Major storm expected to snarl Northeast holiday travel. #budget #travel #magazine

#holiday travel
#

Story highlights

Rain or snow expected to cause travel problems in the Northeast Tuesday, Wednesday “I-95 corridor may end up being the dividing line” between snow, rain, meteorologist says American Airlines is waiving rebooking charges for travelers using 18 Northeastern airports AAA expects 46 million people to travel over Thanksgiving, most since 2007

If you’re heading to the Northeast for Thanksgiving, you might want to get an early start.

A nor’easter is expected to pour heavy rain or snow on that part of the United States late Tuesday and cause problems on Wednesday, traditionally the busiest travel day of the year, CNN meteorologists say.

“All of the major metro areas in the Northeast will be impacted by either heavy rain or heavy snow, along with high winds,” said CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen.

He said it’s too early to predict which metro areas will be hit hardest, but airport delays are predicted Wednesday in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C.

“The I-95 corridor may end up being the dividing line between heavy snow and heavy rain,” Hennen said. “Either way travel in the Northeast will become dangerous, especially interior sections of the Northeast with heavy snow.”

Now s the time to get the cheapest holiday airline tickets

#discount airline ticket
#

The best time to book your holiday flight is.

If you’re planning on flying over the holidays, now’s the time book your tickets.

The report, which was based on ticket sales between January 2013 through July 2014, also found Sunday is the cheapest day to buy plane tickets. This Sunday marks nine weeks until Christmas week, so the clock is ticking.

“It’s about time we stop believing in the airfare voodoo that Tuesday is the best day to get good ticket prices,” said George Hobica, president of Airfarewatchdog.com. The average domestic fare paid on a Sunday is $71 cheaper than on a Monday, the most expensive day, the report showed.

Getting a deal on holiday travel is always hard, but maybe even more so this year, according to Keith Nowak from Travelocity. He said supply and demand is in full effect, giving airlines the pricing power.

Passengers are flying more this year than in the recent past, but airlines aren’t adding more seats, he said. “You’ve got passenger loads growing faster than seats being added. It’s clear given the current load factors, holiday planes are going to be full.”

The most recent data from the Department of Transportation showed the number of domestic fliers in July was the highest since the end of the recession. U.S. airlines carried 385 million passengers, up 2.1% from 2013.

Here are four expert tips to snag the best deals this holiday season:

Book early. Booking early doesn’t always mean better prices, but you’re more likely to get the flight and seat you want, especially given the expected high demand.

It’s all about value, said Hobica. “You can get a good deal on an ugly, ill-fitting cashmere sweater, or you can pay a little more and get what you want. Flying out at the crack of dawn, jammed in a middle seat is the ugly sweater.”

Be flexible with dates, airports. Put in multiple nearby airports and try different arrival and departure dates when searching for flights.

“You want to open up as many fare options as possible to increase your chances of finding the best deal,” said Nowak.

And it’s not just about the ticket price. “Smaller airports might have significantly lower parking prices. If you’re gone for a week, that can be a lot of savings,” he said.

Be persistent. Travelers can hold seats for up to 24 hours without purchasing them with most airlines now, said Hobica, which can make a plane appear fuller than it is and discourage potential fliers.

“People hold seats and then release them. Keep checking the flight, you never know when something might open up.”

Travel on the holiday. Flying on the actual holiday tends to bring lower prices. “If you fly late Christmas Eve, on Christmas Day or on January 1, those are always the cheapest days and times to fly,” said Hobica.

Consider Europe. If visiting grandma in the states isn’t a requirement, travelers can find cheap affair to Europe right now, said Hobica.

“And if you are in the mood to splurge, business class seats are 50-60% cheaper to Europe during the holidays.”

Four Places to Look for Holiday Deals on Airfare

Impacting Travel

Airlines are a strange breed when it comes to Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday deals. They want in on the offers, of course, but they have been stingy in not announcing what their sales are ahead of time.

Maybe that s just part of the allure, but we figured it would be helpful to drop a few tips on you in case you want to give your loved one(s) a trip for the holidays.

Note that of the two days, Cyber Monday is often the better deal for airlines. According to a story in the Miami Herald, Last year Cyber Monday triggered a fourfold increase in worldwide flight bookings, according to research by Sojern, a data-marketing company that expects November bookings to skyrocket again this year.

1) CHECK THE WEBSITES Airlines love to put their deals up on their own websites, so this is a logical first step. Alaska Airlines website is advertising a deal right now with flights starting at $59. Starting Sunday, Nov. 29, and continuing into Cyber Monday, Fiji Airways is offering up to 40 percent off round-trip flights to Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. Here are the websites for most of the major airlines:

Holiday Autos – Compare Cheap Car Hire #dynasty #travel

#cheap cars rental
#

We search 1,500 car rental companies to find you the best price

What our customers are saying

provided by Trustpilot

I’ve used Holiday Autos to book cars for the last few years. Seems a remarkably easy way to get a better deal than messing around checking lots of sites.

Meyrick C. United Kingdom

The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time. Booking with Holiday Autos was easy and I received the car that I had asked for, just perfect!

Hired a 4×4 (Nissan X-Trail) from Holiday Autos for our 3 week holiday in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. The car (from Thrifty) was ready for us on time when we arrived at Durban Airport and booking was quick and simple. Real value for money.

We collected the car from the airport with no problems at all. A very nice car, excellent to drive and very economical on fuel. The people from the car hire company were very pleasant and helpful. Return no problem either – very good all round.

Documentation and arrangements as good as ever. Last year the hire company sprang a post-hire late charge on my credit card, Holiday Autos followed this up and I received a full refund. That’s good service.

5 Cheap International Holiday Destinations – Frugal Travel #cheap #t?ckets

#cheap travel destinations

5 Cheap International Holiday Destinations

We all love going on holiday, but spending thousands of dollars on a trip to a popular international destination may not always be achievable. It is possible, however, to have a great international holiday which fits within your budget if you choose your destination carefully. Read on to find out about some of the best budget destinations worldwide.

Beijing, China

Last week, I headed to Beijing. I got myself a really decently priced flight for just over $300 from London with Aeroflot, packed my bags and headed off. Accommodation in the capital is reasonably priced, but its in your day-to-day activities that you’ll see the most savings. On a budget of $80 per day for 2 people, we managed to see all the sites, dine out in exclusive restaurants and have enough left over for shopping. A 15 minute taxi ride in Beijing costs you about $2.5 – unheard of in the west – and a meal for 2 in a western chain about $15. A 3 course dinner in a fancy Persian restaurant in vibrant Sanlitun came to just $30, and a Mojito in cool Hou Hai bar area is $3. Entrance into many attractions is either free (for example the great Military Museum) or very cheap – the most expensive we found was the CCTV tower which came to about $10 each. With these sorts of cheap living costs you’ll have plenty of money to head to the famous Silk Street market to pick up all sorts of bargains on clothes and fabrics.

Eastern Europe

It’s not as cheap as it once was, but it’s still possible to do Eastern Europe on a budget. While some destinations like Krakow and Prague are begining to catch on that there is money to be made from tourists – I paid $12 for coffee and a croissant in the Market Square in Krakow –  there are gems to be found even further east. Sarajevo and Belgrade are two excellent locations with low prices for accommodation and dining out and a raw history ready to be explored. The cheap flights to Eastern Europe offered by many budget carriers have been a blessing, so head further east to Bosnia, Serbia, Romania and the Ukraine to get the best of the bargains before they go the way of Poland, Czech Republic and the Baltics by raising their prices to reflect the growing tourist industry.

Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Tunisia

If you’re not fussed on accommodation, location, dates and culture then you can get some of the cheapest and best deals online. With a little flexibility, I’ve managed a week in the Algarve for a stunning $120, and 5 days north of Barcelona for $160. I’ve taken a deal to Agadir in Morocco for $250, ditched the hotel after a few days and headed on the bus to Marrakech for half the cost of a normal flight. This idea isn’t for everyone, as these deals are based on limited flight choices, out of the way resorts and normally 2 or 3* accommodation. But if you’re looking at a week in the sun and live near a major airport this is a great way to get a last minute deal. Try icelolly.com for the best cheap deals, and remember not to expect too much accommodation wise, and be prepared to be slightly out of the way from the main tourist attractions.

Thailand

A long term favourite, Thailand offers great savings in some of the cheaper resorts. Local transport costs next to nothing, food is delicious and cheap, and the services provided are second to none. Get yourself a massage for $5, and dine out on local specialities for under $10. A major benefit is the bed and breakfasts or guest houses in the country where you can still find rooms for as little as $10 for a decent room. Local sightseeing can be pricey in some of the tourist areas, but off the track you’ll find fantastic savings, souvenirs and friendly locals.

Working for a Holiday Travel Company – Working Abroad Magazine #southall

#travel rep
#

Working for a Holiday Travel Company

The best way to prepare for life as a holiday rep is to have some idea of their workplace which is why many reps have holidayed with their employers before as tourists.

Jack Kimber works as a Youth Rep for 2wentys in the Crete resort of Malia he was inspired to apply for the job after going on holiday with them. He said: I applied for a job when I got home I have always wanted to work abroad and I love partying. 2wenty s application process is quite simple: after applying, Jack attended an interview and had a weeks training before flying out to his resort at the start of the summer season.

Travel and Holiday Rep Jobs Abroad

He loves his job, and is quick to sing its praises: It s the best job in the world a once in a lifetime opportunity! I spend my days looking after the young people who come on our holidays and organising excursions, and it s very social as you spend all day and night with the guests.

Daily flexibility is vital: it is not unusual to stay up until 5am seeing customers safely on their plane home, only to be needed at 10.30am welcome meetings for new guests. This grueling schedule makes days off a chance to relax. Jack said: We can get very tired sometimes, so spend most of our time off sleeping or chilling out, but with one and a half days off a week we could do sightseeing.

The unique demands of catering for adults under 30 make the role of Youth Rep both rewarding and challenging: The best bit is getting to meet loads of new people and entertaining all the guests. The worst parts are the long hours, late night airport pick-ups and drop-offs and being really tired.

Luckily, staff perks compensate the low basic wage : free accommodation and transport, as well as the opportunities for good bonuses and commission.

But the social side of the job does not only apply to the resort reps and guests can keep in touch after a season ends via the social networking site 2wentysworld.co.uk, reliving the good times, organising reunions and planning out next year s holidays. Youth Rep is rarely a job for life and most reps see it as casual employment, but it is possible forge a career with the company if you are determined.

Outdoorsy types might prefer campsites to hotels. Jim Rideout joined Canvas Holidays as a Camp Courier in 2005 after hearing about vacancies during his holiday. The role is similar to a holiday rep as your main concern is customer care, such as meeting and greeting, visiting them regularly, providing local area information and reception duties. You are also responsible for cleaning accommodation between customers and basic maintenance and administrative work on the site. The camping season runs from March to October and Canvas have sites in nine European countries including France, Italy, Holland and Sardinia.

At season bookends, teams of couriers are involved in montage – setting up campsites at the beginning of the season, and cleaning and preparing tents and mobile homes for the first customers. Demontage means getting the sites ready for winter by emptying and disassembling tents and storing equipment over the closed season.

Camp Couriers usually start at 9am, staffing reception for the first half an hour or start cleaning straightaway.  Cleaning can last up to five hours depending on how many customers arrive. If you are on arrivals duty you must meet and greet customers between 4pm and 8pm, and in the evening you visit customers to see if they need anything. Night shifts are occasionally necessary but this does not involve staying up all hours just being the first point of contact for any customer in trouble.

Canvas employs workers of all ages for a minimum of six weeks, and Camp Couriers can work alone or in pairs, making it ideal for a couple who want to work abroad together. Jim said: My wife and I intended applying after retiring but we decided I should try it on my own first. I wouldn t have missed my two seasons for anything it was an experience never to be forgotten.

Wannabe Camp Couriers can contact Canvas through their website www.canvasholidays.co.uk/about-us/recruitment-873-0.aspx/ and successful applicants are invited to a group interview. You must be over 18, with a UK bank account and national insurance number. Any previous customer service or travel industry experience is useful and language skills are definitely a bonus. Accommodation (a tent or mobile home), equipment, gas and electricity are all provided so your wages only need to pay for food and leisure. You get one day off per week plus an extra day off each month, so there is plenty of time to explore the surrounding countryside.

Jim said: The best things are making new friends, meeting and getting to know customers, being abroad and learning a new language, or improving existing language skills. If you enjoy cleaning there s plenty of opportunity for fulfillment!

The downsides are coping with customer complaints outside your control and the European heat!

Again, the roles are seasonal and some people return every year, working the winter ski season in between. Jim, who now works in Site Operations for Canvas, said: People do make a career of it and Canvas Holidays is always happy to promote people who make the grade within the company either to more senior courier positions (ultimately to Area Manager) or to head office.

Holiday reps are usually employed in short-haul package holiday resorts, but it is possible to work in long-haul destinations too. Kuoni specialises in exotic, luxurious and activity holidays and although most reps are employed locally, they have a small team of British Overseas Travel Reps too.

Because the resorts are long haul, potential reps need to be experienced at working alone and away from their families for a long time. Jemma Purvis, Kuoni s PR Assistant, said: At Kuoni we pride ourselves in customer service, and look for applicants that portray a professional image, whilst taking care of our clients needs. Resorts are often in remote locations and reps need to demonstrate the ability to think on their feet, respond to problems quickly and effectively. They will be required to make informed decisions based on their own initiative. Sales experience is beneficial, and someone that has lived away from home before is also desirable.

Kuoni recruits in January and February and reps are employed seasonally but tend to stay for several years so there is a low staff turnover. As a result, they accept CVs throughout the year and keep candidates on file for when a vacancy arises. The summer season lasts between four and six months depending on country and the winter season is split into two three-month blocks. Reps choose to work one of these blocks and have the other three months as holiday.

Overseas Travel Reps have similar tasks to all holiday reps they are the first point of contact for their customers. Meeting and greeting, welcome meetings, assisting with enquiries, airport duties and transfers, problem solving and checking bookings with agents and hoteliers are everyday responsibilities, as well as dealing with emergencies and crises as they happen.

You would be on call constantly with this job, but arrange your own time off around arrivals. As you would expect, accommodation is provided, but with Kuoni so is food, flights and visas! Reps attend a week long training course in the UK then two weeks training at their destination, as well as regular sessions throughout the season. Working for Kuoni is not suitable for inexperienced applicants, but seasoned reps who want to see the world could thrive on new challenges.

Jemma said: I would recommend the experience of being a representative overseas to anyone that enjoys being around people and wants to make a difference to our clients overall holiday experience. You will meet some wonderful people, visit some fantastic destinations, and really open your eyes to the world.

Using holiday rep work as a stepping-stone is a great way to build up contacts and experience for a long-term career. As it is easy to burn out after an exhausting few seasons, many reps move into less hectic roles. This does not mean returning to Britain for a desk job far from it. As we have seen, skilled reps are eligible for more demanding and responsible roles further afield. Resort management or PR roles abroad need experienced applicants to fill them, and a few seasons repping gives you an edge over others.

Alternatively, UK-based head office jobs are often filled by ex-reps who want a stable lifestyle, so the choice is yours. One thing is for certain in a role renowned for its long hours and repetitive schedules, no two days will be the same!

Working Holiday Maker Program

Planning to stay and work while you’re visiting Australia?

Planning to stay and work while you’re visiting Australia?

If you’re aged between 18 and 30 and hold a passport for a country or region participating in Australia’s Working Holiday Maker programme, you may be eligible to apply for a 12-month visa which enables you to work in Australia while you are here.

The Australian Government’s Working Holiday Maker Programme, which includes the Working Holiday visa and the Work and Holiday visa, is a cultural exchange programme which enables young travellers to have an extended holiday and earn money through short-term employment. If you work in Australia’s regional areas, in certain circumstances you may even be able to extend your stay for an additional 12 months.

The Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection manages all permanent and temporary immigration matters for Australia including visa applications. Their website will tell you everything you need to know about how the Working Holiday Maker programme works, participating countries, the type of visa you need to enter Australia, your eligibility and obligations and how to apply: www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work

The Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462)

The Working Holiday Maker programme has two types of visas: Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) and Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462) depending on your country of residence. See below for lists of countries eligible for each visa.

If you intend to participate in Australia’s Working Holiday Maker programme, you must apply for your visa before you arrive. These types of visas allow you to stay and work in Australia in all types of full-time, part-time, casual, shift and voluntary work for up to 12 months. You can leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid.

You can also study for a maximum of four months in Australia in addition to working during your holiday.

You will need to meet certain health, character and financial requirements and declare that you will respect Australian values and obey Australian laws before a visa is granted. You should also have a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia. Health insurance from your own country is also recommended.

The Working Holiday Maker programme is not suitable for those seeking permanent employment or full-time study in Australia. If your primary reason for coming to Australia is to seek employment or study you should enquire about a business visa or student visa which may better suit your needs.

Read the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection visa requirements carefully to determine your eligibility and obligations before you apply. There is a non-refundable charge when you lodge your visa application.

Which visa should I apply for?

Travel Soon Holidays – Holiday Travel Forum #around #the #world #travel

Hi I bookes an all-inclusive Holiday with Travelsoon on the Internet – On arrival in Cyprus Papos we were take to Eleni Holiday Village, and the duty manger told us we were not on his guest list?

He said they do it all the time.

He took our accommodation voucher and rang the number on the voucher, after half an hour he said I have found somewhere you can stay, we asked why we can not stay at the Eleni Village, and he said we are Full.

He said the agents just take the bookings then hope they can accommodate the bookings.

A cab took us to the Paffian Sun Holiday Village.

On arrival we asked who sent us here and to check we will not get an extra bill etc-

We were told they did not know who sent us here and did not know anything regarding our situation apart from we can stay at their Holiday Village as an All-Inclusive Guest?

Next day we again asked if the reception could get us in touch with the organisers who sent us to the Pafian Sun, they said they did not know who to contact, and due to the Eleni Village Duty Manager keeping our accommodation voucher. of what we thought he needed to cross charge our stay at the other Holiday Village, we had no contact details, and we had no one at home to get copy s off our computer etc,All so we were on holiday and did not need the stress of chasing why and how etc. until we got home –

We did ask a Thomas Cook Repmat out Venus if they had any dealings or knew how to contact Travelsoon, but we were told they have not heard of them?

On return we have had been trying tto get an answer since last early October 2012- as to why we were miss sold a holiday package and each time we send a letter to them it takes a month to reply or more-

We wer also told ournhold luggage would be £30 pound a bag when we confirmed we need two bags it went up to £55 .50 per bag.

We ask as to who got the extra money above the £39 pound and to date refuse to reply on that point.

I m About to report my situation regarding Travelsoon and Bedwithease – too the two local offices of Fairtrading and to Abta-

Also to the TV programme on Rip-Off Holidays that runs several times a year.

If you are interested, we could share our experience s and try to stop firms mugging normal people.

And hide behind e/mails-

    On Holiday Group enters administration

Bed bank and online retailer On Holiday Group has entered administration with forward bookings worth £19 million.

Discussions with another bed bank to take on On Holiday Group’s bookings broke down last night and staff were due to be informed this morning that the business was to close.

Steve Endacott, founder of the On Holiday Group, said the hoped-for deal with another bed bank “would have minimised disruption to customers and On Holiday Group’s travel agency partners”.

But he added: “However, we are saddened to report that only one bed bank was willing to complete a deal to help their travel agency partners.

“Unfortunately, the deal floundered last night because of deliberate and inaccurate leaks to the Spanish press along with legal complexities relating to the client account.”

The collapse of On Holiday Group is expected to leave its creditors, primarily overseas hotels, with unpaid debts of at least £7 million.

Endacott said monies received from agents were being held in ring-fenced client accounts and would be returned in the next few days.

However, clients will have to pay their bills in-resort and claim refunds from agents.

“I am absolutely gutted and deeply sorry to have to have to tell 65 people that they will lose their jobs, unless the administrator can find a buyer willing to take them on in the next few weeks,” said Endacott.

On Holiday Group’s trading partner Euro Rooms Direct has also stopped taking forward bookings.

Endacott’s other investments, including Holiday Taxis, Rock Insurance, CWT Digital, Internet Travel and Luggage Mule, are not affected.

One of the pioneering dynamic packaging specialists of the last decade, On Holiday Group was set up in 2003 by Endacott, previously Airtours commercial director and MyTravel tour operations managing director.

The group of businesses included hotel booking website Holiday Nights, as well as Fresh Holidays, 118 Travel, flightandhotel.co.uk and PortAventura Holidays. It also operated Spanish hotel booking site reserva123.com.

The company was a member of the Midcounties Co-operative consortium and operated under its Atol licence, and these websites continue to trade.

On Holiday Group struck a deal with Midcounties in 2012 to create dynamic packaging brand Co-op Recommends offering exclusive deals.

Holiday Travel Tips for Safe Holiday Travel

The holidays are steeped in family traditions – opening presents at first light on Christmas Day, napping during the football game on Thanksgiving, lighting the menorah during Hanukkah, inching the car through a traffic jam on the interstate and standing in an airport line that just doesn’t move.

    holiday travel

happiness and minimize coal-in-the-stocking grief, follow these helpful

    holiday travel tips

compiled by ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents). Some of the most travel-wise people in the world, ASTA members know the secrets that will help you and your family arrive at Grandma’s house full of holiday cheer.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas – Before the Holiday Travel Begins

Contact a travel agent well in advance of your trip to secure the lowest-priced airline seats, hotel rooms and rental cars that usually sell out quickly for holiday travel. Be aware that prices generally escalate during the holiday season, as demand is higher.

Packing light saves time and energy when it comes to filling the trunk with fragile bags packed with gifts or racing to fill the last empty space in the overhead bin. Some airlines place special restrictions during the holidays and allow only one carry-on, so less luggage is vital. For detailed tips on how to pack wisely, click here .

    One

    holiday travel tip

for packing lighter is to ship your gifts to your destination ahead of time. Allow at least two to three weeks for your package to arrive, for the holidays are hectic times for courier services like UPS and Federal Express.

Before leaving, be sure to secure your house. Lock all doors and windows, and don’t forget to set the alarm. Also, give your home that lived-in look to repel potential burglars by having a friend collect your mail, setting lights on timers and not leaving details of your trip on the answering machine.

Now Dasher, Now Dancer – Flying During the Holidays

Without a sleigh and eight reindeer, your holiday travel plans will most likely bring you, and millions of others, to the airport. But fear not – with a few precautions and a little TravelSense, your pre-flight schedule will be absent of anxiety.

First, avoid peak travel days. As your travel agent will tell you, the busiest days to fly are those immediately before and after the actual holidays. Book your flights two days before and after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

Your travel agent can secure you a non-stop flight, or one involving the fewest connections and stops. Every time your plane touches the ground during peak travel times, the possibility of delays due to inclement weather or air-traffic problems increases. Also, aim to book morning flights, which tend to be delayed less often than afternoon departures.

If possible, have a friend drive you to the airport, or take a shuttle or public transportation. Shuttle services generally pick up guests early to ensure a timely arrival. If you drive and park at the airport lot, do not leave any valuables, such as CDs, or GPSs in plain view. Also remember to put jumper cables in the trunk in case the battery dies during your trip.

Take the worry of getting to the airport completely out of the equation by staying at an airport hotel the night before an early flight. The additional sleep is well worth it. In some cases, hotels will allow guests to leave their car in the hotel lot for the duration of their trip, so make a few calls to discover which hotels offer this valuable service.

As flights are sometimes overbooked during the holidays, it’s critical to check in early. Domestic travelers should arrive at the airport two hours prior to departure, while international travelers should arrive three hours in advance. Spending an idle hour in the gift shop is much more fun than missing your flight by ten minutes.

If you do not send your gifts ahead, then do not wrap them before the flight. With safety a priority for all airlines, security personnel will need access to all items. Pack collapsible gift bags to be used as wrapping upon arrival.

Keep a positive attitude, but also be mentally ready for setbacks. Delays happen, and airlines do the best they can to keep their schedules on time. Bring water and snacks, an inflatable pillow and eye mask, a good book, your favorite CDs, MP3 player and a deck of cards. Boredom is the true enemy in these situations, so be prepared to conquer it!

Turkeys Can’t Fly – Holiday driving Tips for Navigating the Open Road

Most Americans tend not to stray too far from their family’s roots, making long drives on the interstate an integral part of the holiday ritual.

The first step to ensure a smooth car trip is to keep your car in good working order. As temperatures drop during November and December, being stuck on the side of the road while waiting for an overworked tow-truck driver is not the place to be. Before you leave, have a qualified mechanic check all the car’s vitals: brakes, battery, fluid levels, tire pressure, light bulbs and any parts that need regular maintenance.

As with all long-distance winter road trips, it’s wise to bring emergency equipment, such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, blankets, drinking water and snacks, along with flares and jumper cables. An ice scraper and chains for the tires will also come in handy. While a white Christmas is great for the memories, it’s not ideal for winter driving conditions.

Pad your schedule to allow plenty of time for the drive. Like shopping malls, the roads are busiest on the days right before and after the major holidays. If possible, take an extra day off to reduce the chances of being lodged in a traffic jam.

Once on the road, drive carefully, patiently and stifle any burgeoning impulses of road rage. Try not to view other cars and traffic signals as personal obstacles. Work with your fellow drivers and not against them. Indicate during lane changes and give everyone plenty of room. Also, be forgiving when someone demonstrates reckless driving.

Don’t leave valuables in your car. Pack all items, especially brightly wrapped packages, in the trunk. If afraid of squashed bows, wait until you arrive to wrap the gifts.

Overall, try to make driving fun, and view it as part of the holiday, not as a chore. If traveling with children, get everyone involved by singing or reminiscing about favorite past holidays. The ride will be over before you know it, and you’ll actually look forward to the drive back home.

Giving Thanks – Arriving Safely Is Thanks Enough

If Santa can travel safely year in and year out, so can you and your family. Just remember these tips from the friendly travel agents at ASTA. With a little TravelSense, everyone will be home for the holidays with warm memories to share.

So, what will I actually be doing?

Tour operators require reps to work throughout the summer and winter seasons to ensure that holiday makers have an enjoyable trip. You’re the first point of contact for customers so be prepared to answer questions and resolve problems.

Your day will usually start with meeting the excited new arrivals at the airport and overseeing transfers to their accommodation. From there your duties may include:

    • Giving an introductory talk on the facilities and the area
    • Accompanying holidaymakers on excursions
    • Helping to arrange entertainment
    • Completing paperwork (yes, even reps have admin )

Of course, holidays rarely run completely smoothly and you may need to deal with unexpected dilemmas from lost passports to medical emergencies, so be prepared to deal with anything.

    • Free accommodation
    • Reduced or free meals at the hotel
    • Free flights to and from your location
    • Reduced holiday costs from the tour operator

    The good points.

“Being your own boss while in a lovely destination and helping clients to get the most out of their holiday. Clients are generally very grateful for any help you can offer, from taking them to hospital if a child has had an accident to pointing them in the direction of the best beaches and good restaurants,” say the reps at Sunvil Holidays.

If that wasn’t enough, you’ll have the chance to learn a new language, meet a range of different people and, as entry requirements are very flexible, gain valuable work experience. what’s not to love?

    and the bad

“Flight problems and delays. There is so little that you can do and the airport very quickly becomes a very unpleasant place to be. Trying to get accurate information for your clients is a nightmare!”

If you’ve ever gone away and seen the reps leading a pub crawl, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was all sunbathing and partying, but it you’d be wrong, it’s as much hard work as it is fun.

    Is there study involved?

There are no set requirements to become a holiday rep but many tour operators are looking for four GCSEs (grade C or above) and experience working in customer care. You also need to be aged 18 plus (sometimes this can be 21 and over).

    Applicants with.

    • A qualification in the industry (such as a BTEC Diploma in travel and tourism)
    • A working knowledge of one or more foreign languages
    • Administrative experience

. will find themselves a step ahead of the rest. A qualification in childcare is essential for anyone wanting to work as a children’s rep running holiday clubs.

Once your application has been successful you’ll need to complete an intense 2 to 4-week induction course run by the tour operator. The course will cover subjects such as health and safety, dealing with customer complaints, organising excursions and exchange rates.

OK, I’m interested. But is it really the job for me?

Anyone with a love of travel, bags of energy. plenty of initiative, polished customer service skills and lots of patience will make a first-class holiday rep.

How Can I Find Cheap Travel Insurance?

By Nancy Parode. Senior Travel Expert

Nancy Parode’s travel and cultural articles have appeared in print magazines, such as Military Spouse and Northern Virginia. and on several websites, including Sixty and Me, IntoWine.com, The World I Online and NotForTourists.com. Nancy also blogged about military life for HometownAnnapolis.com, the website of Annapolis, Maryland’s The Capital newspaper. Tripping.com named Nancy’s Senior Travel blog here at About.com a Top Travel Blog in the Senior Travel category, and About.com’s Senior Travel website made Discover Corps ‘ list of Best Baby Boomer Travel Sites for 2105.

Nancy has been featured on NPR affiliate WRVO Public Media’s “Take Care” radio show and BlogTalkRadio’s “Transformed Travel” show. She has been interviewed by The New York Times’ Frugal Travel writer Seth Kugel, SixtyandMe.com’s Margaret Manning, The Amateur Traveler’s Chris Christensen and consumer advocate Christopher Elliott.

Question: How Can I Find Cheap Travel Insurance?

How much should I spend on travel insurance?

That depends on how much you can afford to lose. If you want to protect your travel investment, buying a cheap travel insurance policy isn t necessarily the best way to go.

Travel insurance is like any other type of insurance. Underwriters use complex algorithms to determine how much coverage to offer and what each policy will cost.

When you describe your travel plans, either on a travel insurance website or over the telephone, these details and the amount of coverage you need determine how much you will pay.

Before you buy a cheap travel insurance policy, consider these questions. Write down your thoughts as you go; this will help you consider each travel insurance policy s coverage and exclusions.

    • What kind of travel insurance do you really need? Are you worried primarily about trip cancellation, or do you need coverage for hurricanes, emergency medical evacuation. financial default or overseas medical treatment?
    • How much did you pay for your trip? Could you get your payment back if something went wrong before departure, or is this amount non-refundable?
    • Are you healthy, or do you have pre-existing medical conditions? If you are currently under treatment for an illness or health condition, you will need to buy a policy that offers coverage for pre-existing conditions. This will, unfortunately, add to the cost of your travel insurance policy.
    • Would you like the option to cancel your trip before your departure date if you are worried about weather problems, novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) or family emergencies? Again, you ll need to buy special coverage, called cancel for any reason coverage, if you want this type of flexibility.

    • Are you traveling to a remote area? If so, could you afford to pay for emergency medical evacuation if you became ill or sustained an injury? Emergency medical evacuation insurance can be expensive, but paying for emergency medical transportation out of pocket can set you back tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Armed with the answers to these questions, it s time to get travel insurance quotes. The easiest way to do this is to visit a travel insurance aggregator s website, such as InsureMyTrip.com. Squaremouth.com or Insureandgo.com (UK), and enter your travel information. You can also call your own insurance agent or find a travel insurance agent through the US Travel Insurance Association. The Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada or the Association of British Insurers .

Remember that your travel provider may not sell true travel insurance. Take the time to investigate this issue before you purchase a policy from your airline, cruise line or tour operator. You always have the option to insure your trip independently.

Once you have several quotes in hand, set aside time to thoroughly review each policy. If the cheapest travel insurance policy doesn t offer the coverage you need, don t buy it. Instead, purchase the travel insurance policy that provides your desired coverage at the lowest cost.

After you buy your travel insurance policy, make two copies of it. Take one with you on your trip and leave a second copy with a trusted friend or relative back home. You re now ready to travel with confidence, knowing you re prepared for unforeseen problems.

Book a summer travel bargain: The best websites for. finding holiday deals

    By Fred Mawer 16:06 30 Apr 2013, updated 16:07 30 Apr 2013

Type “best travel deals” into Google, and you’re offered over 1.3 billion results. Not exactly helpful. So what are the best shortcuts for finding discounted packages, hotel stays and days out?

Below, I’ve picked seven websites that are definitely worth turning to. Some, like lastminute.com and Teletext Holidays, promote thousands of cut-price offers. Others, like Groupon, advertise a much smaller selection of deals that have to be snapped up that day or week.

Either way, however enticing the deals, and discounts, might seem, do be sceptical about promised savings and shop around. Prices in the world of travel are not fixed in stone.

Grab a bargain: Being savvy could save you hundreds of pounds on a summer getaway

    www.travelzoo.co.uk

With 26 million subscribers worldwide, Travelzoo is a major player in the sphere of travel deals. Its best feature is its Top 20 deals section – the 20 best deals its researchers can find, carefully checked out for accuracy and availability, and emailled out each week to subscribers. These deals cover city breaks, resort packages, cruises and hotel stays, and each is written up in impressive detail, with the saving, the dates of travel and why Travelzoo thinks the deal is so good clearly spelt out. Also worth perusing, and registering for, are “Local Deals”: heavily discounted and persuasively described hotel breaks and activity and spa sessions in regional parts of the UK, for which you purchase redeemable vouchers.

    More.

    www.lastminute.com

The iconic, dot-com boom website is still very much alive and kicking. You can find deals on pretty much any travel-related booking (not just last-minute ones). The website is particularly good for discounted sun-and-sand packages and for hotel stays. Big savings can be had by booking one of its many Top Secret Hotels deals, for which you need to be willing to take the risk of not knowing the name of the property until you’ve paid, Also good for theatre deals.

Teletext shines. but more information on why deals are singled out as ‘staff favourites’ would be good

    www.teletextholidays.co.uk

Another household name, and part of the same company as the Daily Mail, Teletext Holidays is a good bet if you want a massive choice of often bargain, mainstream packages. The website has good search options – you can bring up deals to a specific resort in, say, Majorca. More information on why certain holiday deals are singled out as staff favourites would be useful.

    More.

    www.groupon.co.uk

The best known of the so-called “daily deals” websites. It comes in two parts. There are deals on offer – usually just for a day or two – for meals, activities and spa and beauty treatments oriented to some 60 UK cities and regions. (Some of these deals can be excellent: I recently purchased steak and chips for four, plus a bottle of house wine, for just £29 at a good local restaurant.) Then there are the Groupon Getaways deals, offering a small but enticing selection of UK breaks, city and sun trips, and “experiences” – anything from a stay in the Lake District to a week in Sardinia and a Himalayan trek. Each deal is carefully described, and the promised saving

A word of caution: Summer bargains exist but it pays to remain sceptical, says Fred

    www.secretescapes.com

This is one of the best “flash sale” travel websites. It covers stays at four- or five-star hotels in the UK and abroad, and upper-end packages with flights. The deals can be real bargains, with savings sometimes over 50 per off the best rates offered direct from the hotel or from online agents. (I’ve just done the calculations for last-minute stays at a couple of London hotels offered in the Secret Escapes’ Impulse section). The detail on each deal is impressive. How the advertised percentage discount is calculated is clearly spelt out; you’re encouraged to compare the offer against another provider (a link to their website is provided); and the hotel or holiday is written up in useful detail, with a summary of plus points in a “we like” box. Most deals are available to book for five to seven days. Though Secret Escapes sets itself out as members only, there’s no joining fee and subscription is very quick. A pity about the additional booking fee: up to £20 on transactions over £99.

    www.voyage-prive.co.uk

This members-only, flash sale, luxury travel website is very like Secret Escapes. However, its deals are different (and often very enticing), so it’s well worth having a good look around, and registering for regular email alerts. Again, a pity about the additional booking fee – of £15 on the dummy bookings I made.

Bownty hunter: This website pulls in deals from several other travel sites

    www.bownty.com

A useful daily deals “aggregator” – that is, it pulls together offers from various other daily deals websites such as Travelzoo, Groupon, Secret Escapes and LivingSocial. Filters let you focus just on travel-related deals (either domestic or abroad) and those relevant to a particular city. However, for the city-related deals, as well as selecting the city, confusingly you also need to tick the “local deals” box, otherwise nationwide deals are displayed.

    And the winner is.

The flash sales websites have a lot to commend them. However, Travelzoo gets my vote for its Top 20 deals feature, which is excellent at separating the wheat from the chaff when it comes to deals.

    Travel Insurance:

    Common Questions

Most of go on holiday with our tickets and passports, yet many of us quite happily set off without any travel insurance in place. It is vital to have adequate travel insurance policy for ourselves and for those we are travelling with, especially when we are leaving home.

What would you do if you went abroad and needed medical treatment? Say you have booked a holiday in the UK and have to cancel it due to you being hospitalised or a family member being made redundant.

What would you do should the airline you are going to fly with go bust and you are then unable to reach your holiday destination? Should you not have the correct insurance in place, your dream holiday may become your ultimate nightmare, with you facing bills amounting to many thousands of pounds. Should you have to be brought back to the UK, for example, from the States the air ambulance alone can cost around Ј45,000.

Upon deciding that you do need travel insurance, you then need to make sure that you buy the best kind of cover for specific needs. This will be dependent on the kind of travel you are going to undertake and the cheapest policy may not be the most appropriate for you.

Reading our travel insurance guide will enable you to decide the cover level you need to be looking for so that you are totally prepared for that dream holiday.

We can also compare Diabetic Travel Insurance click here for more.

    The basics of travel insurance

Travel insurance premiums differ a lot. It is of course vital for you to obtain good value for money as it is to select the policy that meets your needs. You can add extras, however, a basic policy needs to include these cover levels:

    Cancellation and curtailment

The limit that is recommended is Ј3,000, or your total holiday cost. Usually travel insurers pay out when family members become ill whilst you are on holiday and you have to return early. Read the small print carefully and you will find that usually insurance companies do not pay out if you have returned early due to a friend becoming ill.

Get a cheap travel insurance quote today

    Delay

    Baggage and belongings

    Personal liability

Should you end up injuring someone or damage someone’s property, they can make a claim against you. Hence, it is sensible to have personal liability cover up to Ј1m.

    Emergency assistance

Most insurance companies provide a 24-hour emergency helpline which can prove invaluable especially given when you are in a different time zone.

    Medical cover

Certain policies offer generous limits. However, you need to question yourself as to whether or not the cover is actually necessary. Otherwise, you may be paying over the odds for insurance you do not need.

Compare quotes from top travel insurers today

Pregnancy ought not to prevent you going on a holiday. You will need to check your policy terms and conditions. The majority of travel insurance companies do insure pregnant women, however, normally for up to around 24 weeks. You are likely to be covered in the event you find out that you are pregnant whilst on holiday and therefore need to curtail your break.

What happens should I have a pre-existing medical condition?

A standard travel insurance policy does not cover pre-existing medical conditions. So say you already have asthma and suffer an attack when holidaying that necessitates medical treatment, your policy is not going to pay out.

It is crucial that you declare any existing health issues on application for travel insurance as failure to disclose any relevant details might invalidate the policy.

Certain specialist policies do cover pre-existing conditions; the higher the risk of a claim the higher premium.

The advantages and disadvantages of a european health insurance card

Should you be going to Europe, you may apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to medical treatment in state run hospitals within the EU, as well some other European countries, such as, Iceland and Norway.

The EHIC can prove useful in an emergency. However, it does not act as a substitute for insurance. EHIC holders pay the same amount for treatment as a local would. Hence, if the treatment is free for the country’s residents, you are not going to need to pay nothing. On the other hand, should the locals pay towards healthcare, you are going to have to pay up.

The card does not cover repatriation costs because the card does not cover the cost of a return flight home should you become ill or have an accident when on holiday.

You can apply for the EHIC online (0845 606 2030)) and it is of note that it is free.

If you need medical are and use this card, most travel insurers do waive the excess.

How does the excess work on a travel insurance policy

It is vital to grasp how the ‘excess’ functions on a travel insurance policy in order that you do not get stung. The policy holder pays a set sum, an excess, towards a claim. Therefore, on a claim for Ј1,000, with a policy excess of Ј100, the insurance company will pay out Ј900. Certain policies charge an excess per section, so the costs can rapidly mount up.

Some insurance policies charge only one excess per claim, which can prove to be cheaper.

Do I have to take out worldwide cover?

The majority of insurers provide European or worldwide cover. It is vital that you check that you are insured to travel to your destination. Overall, Europe-only policies tend to be cheaper than worldwide cover and usually include countries on European boundaries, such as, Morocco, Egypt and Turkey. Should you be travelling to America or Canada, ensure the country is included on your worldwide policy; you may need to take out specialist insurance to cover the country.

Travel insurance to annual trips or single trips?

You can purchase travel insurance each time you go on holiday, or you can choose annual multi trip travel insurance, which normally covers any number of trips over a year.

Should you be a seasoned traveler or you are considering a long haul vacation, an annual policy usually works out cheaper. Should you make two or more trips per year, or be going to a far away destination, you can save money on your travel insurance if you opt for an annual rather than a single trip policy.

Overall levels of cover, especially for medical expenses, baggage and cancellation are more generous on an annual policy. So if you are a frequent traveller you can be make last-minute trips without any concerns about insurance.

    Backpackers insurance

Insurers normally place a limit on the duration of your holiday. Should you purchase a single trip policy, you are normally covered for a trip lasting up to 31 days. Certain companies insure lengthier holidays as standard, however, read the small print with care. Should you be planning an extended trip, like a gap year, you are able to purchase backpackers travel insurance, often referred to as long stay or gap year travel insurance. This is normally valid for between three and 18 months and covers a trip across various countries.

    Family travel insurance

It is usually cheaper to purchase a family policy should you be travelling with your children. Moreover, certain insurers offer free cover for younger children. However, scour the excess terms on a family policy. Certain companies charge an excess for each family member. Therefore, say a family of four was forced to cancel a trip, that family would be stung for four excesses.

    Holiday Road-Trip Survival Tips

Are you and your family planning to drive to a holiday get-together this year? Whether you’re heading to Grandma’s cottage or a favorite vacation spot to celebrate holidays with family or friends, AAA has simple tips to help make your drive a smooth one, so you can arrive at your destination safely and without incident.

    •  Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained. If maintenance is not up to date, have your car and tires inspected before you take a long drive.
    • Map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the most popular times of the year. If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic.
    • Keep anything of value in the trunk or covered storage area.
    • If you’re traveling with children, remind them not to talk to strangers. Go with them on bathroom breaks and give them whistles to be used only if the family gets separated.
    • Have roadside assistance contact information on hand, in case an incident occurs on the road.
    • In case of an emergency, keep a cell phone and charger with you at all times. AAA and many other companies offer smartphone applications that enable motorists to request help without making a phone call.

With a little prep, you can leave the road-trip stress at home and enjoy your holiday with family and friends.

Major storm expected to snarl Northeast holiday travel. #travel #info
