer competitive.

Regular savings accounts

Regular savings accounts, which require a set monthly payment – often between £25 and £300 – are a great option for building up savings.

But while rates are higher, the overall benefits are limited as you will only earn interest on the amount in the account as it builds up. You will also be penalised for missing a payment and you won’t have access to your money for the typical12-month term.

Fixed-rate bonds

Fixed-rate bonds are savings accounts that offer a fixed interest rate on your cash for a set period of time, say between one and five years.

The pay-off for giving up access to your money by paying into an account of this kind is that you should receive a higher rate than you will on an easy access or notice account.

And, generally speaking, the longer you’re prepared to lock your cash away for, the higher your return will be.

You will have to pay a penalty should you need to access your money within the term, though.

As most fixed-rate bonds do not allow you to add to your balance, they are also only suitable for people with a lump sum to invest.

Normal Testosterone and Estrogen Levels in Women

It may surprise you to know that men don’t have a monopoly on testosterone. Testosterone belongs to a class of male hormones called androgens. But women also have testosterone.

The ovaries produce both testosterone and estrogen. Relatively small quantities of testosterone are released into your bloodstream by the ovaries and adrenal glands. In addition to being produced by the ovaries, estrogen is also produced by the body’s fat tissue. These sex hormones are involved in the growth, maintenance, and repair of reproductive tissues. But that’s not all. They also influence other body tissues and bone mass.

What are hormones?

A hormone is a chemical substance. It’s secreted by one tissue and travels by way of body fluids to affect another tissue in your body. In essence, hormones are “chemical messengers.” Many hormones, especially those affecting growth and behavior, are significant to both men and women.

The amount and levels of hormones change daily. The sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone, are secreted in short bursts — pulses — which vary from hour to hour and even minute to minute. Hormone release varies between night and day and from one stage of the menstrual cycle to another.

What is estrogen?

Estrogen is an entire class of related hormones that includes estriol, estradiol. and estrone.

Estriol is made from the placenta. It’s produced during pregnancy .

Estradiol is the primary sex hormone of childbearing women. It is formed from developing ovarian follicles. Estradiol is responsible for female characteristics and sexual functioning. Also, estradiol is important to women’s bone health. Estradiol contributes to most gynecologic problems, including endometriosis and fibroids and even female cancers.

Estrone is widespread throughout the body. It is the main estrogen present after menopause .

Why do estrogen levels fall?

There are many reasons why estrogen levels fall, including:

Drugs that block estrogen include clomiphene, which tricks the body into thinking it has decreased levels of estrogen. Also, women experience low levels of estrogen immediately after childbirth and also during breastfeeding .

Continued

Why are athletes at risk for low levels of estrogen?

Women with low body fat often do not produce sufficient amounts of sex hormones. This can be a problem for women such as athletes, models, and gymnasts. It can also be a problem for women with eating disorders. These women can experience a cessation of menstruation. known as amenorrhea. They may also develop osteoporosis — thin bones — and fractures as well as other conditions more common in older women after menopause.

Do estrogen levels fall at menopause?

Yes. Estrogen levels fall at menopause. This is a natural transition for all women between ages 40 and 55. The decline in estrogen can happen abruptly in younger women whose ovaries are removed, resulting in so-called surgical menopause.

Perimenopause is the period of transition before menopause. The first natural decline in estrogen levels starts during this phase. Other physiological changes also start. Women going through perimenopause may experience weight gain along with other menopause symptoms. For instance, there may be irregular menstrual periods, hot flashes. and vaginal dryness .

On average, menopause occurs at age 51. When it does, a woman’s body produces less estrogen and progesterone. The drop of estrogen levels at menopause can cause uncomfortable symptoms, including:

Some women experience moodiness. That may or may not be related to the loss of estrogen. Lower levels of estrogen may also increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. stroke. osteoporosis and fractures .

Why do estrogen levels rise?

During puberty, it’s normal for levels of estrogen to rise. That’s because this hormone fuels changes in a young girl’s body. For example, it plays a role in the development of breasts. a more mature curved figure, fuller hips, and pubic and underarm hair .

In addition, high levels of estrogen are seen in women who are extremely overweight. Estrogen levels rise during a healthy pregnancy, and increased estrogen levels may be seen with tumors of the ovaries, testes, or adrenal glands.

Some drugs, such as steroid medications. ampicillin, estrogen-containing drugs, phenothiazines, and tetracyclines can increase estrogen levels.

Continued

What happens when testosterone levels rise or fall?

If your body produces too much testosterone, you may have irregular or absent menstrual periods. You may also have more body hair than the average woman. Some women with high testosterone levels develop frontal balding. Other possible effects include acne. an enlarged clitoris, increased muscle mass, and deepening of voice.

High levels of testosterone can also lead to infertility and are commonly seen in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is an endocrine condition that is sometimes seen in women of childbearing age who have difficulty getting pregnant. Women with PCOS have symptoms similar to those produced by high testosterone levels. They include:

PCOS is associated with:

As women with PCOS age, the presence of these risk factors increases their risk for heart disease.

At menopause, women experience a decline in testosterone. That decline may be correlated to a reduced libido. Some findings indicate that testosterone replacement therapy may benefit sexual function in certain perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Testosterone replacement is unadvised in women with breast or uterine cancer. It also may increase the chances of cardiovascular disease or liver disease. So, experts are cautious about recommendations.

How do I know if my hormone levels are too high or too low?

Your doctor can do a physical examination and assess your health situation and symptoms to determine if further laboratory tests are needed to check hormone levels. Those tests may be important if you have a health condition such as PCOS or have stopped menstruating because of excessive athletic training or anorexia nervosa. If the tests show abnormal levels of hormones, your doctor can prescribe effective treatment.

Nissan Quest Blower Motor

Troubleshooting Nissan Quest Blower Motor Problems

The Nissan Quest blower motor is a combined unit that is composed of a motor and a fan that looks like a hamster wheel. Its function is to draw air from the outside through the heating and cooling elements, and force hot or cold air through the ducting and interior vents. If you notice that the air circulation is weak or the vents work on one speed, there may a problem with your blower motor. You don’t need to call the mechanic yet. These simple troubleshooting tips will help you determine and maybe fix the blower motor on your Nissan Quest.

The blower motor only works on one speed, usually high

The problem isn’t the fan or the motor, but the resistor. The blower motor resistor controls the speed of the fan (low, high, and mid-range). If the resistor is faulty, the motor bypass the resistor and directly sends power to the blower. As a result, the resistor cannot control the blower speed and you will not be able control it with the A/C switch. Changing the resistor will correct this problem. Refer to the owner’s manual to locate the blower motor resistor. Change the resistor and test the blower motor.

Reduced air movement in all speed settings

Again, the resistor can be blamed for this problem. Since it controls the speed of the blower motor, a faulty blower motor resistor may reduce the amount of airflow at different speed settings. This problem can be solved by replacing the resistor.

The blower motor still doesn’t work correctly even if everything has been replaced

An average DIY mechanic often go for the obvious-and change the resistor or the fuse or replace the entire motor component-if there’s a problem with the blower motor. But if the initial repairs fail, he has nowhere to go. Remember that the system has a ground that is important to complete the circuit. If there’s power at all ranges, but there’s no response from the motor, check the ground. After a while, ground connection can become loose or corroded, resulting in motor malfunction.

Not sure what type of college will be the best fit for your teen?

We will plan a multi-campus itinerary that will let you and your teen explore different types of colleges and universities all based on your teen’s specific educational interests and lifestyle preferences.

Since 2009, Custom College Visits has been privileged to assist teens and families from around the world with their college tours.

Summer college tours can be particularly challenging for parents or teens to organize.

Call us +1 (650) 931-4515 or (800) 930-1701 for a free consultation.

Please scroll down to read what parents say about our college road trip itineraries.

“A friend who is a maven in finding outstanding resources, recommended Janice and Custom College Visits as we began the daunting college selection process. We worked with Janice on two fronts; to help create a list of colleges and to set-up meaningful colleges visits. The college visits were also a lot of fun for us as a family and very informative on so many levels. More importantly Janice helped make the college selection process manageable, not so daunting after all, and we felt no stone was left unturned in this important decision.

Tracy P. Parent of a New York City high school Senior

Thank you so much for planning such a wondrous experience for our son. The careful attention to detail was evident at every turn. Custom College Visits planning effort provided an appropriate path of discovery for our son and for us.

Michael C. New Jersey parent of a high school Junior

Hi Janice, Our trip was a thoroughly enjoyable family adventure! Thank you so much for the unique opportunities that you created for our daughter at each college. Meeting with a student at Harvard, was probably the most informative way to start the entire trip. She devoted a lot of time (in the rain) providing real college life details. She swiped us into dining halls, dorms & buildings that we might not have seen otherwise. The sophomore session at Princeton was wonderful! Thank you so much for everything that you did! We really were able to get the most out of each campus visit! Best, Julie

Julie, Parent of a high school Junior in Southern California

I found working with Custom College Visits a very positive experience. They were able to pinpoint colleges that were best suited for my daughter and the travel plans were well organized. In addition, they were able to set up an interview with a member of a college color guard, as my daughter had expressed interest in going to a school that had a color guard. I am very pleased with my experience with Custom College Visits, and would recommend them highly.

Mark L. Parent of high school junior in Northern California

Lili got accepted into her first choice school today (early decision): Boston University! She is thrilled beyond belief and relieved as well. We could not have done it without your help, it was invaluable. I think the High School Honors program she did there was probably very helpful and we would not have know about it without your forwarding the information to us. You rock! So, I am tipping my hat today to both you and Lili!

Kim T. Parent of high school senior in Kansas

I am happy to tell you that Nivi has been accepted early decision to Brown University. She is the first ivy leaguer in our family and we couldn’t be more proud! Her decision to apply was made easier because of the excellent experience she had during her customized tour via your company so thank you so much! We will be sure to recommend you to our friends here..

Gayathri S. Parent of high school senior Chennai, India

Thank you again for being so good at what you do. Our trip to the US was a huge success. I was on the verge of cancelling the trip but knew I couldn’t let my son down. That I even found you on the internet was a direct answer to my prayer for a miracle. The itinerary worked very well. I knew I was in good hands even before I boarded the plane to the U.S. and your attention to detail far exceeded my expectation.

Egbe O. Parent of international high school student

We had a wonderful trip to Philadelphia and Boston thanks to Janice Caine of Custom College Visits. She worked out an itinerary from start to finish. We visited 9 schools and it was as smooth as possible. Janice worked out tours and information sessions as well as meetings with tennis coaches. We have boy/girl twins and both were happy which is not an easy achievement. Not only did Janice work out the schedule but she recommended great schools in both towns. We would highly recommend her.

Phil S. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

“Thank you SO MUCH for your involvement in the Splash Parents’ Program this weekend! I am just reviewing the feedback forms, and your presentation received rave reviews across the board; many parents cited it as the highlight of the program for them! Some verbatim quotes include: ‘The Planning and Preparing for College Visits was a great eye opener;’ Thank you for all the effort, energy, and enthusiasm you put into making the event such a success.”

Marisa M. Coordinator, Splash Parents’ Program Stanford University

Our college process was two-fold. It began with getting a jump start on the standardized testing, and not waiting until spring of junior year to focus. I believe our outcome was successful because we had a well-managed plan helped along by an expert, Janice Caine, of Custom College Visits.

Lisa L. Parent of high school students SF Bay Area

Happy New Year! Wanted to let you know that Charlie was accepted to Johns Hopkins Early Decision! Great news and very exciting all around. Thank you for all your help.

Beth A. Parent of a high school senior. Massachusetts

Credit and Fixed Income Funds #high #yield #fixed #income #funds

Credit and Fixed Income

Benefit from investments that can deliver capital stability, income and liquidity by investing with one of Australia s leading credit and fixed income managers.

At Perpetual we offer a range of cash, credit and fixed income solutions and are specialists in investing in quality debt. We take a highly active approach to buying and selling credit and fixed income securities and invest extensively across industries, maturities and the capital structure.

We aim to create well-diversified and highly liquid portfolios that perform well across market cycles. We focus on generating income and seek to avoid losses so that portfolio returns are stable.

While some fixed income securities can move in the same direction as share markets, our prudent risk aware approach seeks to provide the defensive attributes investors expect from fixed income such as high levels of capital security, consistent income, liquidity and a low correlation to shares.

Why invest in credit and fixed income?

Improve the predictability of your portfolio

The regular income stream from credit and fixed income investments can provide some predictability and stability to overall returns.

Predictable outcomes

We focus our portfolio on delivering predictable outcomes – capital stability, regular income, and liquidity. These are characteristics that investors generally seek from defensive asset classes.

Risk Aware

We will only add risk to our portfolios when we expect it will be sufficiently rewarded. This ensures that the defensive qualities of our portfolios are not compromised.

Stable and experienced team

Perpetual s experienced credit and fixed income team have delivered through different market cycles, with the senior portfolio managers working together for over a decade. Our current capability set has been built on a strong foundation, with Perpetual managing debt-like portfolios since 1966.

Active trading of quality assets

Perpetual s approach is to actively manage good quality credit and fixed income assets. Quality assets tend to be more liquid, have lower transaction costs, are issued in greater volume, and are more likely to experience spread contraction as they approach maturity. An active risk aware approach can help to add value for investors across the less transparent fixed income markets.

Companies That Offer High Risk Car Insurance Quotes #cheapest #high #risk

#

Companies That Offer High-Risk Car Insurance Quotes

If you’re a driver with a bad record or other circumstances that make you a candidate for “high risk car insurance,” you may be slapped with the label “nonstandard” when you’re getting quotes.

Generally speaking, a nonstandard driver has at least one of the following:

  • A DUI conviction
  • Multiple accidents and/or moving violations
  • Bad credit
  • Lapsed coverage
  • Very little driving experience
  • An exotic vehicle

Elderly drivers, immigrants who lack a U.S. driving record and those who only want minimum auto insurance coverage may also be considered high risk.

If you’re pegged as a nonstandard driver, you won’t be able to get the best rates on car insurance, but you should still have quite a few options.

[Tickets? You might be able to get a better deal by comparing quotes through NerdWallet’s Car Insurance Tool .]

Nonstandard auto insurance companies

Many major carriers will insure nonstandard drivers. In fact, Progressive started out as a high-risk insurer. Large insurance companies often operate a subsidiary intended for drivers with less-than-optimal characteristics. For example, Geico places them with Geico Casualty Co. rather than Geico General or Geico Indemnity.

Other major insurance companies have separately branded subsidiaries that focus on the nonstandard market. Have you seen commercials promising “a great low rate you can get online” from The General? That’s the nonstandard subsidiary of American Family Insurance. Nationwide owns nonstandard insurers Titan and Victoria, and Farmers owns Bristol West.

Nonstandard drivers can also find coverage from smaller companies, such as:

  • Access
  • Affirmative
  • Alliance United
  • Dairyland
  • Direct General
  • Gainsco
  • Infinity
  • Safe Auto
  • United Automobile

The high-risk market is highly fragmented. No single company accounts for more than 10% of premiums, according to ratings agency A.M. Best. But it is highly concentrated geographically, with Texas, California and Florida accounting for 59% of direct nonstandard auto premiums in 2013. No other state accounted for more than 5%.

Sometimes a driver presents such a high risk that he or she can’t qualify for even nonstandard auto insurance. These drivers can turn to state plans designed to serve as insurers of “last resort.” The insurance industry organization AIPSO has a page with links to state plans.

Evaluating the choices

Websites like J.D. Power and Consumer Reports offer customer satisfaction ratings for large insurers such as Geico, Progressive and Allstate, but they don’t have ratings specifically for nonstandard subsidiaries or insurers that offer high-risk car insurance quotes.

Instead, you can turn to the Consumer Information Source from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. It provides details on companies’ financial data, closed upheld consumer complaints and state licensing, and has links to state websites where you can check for enforcement actions and market conduct examination reports. You can also consult financial strength ratings from A.M. Best to make sure you don’t choose a company that’s at risk of going under.

To get high-risk car insurance quotes, contact an insurance agent or go directly to company websites. If you have questions, NerdWallet’s advisor network includes insurance agents.

Consider multiple ratings sources and compare companies’ prices before making a decision.

Finally, keep in mind that you’re probably not going to be a nonstandard driver forever. Accidents and tickets generally stay on your record for three years, while DUI convictions usually remain on your record for up to five years. Ask your agent when you’ll be able to get car insurance quotes from the standard market again.

Why are airfare prices so high, despite low oil prices?

Nov 30, 15 1:56 pm by LarryJ

Because the airplane’s are (nearly) full. A business does not lower prices when they are already selling out their supply of product.

The way that lower costs lead to reduced fares is that airlines will add more capacity (they already are doing so) due to the lower costs. When this additional capacity comes online the fares will drop to keep it (nearly) full.

A restaurant or supermarket can make quick adjustments in supply when their costs, or market demand, changes. It takes a lot of time and money to acquire new (or used) airplanes or to economically remove aircraft from service. New aircraft also come with long-term commitments so an airline must be convinced that it will be able to deploy the new capacity profitably for the duration of that commitment.

In the case of current fuel prices, there isn’t any guarantee that the current low prices will last for an extended period of time. In fact, the chances are good that fuel will be significantly more expensive than today when any aircraft ordered today are delivered.

Bond funds – May #bond #funds, #u.s. #government #bonds, #high #yield

#

Bond funds

U.S. government bond funds

These funds invest primarily in bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury or federal government agencies, which means you don’t have to worry about credit risk. But because of their higher level of safety, their yields and total returns tend to be slightly lower than those of other bond funds.

That’s not to say government bonds funds don’t fluctuate — they do, right along with interest rates. If you can’t tolerate swings of more than a few percentage points, stick to short-term government bond funds. If you’re willing to take on a little more risk, then you can pick up a bit more yield with intermediate government bond funds. If you plan on holding on for several years and can handle broader swings, long-term government bond funds will provide even more yield.

Corporate bond funds

Funds in this category buy the bonds issued by corporations.

When researching corporate bonds funds, consider the credit quality of the individual bonds they hold (most hold highly rated bonds, AAA to A minus or A3, but some take more risk by adding small doses of high-yielding junk bonds.) Also consider the average maturity of the bonds — the longer the average maturity, the greater the volatility.

High-yield bond funds

Also known as junk bond funds, high-yield funds invest in debt of fledgling or small firms whose staying power is untested as well as in the bonds of large, well-known companies in weakened financial condition.

The potential for these companies to default on their interest payments is much greater than on higher quality bonds, but since they usually hold more than 100 issues, a default here and there won’t capsize the fund.

There is more risk, however, and for that, you get higher yields — from 3 to as much as 10 percentage points more than safer bond funds. These funds tend to shine when the economy is on a roll, and suffer when the economy is fading (increasing the chance of default).

Municipal bond funds

Tax-exempt bond funds — also known as muni bond funds — invest in the bonds issued by cities, states, and other local government entities. As a result, they generate dividends that are free from federal income taxes.

The income from muni bond funds that invest only in the issues of a single state is also exempt from state and local taxes for resident shareholders. Once you factor in the tax benefits, muni funds often offer better yields than government and corporate funds.

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs – CBS DC #travel

Why cut a hole in the roof when you can put a smart Bard wall-mount unit on the side of your commercial building instead? Bard s vertical package wall-mount systems feature more enhancements than typical rooftop units, including patented features such as factory or field-installed ventilation options and control modules. Our vertical wall-mount units operate in the normal ambient environment, meaning much higher energy savings and a significant increase in economizer hours.

The Bard way is the smarter way to cool your building. Why put an HVAC unit on the roofs where they are hard to service, cause leaks and are subjected to severe and extreme heat? Bard wall-mount units offer everything a rooftop unit does, but in a much smarter and more efficient manner. Taking your air conditioner off of your roof can save you money and significantly increase equipment lifespan of your equipment.

Bard units are known industry-wide to be among the most reliable and easiest to maintain HVAC systems available. Bard engineers always design our units with the HVAC pros in mind, making accessibility and diagnosis one of our top design goals. When it comes to matching today’s highest efficiency requirements with yesterday’s durability, no one does it better than Bard.

High Availability #high #availability #architecture

#

High Availability

As more and more mission-critical applications move on the Internet, providing highly available services becomes increasingly important. One of the advantages of a clustered system is that it has hardware and software redundancy, because the cluster system consists of a number of independent nodes, and each node runs a copy of operating system and application software. High availability can be achieved by detecting node or daemon failures and reconfiguring the system appropriately, so that the workload can be taken over by the remaining nodes in the cluster.

In fact, high availability is a big field. An advanced highly available system may have a reliable group communication sub-system, membership management, quoram sub-systems, concurrent control sub-system and so on. There must be a lot of work to do. However, we can use some existing software packages to construct highly available LVS cluster systems now.

Working Principle

In general, there are service monitor daemons running on the load balancer to check server health periodically, as illustrated in the figure of LVS high availability. If there is no response for service access request or ICMP ECHO_REQUEST from a server in a specified time, the service monitor will consider the server is dead and remove it from the available server list at the load balancer, thus no new requests will be sent to this dead server. When the service monitor detects the dead server has recovered to work, the service monitor will add the server back to the available server list. Therefore, the load balancer can automatically mask the failure of service daemons or servers. Furthermore, administrators can also use system tools to add new servers to increase the system throughput or remove servers for system maintenance, without bringing down the whole system service.

Now the load balancer might become a single failure point of the whole system. In order to prevent the whole system from being out of service because of the load balancer failure, we need setup a backup (or several backups) of the load balancer. Two heartbeat daemons run on the primary and the backup respectively, they heartbeat the message like “I’m alive” each other through serial lines and/or network interfaces periodically. When the heartbeat daemon of the backup cannot hear the heartbeat message from the primary in the specified time, it will take over the virtual IP address to provide the load-balancing service. When the failed load balancer comes back to work, there are two solutions, one is that it becomes the backup load balancer automatically, the other is the active load balancer releases the VIP address, and the recover one takes over the VIP address and becomes the primary load balancer again.

The primary load balancer has state of connections, i.e. which server the connection is forwarded to. If the backup load balancer takes over without those connections information, the clients have to send their requests again to access service. In order to make load balancer failover transparent to client applications, we implement connection synchronization in IPVS, the primary IPVS load balancer synchronizes connection information to the backup load balancers through UDP multicast. When the backup load balancer takes over after the primary one fails, the backup load balancer will have the state of most connections, so that almost all connections can continue to access the service through the backup load balancer.

The availability of database, network file system or distributed file system is not addressed here.

Working Examples

There are several software packages in conjuction with LVS to provide high availability of the whole system, such as Red Hat Piranha, Keepalived, UltraMonkey, heartbeat plus ldirectord, and heartbeat plus mon.

The following examples of building highly available LVS systems are only for reference.

There must be many other methods to build highly available LVS systems, please drop me a message if you have your methods.

High Gas Prices Raising Airline Ticket Costs – CBS DC #buy

Residential Locks – Locksmith New York #new #york #locksmith, #metropolitan #locksmith,

Locksmith Services

When locks needs to be changed; due to theft, personnel policy, loss of a key, there s no time to waste. Fortunately, Metropolitan Locksmith provides 24-hour service to any location in the New York Metropolitan area.

In addition, the most common cause of unauthorized entry through a locked door is by using a duplicate key. Standard keys to your property can be made on demand in countless places. Our suggestion is to replace standard locks with high security products by Mul-t-lock because each Mul-t-lock key has a personal identification card that prevents duplication without the property residents permission.

Protecting your facility has grown increasingly more challenging during the last few years. The new breed of security threats is more immediate than ever before, increasing the risk of a serious security breach and exposing your institution to dangerous liability problems. Chances are unauthorized duplicate keys are infiltrating your security system, despite your efforts to control them.

We are dedicated to the professionalism and excellence of our trade. We service all of New York City, and keep a large inventory of locks and security products.

Early Childhood Special Education

What is Early Intervention?

Supports and services delivered to infants and toddlers from birth through age three who are not developing as expected or who have a medical condition that can delay normal development. Early intervention supports and services focus on increasing the child’s participation in family and community activities that are important to the family. In addition, supports and services focus on helping parents and other caregivers know how to find ways to help the child learn during everyday activities. These supports and services are available for all eligible children and their families regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Early Intervention Services are provided by the local Infant Toddler Connection program .

What is Early Childhood Special Education?

Services delivered to preschool aged children from age two (whose birthday falls on or before September 30) through five who experience a disability and require special education. Educators, along with the child’s family, develop an individualized education program (IEP) with goals and objectives to meet the child’s developmental needs. The goals and objectives include a variety of skills and/or activities for the child to learn and use consistently.

Early Childhood Special Education (Part B of IDEA) and Early Intervention (Part C of IDEA), in Virginia, provide services for children from birth to Kindergarten age who qualify according to state and federal law. All localities in the state have services available for children in this age group who are eligible.

Early Intervention services are provided for infants and toddlers with a disability. Infant and toddler with a disability means a child who is eligible to receive services in the Part C early intervention system up to age three who:

  • has delayed functioning;
  • manifests atypical development or behavior;
  • has behavioral disorders that interfere with acquisition of developmental skills; or
  • has a diagnosed physical or mental condition that has a high probability of resulting in delay, even though no current delay exists. COV § 2.1-760; 34 CFR § 303.16 (a).

Preschool aged children from age two (whose birthday falls on or before September 30) through five with a disability may be found eligible for Early Childhood Special Education services under one or more of 14 disability categories, which are defined in the federal and state regulations:

  • autism
  • deaf-blind
  • emotional disability
  • hearing impairment
  • learning disability
  • intellectual disability
  • multiple disabilities
  • orthopedic impairment
  • other health impairment
  • speech or language impairment
  • traumatic brain injury
  • visual impairment / blindness
  • developmental delay

The long term goal for our preschool aged children is for them to be as ready as possible to enter kindergarten. The earlier services are provided for children with disabilities, the better the long term prognosis. Children with special needs who have experienced support early in life do better in future settings.

Smooth transitions from early intervention to early childhood special education and then into Kindergarten are important. Families, children, sending, and receiving programs all need to share information and support each other. Transition activities need to be timely to assure access to appropriate services for the child. The transition should also be smooth and seamless between programs, people, and services.

Early Childhood Special Education services are provided by local school divisions. Local school divisions’ Special Education Departments should be contacted for specific information about their programs see the public school division directory .

Additional resources are available for Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) leaders responsible for administrative oversight of local ECSE programs. The Leadership in Effective And Developmentally-appropriate Services in ECSE (LEADS) website provides consistent information statewide to improve the collection, reporting, and use of ECSE indicator data; and connect, support, and empower local leaders to build capacity and provide high-quality programs and services throughout the state for young children ages 2-5 years with IEPs.
