Interview with Guy Langford

​Where do you see the opportunities for growth in your sector?

US THL companies performed very well in 2014 and they are expecting continued robust growth in 2015. US visitor exports—the measure of money spent by international tourists—are expected to increase four percent to $200 billion in 2015, thanks to improvement in the global economic environment and increasing income levels in emerging markets.¹

THL companies based in the US will continue to seek out international growth opportunities, especially in the faster growing regions of Asia and Latin America. But for THL players, international expansion does not necessarily imply the kinds of “brick-and-mortar” organic capital investment that is common in other industries. Rather, THL players are increasingly using an “asset-light” strategy in which they expand their brand footprint globally without taking on huge capital investment and by exploring joint ventures with local partners. Hotel chains are using this approach in seeking entrée into newer markets through licensing agreements with local operators. Similarly, restaurants are using the asset-light franchise model that works so well for them domestically as they explore opportunities in foreign markets. At the same time, restaurants are collaborating with local companies in these foreign markets to assist with everything from site selection to designing menus and complying with local business standards.

Organic service expansion remains an important part of airline global growth strategy. Yet, airlines too employ an asset-light partnership approach in expanding service globally. Alliances such as OneWorld, for example, allow passengers on US airlines to book travel through the domestic carriers but fly on a foreign carrier. Such models let US carriers expand service into foreign markets without incurring the route expansion costs of actually servicing them.

Of particular note, US sports teams and leagues are finding fans internationally—boosted by technology drivers, mobile and social—leading to increasingly global brands. That trend will continue, especially in the brand-conscious leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA). Indeed, the success of the NFL games in London—now at three games per season—has prompted discussion to expand into other markets throughout the UK and Continental Europe.

Hospitality management bachelor’s programs require four years of study, although accelerated 2-year programs are available for students who have an associate degree. Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for lodging managers is predicted to increase by 8% during the 2014-2024 decade. Meeting, convention and event planners should expect faster-than-average employment growth of 10% during the same time period. In May of 2015, the BLS estimated the mean annual salary of event planners was $50,910. Lodging managers averaged $57,810.

Continuing Education

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management may pursue an advanced degree, such as a master’s degree in hospitality management or international hospitality management. Large hospitality chains often promote from within, so work experience can also assist in career advancement.

Voluntary professional certification is available through many organizations, including the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute. This organization has certification options in housekeeping, sales, food and beverage, human resources, front office, security, revenue management, and maintenance. A series of education and experience requirements must be met to earn a designation.

Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Hospitality Management can learn how to operate a hospitality-oriented business. Graduates may be qualified for entry-level management positions, and they can pursue voluntary certifications to enhance their job applications. They may also go on to enroll in hospitality management master’s programs.

Online hospitality management degrees

For those with wanderlust, a career in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry might seem like a perfect fit. Those looking to work in this field will have to contend with declining job opportunities in many travel-related occupations, as, in the wake of the recession, job growth for many positions is stagnant or declining. That doesn’t mean travel and tourism can’t be a good career path, but students should be smart about getting the hospitality degrees needed to position themselves for the best job opportunities. Getting the right education could be a strong first step.

Hospitality degrees and classes

While some travel jobs, such as being a lodging manager or travel agent, don’t require a degree, these are also the jobs with some of the least growth potential. So, rather than focus on careers requiring little education, those interested in the field may want look to the area of hospitality and management, where job opportunities are expected to be more positive. Hospitality degrees are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and there are also certificates available for those seeking a faster educational option. The following are some examples of hospitality degrees and certificates:

  • Certificate in hospitality management
  • Associate degree in hospitality, travel and tourism
  • Associate degree in hospitality management
  • Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management
  • Bachelor’s degree in hotel administration
  • Master’s degree in hospitality management

While a certificate or associate degree may be enough for some positions, those with a bachelor’s degree may have the greatest job opportunities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For example, meeting, convention and event planners are expected to see significant growth in the coming years, 33 percent from 2012-2022 according to BLS estimates, and individuals typically need a bachelor’s degree in hospitality or a related field to be eligible for these jobs.

Regardless of where students ultimately go to school or which degree they pursue, the core courses for degrees in hospitality management or hotel administration are likely to be similar. These classes might include:

  • Finance or managerial accounting
  • Human resource management
  • Hospitality facilities management
  • Food service theory and practice
  • Meeting and event planning

Online hospitality schools offer convenient options

Busy students may be relieved to learn they can study hospitality online. Degrees offered at online hospitality schools typically provide the same level of education provided by campus programs. The difference is the materials are delivered entirely online, and students can often review course materials and lectures at their convenience.

The quality of online education is continuing to improve in general, and some very prestigious hospitality programs are offered online. Of the top 20 U.S. schools ranked by the Journal of Hospitality Tourism Research, the following offer either certificates or full hospitality degrees online:

  • Michigan State University
  • University of Nevada-Las Vegas
  • Iowa State University
  • Purdue University
  • Northern Arizona University
  • Drexel University

While looking for programs, students may also want to consider online business degrees with an emphasis in tourism, travel or hospitality. These degrees may give graduates a broader base of skills that can be used both within and outside the hospitality industry. After graduation, students may go on to work in management, human resources or administration.

What to do after graduation

Once they have their degrees, individuals working in the hospitality industry may benefit from joining an organization dedicated to their specialty in the field, or from earning additional certifications or designations. Both may be ways to improve opportunities for career promotion. Professional organizations and associations are available for nearly all specialties within the industry. The following are examples of some of the choices that may be of interest:

These organizations provide members with a variety of resources to help them further their careers. In addition, some associations offer professional credentials to members who meet certain requirements. For example, the Professional Convention Management Association designates qualified members as Certified Meeting Professionals. Another organization, the American Hotel Lodging Educational Institute, offers certifications for everyone from front desk clerks to upper management.

Teaching, learning and assessment: You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and carry out independent learning. A central part of the course experience is the regular involvement with industry, through specific visits, guest speakers and events all of which provide valuable insights into practice, contemporary trends and thinking. Traditionally, postgraduate students have a business-related honours degree or equivalent and industry experience. We will consider recent graduates who can demonstrate additional capabilities. In addition we also welcome applications from graduates with an ordinary degree who can show a period of post-graduation work experience or from those with substantial industry experience and a commitment to CPD.

Accreditation of prior learning: You may be granted exemption from studying a module or modules up to a maximum of 60 credit points, provided you can demonstrate successful achievement of all the learning outcomes.

International: Where your honours degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to provide evidence of English language competence at no less than IELTS 6.5 with no individual component score less than 6.0.

You will also complete a 60 credit project (Business Impact and Practice) focused towards your specialism in partnership with an external organisation. This is your opportunity to discover, propose, plan, lead and deliver an externally driven project, whilst developing your skills of reflective practice and personal development planning.

    Online hospitality management degrees

    For those with wanderlust, a career in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry might seem like a perfect fit. Those looking to work in this field will have to contend with declining job opportunities in many travel-related occupations, as, in the wake of the recession, job growth for many positions is stagnant or declining. That doesn’t mean travel and tourism can’t be a good career path, but students should be smart about getting the hospitality degrees needed to position themselves for the best job opportunities. Getting the right education could be a strong first step.

    Hospitality degrees and classes

    While some travel jobs, such as being a lodging manager or travel agent, don’t require a degree, these are also the jobs with some of the least growth potential. So, rather than focus on careers requiring little education, those interested in the field may want look to the area of hospitality and management, where job opportunities are expected to be more positive. Hospitality degrees are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and there are also certificates available for those seeking a faster educational option. The following are some examples of hospitality degrees and certificates:

    • Certificate in hospitality management
    • Associate degree in hospitality, travel and tourism
    • Associate degree in hospitality management
    • Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management
    • Bachelor’s degree in hotel administration
    • Master’s degree in hospitality management

    While a certificate or associate degree may be enough for some positions, those with a bachelor’s degree may have the greatest job opportunities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For example, meeting, convention and event planners are expected to see significant growth in the coming years, 33 percent from 2012-2022 according to BLS estimates, and individuals typically need a bachelor’s degree in hospitality or a related field to be eligible for these jobs.

    Regardless of where students ultimately go to school or which degree they pursue, the core courses for degrees in hospitality management or hotel administration are likely to be similar. These classes might include:

    • Finance or managerial accounting
    • Human resource management
    • Hospitality facilities management
    • Food service theory and practice
    • Meeting and event planning

    Online hospitality schools offer convenient options

    Busy students may be relieved to learn they can study hospitality online. Degrees offered at online hospitality schools typically provide the same level of education provided by campus programs. The difference is the materials are delivered entirely online, and students can often review course materials and lectures at their convenience.

    The quality of online education is continuing to improve in general, and some very prestigious hospitality programs are offered online. Of the top 20 U.S. schools ranked by the Journal of Hospitality Tourism Research, the following offer either certificates or full hospitality degrees online:

    • Cornell University
    • Michigan State University
    • University of Nevada-Las Vegas
    • Iowa State University
    • Purdue University
    • Northern Arizona University
    • Drexel University

    While looking for programs, students may also want to consider online business degrees with an emphasis in tourism, travel or hospitality. These degrees may give graduates a broader base of skills that can be used both within and outside the hospitality industry. After graduation, students may go on to work in management, human resources or administration.

    What to do after graduation

    Once they have their degrees, individuals working in the hospitality industry may benefit from joining an organization dedicated to their specialty in the field, or from earning additional certifications or designations. Both may be ways to improve opportunities for career promotion. Professional organizations and associations are available for nearly all specialties within the industry. The following are examples of some of the choices that may be of interest:

    • American Society of Travel Agents
    • National Tour Association
    • Professional Convention Management Association
    • Society for Hospitality and Food Service Management

    These organizations provide members with a variety of resources to help them further their careers. In addition, some associations offer professional credentials to members who meet certain requirements. For example, the Professional Convention Management Association designates qualified members as Certified Meeting Professionals. Another organization, the American Hotel Lodging Educational Institute, offers certifications for everyone from front desk clerks to upper management.

    Of the more than 25 subsectors that make up the travel and tourism industry, three sectors – food services, air travel, and accommodations – account for more than 50 percent of total output.

     Accommodations: This subsector is the largest of the three and accounts for 19 percent of total travel industry output. Accommodations benefited from international overseas traveler growth of 7 percent in 2012.

    Food Services: This subsector is the second largest and accounts for more than 16 percent of travel and tourism-related output. The National Restaurant Association predicts 3.4 percent growth for the restaurant industry in 2015.

    Air Travel: This subsector accounts for nearly16 percent of travel industry output. Airlines continuously seek ways to increase revenue by offering access to new markets as they work to reduce costs and fuel consumption by grounding inefficient aircraft and scaling back unprofitable routes.

    Travel Promotion Act of 2009 (TPA):  This Act established the Corporation for Travel Promotion (CTP). a new public-private partnership in travel and tourism doing business as “Brand USA”. The alliance between the U.S. government and the U.S. travel and tourism industry enhances the distribution of information on U.S. entry policies and promotes leisure, business, and scholarly travel to and within the United States.  Currently, under the Travel Promotion Act, the CTP can access up to $100 million in federal matching funds to execute its mission based on a 1 to 1 ratio of public to private funds. The CTP is active in the top international travel markets for the United States.

Among the competitors in the industry are single sandwich shops, coffee shops and restaurants, coffeehouses, pizza and quick-service restaurant chains, and also high-end, luxury fine-dining restaurants, offering the customer a vast variety of choices. Estimations put the overall revenue from food and drink sales in the United States at more than 600 billion U.S. dollars. Major players in the industry include McDonald’s (limited-service segment) with more than 34 thousand restaurants worldwide, the coffeehouse chain Starbucks – with more than 19 thousand stores worldwide – and Domino’s Pizza in the pizza chain segment.

    ​Where do you see the opportunities for growth in your sector?

    US THL companies performed very well in 2014 and they are expecting continued robust growth in 2015. US visitor exports—the measure of money spent by international tourists—are expected to increase four percent to $200 billion in 2015, thanks to improvement in the global economic environment and increasing income levels in emerging markets.¹

    THL companies based in the US will continue to seek out international growth opportunities, especially in the faster growing regions of Asia and Latin America. But for THL players, international expansion does not necessarily imply the kinds of “brick-and-mortar” organic capital investment that is common in other industries. Rather, THL players are increasingly using an “asset-light” strategy in which they expand their brand footprint globally without taking on huge capital investment and by exploring joint ventures with local partners. Hotel chains are using this approach in seeking entrée into newer markets through licensing agreements with local operators. Similarly, restaurants are using the asset-light franchise model that works so well for them domestically as they explore opportunities in foreign markets. At the same time, restaurants are collaborating with local companies in these foreign markets to assist with everything from site selection to designing menus and complying with local business standards.

    Organic service expansion remains an important part of airline global growth strategy. Yet, airlines too employ an asset-light partnership approach in expanding service globally. Alliances such as OneWorld, for example, allow passengers on US airlines to book travel through the domestic carriers but fly on a foreign carrier. Such models let US carriers expand service into foreign markets without incurring the route expansion costs of actually servicing them.

    Of particular note, US sports teams and leagues are finding fans internationally—boosted by technology drivers, mobile and social—leading to increasingly global brands. That trend will continue, especially in the brand-conscious leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA). Indeed, the success of the NFL games in London—now at three games per season—has prompted discussion to expand into other markets throughout the UK and Continental Europe.
