The Lazy Wanderer in Provence

By Beth on 4 Nov 2015

Rating for this holiday

What a pleasure to embark on a walking tour where all of the logistical decisions and arrangements have been made for you, all of the routes figured out in advance, such that all you have to do is show up and enjoy. I was made to feel so welcome by my hosts, and imagined myself at times a princess in a chateau (even though I did not stay in a chateau), or a lady in a country manor house circa 1870. My time was entirely my own, whether I chose to spend an hour taking photographs in one village or whether I chose to sit on a rock and write in my journal before making my descent into the valley and continuing on the walk. I enjoyed the perfect combination of nature, village life, country life, exercise, solitude, and the right amount of community with people from other countries on my 6-day adventure. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Even in October, the Alta Via Val Venosta is spectacular

Culture, cuisine, history and monuments

Europe is an extraordinary blend of languages, stories, peoples and parties. There are time-tested favourite cities with their blend of living large and historic tales: London, Paris, Rome. If you’re a first-time traveller, try getting into the European swing in France, Germany, Britain and Spain. Been there done that? How about seeing the birthplace of democracy in Athens, cruising the canals in Venice or tripping across the Bosphorus in Istanbul?

Tuscany, Italy

Design aficionados will enjoy the funky verve of Copenhagen and Stockholm. If majestic landscapes make you tingle, remember the Swiss Alps, Scottish Highlands and Norwegian fjords. Island hoppers should keep Greece and Croatia on the list. There are deserted beaches to be found in Albania and Bulgaria and the hot spots fringe France’s Cote d’Azure, Portugal’s Algarve and Spain’s Costa Brava. While in Spain – well, off-shore Spain – get your party pants and dancing shoes on if you swing over to Ibiza. Of course this is just the merest dusting of the geographical and cultural treats here. A holiday in Europe can offer these and ample helpings more.

Cambodia

The sensational ruins of Angkor may be the main attraction, but Cambodia’s exquisite temples, secluded beaches, charming villages and magical markets deserve lots of attention too. With genuine locals always ready to share a sincere smile, Cambodia will steal your heart and enrich your spirit.

Cambodia trip reviews

Best time to visit Cambodia

Culture and customs

The Khmer culture has lasted for centuries, and is based on tradition, honouring ancestors, respecting elders and living a life of honesty, humility and kindness. Which is probably why Cambodians are known for being some of the most warm, hospitable and humble people in the world. Above all these qualities, Cambodians are known for their remarkable ability to get on with life after enduring the atrocities that ravaged the country in the 1970s.

Most Khmer people are Buddhist. Monks are highly regarded and respected in society, and religious festivals and ceremonies are important parts of daily life. When visiting Cambodia, expect to see orange-robed monks and many displays of faith – from people visiting large, elaborate temples to them praying over small, humble shrines.

Despite the infiltration of modern ideas and concepts, Khmer customs and traditions are kept alive with traditional dance, art, festivals and costume enduring alongside modern pop music and dance.

Japanese Cooking Class in Kyoto

Off the beaten Track – Independent Travel, 11 Days

Best of Japan, 8 Days

Check out your incredible photos of Asia!

Say konnichiwa to Fuji-san

Japan’s mountainous landscapes, hidden valleys, traditional gardens, onsens (hot springs), and ancient temples are bewitching. (Hanging out naked in hot springs with strangers may be confronting initially but it’s supremely relaxing once you, well, relax!) Kyoto is stacked with 17 World Heritage sites, 1600 Buddhist temples and more than 400 Shinto shrines: it’s a cultural gem. One of the best times to plan a holiday to Japan is in March–April: it’s not too hot and cherry blossom season delights all who witness it. ‘Golden Week’ is late April–early May and everyone takes a holiday domestically then, so steer clear of that period if you can.

Holidays to Mexico

A land of contrasts, a fusion of antiquity and modernity – book one of our holidays in Mexico and enjoy the colours, spectacle and sheer exuberance of this wonderful country.

Ancient

Mexico is rich with history, from the ruins of Palenque, some of which date back to 226 BC, to the Pyramid of Kukulcan that dominates the landscape of Chichén Itza. Enter one of the temples in the Mayan ruins of Bon Bonampak and see vivid murals and lintels that tell stories of a long-dead civilisation. Climb 248 steps to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun in ancient Teotihuacán for incredible vistas of an Aztec city. And just as spectacular as the man-made wonders of centuries ago is Copper Canyon, consisting of six individual canyons that each have a coppery-green hue, hence the name. The Spanish discovered silver here in the 17th century and Barrancas del Cobre – as it is known in Mexico – dwarfs even the Grand Canyon in size.

Water

In Mexico you’ll discover beautiful beaches like Baja, with its white sands contrasting exquisitely with the warm turquoise sea – the perfect place to relax, and even spot whales. The spectacular coastline of Tulum is home to one of the country’s best beaches and there’s even a prominent Mayan ruin to explore. It’s also an excellent place for snorkelling. Mexico has its fair share of cenotes – or sinkholes – that occur naturally, and in Tulum you’ll find Gran Cenote with its glorious stalactites, stalagmites and crystal-clear water. Diving enthusiasts will adore Isla Cozumel which has some of the world’s best reefs. And for a different kind of diving, La Quebrada Cliff in Acapulco provides jaw-dropping heights from summit to sea.

Nature

For sheer natural wonder, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve takes some beating. See a host of animals in over 1.6 million acres made up of tropical forests, wetlands, and coastal habitats. There are big cats including jaguars and pumas, and creatures such as tapirs and anteaters, dolphins and manatees. Not forgetting a huge array of birds, reptiles and fish.

Shopping

Taxco is the destination for silver merchants from all over the world and you’ll find many places selling a wide range of superbly crafted silver jewellery.

The State of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico has probably some of the best markets in the whole of the country. Here you can sample and buy delicious food products, from coffee and chocolate to fresh-baked bread, sausages and tacos. You’ll also find a whole range of artisan goods including hats, rugs and hammocks, leather bags and sandals.

Eating and drinking

Whether you fancy listening to the traditional and stirring strains of a Mariachi band, sampling the café and bar culture of Guanajuato or the nightlife of Playa del Carmen, there’s something in Mexico to suit your taste. And while you’re here, make sure to try coffee and cocoa made to traditional Mexican recipes. And for a drop of the hard stuff, an authentic Mexican Tequila should be top of your list.

Booking a holiday to Mexico with lastminute.com means you will always get the best late deals. We pride ourselves on our deals and that’s why lastminute.com gives you a Price Match Guarantee. If you find Mexico holidays cheaper anywhere else within 24 hours, we will refund the difference. Moreover, the Mexican holidays offered on lastminute.com are guaranteed under the ATOL scheme, meaning your package is protected if your tour operator or flight carrier becomes insolvent.

Mexico

Mexico is an intoxicating land of archaeological treasures, vibrant cities, vivacious culture and welcoming locals. With jungles, mountains, beaches, reefs and caves to explore – and museums, cafés, bars and markets to visit – any time spent in Mexico will never be long enough.

At a glance

Best time to visit Mexico

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you re sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Mexico

1. Tamales

The origins of the tamale date back centuries to the Mesoamerican period. This simple dish of corn dough wrapped in a plantain leaf and steamed or boiled is often dressed up with the addition of meat and mole (sauce). Don’t forget to remove the leaf before eating.

2. Ceviche

Although not originally native to Mexico, ceviche has been served in Mexico for centuries. Best tried in coastal areas where the seafood is freshest, this light dish features shrimp, octopus or squid along with lime, onion, chilli and avocado.

This hearty breakfast favourite hails from the Yucatan area and consists of eggs, cheese, beans, tortillas and salsa.

4. Tostada de Pata

This melange of pork, beans, cheese, salsa and onions served on a toasted tortilla is a quick, tasty and cheap snack and is easily found around Mexico.

Namibia safaris, tailor-made vacations to Namibia, Namibia holidays #travel

Namibia safari

is very different from the typical savanna safari experience. It is much more about remarkable desert scenery and vast empty landscapes, where wildlife interactions are much more infrequent and highly prized.

Upsides.

Namibia is one of the world’s most lightly populated countries. It is a truly special place, one which we absolutely adore and return to as often as we can. We are always amazed at few people choose to travel on safari here, especially given how safe, healthy and cost effective it can be.

The main upsides are the remarkable and diverse desert scenery and the wonderful desert-adapted wildlife, as well as the diverse culture including some very remote and authentic tribespeople.

Additionally Namibia can be accessed by self-drive safari, which means that it can be very economical by comparison with travel in most African countries. It is also virtually malaria free and has a very healthy climate, which makes it particularly suitable for adventurous families with younger children.

Read more about the upsides for travel in Namibia.

Downsides.

The main potential downside is that the wildlife is naturally sparse in these desert environments, mean that this is really not well suited to a first safari.

The driving distances are very substantial, you really do need to be keen on doing a road trip. Also, despite the very low visitor numbers, there can be considerable clustering of vehicles and visitors in core locations such as Etosha and Sossusvlei.

Read more about the downsides for travel in Namibia.

When to visit.

The classic period to visit Namibia is the Jun/Dec dry season, when safari conditions tend to be at their best. However the coastal desert areas, which are generally of most interest, have a completely different climate and are good year round.

Your choice of month will very much depend on the areas that you choose and the specific activities in which you are interested, please refer to the seasonality sections on the individual lodge pages for detailed information.

Read more about when to visit this area.

Regions.

We subdivide the Namibia into eight regions, each of which has its own very distinctive character and set of attractions. The majority of visitors combine three or more of these regions in their trip.

Namibia Northwest. is by far our favourite part of the country, containing the fabulously wild and remote Skeleton Coast North. the wonderful wildlife of Damaraland North and the remote Himba tribes of Kaokaland West .

Namibia Southwest. is perhaps the best known area, containing the iconic dune landscapes of Sossusvlei and Namibrand .

Namibia Northcentral. is the area which contains the highest concentrations of wildlife in Etosha and the famous cheetah conservation projects at Otjiwarongo .

Namibia South. is an area of very low population density which contains the vast scenery of the Fish River Canyon and the remote port of Luderitz on the infamous Diamond Coast.

Namibia West. is a diverse area which includes the coastal ports of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. the public access section of the Skeleton Coast. Inland lies Twyfelfontein. famous for its rock-art and desert elephants.

Namibia Southeast. is a region of generally less interest, but does include the capital and main port of entry at Windhoek .

Namibia Northeast. is an area which is generally transited through on the way to the Caprivi Strip, but which does offer some superb Bushman interaction in the remote Tsumkwe area.

Namibia Caprivi Strip. is primarily a transport route through to the Zambezi, but does contain some modest safari options at Mudumu and Mamili and Caprivi Eastern Tip .

How we like to include this country in trips.

Although it seems to be surprisingly difficult getting people to safari in Namibia for the first time, the proportion who come back for more is extraordinary.

The most popular way to get around is by road, with an inner network of decent graded roads being safe to self-drive and easily connecting the popular attractions such as Sossusvlei and Etosha .

It is worth noting that the distances in Namibia are very large and self-driving inherently involves covering a lot of road miles, so it is important to deploy enough nights, otherwise you simply spend the whole trip driving. Between 12 and 21 nights is usual.

The main disadvantage of self-drive is that you are fundamentally unable to access most of the more remote and entrancing areas, either because it is logistically too dangerous or because the areas are closed to public access, or both.

Top-end guests tend to fly by light aircraft between a select group of very remote and fabulous camps, typically spending 3 to 4 nights in each. But this tends to work out about three times the price of self-drive.

Typically this might include a lodge in Namibrand. plus two or three of the top camps in the remote Namibia Northwest. as well as the prime safari camps of Okavango Delta in Botswana .

Without doubt the most exciting way to visit Namibia is by means of a private-guided overland expedition, most likely into the fabulously remote Skeleton Coast North. relatively arduous trips which typically last for 5 to 10 nights.

We love to combine elements of self-drive, flying and guided overland safari to create fabulous and very varied trips of 10 to 28 nights. That way you really can get to see the country properly and, inevitably, fall in love with it as much as we have!

Namibia is usually best visited as a stand-alone destination, since it inherently needs a lot of time to explore properly. Only trips of three weeks or longer tend to also include other countries.

The most common exceptions are high-end trips with the safari camps of Botswana to provide a superb ‘delta and desert’ experience.

Visa, health, money.

Here are a few tips on travel issues in Namibia.

Hi I bookes an all-inclusive Holiday with Travelsoon on the Internet – On arrival in Cyprus Papos we were take to Eleni Holiday Village, and the duty manger told us we were not on his guest list?

He said they do it all the time.

He took our accommodation voucher and rang the number on the voucher, after half an hour he said I have found somewhere you can stay, we asked why we can not stay at the Eleni Village, and he said we are Full.

He said the agents just take the bookings then hope they can accommodate the bookings.

A cab took us to the Paffian Sun Holiday Village.

On arrival we asked who sent us here and to check we will not get an extra bill etc-

We were told they did not know who sent us here and did not know anything regarding our situation apart from we can stay at their Holiday Village as an All-Inclusive Guest?

Next day we again asked if the reception could get us in touch with the organisers who sent us to the Pafian Sun, they said they did not know who to contact, and due to the Eleni Village Duty Manager keeping our accommodation voucher. of what we thought he needed to cross charge our stay at the other Holiday Village, we had no contact details, and we had no one at home to get copy s off our computer etc,All so we were on holiday and did not need the stress of chasing why and how etc. until we got home –

We did ask a Thomas Cook Repmat out Venus if they had any dealings or knew how to contact Travelsoon, but we were told they have not heard of them?

On return we have had been trying tto get an answer since last early October 2012- as to why we were miss sold a holiday package and each time we send a letter to them it takes a month to reply or more-

We wer also told ournhold luggage would be £30 pound a bag when we confirmed we need two bags it went up to £55 .50 per bag.

We ask as to who got the extra money above the £39 pound and to date refuse to reply on that point.

I m About to report my situation regarding Travelsoon and Bedwithease – too the two local offices of Fairtrading and to Abta-

Also to the TV programme on Rip-Off Holidays that runs several times a year.

If you are interested, we could share our experience s and try to stop firms mugging normal people.

And hide behind e/mails-

Clean, safe, efficient and beautiful, this is a country like no other. The Swiss watch is renowned for its sharp time keeping, the Swiss chocolate is known to melt-in-the-mouth and the Swiss water of the thermal springs is so pure it can help heal the joints and the respiratory system. But then what else would you expect from a country that speaks four languages?

From boating to a rock in the middle of the spectacular Rhine Falls to ascending Europe’s highest railway station for bewitching Alpine views or marvelling at neoteric architecture that challenges the peripheries of design, landlocked Switzerland is multifarious in its offerings of things you can see and do.

Geneva is the ideal destination for food lovers; housing nearly 40 Michelin starred restaurants. The cerulean blue of the Lake is surrounded by snowy mountain summits and gentle hillsides striped with vineyards. Explore Lausanne’s designer boutiques or roll your dice in the famous casino of Montreux. If it’s modern art you love, head to Vevey and see Jean-Pierre Vaug’s fork sculpture which literally pierces Lake Geneva. For a scenic tour, jump on a Mouette (water taxi) around the Lake and at night, visit the atmospheric Old Town for a touch of elegant, local flavour.

Travel in style on the Glacier Express visiting the glamorous Alpine resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. With its glass domed roof and panoramic windows this is the most spectacular train journey in Switzerland. If train travel isn’t for you, how about taking a helicopter flight from Zermatt to the top of the Matterhorn. one of the most captivating mountains in the world? For picture-perfect postcard Swiss scenery, enjoy the cogwheel to the Jungfrau Plateau, the highest station in Europe. The mountain giants of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau will tower over you and from the famous observatory platform you can take in views of Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Welcome to Bernese Oberland and its sugar-white mountains – possibly the most scenic Alpine region in Switzerland. In Interlaken. ancient unhurried ice is still etching and shaping its way through the peaks, meaning that here you can experience everything from ice climbing, glacier trekking, and hiking to paragliding, handgliding and canyoning. Sail and windsurf on Lake Thun and take in the magic of the mesmerising Blue Ice Grotto in Grindelwald.

If you are looking for something more lively, immerse yourself in the city of Zürich. where the Limmat River emerges from the Zurichsee and runs through the city. The Old Town of Altstadt is a pedestrian zone in the day-time and packed with medieval churches, including St. Peter’s, boasting Europe’s largest clock face. Zürich itself is abundant in vibrant nightlife, a large art and cultural scene including Marc Chagall’s magnificent stained glass windows at the Fraumünster Church, designer shopping at Bahnhofstrasse and an array of great restaurants. It makes a fascinating urban contrast to the Alpine scenery you will have already witnessed and is the perfect beginning or end of a trip to this beguiling country.

  • Responsible travel, Responsible tourism, Eco tourism, Adventure holidays – Imaginative Traveller

    #responsible travel
    #

    Responsible Travel

    Our Policy

Responsible tourism is at the heart of Imaginative Traveller. For 20 years we have taken customers to places around the world in social and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring everyone involved respects and maintains the natural and often delicate balance of the destination.

As travellers ourselves we are well aware of the impact that tourism can have and whilst economic gain from tourism is often fundamental to a country, it should never be at the expense of its culture or the environment. It is our aim to provide journeys that have minimal negative and maximum positive impact on the places we visit. We do not believe that, as visitors, we should impose our own cultures on others; rather that we should experience foreign cultures and appreciate them for what they are.

We believe giving something back is essential. We therefore work with our customers and the people we visit to ensure the benefits go directly to contribute to local cultures and environmental conservation. This is not only good the communities we visit but it also gives our travellers more enriched adventures.

    What we do

    Supporting and involving local people

    • We recruit and involve local people wherever possible.
    • We support and prefer to work directly with local businesses, services and individuals.
    • Our supplies and equipment are purchased locally wherever possible.
    • We aim to work and treat the traveller, local communities and businesses in a fair and just manner.
    • We aim to work with partners who operate their own local initiatives.
    • Small, family-run establishments make up a high percentage of the accommodation we use.
    • Where it is practical but not intrusive we stay as guests of local families.

    Support ClimateCare

To help fund by donating to ClimateCare projects or to find out more about ClimateCare’s low carbon technology projects visit their website at www.climatecare.org

    The Rainforest Alliance

Imaginative Traveller has recently signed a contract with the Rainforest Alliance to work on responsible tourism practices with our Latin America suppliers.

The Rainforest Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation that works to conserve the environment and promote sustainable and ethical practices in a number of different industries across the World. One of the industries they are working in is tourism throughout Latin America.

They provide training and technical assistance to help local operators and hotels implement best practices and encourage them to seek certification from one of the organisations part of the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas.

We have signed up to work with them to encourage and motivate our local suppliers. Some of our local operators are already working with the Rainforest Alliance and in this instance our contract with them is simply reinforcing our commitment to responsible travel and demonstrating that it is of the utmost importance to us. For those operators who have not yet agreed to work with them; they will be contacted and encouraged to work on sustainable tourism practices. The aim is that at least 50% of our local partners will sign up but preferably more! The Rainforest Alliance will then also work through them with local hotels/lodges, effectively greening through the supply chain .

We are very pleased to work with the Rainforest Alliance and further demonstrate our longstanding commitment to sustainable tourism. We hope that this will allow us to do even more in Latin America and help responsible travel become an even more accepted and practiced means of holidaying.

If you would like to know more about Rainforest Alliance please visit their website www.rainforest-alliance.org

    The Travel Foundation

The Travel Foundation are an independent UK charity working to promote

sustainable tourism throughout the travel industry. They aim to encourage

understanding of responsible travel and also work on their own community

    and environmental initiatives worldwide.

Imaginative Traveller is demonstrating our support for the charity by working with them on a number of their worldwide projects. We are currently enlisting the help of our local suppliers and ground handlers in East Africa, Morocco and Sri Lanka to support some of the many initiatives the charity has in place. You will find details of the projects within our tour trip notes.

    I saw Mommy kissing Sinterklaas

It might be “Santa” here, but in Pella, Iowa, it’s “Sinterklaas.” And during Sinterklaas Day, the man in the red suit arrives in a wooden ship, wears a bishop’s miter, and has a Moorish servant as helper. Watch the parade of Christmas characters, decorated Dutch peddler carts, and caroling bands march past downtown Pella’s Dutch buildings to the Tulip Toren. At the end of the procession looms a large ship carrying Sinterklaas and his helper Piets. An annual Sinterklaas party at the Pella Opera House follows the parade when Sinterklaas reads from his book of good children (who get Dutch chocolate). Then it’s time for holiday songs, stories and visits with Sinterklaas. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, in downtown Pella and at the Pella Opera House, 611 Franklin St. Pella, Iowa. Admission for the breakfast is $10; the parade is free. pellahistorical.org or (641) 628-4311.

The Abbey Resort may offer an antidote with its 7th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, including cocoa, candy canes, Christmas music from the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, festive refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. If you can’t make it the day after Thanksgiving, the four weekends leading up to Christmas offer holiday activities such as: Christmas movies in the on-site theater; Santa’s Workshop crafts for all ages; A Holly Jolly Christmas Carnival of games, activities and crafts including cookie and gingerbread house decorating; Yuletide Bonfires with s’mores and cider; and a Brunch with Santa offered every Sunday. Jordan Holidays

    Handy Information

    Population – 6.3 million

    Currency – Jordanian dinar

    Capital – Amman

    Time Difference – GMT + 2 hours

Average flight time from London – 5 hours

    Language – Arabic

    Religion – Islam

    Telephone – International Dial – 00 1 876

    When To Go

Jordan boasts a wonderful Mediterranean climate, offering great conditions for a visiting throughout the year. However, it can be argued that the best times to visit Jordan are between March and May or September and November, when temperatures are not at their highest but there is still minimal rainfall and fantastic conditions for whatever you may choose to do during your stay in Jordan.

The summer months of July and August can see high temperatures well into the 30s, particularly in the drier areas such as the Jordan Valley and Wadi Rum. Festivals are frequently staged at this time, a very popular time for tourists to visit. Furthermore, many of Jordan’s main tourist attractions only operate around the summer months.

Winter on the other hand can be very cold, with Amman occasionally seeing snow. The deserts are particularly cold, especially at night time. if you do visit Jordan during winter it is advisable to bring plenty of warm layers.

The month of Ramadan is a tricky time for visitors as you shouldn’t eat, drink or smoke in public during the day, although visiting during Eid al-Fitr, the large celebration at the end of Ramadan, is recommended as a great time to visit.

    What To See

Above all else Jordan is famed for its historical attractions. Petra is a stunning city, one of the wonders of the world, carved into the rock face more than 2000 years ago. Visiting Petra is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

However, Petra is not the only historical attraction in Jordan. Visitors can explore the ruins of ancient Roman cities, Crusader castles and desert citadels. People can also venture to the mountain top from which Moses viewed the Promised Land.

On top of the traditional attractions of Jordan, visitors can also enjoy a fantastic array of activities including water sports and diving in the Red Sea’s crystal clear waters at Aqaba.

Adventure tourism is also growing increasingly popular in Jordan. Visitors can retrace the steps of Emperor Hadrian in four wheel drive vehicles from north to south, or go on fantastic camel and donkey treks through Jordan’s eastern deserts and central highlands just as Lawrence of Arabia did hundreds of years ago. The wild red desert of Wadi Rum can also be explored by the adventurous among us.

    Egypt

Awesome ancient wonders, endless golden sands and atmospheric local souqs make Egypt the ultimate travel destination. From the enigmatic aura of the Sphinx to the imposing glory of the Pyramids, step into the Land of the Pharaohs and discover the exotic charms of evocative Egypt.

    Egypt trip reviews

    Best time to visit Egypt

    Culture and customs

Egypt s culture is a unique blend of antiquity and modernity. Egyptians are very proud of their ancient heritage, and with such iconic monuments, impressive art and unique architecture, it s no wonder Egyptians are as mesmerised as foreigners are.

Just as in ancient times, religion plays a large part in daily life with most Egyptians being either Sunni Muslim or Coptic Christian. Much of life revolves around daily prayer and religious holidays, with Ramadan and Eid being the most important events in the calendar for Muslims. Ornate mosques and historic churches can be found almost everywhere in Egypt, and serve as important places of worship as well as social meeting points.

The influence of modern Western culture is particularly evident in large cities likes Cairo and Alexandria, with television, radio and internet all bringing pop culture, fashion and literature to Egypt. Despite this, Egypt clings strongly to tradition with family still being at the top of most Egyptians priorities. Loyalty to ones family, respect for elders and honouring ancestors are hallmarks of Egyptian life.

Food is another important part of Egyptian culture with traditional Middle Eastern fare being prepared and served in most family homes, restaurants and markets. Food is also the focal point of most celebrations, as is music – with modern Egyptians keeping folk music traditions alive by playing Arabic instruments like the oud at weddings and other celebrations.

To get the true picture of Egyptian culture and customs, be sure to sample local delicacies, listen to traditional music often played in cafes and restaurants, and chat with locals who wish to share their stories and lives with you. Some Intrepid trips offer the rare chance to stay with a local family – what better way to experience local life?

    Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you re sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

    Things to try in Egypt

    1. Seafood

Take the opportunity to tuck into fresh seafood, especially when in coastal regions and cities such as the Red Sea and Alexandria.

Exotic fruits are cheap and plentiful throughout Egypt – why not try guava, mango or melon from a market or street vendor.

    3. Ful Medames

Don t leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice – add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.

    4. Falafel

A favourite with vegetarians, falafel (fried chickpea balls) are available at markets and from street vendors, and are generally served as a snack.

    5. Tea (also known as shai)

An important part of daily life in Egypt, tea is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Turkish or Arabic coffee can be found in Egypt, so sit back in a cafe and drink your coffee short, black and sweet like the locals do.

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage “Life is short, eat dessert first”.

All inclusive holidays with The Co-operative Travel

    What is All Inclusive?

All Inclusive is one of the most popular package holidays available as it includes everything you need for a fixed price! Great for families or couples.

If you are on a tight budget and need to know exactly what you are spending. all inclusive holidays are perfect as you know that you don’t need to take any additional spending money unless you want to leave the resort.

    What does it include?

All inclusive holidays mean your flights, accommodation, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks) and drink (including selected alcohol) are included in the price of your holiday, saving you the worry of any additional costs. Some resorts also offer sports such as tennis and activities on site or facilities such as crèche or kids clubs so check each individual package for the added extras!

They may sound initially more expensive, but the costs of food, bottled water, alcohol and snacks can all add up, especially as a family and with all inclusive you know you will be well fed and watered for the duration of your holiday.

    Where can we go?

Most destinations now offer all inclusive as an option due to increased popularity over the years. Destinations such as Turkey. Greece. Egypt and the Caribbean offer great value with all inclusive and allow you to just kick back, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Booking your all inclusive break with The Co-operative Travel allows you to take the stress out of your holiday and ensure that you get the best value for money leaving you and your family to concentrate on having a good time!

Oslo is the capital with many good museums; Bergen is surrounded by mountains, is the southern end of the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage and has the Bryggen world heritage site; Stavanger is the small city with big city restaurants, nightlife and facilities plus top attractions in and around the city; Kristiansand is the warm popular capital of the southern s rlandet region; Trondheim is the big university town and Troms is the friendly and most northerly city. All the cities are built beside the sea, with boats a major feature of life.

Norway has good travel links with many hubs in Europe, like London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, which have connections to America, Asia, etc.

There are also several good places to start exploring.

It is just an hour or two flight time from the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Holland, with many other connections not so far away.

There are ferries from Denmark, Sweden and Germany – the links to Britain ended in 2008, until at least 2014 (see here for more info ). in late 2013 it looked like a possibility but then it went quiet again.

    World class Attractions

Also check out all the special events and festivals – Stavanger was the European Capital of Culture in 2008

    Madagascar

Split apart from the super-continent of Gondwanaland around 160 million years ago, the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar lies 425-kilometres off the east coast of Southern Africa. Go on a safari holiday to Madagascar and experience one of the world’s greatest kaleidoscopes of nature; between 80 and 90 per cent of the flora and fauna is endemic, and the 80 or so species of lemur are astonishing. Madagascar is packed full of wonders, also tempting with white-sand beaches making for the perfect luxury beach holiday, rich rainforests, and world-class dive sites.

Defined by its epic wildlife offerings, the world s fourth-largest island evokes paradise for those with a specialist interest in nature holidays, who also relish tropical white-sand beaches, lush rainforests, and national parks teeming with lemurs. Madagascar is home to thousands of plant and animal species, including chameleons, geckos, birds, tenrecs, fossa, baobabs, octopus trees, the bright-red Tomato frog, and the endemic aye-aye, the world s largest nocturnal primate.

For nature-lovers, Ranomafana National Reserve is one of Madagascar’s best-known parks, most famous for its 1986 discovery of the golden bamboo lemur that remains its star attraction. Equally fabulous is marvelling at gorges and canyons at Isalo National Park. walking the iconic Avenue of Baobabs , gazing at Amber Mountain, and enjoying otherworldly wildlife and fascinating culture at Mandrare River Camp on the banks of the Mandrare River.

Further fun awaits on the tiny offshore islands, where divers and snokellers are spoilt for choice with shipwrecks, underwater cathedrals , and plenty of marine-life action. If you prefer to stay dry, laze on pristine near-deserted sands at Nosy Be. Ile Sainte Marie and Ifaty. and take a whale-watching boat trip to see humpbacks.

There is much history to discover, too. Built on 12 hills, French-flavoured capital city Antananarivo. known as Tana , is a cultural melting pot complete with cobbled streets, churches, rice paddies, open-air markets, and the Queen s Palace. Also noteworthy is the world s only pirate cemetery at Ile Sainte Marie off Madagascar s east coast, the colonial-era train station at Antsirabe, and the UNESCO-listed Tsingy de Bemaraha Reserve – a unique mineral ‘forest’ with a labyrinth of limestone needles .

For me, Madagascar’s biggest appeal has to be the weird and wonderful wildlife – including lemurs, birds, insects, or reptiles. As well as this, you have hugely contrasting landscapes and the friendliest people you can hope to meet

What I love about Madagascar is that you’ve got idyllic beaches to kick back and relax on, as well as the usual water sports, but you’ve also got really interesting land activities nearby such as spiny forests, wildlife reserves, or local villages.

    Madagascar

With biodiversity to rival the Galapagos Islands, towns of colonial magnificence, beautiful beaches of golden sand and a remarkable culture influenced by Europe, Africa and the East, Madagascar s rare riches are well worth discovering. Venture into national parks to experience profound moments in nature, mellow out on idyllic islands, stroll through heritage towns and spot quirky wildlife not found anywhere else on this earth – Madagascar showcases the very best of our wild, weird but oh so wonderful world.

    Madagascar trip reviews

    Best time to visit Madagascar

    Top Picks

Top 5 Strange Species of Madagascar

    1. Fat-Tailed Dwarf Lemur

Known to hibernate for up to eight months of the year, this cute critter lives off fat reserves stored in its hefty tail – saved especially for these months of inactivity.

    2. Aye Aye

This odd-looking lemur can be found mainly on east coast of Madagascar. While it won t win any beauty contests, it can lay claim to being the largest nocturnal primate in the world. Its unique way of finding food (knocking on trees then gnawing through the wood to access the hidden grubs) makes the aye aye similar to the woodpecker.

With a cat-like body and a dog-like face, this strange beast endemic to Madagascar is actually closely related to the mongoose species. A carnivorous predator, the fossa roams forests day and night in search of prey – preferably lemurs, rodents and other small mammals.

This bizarre little species can bare resemblance to many different animals due to the unique circumstances of its evolution. Sharing ancestry with animals as diverse as elephants, sea cows and aardvarks, most tenrecs look like small hedgehogs or otters and can range in size from a tiny 4cm to a robust 39cm.

    5. Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko

Home to a whole raft of interesting and unusual reptiles, Madagascar s most devilish creation has to be the satanic leaf-tailed gecko. With red eyes, a tail shaped like a leaf and a head like Lucifer, it s no wonder locals are afraid of them.

Singles Holidays for over 50 s

The average age of guests on any of our solo holidays tends to be between 35 and 65, though we accept people from 25 onwards with no upper limit. Although we don t have trips that are singles holidays for over 50s exclusively, we believe that anybody looking for a trip that s perfect for their age will find one with us. Our groups are welcoming, friendly, and you ll always be able to find something to do, whether it s the organised activity or not.

Just because you re not with people of exactly the same age as you, it doesn t mean you won t be part of a group of like-minded individuals. By selecting one of our holidays and electing to travel on your own, you are already putting yourself in a group of people with a very definite shared interest, and that is the perfect way to form a new friendship. If you are worried that you won t enjoy the company, why not try out one of our single night trips? It s a great way for you to come along and mingle with a mix of people, as these trips are popular with first-timers and old-hands alike. You ll also have a delicious meal, a night in a lovely hotel and, if you feel like it, a dance!

Or you could try one of our European city breaks. These trips take place over a weekend so you get more of a taste of what Friendship Travel singles holidays are like, and can find out why we think travelling with a mixed age group is much more fun than singles holidays for over 50s or holidays for singles over 40. The feedback we get from all our guests tells us that, even if they were sceptical before hand, people find our mixed groups much more fun than they ve found age-specific holidays.

Of course, given that most of our guests are between 35 and 65 anyway, there will be plenty of other over 50s with you during a holiday with us, so you get the best of both worlds: there are plenty of people your age to spend the holiday with and you might even discover that some of the younger people are great company as well. We also find that more of our travellers are women than men, though we do aim to have a balance of sexes on each trip.

If the age of other travellers is of concern to you, then you can call our office for more details about the trip you re interested in. This will also give you the chance to talk to one of our representatives about the holiday itself and, because we make sure that somebody from the team has visited every destination, hotel and resort that we take you to, you can be guaranteed that you re speaking to an expert on the trip, who can give you clear, personal advice.

Should you want to talk to other travellers and find out for yourself how many people on your singles holidays are over 50, then simply head over to our forum and ask. You can also start talking to people heading on the holiday with you and get to know the people you ll be meeting on the trip. It s a great way to start bonding early, and you might even get a few useful tips or pieces of advice from the people there.

Finally, when deciding between singles holidays for over 50s or one of our mixed ranged packages, remember that on every trip your group will be accompanied by one of our friendship hosts, whose job it will be break the ice, keep you entertained and offer plenty of advice, which is another reason we think are holidays are great for everyone.

Line up with locals to savour a sweet scoop of Coppelia ice cream. This Cuban institution serves tried and true favourites like chocolate and vanilla as well as exotic favourites mango and coconut.

    2. Pastelitos

These small pastries can be either sweet or savoury depending on the filling. Cream cheese, guava and beef are the most popular fillings and make for a cheap, tasty meal on the run.

    3. Fritura de Maiz

These deep-fried cheese and cornmeal fritters are a popular street food snack in Cuba and a great choice for vegetarians looking for a meat-free option.

The tipple of choice in Cuba is rum. Savour some Havana Club Rum straight-up, have it mixed up in a minty Mojito or sip on a Cuba Libre.

Cuban coffee is of legendary quality, so be sure to get your caffeine-hit with a small yet rich cup of black gold.
